Helly Hansen Ahiga V4 HP Sneakers: Look and feel

We got off to a very good start, these sneakers and me. The minute I unboxed them and put them on my trotters, sans socks, they had the comfort levels of a favourite slipper.

They’re so lightweight you barely realise you have them on, but there’s a good level of cushioning and protection in the midsole, so while walking around on sand, rocks or gear-strewn decks, there’s no need to fret about what you might step on.

I also love the look of these shoes, which despite their high level of practicality, manage to be pretty much smart casual. They look just at home on your feet in a beach bar as they hanging over the side of a yacht or stood atop a stand-up paddle board .

Helly Hansen Ahiga V4 HP Sneakers: Design and materials

Keeping the weight low and the feel light and breezy has clearly been a priority for Helly’s designers when they brain-stormed the Ahiga V4 HP Sneakers, which are designed for men and women. The mesh upper is not just featherlight, it also allows your feet to breath very easily. Plus, after a drenching, the shoes drain very quickly and dry rapidly.

The Ahiga V4 HP Sneakers are made to be worn without socks (there’s not much point in having a quick-draining-and-drying shoe if you’re wearing soggy socks underneath them), and they are very comfortable next to the skin.

After multiple wears and many hours on and off-shore in these shoes, I have not experienced any rubbing whatsoever (although I always make sure I rinse them with fresh water after immersion in the sea).

An antimicrobial treatment helps prevent the build up of bad smells. Even eight months in, this is still working, but again, it’s important to regularly rinse these shoes and to let them fully dry before storing them.

Entirely PVC free, the Ahiga V4 HP Sneakers are made with a significant amount of recycled material.

The EVA midsole provides cushioning, protection and support to the underside of your foot in all the places where you really need it, and the rubber outsoles are nice and grippy on all sorts of surfaces. The lace eyelets extend right to the top of the tongue, which helps you get an excellent tight grip – you would need to go to some lengths to loose these overboard.

My maiden voyage in the Helly Hansen Ahiga V4 HP sneakers was aboard a Figaro Bénéteau 3 racing yacht with professional sailor Joan Mulloy , amid an early winter storm somewhere on sea-seam between the Bristol Chanel and the Celtic Sea.

The weather was wild, the waves were mountainous and the deck was underwater half of the time, but not once did I worry about my footing in these shoes, as I moved around following Joan’s instructions.

Even when I had to leap over the waves between the yacht and the RIB that took us in and out of Swansea Harbour, I felt secure in the grip supplied by the sole of the Ahiga V4 HP sneakers.

The experience, which took place in the icy embrace of a foul-tempered and chilly late November day, did highlight the fact that the thermal protection offered by these shoes is minimal, and I would recommend wearing waterproof socks with them in cold weather and winter conditions.

Since that wild water baptism, I have worn the Ahiga V4 HP sneakers during umpteen boating trips, gig-rowing, kayaking and SUPing escapades – albeit mostly in much warmer conditions – and have found their performance levels excellent. They’re also perfectly at home while strolling along beaches, cliffs, coastal paths and trails.

They wouldn’t be my first choice of shoes to wear in mid-winter, but that aside I think Helly Hansen’s claims that the stylish Ahiga V4 HP sneakers are high-functioning and versatile aqua-trainers are more than justified. They're comfortable, classy and functional in equal measure, and the price tag is pretty reasonable.

Yet it shares ergonomics and features with the brand’s top specification Ægir collection that sells for two or three times the price. The high fleece lined collar includes an effective storm flap with fleece fabric under the chin that maximises comfort and minimises chafe. There’s also a two-way main zip, with Velcro fastened storm flap, plus plenty of reinforcement in high wear areas around the elbows and lower back. Despite the obvious bulk of the Helly Hansen Skagen Offshore Jacket, articulated arms and shoulders facilitate ease of movement. The high visibility hood proved effective and for night sailing there are six strips of retro-reflective tape. This is a feature that’s all too often lacking in other kit that’s described as being suitable for offshore use. In addition to two useful cargo pockets, there are chest level hand-warmer pockets with fleece linings, while double cuffs help ensure sleeves stay dry. Detailing includes a big and obvious hanging loop. This may sound like a small point, but can make a big difference when coming off watch in the early hours of the morning on a boat that’s bouncing around in a big sea. On a late autumn day in the English Channel, with gusts the wrong side of 30 knots, this jacket was very cosy to wear. And the extent to which it eliminates wind chill is impressive at the price. The fabrics average around 50 per cent recycled content, including some from marine rubbish such as discarded commercial fishing gear that would otherwise litter the oceans. Another important factor is the durable waterproof coating that’s made without the use of Perfluorocarbons (PFCs). These have long been used to waterproof fabrics but environmental and health concerns mean manufacturers are developing other solutions. Under the warm gaze of a golden cross-legged Buddha, eight monks in crimson robes sat at a low table in the centre of the room, ethereal chants bursting from their throats. A bell tinkled. During the final prayer, the congregation, squeezed together on benches close to the monks, picked up parcels of food and waved them in front of themselves in clockwise circles. The bell tinkled one last time.    And with that, the hundred Russians put on their hats and coats and came outside to where six marshrutka buses were waiting. The driver took their 20 rubles (approx. $0.30) before taking them down the hill to Soviet Square. So begins a Sunday evening in Ulan-Ude, in Eastern Siberia’s Buddhist republic of Buryatia.  Preserving Buddhist heritage  Datsan Rinpoche Bagsha. A country of rolling hills between the southern shores of Lake Baikal and Russia’s frontier with Mongolia, Buryatia spans a territory as big as Germany, but fewer than a million people live here. Half of them reside in Ulan-Ude, the Trans-Siberian stopover and capital of the Buryat people. Buryats are of Mongolian stock, nomadic herders with a language and culture close to their cousins across the border. For centuries, Mongol khans governed the lands around Baikal; but living inside Moscow’s orbit for generations - first in the Buryat-Mongolian Autonomous Soviet Republic, then as Russian citizens - has changed the Buryats’ identity. As the first buses leave, some people stay behind for the monks to bless their food. Others stay to offer more prayers – first standing facing the Buddha with palms touching above their heads, then prostrate on their stomachs on the carpet.   Ethnographic Museum of the peoples living behind Baikal. Outside in the temple’s grounds, the view over the Transbaikal region from the summit is breathtaking. A mountain wind rips through a row of brightly-coloured prayer flags. Cast-iron prayer wheels rasp against fingers in the Siberian cold, while boards display Buddhist mantras in Russian, encouraging patience and hard work. A separate building houses the temple’s museum: its walls are covered with photographs from the Dalai Lama’s visit to Buryatia in 1991.  Russian and Soviet vibes Down the hill in Ulan-Ude, it’s easier to feel that you are in Russia. The voice of the tannoy ushering people into the chaotic Galaxy mall on Baltakhinova Street is the same man I had heard outside a mall in Arkhangelsk the week before. Kuybysheva Street is a collection of old wooden Siberian cottages, most repainted colourfully in bold blues and greens, and with white window-frames. They survive from the time of the Tsars, when Ulan-Ude - back then a little settlement called Verkhneudinsk - was a Russian trading post on the way to China. On Soviet Square, in the middle of the city, is the landmark that gives Ulan-Ude its quaint claim to fame: the world’s largest sculpture of Lenin’s head, which serves as Buryatia’s calling card on the Trans-Siberian Railway. The head, eight meters tall, is known outside of Russia, too: the then supreme leader of North Korea Kim Jong-il (himself a man of Eastern Siberia; he was born outside Khabarovsk) traveled here shortly before he died in 2011, especially to pay his respects to Lenin.  But Ilyich (that’s Lenin’s patronymic) wasn’t always so popular. The story goes that the sculpture was commissioned in 1971 to mark the centenary of Lenin’s birth and shipped to Canada, where a delegation from the Soviet Union was taking part in an exhibition. When the 42-ton Lenin returned home, Ulan-Ude was the only town in the USSR that Moscow could persuade to take him.   Blending cultures If the air inside the Rinpoche Bagsha temple crackles with prayer, then during a service at Odigitrievsky cathedral, the sound waves soothe you. Each deep ululation of the priest, followed by a chorus of high mesmeric song from the congregation, makes your heart slow down until you are frozen to the spot. The cathedral was built in the 18th century with money donated by Cossack merchants. It stands where the two rivers that run through Ulan-Ude, the Uda and the Selenge, almost meet. During the Soviet era, Odigitrievsky cathedral was converted into an anti-religious museum, but now services have resumed here twice a day.  In other parts of Ulan-Ude, Buryatia’s cultures blend together. At Cafe Kheseg on Kommunisticheskaya Street, Buryat families eat brunches of boovo (small, hard doughnuts served in a puddle of condensed milk) and blinchiki (small pancakes), as Russian and Mongolian ballads alternate on the stereo. Souvenir stores sell Mongolian handcrafts beside packs of Sagan Dalya, a potent medicinal Siberian tea. A statue on Lenina Street depicts two fish with their tails entwined to form a circle. This is an auspicious symbol in Buddhism, representing freedom and happiness, and here they are the shape of two Russian omul salmon, native to Lake Baikal. Half an hour’s drive north of Ulan-Ude, in the district of Verkhnyaya Berezovka, is the Ethnographic Museum of the Peoples of Baikal - a portion of the wilderness punctuated with model villages. Each village is dedicated to the culture of one of the tribes, who populate the vast Baikal Region - Buryats, Evenks, Soyots, Cossacks and Old Believers. To get to the villages, you have to walk through a wildlife sanctuary, where a Siberian tiger, a pack of wolves, wild red foxes and Bactrian camels roam around in large pens.  On a bitterly cold night, with a six-hour flight back to Moscow before dawn, I walk back towards Rinpoche Bagsha. I have to end my trip with one last look at a Soviet-era slogan on top of a housing block. Arshan - The Start of Sayan Mountains Transport to Arshan and Back Accommodation in Arshan A very good alternative to a homestay is a tent camp on Kynryga river, in a 15 minutes walk from the bus station. The camp is located in a very nice and quiet place just next to the river and can really make you feel the nature of the area. One very nice thing about this camp is that there’s a daily meditation and hatha yoga practices for those, who’re interested (for free). You can either come there with your own tent and pay 90 R ($4) a day for a place, or rent a tent, a mat, and a sleeping bag for 190 R ($6) all together. You can also pay 55 R ($2) and be fed twice a day with a nice vegetarian meal cooked from the local stuff.     What to Do in Arshan The best activity you can find in Arshan is to walk around t he hills (it is a start of Sayan range mountains). There's a river Kynryga, which goes far in teh mountains, you can walk along this river, and that's what most of the people do. There are a few waterfalls along the way, and most people stop at the first waterfall and swim there, but if you walk about 20 minutes more you'll get to the place (along the river), where there are hardly any people. There are a few spots to camp also. It gets dark around 7 in the evening, so it's better to come back before that time. Sayan mountains are great for hiking, horseriding, or rafting . There are no travel agencies directly in Arshan, but in the yoga camp we talked of above, they propose some trips like that. However, when we were there, everything was booked and the nearest trip was going to be in a week. Usually, it costs about $30-$50 a day per person. If you want to make sure you'll be able to try some of these activities, we recommend you to book them beforehand with the tour operators presented on our site in Baikal / Activities section. They have really good inexpensive offers, or otherwise, you can book a 10-day rafting trip. Some Practical Information: The shops are located on the main square, next to the bus stop. There are all kinds of products available, ice-creams, smoked fish, and beers in open-air cafes. There are also two cantines that serve very cheap food, but it's not of a good quality. It's better to eat in the yoga camp, where they can feed you with vegeterian (and non-vegeterian stuff) for $2 only. In the mornings, from 10 to 2, there's a market, where the local people sell veggies, milk, cottage cheese. There's a post office, that's located on the main square, it's open: 9.00-17.00, closed 13.00-14.00, days off: sat and sun.
