Draft of Raven 31?

Looking at buying a Raven 31 as I need a reasonably shallow boat to get over a riverbar.

Various sites have the draft at 1.52m, 1.6m and 1.67m. The owners group site has both 1.52m and 1.67m. There are no mentions of keel options.

I don't want to have to pay for a haul to find out the boat is deeper draft than expected.

Can anyone confirm the draft of a Raven 31?

15cm difference in draft is less than the depth difference between tides at the same phase.  It should be immaterial to your choice.

For instance, Matiatia today will be 0.28m above datum @ low tide.  By Saturday, it's 0.57m.  30cm difference.  Add some wave motion and 15cm means next to nothing - waiting 20 minutes perhaps.

My raven 31 was 1.52. Measured on cradle

Thank you scarecrow. Did you enjoy your 31? I am moving to a family cruiser after a Elliott 7.4

Have you thought about a Lotus 9.2. Just as much volume and a little more performance.

Hi ECS, Loved the Raven. Stern is outstanding as love sailing, fishing Diving etc. Always felt  safe, even took her round the North Island via the Three Kings. Only change would be a bigger rig as she is a big volume boat and sticky in the light.

Talking of the rig, do you know the rig height (air draft). I occasionally tuck under a 12m MHWS bridge. The Raven is slightly too tall.

The Lotus 9.2 is nice but the family liked the Raven 31 more.

It matters if past the bar its only 1.5-2m deep in the anchoring area in the river behind. 1.52m is at the limit

Draft can be reduced by unloading all the extra crap that inevitably build up onboard!

Yeah I get that.  We draw 1.7 and our river entrance is 0.8 datum at its shallowest point.

My point still stands.  If 15cm in draft is to o close for comfort and leaves you no margin  for error, you have a problem with either keel.

Nice boat though!  I'd be happy in one.  Lots of room, safe, look ok.   Might be a bit slow but it's for cruising not racing and so again the performance difference is marginal.

good luck with your decision-making.

I'd think anything of that size would be tight. The raven is already a "modest" rig.

Ravens problem wasnt height of rig but it being a true 3/4 rig. Combine this with a furler and a little small up front. However does make it a great family boat. Forard berth and heads are huge, great locker that fits EVERYTHING and a scoop thats big enough to store a 2.5m inflatable sideways. Off the wind in any real wind, rocky steady with speeds 8-10knots consistent. Upwind a bit low and slow. If you point up too high goes sideways so trim for not quiet eased and point a little low..VMG then OK  My 5 cents worth

Raven 31 is a 31 ′ 0 ″ / 9.5 m monohull sailboat designed by Owen Woolley and built by Lotus Yachts/NZ Yachts (NZ) starting in 1983.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Excellent 5 night charter on a  Raven   31  “We thoroughly enjoyed our charter with Great Escapes. Communications from our initial enquiry to the end – were handled perfectly. The handover from Bill and Julie was very professional. The boat itself had clearly had a lot of money lavished on it: new fully battened main, new genoa, new engine. We sail a more modern boat back in Europe – but the Raven  has a great solid quality, with nice woodwork in the main saloon. The forecabin in particular is very impressive for a  31 foot boat. As for the cruising ground, it is hard to imagine anywhere with a greater number of sheltered anchorages – most with beautiful walks ashore. We walked to Cape Brett from Deep Water Cove, and also enjoyed walking around Moturua and Urupukapuka Islands and others.”

Details for your charter

  • Your charter commences 9.30am on day one and concludes at 4.00pm on the last day.
  • Minimum hire: early season 3 days, peak 6 days, summer 4 days, late season 3 days.
  • Charters of seven days or more have a 10% discount applied to the daily rate.
  • Dinghy and oars standard tender, RIB and outboard on request.
  • For bareboat charter, the skipper must have a sound knowledge of sailing and boat handling. Ideally a recreational sailing qualification and/or significant experience in a similar vessel. We provide a comprehensive vessel safety briefing and an overview of navigation in the Bay of Islands, with suggested highlights before you cast off.
  • If it has been a while since you last sailed, if you haven’t sailed a similar boat, or your crew has limited experience we recommend an instructor for the first day.  Your instructor will join you at the dock on the morning of departure, they can recap sailing skills, boat handling, anchoring, navigation and weather interpretation in the Bay of Islands and will share with you some of their favourite spots to anchor.  Your instructor will also cover VHF use and retrieval of a person overboard.  The instructor departs around 3.00pm, plenty of time for you to get to a lovely anchorage for your first night.

Re: New Raven owner. I can tell you that they where made in Martinsville, VA and the company is no longer in business. I believe they closed down around 1991. They are some very well made boats and you should not have any problems. I had a buddy of mine that worked there and has told me some of the high tolerances they had in the building process.

Re: New Raven owner. Mine is a 1991, and looks identical to rucradio's boat. I also have the 3.0 Mercruiser engine (only about 250 hours), and she has treated me well, as she has always gotten me home from wherever we wander. I keep her docked in Oneida Lake, NY all summer, and wander the Erie Canal system with her, up to the St Lawrence Seaway. I'd like to take her on a journey through the Great Lakes when I retire in a year or so.

Re: New Raven owner. To be honest, after doing a restore (deck/transom/stringers) and reading up on other manufacturers on iBoats, I believe Raven boats to be pretty well built. I just wish there was more of an "official" history of these things available online.

Re: New Raven owner. My son talked me into selling him my Aqua Sport and in the deal he gave me his Raven Admiral 195cc that he bought at an auction awhile back. I had never heard of the Raven before and So I looked up the haul ID on the coast guard list and found out about the company and where they are located.I have had the boat for about a month and working in the cold weather have replaced the manifold, rebuilt the carb, got radio and fish finder working, built a new motor box, repaired the running light, etc .etc. etc.. The bunks in the cuddy cabin need recovering, that comes later. The haul seems to be in good condition. All this boat needs is some TLC and more work. The hatch is leaking so that is on the list also. In between the repair work I completed the Va. safe Boating course. I didn't have to that until 2016 but at my age, 75, I thought it may be a good idea. I plane to do a lot more boating and hope to have a good safe one to do it in. Good luck every body. Hal, Va. Beach, Va.

Re: New Raven owner. Like you Larry I am still trying to fine out some things about the Raven boat also. My boat has the merc cruiser 140 engine that runs great, I don't have any idea how much the raven gas tank holds so maybe some one can give me that info. Today I was using the high speed buffer to compound the haul and I made the mistake of getting to close to the fish finder cable , you guess it, now I need a new transducer and cable, 71 dollars. Lesson learned, stay away form any thing that will rap around the buffer wheel. Good luck every body.

Re: New Raven owner. It's great to find this forum for Raven owners. A friend of mine gave me his 1989 2100CC because he has become ill and no longer able to use it. It has the Mercruiser 3.0 and Alpha1 drive. Engine cranks on 1st try every time. I have started cleaning some of the oxidation from the hull and will soon start replacing the deck. My friend says it has been a great boat for him. He frequently took it out 10 miles or more off the coast of Virginia Beach. I have not had it in the water yet but hope to have it ready by April.

  • Mar 16, 2010

Re: New Raven owner. I have been working on the 1990 Raven now for two and a half months and have got a lot done. The bunks in the cabin have been recovered, all the cleats replaced, installed new hand rails, new manifold, rebuilt carburetor, new steering, new running lights, new engine cover, new rear seats, replaced rotten wood and am in the process recovering side panels. The 3.0 engine runs good and the out drive has been inspected and found good. I changed the gear lubrication in the lower unit. I changed the oil and all filters . Next I need to fix the leaking hatch cover. Standing on the deck of this boat is not a good idea out in the Chesapeake bay to anchor so I need to come up with a way to do that. , so hi ho hi ho back to work to work I go.

Re: New Raven owner. Much like Harroll, I spend most of last season restoring my Raven. New transom, stringers, and floor. As mine was a good price on Craigslist, I really had no idea at the time I bought it (Aug. 2008) of how rare Raven boats really are. I've come a long way with the help of iBoats in the past 2 years. Although I still don't know much about Raven Boatworks, I feel these are well constructed boats. The previous owners abused the hell out of her for many years and she still remained trouble-free for 20+ years until I got into her. Structurally both hull and deck glass were thicker than 1/4" which, IMHO, is pretty thick. The design of the hull cuts thru waves excellent as well. The craft is stable even in rough water. Being that I have the 4 cyl. Volvo, I get excellent fuel economy. The cuddy is roomy enough to sleep 2 very comfortably. All in all a great boat. I just wish there was a better web resource for us Raven owners.

Review of IW 31

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat is equipped with 2 cabins, 5 berths, a galley and toilet facility.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

Unknown keel type

The keel is made of iron. Many people prefer lead keel in favour of iron. The main argument is that lead is much heavier than iron and a lead keel can therefore be made smaller which again result in less wet surface, i.e. less drag. In fact iron is quite heavy, just 30% less heavy than lead, so the advantage of a lead keel is often overstated.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.75 - 1.85 meter (5.74 - 6.04 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

IW 31 is typically equipped with an inboard Volvo Penta MD1B diesel engine at 10 hp (7 kW). Calculated max speed is about 3.9 knots

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for IW 31 is 1.77, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.3 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for IW 31 is about 120 kg/cm, alternatively 676 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 120 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 676 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

What is Relative Speed Performance?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 22m 2 (236 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

  2. Review of Raven 31

The Raven 31 is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel. The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.67 - 1.77 meter (5.48 - 5.78 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

I dont want to have to pay for a haul to find out the boat is deep...

S# first appeared (that we know of) in TellTales, April 1988, "On a Scale of One to Ten" by A.P. Brooks . The equation incorporates SA/Disp (100% fore triangle) and Disp/length ratios to create a guide to probable boat performance vs. other boats of comparable size. For boats of the same length, generally the higher the S#, the lower the PHRF.

  14. New Raven owner.

Re: New Raven owner. I can say the one I had was pretty solid for being almost 20 years old. I traded it for a smaller 1993 Rinker Captiva 170 open bow with a 90 HP Force outboard about a month ago. I really liked the way the Raven felt on the water but found the smaller open bow fits better with my family. 8.
