The Wharf @ Republic of Singapore Yacht Club

The Republic of Singapore Yacht Club (RSYC) is the oldest yacht club in Asia. We were thrilled when a friend invited us to have dinner at a waterside restaurant of the club. The Wharf is open only to members of the RSYC and their guests. The casual restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating and serves seafood and other local and western food.

We were seated at the edge of the water with a great view of the marina. The venue and setting were beautiful and the evening started in the best possible way – with glasses of good champagne.

The Wharf has an ala carte menu but there is also a BBQ station where you can pick the food and ask the chefs to cook it for you. It also has a salad buffet bar.

We picked a few of the BBQ staples – otak, chicken wings, squids and satay. They were all nicely done and tasty. We also ordered a Penang Fried Kway Teow and Seafood Hor Fun from the menu. Both were disappointing. The Kway Teow was a liitle bland and the Hor Fun was missing the smoky wok hei flavour. Things picked up when the BBQ stingray and meaty cod fish were served. They might not look too great but were definitely very delicious.

The weather that evening was kind, the view was beautiful, the food and drinks were enjoyable and the company was great. The dinner at The Wharf of the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club was a wonderful waterside dining experience.

Yer landlubbers be knowin' by now that I'm a pirate. But a piratin' license be needed to sail ye straits o' Singapore. So to get back to sailin' the se'en seas, me was 'ere for a boatin' course. PPCDL (powered pleasure craft driving license), they call it. Bahh! 'tis marina be a pretty port, much more to me fancy than the previous one me ship was docked in at the port o' Punggol. Now pirates are usually a filthy lot, but not this corsair! Me was happy to see that it was clean and new-lookin', with a wonderful view of the sea. Arrrrrr! Lots of fancy ships be docked here too. Fancy quarters aplenty but ye need to be a member of their crew to stay arrrrr. The cook was also dishing out grub and rum for pieces o' eight. Gettin' here be a piece o' cake, it's at the West Coast and near to the main roads. Shiver me timbers! 'Tis a good choice for dockin' my pirate ship when it arrives. Yo ho ho!

Tucked away in the far recesses of West Coast Park near the port, the RSYC is a yacht club that's provided sea sport facilities and other amenities since 1826. I'm not a member: I came here to get on a boat. My friends organized a boat trip and our boat (not so much a yacht) was berthed here. It's a large, impressive facility. While I honestly can't compare it to other yacht clubs since my frame of reference on this matter is so narrow, I did like what I saw. They also have accommodation here in their Marina Lodge, which is available for members, their nominated guests and visiting yachtsmen only. There's also a large cafe with alfresco seating that serves up a buffet and beer.

Ku-Kai Izakaya – Hidden Izakaya in Admiralty!

Looking to enjoy the sunset by the waters while tucking into an icy cold beer and some bites? Ku-Kai Izakaya is the place to be! Despite being slightly inaccessible via public transport, it’s definitely worth a visit.

Most diners here opt for the al fresco dining option for the feels but indoor seating is always available for those who would rather be in the comfort of air-conditioning.

They boast a wide variety of food items and after spending some time flipping through the menu, I decided to start my meal off with the Kani Tama Gratin ($13). This Japanese gratin was made with straight cut macaroni that was firm yet chewy, unlike your typical potato gratin.

The slight sweetness from the bits of snow crab and fish, and saltiness of the bacon bits made for a right balance that hit the spot. The Béchamel sauce and cheese also gave the gratin the creaminess it needed. The layer of aburi mentaiko added a hint of spice and fishiness.

Even with this being a side, the portion was on the smaller side. That said, it was just enough to whet my appetite without being too jelak.

You can’t go to an Izakaya and not have skewers! The Kushiyaki Omakase 5 piece Skewer Set ($22) had the usual suspects – Chicken Thigh, Chicken Balls, Chicken Thigh with Leek, Pork Belly and Shiitake Mushroom. They also have a 7 piece set ($30).

I just have to put it out there that even as I’m writing this all I can think about is the perfectly grilled skewers.

The chicken was moist and tender, the pork belly extremely flavourful and the lightly salted mushroom still slightly juicy. Since they were grilled over a charcoal fire, there was a tinge of smoky flavour in the skewers that complemented the sauce slathered all over.

Finally, I had their Seafood Okonomiyaki ($19) which seemed to be rather popular. You can opt for the Chicken ($16) or Pork ($18) option if you haven’t had enough of their meat dishes. Unfortunately, their rendition of this Japanese pancake missed the mark for me.

The Okonomiyaki was slightly too cakey for my liking and the exterior wasn’t as crispy as I would’ve hoped for it to be. The seafood ingredients were also slightly lacking in terms of quantity, with only little bits of Tako and Prawn scattered around. The only saving grace would be the mountain of Bonito Flakes that topped the cabbage pancake.

I would just go straight for the skewers and other bites they offer and skip their Okonomiyaki.

This hidden gem is perfect for any occasion – a post-work chill session, a family meal or even a romantic evening date. Due to their limited seating, I would recommend making a reservation before heading down!

As a yacht club, the Chart Room offers a wealth of information for the avid mariner as well as the busy executive. Children are catered for in the Children's Room while the adults can try their hand at the ever-popular Jackpot Room or enjoy a game of American pool at The Mess.

Spacious guest rooms make for a pleasant retreat from the hustle of the city.
