In short order the sales team of Sean Fenniman and Nicole Drost convinced me Allied Marine was the best choice over all other brokers. Their attention to detail and prompt service outmatches their competition. They literally outworked other brokers and secured me as a loyal customer. What a relief to receive paperwork quickly and as promised. Would not hesitate to recommend this duo. ~Brian K. PROFESSIONAL AND GREAT ATTENTION TO DETAIL! I have purchased two boats from Sean Fenniman and Allied Marine in Stuart, FL. Both experiences were handled professionally and with great attention to detail. Making such a large purchase is stressful, however, this team understands those stresses and allows the purchaser to go through the process in their time, without any pressure or judgement. I give this group the highest recommendation. They have made my family's dream come true - twice! ~William W. 7 TRANSACTIONS (BUY AND SELL) IN THE PAST 7 YEARS ON BOATS WITH THEM! I can't say enough about these people. I've had 7 transactions (buy and sell) in the past 7 years on boats with them. Every promise made was kept with special help like ... Sean Fenniman stayed up most of the night once working with a mechanic to address some survey issues that arose last minute to save the sale that would have fallen apart... Sean swapped a Garmin from his personal boat for my new faulty one so I could start my trip north once ... he personally cleaned a boat prior to a showing due to the vendor canceling the last minute. His Wife Tina helped me totally renovate 2 yachts, coordinating countless vendors. Tina offered to run to the registry in Florida for me when I was having an issue renewing online and followed up after to make sure I was okay. Nicole Brova Drost provided painless closings each time, chasing down issues before I even heard about them. I have too many examples to share here. They are without a doubt ... "super stars" ~William V. ATTENTION TO DETAIL AND PROFESSIONALISM MADE THE DEAL COME TOGETHER EASILY! I was in the market for a larger Sportfish and called Peter for additional information on his listing. Although the listed boat was under contract, Peter found one a little better equipped in the same price range. Sensing we should move quickly, Peter suggested we board right-away. We had only worked (together) a short while but Peter's understanding of the build, attention to detail and professionalism made the deal come together easily. We worked with the seller directly and carved out a deal during the showing that made sense. ~Pam E. FUN PROJECT From day one, Peter provided us with a great experience. Knowledge, foresight, comrade, and professionalism all made for a fun project acquiring our larger boat. At the onset of our relationship and vessel search, Peter stated, "This is a marathon not a sprint." With his help we won the race. Peter Kurki and Allied Marine made for an enjoyable experience purchasing our new vessel. We love our new boat. ~ Fred - Atlanta, Georgia VISITED VESSELS BEFORE ENDORSING Living in North Carolina we did not have direct access to the inventory of listings found in South Florida. Peter maintained a vigil on vessels he thought we would like in the South Florida market, visiting them for us before endorsing. Peter's knowledge and understanding of manufacturers, systems and performance made for a comfortable purchase. After a life-changing event, Peter then subsequently represented our vessel for sale and found us the buyer that was "meant to be." We had a pleasurable experience with Peter Kurki and Allied Marine, we would recommend to anyone who is in the market for a new or pre-owned vessel. ~ Lynn and Susan, Wilmington, North Carolina DOCKED THE BOAT AT MY HOME My career in law enforcement with Miami/Dade Marine Patrol provided me with many years of enjoyment on the water. When it was time to purchase my personal vessel I had the great pleasure of meeting Peter through social connections. We subsequently had a great time finding the vessel that suits me best. We saw a bunch of listings and worked with a strategy and plan to secure what was best. Peter returned all my calls, was always present and accounted for through the survey and closing. Peter then helped me personally to bring the boat home, docking her for the initial time. From beginning discussions of ownership to securing the lines on my home dock, Peter Kurki was an asset. Knowledgeable on boats and procedures and yachting culture, I felt comfortable with all his work. Peter is awesome, I'm confident people don't know how much heart he puts into making his clients happy! ~ Kevin D. - Stuart, Florida ATTENTION TO DETAIL I was in the market for a larger Sportfish and called Peter for additional information on his listing. Although the listed boat was under contract, Peter found one a little better equipped in the same price range. Web design by icreateyoursite.comYacht insurance provider OMAC is hull carrier for sunken yacht in Sicily, sources sayRescue boats return to Porticello harbor near Palermo, after they found two bodies, on Aug. 21, two days after the British-flagged luxury yacht Bayesian sank. ALBERTO PIZZOLI/AFP/Getty Images Yacht insurance provider OMAC is the carrier on the hull for the Bayesian, a 56-metre-long (184-ft) sailboat, that was hit by a ferocious storm on Monday, sinking off the northern coast of Sicily, two sources with knowledge of the matter said. The syndicates providing insurance include Travelers Companies Inc, Navium Marine and Convex, while British Marine is the protection and indemnity (P&I) insurance provider, the sources said. Reuters could not ascertain the value of the yacht or what the value of potential claims could be. Ships typically have P&I insurance, which covers third-party liability claims including environmental damage and injury. Separate hull and machinery policies cover vessels against physical damage. Convex declined to comment, while OMAC, Travelers, Navium and British Marine did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment. The British-flagged superyacht was carrying 22 people and anchored off the port of Porticello when it was hit by a fierce, pre-dawn storm on Monday. Fifteen people managed to escape the yacht before it capsized. Four bodies were found on Wednesday aboard the sunken wreck of the yacht belonging to the wife of British tech magnate Mike Lynch, sources close to the rescue operation told Reuters. The global yacht insurance market has faced significant challenges in recent years, largely due to natural disasters like Hurricane Maria in 2017 and Hurricane Ian in 2022, which devastated numerous charter bases and hundreds of yachts. In response, insurers have increased rates and reevaluated their guidelines and risk appetite. Insured losses in the market have mostly stemmed from hurricanes, severe storms, floods, and other weather events in North America, the Caribbean, and Europe, according to a report by broker Marsh. Sky News looks at what we know about the tragedy. News reporter @samuelosborne93 Wednesday 21 August 2024 19:01, UK Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player Six bodies have been found after a superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily. Twenty-two people were on board the vessel named Bayesian when it got into difficulty in the early hours of Monday, with 15 people rescued. Here's what we know about the sinking of the luxury vessel so far. Follow latest updates on the superyacht sinking What might have caused the sinking? The British-flagged luxury vessel, named the Bayesian, capsized at around 4.30am local time on Monday morning off Palermo, according to ship-tracking site Marine Traffic. It sank in a matter of minutes with 22 people on board, 12 passengers and a crew of 10, according to the Italian coastguard. Waterspouts, essentially tornados which form over water, were seen as powerful winds battered the area overnight, local media said. The yacht may have sunk faster with all the doors open due to the hot weather, Sailing Today magazine editor Sam Jefferson has said. "I imagine all the doors were open because it was hot, so there were enough hatches and doors open that it filled with water very quickly and sank like that," he said. Official pictures show air conditioning units in several of the rooms, however, which could counter the suggestion open windows caused the vessel to sink faster. The huge mast is also likely to have played a role, he added. What are waterspouts? Waterspouts typically occur during thunderstorms and can develop very rapidly, within minutes. Their spin generally reaches wind speeds between 75-200mph, but can reach as high as 300mph. They can travel at about 10-20mph typically but can reach greater speeds, making them difficult to avoid - especially in something as slow-moving as a yacht. Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, called the reports of a tornado or waterspout "rare" and "quite alarming". "The vessel was at anchor in a recognised anchorage," Mr Schanck said. "Depending on wind direction and the state of the sea, this informs the captain whether it is a safe area to anchor or not. There was nothing that was too concerning, for my eye. All in all, the captain used the information they had to make a safe call." Who owns the yacht? British tech tycoon Mike Lynch was among those missing, along with his 18-year-old daughter Hannah. His wife Angela Bacares was rescued. Mr Lynch, 59, is known as the " British Bill Gates " and has been in the headlines in recent months over a high-profile fraud case. In June, a US jury cleared him of all charges, which were related to the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard (HP). The yacht trip is believed to have been a celebration of the end of Mr Lynch's legal troubles. HP accused him of deliberately overstating the value of the company before it was acquired by the American tech giant. Mr Lynch was extradited to the US to face trial in May last year and spent 13 months under house arrest in San Francisco as he awaited trial on 17 charges of conspiracy and wire fraud brought by the US Department of Justice - which were later reduced to 15 charges. He always denied any wrongdoing and was acquitted. Read more: Lynch's co-defendant dies days before yacht sinking Who was on board when the boat sank? The passengers were largely British and American, the Italian coastguard said. Crew members were from New Zealand, South Africa, and Canada. Charlotte Golunski was among the Britons rescued. Her LinkedIn profile says she is a partner at Mr Lynch's firm Invoke Capital and has worked there since 2012. Speaking after the ordeal, Ms Golunski told Italian media that she lost her daughter Sofia for "two seconds" amid the "fury" of the sea but was able to retrieve her. She said she held the infant above the waves until the lifeboat was ready. "Many people screamed. Luckily the lifeboat inflated and 11 of us were able to get on board," she told ANSA. The girl's father James Emsley also survived, according to Sicily's civil protection agency. Also on board were Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of investment bank Morgan Stanley, his wife Judy Bloomer, a top US lawyer Chris Morvillo, who worked on Mr Lynch's criminal case, and his wife Neda Morvillo. They were all reported as missing. The yacht's captain James Calfield survived, along with South African crew members Leah Randall and Katja Chicken. Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan chef who was working on the boat, has been found dead, the Italian Coastguard has confirmed to Sky News. During rescue efforts, divers saw "corpses through the portholes" of the wreck as they recovered the body of a man at a depth of 50m (164ft), according to Salvo Cocina, the head of the Civil Protection of Sicily. What do we know about the vessel? The Bayesian is owned by a company controlled by the wife of Mr Lynch. It was known for its unusual 72.3m (246ft) single mast - one of the world's tallest made of aluminium - and shared its name with the statistical method Mr Lynch's Autonomy software was based on. It was built by Italian company Perini Navi in 2008 and last refitted in 2020. It was listed for rent for up to €195,000 (£166,000) a week, according to online charter sites. The luxury vessel , which was managed by yachting company Camper & Nicholsons, can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites. It won a string of awards for its design, according to online specialist yacht sites. Mr Schanck said the vessel would have been equipped with "high standard" life-saving appliances and radio communications. He added the yacht would have met all international standards and UK maritime coastguard agency regulations before its voyage. Keep up with all the latest news from the UK and around the world by following Sky News The boat left the Sicilian port of Milazzo on 14 August and was last tracked east of Palermo on Sunday evening, with a navigation status of "at anchor", according to vessel tracking site VesselFinder. The Bayesian previously travelled to other parts of Sicily before its last sighting off the coast of the port of Porticello. On Sunday, the boat was seen off the coast of Cefalu before it travelled towards Porticello, MarineTraffic data shows. In the days before, the yacht travelled around four of the Aeolian islands, just north of Sicily. It was previously named Salute, or "health" in Italian, when it flew under a Dutch flag. Its minimalist interior featured light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions on charter sites. A rare and unexpected “black swan” weather event may have led to the Bayesian superyacht’s speedy demise , maritime experts claim. The spontaneous formation of a tornado-like waterspout would have given the 22 passengers and crew aboard the luxury vessel little to no time to react to the violent storm Monday before the ship capsized and sank, killing one and leaving six others missing. Marine experts believe the large waterspout — a slim column of spinning air below a thunderstorm that occurs over water — was a “black swan event” or a weather phenomenon characterized by its extreme rarity and severe impact, similar to Hurricane Katrina in 2005, they told the Times UK. “That water carries significant weight,” Matthew Schanck, chairman of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told the Times. “And if the waterspout ends up dumping a load of that water on board the vessel, that’s going to cause significant damage.” The Bayesian is believed to have sunk within minutes after being struck by the early morning storm. Six people, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and top New York City lawyer Christopher Morvillo, remained missing Wednesday as Italian officials investigate the ship’s sudden sinking. One expert, Andrea Ratti, a nautical design professor at Milan Polytechnic University, suggested the ship may have sunk so quickly because its windows, portholes or other openings may have been broken or smashed open by the powerful waterspout, allowing the vessel to quickly fill and sink. However, a UK industry expert said sinking a ship of that size should have taken hours. “I don’t think the industry has ever faced anything like this. It’s a horror story,” the unnamed expert declared. Meteorologists told the outlet the weather conditions that led to the ship’s demise were consistent with a waterspout and that a lot of unpredictability comes with tornado warnings. “There was a big thunderstorm just to the north of Sicily, a lot of lightning activity, lot of heavy rain, very strong signature of what we call ‘cold cloud tops’ on the satellite pictures. All of those things would add up to a thunderstorm that could easily spawn a waterspout,” said Dr. Pete Inness, a meteorology lecturer at the University of Reading in Berkshire, UK. Inness noted that with tornado warnings, officials can estimate when and where they will happen, but until one forms, they don’t know all the details, including how strong they will be. Additionally, like tornadoes, waterspouts are short-lived weather events that go undetected on radars. Along with the fact that it was dark out during the storm, it would’ve been difficult for the crew to realize what was happening, Inness said. There were 18 confirmed waterspouts off the coast of Italy on Aug. 19, according to the International Center for Waterspout Research. Other experts questioned why the crew wasn’t paying closer attention to various weather warnings ahead of the tragedy. “I don’t know if there was anyone on board consulting the radar. Let’s say that if I had been on board, at the first sign of a thunderstorm, I would have woken up all the occupants and been ready and alert with lifejackets on until the storm was over,” one of Italy’s leading climate experts, Luca Mercalli, told the outlet. Even if they had been paying closer attention, it was unlikely the crew could have been prepared for such a “high impact, low probability” weather event, Schanck added. “I’ve reviewed the forecasts. There was nothing other than thunder. There was nothing that jumped out to me that made it a dangerous decision to anchor there,” he said. The experts also squashed a theory shared by American entrepreneur Scott Painter , who suggested the ship’s 240-foot-tall mast — the tallest of its kind — may have made the vessel more vulnerable in the powerful weather event. One rescue diver told Italian media the yacht was “practically intact” underwater, and Tom Sharpe, a former Royal Navy commander, said the idea that the mast would make the ship unstable was “just incorrect.” “That mast is designed to have a massive sail hanging off it. So on its own with no sail, that’s not what has caused the boat to go over.” An official investigation into the incident will likely take months, prosecutors in Sicily said. Advertisement Surveillance video shows multiple burglaries of boats, homes across Miami; officials offering $8K rewardNORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) - It has been a recurring issue all summer long for homes and businesses across Miami: ATV-riding, fence-hopping thieves have robbed people’s property, including several times this month. Residents on Northwest South River Drive and elsewhere are fed up with the gang of crooks that keep hitting businesses in the area. “Multiple occasions, all the other marinas, I’ve been hit more than once,” said Pro Blue Marine Cpt. Alexis Perez. “It hurts our business.” One resident and targeted business owner, Felix Mari, said the thieves are professionals. “That’s all they do all night long. That’s their speciality. They know exactly what to do and how to do it and it just takes seconds,” he said. “They got a four-wheeler and they took off. All they do is go from Marina to Marina.” “On the ATVs?” said 7News reporter Sheldon Fox. “On the ATV,” said Mari. One of the recent places the mask-wearing thieves hit was Miami International Marina. In videos, provided exclusively to 7News, the thieves are seen hopping the barbwire fence looking to net expensive loot. “Climbing right there. You see him climbing?” said Mari as he pointed to the video. “After that, he jumps directly onto the boat.” The crooks climbed onto the property of Mari and the boats owned by his clients. Mari said the thieves took a GPS from the boat. “Here’s the GPS that they stole and you can see how they cut the wires,” said Mari. It’s the same type of steal that’s happening all across different marinas. The heist is said to occur overnight. The thieves struck as recently as last Thursday. “We can’t see his face. He’s got a mask,” said Mari. Mari and other victims said despite repeated calls to the police, the crooks keep coming back. “What are these guys after? What do they want?” said Fox. “Displays,” said Mari. Business owners said the thieves are after a Garmin navigation tool that helps boaters get around. In the market, the tool is worth $5,000. Perez said he’s lost fishing poles, navigation equipment, and other items. “They jump from backyard to backyard and they continue taking stuff from us,” said Perez. Not far from the marina, Vincent Sedeno of Boat Cradles Unlimited said he’s tired of his shipyard being where bandits come to boost items and damage vessels. “Yeah, whatever’s easiest to grab,” said Sedeno. Sedeno explained how the thieves stole the tools that he then has to replace through his own money. “Climb on the boat. Disconnect the wiring. Pop it out and they just cut the wire right through. Pull it out of the dash of the boat and then take it away,” he said. In one incident, the employees of Pro Blue Marine tried chasing the burglars. “I’m calling the police. I’m calling the police,” yelled an employee. “Go, go, go, go, go!” said the thieves as they zoomed off on their four-wheelers into the night, uncaught and unaccountable. One of the burglars caught on camera doesn’t seem to need a vehicle as he tends to do his crimes on foot. Despite already getting arrested, he returns to the same area as seen on surveillance video. Another big concern for victims and residents of the area is what might happen if and when they meet their unwanted visitors. “That’s the danger we want to prevent. You encounter one of these people and you don’t know if they have a gun,” said Mari. “Just trying to help us. Try to keep control of what’s going on here. We’re just working people that want to continue working. We don’t want our tools to be taken away,” said Perez. Business owners are offering an $8,000 reward for anyone who has information that can lead to the thieves’ arrest. If you have any information on this crime, call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000.
