Hobie 16s are absolutely amazing! There isn’t one water sport I haven’t been involved in & in the Extreme sense of the word. Commonly Jumping 20 plus feet on Wind Surfing boards not to mention Kite boards. After doing any water sport you can think of since 1973, the Hobie 16 is an absolute stand out in my mind. After owning 4 H-16’s & 1 H-18 & racing H-20’s (Miracle 20’s) not to mention large mono hulls I believe the H-16 is the stand out overall. No dagger boards to deal with when sailing in & out of the impact zone on the Texas coast. The H16 can feel loose on the water whether on the Lake or catching & surfing waves on the coast. I realize a lot of the population is on the instant gratification kick & don’t want to invest the time to rig the Hobie & get proficient in Sailing skills & prefer to squeeze a throttle on a Seadoo & go fast but after doing Hobie 16’s for over 30 yrs, the Hobie can be insane in extreme conditions or extremely relaxing taking family & kids for rides or even using it as a beach taxi to go up & down the beach to your favorite places. If you can’t swing a new one, buy a used one but take someone with you that knows them inside out to find a good one. I’m from Ft Worth Tx & know no one at this company or site. (Just a FYI). Small Boat Spotlight : The Everlasting Hobie 16

When you stop and think about what types of boats are most responsible for luring people into the wonderful world of sailing the Hobie 16 has got to be in the top three on the list. For children of the 1970s and 80s this sexy little catamaran seemed to be sitting on a trailer in every other backyard.

What most simply call the Hobie 16 is an iconic sailboat that is considered by many to be the most popular catamaran in the world. In the beginning, the H16 was marketed as more than some ordinary sailboat that could be easily trailered, rigged and beached. Instead Hobie Alter put forth the idea that to sail this boat was to be part of a lifestyle – the “ Hobie way of life .” Instead of making the pitch that it was a fast fun little boat that could make your summer a little brighter, Alter suggested that sailing a Hobiecat was a reflection of an energized youth with a dash of good-natured rebellion.

There have been over 135,000 of these boats produced since 1969 and they are the second largest boat fleet in existence. The H16 is simple to rig (especially on a beach) and pretty easy to sail, although capsizing is par for the course and regarded by some as fun. Once launched, the full batten main and relatively lightweight construction (320 pounds) makes the boat quite fast and responsive. The Hobie folks state the max speed is nearly 24-knots and there are plenty of Hobie sailors who will agree and verify. At speeds like that you can bet whoever is sailing the boat will be utilizing another element Hobie sailors love – the dual trapeze setup they are equipped with. In 10-15 knots of breeze, skipper and crew can hike their entire bodies out on the wires simultaneously, suspended above the water and as the hull begins to rise, life becomes very sweet. Any beach cat sailor will tell you that sailing along at 15-knots, hiked out and flying a hull is one of the most blissful feelings known to man.

The other very positive aspect of the Hobie 16 is the cost of entry. It remains one of the more inexpensive roads into the world of sailing. A 2017 Hobie 16 is just over $11,000 and that’s ready to sail. Lots of sailboats have a base price and then silly little extras like… sails!! And if the used market is explored, a ready to sail H16 can be picked up for under $1,000, which is pretty incredible.

And lastly, Hobie 16s are also versatile. They’re small enough to throw in the backyard next to the garage without causing marital dismay but once rigged and ready, they’re hearty enough to do some serious coastal sailing. While many Hobie sailors head out for a few hours for some low-key albeit amped up daysailing, others like to actually get in the surf, hit the adrenaline button and use the boat as a surfboard.

It’s a design that has definitely stood the test of time (for good reason) and one that is positive for the sport. The cost to fun ratio is right where we like to see it, so if you don’t have a boat and don’t want to spend a fortune – grab a Hobie 16 and getcha sail on!

The New Befoil 16 Sport Catamaran Finally Unveiled

Do you remember the Voilavion ? Befoil 16 came from this R & D project, imagined by Benjamin Magnard, aiming to create a hydrofoil boat equipped with a tilting mast, which flew from its first sea trials.

Specifications were drawn up in collaboration with VPLP, a naval architecture firm whose reputation is well established, to create a hydrofoil catamaran that is easy to use and accessible to all: the Befoil 16. It is a 16-foot hydrofoil catamaran designed for lovers of new sensations and sailing schools, which is easy to handle, and which, thanks to its large surface area and stability, allows safe navigation over water.

The new Befoil 16 Sport

Made in Europe and assembled on the premises in Lorient, the Befoil 16 Sport is a high-quality construction thanks to the infusion manufacturing process.

This sportier version was launched at the end of 2020. The 16 Sport is lighter, stiffer and more canvasy, for performance on the water. Intended for private individuals and sailing schools, this hydrofoil catamaran adapts to all sailing programmes, to learn how to fly on the water easily and to fill up with sensations.

With its self-regulating T-foils and its 2 load-bearing rudders and glass/epoxy hulls, the Befoil 16 Sport is the latest addition to the Befoil series. In trapeze sport mode, or in comfort mode with theoptional ladders, the 16 Sport provides a great feeling of speed. The boat takes off from 8 knots and can reach up to 20 knots.

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
• LOA: Length overall in feet
• Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

Deux après la mort de Mahsa Amini Le président iranien promet d’empêcher la police des mœurs de « déranger » les femmes

(Téhéran) Le président iranien Massoud Pezeshkian a promis lundi d’œuvrer afin que la police des mœurs ne « dérange » pas les femmes ne portant pas le voile obligatoire en public, dans des déclarations à l’occasion du deuxième anniversaire de la mort en détention de Mahsa Amini.

« La police des mœurs n’est pas censée affronter [les femmes], je veillerai à ce qu’elle ne [les] dérange pas », a déclaré à Téhéran le président réformiste lors de sa première conférence de presse depuis son élection en juillet.

M. Pezeshkian a tenu ces propos deux ans après la mort, le 16 septembre 2022, de Mahsa Amini, une jeune Kurde iranienne de 22 ans arrêtée par la police des mœurs pour non-respect du code vestimentaire strict imposé aux femmes en Iran.

« Même le Procureur général avait déclaré qu’ils n’avaient pas le droit d’affronter » les femmes, a ajouté le président.

Lors de sa campagne électorale, M. Pezeshkian avait promis de retirer des rues la police des mœurs, chargée de surveiller le port du voile obligatoire pour les femmes.

La mort de Mahsa Amini a déclenché un vaste mouvement de contestation en Iran qui a fait plusieurs centaines de morts et provoqué l’arrestation de milliers de personnes. Les autorités ont décrit les manifestations comme des « émeutes » orchestrées par les pays occidentaux.

M. Pezeshkian, alors député au Parlement iranien, avait vivement critiqué en septembre 2022 la police pour la mort en détention de Mahsa Amini.

Relations avec l’Occident

Lundi, le président iranien a également déclaré que son gouvernement s’efforçait d’alléger les restrictions draconiennes imposées sur l’internet, notamment sur les réseaux sociaux.

Depuis les manifestations de 2022, l’Iran a bloqué Instagram et WhatsApp, les applications les plus utilisées depuis le blocage des plateformes YouTube, Facebook, Telegram, Twitter et TikTok ces dernières années.

M. Pezeshkian a par ailleurs évoqué les relations avec les États-Unis, ainsi que la coopération militaire de la République islamique avec la Russie, son alliée.  

« Nous ne nous battons pas avec l’Amérique si elle respecte nos droits, nous ne nous battons avec personne ; nous voulons progresser en toute sécurité », a-t-il déclaré.

« Nous ne recherchons pas d’armes nucléaires, nous avons respecté le cadre de l’accord » conclu en 2015 entre l’Iran et les puissances mondiales pour encadrer le programme nucléaire du pays, a-t-il ajouté.

« Nous cherchons toujours à maintenir ce cadre », a assuré M. Pezeshkian, précisant que les Américains avaient rompu l’accord, les « forçant » ainsi à prendre de mesures en représailles.

Depuis le départ fracassant des Américains de cet accord, décidé par l’ancien président républicain Donald Trump en 2018, la République islamique s’est affranchie progressivement de ses engagements.

Le président a également critiqué les Occidentaux pour avoir annoncé récemment de nouvelles sanctions contre l’Iran, accusant Téhéran d’avoir livré des missiles balistiques à la Russie pour frapper l’Ukraine.

« Désarmer Israël »

« Il est possible que l’Iran et la Russie aient coopéré militairement dans le passé, car il n’y avait pas d’interdiction à l’époque », a-t-il défendu, disant trouver injuste le « boycott » occidental.

L’Iran avait rejeté les accusations et menacé de prendre des « mesures » en réponse aux sanctions. Les représentants diplomatiques britannique, néerlandais, français et allemand avaient d’ailleurs été convoqués.

M. Pezeshkian a aussi insisté sur le droit du pays à maintenir son programme de missiles pour dissuader Israël, son ennemi juré engagé dans une guerre dans la bande de Gaza contre le mouvement islamiste palestinien Hamas, que Téhéran soutient.

« Ils [les Occidentaux] veulent que nous n’ayons pas de missiles, c’est bien, mais il faut d’abord désarmer Israël », a-t-il dit. Sinon, « ils [les Israéliens] peuvent larguer des bombes sur nous quand ils le veulent, comme à Gaza ».

Le président Pezeshkian a également nié des accusations selon lesquelles l’Iran aurait envoyé au Yémen le missile hypersonique que les rebelles houthis, alliés de Téhéran, ont tiré en direction d’Israël dimanche.

« Nous n’avons pas en Iran le type de missile hypersonique tiré par les houthis », a-t-il déclaré.

Plus tôt, le ministre iranien des Affaires étrangères, Abbas Araghchi, avait nié tout transfert d’armes vers le Yémen.

« L’accusation d’envoi d’armes au Yémen est une insulte à la nation yéménite, car le Yémen dispose des technologies nécessaires et est capable de renforcer son arsenal de manière indépendante », a déclaré le ministre, cité lundi par l’agence Tasnim.

La Nobel de la paix Narges Mohammadi appelle à « sortir du silence »

La prix Nobel de la paix iranienne emprisonnée Narges Mohammadi a appelé lundi la communauté internationale à « sortir du silence et de l’inaction » face à l’oppression des femmes en Iran, deux ans exactement après le déclenchement du mouvement « Femme Vie Liberté ».

« J’appelle les institutions internationales et les peuples à agir. J’exhorte les Nations unies à sortir de leur silence et de leur inaction face à l’oppression dévastatrice et la discrimination perpétrées par les gouvernements théocratiques et autoritaires contre les femmes, en criminalisant l’apartheid de genre », a déclaré M me  Mohammadi dans ce message relayé par ses proches sur les réseaux sociaux.

Il y a deux ans, le 16 septembre 2022, la mort de Mahsa Amini, une jeune Kurde iranienne arrêtée par la police des mœurs iranienne pour non-respect du strict code vestimentaire islamique, a déclenché en Iran une révolte populaire inédite, brutalement réprimée par le pouvoir.

« En ce deuxième anniversaire de Femme Vie Liberté, nous réaffirmons notre engagement à réaliser la démocratie, la liberté, l’égalité, et à vaincre le despotisme théocratique », ajoute M me  Mohammadi, qui dimanche avait annoncé la grève de la faim de 34 prisonnières politiques afin de « commémorer » la contestation depuis deux ans et le « meurtre » de Mahsa Amini.

D’après la Fondation Narges, interrogée par l’AFP, cette grève, « symbolique » et à laquelle la Nobel de la paix participait, devait durer « 24 heures ».  

La militante de 52 ans a reçu cette distinction en 2023, notamment pour son combat contre la peine de mort. Elle est emprisonnée à Téhéran depuis novembre 2021 et a passé une large part de la dernière décennie en prison.
