Annapolis 30 (Rhodes)

Annapolis 30 (Rhodes) is a 30 ′ 2 ″ / 9.2 m monohull sailboat designed by Philip Rhodes and built by Olsen Marine Products (USA) starting in 1958.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Because the designer Philip Rhodes was unhappy about unauthorized changes made to his original specifications, he persued a court order against the builder and won. At this point, production was halted. Thanks to ‘amazed’, owner of hull #1 for providing correction on dates. (Rhodes design #c693)

About the boat.

annapolis 30 sailboat

The schooner, Liberté, is based on Spa Creek in Annapolis, Maryland. During the summer months, she’s docked at the Patriot Party Boats pier in Falmouth harbor in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Captain Chris and Jane had this vessel built just for them.

The original hull design by Dudley Dix is a Hout Bay 70, a two-masted gaff-rigged schooner intended as a heavy but fast offshore cruiser. Many alterations were made to the design, including adding a spoon bow, scaling down the lines to meet U.S. Coast Guard parameters, redesigning the deck layout and adjusting the rig to a three-masted staysail design.

10 New Cruising Sailboats Under 35 Feet

  • By Cruising World Staff
  • Updated: November 3, 2020

It wasn’t so long ago that 30- to 35-foot cruising sailboats were likely to be the largest yachts found in many a harbor. And while 40-something and even 50-something footers are all the rage at boat shows today, there’s a lot to be said for setting sail on a boat big enough to carry family and friends, but still small enough to be easily maintained and handled alone from time to time. Small cruising sailboats are simple to dock or tie up to a mooring, and finding long-term marina space is easier as well.

Choosing a cruising sailboat, no matter the size, is a big decision. And it helps to have a trusted list of boats to get started. Here, then, is a look at 10 of the best daysailers , weekenders and coastal cruising sailboats under 35 feet that are all in production and can be purchased new.

Alerion Sport 30

annapolis 30 sailboat

A quarter-century ago, Garry Hoyt launched what would come to be known as the daysailer genre with the introduction of the Alerion Express 28, a boat designed by the late Carl Schumacher that featured a minimal interior and a large cockpit where an owner and guests could enjoy the simple joy of sailing. Traditional and lovely looking—but with a quite modern underbody and a powerful sail plan—Hoyt, ever the marketer, proclaimed the boat to be “the prettiest girl at the dance.”

Since then, a number of siblings ranging from 20 to 41 feet have been added to the Alerion family, including the Alerion Sport 30, which retains the graceful sheer line, oval ports and stylish overhangs of the original Schumacher design. Yet with input from naval architect Langan Design Partners, it also embraces a solid measure of performance-oriented DNA.

Bavaria Cruiser 34

annapolis 30 sailboat

In every Boat of the Year contest, it seems, a boat rises up after sea trials to make a lasting impression on the judges. For 2018, that boat was the Bavaria Cruiser 34.

Says Boat of the Year Judge Tim Murphy, “The Bavaria was a lovely boat to sail. It has a single rudder, and she answered her helm just beautifully in the conditions we had today. We started off with around 10 knots of breeze that built to 13 to 15 knots. As a sailboat, it was just a pleasurable sailing experience, among the best we had during our judging. It was among the boats that felt like a really happy sailing experience.

Beneteau Oceanis 30.1

Beneteau Oceanis 30.1

Sailed as part of the 2020 Boat of the Year sea trials, the 31-foot-3-inch Beneteau Oceanis 30.1 was the compact yacht best-equipped and spec’d out as a dedicated cruising boat, and not coincidentally, it was also awarded the title of Best Performance Cruiser for 2020. But don’t let her cozy interior accommodations fool you; this is also one peppy little vessel.

Dehler 34

The 2017 Boat of the Year (BOTY) contest featured a stellar crop of crossover cruiser/racers; however, when all the testing was said and done, our independent panel of judges was sold on the Dehler 34, naming it the year’s Best Performance Cruiser. Designed by the highly regarded Judel/Vrolijk naval-architecture consortium, whose reputation was fostered by longtime success in international yacht-racing circles, the 34-footer combined contemporary good looks and a sweet turn of speed with better-than-average comfort and accommodations below. It didn’t hurt that the boat, nicely equipped at $215,000, was the least-expensive entry in the entire 2017 fleet. All in all, it proved to be a winning formula.

Dufour Grand Large 360

annapolis 30 sailboat

Dufour Yachts introduced its new 360 Grand Large model to CW’s Boat of the Year team in 2018 as a coastal cruiser intended for a couple or perhaps a small family. With that in mind, judge Alvah Simon found numerous clever elements to praise within the boat’s 35-foot-2-inch hull—a relatively modest LOA compared to the many 40-, 50- and 60-footers on display at the U.S. Sailboat show in Annapolis, Maryland.

After a roughly 10-year hiatus from the U.S. marketplace, the Slovenian builder Elan is back in a big way. For the 2017 Boat of the Year contest, the company launched a pair of new boats in the States, including the Elan E4, a 34-foot-9-inch performance cruiser with an emphasis on performing, designed by renowned British naval architect Rob Humphreys. The brand has been in business for seven decades and lately is perhaps even better known in America for its skis. Not surprisingly, given its complementary product lines—lots of sailors are fine skiers—its boats are as sleek and sporty as its boards.

Grand Soleil 34

Grand Soleil 34

Way back in the 1970s, when the well-known Italian boatyard Grand Soleil was just getting started, its first model was a Finot-designed 34-footer. With over 300 units sold, it was an instant success, and launched the company on an upward trajectory that spanned the intervening decades, mostly with an ongoing series of much larger, more complex racer/cruisers. For 2020, the builder decided to return to its roots with a completely revamped Grand Soleil 34, and it’s a terrific boat.

Value. How does one determine it? Price is most certainly a factor. In the case of new boats, and our Boat of the Year competition, it means something more. As sailors, we wish to recognize good boats that not only are affordable but offer other, tangible rewards. The ability to get couples and families out on the water, to have a weekend escape, to take them on coastal vacations and even maybe a sabbatical to the islands, all without breaking the bank. For 2019, the judging panel determined that one boat had the potential to do these things better than the rest, which is why they awarded the Best Value prize to the Hanse 348.

With a price tag under $200,000, during sea trials the Hanse 348 wowed the judging team from the get-go. “In only about 8 knots of breeze, we were seeing 5.7 knots upwind and pointing very nicely, and even registered 6.5 knots once we cracked off,” said Tim Murphy. “It’s a pretty sweet little boat.”

Italia 9.98

Italia 9.98

Of the performance cruisers that made their North American debut in 2020, in terms of sheer appearance, the futuristic 34-foot Italia 9.98 was easily the most distinctive. There are actually two versions of the boat: the 34 Club—which is the cruising alternative, the primary features of which are its twin wheels—and the 34 Fuoriserie—the racing model, and the one we tested, with its tiller steering being the identifying characteristic.

J/99

Beginning with the popular little J/24 way back in 1977, J/Boats has become famous for its steady introduction of terrific racing and cruising boats, almost all of which shared one main characteristic: They sailed like a witch. More than four decades later, having built more than 50 separate, mind-boggling models, the Johnstone family that designs, markets and sells the brand shows no signs of slowing down. Their latest offering, for 2020, was another fast and fun racer/cruiser: the 32-foot-7-inch J/99.

A reservation is needed to ensure that a sailboat is available when you want to go out. At least two adults are required on a rental boat, one of whom must be a qualified sailor. Up to 6 people are permitted on a rental boat; no children under 5 years of age are allowed. No pets are permitted.

A late fee of $75 will be charged per every half-hour overdue.

To reserve a Rainbow Rental, please call 410.267.7205 or email   [email protected]

KeelBoat Club Rainbow Rentals

Our Rainbow 24 sloops have proven to be nimble, fast, and forgiving. Designed by Sparkman and Stephens specifically for Annapolis Sailing School, the boats are ready to please both novice and experienced sailors. The substantial fixed keel (1100 lbs), cuddy cabin design, and large cockpit combine to produce a boat that is stable, dry, and comfortable.

Qualified Renters

At least one person in the rental party needs to have an ASA 101 certification or its equivalent. New customers must complete a sailing competency evaluation with us prior to their first rental. Renters are required to rig and de-rig their boat. The Rainbows do not have engines, so sailors must be able to depart and dock under sail.

If you need a refresher on rolling and flaking our sails, check out our how-to page here !

Sailing Area

Rentals are restricted to an area close enough to the school so that help can reach you quickly in an emergency situation. Boundaries, determined by management, are subject to change depending on weather and water conditions at the time of your rental. Please understand that going beyond these boundaries makes quick retrieval of the boats difficult in case of emergency. Late returns of boats due to venturing beyond the boundaries will result in late fees. If a renter goes outside the prescribed sailing area and needs to be retrieved, there will be a fee of $75 and the renter will be unable to rent with us in the future.

Sailing is entirely dependent upon wind and weather. We recommend that renters check marine.weather.gov three days before the rental date to see what the forecast is for that day. If small craft advisories or worse are in effect at the start of the rental, the rental may be postponed, canceled, or otherwise restricted at the discretion of the management. In that case, the rental can be re-booked at no additional cost. In low wind situations, you will need to plan your sail so that you can be back at the dock on time.

Cancellations

Rental reservations are charged at the time of booking. Rescheduling within three calendar days of the originally scheduled start of the reservation will result in a $50 rescheduling fee per occurrence. Cancellations made within two calendar days of the scheduled day of the reservation will receive no refund. Refunds are not available for lack of wind.

The boats are covered by insurance. Please inform management of any damage that occurred during the rental. The Lessee has no liability for repairs. However, Annapolis Sailing School is not responsible for personal injury or damage to other boats. You should check your own insurance coverage before sailing.

Other Restrictions

  • Children on board must be at least 5 years old
  • No alcohol allowed on boats
  • No pets allowed on boats
  • No swimming off the boats allowed
  • No anchoring
  • Boats are not permitted to dock at other marinas or facilities other than Annapolis Sailing School

Capt. Nate & Payton were great! We did an engagement shoot on the boat and they were unbelievably helpful. They were extremely accommodating to the photographer and worked to position the boat perfectly as the sun was setting. Siena is a beautiful boat and the west river is idyllic. Can't recommend enough.

Captain Tony was great host and helped us have a fantastic experience. He even taught my husband some sailing skills, which allowed me to relax, have some snacks and drinks. Boat was clean and very well maintained. He has a strong commitment to saftey and is very knowledgable about sailing. Highly encourage others to book a trip with him.

My fiancé and I are both from New England and grew up by the water, so we knew we wanted a nautical setting for our engagement photos. We had a fabulous time with Classic Sail Charters on the beautiful Siena! Captain was so helpful in offering to angle the boat this way and that for better light and even raising or collapsing sails. We'll definitely be back!

My husband I along with our two grown children (in their 30's), had a wonderful day with decent wind in July sailing at times to 15 knots! Captain Tony was accommodating and friendly. He had a variety of snacks and beverages on board and encouraged participation in sailing the boat as well as relaxing in the sun or shade! We will definitely do this again and we're thinking of also offering this as a gift to my parents who also love to sail.

This past Friday, we joined Capt. Tony aboard the Licentia for an afternoon sailing the Bay. We had a great afternoon sailing and motoring (we lost the wind) around the Bay and through the Annapolis Harbor. Capt. Tony is very knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. He has loads of sailing experience and all enjoyed his sea stories. Would we go again? Absolutely - planning a trip for next May.

Four of us sailed with Captain Tony on 2 different trips - one afternoon and one morning. Both days were fantastic and relaxing and lovely. The 2nd trip we lost the wind eventually so motored around the Bay and Annapolis and Tony gave us some history and stories. He is delightful and skilled and we had a terrific time. We will definitely plan another trip one of these day.

Schooner Woodwind, Annapolis Maryland Customer Testimonials Customer Reviews

“My husband and I sailed with you on last Saturday evening’s sunset cruise…we were with our dear friends who were celebrating their 25th anniversary. We all had such a wonderful time! Candidly, I was a bit apprehensive, having never sailed before and not knowing what to expect, but I will definitely be back! We all will. Thanks again, so much, for a wonderful adventure.”

Marieanne H.

“We love sailing on the Woodwind and Woodwind II; It is part of our summer plans every year, especially when family comes from out of town. The crew is always fun and professional and each sailing is a new adventure!”

The Paulsons Urbana, Maryland

Woodwind sails up to four times daily throughout our summer season from the Annapolis Waterfront Hotel. Each trip is unique. Let our captains and crew make your trip most enjoyable and memorable. Help hoist the sails (all 4 of them) or take a turn at the wheel.

On our cruises you will see:

  • United States Naval Academy
  • Annapolis Harbor
  • Chesapeake Bay
  • Scenic views of Annapolis skyline
  • Severn River

Depending on the wind direction and speed, you may see:

  • Chesapeake Bay Bridge (we may even go underneath)
  • Thomas Point Lighthouse
  • Kent Island
  • Regattas competing in the Bay
  • Ospreys and other local birds
  • Watermen checking their catch

The 74-foot schooner Woodwind and Woodwind II were custom designed and built specifically for sailing on the Chesapeake Bay. Woodwind is a replica of the classic, fast wooden schooners that were built as yachts in the early 1900s. Her handsome mahogany brightwork, gleaming chrome, and roomy cockpit distinguish her from cargo-carrying work vessels. Our bar is stocked with wine and beer, including a nice selection of local craft beer.

Have a group of up to 16 passengers?

You can get your tickets further in advance and be welcomed aboard first. Click here to learn about our group sailing packages on public cruises.

The Navy’s Newest Submarine Is Finally Here—and It’s Still No Match for China

The USS Idaho joins a vital—but painfully slow-growing—sub fleet .

  • The USS Idaho , the U.S. Navy’s latest Virginia- class attack submarine, officially launched last week after taking seven years to build.
  • The Navy is going to need more submarines to rival China’s naval buildup but won’t get the number it needs for nearly 30 years.
  • The ideal number of attack subs is 66, but Naval production is only on track to get to 48 by 2030 and 56 by 2040.

The submarine, P.C.U. Idaho , is the 26th Virginia -class nuclear-powered attack submarine. The sub, which was built by Electric Boat and Newport News Shipbuilding and took seven years to complete, was christened in March 2024 in Groton, Connecticut, after its construction was lengthened by COVID-19 and supply chain disruptions. Per tradition, the ship is temporarily designated P.C.U., or Pre-Commissioning Unit. The ship takes on the USS. designation, or United States Ship, once it is commissioned and handed over to the fleet.

Idaho is 377 feet long with a beam (width) of 34 feet. It displaces 7,900 tons underwater, three times more than its ancestor, a World War II Gato -class submarine. A single S9G (the G stands for General Electric) nuclear reactor drives a pump-jet propulsor instead of a traditional propeller screw, enabling the sub to reach a top speed of 25 knots. Like all nuclear-powered ships it has virtually unlimited range, its endurance limited only by the ship’s food supplies for the 135-person crew. Each has four 533 mm torpedo tubes, the standard torpedo diameter since well before World War II, enabling it to fire Mk. 48 ADCAP heavyweight torpedoes and sub-harpoon anti-ship cruise missiles.

The Navy has slowly improved the Virginia class over time in a series of blocks, a cost-saving measure over building a completely new boat that started with Block I. Idaho is what is referred to as a Block IV boat. One improvement introduced with the Block III boats is the swapping of twelve individual vertical launch silos, each of which could carry one Tomahawk cruise missile, with two 87-inch diameter Virginia Payload Tubes, each of which can carry six Tomahawk missiles. According to the Navy , the tubes are designed to “simplify construction, reduce acquisition costs, and provide for more payload flexibility than the smaller VLS tubes due to their added volume”

Idaho will remain pierside as shipyard workers install necessary equipment. According to the USS Idaho Commissioning Committee , she is due to be commissioned into the fleet in Spring 2025.

Preparing for War

Idaho enters the fleet as the U.S. submarine force is about to ungergo major changes. Submarines are viewed as a major fleet asset in a potential war with China, capable of crossing the Pacific quickly and taking up station in the Western Pacific. At least one submarine is thought to be in the Philippine Sea at all times. Today U.S. Pacific Fleet submarines are based in Guam, Washington State, and Hawaii. Under the new Australia-United Kingdom-United States (AUKUS) agreement, U.S. submarines will operate out of Australia by 2027 , vastly decreasing the time needed to reach “WestPac” in a crisis.

In the meantime, the U.S. is attempting to grow the submarine fleet as a counter to China’s growing navy. Although China’s own naval fleet is growing fast, it has no practical experience in anti-submarine warfare, and its submarines are easily a generation, if not two, behind American subs. Coupled with a submarine’s ability to stalk and ambush surface ships, Navy planners believe that America’s fleet of Los Angeles , Seawolf , and Virginia -class submarines will punch above their weight in a conflict with China, but there is still a consensus that the fleet must grow—fast.

chinese pla navy celebrates 75th founding anniversary

Unfortunately, while the submarine fleet will grow, it won’t happen fast. By 2030, the Navy anticipates having 48 attack submarines and 12 ballistic missile submarines on hand. By 2040, the Navy will have 56 attack subs and 13 ballistic missile subs. According to the latest projections, Navy won’t reach its goal of 66 attack subs until 2054, thirty years from now.

Why is the fleet growing so slow? A smaller defense budget is one reason: defense spending accounts for only 2.7 percent of the GDP , the lowest since 1999, compared to 5.7 percent in 1985, at the height of the Cold War, and 8.6 percent during the Vietnam War. Other factors include a withered industrial base, with fewer shipyards and thus fewer facilities to build submarines, as well as fewer trained workers. American shipyards are also building three Virginia s for the Royal Australian Navy, which, although the work will detract from the Navy’s total, the subs will still go to a fleet strongly allied with the United States—and against China.

Changes Full Steam Ahead

columbia ssbn

One of the biggest changes to the submarine fleet is the upcoming replacement of the 14 Ohio -class ballistic missile submarines, each of which carries up to 20 Trident II D-5 nuclear-tipped missiles, with 12 new Columbia- class boats, each with 16 Trident II missiles. The first Columbia -class boat, the USS District of Columbia , is expected to be complete by 2027 and begin its first nuclear deterrence patrol in 2031. As more Columbia s enter the fleet, the Ohio s will retire, with the last Columbia expected to be completed by 2041. There is some question, however, whether 12 submarines will be able to deter both Russia and China, the latter of which is embarking on a major nuclear buildup .

In the early 2000s, four submarines, Ohio , Michigan , Florida , and Georgia (collectively, OMFG ) were declared redundant as a result of the Strategic Arms Reduction Talks (START) II treaty with Russia. Rather than retire the ships, the Navy instead chose to convert them to guided-missile submarines. Each can carry a staggering 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles, giving each more short-term firepower than an aircraft carrier. As useful as they are, the subs are at the end of their service lives and all four will retire by 2028. Once the Columbia production run is finished, the Navy will order four new guided-missile subs, likely based on the Columbia hull, entering service in 2045.

the uss virginia fast attack submarine enters service

As for attack submarines, the Navy plans to continue building Virginia -class submarines for several more decades, keeping up the steady pattern of upgrades to keep them on the cutting edge. After two more Block IV submarines, the service will receive its first Block V sub. The Block Vs will be 70 feet longer, to accommodate payload modules designed to carry up to 28 Tomahawk cruise missiles, for a total ship load-out of 40 Tomahawks per boat. The Block Vs will also be able to carry the Navy’s new Conventional Prompt Strike hypersonic missiles instead of Tomahawks. A Block VI class is anticipated but its feature set is to be determined.

A replacement for the Virginia class, SSN(X) , is projected to enter service in 2041.

The Navy’s submarine fleet might well be the most important factor deterring China, Russia, and other like-minded nations from starting a war. As America’s submarine force grows, the options available to its adversaries shrinks, until the option of victory becomes vanishingly small. Building this fleet is no longer an industrial enterprise, it’s a geopolitical race that the Navy—and America—can’t afford to lose.
