Royal Varuna Yacht Club celebrates 60 years of sailing history and tradition
Thailand’s famed Royal Varuna Yacht Club held a celebration for its 60th anniversary on Saturday, November 18 with over 200 members joining the gala dinner event held at the club’s ocean-side premises in South Pattaya.
The main dining terrace was resplendent in a 1950’s theme to reflect the period of the club’s inception. Jazz and classical style music was provided by the Royal Thai Navy band and a unique puppet performance brought additional entertainment for those in attendance.
“The Club is not merely the buildings, the land, the staff and its members. It is a true case where the sum is greater than the constituent parts,” said the Commodore. “I would like to mention a few members who have stood the test of time and have made very significant contributions to the heart of the Club almost since its inception and there are of course many others who have made significant contributions, these deserve recognition.”
He continued, “Angelo Gaultieri, who became Commodore 45 years ago, is a regular contributor on the committee and with the Phuket King’s Cup; Richard Van Den Heuvel is still a valuable member of the committee; Peter Cummins played a big part of putting RVYC on the map, both with his relationship with His Majesty the late King Bhumipol Adulyadej, but also his prolific writings about the Club in various media. Al Chandler has also been a very proactive supporter of junior sailing from being a president of International Optimist Dinghy Association (IODA) in the 1970s onwards to active and generous support throughout the years, including the latest IODA Optimist’s World Championships.”
The event was a memorable occasion, bringing members together in celebration of this milestone, which culminated with a spectacular fireworks show.
The Royal Varuna Yacht Club was founded in 1957 by HSH Bhisadej Rajani and Walter J. Meyer and other members at a time when Pattaya was little more than a sleepy little coastal village. A two-story wooden seaside house with a beach ideal for sail-boats was located as the site of the first Varuna clubhouse, now a restaurant close to Bali Hai pier.
As Pattaya began to develop and the concrete closed in, the Fourth Commodore, Rachot Kanjanavanit (l967-l970), secured the present site – one of the best on the Eastern Seaboard – designed the clubhouse and, in October, l967, led the move “over the hill” to Pratumnak. The modern new clubhouse is a more recent affair and was opened by His Majesty the current King, then the Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn in 2004.
His Majesty the Late King Bhumibhol Adulyadej and HRH Princess Ubolratana, both keen sailors, regularly sailed at Royal Varuna Yacht Club. His Majesty became an enthusiastic and skilful helmsman, tutored by Prince Bhisadej who assisted the King in building his own enterprise craft, the “Rajpatan”. One of the memorable outings was in March of l965 and consisted of a race from Varuna to Koh Larn, with the British Royal Consort Prince Phillip also participating as a guest sailor.
On September 14, 1968, His Majesty the late King, accompanied by HM the Queen, the Crown Prince and the Princesses, officially opened the Royal Varuna Yacht Club at its current location at Kasetsin Beach in South Pattaya.
During the following decades, a quantum leap in enthusiasm for yacht racing took place, with the original – mostly wooden – Fireballs and Enterprise sailing boats being replaced by the sleek Hobie Cats, single-handed Lasers and an assortment of other fiberglass catamarans. These craft require much less maintenance than the original classes, an important factor in the busy lifestyles evolving among the Thai and expat communities, reflecting a faster-moving world-at-large.
Ruchai Kanjanavanit, brother of Fourth Commodore Rachot, actually introduced the Optimist dinghy into Thailand in the early 1970s with the little dinghy carrying the auspicious number THA 1. It was shortly afterwards, however, that Al Chandler realized the potential of the Optimist craft for the training of juniors – and for helping ensure that a pool of young sailors was ready to move into adult classes. Al placed his time, his formidable drive and personal resources behind the development of the Optimist in Thailand.
Royal Varuna Yacht Club has given much time and effort to the development of youth sailing and will no doubt continue to do so. The Club has consistently co-operated with the Royal Thai Navy and the Junior Sailing Squadron of Thailand (JSST) and, makes RVYC facilities available for training, practice and racing.
With 450 members, Royal Varuna is a family oriented club for sailors of all abilities, from the uninitiated to serious racers. The Club offers a year-round sailing program with cruising and racing and also sailing tuition for adults in its extensive sailing program under RYA accreditation from the UK.

Visit Royal Varuna Yacht Club in Thailand
March 14, 2019
If you are travelling to Thailand – take the time to visit the Royal Varuna Yacht Club in Chonburi – Founded in 1957, the history of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club is, virtually, the history of yacht racing, sailing and cruising in Thailand. The club was originally located next to the only restaurant, at the southern end of Pattaya strip. The first race recorded was around an uncluttered Pattaya Bay of sparkling waters, where a motley fleet of Enterprises, Ospreys, a “prawn dinghy”, a 7-metre ‘folksboat’ and even a sailing canoe raced for the “Varuna Marine Trophy”. The first national championship recorded in the Kingdom was the Enterprise Nationals, held at the Varuna Marine Club in 1962.
Sit at their open air bar and enjoy a selection of cold beers, cocktails or soft drinks while watching the sailboats or a stunning sunset over Koh Larn. On site accommodation is also available – www.varuna.org
The Squadron shares reciprocity with a number of other yacht clubs within Australia and around the world. Some of these clubs operate under a formal arrangement and may require a Letter of Introduction, this can be provided by calling the Squadron Administration Office – 3396 8666. Generally though, presentation of your membership card will suffice. A list of our current reciprocal clubs can be found on our website – https://www.rqys.com.au/members/reciprocal-clubs/

The following is a sponsored/advertorial. The article and opinions are their own.
Summer Sailing at Varuna
The pandemic has meant that an overseas summer holiday is not going to be possible this year and both Thais and expatriate residents are looking at holiday and leisure options in the country.
For Bangkok residents the preferred destinations are within 2 to 3 hours of the city.
One of Thailand’s less well known gems is the Royal Varuna Yacht Club in Pattaya.
The family friendly, members only sailing club is located on the beach near the Royal Cliff Hotel.
The club is for beach launched boats, both catamarans and monohulls.
Qualified instructors train both children and adults from beginners to experienced sailors in Thai and English. There is no need to own a boat to join, as the club has rental boats.
The club has a restaurant, accommodation and swimming pool.
“It’s a perfect escape from Bangkok.Learning to sail is a great activity for children to get out in a healthy environment, in a sport where it’s possible to maintain social distancing “said Susan Williams, mother of two children who learned to sail at RVYC . “It’s safe for kids both on and off the water “.
“RVYC is a fantastic family facility for all age groups and nationalities “said Mrs. Koravic Bhanubandh Na Ayudhaya who spent her childhood weekends sailing at RVYC and whose son now also sails at Varuna.
Membership of the club is open to all regardless of sailing experience.
There are over 400 members of 40 nationalities.
“People are sometimes put off by the name” yacht club “but this is not a big fancy marina just a great facility for families, recognized as being one of the best small sailing clubs in the world “said Barry Osborne the General manager.
The club is for members only but membership fees are reasonable and available for both individuals and families.
“During this time of severe travel restrictions on travel, learning to sail at Royal Varuna Yacht Club is a great opportunity to pick up a lifelong skill in a healthy environment “

Royal Varuna Yacht Club to host ILCA 6 and ILCA 7 Masters World Championships in 2023
The Royal Varuna Yacht Club (RVYC) has secured the rights to hold ILCA 6 and ILCA 7 Masters Worlds in Pattaya, Thailand, in February 2023 - and that's only 8 months away.
ILCA 6 and 7 are the classes which were previously called Laser Radial and Laser Standard. It is expected that between 150-200 sailors will attend each event, so it will be huge, even by the lofty standards of past RVYC events. Having these numbers of competitors in Thailand will, of course, bring benefits to the area and potentially the country, as many will undoubtably take the opportunity to see other parts of Thailand when they are here to race.
ILCA 6 Masters Worlds starts on Wednesday February 8, 2023, with ILCA 7 following suit on Saturday February 18. Full details will be posted at sailing.laserinternational.org/site/events-list when available.
The Master sailors from RVYC are stepping up to the challenge by organizing 2/3 day training weekends on the third or fourth weekend of each month for the remainder of 2022. The sailors have been promised Masters-specific coaching from Veerasit Puangnak (Lim) who represented Thailand in the Laser class at the Sydney Olympics 2000, supplemented by guest coaches. So far the maximum number of participants is 22, but numbers are expected to grow from September onwards, now that it is easy to travel to Thailand again. For those not quite up to date - since 01 May, international travellers are welcome in Thailand as long as they are fully vaccinated. There are no other pre-conditions for entry to The Land of Smiles.
These weekends are open for all Masters ILCA sailors (age 30+), for the modest fee of 1,200 baht (USD 35) for a two-day weekend or 1,800 baht (USD 52) on a three-day weekend. Charter boats are available, either for the weekends, or for the entire training period, with or without the Masters Worlds events.
A typical weekend could consist of longer courses/exercises (Friday); working on starts and specific skills (Saturday, two sessions), and racing/individual coaching (Sunday). Over the 13 months the programme is running, training has already started with particular focus on boat handling and skills development, and will move towards starts, speed, and race craft closer to the Worlds. It will also be feasible to participate in two or three major Thai races throughout the year, not to mention the Thailand Nationals which will be scheduled immediately prior to the Masters Worlds in order to encourage more international competitors to participate.
Highly convenient accommodation is available at RVYC at very reasonable rates, and - most importantly - there will be free refreshments at the RVYC Beach Bar after each Saturday's de-brief.
If you want to take part in the coaching, contact the Varuna sailors on

History of Moscow Oblast
The territory of the Moscow region was inhabited more than 20 thousand years ago. In the first millennium AD, this land was inhabited mostly by the Finno-Ugric peoples (Meryane and Meshchera). In the 9th-10th centuries, the Slavs began active development of the region. The population was engaged in hunting, fisheries, agriculture, and cattle breeding.
In the middle of the 12th century, the territory of the present Moscow region became part of the Vladimir-Suzdal principality, the first towns were founded (Volokolamsk in 1135, Moscow in 1147, Zvenigorod in 1152, Dmitrov in 1154). In the first half of the 13th century, the Vladimir-Suzdal principality was conquered by the Mongols.
In the 14th-16th centuries, Moscow principality became the center of unification of Russian lands. The history of the Moscow region is inextricably linked to military events of the Time of Troubles - the siege of the Trinity-Sergius Monastery by the troops of False Dmitry II, the first and second militias.
More historical facts…
In 1708, by decree of Peter the Great, Moskovskaya gubernia (province) was established. It included most of the territory of present Moscow oblast. In 1712, St. Petersburg became the capital of the Russian Empire and the significance of the Moscow region as the country’s economic center began to decrease.
In 1812, the Battle of Borodino took place near Moscow. It was the biggest battle of the Russian-French War of 1812. In the second half of the 19th century, especially after the peasant reform of 1861, the Moscow province experienced economic growth. In 1851, the first railway connected Moscow and St. Petersburg; in 1862 - Nizhny Novgorod.
The population of the Moscow region increased significantly (in 1847 - 1.13 million people, in 1905 - 2.65 million). On the eve of the First World War, Moscow was a city with a population of more than one million people.
In November, 1917, the Soviet power was established in the region. In 1918, the country’s capital was moved from St. Petersburg to Moscow that contributed to economic recovery of the province. In the 1920s-1930s, a lot of churches located near Moscow were closed, a large number of cultural monuments were destroyed. On January 14, 1929, Moscow Oblast was formed.
In 1941-1942, one of the most important battles of the Second World War took place on the territory of the region - the Battle for Moscow. In the postwar years, the growth of economic potential of the region continued; several science cities were founded (Dubna, Troitsk, Pushchino, Chernogolovka).
In the 1990s, the economy of Moscow Oblast experienced a deep crisis. Since the 1990s, due to the motorization of the population and commuting, road traffic situation in the Moscow region significantly deteriorated. Traffic jams have become commonplace.

Moscow Oblast - Features
Moscow Oblast is located in the central part of the East European Plain, in the basin of the rivers of Volga, Oka, Klyazma, Moskva. The region stretches from north to south for 310 km, from west to east - 340 km. It was named after the city of Moscow, which however is not part of the region. Part of the administrative authorities of the region is located in Krasnogorsk.
On the territory of the Moscow region, there are 77 cities and towns, 19 of them have a population of more than 100 thousand people. The largest cities are Balashikha (518,300), Podolsk (309,600), Mytishchi (262,700), Khimky (256,300), Korolyov (225,300), Lubertsy (209,600), Krasnogorsk (174,900), Elektrostal (149,000), Odintsovo (138,900), Kolomna (136,800), Domodedovo (136,100).
The climate is temperate continental. Summers are warm, winters are moderately cold. The average temperature in January is minus 10 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 19 degrees Celsius.
One of the most important features of the local economy is its proximity to Moscow. Some of the cities (Odintsovo, Krasnogorsk, Mytishchi) have become in fact the “sleeping districts” of Moscow. The region is in second place in terms of industrial production among the regions of Russia (after Moscow).
The leading industries are food processing, engineering, chemical, metallurgy, construction. Moscow oblast has one of the largest in Russia scientific and technological complexes. Handicrafts are well developed (Gzhel ceramics, Zhostov trays, Fedoskino lacquered miniatures, toy-making).
Moscow railway hub is the largest in Russia (11 radial directions, 2,700 km of railways, the density of railways is the highest in Russia). There are two large international airports - Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo. Vnukovo airport is used for the flights within the country.
Attractions of Moscow Oblast
