Broward Marine is a custom yacht builder renowned for their beautiful and efficient hulls and respected for their seaworthiness. In its 60-year history, Broward Marine developed a reputation for building custom yachts that appealed to the most discerning yachtsmen. The Broward teams designed and built yachts that were respected for their efficient hulls and seaworthiness. In 1999, ownership changed hands and the company was renamed to Broward Yachts. Broward’s reputation for quality endures today. Broward Marine was established by Frank Denison, in 1948, on the site of the former Dooley's Basin & Dry Dock Company, which had been organized in 1937 for the war effort and which had closed after the war. The yard was located where Lauderdale Marine Center is now, on the New River, just east of I-95: see it from the air on Google here. The Saugatuck yard was started in 1977, on the north bank of the Kalamazoo River, close to its outlet into Lake Michigan.(That huge house on the beach just west of the Saugatuck yard was built by Denison for his own use.) Ownership of the company changed hands in about 2000 and the new owners, called Broward Yachts, closed both yards and moved construction to a yard in Dania Beach, just south of Port Everglades, in Broward County. The new company failed in the Bush recession of 2009 but the yard is still going as a refit/repair facility, now under the name Broward Shipyard.

Broward Yachts is as American as bourbon. Originally founded while Michigan boat technician Franklin Denison – credited with fitting the first diesel engine in a yacht during the 1930s - was on his honeymoon in sunny Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Denison and his wife, Gertrude, purchased a Fort Lauderdale shipyard and immediately rechristened it from Dooley’s Dry Dock to Broward Marine (it has since been renamed Broward Yachts). The couple ran a service and repair business there until 1953, when Broward launched the Stormy III, its first custom motor yacht designed by John Wells, a respected naval architect and marine consultant from New York.

More About Broward Yachts

Between 1950 and 1953, Broward was commissioned by NATO to built minesweepers for the US and Dutch Navies, a task that cemented Broward’s reputation as a leader in technical naval innovation. After this stint in the military sector, Broward returned to producing luxury yachts. In early 1950s, Broward was commissioned by the Reynolds family of Reynolds Metal Company to build a boat with the family’s own metal alloy. The result of this commission, launched in 1955, was the first all-welded aluminum yacht built in the US. Broward was also responsible for the glamorous 82-foot Jonathan III, built for Harry Blum, owner of Jim Beam Distilleries. Through the 80s and 90s, Broward presided over what would become known as ‘the golden age of yachts,’ its enthusiastic creative atmosphere and competitive corporate culture spurring innovation. By 1999, the shipyard had launched over 220 yachts. Though it has since changed hands – the shipyard is now operated by Bruce Moore, a former merchant marine, and his brother Chris, an electrical engineer – Broward’s reputation for excellence and technical expertise continues unabated.

Broward Yachts specializes in 60- and 165-foot hand-built aluminum and steel custom yachts; these materials are uniquely suited to bespoke customization as changes to the length or superstructure of the yacht can be made during the building process which encourages a dynamic and free-flowing collaboration between shipyard and client. Broward vessels typically have deeper-depth drafts and wide beams, making them perfect for overnight cruising. Over the years, Broward has produced many different yacht and superyacht configurations, from sport fish and pilothouses to raised bridges and tri-decks.

This classic motor yacht with raised pilothouse makes the most of its available space, accommodating up to 8 people in elegant, roomy staterooms, as well as 5 crew spread across three crew cabins whose warm maple interior finish exemplifies the comfortable design that Broward Yachts is renowned for. The generous main deck is equipped with a full wet bar and wraparound bench-style seating, perfect for socializing late into the night. The hardtop provides shade on the forward part of the flybridge, which also features a barbecue for a summer grill-out. A luxury yacht brand with more than 50 years of experience in building high-quality boats, Broward Yachts was originally known as Broward Marine. Founded in 1948, Broward Marine began by building wooden boats that were of the highest quality and value. During the 1970s Broward Marine embraced the introduction of aluminum and went on to deliver more than 300 custom luxury yachts ranging from 60 (18m) to 164 feet (50m) from the original yard in Fort Lauderdale and second yard in Saugatuck, Michigan. Today the yard is based on America’s east coast in Dania, Florida, where the renowned builders specialize in offering full refit, repair and maintenance services.

Broward Yachts History

Founded in 1948 by Frank Denison, the Fort Lauderdale shipyard Broward Marine began on the site of the former Dooley’s Basin & Dry Dock Company, a Fort Lauderdale shipyard and defense contractor which had closed after the Second World War. During Broward Marine’s first few years the yard successfully built military vessels ranging from 144 (44m) to 173 feet (53m) for the Dutch and US Navy. At the time the yard became the largest private employer in Broward County. After the end of the Korean War, the yard went on to become a service and repair yard and in 1953 the yard launched their first custom wooden motor yacht, the 53-foot (16m) STORMY III, designed by naval architect John Wells. The yard’s primary focus shifted to building custom luxury yachts, and five years later, the 82-foot (25m) JONATHAN III was built for Harry Blum, the then owner of Jim Beam Distilleries.

Broward Marine was originally known for its wooden boats, but in the mid-1970s the two shipyards embraced the introduction of aluminum and soon began building its traditional-looking yachts with the new metal in an all-aluminum series of motor yachts. The 1970s also saw Broward developing the first turbine-powered yacht, the 87-foot (27m) EVON, and in 1976 construction began on a new site on the north bank of the Kalamazoo River. The Michigan facility became so efficient it accounted for almost half of all the Broward yachts built after 1978.

During the latter part of the 20th century, Broward Marine developed a reputation for its high-quality builds and went on to build more than 300 Broward yachts between the original yard and the yard in Saugatuck, Michigan. Operating from the two yards, Broward was able to complete between six and eight builds per annum with as many as a dozen vessels under construction at any one time. At the time, the yacht-building industry was booming and with it came continuous innovations. One such modernization was the first-ever “country kitchen” galley, designed by Mrs. Denison; this remains a popular feature on yachts today. Throughout the proceeding decades, Broward Marine continued to launch many firsts, including the 112-foot (34m) BRITANNIA, which was able to reach speeds of up to 43 knots thanks to her triple Detroit Diesel engines. Then came the 130-foot (40m) tri-deck motor yacht PEGASUS, and in the early 1990s, the 156-foot (48m) BUBBA TOO, which at the time of her build was the largest US-built aluminum vessel ever commissioned.

At the end of the 20th century, Broward Marine was sold to Glenn Straub, and a decade later to Tom Lewis, who changed the name to Broward Yachts and moved all construction to a yard in Dania Beach in Broward County. The yard went on to specialize in the build of custom yachts ranging between 60 (18m) to 164 feet (50m) in length, with incredible performance. They have produced a number of notable yachts since 2000, including the 124-foot (38m) COCO LOCO (now VIVA MAS), which was delivered in 2008. The all-aluminum raised pilothouse with flybridge and an interior design by Evan K Marshall is a popular charter vessel. Today the yard specializes in offering full refit, repair and maintenance services from the shipyard in South Florida.

She is a houseboat style design with walkaround side decks and a huge enclosed aft deck - incredible for entertaining or liveaboard. The owner's and guest's staterooms are aft and crew is separate in the bow area. Crew also has access to the full beam engine room thru their quarters.  The enclosed aft deck is furnished with U-shaped seating, two (2) chrome pedestal mounted teak tables with leaf that converts to formal dining and port and starboard wing doors leading to port and starboard weather decks. The main salon is furnished with a blue-gray sofa to port and two (2) swivel chairs to starboard, glass top coffee table and matching end table.
