2 people are rescued from a disabled yacht off the Australian coast

Two people have been rescued unharmed Tuesday after spending a night aboard a disabled yacht in the heavy seas off the Australian coast

SYDNEY -- Two people were rescued unharmed Tuesday after spending a night aboard a disabled yacht in heavy seas off the Australian coast.

The 60-year-old man and a 48-year-old woman were rescued at 7:30 a.m. from their 19-meter (62-foot) yacht, which was abandoned 300 kilometers (185 miles) east of the New South Wales state coast, Police Chief Inspector Anthony Brazzill said. The pair were expected to reach Sydney aboard a police boat Tuesday night.

The pair had activated their emergency beacon around 1 p.m. Monday, about 185 kilometers (115 miles) east of the New South Wales coastal town of Nowra, police said.

The yacht, “Spirit of Mateship,” had experienced a mechanical failure, lost a rudder, was taking water and was drifting east away from the shore, Brazzill said. With an ocean swell of 5 to 6 meters (16 to 20 feet) and winds of up 110 kilometers (70 miles) per hour, he said, conditions were considered too dangerous to attempt a rescue in the dark.

An air force C-130 Hercules transport plane flew to the yacht and made radio contact with the two people onboard. A police boat and an Australian navy warship reached the yacht early Tuesday.

Brazzill said a winching rescue by military helicopter was considered, but ruled out as too dangerous because of the sea conditions.

The pair were rescued in a small craft launched from the police boat, he said.

Two people 'safely rescued' from stricken yacht Spirit of Mateship after major sea operation off NSW coast

By Jesse Hyland

Topic: Maritime Accidents and Incidents

A 60-year-old man and 48-year-old woman have been rescued from a stricken yacht at about 7:25am following a major joint sea operation.

The rescue operation was launched when a distress beacon was sent out by the Spirit of Mateship some 185 kilometres east of Nowra about 1pm on Monday.

What's next?

Nemesis is expected to arrive back in Sydney tonight.

Two people have been safely rescued from a stricken yacht following a major joint operation on the New South Wales south coast this morning.

A rescue operation was launched when a distress beacon was sent out by the Spirit of Mateship about 1pm on Monday.

The 19-metre yacht, which has been in several Sydney to Hobart races, had mechanical failure, the rudder was lost and the vessel was taking on water.

NSW Police Marine Area Command and the Australian Defence Force received notification of the beacon by the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre.

The Australian Defence Force ship HMAS Canberra reached the vessel at 1am today, with the NSW Water Police vessel Nemesis arriving two hours later.

The yacht was 90 nautical miles south-east of Sydney when police headed out to rescue the pair, but by the time they arrived the vessel was 160 nautical miles away.

A 60-year-old man and 48-year-old woman were rescued from the vessel about 7:30am.

Rescued pair 'in good spirits'

Australian Maritime and Safety Authority (AMSA) duty manager Ben Flight told ABC News Breakfast they still have limited communications with the pair, but they are uninjured.

"They're in good spirits and well," Mr Flight said.

He said the HMAS Canberra was also there providing a "bit of a shielding presence from the wind and the sea to try and calm the local environment down".

"It's still around 50-to-60-kilometre winds and 4-to-5-metre seas this morning so very, very dangerous and trying conditions," Mr Flight said.

"The team did a really good job this morning getting the two people off safely."

The yacht is beyond salvation and had to be abandoned.

The man and woman were taken on board the Nemesis, which is travelling to Sydney.

It's anticipated the ship will arrive at NSW Police Marine Area Command about 6:30pm tonight.

'They're grateful for the rescue'

NSW Marine Area Command Chief Inspector Anthony Brazzill said the pair were rescued after police launched a smaller vessel to extract them.

"As far as I know just from the crew, they were brought on board, given some food and allowed to go to sleep," he said.

"They're fatigued, they're uninjured and, from what I understand, grateful for the rescue."

Chief Inspector Brazzill said he believed the man had been living on the yacht and was travelling around the east coast after departing from the Gold Coast last New Year's Eve.

The man and woman, who are understood to be friends, left Jervis Bay "yesterday or the day before" planning to head to Sydney before the man left for the Gold Coast, according to Chief Inspector Brazzill.

On Monday, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said it was battling up to 5 metre seas and 70 to 90kph, with the weather conditions preventing rescue efforts from taking place that night.

The operation resumed this morning.

A RAAF C-130J Hercules aircraft stayed on the scene until 9pm after leaving from Richmond, but was forced to return.

The Spirit of Mateship has taken part in numerous Sydney to Hobart yacht races since 2013.

Ahead of its inaugural Sydney to Hobart race, then-prime minister Tony Abbott officially launched its name in honour of its crew, made up of injured ADF personnel.

A major maritime rescue operation is underway after a yacht that once competed in the Sydney to Hobart race found trouble off the south coast of NSW .

A distress beacon was activated from the 19m-long Spirit of Mateship, about 150km offshore from Nowra about 1pm on Monday.

The yacht is carrying two sailors.

“The vessel is believed to have sustained a mechanical issue and is taking on water,” NSW Police said.

Marine Area Command and Australian Defence Force have been notified and are racing to the ship.

Three helicopters deployed from Nowra, Wollongong and Sydney made contact with the crew “but were not able to retrieve them due to fuel considerations”, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said.

An RAAF C-130J Hercules aircraft and two Navy ships, HMAS Arunta and Canberra, are involved in the rescue.

“Officers are expected to rendezvous with the vessel about midnight,” police said.

There are no reports of injuries.

The Spirit of Mateship first raced in the Sydney to Hobart in 2013 and was named in honour of its crew, which was made up of injured Australian Defence Force personnel.

Night rescue proves ship readiness

3 September 2024

While on deployment, HMAS Sydney’s crew completed challenging night-time man-overboard drills using their on board dummy, ‘Oscar’.

A man-overboard exercise is a seamanship evolution where the ship’s rigid hull inflatable boat (RHIB) is launched into the water to recover a person.

Boat coxswain Leading Seaman Blake Chapman was in charge of the RHIB that rescued Oscar.

“When we hear the pipe of man-overboard it’s a lot of adrenaline pumping through you as we’re running up ladder bays to get up to the boat deck to launch the RHIB as soon as possible,” Leading Seaman Chapman said.

“Once you hit the water, time slows down, and you’re just looking for Oscar. Once you see him in the water you start racing to him.

“For me personally, getting to do it during the night was a new experience but I was also very nervous. If this was a real-life situation we’d want to rescue our ‘oppo’ [friend/colleague] as fast as possible.”

Leading Seaman Chapman achieved his RHIB coxswain endorsement during the exercise.

“It feels unreal to now have my endorsement as it’s a couple of months of hard work,” he said.

Achieving a RHIB coxswain endorsement requires extensive training, including launching and recovering the boat while underway, recognising maritime signals and operating marine radio.

Boat coxswain training also includes transferring personnel to and from the ship.

“I first did a personnel transfer in Jervis Bay and now I’ve gotten to do them on this deployment, transferring people in Hawaii, which was unreal and really fun,” Leading Seaman Chapman said.

Conducting weekly whole-of-ship training like a man-overboard exercise ensures Sydney’s crew are prepared to respond swiftly to real-world scenarios.

Sydney is conducting a regional presence deployment to enhance cooperation and relationships with regional partners and allies.

Thieves steal boat from nonprofit working to protect Ohio River

by Tyler Madden, WKRC

(Ryan Argo)

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - It's a shocking discovery for a local nonprofit dedicated to protecting the Ohio River.

Thieves broke in and took off with a boat, while causing a whole lot more damage.

“I reached out to one of my teammates, and as he proceeded to go out to our boat cage, he noticed a motor on the ground, and the motor he needed was on a boat that was missing,” said Rob Tewes with ORSANCO.

Workers at the nonprofit are left in shock at the damage that was caused.

“A whole boat and a trailer were missing; batteries had been cut out; fuel tanks and cans are all gone; all hitches pulled off of the trucks,” said Tewes.

After surveying the damage and tracking down everything missing, the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission, also known as ORSANCO, said they're out $100,000.

“I’ve been here for about 24 years and never have we had a theft or damage like that. It’s pretty overwhelming,” said Lila Ziolkowsi with ORSANCO.

ORSANCO is a nonprofit group that monitors all 981 miles of the Ohio River. Each of the boats is outfitted with special equipment. They're charged with controlling pollution and monitoring river water.

“We have to have the eyes on the river and the boats on the river that do the sampling and analysis to show that the water is safe,” said Ziolkowsi.

The theft of one boat and damage to the others has left the group with just one boat to do work across eight states. Crews are now adjusting schedules to keep up their work.

“We get back to the hotel at midnight or 1 a.m., slick the boat out, load everything up, and get it ready for the next crew, and that boat runs the next day,” said Tewes.

The summer months are also some of the busiest on the water. Tewes said that Cincinnati police are investigating the incident.

“When our efforts are cut down or chopped off at the knees, it impacts everybody,” said Ziolkowsi.

If you have any information on the stolen boat, you're asked to call Crime Stoppers at (513)-352-3040.

What Our Students Say

“I have been on a Superyacht for six months and I absolutely love it! The crew is great and the owners are wonderful. We left Florida two weeks ago and we are on a three month trip over to California! We made a stop in Cuba and the owners invited all of the crew to go on day trips with the guests to sight see! Now we are in the Cayman Islands. From here we head through the Panama Canal and then we go to Panama City, Papagallo Peninsula Costa Rica then Cabo San Lucas, before we end up to Southern California. This is such a great experience for me. I do stewardess work, cook for crew and guests, handle lines when docking and leaving as well as watch shifts while we’re underway. I just wanted to say thanks again for all the valuable training I received in my classes! Thank you!”

Jessica Benway – Stewardess

“I am so excited!!! I went for my first interview yesterday afternoon at an agency and got a call from them later on advising that they’d put me forward for a 2nd stewardess position and to expect a call from the captain. He rang this morning and we met at Starbucks and… they are flying me up on Friday! It’s happened so fast, but it felt right. The yacht is currently in Norfolk, Virginia and we will be heading out very soon to spend the season in New England. The captain was really laid back and very forthcoming. Apparently the yacht is privately owned by a wealthy guy (obviously) and isn’t chartered out very often. Mostly they do cocktail parties. He thinks we will be in the Mediterranean next year although he is waiting on confirmation from the owner. The pace on the yacht seems very relaxed. It will be a great place for me to learn as much as possible. I am so keen to get started. Thank you!”

Carlie – Stewardess

“Everything is going GREAT for me over here! We have travelled from Fort Lauderdale all the way along the East Coast up to Labrador, Canada over 4000 miles so far. My roster is split so I spend the first part of the day as a deckhand and the second part of the day as the second stewardess onboard a 154 foot SuperYacht. The owners are fantastic. I really enjoyed the interior crew course and feel so much more prepared for my stewardess role.”

Katie Ford – Stewardess and Deckhand

“I was totally impressed by the STCW training I received at the Superyacht Crew Academy. The instructors were excellent, the equipment top notch, and I truly feel confident that I would perform well in the case of an emergency aboard ship. Thank you Chris and Deb for being so helpful to me. As a foreign student coming to Australia for this training, your kindness was extra meaningful. I am now a Superyacht Agent in Noumea and spend a lot of time aboard superyachts. Even though I am not a member of the crews, my STCW training is right there in the back of my mind just in case there was an emergency; especially when refuelling, helping resupply the medical equipment or moving heavy equipment on and off the superyachts.”

Chloe Morin – Super yacht Agent Noumea Ocean Services

“You are by far the most professional and successful training facility that I have dealt with around the world. Keep up the amazing work!”

Nick Smith – Chief Officer M/Y Akula

“A big thank you for your professionalism to all people from the Superyacht Crew Academy. Your team really made this experience unforgettable.”

Laurent Dreyer – Fastrack Graduate

“My experience with Superyacht Crew Academy was amazing. I had a fantastic time on the deck crew course and learnt a lot more than I expected.”

Tom Armstrong – Deckhand

“In my first interview I got offered a job! I really liked the chief stewardess so I am on a 43m private Superyacht for the season. I have been on the boat for two weeks and so far all is going well. I am looking forward to a good season and I will be home for Christmas. Two other people who did the course with me, Emily and Adam also got jobs very easily! Thank you again for all of your support and giving us a great head start!”

Ashtyn Leary – Stewardess

“The instructors were excellent, very professional and thorough. My training at Superyacht Crew Academy made my job as stewardess aboard the Tango possible and enjoyable. It really helps to have the inside story from experts before you begin. I’m happy to recommend the Superyacht Crew Academy to anyone interested in working in this industry.”

Haley – Stewardess M/Y Tango

“I just wanted to say thank you to the staff at Superyacht Crew Academy. I am currently working on a 43m M/Y Eclipse which is situated in Israel during the winter and the Mediterranean in the summer. I am heading into my third week here, now crossing to Genoa, Italy for the boat show. I am a 3rd stewardess and loving it. We are now in Kotor in Montenegro near Croatia and it is absolutely stunning. I am loving my job and have been lucky enough to rotate with duties and will be doing service this week, in a few hours actually. Thank you for all your help!”

Lauren A – Stewardess

” I thought I would give you a quick update on my adventures. I’ve just finished a cruise on an expedition vessel and am back in Antibes looking for a new position as a stewardess. Thank you for the casual work experience I did while completing my interior course. It’s definitely a lot better now that I have the right qualifications and some experience. I’m finding that there is so much more available to me.”

Natasha Harris – Stewardess

“Thank you for all the help and support that you gave me when i was studying with you. it was amazing and I will no doubt be visiting again hopefully at the end of next year when I come to do my Yacht Master OffShore. The Boat has offered me an awesome opportunity to learn all there is to learn as well as an awesome salary, benefits, and program. Not to mention the crew are a happy bunch of people and we are like a large family…. I have learned that the crew makes the boat and that is the main thing, not the salary, benefits or program!”

Joshua McCouat – Deckhand

Superyacht Australia

How to become superyacht crew.

working on a yacht sydney

Superyacht Australia, the peak national industry body for the superyacht industry in Australia, is proud to have published a new resource aimed at making it easy for Australians to start their journey as superyacht crew.  Australians are natural superyacht crew with over 90% of our population living on the coast.  Fishing, surfing, swimming, sailing, and paddling are weekly pastimes for nearly all Aussie kids growing up in and around the water. Many have “saltwater in their veins” with surf lifesaving “Nippers” and sailing club “Tackers” programs training children from the age of five in skills that will be sought after as future superyacht crew.

The superyacht industry has virtually been unknown to young Aussies, with those discovering it as a result of backpacking in Europe or by reality TV shows such as “Below Deck” broadcasting on popular streaming services. Internationally the superyacht industry is booming, with vessels getting much larger, more of them and requiring double the amount of crew as many yachts offer rotational positions for senior crew.

The superyacht industry is also gaining momentum in Australia with popular charter destinations including Sydney, the Queensland coast and the Kimberley’s attracting more yachts. This new resource aims to educate young Aussies on what a superyacht is, where you can find them cruising (within Australia and internationally) and different entry-level roles available onboard.

The qualifications required are easy to complete locally in Australia and can provide a great base for future maritime careers.  The STCW 95 (Standards of Training and Certification for Watchkeepers) certification is the mandatory qualification set by the International Maritime Organisation and takes 8 days to complete including theory and practical courses.

Australia is lucky to have two great training providers including Crew Pacific , based in Cairns, and Superyacht Crew Academy based on the Northern Beaches of Sydney. Both training providers offer STCW courses and further Steward/ess and Deckhand courses, aimed to provide students with the necessary basic knowledge of the interior and exterior departments before starting their first roles. The resource also outlines the Mandatory Certificate of Medical Fitness required to confirm you are medically fit to perform the duties required onboard.

Once qualified, Australia has many recruitment companies eager to place “green” crew into their first role. This includes Hill Maritime , a worldwide maritime recruitment and consultancy firm, that places quality engineers on quality vessels all over the world.  Coastal Yachting Recruitment , based on the Gold Coast, is also experienced in placing professional crew worldwide on luxury superyachts.

David Good, CEO, Superyacht Australia commented “Australia has the reputation for providing the best yacht crew in the world, we have a great education, excellent work ethic, and a relaxed professional attitude. This is our opportunity to travel, get paid exceptionally well, and gain sea-time experience that is highly sought after when you want to come ashore and use that experience.”

Superyacht Australia will be distributing this new resource at career expos in major cities such as Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Gold Coast, and Brisbane where up to 12,000 school leavers per event attend seeking information on future careers.

This new resource can be found on our Superyacht Australia website here: https://www.superyacht-australia.com/superyacht-careers-information/
