All the charm of a sleepy fishing village with the glamorous allure of a yachting destination

With its mountainous setting and elegant atmosphere, Gocek is understandably a favourite of the discerning traveller. Set between Fethiye and Dalyan in the Fethiye District, this Turkish town is set apart on the Lycian coast by its location within a beautiful private bay which is dotted with coves, working their way up into winding hills and white washed villages.

Restrictions on the height of buildings make the view from any yacht floating off the shores spectacular, and the blanket of trees covering the hills that have given the area National Park status give this place a unique atmosphere. It has all the charm of a sleepy Mediterranean fishing village but the poets and artists that have fallen in love with it over many years have ensured its glamorous allure to the rich and famous.

Gocek itself lacks its own sandy beach, meaning it hasn’t become a tourist trap during the summer months and instead remains one of the premiere yachting destinations in the East Mediterranean . Scattered like jewels in the sea, these emerald isles are covered in forests and the scent of pine trees – perfect for discovering caves, relaxing on hidden beaches and snorkelling in the warm waters. 7 days - Fethiye Bay: On this trip you can explore the coastline of the Lycian coast and islands without travelling very far from Gocek itself. On the eastern corner of the bay is Butterfly Bay, named for its insect residents and only accessible by sea. Old Deniz is famed for its beaches. The ancient ruins of the Lycians can be found in Fethiye itself (rock tombs and theatre) as well as aptly named Tomb Bay. For those after a bit of holiday fun, the holiday resort of Marmaris is a short trip to the west.

14 days - Explore the Turquoise Coast: This starts with a reach south east towards Kekova Roads where you will find quiet anchorages and one-restaurant-bays. Do pause at Fethiye for its ancient ruins and Turkish Riviera buzz. Island hop among the Turkish island that could include Dockyard Island, St Nicholas Island and Baba Island (rabbit stew may be a delight). Heading NW you can get as far as Marmaris and its buzzing nightlife and then return via various quiet anchorages and islands to Gocek.

Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Gocek

The sailing season runs from April to October in Gocek. July and August are the busiest months for a Gocek yacht charter. This is also when the NE wind the Meltemi peaks in strength. Though this makes for a cooling blast from the fierce heat of summer.

With the Meltemi less powerful outside of the peak season - and the marinas and sailing waters less crowded - it may pay off to do a sailing holiday either later in the year or earlier - if you can get out in May or October you may find things calmer both in terms of crowds and winds!

July and August are the busiest times of year for a Turkish yacht charter. However the Meltemi is at its strongest, the air is at its hottest and the marinas most expensive at this time of year. It is still quite hot in September (hotter than a Northern European summer) so you will enjoy Gocek when it is quieter, cooler and the winds less powerful.

Do you have to pay a deposit when hiring a Yacht in Gocek?

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.
