History of Morgan
Founded in 1965, Morgan Yacht Corporation is one of the great pioneers in the boat manufacturing industry. Morgan was established by Charley Morgan in St. Petersburg, Florida, where he began by building a variety of vessels. Morgan's first designed boat, Paper Tiger, won numerous races, immediately establishing the brand's reputation for high-performance vessels. Over the years, Morgan Yachts has experienced several ownership changes, including being part of the Beatrice Foods conglomerate in the 1970s and later being purchased by Catalina Yachts.Catalina Yachts, under the leadership of Frank Butler, continued the production of some of the classic Morgan models and even fused the Morgan designs into new Catalina models. This is particularly evident in the Catalina-Morgan 440, a deck saloon cruiser that inherited Morgan's construction standard and Catalina's interior design. During this time, Charley Morgan, founder of Morgan Yachts, moved away from the business and delved into other ventures.Today, Morgan Yachts is no longer in operation. However, the brand’s legacy is evident in various marinas where the older models like Out Islander or Morgan 41 are still considered reliable cruising boats. The designs and the reputation for performance and quality continue to live on through Catalina Yachts, which has its base in Largo, Florida. The fusion of Morgan's principles with Catalina's strengths ensured that the spirit of Morgan Yachts would continue to sail the seas even though the nameplate is no longer in production.

Latest: No one remembers the mast snapping before 56m superyacht Bayesian sunk, says crew
No one recalls seeing the mast snap on board the 56-metre Perini Navi sailing yacht Bayesian which sunk yesterday (19 August) off the Italian island of Sicily. The eyewitness account of a crewmember on board the vessel, which was obtained by BOAT International , said that the boat was struck by a freak weather event which led to the yacht heeling at around 20 degrees to starboard. As crewmembers were securing items, the heeling angle began to increase rapidly until the yacht started sinking.
The crewmembers who were up on deck were able to evacuate the yacht with minor injuries. The yacht is understood to have sunk in just twelve minutes, and it is believed that a "major ingress" of water from the top down would have caused the sinking, according to a captain who wishes to remain anonymous. This is based on the fact that no breaches have been reported in the yacht's hull, and the fact that the yacht should have been able to remain afloat with two flooded compartments.
"Very difficult to understand what could have overwhelmed a vessel of that size" says captain of sistership
The captain of the sistership to the sunken 56-metre Perini Navi sailing yacht Bayesian has said it is "very difficult to understand what could have overwhelmed a vessel of that size" and called the 56-metre Perini Navi series "bulletproof".
David Hutchinson, captain of Rosehearty , said he had taken the yacht around the world multiple times and he had "total faith in the boat". "We've been to Antarctica and Chile, and we've had her in 70 knots of wind," he says, and the vessel had never put them in a situation that felt unmanageable.
However, Hutchinson noted there were differences between Bayesian and Rosehearty ; notably, Bayesian's 74-metre mast, which would have been heavier and added increased windage. The yacht's layout was also different, with guest accommodation on Bayesian located further forward.
Who's currently missing in the Bayesian disaster?
The yacht's sinking in Italy has resulted in five confirmed deaths, one of which is understood to be the yacht's chef, and two additional people missing.
The missing individuals are:
- British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, once dubbed 'Britain's Bill Gates'
- Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah
- Morgan Stanley's chairman, Jonathan Bloomer
- Judy Bloomer, wife of Morgan Stanley chairman
- Chris Morvillo, a lawyer working for London-based law firm Clifford Chance
- Neda Morvillo, an American jewellery designer and Chris' wife
It is understood that the yacht was being used to celebrate Lynch's recent victory in a 13-year £8 billion fraud acquittal.
Live updates
- A search and rescue is currently underway for two people missing in the waters off Palermo on the Italian island of Sicily. According to Reuters, four bodies have now been found in the sunken yacht, but their identities have not been revealed. Two people are still unaccounted for.
- Mike Lynch, a British technology entrepreneur who co-founded Autonomy Corporation and founded Invoke Capital, is among the missing.
- Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, and a one-year-old are among the fifteen people rescued along with Bayesian' s captain, James Cutfield.
- Palermo Coastguard has confirmed the body that has been recovered is that of the yacht's chef.
- Another sailing vessel in the area, the 42-metre Sir Robert Baden Powell , is understood to have stepped in to offer assistance in the initial rescue.
- Divers have been able to reach Bayesian' s sunken hull, which lies at 45 metres of depth about half a mile from the coast. The yacht had the largest aluminium masts of any sailing yacht on the water.
- Eyewitnesses in the area reported "hurricane" conditions off the coast but local weather websites did not indicate any severe squall, which suggests that the weather event was not forecast.
- At around 5am local time on 19 August, Bayesian was hit by bad weather and sunk. The sailing yacht was anchored or idle at the time of the incident.
Built in Italy by renowned builder Perini Navi and delivered in 2008, the yacht's naval architecture was developed by Ron Holland Design while the interior design is by Rémi Tessier . She was formerly known as Salute and was last refitted in 2016. She was listed for sale earlier this year, according to BOATPro . The yacht had accommodation for nine guests and 12 crew.

Mike Lynch, recently acquitted in HP-Autonomy fraud case, is missing after yacht capsized off Sicily (updated)
Update 2 : His body has now been identified. Story here .
Update : Authorities have yet to access the inside of the sunken yacht, and Mike Lynch is still classified as missing. Other details have emerged in the interim.
The accident appears to have been caused by a major storm and a resulting tornado-like water column that ensnared and damaged the yacht. Among the other six people still missing are Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter and Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer. The voyage was to celebrate Lynch being acquitted of criminal charges in the U.S., and several members of his legal team were also on board. (The ship was registered to Lynch’s wife, one of the survivors.) By a terrible coincidence, the other person acquitted in Lynch’s trial — Autonomy’s finance head Stephen Chamberlain — had died just a few days before when he was hit by a car while out jogging. Original article continues below.
Mike Lynch, the investor and high-profile founder of U.K. tech firm Autonomy, has been declared missing at sea after the yacht he was on, the Bayesian , capsized in a storm off the coast of Sicily early Monday morning.
TechCrunch confirmed with a source close to the rescue operation that Lynch is one of six people missing from the boat. Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, is one of the 15 who have been rescued. One body has been found.
The news is a dramatic, tragic development for one of the more colorful, and sometimes controversial, figures in technology out of the U.K.
Lynch’s enterprise technology firm Autonomy was acquired in 2011 by HP for $11 billion — a major milestone for U.K. technology. But it quickly turned sour, and HP sued Lynch and other executives at the company, arguing it was misled in the transaction.
HP claimed that the deal led to a $4 billion loss — money it then demanded from Lynch and his former CFO. Lynch (pictured above, left) long asserted that he acted in good faith and that he was being made into a scapegoat over a merger gone bad.
That legal drama went on for more than a decade and involved a host of other thorny chapters, including Lynch’s extradition to the U.S. and a lot of very bad publicity for Lynch. It also led to a second civil case that took place in 2022 in the U.K., which Lynch lost.
The U.S. criminal case, where Lynch was charged with 15 counts of fraud and conspiracy, went to trial earlier this year in San Francisco. Finally, in June, Lynch was acquitted .
“I am elated with today’s verdict and grateful to the jury for their attention to the facts over the last ten weeks. My deepest thanks go to my legal team for their tireless work on my behalf,” Lynch said at the time. “I am looking forward to returning to the UK and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field.”
In the interim years, Lynch built up a profile in the U.K. as an investor, most prominently as the founder of Invoke Capital . The VC firm was the biggest investor in cybersecurity firm Darktrace, a connection that was not without its own controversy . It also invested in Sophia Genetics , Featurespace and Luminance, among others. And it appeared that this is the route that he was set to continue.
Our thoughts go out to his family, friends and colleagues. We’ll update this post as we learn more.

Remarkable way billionaire tech tycoon, five others could be found alive in Sicily yacht search
The clock is ticking on the search for six people two days after a billionaire’s yacht sank – but experts say they could be alive.
Tycoon and 18yo daughter pulled from water
Horror CCTV captures final moments of yacht
36 flights axed, 201 delayed for missing item
Divers are running out of time to find a missing British tech tycoon and five others alive after a superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily during a storm on Monday.
Billionaire Mike Lynch , 59, his daughter, Hannah, 18, and Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer, 70, are among the six people still missing. One body was found early on during the search – believed to be chef Recaldo Thomas – and 15 people were rescued.
They had been celebrating Mr Lynch’s acquittal in a fraud trial in June over the sale of his tech firm Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $US11 billion ($16 billion) back in 2011.
Hopes are dwindling to find the missing six people alive, but experts say it is possible they could be trapped in air pockets that are yet to be reached by the divers.
If that is the case, an engineer who led the salvage operation when Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia capsized in 2012, said there was a maximum of three days to get them out.
“They’ve got a very small window of time to try to find people stuck inside with hopefully an air pocket, and they could be rescued,” Mr Sloane told Sky News.
“You’ve got a maximum of two to three days to try to get someone out, so the next 24 hours are critical.
“If the yacht is on its side, it might have more air pockets than if it’s upright. She’s got quite a large keel, and that will deflect and put her on her side, I’m sure.”
The 56-metre yacht, named Bayesian , capsized at about 4am local time on Monday (12pm AEST). Two days will have past at about noon on Wednesday Australian time, and three days will be at up the same time on Thursday.
Dr Jean-Baptiste Souppez, fellow of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects, agreed on Tuesday the next 24 hours were crucial to find survivors trapped inside.
He said it was “impossible to predict accurately” but there was hope for air pockets inside the vessel because it sank quickly within just a few minutes and it remains in tact and on its side.
“There are records of survivors found in such air pockets: Harrison Okene’s rescue after three days trapped in an air pocket is well-documented thanks to the diver’s video of the rescue,” he said in comments released by the UK’s Science Media Centre.
“Yacht races such as the Vendée Globe have seen competitor Jean Le Cam trapped inside his overturned yacht for 16 hours before another competitor could come to the rescue.”
Dr Souppez said just like in the Titan submersible disaster last year, rescuers may be “looking for is a banging noise at regular intervals” to find survivors.
The OceanGate submersible went missing in June last year while attempting to view the Titanic wreck, prompting a huge multinational search that gained intense worldwide interest.
It was missing for days before debris was found and it was determined the sub had imploded, killing all five people on board – including British billionaire explorer Hamish Harding, OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, Titanic expert Paul Henri ‘PH’ Nargeolet , British Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood, and his son Suleman Dawood.
Why is the search is so difficult?
Specialist cave divers and their equipment were flown to Sicily from the mainland to access the confined spaces of the sunken vessel.
They are restricted to 12 minutes for each dive because of the water pressure, according to fire service spokesman Luca Cari.
It takes one minute to get down and another minute to get back, meaning they have just 10 minutes at a time to search the yacht, which is lying largely intact on the seabed some 50 metres down.
While Italy’s coastguard said the search continued without a break, Captain Vincenzo Zagarola said it was “difficult to imagine” it would end well.
The divers are trying to access the cabins where it is feared some people became trapped.
It is understood furniture has blocked their way making this even more difficult.
“The spaces inside the boat are very tight and if you encounter an obstacle it is very complicated to move forward, just as it is very difficult to find alternative routes,” said Mr Cari said.
Reportedly owned by Mr Lynch’s family, Bayesian was built by Italian shipbuilding firm Perini Navi in 2008.
Its 75-metre mast was the world’s tallest aluminium sailing mast, according to the Charter World website.
A photograph posted on social media by the Baia Santa Nicolicchia bar in Porticello showed the yacht lit up, its towering mast shining in the darkness, just a few hours before the storm hit.
Matthew Schanck, from the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told news agency AFP it was an “extraordinary event”.
“This is a large, luxurious superyacht that has founded quite quickly in a touristy, well-known sailing area off Sicily. It’s pretty unprecedented,” he said.
What caused the yacht to sink?
Bayesian is said to have disappeared into the sea within minutes of being hit by a tornado-like storm off the Sicilian town of Porticello.
The British-flagged vessel was anchored some 700 metres from port when the waterspout struck, according to witnesses.
Karsten Borner, skipper of a yacht anchored nearby, described a “very strong hurricane gust” that hit. He was battling to keep his vessel steady when suddenly “we noticed that the ship behind us was gone”.
“First came the wind, then the water – it was definitely a tornado,” said local fisherman Giovanni Lococco, describing the waterspout.
The ship’s captain James Calfield, 51, spoke from hospital and said had no idea the tornado was coming towards the ship.
“We didn’t see it coming,” he told Italian newspaper La Repubblica
The president of the Italian Meteorological Society, Luca Mercalli, said the yacht’s crew should have woken the guests and given them life jackets given the weather warnings overnight, The Telegraph reported.
An expert at the scene, who was not named, told news agency Reuters officials were investigating whether the yacht’s crew had closed the hatches before the storm struck, and would look at whether other appropriate measures had been taken.
Sam Jefferson, editor of magazine Sailing Today , also said that open hatches could have caused the yacht to sink.
“I imagine all the doors were open because it was hot, so there were enough hatches and doors open that it filled with water very quickly and sank like that,” he said.
“The reason it got pinned over so hard was because the mast is huge.”
What is a waterspout?
“A waterspout is a narrow column of rotating air below a thunderstorm that occurs over water” and is “part of the same weather ‘family’ as tornadoes”, explained Dr Peter Inness, a meteorologist at the University of Reading in Britain, in comments released by the UK’s Science Media Centre.
More Coverage
Like tornadoes, they suck up air in a rotating motion, usually causing less damage than tornadoes over land, however.
While many waterspouts are “fairly inconsequential”, lasting just a few seconds, some can pack winds of more than 100 kilometres per hour, said Dr Inness.

The bodies of a billionaire tech tycoon and his teenage daughter have been pulled from the water after divers discovered them in the wreckage of his superyacht.
Horrifying new CCTV has captured the final moments of a $59 million superyacht that sank with 22 people on board when it was struck by a tornado-like storm.
One of Japan’s busiest airports was thrown into chaos over a missing item from a store, causing 36 flights to be cancelled and 201 delayed.
Who was onboard tech mogul Mike Lynch's Bayesian yacht?
Topic: Disasters, Accidents and Emergency Incidents
Six people are missing, including a man dubbed the British Bill Gates, after a luxury yacht sank off the Sicilian coast.
British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch — freshly acquitted from a decade-long trial — had invited his work colleagues aboard a trip through the Mediterranean coast when a freak storm saw the yacht sink within moments.
Fifteen people escaped from the sinking vessel. The search for the missing continues.
Here's what we know so far:
What happened?
The Italian coastguard said the yacht — the Bayesian — was anchored off the shore of port city Porticello, near the Sicilian capital Palermo, when it was hit by bad weather sometime after 4am on Monday, local time.
Eyewitnesses said it vanished quickly beneath the waves shortly before dawn.
Managers of the sailing vessel Bayesian, Camper & Nicholsons, confirmed to the ABC that the Bayesian encountered severe weather and subsequently sank.
"Our priority is assisting with the ongoing search and providing all necessary support to the rescued passengers and crew," they said.
"The wind was very strong. Bad weather was expected, but not of this magnitude," a coastguard official told Reuters.
Sicily's civil protection agency head, Salvo Cocina, said a waterspout — a tornado over the water — could have struck the yacht.
"They were in the wrong place at the wrong time," Mr Cocina added.
Storms and heavy rainfall had swept down Italy in recent days after weeks of scorching heat, lifting the temperature of the Mediterranean Sea to record levels and raising the risk of extreme weather conditions, experts told Reuters.
"The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius, which is almost 3 degrees more than normal. This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms," meteorologist Luca Mercalli said.

Captain Karsten Borner of the Sir Robert Baden Powell vessel told journalists he noticed the Bayesian nearby during the storm, but after it calmed he saw a red flare and realised the ship had simply disappeared.
Mr Borner said he and a crew member boarded their tender and found a lifeboat with 15 people, some of them injured, who they then took aboard and alerted the coast guard.
Search crews, including helicopters and divers, are continuing to search the wreckage, lying at a depth of 49 metres.
Specialist divers reached the ship on Monday but access was limited due to objects in the way, the fire brigade said.
The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment.
The Foreign Commonwealth and Development office said it was "providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families".
Sicilian prosecutors have also opened an investigation into the event.
Who is missing?
Lawyer Chris Morvillo (left), entrepreneur Mike Lynch, and Morgan Stanley chairman Jonathan Bloomer are among the missing.
There were 12 passengers and 10 crew members aboard the yacht.
Mr Cocina said the crew and passengers hailed from a variety of countries, including Britain, the United States, Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain.
Of the 22, one man is confirmed dead and another six people are still missing.
They are believed to be inside the hull, fire rescue spokesperson Luca Cari said.
Fabio Cefalù, a fisherman who said he responded to a flare from the vessel but found it sunk, said he stayed at the site for three hours without finding anyone.
"I think they are inside, all the missing people," he said.
Rescue teams recovered the body of the yacht's onboard chef on Monday, identified as Antiguan citizen Ricardo Thomas.
The still missing people include:
- Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah
- Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of global financial services company Morgan Stanley International
- Chris Morvillo , a lawyer at the British multinational law firm Clifford Chance. He worked on Mr Lynch's lawsuit against Hewlett-Packard
- The identities of the remaining two missing are still unconfirmed
Who was rescued?
Fifteen people escaped from the sinking ship.
Eight have been hospitalised and others were taken to a nearby hotel.

Among those rescued were:
- Mr Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, who was the owner of the yacht
- Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter, Sofia. Ms Golunski is a partner at Mr Lynch's firm, Invoke Capital. She says she momentarily lost hold of Sofia in the water but managed to hold her up above the waves until the lifeboat was inflated
- Ms Golunski's husband James Emslie
- New Zealand captain of the yacht James Catfield. He told Italian newspaper La Repubblica the crew didn't see the storm coming
- A lone Dutch citizen was identified by the Dutch foreign ministry as being rescued, but was not identified
Who is Mike Lynch?
Mr Lynch, once hailed as Britain’s king of technology, was recently freed from a Silicon Valley lawsuit that tarnished his legacy.
The 59-year-old Cambridge-educated mathematician created Autonomy , a search engine that could pore through emails and other internal business documents to help companies find vital information more quickly.
He received the OBE for his innovation in 2006.
He then sold the software to Hewlett-Packard (HP) for $US11 billion ($16 billion) in 2011, with Mr Lynch personally netting $US800 million.
HP valued Autonomy at $US46 billion ($68 billion) in the months leading up to the deal.

But the deal quickly turned sour after he was accused of forging the software's financial records to make the sale.
As part of a decades-long legal battle against HP, Mr Lynch was extradited to the UK on criminal fraud charges.
He steadfastly denied any wrongdoing, asserting that he was being made a scapegoat for HP's own bungling.
He was eventually cleared of all charges in June this year.
Although he avoided a possible prison sentence, Lynch still faced a bill from a civil case in London that HP mostly won during 2022. Damages haven't been determined in that case, but HP is seeking $US4 billion.
Following the San Francisco trial, Mr Lynch said he would return to the UK and do what he loved most: "[being with] my family and innovating in my field."
The holiday appeared to be something of a celebration after Mr Lynch's acquittal, with guests including some of the people who had stood by Lynch throughout the ordeal.

In a separate act of tragedy, Mr Lynch's co-defendant in the trial, Stephen Chamberlain, died on Monday, after a road accident left him critically injured.
Mr Chamberlain — Autonomy's former vice-president of finance alongside Mr Lynch — was hit by a car in Cambridgeshire on Saturday morning and had been placed on life support.
What is the Bayesian?
The luxury yacht is 56m long sailboat, with a 75m mast labelled as the tallest aluminium mast in the world.
It was previously named Salute when it flew under a Dutch flag.
The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites and a crew of 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. It was last refitted in 2020.
Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $AU 321,000) a week.

The ship also won a string of awards for its design.
Ms Golunski said the yacht had travelled through the Aeolian Islands, Milazzo and Cefalù before sinking.
It is likely the yacht's name would resonate with Mr Lynch because his PhD thesis and the software that made his fortune was based on Bayesian theory.

Morgan Stanley International chairman among missing from sunken yacht, reports say 20 August 2024 • 12:44pm
Bayesian was a 56-metre (184 ft) sailing superyacht, built as Salute by Perini Navi at Viareggio, Italy, and delivered in 2008. [1] The ship was last refitted in 2020 [2] and was in the beneficial ownership of Angela Bacares, wife of the technology entrepreneur Mike Lynch, when it sank on 19 August 2024. [3]
No one recalls seeing the mast snap on board the 56-metre Perini Navi sailing yacht Bayesian which sunk yesterday (19 August) off the Italian island of Sicily. The eyewitness account of a crewmember on board the vessel, which was obtained by BOAT International, said that the boat was struck by a freak weather event which led to the yacht heeling at around 20 degrees to starboard.
