Boat of the Week: Meet ‘Game Changer,’ a 227-Foot Explorer Yacht With the World’s Best Dive Center

The 227-foot Gamechanger is an expedition yacht with the world's best dive center and submersible on a superyacht

Game Changer is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. She’s an explorer yacht underpinned by a support vessel platform. She was launched in 2017 as the fourth hull in Damen Yachting’s 227-foot yacht support range. But it’s the incredible onboard amenities where her strengths lie, from the custom Airbus H130 and PADI five-star dive center to the all-new U-Boat Worx CR3 submarine collected last month from Curaçao.

Like many explorers, Game Changer has circumnavigated the world once already since her delivery. But unlike most new builds, she has already completed two refits. It’s all part of the owner’s plan. Having bought the yacht after completion, he tweaked her on delivery, then test ran her for a year before deciding on further changes in a second refit, says Captain Mike Rouse.

“It was always the plan to do the refit in two stages,” Rouse told Robb Report . “The owner wanted to work out what they did and didn’t like, and the only real way of doing that is to experience the boat firsthand for at least a year.”

Launched in 2017, Game Changer has already done one cruise around the world, spending most of her time in colder climates like Patagonia.  Courtesy Edmiston

The first 2018 refit fully upgraded the galley and extended the main salon. The most significant installment was the state-of-the-art dive center, with a custom air compressor. It contains 48 dive cylinders and a Hyperlite Recompression Chamber to facilitate extreme diving operations in the most remote locations. Game Changer ’s ability to function as a true expedition yacht and undertake technical diving expeditions with both scuba and submarine was central to the owner’s motivations behind buying the yacht.

In 2019, Game Changer covered 48,000 miles, much of which was spent off the beaten track in colder climates. The world tour took in South Georgia, Patagonia, the Pacific and Indonesia; areas largely driven by research-led dive expeditions. In Antarctica, the boat was joined by a British Antarctic Survey Scientist who studied fjord ice retreat patterns using the yacht’s submarine. Alongside guest experts, the crew comprises dive instructors, dive masters and a rebreather diver to carry out underwater filming, as well as submarine and helicopter pilots.

In terms of toys and equipment, Game Changer stocks some serious gear. An ROV underwater electric robotic capable of diving to 3,280-feet operates alongside the three-person submersible. But it was the six onboard tenders and a desire for better access to the water that drove some of the larger changes in the 2020 refit.

The yacht was designed as the ultimate dive and exploration yacht, with a PADI-certified dive center, submersible and, of course, an onboard helicopter.  Courtesy Edmiston

“We definitely needed a bigger swim platform, because we carry some large tenders and the setup just didn’t work,” says Rouse. A 10-foot extension on the aft deck increased Game Changer ’s overall length to 236 feet and delivered an all-new beach club with larger swim platform.

Dynamic positioning has also been fitted, which allows the yacht to stay in a specific spot with anchoring. They also installed sonar systems on both Game Changer and her 38-foot Intrepid tender to map the sea floor at depths of 3,900 feet.

“We did a lot of noise and vibration insulation throughout the entire boat and a ton of engineering upgrades to make it more efficient and easier to maintain,” he adds. Many of the changes have also helped to make the boat more charter friendly, including fully refurbished guest cabins, bathrooms and larger windows. The yacht can be chartered through Edmiston.

Only four years old, the yacht has gone through two refits to create a beach club as well as expanding and refining its main salon.  Courtesy Edmiston

“We’ve had a lot of inquiries for heli-skiing and the gyro-stabilized camera that hangs off the front of our helicopter means we can do a lot of filming in remote locations,” says Rouse.

Thanks to its outstanding dive center and submersible, Game Changer has been called upon to serve as a support vessel three times for other chartered yachts. It would also make a reliable platform for researchers who want to explore the depths.

But for anyone who chooses to charter Game Changer on her own, it’s the five-star dive center and submarine capable of reaching 3,600 feet below the surface that is the big draw. “Unlike most other charter yachts, we don’t have to do rendezvous diving, which means guests aren’t reliant on what the local dive company can provide,” says Captain Rouse. “We have everything in place to run the boat as a fully licensed dive center from anywhere in the world.”

For the owner, the next stop is Central America and the Caribbean while he waits to see when the rest of the world will open back up. “He bought a boat that he can go around the world in, and that’s what he intends on doing,” says Rouse.

On board Damen's 'Game Changer'

Yacht support vessel 'game changer' has left the shipyard for london, where amels and damen formally introduce the 69m vessel to the market….

Image for article On board Damen's 'Game Changer'

As superyacht technology and design evolves, is seems more and more owners are wanting to breach the confines of the superyacht cruising circuit for those less accessible locations, which of course call for more functional and purpose-built vessels. As a result, the last five years has belonged to the upsurge of the explorer vessel.

However, for existing superyacht owners who wish to travel further afield, selling their ‘conventional’ superyacht for a more capable explorer is no longer the only viable option, nor is it the most economical. As Damen has demonstrated with its Yacht Support range, you can completely transform the way you use your superyacht with the addition of a Yacht Support vessel. To communicate this to the market, 69m Game Changer’s maiden voyage was to London, to demonstrate her phenomenal capabilities.

Initially, her hard-hitting exterior clearly showcases the yacht’s primary purpose – it’s a kind of ‘what you see is what you get’ presence. Game Changer’ s exterior design is anything but an aesthetical masterpiece by traditional standards. However, in relation to the growing appreciation of the explorer yacht, there is certainly a place in the market for this functional and appearance. In Game Changer’ s case, there’s no place for frills – just practicality in its rawest form.

“The yacht is all about practicality,” says Victor Caminada, marketing manager at Amels, as he walks SuperyachtNews round the vessel. “The boat is rough and tough, reliable and very professional.”

With a maximum take-off weight of 5,000 kg, arguably one of the most impressive exterior features, alongside the 250sqm of deck space and 12-ton deck crane, is its high safety LY3- and MCA-certified helideck. “This arrangement derives form the offshore industry, where this is the standard practice,” Caminda says of the helideck, whcih includes a full drainage system and fire-fighting equipment, enhancing its safety standards further.

While Game Changer is an intrinsically functional vessel, the interior is still a very welcome environment for owners and crew alike. “The nickname of Yacht Support vessel Garçon among crewmembers is actually ‘crew paradise’, as there is more space, and the atmosphere is much more relaxed when there’s no owner on board,” explains Caminada. The yacht has the capacity to carry 21 crewmembers, including pilots, massage therapists and additional staff for the mothership.

The Yacht Support solution offers something which superyachts below 75m can’t really achieve without compromising valuable space on board. According to Damen, the cost of a 75m new build in comparison to an owner’s existing 55m superyacht will incur an increase in capital investment of 225 per cent, whereas the owner’s existing 55m+ superyacht with a support vessel will see a capital investment increase of only 120 per cent. But the major difference is the latter will result in a considerably larger tender and toy storage of 225sqm, in comparison to 130sqm of a 75m superyacht, as well as a combined LOA of 100m.

Overall, the level to which the yacht’s finished is more than impressive from the perspective of both crew and owner. While Game Changer isn’t faired to the same level as an Amels superyacht would be, its demonstration of sheer functionality and resilience is a truly impressive spectacle. GAME CHANGER is a 72 metre (236'22") support vessel built in 2017 by the Dutch shipbuilder DAMEN. She is the fourth hull in Damen's 70-metre segment and can accommodate up to 17 guests in 8 luxurious cabins. She has received a significant update in 2020 and was extended from 69m to 72m in length.

NOTABLE FEATURES: ~Fully certified Helideck and hangar ~250m² of open deck space ~Dive centre with decompression chamber ~Lift system ~Offices ~Stabilizers ~Deck crane ~Long range cruising capabilities

GAME CHANGER is an impressive support vessel that provides the ultimate experience for guests who wish to have fun off the beaten track while significantly reducing the usual cost of ownership for a yacht this size.

She has a huge storage and guest capacity and really offers the ultimate yachting solution for professional helicopter operations. With her 237 ft LOA and 820 square feet of deck space, she is the ideal yacht for those who want to do more with more equipment, toys and staff. She is perfectly equipped to support wide-ranging operations with the benefits of flexible operations and privacy. Her interior is bright, with use of neutral fabrics and light wooden panels.

With an additional interior 110 square metres of indoor space, needless to say, she offers guests plenty of room for any activity on board as well as storage for large water toys.

Her certified helipad on the aft deck allows a large helicopter to be lowered below deck into the safety of an enclosed hangar. She has onboard refueling capabilities also.

Overall, GAME CHANGER is a massive leap forward in capability, allowing guests to go to exciting new destinations with less established superyacht infrastructure but larger tenders, helicopters and submersibles. With quarters for 22 crew, she also allows for more staff, be they guides, pilots or security personnel.

2018 modifications and an extensive update to the vessel: ~ addition of new guest and crew areas ~ an exceptionally well-equipped dive centre with a custom set-up and tri-mix facilities by Moondog Diving ~ certification for Arctic and Antarctic operations in compliance with the IMO Polar Code.

A Game Changer: On Board A Support Vessel in London

By Ben Roberts

It’s not a sight often witnessed in London; a large, intimidating support vessel packed to the rafters with toys and potential for owners looking to explore the world in style. Sat effortlessly on the Thames in the shadow of HMS Belfast, Superyachts.com steps on board the 70-metre (227 ft) Support Vessel Game Changer for a closer inspection.

DAMEN’s brand-new support vessel - built from the popular Sea Axe range - has had its fair share of interest since passing Tower Bridge this week. With events on board and brokers coming to see exactly what’s available to owners, we were given an insight into the potential of owning a vessel to support your superyacht.

Toys Game Changer, and the whole Sea Axe range for that matter, is built for the superyacht adventure that requires an arsenal of toys, teams and tenacity. With submarines, large tenders, 20-ton crane, helicopter hangar and large landing pad alongside all forms of jet skis to water toys, this is the boat for an owner looking to explore the world while making the most of the ‘mother yacht’.

“Our clients want to go to exciting new destinations with less established superyacht infrastructure and they want to have more fun with larger tenders, larger helicopters and submersibles,” comments DAMEN Product Director Mark Vermeulen. “ They also want to take more staff, guides, pilots and security personnel with them. Game Changer is the massive leap forward in capability that they need, but at a much lower cost than a larger yacht.”

Game Changer is built to speed ahead (thanks to its 22 knot capabilities) in complete ease and sets up the ideal escape for those on board the mother yacht in search of the best destinations, anywhere in the world.

“This is a very fast vessel, we can even go faster with bigger engines,” explains Victor Caminada, Marketing Director for AMELS when contemplating the toys on board, as well as the biggest toy in question, Game Changer. “This would fit typically a 70-110-metre superyacht, there are a lot of toys but it’s a serious boat.”

Space Game Changer has 250 square metres of open deck space for tenders and toys. The large deck crane makes logistics and handling simple, fast and safe. Below deck there is a further 110 square-metre storage space/dive centre. The YS 6911 has offices, facilities and accommodation for 22 crew and staff. It can carry a huge amount of extra provisions, fuel (marine, aviation and petrol), luggage and spare parts.

With no accommodation for owners, an additional attraction is the possibility of having anyone from helicopter pilots, submarine experts, rotational crew and myriad experts on board to fill any vacation with limitless possibilities.

“The crew has a good life. It’s important," adds Victor Caminada . "If you want the best crew you have to offer them the best working conditions and living space, and in a competitive crew market this is ideal for larger boats with crew that rotate. You’re always under tension as crew, and here you can relax and go to the gym and do things you can’t do on the mother yacht.”

For owners searching for the accommodation included in the exploration vessels, AMELS & DAMEN worked together to bring the answer forward, the SeaXplorer. Read more about the first vessel, which is begins first phases of construction tomorrow, here .

Technology Having just finished the sea trial programme, Game Changer crossed the 100 mile stretch from The Netherlands to London, testing the 22 knot speed as well as the comfort, quiet and capabilities of the Sea Axe range. Named for its innovative bow, there is extremely reduced feedback from the water at high-speeds meaning lower fuel costs and added economic benefits.

In fact, the Total Cost of Ownership on board Game Changer is significantly lower per square metre thanks to functional nature of the boat itself. Proving its popularity, Game Changer is the fourth Yacht Support vessel in the 70-metre segment following the delivery of Intrepid, ‘6711’ and Garçon.

The launch of Game Changer also follows last year’s delivery and sale of the 55-metre showcase vessel Fast & Furious (181 ft).

With its Yacht Support range, DAMEN is now the established leader in this rapidly developing niche. In total, 11 DAMEN Yacht Support vessels have been delivered or are in build.

"If you want the best crew you have to offer them the best working conditions and living space, and in a competitive crew market this is ideal for larger boats with crew that rotate. You’re always under tension as crew, and here you can relax and go to the gym and do things you can’t do on the mother yacht." Victor Caminada - Marketing Director, AMELS

"If you want the best crew you have to offer them the best working conditions and living space, and in a competitive crew market this is ideal for larger boats with crew that rotate. You’re always under tension as crew, and here you can relax and go to the gym and do things you can’t do on the mother yacht."

The deluge of work apps

From ADP to Workday, a tsunami of HR software is creating an enormous time suck.

game changer yacht fleet

So you decide to take a vacation from work . You ask your boss, get the go-ahead, and then realize you have no idea how to submit your vacation request. You can barely remember the name of the HR system your company uses, and when you search your inbox to jog your memory, the software you're confronted with makes you feel like you've never used a computer before. It's fine, though, because your boss doesn't even understand how to approve the request. A coworker mentions that, after fumbling around the site for what felt like forever, they couldn't even figure out how to find their salary in it. It almost feels like the person who built the app hasn't used a computer.

Maybe the above scenario is a slight exaggeration, but to work in America in the year 2024 is to drown in a sea of apps . If you want to take time off, there's an app for that. And it's different from the one where you sign up for benefits or submit expenses or handle reviews or do the mental-health exercises that it's honestly kind of weird your company is pushing on you. Everything is managed by a litany of largely indistinguishable software programs with nearly unpronounceable names that are impossible to navigate. For many workers, managers, and even HR professionals, they're deeply frustrating and an enormous time suck. The pandemic and the rise of remote work have only made the situation worse. According to a survey of 2,000 organizations by Sapient Insights Group, a research and advisory firm, companies now use an average of 21 HR "modules" — meaning various apps to conquer different tasks — up from 10.4 in 2019.

"You end up with what I call the 'kitchen drawer' of HR software," said Josh Bersin, a global HR analyst and CEO of The Josh Bersin Co., a consultancy. "You open the kitchen drawer, and you look in there, and you go, 'What's all this stuff doing in here? Where did we get it all?'"

How did we get here? For one thing, the HR-software market is a lucrative one; IBISWorld estimates it's worth $20 billion in the US. It has some big names — Workday , Oracle, ADP — but also a plethora of smaller businesses and platforms, all promising to make managing a workforce better. For companies, managing workers via software instead of human beings is an appealing prospect. Technology and automation have decoupled the size of the company from the number of people required to manage everyone: Instead of having one HR person for every 100 employees, you can, in theory, have one HR person for however big a company gets because of digital systems to handle the scale. The technology is ideally meant to make it so one HR professional can manage administration, compliance, and requests for many more workers than in the on-paper, in-person past.

"HR teams have become more and more lean," said Ashley Herd, the founder of Manager Method, a training platform for managers. "Frequently I talk to companies and they'll have 200, 500 employees, and there's really one or two dedicated HR people, so it's like an octopus." Herd added, "Even with all the technology in the world, an HR person's inbox is crazy."

If your price is going up by 10% every year, you have to have an explanation.

With fewer dedicated HR workers, many employees are left to fend for themselves. The problem is that each company has its own systems, and businesses aren't investing in training employees on those systems. They've also decimated the ranks of middle managers who might be able to help. People's tenures at work are shrinking, too, meaning that by the time they figure all the systems out, they're on to the next job. This all means that it takes employees longer to get up-to-speed at new gigs and start firing on all cylinders, productivity-wise, because they're wasting all this time figuring out how to do their jobs instead of just doing them.

"The front office now, in addition to doing its day job, has a proliferation of disparate solutions and disparate combinations of solutions at each company to familiarize with and learn how to use," said Zachary Chertok, a research manager for employee experience at IDC, a market-intelligence firm.

Whatever the software, the experience for employees is often not great. It feels like a lot of this stuff is designed for the back office without the front office in mind or by people who just don't really know what a good user experience would be. Management wants to know how many vacation days you took, and it doesn't care if you had fun putting them into the app, so the app designers tend to deprioritize UX for the frontline employees. Even the big, sprawling tools like UKG and ADP can't do everything — Harsh Kundulli, a senior director analyst in the HR practice at Gartner, a consultancy, told me that even companies that have invested in big human-capital-management systems still wind up having to use other HR software to fill in the gaps.

The issue isn't just the people making the programs — it's the companies buying them. Businesses often put various programs and apps in place without enough forethought. They worry about employee burnout, and instead of addressing what's going on with their workers, they toss them a mental-health app that no one will ever actually use. Different leaders come in with different ideas about which programs they do and don't like, and software providers have an incentive to constantly sell businesses new and different features. If your price is going up by 10% every year, you have to have an explanation.

"There are too many technology solutions out there, all claiming to have all kinds of overlapping capabilities," Kundulli said. "Many times, HR leaders do not have the insight into the market to be able to orchestrate or to combine the right types of technologies, so they often end up buying many technologies that have overlapping capabilities with redundancies."

Related stories

Leaders can get excited about niche systems, too, using the big software for, say, payroll and the smaller, specialized programs for employee training or the initial phases of recruiting. This swinging back and forth makes the whole thing even messier.

"There's this kind of ongoing cycle in software of bundling and then unbundling," said Tomer London, the cofounder of Gusto, a payroll and HR platform for small and midsize businesses. His company is in the business of trying to bundle features into something that is, as London put it to me, as "intuitive, easy to use, delightful" as Instagram, which does sound nice. And hey, maybe they'll get it figured out.

If the HR-software problem were easily solvable, it would probably already be solved. The experts I spoke with about fixes ranged from modestly optimistic to deeply pessimistic about the future of people management by robot. Companies aren't bringing sprawling HR departments back — they're too inefficient and expensive. It's not clear we want to go back to the kind of bad old days of the HR lady filling out your paperwork next to your desk anyway.

"When money's tight and they want to cut costs to demonstrate that they're being responsible to their shareholders, they will put in software," Carrie Bulger, an industrial-organizational psychologist at Quinnipiac University.

Some platforms put a layer over the top of various tools that puts them all in one place so that employees have one portal and don't realize how many different things they're dealing with. It's a sort of artificial Russian nesting doll situation. ServiceNow does that, and some companies have big-enough IT operations that they can create these products on their own, Bersin said — meaning their employees don't have to touch the shit software they're actually using.

AI's not going to fix all of this.

As with so many industries, artificial intelligence is also rearing its head. The hope in HR tech is that AI will be a game changer — that it will lead to a data-analysis revolution and create a fleet of digital assistants that can take care of annoying HR tasks so you don't have to. Some people I talked with envisioned AI-powered chatbots that can tell workers how to accomplish tasks — basically, you type in "Where do I see my pay stub?" or "How do I submit my expense report?" or maybe put in your vacation request and get it sent straight to your manager.

"Each tool will have its own version of a digital assistant," Chertok said. "In the near term, you're still going to have to know which system do I go to for what? But the how is not going to be as much of a challenge because the assistant's going to be there to help you through it."

That seems fine and good I suppose, but also, dealing with 10 little chatbots across 10 different tools is not wildly better than where we are. There's a race to see if someone can create a digital assistant to rule them all — Oracle or ADP or Microsoft's Copilot — but for now, there's no clear winner.

Not everyone is so gung ho about AI's potential. AI needs to have a somewhat clean data source where everything is linked and mapped out and connected, which is not a thing a lot of businesses, especially smaller ones, have. Who among us has tried to check some HR policy and been confronted with two dozen versions, the most up-to-date one impossible to tell? The AI might not be able to figure that out either.

"AI's not going to fix all of this until we sit down and go through the process of mapping and connecting the things we need to understand about our employees and what's going to do to our business," said Stacey Harris, chief research officer and managing partner at Sapient Insights Group. "There's so many layers of things that AI has to understand to then be able to predict what that person may or may not do. And each company has its own individual dataset."

Kundulli, from Gartner, said that the AI chatter in HR is at the peak of inflated expectations and that a lot of companies that have bought into the virtual assistants are experiencing buyer's remorse.

"These chatbots often devolved to being FAQs on HR policies," he said. "The results are not the kind of earth-shattering productivity gains that's often sold to HR leaders."

There is one uncomfortable truth here, which is that one way to cut down on the random apps and constant switching would be to have one or two killer solutions that everyone uses, like Microsoft Windows back in the day or Google for search. I'm not promoting a monopoly here, but also, you kind of get why people don't always hate them — they eliminate the hassles competition can create for consumers and can achieve levels of scale and efficiency that deliver people things they really like (see: Amazon in e-commerce). If every time you switched jobs you had the same HR system that you know how to use and that worked really well and remembered you, it would be kind of nice.

But it's not certain a monopoly would even work. Bersin pointed out that PeopleSoft, the IBM-backed HR-management system released in the late 1980s, was supposed to be the be-all and end-all, until it wasn't.

"Everybody loved it. It was really successful. But what they did is as they grew and they started to become very successful, they started to build more and more and more tools on top of it until it also became impossible to use," he said. "It's actually really hard to be a monopoly because the use cases are so varied by industry."

Bersin is in the camp that thinks a bit of disaster is inevitable. "It's going to be a competitive, dynamic, messy market forever, unfortunately," he said.

There are ways to make things better on the margins, but none is a panacea — or within employees' control. Companies can be more strategic about the tech that would be most useful, meaning they make a plan for what they're trying to accomplish. There are some investments that businesses could make to fix things, too — spending that extra 20% to customize the system or putting together readable training materials that actually explain how things work. Of course, that doesn't mean people are going to look at those materials or try to figure things out on their own. Candidly, I've had jobs where I've just given up on certain administrative tasks entirely because I couldn't figure out how to do them and got tired of trying.

And so here we are, doomed to sit in front of our computers wondering whether the "kudos" we were trying to give our coworker, maybe somewhat as a joke, on whatever stupid app that just got rolled out is worth it, as we're 20 minutes into the endeavor with no end in sight. Or maybe someday there will be some killer app that will do it all, or we'll get some AI-powered chatbot to talk to HR about our problems that will make us feel slightly less nuts.

Ukraine's Burgeoning Ground Drone Fleet Touts Major Advantage

U kraine's skies are cluttered with airborne drones, and developers and operators are looking elsewhere to beat out Russia in the drone race that has dominated the nearly two-and-a-half years of war in the country.

Kyiv is cultivating new ground drone fleets, which it hopes can give Ukrainian troops an edge over a more vast, better-resourced Russian Army by overcoming widespread and increasingly problematic jamming, Ukrainian personnel involved in the push for unmanned ground vehicles told Newsweek .

It is very difficult to jam a land robot, also known as unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) or ground drones, said Ruslan, a Ukrainian military expert who was among the first of Kyiv's operators to use the domestically-produced Ratel-S ground drone on the battlefield. Ruslan declined to give his surname for security reasons.

The world has looked on avidly at the battlefields of Ukraine, monitoring the rapid evolution of drone technology dominating the conflict since early 2022.

Ubiquitous airborne first-person-view, or FPV, drones are probably the most well-known, providing everything from reconnaissance to strike capabilities for both sides. Famous, too, are Ukraine's innovative naval drones, which are credited with putting a real dent in Russia's Black Sea fleet in and around Crimea.

UGVs attract far less attention but are a flourishing market. Ukraine's United24 platform is currently fundraising for "squads of robots" performing all kinds of roles, from evacuation to minelaying, as well as ferrying explosives towards a target and detonating.

"We see [UGVs] as the next game-changer in this war," said Nataliia Kushnerska, chief operations officer at the Ukrainian defense technology cluster, Brave1, which facilitates Kyiv's private sector working alongside its military to produce new defense tech.

"They are definitely important," agreed Ruslan.

Crucially, they are resistant to the jamming plaguing Moscow and Russia's airborne drones. In Ukraine, some ground drones used by the Russian military have a tethered connection to prevent signal jamming, and many being developed by the Russian industry and volunteers offer both a radio link and a tethered connection as an option, said Samuel Bendett of the CNA, a Washington-based nonprofit for research and analyses.

Signals sent to aerial drones from operators can be intercepted from all around, but ground drones are typically used within line of sight, noted Paul van Hooft, a research leader in defense and security at the European branch of the RAND think tank.

"Unlike the multiple directions from which the airborne drone could be jammed, it would be harder to jam the ground drone," van Hooft told Newsweek . The jammer is unlikely to be directly between the UGV and the drone's operator, he said.

"They have to be in line of sight, plus they need enough power to jam our controller, or our command point, our antennas," Ruslan said. "To jam them is a different level of complexity."

There are drawbacks, too. Tethers between UGVs and their operators may mean a strong connection, but they also restrict the drones to traveling short distances, Bendett told Newsweek .

With a direct line of sight, the signals battle natural terrain, hindered by hills, trees or ditches that provide a natural jamming, van Hooft added. These can also be physical obstacles tripping up wheeled or tracked UGVs.

"Ensuring stable and uninterrupted communication is one of the key challenges for all manufacturers," conceded Kushnerska, pointing specifically to the landscape. But Ukrainian developers are already working on using relay drones, or backup communication channels like Starlink, as well as artificial intelligence to overcome this, she told Newsweek .

Ukraine's digital transformation minister and drone tsar, Mykhailo Fedorov, said last month that Kyiv's Termite robot, built on a tracked chassis, was being used in "various areas" along the front line. He added that "with the use of repeaters, it can be controlled from a long distance while the soldier is in a safer place."

Expanding operations

The main plus of ground drones is pulling humans away from the most dangerous situations. They are being designed to strike targets, conduct reconnaissance missions, help out with logistics and evacuate injured personnel, all without putting soldiers directly in the line of fire.

"Ukrainian military forces are already actively using UGVs," Kushnerska said.

Kyiv's Volya-E robot has managed, so far, to evacuate more than 100 injured or killed Ukrainian soldiers, according to Ukrainian officials, while the Ratel-S blew up a bridge in the eastern Donetsk region that was key for Russian logistics along the front line, Kushnerska said.

Many developers in Ukraine are scaling up their operations, expanding their facilities to produce more ground drones. Against Russia's much larger pool of military recruits, mobilized defense industry and weapons donations from allies, Ukrainian personnel involved in developing and using the drones say it is vital Kyiv can more effectively leverage these ground robots to save lives.

"A full-fledged market for UGVs has now been established in Ukraine," Kushnerska added.

The Brave1 platform currently has more than 240 registered designs, with more than 160 Ukrainian manufacturers involved, Kushnerska said. Just three months ago, Kushnerska added, this number hovered at around 100.

There is an emerging trend, Ruslan said, toward making these ground drones multifunctional. The logic makes sense—a UGV is more useful if it can be utilized for mining or any other task before it is sent toward a target packed with explosives.

The race for innovation

Kyiv is keeping a close eye on Russia's own ground drone forces. "Ukrainian developers and military personnel are constantly analyzing the latest innovations in UGVs from the Russian army," Kushnerska said. "This allows for effective countermeasures and the improvement of our own developments."

"We are witnessing a similar pattern on both sides when it comes to UGV developments," Bendett previously told Newsweek .

Designs coming out of Ukraine have included experimental ground robots equipped with machine guns or kamikaze UGVs like the Ratel-S. Ukraine's Fedorov said last month that Ukraine is also using another version, the Ratel-H, for transporting multiple wounded soldiers at the same time.

Russia has its own host of ground drones, roughly matching many of the designs pursued by Ukraine, including the AI-enabled Marker and UGVs thought to be mainly useful for logistics.

Kyiv's 47th Mechanized Brigade said this spring that its airborne strike drones had taken out Russian UGVs with automatic grenade launchers operating around the Donetsk city of Avdiivka. The brigade's press service said in March that these were "isolated cases of Russian use of such equipment."

In recent days, Russian developers have shown off new, spider-like ground drones that can cope with tougher terrain while firing two machine guns.

Russia's UGVs are also harder for Ukraine to jam than Moscow's airborne drones, Ruslan said.

Ruslan, who was a civilian before Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, recounts how, within months of February 2022, he was operating kamikaze ground robots in hotspots along the front lines in the east, including the now Russian-controlled city of Bakhmut and just to the northeast, in Soledar.

Moscow and Kyiv were nearly neck and neck with the first ground drone prototypes he saw, Ruslan said. By August 2022, Ukraine was a matter of weeks ahead of Russia with its ground drone programs, he added.

Replacing FPVs?

Each ground drone is significantly more expensive than each disposable FPV drone launched into the air, Ruslan noted. Ratel drones, for example, can cost around five times what an FPV drone can be bought for, he said.

But they are a different tool, Ruslan said. Brave1's Kushnerska agreed, commenting: "It would not be entirely accurate to compare the importance of ground, aerial, and naval drones, as they serve different functions and are suited for various types of tasks."

Ground drones can carry far more explosives than FPV drones, but when used together, they can offer Ukraine's military options for how to tackle operations against Russia, while keeping operators at a distance from the front line

"It's just about the variety of instruments," Ruslan said.

By Rebecca Bradbury   9 November 2017

The 69m/227ft yacht support vessel ‘Game Changer’ is available for charter in the tropical cruising grounds of the Bahamas from the end of November.

Launched in February 2017, Game Changer is the newest member of the YSV6911 fleet from Dutch yard Damen . Joining the global charter fleet last month, she is now offering charter parties the chance to have unrivalled fun while cruising in the Bahamas.

Book this new build alone or in tandem with a traditional charter yacht and be one of the first to experience her endless benefits. There is surely no better way to undertake an island-hopping adventure in the gorgeous island chain this winter.

Guests making the ultimate entrance by helicopter can land on her certified helipad. The helicopter can then be lowered below deck into the safety of an enclosed hangar with refuelling facilities on hand.

Such a feature means the hassle, disruption and noise caused by a helicopter’s arrival and departure can be eliminated from the mothership when chartering in tandem.

With 250 square metres of open deck space, she is stocked with a huge selection of brand new water toys, and a large deck crane makes logistics and handling simple, fast and safe.

Plus, she can speed ahead to the next anchorage when on a private yacht charter and unload all the water toys before the mothership’s arrival. This opens up unrivalled opportunities for getting out on the water while on vacation.

Below deck there is a further 110 square metres of storage, offices and accommodation for 12 of the charterer’s staff. Therefore, if you are chartering superyacht Game Changer for extended periods this winter, she can carry a huge amount of extra provisions and fuel.

The vessel’s huge volume also means she can host around 250 guests for on-board parties. With high quality finishes and fairing, she is sure to wow all who step aboard for glittering event charters .

Other Damen support vessels available for charter include the 55m/180ft support vessel AD-VANTAGE and the 36m/119ft support vessel LARS .
