3 Letho Was Once Almost Killed By A Slyzard

Letho and Geralt met because Letho was on the verge of death after getting hit by the tail end of a Slyzard in the forests of Angren. Geralt ended up saving Letho's life, which is why the other witcher spared Geralt after defeating him in battle in the second game.

1 Letho Was Betrayed By Emperor Emhyr

The whole reason that Letho began slaughtering kings was that he had been promised that upon doing his bidding, Emperor Emhyr would rebuild the School of Viper . Unfortunately, Emhyr not only goes back on his word, ultimately betraying Letho, but he also puts out a bounty on him and forces him to go on the run if he wants to stay alive.

While Letho has been labeled a villain by some, he has mostly just done what he had to do to gain back his school, it may not be dissimilar to what Geralt himself would have done under similar circumstances.

A witcher from the School of the Viper, he’s the main antagonist of Witcher 2 and a minor character in Witcher 3. Letho is a Witcher from the School of the Viper that only appears in the Witcher games. Despite his muscular appearance, Letho is highly cunning and intelligent. Like many Witchers, he was taken as a child, learned the art of monster slaying, and survived the Trial of the Grasses.

He is known as Letho of Gulet, with Gulet being the name of a town near Vengenberg in Aedirn, one of the Northern Kingdoms . So the assumption is that he’s from there, even though it’s never confirmed.

Letho is considered one of the most powerful Witchers in the games and one of the rare few to have defeated Geralt. From childhood until his training as a monster slayer, Letho resided in Gorthur Gvaed , a keep similar to Kaer Morhen. The place housed the School of the Viper and its disciples. When the Usurper ruled Nilfgaard, he demanded that the Witchers of Gorthur Gvaed bend to his will.

The Witchers refused, and the Nilfgaardian Army seized the keep, forcing the remaining few survivors from the School of the Viper to hide. Letho and two fellow Vipers, Serrit and Auckes, were among them.

A Witcher’s Debt

In the year 1270, in a forest in Angren, Letho was facing a Slyzard when the monster hit him with its tail, poisoning the Witcher. Letho was on the brink of death when Geralt appeared, saving his fellow Witcher and earning Letho’s favor in return. At the time, Geralt was chasing the Wild Hunt for the whereabouts of Yennefer. Letho, Serrit, and Auckes share the Wild Hunt’s location and ride with Geralt to face the wraiths.

The party finds the Wild Hunt in Nilfgaard, at the Hanged Man’s Tree. The Witchers stand their ground against the Wild Hunt but reach a stalemate. Finally, Geralt offers a trade, himself for Yennefer, and the Wild Hunt leader, Eredin , accepts.

Determined to repay his debt to Geralt, Letho takes Yennefer under his care. The sorceress, however, is bewildered, amnesic, and causing all sorts of problems for the Vipers. Her lack of discretion attracts the Nilfgardiaan secret police, and Letho’s group is caught and thrown into jail. However, Emhyr van Emreis makes an irresistible offer to Letho: kill Northern kings, and he will restore the Viper School. Letho accepts, setting up the events of the second Witcher game.

Kill as many rulers as we could. Lay the blame on the sorceresses. Breed chaos. Prepare the North, soften it before the invasion. And you know what’s incredible? We could not have imagined more fertile soil. Letho is the central antagonist in Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. The game’s spectacular opening cinematic shows a ship under attack by the burly assassin. The Witcher freezes most of the crew with a Northen Wind bomb and takes advantage of the racket to behead King Demavend III of Aedirn, his first target.

Originally Letho was supposed to kill King Esterad Thyssen of Poviss and Kovir. But after a serendipitous encounter with Síle de Tansarville , one of the founding members of the Lodge of Sorceresses, he decided to alter his plans.

Using the sorceress as a smokescreen to hide his actual employer and motives, Letho agrees to her request to assassinate King Demavend III of Aedirn.

As Letho himself claims: “Initially, she watched my every move. But sooner or later, everyone starts treating me like a big oaf. I mean, I can’t change how I look.” This allowed Letho to continue with his deception.

After killing Demavend, Letho claims he’s trying to hide from the Aedirnian manhunt, and Síle points him to Iorveth , a leader of the Scoia’tael. With the head of the king as a trophy, Letho introduces himself to Iorveth and discloses his king-slaying mission. They form a temporary alliance.

Second Encounter with Geralt

The Kingslayer’s next target was King Foltest of Temeria. However, the monarch had hired Geralt as his bodyguard, who opposed Letho’s first attempt. Aware that Temeria would suffer a siege, Letho infiltrated the castle as a wounded monk and operated in the commotion to assassinate Foltest.

Geralt heard the king and ran to his chambers, only to find the ruler already dead. The White Wolf chases after Letho, and since he’s still suffering from amnesia after the Wild Hunt, he fails to recognize the old acquaintance. Letho manages to escape from Geralt with the help of the Scoia’tael. When the guards find the king, Geralt is the only one in his chambers, becoming the primary suspect and earning himself a prison cell.

After murdering Foltest, Letho tries to convince Ciaran aep Easnillen, one of Iorveth’s lieutenants, to betray his leader. The elf refuses, and Letho kills his entire squadron to hide his traces, leaving Ciaran to be captured by guards from Flotsam. Letho alleges that he betrayed Ioverth because the elf was hard to manipulate, dangerous, and would eventually be able to see through his true intentions.

In the meantime, Geralt is pursuing Letho to clear his name. The White Wolf asks Iorveth for assistance because Letho tried to betray the elf. The Scoia’tael help Geralt, but when they find Letho, the Blue Stripes attack Iorveth. The next scene portrays Letho vs. Geralt, and the Kingslayer overpowers the White Wolf.

Letho spares Geralt, paying him back for the time he saved his life. This fight is significant as one of the only times Geralt is defeated and has led many players to speculate whether Letho is stronger than Geralt.

If we’re talking about pure physical strength, the answer is likely yes, given Letho’s bulky, muscular frame. However, Geralt is likely faster and a better swordsman. Another key factor is that Geralt isn’t well-prepared for the fight and still suffers from amnesia, which means he hasn’t fully regained his skills.

In any case, Letho kidnaps Triss and forces the sorceress to teleport them to Aedirn. Once they arrive in Vergen, Letho lets go of Triss and rendezvous with his fellow Vipers Witchers, Serrit and Auckes, in a hideout.

As his attempt to overpower Iorveth fails, Letho assumes that the Scoia’tael know his treachery. In a preemptive attack, the Viper Witchers massacre the elves under Iorveth.

Letho then charges his fellow Viper school Witchers Serrit and Auckes with assassinating King Henselt of Kaedwen. Meanwhile, he attends the Summit at Loc Muinne , a diplomatic gathering of politicians, sorceresses, and other influential individuals from the Northern Kingdoms and the Nilfgaardian Empire.

Saving Triss or Not: Letho Consequences

• If Geralt decides to rescue Triss at Loc Muinne, Letho doesn’t appear during the A Summit of the Mages cutscene.
• If Geralt doesn’t rescue Triss and helps Roche save Anais, Letho saves the sorceress but is captured by guards. During the Summit of Mages, Letho was present but restrained and snitched on the Lodge of Sorceresses. He claimed that they had conspired with him to assassinate the kings. When the dragon Saesenthessis attacks, Letho manages to escape.

Letho knew Síle would throw him to the wolves, so he sabotages her megascope, turning it into a deadly trap. The player can save Síle or let her die due to Letho’s trickery.

Finally, Letho visits the Temerian Quarter and has a possible final encounter with Geralt, depending on the player’s decisions.

After chugging some vodka and chit-chatting, Geralt regains the rest of his memories. Finally, Letho lays all his cards on the table, divulging his days of caring for Yennefer, his capture by the Imperial secret police, and the mission assigned to him by the Nilfgaardian Emperor.

Spare or Kill Letho

To conclude the dialog, the player must choose to confront Letho or let him go:

• If the player decides to fight Letho, you will ultimately kill him.
• If the player decides to spare Letho, he leaves, and the game ends.

Should you kill Letho in Witcher 2? While the decision is yours, we prefer to keep him alive. This allows you to meet Letho again in Witcher 3 if you start the game by importing your Witcher 2 save or simulate a save and say that you spared him. We also like his character because he fought to protect his school and helped Geralt, Yennefer, and Triss, showing that he does adhere to some code of honor.

Letho has a minor role in Witcher 3, but will only appear based on your choices. If you load a save from Witcher 2 where you killed Letho, the man will not appear.

If you choose to simulate a Witcher 2 save, you will be asked several questions at the start of the game. The most important one is whether you killed or spared Letho. You can only do Letho’s sidequest if you spare him, which is our suggestion.

We don’t recommend skipping the save simulation, as the game will automatically make some decisions, including assuming that you killed Letho.

In case Letho does not appear in Witcher 3, albeit with the right choices, you may have to restart the game.

Letho Witcher 3 Quest: Ghosts of the Past

The most natural way to find Letho is during the sidequest The Fall of the House of Reardon, which takes you to a monster-infested manor. However, you can also stumble upon the location without taking the side quest . Letho’s location in Witcher 3 is in Reardon Manor in central Velen, to the north of the Orphans of Crookback Bog travel post.

Geralt notices that the environment is infested with traps and triggers the sidequest Ghosts of the Past. Geralt encounters Letho on a barn’s second floor, where the latter has already dealt with the monsters.

During their conversation, Letho informs Geralt that after escaping from Loc Muinne, Emhyr betrayed him and sent assassins and mercenaries after Letho. After dispatching some of the said mercenaries with the player’s help, Letho says he will hunt for Louis, who disclosed his location. The game will prompt the player with two choices:

• Love to see that: this one allows us to continue Letho’s sidequest, which we recommend.
• Good luck : you bid farewell to the Viper, and he’s never seen again. You can’t retake the sidequest if you pick this one.

Geralt follows Letho to Louis, who leads them to a bounty hunter called Vester. Next, Letho asks to go alone into the barn where Vester is and orders Geralt not to interfere. Letho attracts Vester and his pals but ends up losing the fight. Geralt runs towards him, and two more choices pop up:

• You’re good as dead: you fight the remaining survivors and kill them, but Letho isn’t too happy about it.
• Don’t want trouble: Geralt doesn’t fight the men but persuades them to take Letho’s medallion to prove his death rather than the head. That’s the best, narratively speaking, choice.

Both alternatives lead to the same outcome. Geralt notices that Letho isn’t dead but forged his death with Zanguebarian venom. However, he needed witnesses to back up his end and finally be rid of his pursuers. If Geralt kills everyone, Letho’s plan goes down in shambles. Still, this doesn’t make a difference, as you will still have two additional options:

• You could go to Kaer Morhen: Geralt invites Letho to the fortress. At first, the Viper is hesitant, but he accepts. Later on, he helps fight the Wild Hunt in the invasion.
• You’ll find a place to hide: and so Letho does. He goes away, never to be seen again.

If Letho goes to Kaer Morhen, there will be a few different dialogues just before the battle against the Wild Hunt. Most Witchers are unhappy with your decision to bring Letho there but brush it aside.

Like many Witcher fans, we appreciate Letho for his depth and complexity. For one, he’s a formidable opponent to Geralt. However, not only his prowess in combat draws players in, but also his captivating backstory and conflicted motivations.

Letho’s loyalty to his fellow witchers and his desire to restore the Viper School gives him a sympathetic angle that encourages players to view him as more than a simple villain.

Throughout the game, Letho challenges Geralt’s perceptions and forces players to confront moral ambiguities. This blend of intrigue, complexity, and combat skill makes Letho an unforgettable character that continues to captivate Witcher fans. We sincerely hope CDPR brings him back somehow, ideally with a game from his perspective.

Who is Eredin? Wild Hunt’s Leader Explained

Letho doesn’t appear in the Witcher books or Netflix show. That’s high praise for the writers at CD Projekt Red, as they managed to create an entirely new character beloved by many. Many players have expressed interest in playing a Witcher game from Letho’s perspective or at least having him appear in future games.

If you want Letho to help during the Battle of Kaer Morhen, you must complete his side quest “Ghosts of the Past” and invite him to the keep.

Letho, the Kingslayer, kills kings as part of his deal with Emhyr var Emreis, the Emperor of Nilfgaard. In return for his services, Emhyr promises to rebuild the School of the Viper, where Letho trained as a witcher. Letho’s primary goal is to secure a future for his fellow Viper witchers by restoring their school.

A fan theory suggests Letho’s muscular build might be due to a genetic mutation affecting myostatin, a protein that inhibits muscle growth. The witcher mutations could have impacted his myostatin levels, causing increased muscle mass. However, this is purely speculative without evidence from the Witcher games or their creators.

Not everyone hates Letho, although some characters, including Eskel and Lambert , have fair reasons to dislike him, like his manipulative actions, role in destabilizing the North and helping Nilfgaard, and regicide.

Letho’s moral alignment is not clear-cut. As a complex character, he can be seen as both a villain and an anti-hero. For example, even though he kills kings and inadvertently frames Geralt, he also has a noble goal (restoring his Witcher school) and helps Geralt and other characters. Players’ opinions on Letho may also vary based on their in-game choices and interpretations of his motivations.

Letho of Gulet , also known as the Kingslayer , is a witcher from the School of the Viper . His closest associates are Auckes and Serrit , also Kingslayers from the same witcher school. For reasons which were initially unknown, he enlisted the help of Iorveth and his Scoia'tael guerrillas to aid him in his plan to kill the kings of the Northern Kingdoms. To back his claim, the man showed Iorveth a head he claims belonged to Demavend , King of Aedirn and Sovereign of the Pontar valley .

In The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings [ | ]

Letho is first seen in the Prologue, where he is revealed to be King Foltest's killer. In a later cutscene, he appears to have just killed King Demavend of Aedirn and comes to Iorveth's hideout seeking Scoia'tael assistance in killing Foltest.

In Chapter I, Letho attempts to betray Iorveth by trying to turn one of his lieutenants against him. However, the elf refuses and Letho kills his entire group, leaving the elf to be captured by Flotsam's guards. Geralt later brings Iorveth to Letho as a ruse to expose the latter's treachery. However, Iorveth and his Scoia'tael are attacked by the Blue Stripes, leaving Geralt and Letho to battle each other. Letho prevails in the battle with Geralt but once the witcher is down, he does not kill him. Letho explains that Geralt once saved his life, so with this small mercy they are now 'even' and leaves to kidnap Triss and force her to teleport them to Aedirn.

Geralt later learns that Letho is a Witcher of the Viper School . Geralt had first encountered him in the forests of Angren on July 25, 1270, while chasing the Wild Hunt in search of Yennefer. He had rescued Letho from death after the latter had been struck by a slyzard 's tail. Letho works with two other witchers of the Viper School, Auckes and Serrit , who are the ones who attempt to assassinate King Henselt in Chapter II.

Geralt meets Letho for the final time in the Epilogue, right after the fight with Saesenthessis. The kingslayer waits for Geralt in the centre of the ruins by the Temerian Quarter. Geralt may ask about his intentions, the Wild Hunt, Yennefer and/or other major events. Geralt must then choose to either let Letho go or fight him to the death. Depending on the outcome of that choice, Letho will ultimately either leave or be killed by Geralt in their duel.

In The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt [ | ]

If Letho was not killed at Loc Muinne in the previous game, he can be found in No Man's Land in Velen , hiding at the Reardon Manor . When Geralt talks to him, he will reveal that after Loc Muine, Emperor Emhyr has decided to clean up loose ends - including himself. Despite his work for Nilfgaard, hired assassins have been hounding the Viper witcher ever since his last meeting with Geralt. Reardon family holdings were supposed to be a fool-proof hideout - until Louis , an associate who provided him with the hideout, betrayed Letho.

Geralt can choose to aid Letho in dealing with the bounty hunters and interrogating Louis. This inevitably leads to a showdown with the latter (and his men), though they are hardly a challenge for two veteran witchers. After the slaughter ends, Louis reveals that he sold Letho out to Nilfgaard's bounty hunter, Arnout Vester , in return for half the bounty and immunity from prosecution.

Confronting the Nilfgaardian, Letho asks Geralt not to intervene while he deals with them. He comes up, intimidates them, and gets shot in the arm for his trouble. The giant doesn't let that slow him down - he slaughters the bounty hunter's band until only he and two others are left. Then, he collapses due to the poison's effects. At this juncture, Geralt can intervene.

• If Geralt intervenes , Arnout winds up chopped into pieces. He drags Letho away and waits for him to come to. When he does, Letho reveals that it was all a gambit: He paid off the crossbowman to shoot him with a poisoned bolt, so that he would enter a lethargic state and appear dead. That would cause news that Letho of Guleta is dead to spread, giving him peace. Letho decides that he has to disappear, but Geralt can invite him to Kaer Morhen , making him appear in the end game.
• If Geralt doesn't , Letho's plan succeeds. Letho is dead - long live Letho!

He is a Witcher from the School of the Viper. His closest associates are Auckes and Serrit, also Kingslayers and Witchers from the School of the Viper. For reasons which were initially unknown, he enlisted the help of Iorveth and the Scoia'tael to aid him in his plan to kill the kings of the Northern Kingdoms. To back his claim, this man showed Iorveth a head he claims belonged to Demavend, King of Aedirn and Sovereign of the Pontar valley.

Biography [ ]

Early life [ ].

As a young man, Letho was trained at the witcher school of the Wyrm located in the unknown territory of the Nilgaardian Empire . During the Grass Trial, he eventually underwent mutations, making him another witcher. During his witcher training, Letho learned a lot about the Wild Hunt and wondered if his witcher school was founded only to find the Wild Hunt and to unravel their mystery. After the Witcher School of the Viper ceased to exist, Letho and the rest of the remaining witchers from the school of the Viper who managed to survive began traveling around the world to hunt down monsters, like most witchers of other schools.

In the forests of Angren on July 25, 1270, Letho was close to death after being struck by the tail of a Slytherin, but Geralt, a witcher from the School of the Wolf, found and rescued him in pursuit of the Wild Hunt to save Yennefer. In gratitude for saving his life, Letho told Geralt where to find the Wild Hunt and, along with his own companions, went with him in search of the spectral riders. Finally, the group caught up with the Wild Hunt during the winter solstice at the Hanged Man's Tree in Nilfgaard. Despite their skills, the witchers were unable to defeat all the warriors and a stalemate occurred before Geralt offered his soul in exchange for Yennefer.

Feeling that leaving the sorceress somewhere would be disrespectful to Geralt, Letho and the witchers took care of Yennefer. However, she suffered from amnesia and caused endless trouble for the group, which in the Nilfgaardian Empire meant she could be caught and killed. While the group traveled constantly to avoid drawing attention to themselves, they were eventually apprehended and thrown into prison. However, later Emperor Emhyr var Emreis himself approached Letho and offered him a deal he couldn't refuse: wreak havoc in the North by killing some of its rulers, blame the Lodge of Sorceresses, and the Viper School would be restored.

Killing kings [ ]

King Esterad Thyssen of Kovir and Poviss was initially Letho's first target, but his assassination did not occur as the regicides stumbled upon Sheala de Tansarville , who had Letho assassinate King Demavend. So in 1271, Letho boarded Demavend's ship on Pontar and, using a pod based on the north wind, froze most of the ship and almost everyone on board, except for a handful that were protected by Abelard's magic. However, it wasn't enough and all the guards fell to Letho's blade before he pounced on the king and killed him, then beheaded him as proof. At de Tansarville's suggestion, Letho then sought out Iorveth; however, rather than simply using the Scoia'tael to lay low after the kill as Sheala had predicted, Letho also ensured an alliance between the regicides and the Scoia'tael, whereby the latter helped Letho and his companions kill the kings of the North in any way they could.

Since the regicides' first attempt on King Foltest failed due to Geralt's presence at the time of the attack and the would-be assassin's death, Letho planned a second attempt on the life of the Temerian monarch with Iorveth, out of Sheala's influence or within the reach of anyone else. Aware of the imminent siege of La Valette Castle, Letho decided to pose as a monk guarding the king's children - a disguise he acted out as a defenseless monk who is tortured and then kills the person who took him to Solitude to keep the secret. Foltest, having successfully taken over the castle, appeared with Geralt, now acting as a bodyguard, and then asked the witcher to give him and the children some space. With his back turned, Geralt heard the attack too late as Letho revealed himself right after he killed Foltest and escaped through a window to escape with the help of the Scoia'tael, leaving Geralt wrongly accused of regicide. Shortly after this assassination, Letho tried to betray Iorveth by turning one of his commandos against him. However, his leader refused, so Letho killed his entire unit to cover his tracks and left Ciaran to be captured by the Flotsam guards.

In an attempt to catch Letho, Geralt, who now knew that the Viper School witcher was trying to get rid of Iorweth, staged Iorweth's kidnapping as a ruse to expose his treachery. However, Iorveth and his Scoia'tael were attacked by the Blue Belts, leaving Geralt and Letho alone, and a fight ensued between them. Letho won, but spared Geralt. Letho revealed that Geralt once saved his life, so they were "even" now, and he escaped to kidnap Triss and force her to teleport to Aedirn. He managed to capture the sorceress, but fought back and killed Cedric when he tried to defend her.

Upon arriving in Vergen, Letho abandoned Triss and regrouped with Serrit and Egan at their hideout. Knowing that the Scoia'tael in the area would soon realize his betrayal, Letho and his two companions massacred them, leaving only one survivor. Hearing of the upcoming summit at Loc Muinne, Letho went there, entrusting Serrit and Egan with the murder of Henselt .

Knowing that Sheala had become a burden to him, Letho sabotaged her megascope, replacing one of the crystals with a defective one to get rid of her. Unless Geralt intervenes, Letho succeeds and Sheala explodes. The regicide then waits in the center of the Temerian Quarter in Loc Muinne to talk to his former comrade. Letho offered Geralt vodka, explaining that he had never had anything personal against him and proceeded to tell him about the deal with the emperor, the fate of Yennefer and everything he knew about the Wild Hunt.

In Witcher 3: Wild Hunt [ ]

Letho returns in Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, as a supporting character this time if he was spared in Assassins of Kings . He will be at the Reardon Manor in Velen and have a related quest Geralt can do to enlist him to fight the Wild Hunt in Kaer Morhen. Geralt has to interfere with his "death" and then later choose to let him go to Kaer Morhen. If Letho is sent Kaer Morhen, he aids in the battle against the Wild Hunt. If Vernon Roche and Ves are recruited, they will be less than happy with Geralt's decision regarding having Letho around and question him about it.

Letho joins Geralt and Lambert's hunting party against the Hunt's advanced scouting parties. When the trio are surrounded by the Hunt and Triss launched a fireball to save them, while Geralt and Lambert take cover with Quen, Letho picked himself up from underneath a dead Hunt warrior. Upon spotting Hunt general, Imlerith , Geralt advised against confronting him, prompting Letho to call him a "pansy".

After Vesemir's funeral, unless Geralt asks Letho to remain at Kaer Morhen, he resolves to travel east over the mountains.

• Along with Vilgefortz Letho is the only character who defeated Geralt of Rivia in combat.
• Letho is the most muscular witcher and the most muscular character in the entire series. Geralt himself admitted that he had never seen such a huge mountain of meat.
• If Letho arrives at Kaer Morhen and is not near Roche and Ves, Letho will start arguing with Eskel and Lambert and should not join the defense of Kaer Morhen. Although it is not known where the witchers from the wolf school have aversion to Letho, but it is assumed that he has to do with the events of the second part of the witcher game.

Personality

There is no way to describe his personality. Cold, calculative, gruff. He's seasoned, will sometimes do the right thing, but mainly doesn't seem to want to do anything, but shit that will help himself. Though him taking part in helping defeat the hunt, seemed to have gained him a bit more trust with Geralt. Not much though. Vernon still hates him. [Well, that is if you didn't kill him in the second game <3]

Not much is known about his backstory, other than the Journal Entry Dandelion had Provided:

   " Disguised as a blind monk, the mysterious assassin took Geralt by surprise. Displaying immense self-control and lightning reflexes — not to mention a talent for acting — he murdered the king before the witcher's very eyes. He then leapt out the window of the solar before Geralt could grab him. Surviving the fall unharmed, the assassin fled with the aid of some Scoia'tael.

  The information in Vernon Roche's possession served to confirm what Geralt had witnessed. A man matching the kingslayer's description had been seen in the company ofScoia'tael near the trading post of Flotsam. Finding him seemed like the witcher's only chance.

The mysterious individual now had a name. It appeared that this Letho, whoever he might be, was playing his own game — one in which the Scoia'tael had become an impediment. Yet his ultimate objective remained a mystery to Geralt.

  Letho had indeed been working with the Squirrels, doing their wet work for them. Geralt would soon learn the answers to many more questions.

In the ruins of the elven bath, Geralt and the mysterious assassin stood eye to eye a second time. Geralt was surprised by what he learned. Letho of Gulet had been a witcher! What is more, there were other kingslayers, and they and Letho had worked together to assassinate the two dead northern monarchs. The witcher and the assassin were also no strangers — in fact, Geralt had once saved Letho's life. Their discussion ended abruptly as arrows whistled through the air and swords clashed. Letho demonstrated his strength and skills by beating Geralt black and blue. Before leaving, he announced that he was on his way to Aedirn.

  The kingslayer proved true to his word and kidnapped Triss, wounding Cedric mortally in the process. He forced the sorceress to aid him by teleporting them both to Aedirn.

  The magic sent Geralt a vision and gave us another bit of information. Letho had been in the area earlier and had ordered his accomplices to assassinate King Henselt. The kingslayers had been working with Síle de Tansarville, but, just as with Iorveth, their paths had diverged. Whatever finale would conclude this story, Letho claimed it would take place in Loc Muinne.

  I listened to the rest of the tale with bated breath. Led to the summit by Nilfgaardian envoys, Letho publicly accused the sorcerers of commissioning the assassinations of the northern monarchs.

  The kingslayer's intricate plan was revealed too late. Letho had been working for the Nilfgaardian Empire from the very beginning — his mission, to seed chaos before the Black Ones embarked upon a new war. Taking advantage of the ambitions of the Lodge of Sorceresses, its contacts and financial means — not to mention the support of the oblivious Scoia'tael partisans — Letho had eliminated two of the Nordlings' most important monarchs, plunging their realms into chaos.

  On top of that, he had thrown suspicion on the sorcerers, who were just regaining their standing. Thus was the force which had stopped Nilfgaard at the Sodden dealt a truly shattering blow.

  Now Geralt had only to confront the kingslayer himself, so that the man could confirm or deny the witcher's suspicions. Only Letho knew the truth of the backroom intrigue which had left the north running with the blood of kings. Now I shall tell you about their final meeting, and its conclusion... "

As thanks for saving his life, Letho and his fellow witcher companions traveled with Geralt and eventually caught up with the Red Riders. Despite the witchers' skill, they couldn't defeat all the warriors and a stalemate ensued before Geralt offered himself in exchange for Yennefer. Feeling it'd be disrespectful to Geralt to just leave the sorceress somewhere, Letho and the witchers took care of her. However, she was, suffering from amnesia and in pain and caused an endless source of trouble for the group which, in the Nilfgaardian Empire, could mean her death for being an unruly sorceress. While the group traveled constantly to try and keep from being caught, they eventually were detained and thrown in jail. However, Emperor Emhyr var Emreis himself approached Letho and offered him a deal he couldn't refuse: sow chaos in the North, kill some of their rulers, and the emperor would have the School of the Viper rebuilt.

In 1271, Letho snuck onboard Demavend's ship out on the Pontar and, using a magic capsule, froze most of the ship and nearly everyone on board except a handful that were protected by Abelard's counter spell. However, this wasn't enough and all the guards fell to Letho's blade before he rounded on the king and killed him, then cut off his head for proof. He then sought out Iorveth with the head in tow and asked for the Scoia'tael's assistance in killing King Foltest of Temeria.

While the first attempt on Foltest's life failed due to Geralt being there at the same time of the attack, the kingslayers planned another attempt, this time for Letho to pose as a monk guarding over the king's children at La Valette Castle. After successfully taking over the castle, Foltest appeared with Geralt, now acting as a bodyguard, and the king asked for Geralt to give him and the children some space. With his back turned, Geralt heard the attack too late as Letho revealed himself just before he killed Foltest and fled out a window, leaving Geralt to be wrongly accused of regicide. Shortly after this assassination, Letho attempted to betray Iorveth by turning one of his lieutenants against him. However, the elf refused and Letho killed his entire command in retribution and left the elf to be captured by Flotsam's guards.

In an attempt to catch Letho, Geralt, who now knew that Iorveth had been in cohorts with the kingslayer, brought the elf to the Viper as a ruse to expose the latter's treachery. However, Iorveth and his Scoia'tael were attacked by the Blue Stripes, leaving Geralt and Letho to battle each other. Letho prevailed in the battle with Geralt but once the witcher was down, he didn't kill him. Letho then revealed that Geralt once saved his life, so with this small mercy they were now "even" before running off to kidnap Triss and force her to teleport them to Aedirn.

Right after Geralt's fight with Saesenthessis, Letho waited in the center of the Temerian Quarter in Loc Muinne to talk with his former comrade in arms, explaining he never had anything personal against Geralt and informed him about the emperor's deal with him. Letho and Geralt parted ways, believing they'd never see each other again.

Having succeeded in tearing the North apart, Letho learned afterwards that it was all for naught with Emperor Emhyr not only going back on his word to restore the School of the Viper but, as Letho was now a living witness to the emperor's plans, the witcher was a liability. With a high price on his head and bounty hunters chasing him everywhere, Letho traveled around, not staying anywhere too long, before he dropped in at the abandoned Reardon Manor in Velen in 1272. Just so happened, Geralt was in the area as well on unrelated business.

Letho and Geralt talked for a bit, with Letho explaining his "on the run" situation before a group of scouts arrived, no doubt sent to see if Letho was there. After the two witchers killed them off, Letho asked his former friend for help in dealing with the bounty hunters and the two set out together to track down Louis, an acquaintance of Letho's and the only one who knew where the witcher was hiding, having recommended the manor to Letho. It turned out that Louis sold him out and, not one to forgive such actions, Letho killed him. He then had Geralt follow him to Lindenvale and told Geralt that whatever happened next, to not interfere, before throwing a bomb at a nearby barn, causing it to explode and several armed bounty hunters to run out of a nearby hut. After a small chat between the group and Letho, one of them shot a crossbow at the witcher and he attacked, killing off 6 of them before falling over, dead. Letho woke up sometime later, with Geralt waiting nearby, having sensed on closer inspection that Letho had used a substance to only make it appear that he died.

However, as Geralt hadn't known about this beforehand, he'd killed off all the rest of the bounty hunters in retaliation and Letho told him off, stating his plan was to make it appear that he'd died so the bounty hunters would stop chasing him and spread the news of his "death" but now all the eyewitnesses were dead, ruining that plan.Having let the rest of the bounty hunters go, Letho was pleased to see that Geralt hadn't interfered with his ultimate plan: to make it look like he'd died so that the bounty hunters would stop chasing him and the witnesses would spread the news of his "death". However, he was thankful that Geralt had come along to help as his friend explained if he hadn't spoken up, the other bounty hunters would have cut off his head as proof; instead, they just took his medallion.If Geralt invites him to Kaer Morhen: regardless of the outcome with the bounty hunters, having nowhere else to go, Geralt invited Letho to Kaer Morhen, a place where he could lay low for awhile. Taking the offer, Letho made his way there and later participated in The Battle of Kaer Morhen, fighting alongside Geralt and Lambert against the Wild Hunt's scouts initially before the group retreated into the keep's courtyard. After the battle, he then informed Geralt he planned to travel east, past the mountains.

Letho jest łysym wiedźminem o przerażającym wyglądzie, potężnie zbudowanym, poznaczonym bliznami, o łysej głowie. Jest wyśmienitym wojownikiem, którego umiejętności mogą przewyższać nawet innych wiedźminów. W walce posługuje się mieczem dwuręcznym.

Jest niezwykle sprytny i inteligentny, co zadaje kłam jego aparycji brutalnego i głupiego osiłka. Znakomicie udaje mu się odnaleźć w każdej sytuacji i w każdym środowisku. Umiejętnie posługuje się kłamstwem lub manipulacją aby osiągnąć zamierzone przez siebie cele.

Okaże się, że Letho próbował upozorować swoją śmierć i jeżeli Geralt się nie wtrąci, Letho będzie zadowolony, że jest uważany za zmarłego. Po rozmowie może (na propozycję Geralta) udać się do Kaer Morhen , dokąd dociera pod koniec II aktu lub jeśli Biały Wilk nie złoży mu propozycji, wyjazdu do Kaer Morhen, wyruszy do Zerrikanii . Bierze udział w Bitwie w Kaer Morhen , podczas której udaje się wraz z Geraltem i Lambertem (którzy nie przypadli sobie do gustu) do lasu zamknąć portale Gonu. • Choć w cinematicu Wiedźmina 2 Letho zabijając Demawenda (oraz pozostałe nie zamarznięte osoby) posługuje się dwoma sztyletami to ogólnie jest jedynym znanym wiedźminem ze Szkoły Żmii, który używa dwuręcznego miecza w walce – jego towarzysze preferowali władanie dwoma, a nawet czterema długimi i solidnymi sztyletami zwanymi kłami. Jest to oczywiste odniesienie do tego, że żmije oraz inne węże posiadają właśnie cztery kły.

Geralt of Rivia or Letho of Gulet: Who had the upper hand?

This is something I've been interested in doing for awhile. I've gone over it a bit in other threads, but I don't think I've ever done a full analysis on their two fights and who had the advantages where. Here I'll be going over their fighting styles and just giving details on who I think was better. Remember that their two fights happened in The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings , so this will be comparing how they were there, before Geralt had his mutations enhanced further in Blood & Wine . If you disagree with anything I've said, please let me know. Just bear in mind that this is just my personal opinion so there are bound to be some disagreements. Spoiler alert.

First Fight:

The two match in speed and skill, both performing advanced techniques such as pirouettes and avoiding the other's blows.

The two clash their swords more than briefly while they exchange words, with neither giving any ground. Notice how Letho is the one who instigated the clash with Geralt in a defensive position, showing that Letho is the more aggressive fighter and Geralt likes to stand his ground and keep a strong defense. Their occupations play a role here. Geralt is a witcher, somebody who spends almost all of his time fighting monsters who outclass him physically, and as a result he takes a more skill-based and defensive approach to battle, because that's how he wins against the opponents he usually faces. He uses a broad/longsword against almost all his opponents, and that includes Letho here because they are effective against physically superior opponents. Letho quit being a witcher long ago, and turned to the life of an assassin. As an assassin the opponents he faces are humans or humanoids, people who he can blitz without difficulty as is made clear throughout the game. Even Elves, who are naturally more dexterous than humans, can't hope to keep up with him. This makes him use a much more aggressive fighting style because the people he fights are often much worse physically than him, so he doesn't need to defend and take care the way Geralt does. Fight scenes with Geralt are the only times in this game that Letho uses anything other than daggers. This is because daggers are effective for finishing fights you know you will win quickly, whereas actual swords are better for battles up in the air, where there is actually a battle to be had, rather than just a slaughter. Geralt carries a dagger with him always as well, but unlike Letho he only uses it on certain occasions rather than as the standard. Every time he uses it is to blitz people, when he doesn't want to get into a full fight. This supports Letho's use of them for blitzing. Of course Geralt is the only opponent we see Letho fight who he can't blitz, so he uses a weapon good for actual fights: a greatsword. Notice how he wields this weapon just as fast and effectively as Geralt does his smaller and lighter sword, and during the fighting gameplay he'll sometimes use it one-handed for quick attacks. With him pushing the advantage using a much bigger sword, it seems clear that Letho is the stronger of the two, but Geralt isn't far off. In conclusion, Letho is much more aggressive than Geralt and Geralt is much more defensive than Letho. Another thing worth mentioning to do with their occupation is that the only sword Letho has is is steel greatsword, rather than the steel and silver traditionally expected of a witcher. This probably means he no longer runs into monsters to fight, and sees no need for a weapon that kills them. Geralt having more equipment on him could be what them even in speed, when Letho's sword is heavier. He wants to be as fast as possible, so it makes sense he'd travel light. Letho was formerly a witcher though, so he undoubtedly knows how to fight and beat things with better physicals than himself.

Letho's strength pushes Geralt to retreat, and they both fall down a conveniently placed hole in the ground that moves them to a better fighting location. Thanks, Elves! They both recover from the fall pretty quickly. Geralt landed on his back into water, and Letho sees what happened and turns his nosedive into a flip, allowing him to land on his feet. They are ready to fight after this.

Geralt tries to switch things up and takes the offensive, which Letho immediately exploits. He shows blatant physical superiority by ducking Geralt's sword swing, before pinning him under the water with one hand and then using that single hand to throw Geralt a few metres into a wall with enough force for Geralt to keep travelling onwards even after breaking through it. Letho is casually holding his greatsword in the other hand while this happens. Letho catches Geralt off guard and then pins him in the water in order to daze him so that he doesn't resist the throw, so Letho isn't straight-up overpowering Geralt. Still, this shows that taking the offensive against Letho is the wrong move because of his better physicals and almost equal skill.

Geralt looks dazed after the throw, and Letho jumps down to the same level with a smile on his face, and the two prepare to reengage in battle.

Throughout most of The Witcher 2 Geralt had amnesia, which included his first fight against Letho. During the fight, Letho makes some comments on Geralt's skill. Remember that Letho knew Geralt before he lost his memory, so he should be a reliable source on Geralt's combat prowess. Remember that Letho - contrary to his appearance - is one of the smartest, most deceptive and cunning people in the series, so everything he says in both fights could just be a taunt and have no actual meaning. Some of his quotes contradict, so take them as you will.

I see you still know how to fight.

He says this at the end of the first fighting cutscene. It implies that losing his memory hasn't affected Geralt's skill, which is backed up in the first game by Geralt going into combat straight after losing all of his memories. If I remember correctly, there was a line of dialogue about it not making much of a difference as well. This could show that the first fight cutscene was Letho testing Geralt to see how good he was

You fight well, but you were better once.

Said during the fighting. Implies that Geralt's skill is still great, though he isn't at his peak. This is said in response to Geralt's line, "You should have surrendered when you had the chance." With this timing of the line, Letho could be acknowledging that Geralt at peak strength is a better fighter than him but he can beat him as he is here. It's possible that he was just saying this to throw Geralt off though, because Geralt retorts, "The muscles remember." Of course Geralt doesn't know how good he was previously, so he isn't completely reliable. It could be said that Letho subtly acknowledges what Geralt says to be true though when he responds, "One thing the Wild Hunt couldn't take from you!"

After the gameplay segment, Geralt and Letho switch styles. This time Geralt is making much more movement and pushing his advantage with pirouettes to make him harder to pin down, and Letho is conserving energy and fighting more defensive, trying to tag Geralt who is pushing him into a corner which would limit his maneuverability. It's possible that because of Letho's fighting style, the shorter a fight is the more of a chance he has of winning. The longer it draws out the lesser his chances. That's why defensive styles are the best type to use against him. People who exploit physicals will often lose against him if their physicals don't match up, which he knows and takes advantage of. If a fighter slips up early on against Letho, it's practically over for them. People who can defend themselves until he tires out have the best chance, but Letho is still matching Geralt's sword and avoiding being hit despite having slowed down.

This time it's Geralt who pushes the brief clash, and Letho drops his sword. It's ambiguous whether Letho was disarmed or purposely dropped it. If the former, it shows Geralt to be the more skilled fighter of the two, but the latter could show Letho realising victory isn't certain is sword combat and backing out in order to catch Geralt off guard with a Sign.

The two witchers clash Signs, with Letho's Aard overpowering Geralt's, ending the fight. Witcher Signs are a result of the Trial of the Grasses, and Geralt got extra mutations compared to other witchers. This could make you wonder why Letho's Signs are more powerful, and the size of Letho's arms are important here. I've done some research into it, and it isn't naturally possible to have muscle growth like that. What's likely is that Letho had a unique reaction to witcher mutations, increasing his physicals more than would usually happen for witchers which balances out with Geralt's extra mutations, and gives him more powerful Signs. That's why other witchers aren't really presented at the level these two are. Letho lets Geralt live after defeating him as payment for Geralt saving his life before, so he was holding back to a degree in this fight. Similarly, Geralt wanted to clear his name of the murder of King Foltest so he was most likely doing the same.

Second Fight:

Just before their second fight though, Geralt recovers his memories completely and Letho still seems confident that he can beat him. (Rewind a bit.) This could connote that Geralt's amnesia had no effect on his combat ability, because he is sure that fighting Geralt with his memory will play out the same way as the time they fought when Geralt had amnesia. He then makes comments about Geralt throughout the fight. Remember that they are fighting to the death this time.

I'm better. I can tell already.

Could be acknowledging that Geralt has improved because of his regained memories, but not by enough to win.

You tire quickly.

Probably just used to taunt Geralt into attacking him and making him lose his cool. Lots of his comments can actually be viewed this way. The last fight had Letho wearing himself out, so this could bear some relevance to that.

I don't want to kill you.

Before the fight Letho seems genuinely confident that he'll win, but still says that Geralt can walk away anyway because they're now even. When Geralt chooses to fight rather than walk away, Letho repeatedly taunts him and acts confident. This line plays when Letho is on half health, so it could show that he's worried that he'll get beaten.

You're nowhere near my level.

Probably just another taunt.

I've had enough of this dance. Goodbye, Geralt!

Letho is angry when he says this. Could indicate that up until this point Letho wasn't taking the fight seriously and he is now determined to finish Geralt off. Doesn't seem to be worried, so he probably has faith in his ability to win if he fights seriously. He can see his defeat at this point and realises he has to keep complete focus and not taunt in order to win.

Geralt is much more fluid and maneuverable than Letho because of their difference in size, and Geralt makes much more movement once again. Even though Geralt looks faster here, they are both able to block swords and dodge blows, and they don't seem to be any different in raw skill. Notice in this part as well as others that Geralt has an exaggerated dance-like fighting style, as opposed to Letho's minimalist movements to conserve energy. Letho most likely fights like this to end battles quickly which supports his primary use of daggers, and Geralt fights the way he does to throw opponents off guard and to make him harder to predict. Geralt is from the School of the Wolf and Letho is from the School of the Viper as their medallions show, so the fighting styles could just be a school difference like with weapons and armour.

Geralt narrowly avoids Letho's blade. This is the first time in the fight anyone is shown to be in real danger, and it's Letho with the advantage.

Letho lands the first hit, a slice across the gut, as the two are close together. Letho gets past Geralt's guard when no sword hits had landed in this fight or the one before.

Geralt slides under Letho's arms when they run at each other. After that, Geralt unambiguously disarms Letho with a spin attack, which knocks his opponent off balance and allows him to kill him in the same move. Geralt is adapting to their previous fight, by knocking Letho off balance as he disarms and finishing it quickly so that Letho can't overpower Geralt with Signs again like he did when deprived of his sword in their last fight. The blow is fatal, leaving Geralt as the victor and Letho dead.

What's worth noting is that they are portrayed as almost dead-equals throughout the game, and no matter how much we analyse it the developers only expect people to take the fights at face value. For other things that show they are similar, Letho outruns Geralt chasing after him near the beginning of the game, and there are certain bits where Letho stands in for Geralt. At one point in Loc Muinne you get a choice to either save Triss Merigold on your own or save Anaïs La Valette with Vernon Roche. If you pick the latter option, it is later revealed that Letho broke into a Nilfgaardian war camp, killing all the soldiers inside and saving Triss in Geralt's place with no real difference between the two. In The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt , Letho is an optional ally in the battle of Kaer Morhen. If he is recruited there is a bit where he rams a Wild Hunt warrior into the ground in order to help out Lambert who is being pinned down, and if he is not recruited, Geralt does exactly the same thing in exactly the same way. The character models are just swapped.

Honestly I don't see why these quotes contradict each other. Letho was a witness to Geralt's abduction by the Wild Hunt, he was no doubt curious how it affected him. The first quote has place barely after trading few blows, the second after prolonged engagement. Letho had time to more accurately gauge Geralt's skill level.

Either Geralt legitimately disarmed Letho or Letho knew of his own inferiority and that his only chance to beat Geralt is by overpowering him with magic. Letho, being extremely intelligent, wouldn't just drop the sword beceuse of possibility of loosing in contest of swordsmanship. And he doesn't need both hands to cast a Sign. Droping a weapon when fighting with someone like Geralt is practicaly a suicide.

How to Complete Letho’s NPC Questline in The Witcher 3

Letho of Gulet is no stranger to those who’ve played The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. He was the main antagonist and the cause of most (if not all) of Geralt’s troubles in that game. Here’s how to complete Letho’s NPC questline in The Witcher 3.

The Witcher 3 Letho NPC Questline Walkthrough

Keep in mind this quest is only available in certain circumstances. It entirely depends on how you finished The Witcher 2, or the decision you made when establishing your world state in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt  during your little interview at Vizima, Letho can be alive in your game.

If you did happen to choose to let Letho live even after all that he did in the last game, you will come across him during the sidequest ‘The Fall of the House of Reardon (picked up from Lindenvale).’ A woman will ask you to check out her old estate that has been overrun by monsters. Once Geralt arrives, he will find a barn full of booby traps that you can either disarm or choose to ignore. Head to the back of the barn and fix the ladder so that you can climb up and reveal Letho hiding from some enemies.

Ghost of the Past Walkthrough

From there, you can decide to help Letho with those looking for him, which you should in order to trigger the ‘Ghost of the Past’ questline and see how this all ends. Jump down and show off your sword skills in order to help an old friend, of sorts. After slaying the groups of scouts, you will have the opportunity to ride with Letho to the old acquaintance who sold him out. Go ahead and take care of that traitor as well.

Letho will now take you to his last destination and that is where this particular The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt questline splits and Geralt will have some decisions to make. Letho will face a bounty hunter, but before doing so he asks that you not interfere no matter what happens. He then goes into battle solo where he falls to a crossbow. This is when Geralt must make his first decision: does he kill those who have slain his friend, or does he not interfere?

It turns out that Letho had this whole thing planned and was trying to fake his own death. If Geralt chooses to kill the bounty hunters then there are no witnesses to spread the woven tale, setting Letho free once and for all. Don’t worry though, if you did happen to go into a rage, murdering everyone before you, you still have one more opportunity to help Letho in The Witcher 3: Wild hunt. After spoiling his plan (that he should’ve just clued you in on), you can offer him a place at Kaer Morhen where he can find safe refuge.

It’s awesome to stumble across him, and even cooler to have the option of lending him a helping hand despite all he’s done in the past. Of course, the decision is ultimately up to you.
