I remembered fitting an Oceanair Skyshade to my last boat, it worked perfectly. So when I decided that the tatty curtain over my aft cabin deck hatch needed somthing better, I bought one again. What an improvement!

SKYSHADE Cabinshades are provided as standard with face mount fixings. Top mount options are available, please call us if you require a top mounted blind.

A 3-layer blind fabric combines 0% light transmission and 80% heat reflection in a waterproof, UV resistant, low maintenance blind fabric.

Oceanair SKYSHADE Cabinshade Measuring Guide

You will need a tape measure.

Measure both the width and height of the aperture and any trim. The width of the blind fabric (X) is defined as the width of the aperture plus 15mm (5/8"). The height of the blind fabric (Y) is defined as the height of the aperture and any trim plus 50mm (2"). Ideally the blind will be positioned so that, when stowed, the pull-down bar and mini grip will be clear of the hatch or portlight and any trim (C).
Ensure that you have sufficient space around the aperture to accommodate the overall size of the Cabinshade both vertically and horizontally (A/B). This area is to be free from obstructions and away from any heat sources.
Match the blind fabric X and Y measurements with the list of available sizes below. Always choose a larger size if unsure.
Note the Cabinshade has a trim clearance of 15mm (5/8") (D). The product can, however, be mounted onto raised blocks to increase clearance.
Ensure that the thickness of the boat structure at the proposed mounting position is deep enough to prevent the fixing screws from breaking through (E).

Anyone got any recent experience about the cost (I am sitting down). Id like to update the window treatment in Seralia as the curtains are original and the tracks are very stiff. I think Venetian blinds would work and make the boat feel more modern. Obviously Oceanair are the leaders in this field but getting pricing out of them is nigh on impossible. They want to do a design consultant visit etc etc which is a) impractical in spain and b) sounds like those awful office furniture people who employ design reps to give you the hard sell. Also the window recesses are basically square so not a hard job to measure. I fancy the leather ones, or at least the fake leather ones. Anyone else care to name alternative suppliers while we are at it?

I am in the process of fitting Oceanair venetians into our boat to replace some Roman or Austrian or something blinds so as to give the master a bit of a modern uplift. fitted one in the bathroom at the weekend and still got 2 more to do in the bedroom. The one I've fitted looks ace and has transformed the room I had no problem at all getting the blinds sorted, speak to Chris in sales at IMP (International Marine Products) in Royston, Herts, will put their number up when I find it. For me it was a very easy process, Chris quoted me on my measurements once we had discussed which side for the controls, slat width, finish etc. etc. but he also kindly went on board to measure for himself just to make sure we had it all correct. I'm sure you'll get a decent response from him. Tell him you got the recommendation from Andy on Hollywood in Lymington. Andy

I haven't had a good experience with oceanair venetian blinds - they don't seem materially different from domestic blinds and go rusty/corrode. They are also a pig to clean. I'd go with roman blinds or curtains.

Jez I'm about to change the blinds in all our bathrooms/showers. Princess used Oceanair which are (as said above) made from a material that eventually rusts. Ask Estelle when you see her. I was going to see if I could find something made from plastic. I'm sure that any replacements will be cheaper than Oceanair. IMO it is like those Cantolupi lights that they say can be used outside (radar arch in our case) - complete rubbish and cost mega bucks. Cheaper ones are often more appropriate. There is always an altefnative if you look around.

The princess thing of putting Venetian blinds inside shower cubicles ( for many years and on many models) is a bit daft to begin with Hurricane. Cleaning nightmare- how do you get shampoo blobs off the slats?Fortunately David King is unique on this piece of design individualism!

As I understand it Oceanair are a tad pricey. Our boat has 'ordinary' venetian blinds fitted by NYA when they spruced it up as a stock boat. They look the business and were, I suspect, a lot less gold than Oceanair.

A friend has recently been quoted just under 2k for 5 blinds, from my experience Oceanair were unreliable, I have had a lot of blinds from Mark at Breeze Blinds in Chichester who is much more sensible on price and delivery time.

Interesting, and a shame, if Oceanair are proven to corrode. I went with them through their implied quality and on board credentials. The factory fit ones in our previous had fared ok without failing at all, bar one guide cord so I was comfortable getting them for this boat. But as there is a question mark I'll look after them as best as we can. Price wise.. well I was very surprised but they came in slightly cheaper for each of the 3 I wanted than our local soft furnishing/blinds company and with their experience on boat fitments I thought it was a simple decision. In truth there probably is some merit in searching around to find alternatives if, as appears to be the case from others experiences, Oceanair are not the first choice in this, although I'm very happy with my experience and what they have delivered. I used ocean air and it wasn't slow process but we got there in the end. What you need is blinds with guide wires and if you look online there are lots of companies that supply these ( usually for a conservatory roof). I needed a very long blind ocean air were the only people who would put guide wires in a blind that long. I have similar blinds at home and the ocean air stuff is the same quality etc.

Oceanair are very expensive and mine have corroded in the shower and both heads. Breeze Blinds are the guys to speak to as mentioned above. They'll be doing mine in the spring. Much more sensible pricing.

FWIW a year ago, I ordered Oceanair Venetian blinds for the saloon, (the 16mm wide, alloy model) from the NL distributor for one reason or the other they "forgot" about my order, and I didn't go back to them, as I had doubts about maintenance and looks anyway last spring I ordered roman curtains, from a local domestic supplier here in Belgium, (silver grey fabirc) it was cheaper and I'm very pleased with the result, and very gladd we don't have the venetian blinds

I'd have thought that Roman blinds would be better as they're simpler with far fewer moving parts.

Problem is Roman blinds obscure 1/3 or the window opening.

Isn't that a good thing? In the Med would you ever want them totally open?

Sadly no mosquito nets - or at least not any I have found.

One think I like about venetian blinds vs. roman type, you can angle them higher on the inside, lower on the outside, which stops direct sunlight coming in at all (to prevent wood bleaching), but you can still see out. My Oceanair blinds which have a metallic finish haven't rusted at all and they're >10 yrs old.
