Up to 20: cruiser / Over 20: sports cruiser / Over 30: racer

Sometimes it’s hard to see from the outside what performance you might expect from one sailing boat vs another and so, like in cars, one measure often used is the Power to Weight ratio, in boats this is called the Sail Area to Displacement ratio or SAD. This is a universal measure that allows us to compare widely different models and come to a reasonably accurate view on their likely relative performance under similar sailing conditions.

Multihull World use a variation of the SAD calculations used by the major sail racing organisations and the figures we publish broadly look like this:

• SAD under 15 : Motor sailer
• SAD 15 - 20: cruiser
• SAD 20 - 25: Performance cruiser
• SAD 25 – 30: Cruiser racer
• SAD above 30: race boat

The calculation takes the upwind sail area and divides it by the actual weight of the boat. The calculation is a little more complicated than that but that’s the essence. It takes no account of hull shape, skipper quality or any other differences.

Unfortunately, not every vendor knows the sail area of their sails and not everyone knows the weight of their boat – for this reason we sometimes don’t have the SAD available to publish. Also, some manufacturers publish a weight that is well below the real weight of their boats and in that way appear to have much more performance than they actually do.

However, leaving those anomalies aside, we think this measure is an interesting one for those who are comparing multihulls or are coming to multihulls for the first time.

As a general rule – one generally trades performance for accommodation. If your boat is under 50ft and has walkways either side of beds low in the hull then she isn’t going to sail very well!

ABOUT CATAMARAN BOATS

Catamarans have two hulls and can be either sailing or power boats. With a wide beam, they are very spacious, as well as stable, safe, and fast, making them popular bluewater cruisers. Search for new or used catamarans for sale by all the top brands, and refine the search by price, length, or location. 

Main Characteristics of Catamarans

Catamarans are easily identified by their double hulls (and in the case of trimarans, triple hulls), which make them stand out among more traditional monohull vessels. Catamarans can be either sail or motor vessels, and vary widely in size from beach-launched and dinghy-style beginner catamarans up to superyacht luxury vessels. 

Catamarans have many positive attributes, which are helping them gain popularity throughout the world. Due to their overall wider beam, they offer much more space than a monohull of the same length; for example, a 40-foot catamaran often offers the same space as a 50-foot monohull. They have a unique layout, with larger boats featuring cabins in both hulls and a spacious living space on an above-the-waterline bridgedeck in between the hulls. Many catamarans are also capable of high speeds, especially in a straight line, which makes them popular to race as well as cruise for long distances.

When it comes to safety, catamarans are highly regarded as being virtually unsinkable thanks to having two hulls, a characteristic valued by bluewater cruisers. While they are extremely stable boats and heel far less than a monohull, in storm-force winds and waves they can capsize. Even then, they are much less likely to sink than a monohull.

Types of Catamaran

Sailing catamarans.

Sailing catamarans dominate the multihull market and have been in production for decades. Sales are seeing a huge boom, however, as sailors realize the safety and space advantages they typically hold over monohull yachts. Sailing cats can be as small as a dinghy, sailed off a beach, such as the one- and two-person Hobie Cats. From there they can range up to multi-cabin vessels with huge above-water living spaces designed for long-range voyages.

Power Catamarans

Also rising in popularity are power catamarans , as owners realize the vast living space that they offer. With their wide beam, they allow for multiple cabins between the two hulls and a light-filled, above-water bridgedeck and cockpits that allow for multiple couples or large families to cruise on a vessel that can also be handled by just two people. 

Cruising and Bluewater Catamarans

There is considerable crossover between bluewater and cruising catamarans, with many suitable for both coastal weekend cruising and around-the-world ocean voyages. When it comes to either, the positive attributes of the catamaran shine through. Both power and sailing catamarans offer dramatically more space in the same length of boat as a monohull, with huge amounts of living space, wraparound views, full-sized galleys, multiple cabins and heads, and spacious decks. They’re fast and sturdy, too, and don’t heel like a standard monohull under sail, offering incredible stability.

Luxury Catamarans

Beautiful examples of luxury catamarans (many of which are semi- or custom-built) are becoming more commonplace, with some classifying as true superyachts. At a smaller scale, luxury catamarans can offer high-spec living spaces, high performance, green propulsion, renewable energy, and the latest innovation. 

Best Catamaran Brands

The catamaran industry is still relatively small compared to that of monohulls, with some key brands paving the way in design and development. As catamarans are favored by many charter companies, some brands such as Lagoon and Leopard produce models for both the charter and private owner market with different layouts. These are big names in the catamaran industry, with a fleet of sturdy, well-designed sailing and motor cats in the 40-60-foot sector. 

Within the competitive 40- to 60-foot sector the French company Fountaine-Pajot has been in the industry for over four decades and is also highly regarded for its bluewater cruisers. Other notable brands include Outremer , Catana , Beneteau Excess , Antares, and Xquisite , all designed for long-term livability as well as bluewater cruising. So too are HH Catamarans and BALI Catamaran s, known for their clever use of interior space. 

On the smaller end of the cruising catamaran sector are top brands with moderate-sized models such as Seawind , Nautitech and Comar . Their models run the gamut from high-performance cats to smart, modestly priced cruisers.

When it comes to motor catamarans, the market is still relatively small but growing year on year. Many of the brands mentioned above also build excellent motor cats to add to their line-up, while brands such as Invincible Boats , Freeman Boatworks , and Aquila Power Catamarans are specializing in fishing and cruising motor cats.

Parents plea for awareness after fake oxycodone laced with nitazene causes son's death

Jetson Gordon had just turned 18 when he moved from Mullumbimby in New South Wales to Melbourne for a fresh start.

He loved his new carpentry apprenticeship and was living with flatmates who were quickly becoming friends.

But when the pressures of starting a new job and being financially independent started to make Jetson's anxiety worse, he turned to the dark web to buy oxycodone.

"Previously he'd had an unfortunate experience around pharmaceuticals and prescribed medication to the point where he didn't feel comfortable using them and felt it was better for him to purchase online illegally," his stepmum Emily Berry said.

"I don't think he knew of any risks in doing it or he wouldn't have done it."

Jetson died in April 2022, two-and-a-half months after his 18th birthday. 

A post-mortem and toxicology screening found Jetson died from n-pyrrolidino etonitazene toxicity.

Nitazenes are a class of synthetic opioids first developed by pharmaceutical companies in the 1950s but they were too potent to ever be used clinically. 

His dad and stepmum believe his death was one of the first overdoses to involve nitazene, which is increasingly being found in illicit drugs and counterfeit pharmaceuticals.

'It's completely rocked us to our core'

Jetson's flatmate found him unresponsive in his room on the morning of April 7, 2022.

Several days later, his parents found packaging postmarked from the United Kingdom on his desk with 24 pills which looked like oxycodone, and half a pill in his bed.

"They were blue and stamped with the oxycodone symbol 'M' and looked completely official," Ms Berry said.

Police who investigated Jetson's death told his family it would be impossible to trace where the deadly drug came from and who was responsible.

The UK is a destination for nitazenes manufactured in China, "but is not always a final destination as we have also seen them exported onwards to other countries", a spokesperson for the UK National Crime Agency said. 

Although a "significant proportion" of nitazenes detected are used to fortify heroin, they're also found in fake pharmaceuticals like diazepam and oxycodone.  

John Gordon spoke to his son the night before he died. 

He told him, "Dad, I just wanted to say, I really, really love you".

"It's been incredibly hard, it's not something you plan for, and it never goes away," Mr Gordon said.

"It's completely rocked us to our core … it's life-changing," Ms Berry said.

Dozens of overdoses linked to synthetic opioid this year

Nitazines are stronger than fentanyl, hundreds of times more potent than morphine, and have been found in every state and territory in Australia.

According to the Coroner's Report, the type of nitazene Jetson took was 43 times stronger than fentanyl and 883 times stronger than morphine.

At least 17 Victorians have died from overdoses involving nitazenes since May 2021, according to the Coroners Court of Victoria. 

But "these figures could change as coroners' investigations progress", a spokesperson said. 

"In most of these deaths, the available evidence indicated that the deceased probably used nitazenes while believing they were using other substances, such as heroin, oxycodone, and MDMA," a coroner court spokesperson said.

The most common nitazenes to date have been protonitazene, metonitazene and n-pyrrolidino etonitazene.

The coroners court of NSW and Queensland and the National Coronial Information System could not provide any data on deaths linked to nitazenes.

There have been dozens of overdoses linked to the synthetic opioid since the start of the year, including a cluster of about 20 in Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District.

The prevalance of nitazenes has prompted calls for more drug-checking services and wider use of naloxone, a medicine that rapidly reverses the effects of an opioid overdose or adverse reaction.

'More potent and more available'

Last month, a South Australian man suffered a near-fatal drug overdose after he consumed a single street-bought oxycodone pill containing nitazene.

It was the first time in the state protonitazene had been found in a drug designed to mimic a prescribed medication, according to SA Health officials.

Drug policy research group the Penington Institute has tracked an increase in nitazene detections in counterfeit pharmaceuticals, like benzodiazepine, opioid drugs and even cocaine.

"It's a sign that the drug market is becoming increasingly dangerous, they are more potent and more available," CEO John Ryan said. 

Experts believe a significant drop in Afghanistan's opium production may increase the use of synthetic opioids like nitazenes. 

They are also cheaper and easier to produce than plant-based opioids, which makes them more appealing to traffickers. 

"Traffickers are interested in maximising profits and these synthetic opioids are incredibly powerful and easy to traffic because you only need such a small quantity," Mr Ryan said.

"But the difference between a powerful drug and a lethal dose is extremely hard to determine."

A 'false promise' of safety

All types of medicines and medical devices are targets for counterfeiting and are often deliberately packaged to look authentic, according to the Therapeutic Goods Administration.

Experts believe this gives a false sense of security to people who buy them illegally. 

"People like the packaging and like the sense of safety they get from the image of them being pharmaceuticals, so it's a false promise of safety," Mr Ryan said.

"It is a consumer-driven market and so we are seeing traffickers satisfying consumer demand for intoxication."

Mr Gordon and Ms Berry believe their son would never have taken counterfeit oxycodone if he knew the risks.

"I feel like if Jetson had known there was a nitazene issue out there he wouldn't have done it, because he was actually quite a cautious guy," Ms Berry said.

"He didn't know the risks, he didn't even know it was a thing," Mr Gordon said.

The lack of awareness around nitazenes has made the couple feel alone in their grief. 

They hope sharing what happened to Jetson will help prevent further deaths. 

"Deep down it feels like he was one of the first ones and there was nothing he could've done because there's no amount of awareness you could have brought to this if you didn't know it [nitazene] existed," Ms Berry said.

"Younger kids are buying these products quite easily through the internet and they are taking a big risk that they aren't aware of," Mr Gordon said.

"We need people to understand what has happened to our beautiful boy and how easily it can, and is, happening to other unsuspecting people," he said.

Mars, the company behind M&M’s and Snickers, has agreed to acquire Kellanova, the snack food business spun off by Kellogg’s last year, in a multibillion-dollar deal that will create a new global food giant.

The acquisition, one of the largest food deals in years, was announced on Wednesday . The all-cash deal values Kellanova at $35.9 billion, including debt, a hefty premium to the company’s market value before news of the deal first began to leak.

Kellanova owns a large menu of brands including Cheez-It, Pringles and Eggo.

Mars, which is privately owned and best known for its chocolate candies, has tried to broaden beyond sweets. In 2020, it bought Kind North America, the company that makes Kind Bars. Mars has also invested heavily in its sizable pet business, which includes the pet food brand Iams, as well as animal clinics and hospitals.

Acquiring Kellanova would allow Mars to offer an array of both salty and sweet food. It would echo a strategy that Hershey employed, with its acquisition of the parent company of SkinnyPop and Dot’s Pretzels.

“In welcoming Kellanova’s portfolio of growing global brands, we have a substantial opportunity for Mars to further develop a sustainable snacking business that is fit for the future,” Poul Weihrauch, the chief executive of Mars, said in a statement.

The deal comes at a tenuous time for food and beverage manufacturers. For more than two years, Big Food has steadily increased prices on products, partly to cover higher commodity and labor costs but also to expand their profit margins. Now, some consumers are pushing back, either buying less or trading down to generic brands. The result for many food companies has been slower revenue growth and fewer items sold.

Executives at Kellanova noted this month that consumers who earned $100,000 or less in income and had children were proving to be especially price sensitive when shopping at the grocery store. Kellanova has increased its promotions in hopes of luring the shoppers back.

“Consumers are getting more used to these prices,” Steve Cahillane, the chief executive of Kellanova, said to analysts and investors on an earnings call. “It doesn’t mean they’re not still under pressure and that we have to, you know, make sure to some of the earlier conversations, we’re hitting the right price points, the right pack sizes, you know, the right promotions at the right time of the month.”

Those promotions are, so far, supporting volume growth in key markets. In the quarter ending late June, the company reported a 4 percent increase in organic net sales — excluding currency and the divestiture of its business in Russia — with volumes growing 2 percent in North America, which makes up roughly half of its business.

Kellanova was created by the food giant Kellogg’s, which spun off its North American cereal business, now known as WK Kellogg Co., from its snack business, rebranded as Kellanova, last year.

Kellanova, which says it operates in 180 markets, generated more than $13 billion in revenue last year. It employs roughly 23,000 people. Mars, with more than 150,000 employees, recorded about $50 billion in sales last year.

The deal is expected to close in the first half of next year, the companies said. The acquisition could attract the attention of regulators, who have taken a tough approach to corporate consolidation under the Biden administration. Analysts from Jefferies said in a report on Wednesday that they found an overlap in only 18 country-product combinations, out of hundreds of possibilities, “likely limiting any roadblocks to the deal,” they said.

Deal-makers have been scrambling to better understand what antitrust policy might look like after November’s presidential election, under either Vice President Kamala Harris or former President Donald J. Trump.

Shares of Kellanova rose, but hovered a bit short of the $83.50 price per share offered by Mars, implying some uncertainty about the deal getting done.
