The Jetten Beach 45 was the talk of the town at the Cannes show, but does that fast-displacement hull live up to its bold claims?

The annual Cannes boat show is always awash with new model launches so it takes something special to cause a stir among its well-heeled visitors. However, last September, the normally conservative Dutch boatbuilder Jetten was the talk of the town.

Berthed at the end of a pontoon in full view of all its glamorous neighbours was a craft unlike anything showgoers had seen before. With its razor-sharp lines, dramatic axe bow and hunkered-down profile, it had an aura about it which belied its modest proportions.

Not since the original Audi TT can I remember something that looked as taut and fresh as the new Jetten Beach 45 . Every line, curve and join seems to slot into place to create a single cohesive shape that looks right from every angle.

And yet the striking styling isn’t even the most interesting aspect of the new Beach 45 – that honour belongs to its unusual aluminium hull, whose fast-displacement form allows it to cut through the water at well over 20 knots without climbing on to the plane.

That’s like a horse winning the Grand National without breaking into a gallop or jumping over the fences. The logic is simple; why bother with all that expended energy jumping over fences (or waves) when you can simply glide through them instead?

Yt’s a compelling argument that Jetten says allows its new boat to cruise at speed in comfort through seas that would have a planing boat trying to smash itself to pieces. Nor is this a case of all talk and no trousers – the Jetten’s category A RCD rating is normally reserved for oceangoing trawlers not stylish Mediterranean cruisers.

That brings us to another of the Beach 45’s strange dichotomies; this is a boat designed in Holland to tackle the worst the North Sea can throw at it, yet its target market is the beach-going crowd of the Med, as its name so blatantly alludes to. Confused? We were, so we asked for a sea trial to find out what this intriguing craft is all about.

Jetten Beach 45

Die holländische Werft Jetten Shipyard läutet im Genre der Verdränger eine neue Ära ein – jene der gemütlichen und doch flotten Art der Fortbewegung

Im Yachtbau spielt es derzeit Revolution. Andersartigkeit sowie optische oder faktische Überlegenheit verschaffen einer Marke Vorteile am Markt, deshalb suchen Werften, Konstrukteure und Designer auf allen Ebenen fieberhaft nach Innovationen. Das belebt die Branche und führt im Idealfall zu nachhaltigen Verbesserungen; man könnte das auch Fortschritt nennen.

Ein gutes Beispiel dafür ist die Jetten Beach 45, die erste Yacht einer neuen, künftig fünf Modelle zwischen 45 und 85 Fuß umfassenden Palette der holländischen Werft. Ambitioniertes Ziel dieser Linie: Anmutung, Haptik und Komfort sollen dem Niveau einer Superyacht entsprechen.

Schneller Verdränger

Motoryachten lassen sich üblicherweise in drei Kategorien einteilen: Verdränger, Halbgleiter und Gleiter. Die Jetten Beach 45 passt in keine – obwohl sie vom Konzept her ein Verdränger wäre. Verantwortlich dafür ist der Holländer Piet van Ossanen. In seinem Konstruktionsbüro werden Rümpfe für Superyachten, Frachtschiffe, Schlepper und Freizeitschifffahrt entwickelt. Eine Kernkompetenz der Firma sind hydrodynamische Analysen, die mithilfe eines speziellen Computerprogramms namens Computional Fluid Dynamics durchgeführt werden. Dieses Programm simuliert aufwändige Schlepptankversuche, die den Konstrukteuren umfangreiches Datenmaterial liefern und letztendlich die Entwicklung der sogenannten Fast-Displacement-Rümpfe ermöglichten, Verdränger, die mehr als doppelt so schnell fahren, wie es ihre Rumpfgeschwindigkeit erlaubt. Im Fall der Jetten Beach 45 liegt die Höchstgeschwindigkeit bei 22 Knoten; eine vergleichbare herkömmliche Yacht würde rund neun Knoten erzielen. Außerdem konnte der Spritverbrauch um 20 Prozent gesenkt werden.

Die Jetten Beach 45 kann darüberhinaus mit weiteren Besonderheiten aufwarten: Der über einem Stahlgerüst gebaute Alu-Rumpf ist im Vorschiffsbereich als schmaler U-Spant mit senkrechtem Steven im Stil einer Segelyacht ausgeführt und mutiert nach achtern hin rasch zu einem breiten, flachen U-Spant. Die daraus resultierende Formstabilität bildet eine Säule des Fahrkomforts, der zusätzliche Alu-Kiel eine zweite. Dieser ist im vorderen Bereich mit einem Kollisionsschutz versehen. Für Solidität sorgt ein Stringer-Spantengerüst aus Aluminium, die Außenhaut besteht im Unter- und Oberwasserbereich aus sechs beziehungsweise vier Millimeter starken Alu-Platten.

Im Gegensatz zum traditionellen Yachtbau, wo Fahrleistung zum Großteil über Gewichtsersparnis erreicht wird, muss ein Fast-Displacement-Rumpf schwer sein. Das hohe Eigengewicht hat nämlich einen maßgeblichen Anteil an der Laufruhe. Zwar gibt es Grenzen, die nicht überschritten werden sollten, theoretisch könnte man die Jetten Beach 45 aber auch in Stahl bauen.

Das Deck wird ebenfalls über einem Stahlbett gefertigt, damit es sich nicht verzieht. Nach der sogenannten „Hochzeit“, der Verbindung mit dem Rumpf, erfolgt der Prozess des Deoxydierens, bei dem das Schiff innerhalb von sechs Stunden mit Primer und Zweikomponentenlack gestrichen wird. Danach wird der Rumpf mit geschlossenzelligem Schaum komplett isoliert. Der Einbau der Technik erfolgt nach einem genauen Muster: an Backbord alles, was mit Wasser zu tun hat, an Steuerbord die Elektrik. Sämtliche Tanks sind mit internen Schwappschotten ausgestattet.

Wie es gefällt

Optisch hat die Jetten Beach 45 keine Ähnlichkeit mit einem traditionellen Verdränger. Cor D. Rover, ein auf die Konzeption großer Motoryachten spezialisiertes holländisches Designstudio, zeichnete eine Megayacht im Kleinformat, mit typisch steilem Bugsteven, tief nach unten gezogener Bugsektion sowie einem stromlinienförmigen Dach über der Kajüte, das zwecks Beschattung im Inneren über die Kajütfenster und achtern über die halbe Plicht gezogen wurde.

The motor yachts from Jetten Yachting consist of solid steel craft measuring between 8 and 14 metres. The motor yachts have an identical silhouette, with the high bow being one of the noticeable features. A typical feature of the motor yachts is the fishtail rudder which means the turning circle is very small, making the vessels extremely manoeuvrable and easy to steer.

The boat has an open cockpit seen from the stern, where there is also a door and two staircases to the side decks. This means easy boarding and disembarkation when moored. The cockpit is fully protected by the cabriolet hood around it, increasing the living space considerably. The folding doors give the boat a feeling of space, as does the stylish interior with its authentic carpentry. A unique feature of the vessels is that you can largely determine the layout and design of the boat yourself. This is unusual for this class of boat. You can therefore rest assured that you get the boat that perfectly suits your needs.

The use of solid woodwork enriches the motor yacht's image. The traditional interior is handmade by carpenters and the finishing is of a very high standard.
