I won’t bore you with yet another rendition of the history of Cabo Yachts. Suffice it to say they’ve been at the top of the sailing and sport-fishing pecking order for many years, and each successive introduction of a new model simply cements that position.

Performance Admittedly, at one time, Cabo sacrificed some head-sea capability for more interior space. I’m pleased to say that that sacrifice has been negated on this and all new models with the redesign of every running surface. This 40-footer runs as smoothly and as dry as its best competition.

We ran the newest Cabo during the Miami Boat Show, where, more times than not, sea conditions qualify as snotty. But that’s a good thing since we could test the boat offshore in the rough seas out of the northwest (4 to 6 feet in the Gulf Stream) and do our speed runs in the relative peace of Government Cut. The Cabo 40 runs quite flat after taking 10 seconds to lift onto plane; eight seconds of that, of course, is the lag from turbos building boost.

Expensive but worth every penny, and every model is a proven fish raiser.| The boat doesn’t offer a wide range of trim adjustment, and you’ll find lateral adjustment more effective than fore and aft.

This midsize (for Cabo) model with twin Caterpillar C-12s rated at 700 hp each topped out at 35.1 knots while full of fuel and with more people aboard than I’d ever consider taking on my own. Wide open (2,345 rpm), the 40 gulped 64 gph giving it a range at that speed of a mere 302 nautical miles. By simply dropping speed to 2,100 rpm, you get a much more efficient fuel consumption of 47 gph to boost your range to 375 nm. You can extend that range to over 400 nm at 24 knots, and if you want to take your boat to Venezuela, traveling at displacement speeds of 10 knots or less affords a range of more than 1,600 nm.

I particularly appreciated the ease of driving the Cabo 40. It offers true, one-finger steering ? a good thing since in a hard-over turn at speed, the Cabo leans over and carves 180 degrees in just about two boat lengths.

Backing down moves a very slight amount of water through the transom door, and that drains instantly through large scuppers. When turning on a sailfish, the boat spun fast enough at idle with the wheel over that I can’t even imagine ever needing to use throttles in this maneuver.

Drifting beam-to in the troughs, the Cabo 40 exhibited a slow roll moment with very gentle transitions.

Fishing The 40 flybridge’s cockpit modules contain all the usual features, such as a sink, a bait freezer, a refrigerated drink box, and tackle storage. You’ll also find a large, lighted baitwell in the transom. Cabos are proven fish raisers (just look at their history of tournaments won), so the company provides large in-deck fish boxes to port and starboard.

You’ll feel secure both fishing and wiring, as the cockpit coaming hit me just above the knee. Resting my chest on the coaming, I could just touch the water’s surface, so releasing fish should present no problem.

I found the flybridge ladder particularly impressive. I’m not fond of climbing ladders when my hands are wet in a heavy sea, so a better ladder design makes me happy. To Cabo’s credit, climbing up and down the flybridge ladder could hardly feel more secure. The angle and rung spacing, deck hole and handholds are all perfect. And you can come down frontward or backward with equal ease, so if you need to get to the cockpit in a hurry when a fish strikes, you stand a greater chance of getting there safely.

Design and Construction I will go on record here with a blanket statement: Wiring and plumbing at Cabo has become more than engineering and installation. It has become an art form that no other company executes as well. In fact, Cabo’s wiring is so good that instead of hiding it, the company now puts the terminals and bus bars behind glass doors so the world can revel in the glory of wiring done well.

In the salon, an L-shaped dinette settee can honestly seat four or five compact adults. Rod storage under the portside L-shaped settee represents the only underseating storage here. The lack of storage under the aft settee  affords additional headroom in the engine compartment.

The horseshoe-shaped galley with Corian counters and all the obligatory appliances, including a cooktop with overhead exhaust, even boasts a finished pantry under the galley sole.

Our factory demo boat layout featured an island double berth on centerline in the forward cabin with gas shocks to assist in lifting the berth to access storage beneath. The guest cabin held over/under berths consisting of a twin on bottom and an upper single that pulls out from the wall. The master and guest cabin share the head with enclosed shower, while a day head (no shower) can be accessed from the companionway.

Throughout the interior you’ll find soft, buttery leather on all the furniture, along with beautiful fabrics and impeccable joiner work. The décor qualifies as nothing short of delicious.

From The Helm: 2003 Cabo 40 Express Sportfish

In the Northeast, passionate offshore fishermen basically have three choices when it comes to choosing the battlewagon that fits their respective needs – traditional downeast, center console, or sportfish. The waters and weather here rarely provide us with large stretches of perfect conditions, therefore we need boats that can handle what Mother Ocean throws at us and keep us comfortable while raising fish.

When it comes to the sportfish design, there are few manufacturers that can compare to the toughness and fishability of a Cabo Yacht. The birth of Cabo Yachts began, of all places, at high altitude, in the small desert town of Adelanto, California. The first Cabo was the 35 Flybridge, introduced in 1991, which made an instant splash. The 40 was introduced in 2002 and quickly proved to be the pinnacle of design for the pocket battlewagon.

Designed by Michael Peters, she was built from the keel up to be a fishing machine. The 40 is built to fish inshore one day and offshore the next. The shallow draft – 3.5 feet thanks to prop pockets – allows us to troll tube-and-worm rigs along inshore ledges and jig for stripers on the shoals without fear of polishing our propellers. At the same time her 28,000-pound displacement and 15.9-foot beam provides stability to fish the open ocean east of Chatham, Massachusetts in the fall or travel to the edge of the Continental Shelf to fish the canyons.

Performance and Fishability

Carrying 600 gallons of diesel and burning a modest 42 gallons per hour at 27 knots, the Mulberry Canyon has the speed and range to fish anywhere in New England. When trolling for tuna and marlin, at 4.5 knots for squid bars or 8 knots for fancy marlin lures, the boat’s wake presents clean lanes for bait and lure placement. The trolling valves also allow us to drop down slow enough to troll tube-and-worm rigs for stripers.

The MAN engines are smooth running and quiet when in operation. The hydraulic engine hatch makes it very easy to work around and clean the engines during routine maintenance. The pairing of the ZF transmissions and Glendinning controls provides split-second response when docking or backing down hard on a fish.

We employ double spreader Lee’s of Miami outriggers and center rigger for our offshore fishing spreads. The outriggers are perfectly matched to the boat and easy to take down for routine repairs and waxing.

The boat is the perfect fishing platform. The helm and cockpit total over 200 square feet, providing ample space for multiple-hook-up situations as well as extra coolers if needed. To the starboard helm deck area are six tackle drawers for all tackle-related storage needs. The cockpit is lined with seven swivel rod holders, the fighting chair and its rocket launcher accommodate another eight rods, each tower leg handles three rods, and the overhead rocket launcher has another six rod holders, so there is no shortage of rod storage in the back of the boat.

Under the deck to port and starboard are two large coffin boxes that can handle all the day’s catch plus ice, and the livewell in the transom is big enough to handle several dozen pogies or a few good bluefish, as well as doubling as a third fish hold. Additionally, the livewell is wired for light so finding baits at night is not a problem. Also in the cockpit are the bait freezer and rigging station to port and a drink box to starboard.

The side decks and bow rail allow safe passage to the bow for casting at breaking fish and for docking situations. The windlass and anchor are controlled either from the pulpit with electronic foot controls or from the helm with a toggle switch. The custom-molded hardtop easily accommodates the six-man life raft canister, cat 1 EPIRB, and radar. The buggy top in the tower boasts a comfortable seat for two, Furuno RD-30, and electronic controls. The tower/hardtops boast upper and midlevel molded deck lights. The lower level deck lights are LED and adjustable. Additionally the Cabo has two white underwater lights in the transom for nighttime fishing. The tuna door and gate in the transom swing outward and locks in place on the transom for hauling fish aboard and is plenty wide for accommodating large fish – we fit a 497-pound mako through with zero hang ups.

In addition to the life raft and EPIRB, the Mulberry Canyon carries a SOLAS life ring, survival suits, type 1 lifejackets, all necessary flares and distress equipment, an extensive first aid kit, and multiple fire extinguishers through the boat.

The interior of the Mulberry Canyon makes all guests feel right at home with her many amenities. Hot and cold AC provides the needed air temp for any season. The galley hosts a two-burner stovetop, microwave, two large food storage cabinets, and a refrigerator and freezer below the counter for all perishable goods. The salon area provides seating for five on the large sofa to starboard and a teak dinette table for those midnight canyon dinners. There is also a 19-inch flat screen television and DVD player hooked up to an eardrum-busting sound system. For the overnights, the salon sofa converts to an over-under bunk system for two. In the amidships bilge of the salon, there is additional storage for spare parts and four rods and reels. The full head offers a large shower and full sink top. The water heater provides ample hot water to get the whole crew cleaned and ready for dinner after a successful trip.

The master stateroom has a queen-size bed, three drawers and a cabinet underneath for storage, and two closets for hanging garments. To the port and starboard is rod storage for up to 10 rods – that brings the count to 14 rods in the interior! There is also a television in the state room and separate AC control.

Whether fishing hard in the canyons, flying a kite for bluefin tuna, jigging the current rips for stripers or cruising islands with family, the 40 Cabo Express is a great all-around platform, offering seaworthiness and speed all in one package. Plus, it provides all the necessary comfort and equipment to accommodate everyone’s needs, from hardcore fishermen to pampered guests.

Cabo 40 Flybridge Sportfisher

Two or so years ago on a wind-nourished day I put Cabo’s then-new 40 Express Sportfisher through its paces in conditions that had me rethinking career choices; the Cabo, however, had found its element and performed flawlessly-a point well recognized as it’s still a favorite of the meat-hunting offshore crowd. Now, this California builder introduces another 40—the Flybridge Sportfisher. Same old hull with an add-on Flybridge? No way; new hull, new boat. The Flybridge’s flatter aft section ending in a transom deadrise of 16.5 degrees makes it a modified-V rather than the deeper 20.5 degree cut of the Express; other subtler differences in strake design and bow flare promise an even more stable and drier platform. It’s also about 4,000 pounds heavier and a couple of knots slower at top end than the Express-like you’ll really care when you’re comfortably hauling that grander in through the transom door in a five-foot beam sea, while the rest of the fleet are trying to keep their lunches down.

That transom door, incidentally, is indicative of the design and workmanship throughout this boat. Flawlessly finished, perfectly balanced and sealed, it’s secured by a positive dog-type locking latch with a spring-loaded pin that prevents any hint of rattle-an issue with this breed. Move forward to the aft deck with its molded-in diamond-cut non-slip surface, where half-a-dozen anglers will not rub elbows while bellying up against a vinyl-padded coaming. A pair of in-deck fish boxes can be equipped with stainless refrigerated chill plates; foot-wide, lipped side decks and railings and handholds are situated so there’s no place where you can tread without something secure to lean against or grab. It makes safety feel like second nature.

In other words, this 40 is one properly laid out, top-of-the-line fishing machine. What else is new? Well, for starters, it’s a 40-footer in LOA and name only; there are touches here that you expect in boats pushing 50 feet and up. The engine room, for instance, is wired and plumbed to custom-boat standards with all-round access to the engines and commercial quality steel-plated decks. You’ll also enter via a walk-through door from the aft deck, big boat style; not the usual crawl-down saloon hatch. And that engine room carries 5’7 headroom at the companionway entrance and almost 5′ over the iron—unheard of in a 40-footer.

That bigger boat feel is carried right through into the accommodation, which on first glance makes you wonder if its prime mission is fishing or easy living. You’ll know it’s the former when you notice the well-camouflaged rod stowage in every nook and cranny, and guess it’s the latter at seeing the starboard guest cabin, which shares a spacious head and separate stall shower with the forward master and sports a traditional lower full-size berth and an upper pullout single. The 40’s generous 15’9 beam allows an athwart-ship’s bunk layout, rather than the usual fore and aft setup, which is ideal for snoozing while under way. Another bigger boat touch is the day head to port (also with shower). For those of us who think two heads in a 40-footer is superfluous, it can be converted into another (small) cabin.

The galley is a tight “U with just enough room for the cook to work and be within easy reach of the fixin’s; that snugness and the interior handholds (a real rarity in this breed) means your chef de cuisine can work in peace during that long canyon run. A hatch in the galley sole accesses a below- deck stowage space that’s roomier than some crew quarters that I’ve lived in. As a matter of fact, the interior finished or gel-coated stowage throughout will do justice to plenty of 50-footers.

The very un-fish-boat-like saloon offers enough seating and wandering room for your basic Manhattan apartment-sized cocktail party. The superbly joined and satin-varnished teak interior gives it a nautical flavor, just. Woe be to he who drifts in from aft with fish guts on his boots.

We ran the 40 from Northeast Yacht Sales’-Cabo’s northeast dealer-facility in Norwalk, Connecticut, into a short, steep, Long Island Sound chop which it effortlessly flattened. One tell-tale sign of the 40’s sensible hull design was the lack of rude gestures as we weaved through the fleet of bottom-fishers and meandering sailboats. Our wake, even when pushing out of the hole (with no bow-rise), was negligible. The Hynautic power-assisted steering is, literally, finger-tip easy at all speeds and maneuvers. You’ll drive this boat for hours without tiring; the custom-built J and J Marine molded fiberglass hardtop and full four- sided Stratglass enclosure contributes to that upside comfort level. Downside? The skipper has to move out of the way for shotgun to occupy the adjoining helm seat. Bottom line? Expect to see this 40 blasting out of an inlet near you—Cabo’s done it again.

 Performance:

The Cat C12 with it’s ACERT technology performs very well in the smokeless, quiet categories. This 40 Cabo Convertible Flybridge is equipped with these twin Caterpillar C12’s @ 700 hp topping out at 35 kts (2,345 rpm) and range of 302 nm. With a cruise in the 29kt range (2100rpm) the range improves dramatically to 375 nm. The Cabo 40 Flybridge receives high marks in her engineering, high end amenities, and modified-V hull, with prop pockets delivering a comfortable ride in even the toughest seas. The Cabo 40 offers one-finger steering with backing down moves allowing a very small amount of water through the transom door which drains instantly through large scuppers.
