Yacht Clubs in the Boston Area

Yacht clubs are an important institution on the Boston waterfront, and they are famous for being among the oldest in the country. For example, the South Boston Yacht Club was founded in 1868 and was one of the first 20 yacht clubs in the country to open its doors. Incidentally, most waterfronts in the West and South of the United States are served by marinas, but that is less so in Boston. Instead, many boaters join a local yacht club, and there are over 70 of them around Boston to choose from.

Most yacht clubs operate on a membership basis, and rules and fees vary a great deal among clubs. Each yacht club is a unique organisation with its own traditions, ideas, and membership. However, most clubs provide the most essential services to boaters, like docking, mooring, launch services, racing programmes, youth programmes, and social events. Increasingly, yacht clubs offer both regular memberships and social memberships. The latter accommodates folks who do not use the boating facilities of the club but simply want to be part of the social events and privileges of the club. Such memberships are generally half the cost of a regular membership.

Membership fees vary and depend a lot on the location, size, and type of facilities of the club. Many clubs also require a one-time initiation fee. Some yacht clubs are easy to join; others have a waiting list and may require recommendations by other members.

Many yacht clubs rent out their facilities to non-members, offering their attractive waterfront venues for weddings, birthdays, or functions.

You may have noticed a new launch driver last fall. Arial has joined Alex, Alex, and Katrina in sharing  launch driving duties for the 2023 season. In addition to having a coast guard license for launch operations, Arial is an FAA certified flight instructor in addition to being a commercial pilot.

This is our 49th year of business, we look forward to keeping the great sport of sailing alive in Boston for current and future generations with an expanding fleet of diverse yachts, superior sailing instruction, and a commitment to customer service that has made the company successful all these years. The Boston Harbor Sailing Club was founded in 1974 with a few small, borrowed and owed boats at a time when Boston Harbor and the downtown wharves were a dark shadow of what they are today. New and refurbished buildings replaced old structures, new marinas replaced derelict pilings, and best of all, the clean water we all paid for is here to stay.

Today the Club has 70 boats 23-41 feet in length and two locations – Boston and  Westport. Though primarily a membership club and sailing school, all Club services are open to the public. We rent sailboats to visitors and past members and moorings for transient and seasonal use.

The Club looks back with pride to the thousands we have introduced to the sport of sailing, many who have made it a lifetime endeavor, including several members and students who have sailed around the world, or made numerous ocean passages. The company takes pride in knowing we were here at the beginning, the first club in Boston Harbor to making sailing accessible to the public.

Wessagussett yacht club.

A private cooperative/member maintained, full service yacht club for both power boaters and sailors. It is located on the shore of North Weymouth at the mouth of the Weymouth Fore River adjacent to Wessagussett Beach. From the club members enjoy quick and easy access to boating on the South Shore including Quincy Bay, Boston Harbor, Hingham Bay, World’s End and the Back and Fore Rivers.

Clubs have been around for as long as mankind has shared common interests. In New England Yacht Clubs, the advent of yachting for pleasure rather than boating as a profession, plus the familiarity of famed yacht clubs in the United Kingdom and Europe, set the stage for these nautical groups.

Today, hundreds of yacht clubs from Connecticut to Maine operate from May to October. Some are known for racing, others are more social, several welcome both power and sail, many have junior programs, and just about all have full-service waterfront clubhouses. Most are private clubs rather than public recreational facilities.

That said, members of clubs either affiliated with U.S. Sailing or the National Association of Yacht Clubs can enjoy reciprocity. A letter of introduction prior to arrival paves the way. Beyond this, anyone can cruise by and admire the stately clubhouses as well as watch regattas underway. Here are eight notable New England yacht clubs.

Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club

‍ Boothbay Harbor, ME

‍ Called the Boating Capital of New England for the array of craft on its waters, Boothbay Harbor is a beacon for local and visiting yachtsmen who come to experience the fabled Down East cruising grounds and picturesque bay. Incorporated by the Maine Legislature in 1895, the club outgrew its original inner harbor location decades ago with its clubhouse, sailing center, tennis courts and docks now in West Boothbay Harbor. The signature fleet of locally designed 21-foot Boothbay Harbor One Designs launched in 1938 still sail. This year, the club added a vintage boat class to its annual regatta in July, a move that brings together its renowned racing tradition with the region's shipbuilding history. bhyc.net

Portland Yacht Club

‍ Falmouth, ME

‍ Founded in 1869 after several Portland area yachtsmen cruised to Boothbay Harbor and back, the club is one of the oldest continually operated in America and has counted U.S. presidents as members, including George and Barbara Bush. A key attraction is its location on the shores of Casco Bay, where the 365-some calendar islands make for excellent cruising and natural marks for racing. The club started its first one-design fleet with a Starling Burgess sloop in 1903. The tradition continues with J/24s and Etchells. Boston Yacht Club

Marblehead, MA

‍ Located 17 miles north of Boston, this 1866-founded club counts famous naval architect Nathanael G. Herreshoff, then still a teenager, as one of its original members. The club operated in six different venues through the years, but all operations are now in Marblehead. The membership is keenly sailing oriented, so much so that the start line of many races was reconfigured to be spectator-friendly, having the fleet sail toward shore before heading seaward. Hundreds of land-lubbing onlookers and often 400-plus spectator boats watch as yachts depart on the world's longest-running offshore ocean race, the Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Race, which starts July 11, 2021. bostonyc.org

Corinthian Yacht Club

‍ The who's who founders and members of this 1885-founded club on Marblehead Neck include past and present boat builders and sailmakers such as John Rhodes, John Alden, George O'day, Ted Hood and Robbie Doyle. Today, the club is a hot spot all summer long, from junior sailing programs to major regattas hosted almost weekly from June to August. The signature event is the century-plus-old Marblehead Race Week, where 200+ boats compete in classes such as International One Designs, J/70s, Rhodes 19s and Viper 640s. Edgartown Yacht Club

‍ Edgartown, MA

‍ Located on Martha's Vineyard, what was once the main whaling wharf in Edgartown is now home to this club's facilities over the water. The first members in 1905 raced catboats, knockabouts and sloops followed by clambakes and ice cream socials. Nowadays, while dock space is limited, the town-run mooring field in the harbor is the best vantage point. The prevailing southwest breeze in the summer is extremely reliable, making for superb racing until winds lie back down in the evening. The club's major races, like its nearly century-old annual regatta, often maintain a crew board or listing of yachts looking for race crew. Ida Lewis Yacht Club

Newport, RI

‍ Namesake of the famous 19th century keeper of the Lime Rock Light in Newport Harbor, the 1928-incorporated club is now rooted on this rock. The club's burgee gives a nod to Lewis, with the 18 white stars circling the blue lighthouse representing the number of lives she saved. Today, a small light on top of the clubhouse remains with a few artifacts on display, although the bulk of Ida Lewis memorabilia is displayed at the Newport Historical Society Museum. The club has an active summer-long racing and cruising calendar, with cruises to neighboring islands. ilyc.org

New York Yacht Club, Harbour Court

‍ Rules are strict on who gets into the prestigious New York Yacht Club in Newport, a century-old residence modeled after a French chateau that the club purchased in 1988. Even from the outside, cruising by on Brenton Cove or from Sail Newport across the water, this piece of architectural eye candy is equally impressive when its fleet is docked and characterizes quintessential New England yachting. Those lucky to be invited on the grounds by a member can see the first clubhouse, an 1845-built Gothic Revival building, which was moved to Harbour Court in 1999 and is still used for meetings. nyyc.org/harbour-court

Essex Yacht Club

‍ Essex, CT

‍ The Connecticut River and its beautiful view is the focal point for activities at this nearly 90-year-old club. Yacht racing happens most weekends in the summer. Regattas range from community-oriented events such as the Special Olympics Invitational Regatta in June on the club-owned fleet of Ideal 18's to highly competitive one-design, double-handed and distance races. Onshore sunsets are spectacular to see from the riverfront benches, grassy lawn or gazebo. Frequently Asked Questions

What is a boat club.

Carefree Boat Club is a private club. This means that our boats are only available to Members. We do not rent or charter our boats. Our members are the only ones with unlimited access to the fleet and they  never pay a fee to use the boats .

Is It Truly "Unlimited?"

Yes! Members have true unlimited access to boats.  Boat as much as you like .    

Is It Worth The Price?

It really is. With membership as little as 1/3 cost of owning a boat, you can cross numerous expenses off your list such as: boat purchase, slip fee, insurance, maintenance, repairs, taxes, towing and winterization.

How Does The Training Work?

All members get as much training as they need on and off the water. "On The Water" training is done with a certified instructor. Training covers CBC processes, general navigation, docking and safety.

How Soon Can I Get On The Water?

After joining, new members (without boating experience) can normally be boating within days of joining. If you have previous boat training, you can be on the water even sooner.

Are The Boats Well-Maintained?

Absolutely, in fact, all boats are inspected weekly by the CBC dock staff using a 50 point checklist of safety equipment, hull condition, electronics, and general mechanical items.

Drink in this new entry in the soda pop presidential poll: Kamala’s Berry Surprise

Yacht club soda, based in north providence, r.i., will now pit donald’s trumpian punch against a new flavor named for the new democratic presidential candidate, kamala harris.

NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Soda Pop Poll that Yacht Club Soda conducts during presidential election years had been all set, with Donald’s Trumpian Punch going head-to-head with Joe’s Bidenomics Berry.

But when President Biden dropped out of the race on July 21, the 109-year-old North Providence soda company scrambled to adapt, and on Wednesday, new labels arrived for Kamala’s Berry Surprise. This year, the soda poll will gauge the combined Biden/Harris bottle sales vs. the sales of Trump soda.

“Like the rest of America, and the world, we were surprised by President Biden’s unprecedented decision to drop out of the race,” owner John Sgambato said Wednesday. “But making soda at Yacht Club never stops, and our team is fired up to release Kamala’s Berry Surprise.”

When the Rhode Island Report podcast visited the bottling plant earlier in the summer, Sgambato said he would be prepared for the possibility that Biden might exit the race. “We’ll have to shift quickly if that happens,” he said. “We’ll figure something out.”

He said Frankie Galasso did the art for the new label, and Kristina Cinquegrana Petrilli produced the design.

In the 2020 Soda Pop Poll , Donald’s Big League Punch beat Joe’s Berry-Blue Lemonade 54 percent to 33 percent, with 11 percent “going independent” by purchasing Gaspee Point Berrymelon Rebellion.

And in 2016′s poll, Donald’s Populist Punch edged Hillary’s Liberal Limeade, 46.3 percent to 44.5 percent, while 9.2 percent went for Gary’s Sassy Sarsaparilla, named for Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson.

Sgambato said people tend to base their purchases on both flavor and political preferences.

“We definitely have some people that come in and feel like, ‘Oh, I’m not buying that one or I’m not doing this one,’ but most people will grab both and try them,” he said. “And then if they like one more, they’ll come back and grab some more, because it is a limited run.”

The flavors are available at Yacht Club’s factory store, farmers markets, and local stores and restaurants.

Captain of boat that rescued Bayesian survivors details mega-yacht sinking ‘within two minutes’

The captain of a boat who helped rescue survivors from the Bayesian superyacht has recalled how the boat sank "in just two minutes" off the coast of Sicily on Monday, 19 August.

The vessel sank in a severe storm , with the bodies of five people recovered from the wreckage.

Tech tycoon Mike Lynch has been identified as one of the bodies recovered, along with Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judith Bloomer, lawyer Christopher Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo.

The boat’s chef Recaldo Thomas was confirmed dead on Monday,

"We couldn't see them anymore, they disappeared from the radar," captain Karsten Borner told Sky News of the moment the boat sank.

Ever since news broke that the Boston Celtics' majority owner, Wyc Grousbeck, was planning on selling his shares of the team, speculation and rumor have followed on who might step into Grousbeck's shoes as the team's new owner. Current minority owner Steve Pagliuca is on record as planning to bid for the ball club, and there have been rumbles that Red Sox owner John Henry may also bid (to the horror of Sox fans).

But now we are hearing new rumbles that a billionaire may have eyes for a new green and white toy, with the eponymous host of the "Bill Simmons" podcast suggesting Amazon tycoon Jeff Bezos potentially mulling getting into the bidding as well. "In the last few days there’s been some I think legitimate buzz about Jeff Bezos buying the Celtics, and I think it’s real," said Simmons via HoopsHype .

"I think he’s going to be one of the suitors," he added. "Which got me thinking, Jeff Bezos when he’s looking at the Celtics, what is he seeing?"

"What does he want? And I think the only way it makes sense is that it’s one of the crown jewel franchises," said Simmons. "That’s why you get it."

"To him, it would be no different than if you bought this famous gigantic $300 million yacht, but I think it’s real that he’s potentially in the mix for this."

As long as he doesn't cheap out on the roster, most Boston fans could probably live with it, but Pagliuca is likely the best fit for future success considering his proven track record.
