Boat Test: 2024 Monterey Elite 30

  • By Randy Vance
  • August 28, 2024

Monterey Elite 30 running offshore

Nothing calls for change like an election year, and at this writing, Monterey is offering a bold new candidate for performance- and luxury-minded boating enthusiasts. We don’t use the word “unique” casually in referring to this sleek boat with sports-car flavors and cutting-edge European style—there’s nothing like it on the water.

The Elite 30’s appeal for votes begins with its square stem and sleek, tucked-to-the-stem, custom, polished stainless-steel anchor, a fresh look at a center helm, and a broad hardtop that straddles the cockpit port to starboard.

Monterey Elite 30 helm

We’ve seen square-stem boats in the US before, and they can have an alarming gift for stabbing into the next wave, spraying water all over the cockpit. In hard turns, doubling back over rolling wakes, we saw none of that bad behavior. Though the stem brings up the foreword freeboard in a near-vertical angle to the water, that freeboard doesn’t begin until the hull beneath it flares out broadly to keep the stem comfortably above the seas. The 21-degree hull deadrise at the transom cleaves chop for a comfortable ride without allowing it to roll excessively with shifting crewmembers, broad seas or crisp turns. The power of dual Mercury 250 hp V-8 outboards offers exciting acceleration—3.2 seconds to plane and 5.6 seconds to 30 mph. Our top speed was over 53 mph, and the joy of having all this in your throttle hand comes not just from the raw power, but also the unique centered helm that you’ll need to see to believe.

Monterey Elite 30 bow seating

Interior and Accessories

Helm styling is straight out of a performance sports car, with a pair of bucket seats separated by a center console that positions the throttle levers as comfortably as an eight-speed racing shifter and makes the joystick equally reachable. In top-level race boats, the throttle is so arranged as one-half the skippering crew manages the wheel while the throttle man reacts to the seas by varying rpm and 150 mph speeds. You could employ a throttle man in this vessel just for fun if you wish, but even at its maximum throttle speed, it handles like a charm, thrilling crewmembers while protecting them from unexpected changes to direction and acceleration.

Monterey Elite 30 cockpit console

The next remarkable plank to this compelling candidate’s platform is the design of the hardtop and windshield. Mention center console and hardtop, and you’ll picture enormous stanchions springing from the console fore and aft of the helm, blocking sight lines. The top may extend only halfway to the gunwales from the helm perimeter, leaving much unprotected from the sun. Not here. The hardtop rests on highly styled and brilliantly sturdy supports affixed to the gunwales, and it extends well forward of the racily raked windshield and aft over the lounge and bar back-to-back with the helm bucket seats. The safety-glass windshield is full width of the helm and bucket seats, but the windshield stops at the helm sides, allowing fresh air (and passengers) to pass through the cockpit on port or starboard passageways, refreshing us on our test day’s 95-degree, 95-percent-humidity summer swelter. The arrangement is a moderate blend of the extremes of a dual-console windshield and a typical fishing center console. Nothing better than a well-balanced candidate!

Monterey Elite 30 aft seating

We scoured the marketplace for a similar deck and helm plan to no avail, but the Four Winns H9 at a length overall of 29 feet, 11 inches brings a challenger with that vertical-stem style and with a comfortable standard bowrider setup ($343,025 base price with test power and hardtop). It too boasts a glass cockpit, and the hardtop lowers and raises on concealed ram screws to shrink storage height and can even be dropped down for more rain protection while running from a storm. Four Winns’ new designs from across the pond are the result of the company’s purchase by Groupe Beneteau, the world’s largest boat manufacturer.

Monterey Elite 30 sunpad

Forward of the Monterey Elite’s windshield is another lounge that swings on hinges to reveal a comfortable changing room with a head and freshwater outlet that competes well with the Four Winns H9. There’s a ton of storage in drawers and cabinets on the Elite. While neither offers stand-up headroom, it’s deep enough aboard the Elite for comfortable movement. Door closed, the Elite’s forward lounge completes a triangular seating area with bow seats and padded coamings to allow crew to relax and chat.

Read Next: Monterey 255 SS OB

Monterey Elite 30 head

Aft of the helm is the back-to-back lounge that I mentioned earlier. Nestled up to it is a refreshment bar with sink and fresh water. There are large coolers beneath the lounge. This faces a large lounge astern, giving up to six people face-to-face conversation in comfortable seating. A transom door leads to a spacious swim platform. The seatbacks rock forward, allowing boaters to face the water over the transom, or lay the seatbacks down for a comfortable sun lounge.

In a market filled with big, strong dayboat candidates, the Elite 30 stands out on the campaign trail. It may well emerge as the new sheriff in town.

Crash involving boat trailer in Yarmouth kills 14-year-old, injures 2 others

A teenager is dead and two others are injured after an SUV struck a boat trailer that was on the side of a road in Yarmouth early Friday afternoon.

Yarmouth police said in a statement that its department received multiple 911 calls reporting a person pinned between a boat and the truck that was towing it on North Main Street shortly after 1 p.m.

The truck, police said, had pulled to the side of the road because of a broken axle. Passengers were trying to fix it when a Cadillac SUV traveling south on the street struck the boat trailer from behind. As a result, the boat trailer hit the people working on the axle, police said.

The crash killed a 14-year-old boy and two other people were taken to Cape Cod Hospital. The conditions of the two people who were injured were unknown Friday.

The driver of the Cadillac, authorities said, remained on the scene and cooperated with the investigation, which is ongoing. No names were released Friday.

This breaking news story will be updated if more information becomes available.

Starlight 30

Starlight 30 is a 29 ′ 2 ″ / 8.9 m monohull sailboat designed by Jack Laurent Giles and Michael Pocock and built by Blue Water Yachts Ltd. (UK) between 1976 and 1980.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Broker's Comments

Good Starlight 30's are few and far between, this is a good example of this popular cruiser/racer, she has been well maintained and has an extensive sail wardrobe.

The trailer is not included in the price but maybe available via separate negotiation, and can be used to deliver the boat in the UK, in addition if a buyer wishes to work on the boat in situ electricity can be provided by the owner. Well worth a viewing.

I came across a Starlight 30, which is not a Sadler boat, but has been manufactured by an obscure company called "Blue Water Yachts Limited". Other than in sailboatdata.com, where the model exists, I could not find any information about it. The one I found is beautifully restored and seems good value for money, but without anything known about it I could be looking and a lousy boat. Any inputs?

They're a Mike Pocock designed IOR 1/2 tonner from the late 70s. Mike had a really good reputation and wasn't as 'radical' as the more competitive raceboat designers of that era. So like the Westerly GK29 he also designed, they were more wholesome designs with better seaworthiness than their era might suggest. Mike continued to refine this sort of powerful cruiser racer and there are lots of books that detail him and his wife's voyages in their own 38 footer called Blackjack. You'll see from those that first and foremost he was a sailor rather then just a designer.

Concerto

When the original design for the Starlight 30 designed by Michael Pocock was published in Yachting World, my father contacted him to see if we could buy a set of plans. My brother's father in law to be, decided to join us. We ended up building a racing version and a cruising version using a male mould from the plans. Whilst we were building them someone from the Channel Isles decided to build a production version. Michael Pocock told us the builder was working in old chicken sheds. I do not know if they did the layup or used an outside contractor. Not sure how many production versions they made, but I know there is one I see on the River Medway and pass it every time I go out sailing. As a boat it was a powerful design tp the International Offshore Racing Rule as a half tonner. Too heavy compared to other half tonners of this period. No bad vices whilst sailing. I cannot comment on the production version, but I doubt if it was any different. I presume this is the one you are looking at. It looks tidy, but with a major refit in 2013, I would want to know when the internal photos were taken. Knowing you want to sail in the Med, it comes with a bimini and cockpit cushions. This should be an added bonus for you. SonicArmin said: Thanks. Yes, that is the boat. She is a beauty, I have to say. The internal rebuild is obviously not done from solid wood, could be cheap laminate that disintegrates at the first contact with water. The broker said the pics are recent, so perhaps there is hope. I do wonder however how I can find out if the hull and deck are done well, especially since the deck was raised above the companion way to create more headroom. That could create weak points, on top of the initial build quality. Chicken shed does not sound encouraging... . I do want to sail offshore, so a strong hull and deck are important to me. There is very little info about this design out there. She appears a design on the threshold between the old, seakindly designs and the modern designs putting emphasis on speed and maneuverability. Would she be able to heave to properly? She looks relatively modern in the shape of her underbody. Quite flat, smallish keel and spade rudder. The old model Bavaria 30 which looks a bit the same under the waterline can not heave to, for example. And then there is the pounding when going into the wind against a bit of wave. How would she (and the crew) take a few days of beating into the wind?

If heaving to, and beating to windward for days on end is your priority, then you would probably be better off looking at an IOR 1/2 Tonner from the early 70s. These are also known as the RORC / CCA style boats that were the founders of the IOR rule. There's lots around and if looking for 'cheap' in the UK, then the SHE 31/ Delta 94, Holman and Pye designed Hustler 30 or Contessa 32 would make the list. But these are old boats - and rebuild candidates will take a lot of money and time. So the alternative is to wind the clock forward and look at pure cruising designs that largely escaped the influence of the racing rules. The Vancouver 32 /34 and the Victoria 30 / 34 would be examples. But well sorted versions of these are considerably more money.
