Review of Compass 31

Basic specs..

Both the hull and the deck is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all. The hull is a double hull which improves the indoor climate. Especially when the water is colder than the air in the cabin, then the double hull insulates against cold water and reduce the condense water in the cabin. The deck is a double deck which improves the indoor climate.

The boat is equipped with 7-8 berths, a galley, 200.0 liter fresh water capacity and toilet facility.

The boat equipped with a ketch rig. A ketch rig is generally considered easier to handle, because the sails are smaller, and because it can sail on most points to the wind with one sail completely taken down for repair or while reefing. The sail configuration of a ketch allows for better comfort and stability when sailing downwind or on a broad reach.

The Compass 31 is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.

The keel is made of lead. Compared with iron, lead has the advantage of being 44% heavier, which allows a smaller keel and hence less water resistance and higher speed.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.40 - 1.50 meter (4.59 - 4.89 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Compass 31 is typically equipped with an inboard Volvo Penta engine at 36 hp (26 kW). The speed is 8.0 knots.

The transmission is a shaft drive. A shaft drive will in the long run require less maintenance than other types of drive e.g. a sail drive.

The fuel tank, which is made of fibreglass, has a capacity of 155.0 liters (40 US gallons, 34 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Compass 31 is 1.77, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.1 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Compass 31 is about 176 kg/cm, alternatively 988 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 176 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 988 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Broker's Comments

This boat packs in an awful lot being a Cutter, Ketch rigged Compass 31 built in Norway, by Norsk Veritas. There has been a considerable amount spent on her over the years, including a new Vetus M4.15 32 HP diesel engine and extensive navigation equipment with the Ray marine system linked to the Sea Talk Radar, chart plotter, depth, speed, wind and auto pilot. There is also a Vetus bow thruster with remote control. Six berths in three cabins with two heads and separate basin for the aft cabin, spacious saloon and a well laid out galley.

Best Marine Compass: Going the Right Way Cheaply

compass 31 sailboat

If you're serious about sailing, you know that a reliable compass can make all the difference. I've tested many compasses and read tons of reviews of other sailors, and here are my absolute favorites.

On this page:

Which marine compass should i get for my sailboat, why i picked the ritchie navigation explorer, important factors when buying a compass, what should you look for in a quality compass, some quality compass brands to consider.

I recommend the Ritchie Navigation Explorer (click to check current price on Amazon ) - This compass is competitively priced, good looking, simple, reliable and rugged. Bracket mount (which I like). Also called the B51, it's the all-round best compass for most people. Best bang for the buck.

This is the compass I currently have and it's my all-time favorite. It's incredibly accurate - just like its predecessor, which was also a Ritchie.

If you don't want a bracket mount, here are some alternatives:

  • Ritchie S-53 Explorer (click to check current price on Amazon ) - Surface mounted, making it ideal for smaller boats - still a well-priced, reliable, and good-looking compass. Also has a night light.
  • Ritchie F-82W Voyager (click to check current price on Amazon ) - Flush mounted, and one of the most beautiful compasses you can get for a reasonable price. Best quality. Has power damp, meaning it's more stable. Is said to be extremely accurate. You could also take a look at the Ritchie FNW-203 Navigator. It's even more beautiful (but way too expensive for what you get in functionality, in my opinion).
  • Ritchie Navigation Globemaster (click to check current price on Amazon ) - Binnacle mount: it looks amazing. But oh man, that's an expensive compass.

I know, it's all Ritchie here - but what can I say? They provide very good value for money. Other compass brands tend to get pretty expensive, and the folks at Ritchie just really deliver. I never needed something else, to be honest.

I had an older model before (I'm not quite sure which one) and just wanted the same one, but new. I like the bracket mount, it provides more stability, and it's easy to install and adjust.

  • Accurate compass, even when distorted by magnetic fields
  • Has corrector magnets, allowing you to calibrate it
  • Has dampening and gimbal for stabilization
  • Has a night light - light isn't too bright
  • Easy to mount (simply fasten two bolts)
  • Analog, so reliable
  • Ritchie Compasses come with a 5-year warranty - even if I can use this compass for just five years, that's money well spent
  • Bracket mount gives you more mounting options
  • I like front reading cards
  • If it breaks, it can most likely repair it myself

Cons: it is a pretty big compass, but it will still fit most small sailboats. The housing is plastic, but it's durable.

There are two major factors two consider: mounting and size.

Mounting method

Choosing the right mounting method for you makes all the difference. The three most common mounting methods are:

  • Bracket mount
  • Flush mount
  • Surface mount
  • Binnacle mount

Bracket mount - the compass rests in a bracket. Bracket mounts can be mounted in the helm or on deck. I prefer this mounting method. They are easy to install and keep the compass card at the right viewing angle. Flush mount - the compass rests inside the dashboard. Less easy to install, but man ... it looks good. Surface mount - the compass sits on top of the dashboard. Very easy to install and looks pretty decent for most compasses with a low profile. Binnacle mount - the compass has it's own casing. Looks great and all, but takes up a lot of space and is a lot of work to install properly.

Choosing the right size is just as important. Most smaller to mid-sized compasses are between 4-5 inches wide. You don't want a huge compass in a tiny helm, but you also want to be able to read it easily. The method of mounting also plays a large role here.

For small sailboats (under 20 ft) I'd recommend getting a small surface-mounted compass.

  • Accuracy - there's no way of knowing the accuracy upfront, except by relying on brand reputation and other people's experience.
  • Reliability - a compass is your most important navigation tool and should continue to work in all conditions .
  • Dampener - high-quality compasses have a dampener under the card - this keeps them from wiggling on sea.
  • Corrector magnets - you'll find the corrector magnets inside the compass housing. You can use them to adapt the compass to the magnetic fields from the electronics and materials on your boat.
  • Gimbal system - a gimbal system makes sure your card stays level.
  • Design - it has to look good. You'll be staring at this thing A LOT.
  • Durability - a compass should be able to withstand the weather and last you a decade.
If you want a detailed look at how a boat compass works, you can read my Beginners Guide on Boat Compasses here (new tab)

I admit, I'm a fan of Ritchie. But there are other reputable brands that make great compasses out there:

  • Ritchie - well-known and reputable brand
  • Silva - Garmin is best known for producing quality marine electronics, but they also make pretty decent marine compasses under their brand Silva.
  • Seattle Sports - not a well-known brand, but they have produced accurate compasses in the past.

Although there are some great looking compasses out there, most of them are just too expensive in my opinion. Ritchie seems to have fixed that problem by providing a great quality compass with good warranty at a very decent price. If you're looking for a simple and clean compass, and don't want to pay top bill, I recommend the Ritchie Navigation Explorer (click to go to Amazon ).

If you're looking for good quality sailing gear, I have other articles like this one. You can check them out on the recommended gear section of this site. It has all the sailing gear I love most.

DETUCK Boat Compass

DETUCK’s Boat Compass is an indispensable tool for nautical navigation, seamlessly indicating your forward direction via its red indicator line. Instead of the conventional compass that points to the geomagnetic north, it dynamically shows the direction you’re heading, providing comprehensive navigational aid (for optimal performance, the compass needs level positioning and freedom from magnetic interferences). The compass shines, quite literally, with its night lighting feature. By wiring to an external 12V power supply, the compass illuminates with a soft red light, enhancing visibility during night-time journeys. But if you’re like many of us and daylight voyages are more your speed, you do have the option to skip this connection.

The compass also offers an impressive magnetic declination adjustment feature. By utilizing the two provided holes, you can fine-tune the compass’s accuracy in both east-west and north-south directions, perfect for those seeking precision in their travels. Its easy-mount design means you’ll have it set up and ready in no time. Supplied with double-sided tape and screws, the compass adheres securely to your boat’s dashboard. As for accuracy, while sudden, continuous movements could momentarily disturb the compass’s alignment, it promptly repositions and corrects its direction.

  • Magnetic declination for proper accuracy
  • Red light illumination
  • Simple installation
  • Not always accurate

The Best Boat Compass Buying Guide

Navigating confidently across waters is a crucial aspect of any boating expedition, be it a leisure trip or a fishing adventure. The key to seamless navigation is having the right boat compass by your side. This buying guide will explore how to choose the best compass for your needs, with a focus on vital attributes such as accuracy, ease of reading, mounting options, and more.

Accuracy isn’t just about pointing towards the north but offering precise readings that allow you to navigate effectively. The magnetic needle or dial should respond swiftly and accurately to changes in direction. Look for compasses with a high degree of sensitivity and those that have been precisely balanced and aligned. Remember, an inaccurate compass can lead you astray, while a reliable one keeps your voyage on track.

When cruising on waters, your compass will be exposed to various elements. As such, it needs to be sturdy and weather-resistant. It should withstand exposure to extreme temperatures, saltwater, and sunlight without compromising its functionality or visibility. A high-quality boat compass is built with durable materials like high-grade plastic, brass, or even glass that offer longevity and reliable performance.

Ease of Reading

A boat compass must be easy to read, especially in challenging conditions. For clear visibility, the compass should feature large, bold numbers and letters and a contrasting background. And a built-in illumination system is also essential for night-time sailing. Some models even feature a red LED light that preserves your night vision while ensuring the compass readings are clearly visible.

Mounting Options

Your boat compass should be installed in a location where it’s easily visible and accessible, but not in the way of other operations. So consider the available mounting options. There are surface-mounted, flush-mounted, and bracket-mounted compasses. Surface-mounted compasses are easy to install but may take up more space. Flush-mounted compasses offer a sleek look but require a cut-out on your console. Bracket-mounted compasses offer flexibility in placement but may not be as secure. Choose a type that complements your boat’s design and your personal preference.

Lastly, the price of the boat compass plays a significant role in your decision. High-end models with advanced features and superior build quality will naturally be pricier. But, there are also affordable options that offer reliable performance. As always, it’s essential to strike a balance between quality and cost-effectiveness. Set a budget that suits you but doesn’t compromise on the essential features of accuracy, durability, and ease of reading.

People Also Asked

With proper care and maintenance, a good quality boat compass can last for many years, even decades. But, it's important to regularly check the compass for accuracy and signs of wear.

A small bubble in your boat compass can occur due to changes in temperature or altitude, and it usually doesn't affect the compass's accuracy. Of course, a large bubble can indicate that the compass is leaking its damping fluid, which requires repair or replacement.

Yes, a boat compass can typically work on any boat, whether it's a small kayak, a fishing boat, or a large yacht. But, larger boats may benefit from larger, more elaborate compasses with more features.

Regular maintenance for a boat compass includes cleaning the compass with a gentle cloth and mild cleaner, avoiding harsh chemicals that could damage the compass. It's also important to regularly check the compass for inaccuracies or issues with the gimbal (the component that allows it to tilt).

A boat compass is a reliable backup to a GPS. GPS systems rely on power and satellite connections, which can fail or be unreliable in certain areas. A boat compass, on the other hand, relies only on Earth's magnetic field.

Best fixed compasses: 6 options for binnacle and bulkhead mounted units

  • Andrew Dare
  • March 27, 2023

Every sailor needs a reliable and dependable fixed compass in the cockpit, allowing safe navigation while keeping on a straight heading. We pick out 6 of the best fixed compasses, both binnacle and bulkhead mounted....

best-fixed-compasses

Fixed compasses are an essential piece of kit that every yacht needs. They are especially good in this day and age, as they do not need any electrical power to run.  They can get you where you are going and back home again safely, even in the event of an onboard power outage.

Under the compass card is a small magnet which lines up north/south using the Earth’s magnetic field. Then the whole compass is encased in a damping fluid to give a stable heading at sea.

Many things may alter the compass alignment. Deviation is caused by onboard metal, such as  your engine, cockpit speakers and even the wires supplying power to your compass light. Consequently, all compasses then need to be adjusted using small compensating magnets inside the compass. Usually, this needs the hand of an experienced compass adjuster, during a process called “swinging the compass”.

Compass s tyles

Traditionally, binnacle compasses are mounted directly in front of the wheel. These compasses have a flat card, which is only viewed from above. Usually they are mounted on a platform, to raise them up from the pivot point of the wheel. Also they tend to be larger, giving a clearer vision.

Smaller yachts and those with tiller steering, usually have bulkhead-mounted compasses at the front of the cockpit, to one side of the companionway. One advantage of these, is they mostly come with a built in clinometer, showing your angle of heel. Knowing this, also helps you to decide when to put that reef in. Many of these have hybrid dials. This allows you to read the compass from above, as well as when stood in the cockpit at the helm. The downside is, you need a hole to be cut in your boat to fit the compass.

If you are in interested in the best hand bearing compasses , we’ve covered them off in a separate feature.

What to Look for in a Sailing Compass

There are various factors you should take into consideration when attempting to buy a sailing compass. You would likely want to read user reviews and potentially test one out yourself to get a feel for what you need.

In addition you should also narrow down your sailing goals to determine what is going to work best for your situation. Buying a sailing compass simply because you think it looks cool is not going to help your situation out on the water.

Size of the Compass

In my experience you should aim for a sailing compass that has a large diameter. It needs to be able to fit properly onto your dashboard at the helm so that you have and easier time reading it.

If it is large enough you can read the numbers easier when the boat is in rough conditions. It does not necessarily have to have a backlight but that would help especially at night.

Various Mounting Options

Depending on the type of boat and the sailing compass you choose it might have different options for mounting it. Various mounting options exist for those that want to mount it a certain way.

Space on the Dashboard

This installation is simply on the dash of your boat if applicable. You will need to cut out and fit a section of the dash in order to keep it secure and it makes it permanent.

Flat Surface Areas

Installing on the surface is likely the easiest and quickest since you can simply place it and be done. A surface mount can either be flat somewhere at the helm or horizontally at the best spot. This also prevents you from having to cut out a section of the dash.

Using Brackets

If your sailing compass comes with brackets this will allow you to place anywhere you desire with some installation required. A bracket mount will typically allow you to move the compass slightly to get a better read and is ideal for placing in vertical spots.

Mounting it Flush

A flush mount installation is where you cut a hole in your dash and expose just enough of the compass to read it. Some sailing compasses are more attractive looking when you install it this way but it does take a little more time than standard surface installations.

Binnacle Mounting

Choosing a binnacle mount is another option that is referred to as a “little house” for the compass. This helps keep it out of the elements or sunlight and are typically larger.

A majority of the sailing compasses you see on the market have a backlight and it is a handy feature if you are in lower light conditions. You will likely need to have it close to a power supply for a lot of these but some come equipped with a slight illumination already to make it easier to read.

Various Types of Dials

There are a few dial options to consider when selecting your sailing compass. Each one could appeal to you based on the way you prefer to read it.

Direct Dial for Upright View

A direct dial has the lubber line in an aft position and are best suited for helms that are closer to eye level when sailing. It is recommended that you have plenty of experience reading this type of dial since it requires some knowledge beforehand.

Dial with Flat Card

A flat card dial has to be read while you are standing or sitting in a seat above the helm since it features a horizontal face. The lubber line is forward so you would need to have the right angle when looking at it.

Hybrid dials are likely what you are thinking which is a mix between direct and flat. These allow you to read the compass from nearly any direction. These are best if you are needing to see the direction from any part of the boat and if you are newer to reading a compass.

Your Knowledge

If you have never used a compass before it will likely take a slight learning curve to get used to it. Consider purchasing one that you can either read from any direction or has simple but precise markers in order to get an accurate reading. Sailors that have plenty of experience might be able to read any compass no matter the quality.

How Does a Sailing Compass Work?

A compass is an essential tool for your boat to help guide you safely during any event at sea. This is especially important because if your power fails on your boat you can use your compass to help navigate back to safety.

How it Operates

Beneath the compass card is a tiny magnet that keeps north and south in line with the help of the Earth’s magnetic field. The compass is encapsulated with a fluid to help keep it stable upon moving on the boat. These are typically an analogue compass but some digital ones do exist usually as a handheld version.

Deviation Process

Deviation is a term used to describe when a compass is thrown off of its accurate reading due to other magnetic influences or too much metal interfering with it. You will need to read the manual or check with a qualified professional to help get it back in check.

Various Styles

Your boat will likely need a specific compass to make it worth the investment. As mentioned a binnacle compass is best for when the view is above and it is likely mounted on the wheel.

Smaller boats that utilize tiller steering are best suited with bulkhead mount that are located at the front of the cockpit. These also generally help with determining the angle of the heel the boat is experiencing.

In other words you should conduct the proper amount of research to best fit your needs. Your budget and boat type will play a crucial role in determining the best one. Your sailing experience can also make an impact on the buying process to help find the best tactical scale on the water.

I'd like to get a compass for my boat. I bet there are a lot of good ideas and advice here. It needs to be small but easy to read while hiking out. Preferably something which could be installed on the main sheet block post or just abaft the mast (I've attached a couple of pictures to hopefully show the configuration of the cockpit).

Hello, I use a Sunto Orca Kayak compass. http://www.katerno.com/detail.php?s=80295

I suggest you go to www.westmarine.com and look at the compasses on their website, or www.defender.com . then choose one that looks right for you.

How about this? http://sailcare.com/compass.shtml Rich

That micro compass looks to be your ticket, since you'd likely be hiking out on both sides of the boat.

or you could put the compass on your wrist: http://www.gillna.com/watches/watches.php Avaiable from most sailing equipment shops, eTailers and ebay

Hand held compasses are not for steering, they are for taking bearings on other objects. Both Potomac Daysailer's hands are extremely busy when sailing his ultra cool dinghy so it's much too inconveninent (or inaccurate) to mess with a handheld or wrist mount. He needs an easily visible compass that is fixed to the boat so he can check his heading with a quick glance. The digital style compasses (Tacktick) are popular with racers because they memorize the previous heading. That allows the skipper to more easily determine wind shifts.... otherwise, with a magnetic you must use your memory. For tactics, they may use a handheld compass or use predetermined angles drawn on cards affixed to the boat that allow them to determine laylines, judge whether they can pass or not, and know whether they're ahead or behind the competition. I forgot to mention earlier than another solution is to purchase two small flushmount compasses, such as the type kayakers use, and put one each rail. I, myself, would prefer one large compass in the middle that could be seen from every part of the cockpit. That's why I like the tacktick so much... but it's like $500 after you buy the mounting bracket. In any event, the most important consideration is that the compass must be easily visible yet not distract the skipper from his steering duties. That is why you see digitals mounted on the mast, below the boom, and magnetics mounted high on the dashboard as close to eye level as possible. PS...Another option is to purchase a simple, lightweight handheld GPS... the Garmin 76, for example. Not a chartplotter. And either strap it to your wrist or mount it on the dashboard at eye level.. then set the largest display(two features) to show course/heading and speed.

Most of my sailing is within sight on land and just knowing the bearing of a landmark is all I need most of the time. If a fog rolls in the game changes and my compass helps to guide me to that landmark or nav mark. I believe that all boats should have a fixed mount compass.

I saw a couple on Ebay this morning. They seemed to be very reasonably priced with a "Buy Now" option.
