Ice is a custom motor yacht launched in 2005 by Lurssen Yachts in Bremen, Germany and most recently refitted in 2008.

Lürssen has remained a family-run German shipyard since its inception in 1875 and is now in its fourth generation of private ownership. The company was founded by Friedrich Lürssen with a desire to create a leading shipyard in both quality and performance.

The inside of the yacht is decorated in a similar manner to the outside, with bright and airy elements that complement the ship’s overall style.

The interior is incredibly well made and polished in an exquisite manner across the whole piece.

The upholstery is made out of light cream fabrics and leather, with exotic wood accents added.

This exterior was done by Igor Tim Heywood and his team, who designed the outside of the ICE Yacht.

He wanted the ICE Yacht’s exterior to look like it had a lot of space, with deck passages that looked like they were from a movie.

The inside of the yacht is also big and luxurious, with a minimalist modern design. This is what Tim Heywood wanted when he made the ICE Yacht.

He was able to achieve what he set out to do. A few carefully chosen, high-quality materials are used throughout the whole yacht.

Toward the front of the main deck, there is a beautiful owner’s private outdoor lounge area.

The ICE has very low emissions, vibrations, and noise, as well as a very clean operation when it was delivered to its new owners.

To paraphrase the late Ella Fitzgerald, “It isn’t where you’ve been; it’s where you’re going that counts.” And when it comes to I-Nova , the 165-foot explorer yacht built for “uncompromising adventure,” that place is anywhere in the world. Now, it needs to find that place—or many places.

Built in 2013, the first of the Cosmo Explorer series was an owner’s labor of love who planned to see the remote corners of the world. Unfortunately, that never happened. Now up for sale, the yacht is searching for an owner who will make most use of her expedition hull.

I-Nova ‘s build team had a stellar international cast: A “Made in Italy” interior and exterior by Italian designer Cristiano Gatto. A Dutch collaboration between Vripack and Van Oossanen for the go-anywhere hull. The owner, planning to do an expedition series called the Cosmo Explorer, had the yacht built at Greek shipyard Megatechnica. Experts in the construction of commercial vessels, Megatechnica cut no corners during the five-year build process.

“The owner wanted to show what you could do outside of the Northern European shipyards,” Alex Banning, director at SuperYachtsMonaco, told Robb Report . “It was a project of his own doing, using best-in-class suppliers and builders.”

The result is an ice-class vessel equipped with some serious go-anywhere capabilities. Her vertical bow is hydrodynamically optimized to make her an efficient and long-range cruiser. The hull is reinforced with extra-thick steel plates specifically for polar expeditions. The propeller, sea chest, rudder, steering gear and seawater cooling systems meet ABS DO ice class requirements. And at 165 feet in length, though arguably compact for an explorer, her huge interior volume and shallow draft give her great versatility.

“When the first ideas and concepts emerged in 2009, I-Nova was right on the leading edge of the expedition sector of the market,” says Banning. “The owner wanted to keep it compact and practical, built like a hammer with as much of a silk glove as you can add, with all of those explorer capabilities.”

Included in that concept is what Banning refers to as the “opinion-dividing” rear deck built specifically to store a Fabio Buzzi 34 tender. The semi-enclosed rigid-hulled inflatable is a lasting testament to Buzzi, the owner’s friend, boat builder and racer who died last year in a speedboat crash. The Buzzi tender isn’t included in the sale, but it exemplifies the type of serious vessel that can be accommodated aboard  I-Nova , along with a 5-ton crane with a 30-foot outreach, a second tender and a full range of water toys. Only serious explorers would have space for that many tenders and toys.

“Some people think the Buzzi takes up too much space, but the owner thinks, ‘I’ve built a deck to carry my boat wherever’,” says Banning. “He likes driving it into all the tiny bays and swimming, diving and snorkeling from it. That’s what you can do with a boat deck like that.”

The owner’s original intention was to build an expedition series under the Cosmo Explorer brand. The concept would offer unrestricted cruising on vessels ranging from 148 to 210 feet.

A beach club and dedicated dive room are located on the lower deck. A large terrace for evening drinks is found on the bridge deck. The observation deck offers panoramic views, as well as a covered exterior gym and spa pool. But the wow factor is reserved for the award-winning interior, which includes an extensive use of 50,000-year-old Kauri wood and a split-level master suite that can be used as an observation lounge, homeschooling room or even a cinema.

“Gatto took the lead on the project alongside the owner, which is why the interior and exterior gel so well, and the interior has a quirky yet hugely flexible layout,” says Banning.

Powered by twin MTU 16V 2000 M70 engines I-Nova offers low engine noise, low vibration and bags of autonomy. As Banning says, “she’s got great DNA.”

Project Icecap has remained largely out of the spotlight until July this year when she was spotted in the open for the first time. The project was originally sold in March 2018 by Moran Yacht & Ship and the brokerage firm is project managing the construction. The yacht's exterior design comes from Norwegian studio Salt Ship Design and first images revealed a sharply inverted bow and large open aft deck fitted with tender cradles that can also function as a helipad. The steel and aluminium yacht features a total interior volume of more than 6,500GT and is expected to offer accommodation for up to 20 guests split across ten cabins. In the past, Moran also revealed that Project Icecap will be powered by a diesel-electric propulsion system and will feature state-of-the-art energy saving, power storage, heating and cooling systems.  Moran also indicated the yacht would have a helipad, beach club and three fixed terraces built into the stacked forward superstructure.  Project Icecap joins seven other superyachts measuring over 100 metres under construction at Lürssen, including the 146 metre Opera and the recently spotted Project Alibaba . Once delivered, Project Icecap will become of the world's largest superyachts , sitting somewhere around number 48 on the leaderboard. On Sunday, Aug. 25, local police force Lögreglan á Suðurlandi confirmed a group of 25 people from several nationalities had been visiting the Breidamerkurjökull glacier when an ice cave collapsed, per a Facebook post. "A large number of rescuers and responders have participated in the operation," the translated post read, adding that conditions were "difficult" and the search had been postponed until Monday morning. The post stated that one person who had been "seriously injured" was transported by helicopter to Landspitali University Hospital but was in stable condition, while another person was pronounced dead at the scene. A previous Facebook post confirmed police received the call shortly before 3 p.m. local time, and that the group had been with a tour guide. Landsbjorg.is "Others who were in the group are uninjured and are being taken to a mass aid center. Rescue operations are being carried out at the scene," the translated post stated. Local police chief Sveinn Kristján Rúnarsson said, per BBC News , "The conditions are very difficult on the ground." "It's hard to get equipment there... It's bad. Everything is being done by hand," Rúnarsson added. The outlet stated that Rúnarsson said while speaking on Icelandic TV that there were no signs to suggest that the tour should not have taken place on Sunday, and that the weather was "fair." "Ice cave tours happen almost the whole year," the officer said, according to the BBC. "These are experienced and powerful mountain guides who run these trips. It's always possible to be unlucky. I trust these people to assess the situation — when it's safe or not safe to go, and good work has been done there over time. This is a living land, so anything can happen," Rúnarsson shared. Per the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service (RÚV), a tourist, who did not want to be named, said the cave was about 3-5 meters deep. He said his group heard a crash approximately 10 minutes after they left, but they didn't see more about the incident until they returned to their hotel. The outlet added that rescuers have been "searching for the missing people by hand, as machinery cannot be used for this search," adding that "50 to 60" people were already searching for those missing just before 9:30 a.m. local time on Monday morning. What is known about the sinking of a luxury yacht off the coast of Sicily and those aboard PORTICELLO, Sicily — Specialist cave divers working in 12-minute underwater shifts were searching Tuesday for six missing passengers and crew, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, believed to be in the submerged wreck of a luxury yacht that was slammed by a powerful storm and swiftly sank off Sicily. The sleek yacht, named the Bayesian, was carrying a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers when it suddenly sank near the Mediterranean island that is part of Italy at about 4 a.m. on Monday. One body has been recovered and 15 people survived. Fire rescue officials have said the six believed to remain in the sailboat's hull will be considered missing until they are located in the wreckage. Here's what we know so far about the sinking and those who were on board. Advertisement What happened? Italian civil protection officials believe a sudden and fierce storm that battered the coast of Sicily in the early hours of Monday whipped up a waterspout in the exact spot where the 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian was moored. Karsten Borner, the captain of another yacht moored nearby, said he saw the Bayesian during the storm but when the wild weather passed it was gone and he saw only a red flare lighting the night sky, the Italian news agency ANSA and the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported. Borner and one of his crew boarded their tender and found a lifeboat carrying 15 people, some of them injured. They took them aboard their yacht and alerted the coast guard. Rescue authorities said the wreck was resting at a depth of 50 meters (163 feet) about a half mile offshore of the picturesque fishing village of Porticello. Who was on board? Among the missing is 59-year-old tech tycoon Mike Lynch, sometimes described as the British Bill Gates. Lynch was acquitted in June of all charges in a US fraud trial linked to the $11 billion sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011. Lynch still faced a potentially huge bill stemming from a civil case in London that HP mostly won during 2022. Damages haven’t been determined in that case, but HP is seeking $4 billion. Lynch made more than $800 million from the Autonomy sale. A Cambridge-educated mathematician, Lynch made his name running Autonomy, which made a search engine that could pore through emails and other internal business documents to help companies find vital information more quickly. Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter Hannah was reportedly among the missing. His wife, Angela Bacares, and 14 other people survived. Among others still missing Tuesday, according to the civil protection agency, were one of Lynch’s US lawyers, Christopher Morvillo of Clifford Chance, and Morvillo’s wife, Neda. Morvillo was regarded as an elite defense lawyer and was also a federal prosecutor in New York after 9/11. Also missing was Jonathan Bloomer, the non-executive chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife, Judy. He is the former head of the Autonomy audit committee and testified for the defense at Lynch’s trial. Bloomer was also chair of the Hiscox Group, an insurer that does business on the Lloyd’s of London market. “We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event,” Hiscox CEO Aki Hussain said in a statement. Among the survivors was Charlotte Golunski, who said she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to grab her and hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, ANSA reported. The father, identified by ANSA as James Emslie, also survived. The Dutch foreign ministry said a Dutch man survived. The ministry, citing privacy, did not release his identity. One body was recovered on Monday, identified as the on-board chef. What is the Bayesian? The Bayesian was a luxury yacht built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Nav. It was known for its single 75-meter (246-feet) aluminum mast — one of the world’s tallest. Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week. Its registered owner is listed as Revtom Ltd., based on the Isle of Man, according to online maritime database Equasis. Lynch’s wife is listed as Revtom’s sole owner, according to corporate registration documents from the Isle of Man. The yacht's name is an apparent reference to “Bayesian inference,” one of the two main approaches to statistical machine learning and the one that was used by Autonomy. What is a waterspout? Waterspouts are tornadoes that form over water and can happen when a storm moves across warm water. According to the US National Ocean Service, there are two types of waterspouts — fair-weather and tornadic. Tornadic waterspouts “have the same characteristics as a land tornado. They are associated with severe thunderstorms, and are often accompanied by high winds and seas, large hail, and frequent dangerous lightning,” the service says on its website. While scientists haven't attributed the specific event to climate change, average monthly surface temperatures have been at record highs for months. Hotter air can hold more moisture, making heavier storms more likely. Sicily has been baking under intense heat this summer, and the United Nations’ panel of climate change experts notes the Mediterranean Sea is particularly vulnerable to climate change, with warming rates roughly 20 percent higher than the global average. How rare is it for a huge sailboat like this to capsize? Experts say it is extraordinarily rare for a luxury sailboat of this size to capsize due to weather events. “This just doesn’t happen. You know, boats sink because things like keels fall off, or they run aground and breach the hull ... whereas just from a weather angle, a boat that big being pushed over on its side is absolutely extraordinary,” said Skip Novak, a lifelong sailor who has taken part in multiple round the world yacht races and written books about sailing. Novak said he believed that strong gusts likely pushed the yacht over 90 degrees to its side, and the vessel did not recover because of the weight of the huge mast and because it was anchored. He suggested that internal doors were likely not closed, and water quickly poured in to sink the vessel. “When you’re at anchor, even if it’s blowing with a storm in the Mediterranean, you rarely shut the whole boat down because nobody expects something like this to happen," Novak told The Associated Press. “So if the boat wasn’t completely watertight at the deck, you’d have flooding going in.
