Which Superyacht is Right for You?

The type of superyachts best suited for you depends on the on-water experience you want. You may want power and speed, ensuring a motor-powered superyacht is right for you. Alternatively, you may want to feel the wind pushing you across the water, so a sailing yacht is best suited for your needs. In either respect, the most popular superyachts feature incredible amenities, top performance and exceptional design that allows them to retain their value for resale or charter.

When choosing the ideal superyacht, you – with the help of your broker – will weigh various options and features, including style, type of yacht, build pedigree, crew layout, facilities, décor and more. Whether you are looking for a large, modern motor yacht or a classically styled gentlemen’s yacht, Northrop & Johnson has a wide selection of superyacht types available for sale.

When buying or building a yacht, remember: first and foremost, your yacht is for you and your family or friends to use. What type of experience and use are you looking for in your ownership? Are you interested in a new or used yacht? Custom built or semi-custom? How are you planning to use your yacht? If you are planning to charter your yacht to help offset some of the running costs, then factor in the charterer, but remember, a yacht is very personal and you must consider your own needs as a priority.

This 250-Foot Explorer Yacht Puts Every Corner of the Globe Within Reach

A king among explorer yachts, yersin can go from the polar regions to the tropics without refueling…, michael verdon, michael verdon's most recent stories, why this luxe cruise ship’s 3-year world tour got stuck in belfast before it started, tiara’s newest 56-foot, 600 hp boat is a speed demon in a full-feature package.

250 foot yacht

Piriou’s Yersin , the 250-foot expedition yacht that made its debut at the Monaco Yacht Show , is the first yacht from the French shipyard. The yacht’s owner, Francois Fiat, chose the yard because he wanted a boat that would be as robust as the commercial vessels Piriou has built in its 50-year history.

Fiat named the boat after Alexandre Yersin, the Swiss born, French scientist and adventurer who traveled the world to find cures for diseases like rabies and the bubonic plague. Fiat and Piriou had three criteria that the world-class explorer had to meet: Yersin had to be able to sail with an extended range in all waters—from the tropics to polar regions. The rugged behemoth also had to be as eco-friendly as possible, both in propulsion and its onboard systems. Finally, Yersin had to be extremely comfortable and versatile, since the owner and his guests could be spending months onboard.

The performance statistics of the eight-stateroom, 18-passenger yacht—which can also accommodate 24 crew members and two captains—show that Yersin will indeed be able to travel just about anywhere in the world. The displacement design, with its reinforced hull, is rated Ice Class so it can navigate among ice floes up to 15 inches thick. It can cruise comfortably in temperatures ranging from minus 4 degrees Fahrenheit to desert climates in excess of 122 degrees Fahrenheit.

Yersin ’s range of 15,000 nautical miles at 11 knots means the yacht can travel between the west coast of France and New York a total of five times without refueling. The boat could sail for 50 days without refueling or reprovisioning. It can store 21,000 gallons of fresh water, with the capacity to make 14,000 gallons per day. The yacht can even hover for 10 days in the same location without anchoring thanks to its GPS-based positioning system (a legal requirement when yachts move into areas with many reefs).

Despite the intrepid exterior, Fiat also wanted a boat that people would want to spend months aboard. In addition to the palatial owner’s suite, the seven guest staterooms all have full-size bathrooms, large-screen televisions, and advanced IT systems for comfort. The boat also has two gyms, two inner bars, multiple saloons, a hammam, massage and steam rooms, an observatory on the upper deck, and a large sundeck with a swimming pool and a shaded lounge. An interior elevator connects all six levels. In other words, Yersin is a moveable mansion.

Her green side shows up below deck, where a multifunction propulsion system offers redundant systems in case of malfunction. The six generators, two azimuth pumps, and jet pump can work independently of each other if one system fails—a contingency plan that would come in handy if cruising some uninhabited islands in the South Pacific. Using the jet pump also lets the yacht cruise into shallow waters like Amazonian inland rivers or into tributaries leading into the Great Lakes.

In a nod to the scientist the boat is named after, Yersin also has interior space for a laboratory, with a seawater intake for water testing and satellite connections to global scientific networks. A 1,500-square-foot platform on the yacht provides space to house a seaplane, submarine, or a small navy of water toys. The boat is equipped with four tenders, including a 36-foot motorboat with a cabin for day trips along remote coasts. ( piriou.com )

Top 10 Superyacht Marinas in the United States

Best marinas to dock your boat..

Marine, marina, harbor, yacht club, port — not exactly synonyms, but close. A marina provides safe dockage for vessels of all sizes, often offering supplies, repair, and other facilities to those who rent a slip. A quick (but unreliable) Google search told us that there at about 12,000 marinas in the United States.

Whether that’s true or not, that’s a lot to sift through. But we did it — we found the top 10 superyacht marinas in the U.S.

1. Yacht Haven Grande | Miami, Florida

Yacht Haven Grande Miami

Coast 250: The mighty micro cruiser

  • March 30, 2020

Producing a boat that planes under power and sails like a thoroughbred has been an elusive quest for decades. Has Swallow Yachts’ Coast 250 succeeded where others have failed? David Harding went to find out

Swallow Yachts Coast 250

A carbon rig and laminate sails contribute to the sprightly performance. Credit: David Harding

Product Overview

  • Fast and easy to handle under sail
  • Smooth and efficient planing under power
  • Roomy and practical layout
  • Engine could do with more sound proofing
  • Foot-braces on cockpit seats would be useful
  • Self-tacking jib presents limitations

Price as reviewed:

Sailing yachts are designed to sail and motorboats to motor, right? And never the twain shall interbreed – at least not successfully? This hasn’t stopped people trying.

Motor-sailers have always been around. More recently we have also seen the planing power-sailer, as epitomised by the phenomenally successful MacGregor 26.

Some might argue that power-sailers, like motor-sailers, have been compromises that neither motor nor sail particularly well.

But whatever your views, the fact is that now, nearly 25 years after the power-sailing version of the MacGregor (the MacGregor 26X) appeared, we have a British-built boat of similar size that will motor efficiently and comfortably at 15 knots without compromise to its sailing ability.

A skipper helming a Coast 250

If you’re helming from the coaming, the engine box can be used as a foot brace. Credit: David Harding

So how has this been achieved, and what lessons have been learned from the attempts of earlier builders?

Well, all previous power-sailers that have sold in any number have had certain characteristics in common.

One is lacklustre sailing performance, even though I have met MacGregor owners who defend them to the hilt.

After MacGregor’s 26X came the 26M. It sailed slightly better but was still heavily compromised, as was the Polish-built Odin 26 (later reincarnated as the Imexus 27) and Legend’s Edge 27.

Video: Trailer sailing made easy

The best performer under sail was the Tide 28, which made the headlines when a 14-year-old Michael Perham sailed Cheeky Monkey across the Atlantic in 2007.

The challenge with designing a power-sailer is that sailing yachts and planing powerboats tend to have very different hull forms for good reason, even before you consider fundamentals like the sailing yacht’s need for ballast, a rig, and foils that generate lift.

Most power-sailers have had a large outboard on the broad stern of a hull with very little rocker, leading to an immersed transom to support the outboard’s weight and create sufficient lift for them to plane.

Interior of the Coast 250

The folding solid-wood oak table sits on top of the lifting keel housing. Credit: David Harding

In this respect they have been just like conventional planing powerboats.

The problem is that sailing yachts need rocker (fore-and-aft curvature to the underside of the hull) and a transom that’s clear of the water at rest. They don’t like a lot of weight in the stern either, so the shape of the conventional power-sailer does it no favours under sail.

An idea whose time has come?

It so happens that I have sailed (and motored) all these power-sailers over the past 20-odd years.

I was also living on the Dart in the 1980s when Ian Anderson launched his 37ft (11.3m) MRCB (multi-role cruising boat), which was powered by 165hp of Volvo Penta diesel and helped along when the throttle was opened by ‘variable hull geometry’ – essentially integrated trim tabs that flattened the stern sections.

I remember seeing the MRCB in its creamy-yellow livery charging around at high speed off the mouth of the river.

The engine of the Coast 250

A 70hp in its central well drives the Coast at up to 15 knots – or you can stick with 10hp for displacement speeds. Credit: David Harding

Sadly the idea never took off commercially but it was unquestionably ahead of its time.

Remembering the MRCB and having tested various power-sailers as well as many of the day-sailers and small cruisers built by Swallow Yachts, I was more than a little interested when Swallow’s Matt Newland mentioned that he was planning to develop a power-sailer whose sailing ability, he assured me, would not be compromised by its motoring performance.

This was a few years ago now — such projects take time.

It was clear from the outset that this boat would be very different from the MacGregor 26 and its ilk.

Swallow’s Coast 250 was to have – and does have – the 70hp outboard mounted in a well at the forward end of the cockpit, immediately abaft the keel case.

This overcomes the need for a broad, immersed transom that creates an enormous amount of drag under sail.

Coast 250

Moving the engine was the starting point.

Through CFD (computational fluid dynamics) testing with the Wolfson Unit in Southampton, Matt soon came to realise that, with an uncompromised sailing-boat hull form, this shift of weight alone was not the solution.

The boat still trimmed bow-up and created too much drag under power to achieve the speeds he wanted.

His solution was to fit trim tabs on the transom to eliminate stern-squat and bring the bow down at planing speeds.

Further CFD analysis, followed by on-the-water testing with a full-size plywood hull ballasted to sailing weight, showed that the tabs made the crucial difference and allowed efficient planing at 15 knots.

That’s how the Coast evolved, but what’s she like to motor and sail and how does she perform in testing conditions?

THE TEST VERDICT

In the words of Matt Newland, the Coast’s designer and builder, ‘this is not a perfect motorboat. It’s a sailing boat that has a big engine and some trim tabs. It’s not going to set any motorboater’s heart alight and I’m not expecting to convert any motorboaters to sailing, though I would love to.’

Whether or not Matt and the Coast succeed in introducing motorboaters to the delights of sailing, I’m sure they will gain converts in the form of sailors who might otherwise have moved to motorboating or chosen a more conventional sailing yacht.

He might also attract former (or current) owners of other power-sailers that they have found unrewarding or plain disappointing under sail.

The power-sailer concept has always had its appeal but, apart from the MRCB, the Coast is the only one I have come across that really seems to deliver the goods in both modes.

Great attention to detail has been paid to every aspect of the design.

WOULD SHE SUIT YOU AND YOUR CREW?

In many ways it’s a simple choice: do you want a boat of this size that sails well, offers roomy accommodation, will sit on a drying mooring, can be trailed behind a large family car and motors at 15 knots?

You will find precious little else, if anything, that does all that.

Even if the planing performance under power is of no consequence to you, the Coast’s other attributes make her worthy of attention.

She’s not cheap because of what she is.

For example, the carbon rig makes so much sense under both power and sail.

A cassette system around the gooseneck simplifies removal of the boom.

A boat of this size and weight can’t be described as a trailer-sailer, but she’s certainly a trailable sailer and an extremely clever, well-conceived, versatile and practical one too.

BOAT TEST: SWALLOW COAST 250 (WITH GALLERY)

250 foot yacht

Surely a little brutal modernism is a small price for a daysailer that gives you what you want… Sam Jefferson checks out Swallow Yachts’ Coast 250

It’s not always easy being an innovator. Take early automobile designer EL Cord, who, in the 1920s, introduced front-wheel drive, pop-up headlamps and a plethora of other revolutionary touches. Unfortunately, Cord did not survive the economic vagaries of the 1930s, leaving manufacturers such as the more conservative Ford, who continued to flourish. Boatbuilding – particularly in Europe – can also be fairly hidebound. Customers identify a yacht with a single mast, fin keel and two triangular sails as the yacht of choice and manufacturers generally are willing to work within those parameters.

It’s therefore refreshing when someone takes a look at things from a slightly different angle. Working within many of these constraints, Matt Newland of Swallow Yachts has nonetheless managed to produce a yacht that is really rather wild while also being practical and – most importantly – fun. His new Coast 250 does all the things you’d expect from a daysailer, but also constantly surprises. The design premise was very simple; Newland has a young family with varied interest in sailing, confessing: “They generally just want to get to the beach.” He therefore wanted to develop a daysailer/weekender that could accommodate his kids, was trailerable and had a shallow draught (Swallow Yachts is based in the notoriously tidal Cardigan Bay). Now, all that has been done before, but Newland came at it from the premise that when there is no wind, it’s infuriating plodding along at 5kt. It is, to be fair. So he set about building a yacht that would plane under power.

250 foot yacht

My thoughts went to a dark place when I heard this: namely the Macgregor 26x, one of the most successful – and awful – ‘sailing’ yachts ever built; it was essentially a power boat with a rig and swing keel tacked on and, yes it was good under power, but it sailed like a dog.

“Yes, yes, I know about the Macgregor,” Newland laughs. “The challenge I had was to come at things from the opposite direction and build a sailing yacht first and foremost, then think of how to get it planing under power.”

To this end, a pure sailing hull was developed with the ability to plane, not an abnormal feature. Then the problem of planing under power was addressed – the key was to stop the hull ‘squatting’ and creating a lot of wash with no improvement in speed. To this end, trim tabs have been built into the stern, while a 70hp outboard – the most efficient in terms of power-to-weight ratio – has been placed much more centrally. These two features combine to give this pure sailing yacht a motoring speed of 15kt under power.

Forward thinking

At this point, it’s important not to get hung up on this one aspect of the yacht. She’s first and foremost a sailing yacht and should be judged as such – so let’s take a closer look. Swallow Yachts used to be in the ‘modern classic’ end of the market, but that’s not a charge you can level at the Coast 250. She’s 24ft 10in (7.57m) long overall and features dramatic, angular lines with a plumb bow and a pair of chines running the length of the hull. The rig is carbon fibre and is designed to be dropped easily. She features a fully battened main plus a self -tacking jib. There is no backstay. There’s also a carbon fibre sprit for an asymmetric. Weight overall is a very modest 1,300kg. She has a profiled swing keel with a lead bulb and draws 1.85m with it down and 400mm with it up. Aft, there are those trim tabs, which essentially look and double up as an integrated bathing platform. There are also twin rudders with blades that can be manually shifted up and down. Initially, a single rudder was planned, but the turbulence from the propeller was uncomfortable at 15kt under power. You can choose an outboard engine with a power range of between 9.9hp and 70hp.

250 foot yacht

On deck, you have a surprisingly large self-draining cockpit that could fit six if you so wished. The engine is housed in the cockpit beneath a soundproofed cover, which swings up to provide easy access and also doubles as a seat. There is good storage in the cockpit lockers. The mainsheet is on a traveller just in front of the tiller and the rest of the running rigging is led via a bank of clutches to a single winch on top of the coachroof. Up forward, there is a very roomy anchor locker.

Step down below and you have a very simple layout that boasts an awful lot of light and space for such a small boat. There is room here for five people, while the generous freeboard allows for standing headroom. As you’d expect, there are some pleasingly clever touches, such as a galley that slides out from the aft port side. The space beneath this galley could either be an extra berth or – perhaps higher on most people’s lists – a fridge. Other than that, there is a decent sized double berth upfront and a very generous heads compartment aft to starboard. The workings of the swing keel are all easily accessible and the keel box doubles as the saloon table. It’s open plan, simple and uncomplicated, but very practical.

Slipping into Cardigan

The test was undertaken just outside Swallow Yachts’ front door in Cardigan. This meant that the Coast’s swing keel was going to be fully demonstrated, as this is an absurdly tidal stretch of water. The breeze was offshore and the forecast was for between 15 and 30 knots, which is essentially the Met Office saying: “We don’t have much of a clue.” As it was, the breeze built steadily and there were some brutal gusts. The boat proved easy to handle under both power and sail. The keel is push button and the rudders are simply raised and lowered by hand and were easy to access. Under sail she proved very well behaved and, as always, a self-tacker really removes any drama from basic manoeuvres. This is a small, light boat with tiller steering and a decent sail area so the overall feel was very dinghy-like. By that I mean fast, fun and responsive. You could throw the boat around and she took it very well. At the same time, there was a bit of power there. At times we were clearly overcanvassed due to the massive gusts, but she was pretty stiff and had loads of grip. Basically, she was a lot of fun and it was clear that it would not take much to get her planing under asymmetric.

250 foot yacht

I guess the pièce de résistance was under power though. With the engine dropped down through a sliding hatch, keel mostly (but not fully) raised, rudders halfway up and the trim tabs adjusted, she was soon scooting back towards Cardigan at 14.5kt. At this point we inadvertently illustrated the merits of a swing keel by straying over some shallow water and hitting a sand bank at 13kt. The keel dutifully bounced up and we ended up just looking surprised rather than foolish. Other than that, she was supremely well behaved under power.

The Coast is a lot of fun – a boat that in some respects rips up the rulebook and just looks at what you actually want from a daysailer. To have the ability to motor at 15kt is never a drawback to my mind, for all that it is unconventional.

Elsewhere, the boat is crammed with clever touches and it sails as you’d expect a Swallow Yachts product should – very well. Her looks are a total departure from the early Swallow models, which had more than a hint of the classic yacht to them. These are definitely contemporary, so if you don’t mind a bit of brutal modernism, you’ll be fine. The payoff is a practical boat that sails very well.

How much does it cost to own a yacht?

By Rob Bowman | Posted On Oct 28, 2019 Updated On Apr 16, 2024

Since we opened our doors in 2002, United Yacht Sales has worked with thousands of boaters who hold aspirations of owning a yacht. A yacht can mean different things to different people, especially when discussing the difference between intended use such as fishing, day boating, entertaining, and long-distance cruising. Just as there are many applications for how you plan to use your boat, there are also many boat builders working to design the perfect yacht to meet a specific niche in the marketplace. With nearly 1,000 transactions completed each year, United brokers commonly hear the same questions asked as new boaters begin their research into finding the perfect vessel. The yacht's purchase cost isn't the only expense though and other factors need to be considered.

What does it cost to own a yacht? "The cost of ownership for a 60-foot, $1 million yacht is going to be about 10% of its value, or $100,000 per year if it's over ten years old," said Peter Schmidt , Founder of United Yacht Sales. "You can pretty well estimate that for a later model boat of this size, in the Florida market, your general costs are going to be in that range. This would include things like routine maintenance, repairs, dockage, additional supplies, and the cost of either a professional captain or a yacht manager. If it's a newer boat, the annual costs will be less, however preventative maintenance is still very important."

If you're new to boating and this is your first yacht purchase, it makes sense to discuss these questions with your yacht broker:

  • Where do you plan to keep your yacht?
  • Are you going to run the boat yourself or will you need a captain?

How much does it cost to maintain a yacht?

  • How much does it cost to fuel your yacht?
  • Is buying a yacht a good investment?

The answers to these questions vary with many factors influencing the cost of each. Simply the location of where you plan to keep and use your yacht can raise or lower your monthly spend to keep your boat maintained in the best possible condition.

How much does it cost to store a yacht at a marina?

One of the first and most important questions to answer before you buy a yacht revolves around storage. If you own a water-front home with a dock big enough to safely store your yacht, the savings are substantial. However, if you plan on keeping your vessel at a marina, those costs need to be included in your annual budget. United Yacht broker Christopher Cooke  owns his own yacht management company and often helps his clients find a space at a marina. "The cost of keeping your yacht at a marina really varies by location," said Chris. "You are charged per foot, but that cost can change not only depending on what county you're in, but also how many amenities are at the marina."

"In Florida, the marinas in Martin County for example, can be half the cost of Miami-Dade," continued Christopher. "It really all depends on your boating plans, where you live, and how far you're willing to travel to be at your boat."

Sailfish Marina of Stuart is a popular yacht storage facility in Martin county that is the closest marina to the St. Lucie Inlet also with accommodations for a 60-foot and over boat. There is a fuel dock at the marina as well as a tackle shop.  If you purchase a slip for a full year on an annual contract, the cost is $20-$22 per foot of your "Length Overall" . This is important, because while some boats might be called a "60", they may very well be 62 feet in length and cost more. Additionally, if you want electricity, water, and waste removal, it can cost you an extra $175 per month for one 50amp line.

Just 40 miles to the south, in the heart of Palm Beach County, sits Palm Harbor Marina. With over 200 slips, some of which can accommodate a 250-foot superyacht and state-of-the-art Marinetek concrete floating docks, the cost is much higher. Using the same example of a 60-foot cruising yacht, the cost of storage is approximately $5,760 per month, along with a $500 per month utilities fee. "With a place like Palm Harbor Marina, boaters are paying for the amenities and the location," continued Chris. Palm Harbor Marina features a yacht club with a hospitality bar and media center, a complete fitness center, game room, deli, concierge, as well as being right next to the best restaurants and nightlife in Palm Beach.

(Seen below: A yacht is welcomed by the professional staff that includes golf cart service. Photo credit: Palm Harbor Marina website.)

cost of storing a yacht at a marina

"For a yacht that's 60-feet, later model year, and with average usage, you can expect to pay $60,000 per year in preventative maintenance costs ," said Cooke. "And by average use I mean 150-200 hours per year. But that's assuming nothing goes wrong and has to be replaced. Typically you're looking at $4 per foot to have someone dive it, another $4 per foot to have it washed regularly, and then another $1,000 or so to go through and do a full systems check. These costs can definitely vary though depending on the boat and location. Because of inflation with the price of materials and labor, these costs have really gone up over the last 2 years."

The best advice Christopher has for boat owners of this size is to hire a yacht management company. Yacht Management companies often oversee anywhere from 10 to 50 boats at any one time, Christopher currently has 30. The yacht manager will ensure the boat is clean, all systems checked like transmission and generators, the running gear checked, oil changes are done, and that nothing is starting to fail. Preventative maintenance can save thousands of dollars in the long run of yacht ownership and will end up paying for itself. Many yacht owners have work or other hobbies that take their time away from being able to devote to the proper maintaining of their vessel. The result can be negligence in the upkeep of the boat, causing systems to fail, and end in more costly repair bills. If you're going to spend the money on a nice yacht, a yacht management company is a smart choice.

How much does it cost to insure a yacht?

Joshua Giordano of Global Marine Insurance Agency is no stranger to insuring boats from New York to Florida. In fact, In fact, with over 20 years in the marine industry Joshua offers a unique understanding of marine insurance as it pertains to personal watercraft, boats, and yachts. This knowledge and experience allows him to find the best boat & yacht insurance at the best price.

"We get asked all of the time how much it costs to insure a yacht and the answer is it really depends on where you live and keep the yacht," says Joshua. "For a 60-foot yacht in the Northeast, you're looking at between $6,000 and $8,000 per year for insurance. Come down to Florida and that same boat is going to be $10,000 to $12,000 to insure assuming it's for private use only. If you plan to put your vessel into a yacht charter program in Florida, then costs go up $14,000 per year."

(Seen below: A 62' Azimut Yacht in Florida, if kept at a marina, will likely cost about $10,000 per year in insurance.)

How much does it cost to fill a yacht with fuel?

Trying to budget your annual expense for fuel can be difficult. Not only do some yachts have larger fuel capacities, but their fuel burn and range can also vary. This also then dependent upon how much you use your boat and how hard you will be running the engines. Cruising at lower rpm's at around an 8-10 knot speed can mean better fuel efficiency with longer running times between trips to get more fuel.

Assuming your 60-foot yacht has a fuel capacity 1,200 gallons and with an average fuel price of $5.50, and it will cost $6,600 to fill up. For new boaters, it's really difficult to gauge how much fuel you might use in a year and only personal experience and time on the water can help narrow down that annual cost.

Fuel costs per location also can change depending on where you are boating. The Waterway Guide offers up-to-date pricing on fuel at major marinas through the United States. For example, diesel fuel in Jacksonville, Florida is currently ranging from $5.40 to $5.90 depending on which marina you stop at. In comparison, stopping for diesel in the Florida Keys will start at $4.90 and could be as high as $5.30 per gallon.

Can you finance a yacht?

Finacing a yacht is very common," says Shana White with OceanPoint Marine Lending. "There are many attractive programs out there that can be tailored to fit the bueyer's needs. The boat loan approval process usually takes between 24 and 48 hours to receive an answer." Things like your income-to-debt ratio, credit score, credit history, and asset verification all go into whether or not a bank will loan you the money for a yacht. A favorable rate for a yacht loan could be 4% in the current market with other possible discounts available. Check out our Boat Loan FAQ's page for more information.

How Much Should I Pay For A Yacht?

Owning a yacht is an investment in yourself, not a financial one. Boats depreciate in value, they cost money to maintain, and you will almost never sell it for more than what you paid for it. The memories you create with your friends and family on a yacht, however, are worth more than words can describe.  Peter Schmidt talks about why to own a yacht after more than 40 years in the business, "Owning a yacht is a good thing, one of the joys of life. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. A yacht allows you to make memories you never dreamed possible!" Peter is also a current boat owner and has owned several throughout his life. His kids now own their boats and are teaching Peter's grandchildren the joys of being on the water. "I love boating and my kids love boating. It gets in your blood and gets passed down through the generations. There simply is no greater pastime than owning a boat. Yes, there are some inconveniences along the way with repairs, but the good far outweighs any temporary inconveniences."

Peter suggests "speaking to a knowledgeable, professional, and experienced yacht broker near you about the costs of yacht ownership. If you don't have a relationship currently with a United Yacht broker, please give our main office a call at (772) 463-3131 and we will connect you with the best broker to service you based on your location and boating needs.

SKYFALL is currently for sale for an asking price of $29.5m

Superyacht SKYFALL is as iconic as the James Bond movie it shares its name with. Owned by an American real estate developer, the 190-foot motor yacht features a distinctive silhouette and a boatload of stand-out amenities including a panoramic sky lounge, a split-level owner’s cabin and a helipad that converts into a basketball court. As well as being highly appealing to owners, she’s a successful charter yacht that’s renowned for her ability to entertain.

SKYFALL was built by American luxury motor yacht builder Trinity Yachts in 2010 for the shipyard’s owner. “SKYFALL is the most exquisite superyacht ever delivered by Trinity Yachts and is a shining example of American craftsmanship and pride,” says Frank Grzeszczak Sr of FGI Yacht Group. “In a market where yachts of her size are rarely this versatile, SKYFALL stands out as a unique offering. With a Bahamas-friendly draft, aluminum construction, speeds exceeding 20 knots, a flexible seven-cabin layout—including a bi-level primary suite—and expansive lounges, SKYFALL sets herself apart from others in her class.”

The current owner bought her in 2018 from an American automobile tycoon and completed a full refit in 2020, including elegant, timeless interiors by designers Patrick Knowles and Even Marshall. Now, as the owner builds a new, larger, 270-foot yacht with an Italian shipyard, they’ve reluctantly put SKYFALL up for sale.

As SKYFALL enters the market with FGI , the owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, gives Forbes an exclusive look at life onboard the yacht and reveals his favorite experiences and spaces, as well as his top tips for superyacht ownership.

What initially captivated you about SKYFALL?

Owner: SKYFALL is an iconic yacht. She really has the best of all worlds. She has semi displacement which means she is fast and efficient. She also has a shallow draft that allows her to get into anchorages or ports that other similar sized boats can’t even try to get into. In the Bahamas, for example, it is typical for SKYFALL to be anchored close to shore while other 60-meter (190-foot) boats are a mile or more offshore.

What are your favourite memories onboard SKYFALL?

We have had a lot of fun with family and friends on SKYFALL. The list of great memories onboard is quite long. The bridge deck outdoor dining table is where we always try to have meals unless the weather is very bad. We have had a lot of great discussions with family and friends around that table that will last a lifetime. We also like that the sundeck that has two hot tubs with plenty of space, which is where we have pre-dinner canapes every night while we watch the sun set wherever we might be.

One thing that often grabs people’s attention is the basketball goal that also is a helideck on the sundeck. We have had a lot of competitive games of basketball on sundeck, sometimes with a number of spectators watching from afar.

The top deck of SKYFALL features a basketball court, helipad, pool, hot tub and dining area

What is your favourite space onboard?

The sky lounge is group favorite. It has twin 80-inch TVs, so there isn’t a bad place in the sky lounge to view a game.

Please talk us through the owner’s cabin and how you designed it to suit your lifestyle.

The owner’s cabin on SKYFALL is exactly what we wanted on a boat. The master bed faces the bow with large windows which means we get to wake up every morning to an amazing view. The sitting area is perfect for getting a break from guests when we just need some time to ourselves. The suite also has ‘His and Hers’ separate baths and closets, which is a requirement for us. My wife and I always say that the key to a long and happy marriage is separate bathrooms and closets.

The office in the master suite is a welcome retreat for me so I can get work done privately without being disturbed, and more importantly, without waking up my wife.

Where are your favourite places to visit around the world?

It has always been non-negotiable for our family that we spend New Year’s together in Saint Bart’s on the boat. In early spring, she spends a few weeks in the Bahamas, and then typically we send her over to the Med for the summer season. She then comes back for a quick yard period in the fall, does the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, and then makes her way back to the Caribbean.

What makes SKYFALL such a successful charter yacht?

The feedback from charter guests has been that this is a great multi-generational boat. We have all the fun toys for kids, and lots of relaxing spaces for adults. Three generations in a family can travel together and have a great trip for different reasons. With the multitude of large beds, it is also a great boat for several couples to travel together.

Interiors are elegant and timeless

What first inspired you to become a yacht owner?

Our family had been chartering yachts for about 12 years. More and more we found ourselves wanting to spend time on the water. We had been loosely talking about buying a yacht when we started attending the annual Fort Lauderdale Boat Show. I’m not an impulse buyer, but when we found a boat that we thought would work for our lifestyle, we knew (or rather, my wife knew) that was the boat for us.

What does yacht ownership give you that villa or a hotel ownership couldn’t?

We often talk about how owning a yacht allows you to basically have a home nearly anywhere in the world. We like new places, and we like to explore, but we like to have a familiar home base to come back to at the end of a long day. A yacht gives you the advantage of being in the Med in the summer and the Caribbean in the winter sleeping in the same bed every night.

Guests can enjoy indoor and outdoor dining areas

Why have you decided to put SKYFALL on the sales market – and why now?

We are building a new boat, and it is time to let this one go. We are sad to part with her, but we hope she will find a new family that will create many new memories on her as we have.

What would be your biggest piece of advice to the next owner of SKYFALL?

Have fun with her. That’s what she is for. This boat loves to be used so if you have a destination in mind, she’s ready to go.

The decks have plenty of space for entertainment and relaxation

Want to be the new owner of SKYFALL? Here’s how

SKYFALL is currently for sale for an asking price of $29,500,000. Interested parties should contact the broker, Frank Grzeszczak Sr, Founder & President at FGI Yacht Group , who says: “Simply put, SKYFALL is the finest American superyacht available today. The price has recently been adjusted to $29,500,000, reflecting the seller's commitment to securing a fair price for this extraordinary vessel.”
