Should I Buy an F27 Trimaran?

Telemark Sailor

I am going to buy a sailboat next summer for cruising quick overnights/weekends & daysailing in Long Island Sound. I am currently enthralled with getting a Corsair F27 trimaran. http://www.multihull-maven.com/Boats/Corsair_F-27 The ability to get across the sound in a half day is particularly appealing (as well as the fun of going fast- I am a former Hobie 16 sailor). I can see no downside to a tri besides the potential to capsize vs a keelboat, which I feel comfortable I can avoid. I'm fine with a shorter/smaller cabin. Any downsides I might be missing?

Gunni

The surface state of the sound will determine how much of that speed capability you can actually use. That is a very powerfully canvased boat, and a wet ride, especially in big chop. They are huge fun to sail, and Ian Farrier's folding ama design is genius. It is a great trailer sailor, but pretty spartan by my standards.

Love Them A friend down here in florida has one that he seems to still use for weekend over nighters and not a younger guy and retired and 60 which enjoys very much and hope to go sailing on it soon. i also had hobie 16 up when in NY and saw many times those trimaran's going from Ct. to Block Island. I am sure you can add things for over over nighters and weekends,we are retired here our 60 ish and enjoy our comforts when cruising here 2 or 3 weeks at a time. Nick

Would you keep it in the water? My main worry would be how hard/ how long it would take to rig one of these if you are going to trailer sail it. I used to have a Mac 26, and it almost always took me an hour to get it fully ready to go. A lot of people say it should be a lot faster than 1 hour, but that's about what it always took to go from ready for the highway to ready for the water. These trimarans look a decent bit more complicated. They also look like a lot of fun.

Caboteur

It all depends on what you're looking for... I rented an F27 once to go from LA to Catalina. Fast and furious, I was with a teen-aged daughter; we loved the boat and the trip. You can overnight in spartan comfort: the boat will remain fast and fun and wet, no matter what. You won't be buying comfort no matter what you do to make it more sedate! Reefing for comfort would be a sin on this boat. I owned a Tornado for about fifteen years, when I gave it away I (we) wanted comfort; if you are younger and do not want to go the long-term cruising route this might be the perfect boat. Good luck & have fun. Pierre

I met a very nice fellow last summer that crossed the atlantic in his f31 with his wife, he took me out for a ride with the boat and the speed impressed me , very fast boat

It is a very light boat and doesn't need much sail once the wind builds. The boat accelerates much more quickly than a mono, or even your average cruise cat so you need to be keenly aware of sails and trim.

Johnb

That boat is one heck of a performer. Multi hulls are not supposed to go well up wind but with a friend sailing close hauled in the Oakland Estuary we were dusting mono hulls that were motoring. The accommodations are also surprisingly good for what it is. The ability to trailer and it's skinny water capability are a massive attraction. Just be warned though, some time back on the bay one was capsized when the downwind amah was hit by a large wake and submarined, it is nowhere near as forgiving as a big ole monohull and proper caution is needed. For what it is good for it is a great boat.

Tom J

This sounds like the boat for you. The beauty of having a cabin is that guests (or the Admiral) can seek shelter if they don't want to get wet. Heeling on a mono is usually what upsets most newbies to sailing, so at least that isn't as much of an issue on the tri. It's probably the speed that will concern most guests. My friend's wife was scared ****less on our buddy"s F-24, but my wife loved it. But then, my wife likes to drive motorcycles, fast. Just be picky about who goes with you, but get out there and have fun.

A great go fast cruiser The only caution is that you have to load it light to keep it fast. It's surprising how much you will want to load for just an overnight! On the other hand, this is a great cruiser for inland archipelagos. The Thousand Islands are not far away. Short fetches between the islands keep the waves down. And there are hundreds of places to anchor - all kinds of destinations. I met a couple cruising the North Channel of Lake Huron for a couple of weeks in one.

Joe said: Yes, don't wait till summer.... get it asap so you can have it ready for summer... Those Corsairs are very cool sailboats... you'll be the envy of every sailor on the sound when you whiz past them with the windward ama skimming over the wavelets. Click to expand

Human Evolutionary Biology

Program finder image

Undergraduate Program

The concentration in Human Evolutionary Biology (HEB) provides students with the skills and knowledge they need to investigate and answer questions about who we are, how we got here, and what makes us unique. Research in human evolutionary biology is increasingly influencing medical science, economics, linguistics, psychology, and political science, and HEB concentrators learn how to use an evolutionary perspective to help solve real world problems.

Harvard’s Department of Human Evolutionary Biology is one of the world’s leading programs to study the fundamental question “How did evolution make humans the way they are?” Our program evolved from the subfield of biological anthropology (sometimes called evolutionary anthropology), but we are more than that because we address issues in human evolutionary biology by bringing together and integrating scholars and students engaged in many fields of research relevant to our core question including: anatomy and physiology of primates and humans; primate and human behavior and ecology; molecular, developmental, and population genetics and genomics; and paleontology and the physical record of primate and hominin evolution.

  • PhD Program in Anthropology and Middle Eastern Studies

Admissions to the PhD in Anthropology and MES has been paused and will not be accepting applications for fall 2024.

The joint program in Anthropology and Middle Eastern Studies is designed for students interested in enriching their program of study for the PhD in Anthropology with firsthand knowledge about the Middle East based on literacy in its languages and an understanding of its cultural traditions. As a student in an interdisciplinary program you are a full member of the Department of Anthropology cohort, but also have an intellectual home at CMES and access to CMES faculty, facilities, and resources.

Students in the joint PhD Program in Anthropology and Middle Eastern Studies fulfill all the  requirements for the PhD in Social Anthropology  in addition to the language and area studies requirements established by the Committee on Middle Eastern Studies.

Language Requirements

Each student must demonstrate a reading knowledge of one of the following European languages: German, French, Italian, or Russian. This requirement may be fulfilled either by a departmental examination or by satisfactory completion of two years of language study. The student must also demonstrate a thorough knowledge of a modern Middle Eastern language: Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, or Turkish. Depending on the student’s specialization, another Middle Eastern or Islamic language (e.g., Kurdish, Urdu) may be substituted with the approval of the Committee on Joint PhD Programs. The expectation is that the student learn the languages necessary to teach and work in his or her chosen field.

Program of Study in Anthropology and MES

The graduate program in social anthropology and Middle Eastern Studies requires a minimum of sixteen half-courses, three of which are in Middle Eastern history, economics, religion, or political science, and twelve of which are in anthropology. The twelve required anthropology half-courses include the proseminar “History and Theory of Social Anthropology” (2650a and b); a half-course on the ethnography of one’s area of specialization is recommended but not required. A half-course in archaeology is recommended but not required. First-year students must attain at least a B+ in each half of the proseminar.

A list of current Middle East–related courses is available on this site at the beginning of each semester ; the Anthropology Department courses are available at my.harvard.edu .

Social anthropology PhD candidates are required to take written and oral examinations toward the end of their third term of study. Candidates must pass these examinations before they may continue their PhD work. More details are available in the Department of Anthropology’s  Program Guidelines for students .

  • Dissertation

The dissertation prospectus must be read and approved by a committee of three faculty members no later than the end of the third year. The dissertation will normally be based on fieldwork conducted in the Middle East, or in other areas of the world with close cultural ties to the region, and should demonstrate the student’s ability to use source material in one or more relevant Middle Eastern languages. Satisfactory progress of PhD candidates in the writing stage is determined on the basis of the writing schedule the student arranges with his or her advisor.

Timeline for Student Progress and Degree Completion

  • Coursework: One to three years.
  • Examinations: General exams must be passed by the end of the second year of study.
  • Dissertation Prospectus: Must be approved by the end of the third year.
  • Dissertation Defense and Approval: The candidate’s dissertation committee decides when the dissertation is ready for defense. The doctorate is awarded when the candidate passes a defense of the dissertation.
  • Graduation: The program is ideally completed in six years.

For more details on these guidelines, see the Middle Eastern Studies section  of the Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (Harvard Griffin GSAS) Policies site and the Department of Anthropology’s guidelines for PhD students in social anthropology . On Campus Experience

Choose between the accelerated or standard on-campus experience.

Learn and network in-person with your classmates.

Nearly all courses can be taken online, but the degree requires an in-person experience here at Harvard University where you enroll in Engaging in Scholarly Conversation (ESC).

Join your fellow degree candidates for this interactive course that highlights the importance of true graduate-level analysis by training you in the skills of critically engaging the scholarly literature in your field of study.

Choose between two on-campus experience options:

  • Accelerated on-campus option: ESC is offered in two, 2-credit Active Learning Weekends. We strongly advise you complete the two weekends in the same academic year with same instructor (part one in fall and part two in spring).
  • Standard on-campus option: ESC is offered in one 3-week Harvard Summer School session. This option is ideal for those who want a more traditional on-campus experience. HSS offers, for an additional fee, housing, meal plans, and a prolonged on-campus experience here at Harvard University. Learn more about campus life at Harvard .

You register for ESC after completing the proseminar with a grade of B or higher and prior to either the Crafting the Thesis Proposal tutorial or the precapstone to support your final research project. Ordinarily, students wait until they are officially admitted before enrolling in this requirement, as it does not count as one of the three, 4-credit courses required for admission.

You have two attempts to earn the required grade of B- or higher in ESC. A withdrawal grade (WD) counts as an attempt.

Whether working on a paper at one of the libraries or shopping at the Harvard Coop, I always felt like I belonged.

On attending Engaging in Scholarly Conversation in the active learning weekend format.

These prerequisite courses are investments in your studies and help ensure success in the program. They count toward your degree once you’re admitted; they are not additional courses.

  • Before registering, you’ll need to pass our online test of critical reading and writing skills or earn a B or higher in EXPO 42b Writing in the Social Sciences.
  • You have 2 attempts to earn the minimum grade of B in the proseminar (a withdrawal grade counts as an attempt). The proseminar cannot be more than 2 years old at the time of application.
  • 1 Anthropology course
  • 1 Anthropology course or elective (e.g., EXPO 42b)

While the three courses don’t need to be taken in a particular order or in the same semester, we highly recommend that you start with the proseminar (or the prerequisite EXPO 42b). All three courses must be completed with a grade of B or higher, without letting your overall Harvard cumulative GPA dip below 3.0.

Applying to the Degree Program View More

During the semester of your third degree course, submit the official application to the program.

Don’t delay! You must prioritize the three degree courses for admission and apply before completing subsequent courses. By doing so, you’ll:

  • Avoid the loss of credit due to expired course work or changes to admission and degree requirements.
  • Ensure your enrollment in critical and timely degree-candidate-only courses.
  • Avoid the delayed application fee.
  • Gain access to exclusive benefits.

Eligible students who submit a complete and timely application will have 9 more courses after admission to earn the degree. Applicants can register for courses in the upcoming semester before they receive their grades and while they await their admission decision.

The Office of Predegree Advising & Admissions makes all final determinations about program eligibility.

Search and Register for Courses

The Division of Continuing Education (DCE) offers degree courses all year round to accelerate degree completion.

  • You can study in fall, January, and spring terms through Harvard Extension School (HES) and during the summer through Harvard Summer School (HSS).
  • You can enroll full or part time. After qualifying for admission, many of our degree candidates study part time, taking 2 courses per semester (fall/spring) and 1 in the January and summer sessions.
  • Most fall and spring courses meet once a week for two hours, while January and summer courses meet more frequently in a condensed format.

To Complete Your Degree

Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Complete your courses in five years.

Required GPA, Withdrawal Grades, and Repeat Courses View More

GPA. You need to earn a B or higher in each of the three degree courses required for admission and a B– or higher in each of the subsequent courses. In addition, your cumulative GPA cannot dip below 3.0.

Withdrawal Grades. You are allowed to receive two withdrawal (WD) grades without them affecting your GPA. Any additional WD grades count as zero in your cumulative GPA. See Academic Standing .

Repeat Courses. We advise you to review the ALM program’s strict policies about repeating courses . Generally speaking, you may not repeat a course to improve your GPA or to fulfill a degree requirement (if the minimum grade was not initially achieved). Nor can you repeat a course for graduate credit that you’ve previously completed at Harvard Extension School or Harvard Summer School at the undergraduate level.

Courses Expire: Finish Your Coursework in Under Five Years View More

Courses over five years old at the point of admission will not count toward the degree. As stated above, the proseminar cannot be more than two years old at the time of application.

Further, you have five years to complete your degree requirements. The five-year timeline begins at the end of the term in which you complete any three degree-applicable courses, regardless of whether or not you have been admitted to a degree program.

Potential degree candidates must plan accordingly and submit their applications to comply with the five-year course expiration policy or they risk losing degree credit for completed course work. Additionally, admission eligibility will be jeopardized if, at the point of application to the program, the five-year degree completion policy cannot be satisfied (i.e., too many courses to complete in the time remaining).

Design Anthropology: Objects, Landscapes, Cities (with FAS)

In recent years, there has been a movement in anthropology toward a focus on objects, while design and planning have been moving toward the understanding of objects as part of a greater social, political, and cultural milieu. This seminar explores their common ethnographic ground. The course is about both the anthropology of design, and the design of anthropology.

For designers, the goals will be to learn thick ethnographic observation and description; applying theoretical concepts in making connections between ethnographic data; and moving from ethnography to design proposals. Anthropologists will be challenged to think about different forms of fieldwork by collaborating with non-anthropologists and working toward a collective ethnography; using visual information to represent ethnographic information and insights; and applying anthropological skills to the study of objects, materiality, and design processes.

The seminars will be filled with different components and tasks, including lectures and synopses of the weekly topic, fieldwork-based exercises, learning how to take notes or record data using different media, analyzing ethnographic data, sharing thinking on individual projects, and discussing assigned readings.

Students will be expected to engage in two large projects over the course of the semester. The first is fieldwork centered on the border region between Ireland and Northern Ireland, March 15–24, with pairs of students carrying out an ethnography of specific communities. Class periods leading up to that fieldwork will prepare students—methodologically, ethnographically, and theoretically—for this exercise.

After fieldwork, students will analyze their findings in relation to certain conceptual themes that drive much of design anthropology but also bear on the specific nature of design problems and opportunities in Ireland and Northern Ireland. This will prepare students to complete the second large project of the course: a term essay or design proposal capturing their thinking on design anthropology and fieldwork in Ireland/Northern Ireland.

This course will include a trip to Derry-Londonderry, Northern Ireland and County Donegal in the Republic of Ireland for 16 students, 8 from the GSD and 8 from FAS. Travel will take place on March 15–24. All students who travel in this course will be term billed $300. The 8 GSD students will be selected via the limited enrollment course lottery. Students may enroll in only one traveling course or studio in a given term, and are responsible for the cost of all meals and incidentals related to the trip, including visas and any change fees related to modifications to the set flight itinerary.

This course will meet in Gund Hall 109 for the first class. After that the course will meet in Tozzer room 203.

A bridge from undergraduate to graduate studies

Post-baccalaureate program help students transition to the next academic level.

Five SEAS post-baccalaureate students with staff members Edward Alexander, Kathryn Hollar and Paula Nicole Booke

Five SEAS post-baccalaureate students with staff members Edward Alexander, Kathryn Hollar and Paula Nicole Booke

The graduate and undergraduate student experience isn’t the same. Undergraduates spend the majority of their four years in classrooms. But for graduate students — especially those pursuing PhDs in engineering and applied sciences — most of the work is in the lab.

The focus on laboratory research can make pursuing advanced degrees feel daunting for some students.

“I’d always had a love for math, science and experimentation, but when COVID happened, they shut down the school, so I wasn’t able to do any hands-on experiments, “ said Shekinah Newson.

After graduating in 2021, Newson joined the inaugural cohort of post-baccalaureate students at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS). The post-baccalaureate program , offered through the SEAS Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging and Office of Education Outreach and Community Programs, acts as a bridge from undergraduate to graduate school. The program allows students to gain laboratory research experience with SEAS faculty, while continuing to take courses that will prepare them for their graduate studies.

Post-baccalaureate students typically stay for 1-2 years, but have the option to stay on for a third.  So far six students have completed the program, five of whom have gone onto graduate school.

“I’m super glad I did it, because now I’ve honed in the research skills that I started to develop as an undergraduate,” said Maggie Vallejo, a former environmental science and engineering undergraduate concentrator at SEAS. “I definitely think more like a researcher, and I better understand that research isn’t linear.”

Vallejo’s undergraduate advisor was Jim Anderson, Philip S. Weld Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry, and she returned to the Anderson Research Group for her post-baccalaureate studies. Her senior capstone project involved predicting power losses in solar cells aboard stratospheric aircraft, and as a post-baccalaureate researcher, she transitioned to analyzing lithium-ion battery cell performance.

Harvard SEAS post-baccalaureate student Maggie Vallejo in the lab of Jim Anderson

Post-baccalaureate student Maggie Vallejo in the lab of Jim Anderson, Philip S. Weld Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry

“During the application process, I made sure Professor Anderson was OK with me just staying in his lab,” she said. “I was interested in the work I was already doing, and I knew the people in the lab, so I figured why not just stay.”

Vallejo spent both years of her program with the same professor, but that isn’t required. The program is meant to help students focus their academic goals, and sometimes that focus clarifies that the lab a student started in isn’t exactly what they want moving forward. Dawn Bordenave, another member of the inaugural cohort, spent each of her first two years in different labs before settling into the lab of Joanna Aizenberg, Amy Smith Berylson Professor of Materials Science and Professor of Chemistry & Chemical Biology.

Bordenave is part of Aizenberg’s research into the improvement of ventricular catheter design for treatment of hydrocephalus, a potentially deadly disorder in which fluid builds up in the cavities deep within the human brain. Her specific part of the project is to develop low-cost methods of constructing the catheter in the lab, making it much easier to physically test new designs before beginning clinical trials.

“After spending time in other labs, I realized that I wanted to do something different that was a little closer to my goal of designing medical devices,” Bordenave said. “The program is very flexible. If the research, lab or mentor you start off with isn’t close to what you want and you want to change, that’s definitely an option. The Aizenberg Lab was the best fit for me.”

Newson, who completed the program last month, worked in the Harvard Biodesign Lab, led by Conor Walsh, Paul A. Maeder Professor of Engineering and Applied Sciences, as well as the lab of Michael Brenner, Michael F. Cronin Professor of Applied Mathematics and Applied Physics and Professor of Physics. With Walsh, she worked on the soft robotics toolkit, an educational package for teaching robotics to younger students. With Brenner, she helped developed a non-invasive method to measure range of motion

“This innovative educational resource empowers people to learn about robotics through engaging, hands-on activities,” Newson said. “To be able to build a toolkit that allows a child to both play and learn at the same time is amazing. I wish I had something like that when I was growing up.”

Newson, Bordenave and Vallejo will all be leaving SEAS for graduate programs at other universities. Newson will pursue a master’s degree in robotics at Boston University, and Bordenave and Vallejo are both heading to Cornell University: Bordenave for a master’s degree in biomedical engineering, Vallejo for an M.S./Ph.D. program in civil and environmental engineering.

“It was fantastic having Shekinah as part of our research group,” Walsh said. “She got involved in a number of projects, including one focused on using soft robotics in education and STEM outreach. It is very exciting that she will be going on to do an MS in robotics at BU as a next step. Her passion for learning and growing her engineering skill set has been a great example for us all.”

Eva Langenbrunner joined the program last fall and will be back to work in the Harvard Microrobotics Lab, led by Robert Wood, Harry Lewis and Marlyn McGrath Professor of Engineering and Applied Sciences. She’s developing materials that can fold into origami-like shapes using soft robotic actuators.

“Post-baccalaureates programs are really great because they teach you how to be a successful grad student,” she said. “The program goes over how to properly write research articles, which is something no one in undergrad teaches you how to do, but then you get to grad school and they expect you to know it. The biggest thing I learned here was how to structure a research project from beginning to end.”

Harvard SEAS post-baccalaureate student Katie Barajas working in the lab of professor Marko Lončar

Post-baccalaureate student Katie Barajas working in the lab of Marko Lončar, Tiantsai Lin Professor of Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics at SEAS

Langenbrunner will be joined by new post-baccalaureate Jonathan Chinana, a Navajo Technical University (NTU) graduate who first came to SEAS for the Research Experience for Undergraduates program in the summer of 2022 . Michael Nelwood, another NTU graduate, finished his post-baccalaureate studies in the lab of Jennifer Lewis, Hansjörg Wyss Professor of Biologically Inspired Engineering. He’s now working as a lab tech in the Lewis Lab.

Katie Barajas has spent the last two years with the Harvard Quantum Initiative, working in the lab of Marko Lončar, Tiantsai Lin Professor of Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics. She’ll continue with the Lončar Group as an applied physics Ph.D. student this fall. Her research focuses on the fabrication of nanostructures in specially lab-grown diamonds. These diamonds have a silicon atom implanted in place of two carbon atoms. These defects are called “silicon vacancy centers,” and they could potentially be used to transmit information in a quantum computer.

“It wasn’t until late in my undergrad career that I learned about the field of quantum optics. If I wanted to pursue a degree in that field, I needed more research experience,” she said. “That persuaded me to do the post-baccalaureate program. I’m in a much better place than when I was coming out of undergrad. This program has given me the confidence to say I can be a scientist and pursue scientific research, and that’s a testament to the people I’ve worked with.”

Paris hilton defends not putting life jacket on 1-year-old son phoenix while out at sea: ‘it’s a big boat’.

Paris Hilton hit back at mom-shamers who criticized her for allowing her 1-year-old son, Phoenix, to walk around on a boat without wearing a life jacket.

The “This Is Paris” star, 43, posted a sweet TikTok video Wednesday of her and husband Carter Reum ‘s little boy waddling around aboard a luxury Sunreef catamaran during the family’s summer vacation.

“Watching Phoenix explore the world has been so special to me! I am so grateful to be a #SlivingMom,” Hilton captioned the clip, which she set to Ed Sheeran’s 2014 hit “Photograph.”

While several fans flooded the comments section with supportive messages for the mom of two, who also shares 9-month-old daughter London with Reum, concerned netizens offered up some unsolicited advice.

“Momma, please have him wear a life jacket always on a boat!! Stuff happens. That’s why they’re called accidents. With love,” a social media user commented on the post.

“we are all here for the life vest advice right? Beautiful boat, beautiful life, still safer with the jacket,” a second person wrote.

“Please from one mom to another.. life jacket!” a third commented, with another adding, “My anxiety not seeing him in a life jacket! Can never be too safe on the water!”

Hilton replied to the trolls by explaining that the luxury vessel was very big and her son was nowhere near any danger.

“Hey Mamma’s [sic], thank you for the advice & always caring about my #CutesieCrew,” she wrote in the comments section of her post. “It’s a big boat & my husband and I are following him around everywhere & watching like hawks. My babies are my world.”

Several fans backed up Hilton’s assertion that her son was safe due to the size of the fancy catamaran.

“Guys this boat is way bigger than it seems in this video. A life jacket would be silly, and worst case scenario, they taught him to swim,” a social media user wrote.

“You do you xx pheonix is having a ball xx and 100% safe,” another supporter cheered.

“You are an amazing mama!! Your #cutsiecrew is lucky to have you in their corner,” one person gushed.

Sunreef Yachts is known for its opulent ships and grand boats that feature stylish designs and modern finishes for the wealthy.

While it is unclear which model Hilton and her family used, the company’s website describes its catamarans as being “constructed for enjoying yearlong transoceanic adventures in the deep blue sea.”

The site boasts that each electric vessel is “ultra-silent, vibration-free and fumeless” as well as “easily maneuverable [and] energy efficient … with immense living spaces for dining and lounging.”

The “Cooking with Paris” host and Reum, who tied the knot in November 2021, welcomed Phoenix and London via surrogate on Jan. 16, 2023, and Nov. 11, 2023 , respectively.

This isn’t the first time Hilton has sparked safety concerns for her kids. She was slammed for the way she positioned her kids’s car seats this past May, prompting her to admit that “no one is perfect.”

That same month, the “Stars Are Blind” singer was called out for allowing her son to swim in the water while wearing his life jacket backward and subsequently thanked her followers for informing her of her mistake .

I rented an F27 once to go from LA to Catalina. Fast and furious, I was with a teen-aged daughter; we loved the boat and the trip.
