Sailing Itineraries from Lefkas

From our base in Lefkas one week charters typically head south towards Kefalonia and Zakynthos or north towards Corfu including mainland harbours like Syvota and Parga. Two week charters give time to cover more area or simply spend more time exploring the spots you are visiting. Below we present a sample one week itinerary of our favourite southern route.

The Southern Ionian Islands

Known for relatively mild winds during the summer, the Ionian Sea is a sailing playground ideal for smooth sailing and family vacation, featuring endless swimming and idyllic nights in isolated bays of unique beauty . Lefkas island itself is full of tranquil coves and bays which one could spend many day exploring!

To the south of Lefkas lies the island of Kefalonia, and a little further Zakynthos. Both are large, well-known touristic islands with a ton of fun things to do , beautiful places to visit, turquoise waters to dive in, and historic sites to visit . On the way from Lefkas to Kefalonia there are many smaller islands well worth a visit, including the amazing Ithaki and the smaller islands of Kalamos and Kastos of the mainland coast.

The Northern Ionian Islands

To the north of Lefkas lies Corfu (where we have our Corfu charter base ), the largest of the Ionian islands, and hands-down the most cosmopolitan of them all . Over the course of its long and distinguished history, Corfu, or Kerkyra, has experienced Italian, French and English rule, each leaving a very distinct imprint on the island and its inhabitants. A mixture of different civilizations and cultures blended together into an amalgam that is undoubtedly Greek in character, and yet truly unique from the rest of Greece.

Heading towards Corfu will usually take you through the mainland ports of northern Greece, including Syvota and Parga , and allowing you to explore the amazing islands of Paxoi and Antipaxoi along the way.

A One Week Sailing Itinerary from Lefkas Day 1: Lefkas to Meganissi (10-15 nautical miles, 2-3 hours sailing)

Today, we set sail from Lefkas marina, heading south through the canal that separates Lefkas island from the mainland. As we leave the canal, we see the rocky islet of Volios on our left and the castle of Agios Georgios on the mainland coast.

Consider stopping at the charming coves and beaches on the mainland coast (Aspros Gialos, Marathia, Varko beach) before continuing south. Alternatively, visit Skorpios , known for its green waters and rumored to be Jackie Kennedy's favorite island . Be aware of the thermal wind during midday hours and the Chiromytis reef near Skorpios, which requires careful navigation.

Our destination for the night is the picturesque Vathi on Meganissi island , with two docking options: the private Odyseas Marina or the small free harbor at the bottom of the bay. Depths here are suitable for various boat sizes. Enjoy traditional fish taverns, beach bars, and the natural beauty of the area. Other overnight options include Spilia , Atherinos , or Kapsali .

Day 2: Meganissi to Ithaca - Vathi (20 nautical miles, 3-4 hours sailing)

Start the day with a refreshing morning swim at Desimi Beach Bay , just 3nm west of Vathi. Next, visit the southern part of Meganisi and the famous Papanikoli Cave , named after a Greek World War II submarine. Be aware however that anchoring is not suitable in this area.

Be cautious of the thermal wind that occurs during midday hours and stronger winds near Vathi, as they arise from the central part of Ithaca island. Today's overnight destination is either Vathi , the capital of Ithaca island, or the picturesque Kioni . While Kioni offers a peaceful ambiance, beautiful beaches, and lush forest hikes, the cosmopolitan Vathi caters to those seeking more lively entertainment . Before reaching Ithaca, consider stopping at the islet of Atokos (One House Bay) for a swim.

In Vathi, there are stern or side mooring options on the southern and eastern sides of the harbor, with depths ranging from 2m to over 4m. Anchoring offshore in the bay is also possible, with depths at 10m and good holding potential, however be prepared for strong north-westerly afternoon winds. Other overnight stay options on Ithaca include Kioni , Frikes , or Pera Pigadi .

Day 3: Ithaca to Kefalonia – Agia Efimia (distances and times vary based on route)

Begin your day with a swim at one of the beaches of Gidaki , Filiatro , or Pera Pegadi if you sail southeast of Ithaca. Alternatively, sail to the northern side of the island and cross the Ithaca-Kefalonia strait to stop for a swim at Agios Nikolaos or Afales . According to legend, the Castle of Odysseus was located in Afales, and underwater findings at 15m depth now support this claim.

Be aware of the stronger thermal effect in the strait of Ithaca-Kefalonia, with wind and waves directed from north to south. Beam reach sailing is recommended for a comfortable cruise. Exercise caution near the rocky islet of Daskalio .

Tonight's overnight stay is at the harbor of Agia Efimia in the northern part of Sami Bay . The municipal port offers water and electricity for a fee. Don't miss the opportunity to visit the enchanting Melissani Lake , approximately 5km from your mooring point. If you're up for a hike, consider the 9.5km trail to the world-famous Myrtos beach .

In Agia Efimia, dock in the northern part of the harbor with sea depths over 3m or the eastern part with depths reaching 5m. Alternatively, anchor in the bay with depths at 4m but be cautious of the bathing area at the western part of the bay. Enjoy traditional taverns and cafes just a few meters from your boat.

Day 4: Skala and Agios Nikolaos (25 nautical miles, 5 hours sailing)

Today, sail to Zakynthos , the southernmost destination on your itinerary. This 25nm journey features the most spectacular landscapes and natural treasures of the Ionian Sea, including Shipwreck Bay and the Blue Caves . Along the way, visit Antisamos Beach for extreme water sports and Skala Beach at the southern coast of Kefalonia for unforgettable photo opportunities.

Be prepared for stronger winds in the southernmost part of Kefalonia and exercise caution around the Kakava shallows outside Skala. Maintain an offshore distance of about 2nm from the coast.

The tranquil harbor of Agios Nikolaos offers a pleasant overnight stay, with a mesmerizing natural landscape and modern entertainment options, including traditional taverns and cozy cafes. Before docking, visit the famous Blue Caves , just 1.5 nautical miles from the harbor, and plan for a morning visit to the Shipwreck as it's nearby.

Approach Agios Nikolaos harbor either from the northern or southern side of the rocky islet of Agios Nikolaos. Avoid the south side for anchorage as it serves fishing boats and ferries. Berth on the western side, where depths are about 2m. Ensure your anchor has enough span to secure your berth during strong ripples caused by the ferry's arrival.

Day 5: Zakynthos to Kefalonia - Poros (23 nautical miles, 4-5 hours sailing)

Start your day with a morning swim at the famous Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach , one of the most iconic beaches in the Ionian Sea. Visit early, as local daily cruises can become crowded after 10 am. Be prepared for the usual early afternoon swell, even without wind. The sea depth in the area is sufficient for safe navigation and anchorage in the middle of the bay .

Tonight's destination is Kefalonia , where you have various options in the eastern part of the island. A suggested stop is the port of Poros , located 23 nm from Shipwreck beach. Near the port, below the town's square, you'll find an organized sandy beach , traditional taverns, and bars for your entertainment.

When approaching Poros , watch out for wind spirals (gusts) from the north. Avoid berthing at the large dock, as it serves daily ferries connecting Kefalonia with Zakynthos and Kyllini. Instead, dock in the south-southwest side of the harbor, where depths are over 2m and the anchor grips well on the sandy seabed.

Day 6: Kefalonia to Lefkas - Sivota (25 nautical miles, 5 hours sailing)

Begin your return journey from Poros to Fiskardo , crossing the Ithaca-Kefalonia strait in the opposite direction (south to north). Morning hours offer the best weather conditions for sailing. Discover hidden gems for a morning swim along the way, and if you haven't already, visit Fiskardo for lunch. You can moor in Fiskardo harbor on the south and west sides, with depths over 2.5m and 3m, respectively. If all berths are occupied, stern to the rocks on the north side, where the depth is over 3m.

Sivota , a picturesque seaside village on the southern coast of Lefkas is an ideal destination for your last night. Each tavern in Sivota provides its own floating pier for free docking, water, and electricity. According to Dörpfeld's theory, Odysseus landed in Sivota on his way back to Ithaca. Mooring in Sivota requires a safe spot at one of the floating piers owned by local taverns, with assistance generously offered by the locals upon arrival. Alternatively, you can anchor in the middle of the bay where the seabed is over 4m deep.

Day 7: Back to Lefkas Marina

The last sailing day includes several popular and famous swimming spots on the western side of Lefkas island. Vassiliki Beach , in the southwestern part of the island, is known to be one of the best in the world for windsurfing. As you head further north, enjoy the waters at Porto Katsiki , Egremni , Megali Petra , and Agios Nikitas beaches, all top tourist destinations worldwide.

As you approach the town of Lefkas from the north side, you'll need to cross the floating bridge of the island. Be cautious and mindful of several important points during this process. First, ensure a safe passage outside Ammoglossa, where the size of the sandbar varies each year due to sand deposition. A green light indicates the entry point here. The floating bridge opens every hour , with priority given to incoming boats. There's a dock for side mooring while you wait for the bridge to open.

After crossing the canal, stay close to the starboard side between the green and red lights. First, on your right, you'll see the port and the town of Lefkas. Following that, Lefkas Marina appears at the end of the harbor and you have returned back to base .

Sailing Holidays in Lefkas

Lefkada, or Lefkas (in Greek: Λευκάδα), is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea, on the west coast of Greece, which connects with the mainland by a long causeway and floating bridge. The city of Lefkada, is situated in the northern part of the island, approximately 20 minutes, by automobile, away from Aktion National Airport. The Prefecture of Lefkada comprises Lefkada island, plus, the smaller nearby islands of Meganisi, Kalamos, Kastos, Madouri and Skorpios are of unparalleled beauty. It is the smallest prefecture of Greece in both land area and population (2001 census).

We suggest multiple alternatives regarding sailing around Lefkas island, and our yachts are definitely the best ones to “sail you around”, and guarantee unforgettable summer sailing holidays.

Lefkas (Italian: Santa Maura) is a hilly island marked by karstic action, lying off the Playia Peninsula in Acarnania, from which it is separated by a shallow lagoon varying in width between 600 m and 5 km. It is now linked with the mainland either by a causeway or a ferry. Most of the island is occupied by a range of hills, rising to a height of 1158 m in Mount Stavrotas, and running south-west to end at Cape Doukato. It was from this Leucadian Rock of gleaming white limestone, that Sappho was supposed to have thrown herself for love of the handsome Phaon. Lefkas never had any permanent natural connection with the mainland. The shingle spit at the northern tip was pierced in ancient times by the Corinthians to provide a channel for shipping, much like the spit to the south of Lefkas town, which came into being in the Middle Ages, as a result of the establishment of salt-pans. (Find Lefkas in Google Maps here )

Off the south-east coast of Lefkas, you will find the beautiful unspoilt island of Meganisi, with sandy beaches and famous sea-caves. It is ideal for yacht charters with family or friends, either bareboat or skippered. Westward to Lefkas, there are tiny islands like Skorpios and Madouri, and on the east side the well-equipped marinas of Vasiliki and Nydri provide safe anchorage protected from the occasional strong westerlies.

The must-see ports and anchorages include: Palairos, Mytika, Kastos, Port Leone, Episkopi, Papanikolis Cave, Vathi, Spartakhori, Menidion (Ambracian Gulf), Sivota, Vasiliki and Rouda Bay.

History of Lefkas

The earliest evidence of human settlement on the island dates back to the Neolithic period. In the 7th century BC, the town of Lefkas was founded by settlers from Corinth, who closed off the south end of the lagoon, opposite the St George Fort, by a 600 m long mole, remains of which are still visible under water (the sunken breakwater). They also cut a channel through the spit of shingle at the north end of the lagoon, opposite the Santa Maura Fort.

In the Middle Ages the island belonged to the barons of Kefallinia and Zakynthos. In 1479 it was taken by the Turks – the only Ionian Island to fall into their hands – but was recovered for the Venetians by Morosini in 1684.

As a result of the vicissitudes of its history and a series of earthquakes (the most recent in 1953) Lefkas has preserved very few old buildings.

Ports and Local Amenities in Lefkada

Preveza, Nidri and Lefkas port are the most important bases for bareboat yacht charters in the southern Ionian, as is Corfu and Gouvia in the north Ionian. The Lefkas canal enables sailors to sail, or moor, near the coastline of the east side of the island, which has 90% of the good anchorages.

If you are sailing from the north, the entrance can be found by locating the Santa Maura Fort. If you are looking south-west, you find the Santa Maura Fort and the north entrance to the canal, and in the distance, Lefkas town. The canal proper (dotted lines) starts after Lefkas Town and is marked by red and green poles, and by red and green buoys when the canal turns south. The ancient submerged breakwater is located opposite to St. George’ s Fort.

The entrance to Sivota Bay is sometimes a bit tricky. Once in, you can only anchor at the east side just around the cape, and only if you proceed through the dogleg, you can anchor anywhere in 3-8 m.There are also quays on the south and west sides of the bay where you can find tavernas and other local amenities.

The port of Vassiliki is located in the south-east of Lefkas, deep in the large bay of Vassiliki . The west side of this bay, close to the village of Pondi, comprises a nice anchorage (anchor in 4-8 m). The actual port is located in the east side of the bay and is very shallow. You will just have to stay close to the breakwater. Natural springs which run through a washing house at the south of Vassiliki, surely favour this part of the island.

The town of Spartakhori on the island of Meganisi, can easily be seen from the north and west. Once you are in the bay, the small harbour will be right in front of you. It represents a good shelter, though you will have to anchor in considerable depths (15-25 m). With northeast winds blowing at night, the anchorage near the tavernas is the best location in the bay. The village of Spartakhori is as enchanting, as enjoyable is the beautiful winding road leading there, and is also definitely worth the climb.

Nidri village, however, is more boisterous, just like the fair but crowded inlet across. Apart from July and August this inlet is a must-anchor, and you can use the sunken coaster there to tie an extra line. Even though the Nidri quay provides water, fuel, and any other supplies you may need, it places you in the middle of yacht charter bases, tripper boats, ferries etc.

The landlocked Vlikho Bay provides a good all-round shelter to anchor in a muddy bottom of just 8-2 meters. However, anchoring off the quay of the quiet Vlikho village can be uncomfortable in stronger daytime winds.

In Lefkas Town the houses have a rather unusual structure, however they are designed carefully in order to withstand earthquakes. Go stern-to or bows-to the town quay on the northe-west or south side, the muddy bottom is generally good holding.

On Modra Island, there is the villa of the family of Aristotelis Valaoritis (1824-79), greece’s national poet, a sight worth visiting, since you can also anchor in front of the baroque building.

The Skorpios Island is also private (owned by the Onassis family), but as long you don’t cross the high water mark you can anchor on both sides of the small sandy isthmus south of the island.

  • Luxury Riverboats Are Giving Superyacht Charters a Run for Your Money

Once the ugly-duckling cousin to oceangoing superyachts, many riverboats now offer similar levels of luxury, comfort, and service. They can also access historic cities or remote deltas where no superyacht can venture.

Riverboats become the next superyachts.

With the rise of expedition yachting in remote destinations such as Antarctica , Greenland, and Indonesia’s Raja Ampat, there’s a general belief that all corners of the globe are now accessible by private yacht charter.

Budapest on the Danube River.

“River cruising is the beneficiary of a larger travel trend in which luxury travelers are looking to do nothing,” Daniel Levine, director of New York consultancy Avant-Guide Institute , tells Robb Report . “By that, I mean they can visit multiple ports and soak up plenty of culture and history, all without changing hotels.”

This new fleet of river cruisers can access inland cities and remote stretches of countryside that are inaccessible to large oceangoing vessels. Plus, Levine says, there’s an added advantage to river travel: no seasickness.

One leader of the new set of purpose-built riverboats is Aqua Expeditions , the luxury river cruise operator whose first vessel, Aria Amazon , set sail on the Peruvian Amazon in 2011. Over a decade later, the fleet has grown to three river ships, none with more than 20 suites, cruising both the Amazon and the Mekong River in Vietnam and Cambodia, along with two oceangoing yachts in the Galapagos and Eastern Indonesia.

Aria Amazon on the Peruvian Amazon.

“On my river ships, 30 percent of departures are now private buyouts, similar to traditional charters,” says founder Francesco Galli Zugaro. These clients, mainly multigenerational family groups or large gatherings of friends, are people who tend to vacation on yachts rather than the typical cruise ship crowd. Most of them have come to the riverboats, says Galli Zugaro, after chartering one of Aqua Expeditions’ two yachts.

On board the Aria Amazon.

The desire for off-the-beaten-track travel is fueling this new interest in riverboat charters, says Frédéric Crétin, a Monaco-based charter broker at superyacht brokerage Camper & Nicholsons . “We’ve had a surge in enquiries for the Peruvian Amazon, especially with Americans since it’s not too far from home,” says Crétin, who manages whole-boat bookings for the Aqua Expeditions fleet.

Heritage Line operates five traditionally styled ships along the upper and lower Mekong River and in Vietnam’s Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay. “Our vessels, particularly our small-ship sailing charters on Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay, have seen an increase in private stays,” says CEO John Tue Nguyen. “We now average 12 to 15 charters annually, including families, multi-generational bookings and VIP travelers.”

Side canoe trip in Laos.

In Egypt, a gap in the market to showcase the country’s temples in a private, exclusive way, was behind the launch of the Nile River’s first luxury charter yacht in 2022, Berge . “Our clients are mostly royal families, politicians, celebrities, and athletes,” says Armen Kazazian of Kazazian Cruises , the yacht’s owner. “They don’t want to share the Egypt experience with hundreds of other people.”

The 180-foot, nine-cabin vessel has recently been joined by a sistership, the 196-foot, nine-cabin Arax . True to superyacht protocol, charters are secured with an official MYBA The Worldwide Yachting Association contract, and in the lead-up to the charter, a preference form is sent out to gather information on dietary preferences and daily routines to ensure everything is ready for your arrival.

Luxor by boat.

The differences also include having no water toys as one would on a conventional yacht charter. “But we overcome that with the destination and experiences, such as candlelit dinners on private islands,” says Kazazian. Maybe. But being restricted to a single route on a river is also fundamentally different than port-hopping along the Med or Caribbean.

443-foot Transcend Riverboat

Inland cruising has multiple benefits, insists Matthew Shollar of Transcend Cruises , Europe’s first charter-only, river-cruise company. “You’re not just in coastal locations and you can take your whole group off the boat to a spa, or go biking, or shopping,” Shollar says. “And a riverboat always docks close to your destination.”

In September 2025, the company’s first ship, the 443-foot Transcend , will launch, with a second identical vessel following in early 2026. Penned by Tillberg Design of Sweden, both are built to European riverboat specs but draw inspiration from superyachts for style and amenities, including a 2,600-square-foot indoor/outdoor fitness area that includes a gym, spa, and guest wellness facility.

Ascend Cruises Meeting Room

“The single most expensive piece of equipment on board is a hot tip from superyachts, a 144-inch C Seed unfolding television,” continues Shollar. “It’s a worthwhile investment for guests to enjoy everything from silent discos to movie nights on the sun deck.”

Belmond’s Coquelicot river boat.

The company soft-launched Transcend Advance this summer to better examine the private market’s potential. It took over a five-star vessel from Riverside Luxury Cruises. One client, celebrating his 60th birthday party, had never considered a riverboat charter, but was lured by being able to host many more guests. “We designed a six-day itinerary that was flexible and unique,” says Kimberly Daley, Transcend’s chief revenue officer. “It enabled him and his friends to see chartering in a whole new way.”

Transcend will sail “the highest-demand European waterways,” including the Rhine, Danube, and Moselle, offering waterside access to historic cities like Trier, Budapest, and Belgrade.

River Barge Kir Royale in France's Champagne region.

But a second collection of smaller luxury barges is carrying charter to canals and smaller waterways. Both Belmond’s 128-foot Coquelicot and European Waterways’ Kir Royale launched in France’s Champagne region this year, with a max capacity of six and eight guests, respectively, and the possibility of whole-boat bookings. This combination of space, intimacy, pastoral views and access to exceptional vineyards can’t be replicated on oceangoing yachts.

While luxury riverboats are still a small niche compared to the larger world of superyacht charters, they offer another kind of cruising experience, one that combines slow-moving water with a relaxed lifestyle in some of the most scenic destinations on the planet.

Top Sights in Salekhard (with interactive map)

Salekhard City by night from above

You’re visiting the Russian Arctic and now you’re in Salekhard, wondering what there is to do here. We’ve put together a list of the top sights in Salekhard to help you out! A lot of people think the city is just a jumping-off point for the many outdoor activities in the area, and that there’s nothing much to see or do here. Nothing could be further from the truth.

In 1595, a small fortress was built here, and the village that grew up around it was called Obdorsk. In 1933, the town was renamed Salekhard, which is taken from the Nenets word ‘salja’harad’ meaning ‘house on the peninsula’. The city is now the capital of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Region so all visitors to the area go through it at least once.

Salekhard is a remote place, even by Russian standards, and was very difficult to access for a long time. As a result, the city also has a dark side to its history. In Tsarist times it was used as a place of exile, and in the Soviet era, it was surrounded by many gulags . The city’s history and location as one of the only cities in the world crossing the Arctic Circle mean it’s a pretty cool place to explore.

As you walk around the city, keep your eyes open for some interesting local artwork – there are lots of cool murals and statues hidden away. Read on to see our pick of the top sights in Salekhard, complete with interactive map.

Top Sights in Salekhard You Shouldn’t Miss

Shemanovsky regional museum.

This is the main regional museum for the whole of the Yamal Peninsula. If you’re keen to learn more about the local indigenous Nenets people and natural history of the area then this is the place to go. There’s also an interesting look at the town’s history as part of the Gulag Archipelago.

The museum was actually founded way back in 1906 by a senior priest of the town’s Orthodox mission. It was originally a library of information about the Nenets people. These days, there are almost 150,000 exhibits.

The most famous display in the museum is Lubya, the baby mammoth. Lubya is a perfectly preserved baby mammoth mummy who was found by a local Nenets man in 2007. She’s been the subject of her own National Geographic article and even a movie !

The museum is a great place to start to learn more about the interesting history of the Yamal region.

Note : an English pamphlet is available, and some signage is also in English, but be aware that much of the museum is in Russian only.

Torch Bridge

The bridge was built in 2004 to connect the city centre and the airport. It has actually become one of the most famous sights in Salekhard thanks to its architecture. The design features a single tower with a golden lattice structure, where the bridge gets its torch name from.

You can get a nice view of the city from the bridge itself. If you want the full Salekhard panorama then head up to the restaurant at the top of the tower!

This is the original site of the Obdorskaya Fortress, which was the birthplace of modern Salekhard. Initially constructed as a prison by the Cossacks in 1595, it was converted to a fortress in 1635. In 1807 the original wooden structures here were pulled down as they were deemed to be unsafe.

Although it’s only a few years old, the reconstruction of the original wooden fortress does make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. If you’re lucky enough to get it to yourself on a quiet winter morning, you can imagine how isolated those original settlers were.

The walled area contains a beautiful watchtower and also the Church of Basil the Great, which holds services on Sundays. You can’t enter the other buildings, but it’s a lovely place to get an idea of the original architecture of the area.

Address : 1 Respubliki St.

Church of Peter and Paul

The church is the only preserved 19th-century religious building in the entire area. It was built between 1890 and 1894, and presented some pretty unique challenges to the builders. Since it stands on permafrost, the construction required special engineering considerations – it couldn’t be built on traditional piles and it had to be +16℃ inside.

Legend has it that 7 Russian architects attempted to build the church for 15 years before declaring it impossible! Finally, the structure was completed under the supervision of a German architect, Gottlieb Zinke.

The grounds are lovely, and the church looks particularly beautiful under sparkling blue winter skies. In the postwar period, the building had all sorts of uses. It was a vegetable store, a warehouse and even a sports school. Eventually, in 1991, it was re-consecrated and returned to its original function as a church.

66th Parallel Monument

Did you know that Salekhard is one of the only cities in the world that lies on both sides of the Arctic Circle? You’ll pass this monument as you travel from the airport to the city, and it represents the exact line of passage of the Arctic Circle. It’s a fun place to go and have your photo taken with one foot in the north and one in the south!

Interestingly, the monument was initially installed in 1980 but turned out to be in the wrong place. It was dismantled and moved in 2003 once employees of the Geological Department of Salekhard had determined the correct site for it.

You’ll probably want to go here during the day for the best photos, but it’s also a great place to visit at night due to the beautiful way that it’s lit up.

Address : Brodneva St. Hwy Airport

Memorial of the 501st Gulag Site

This is one of the more sober reminders of the history of this part of Russia. This steam engine mounted on a plinth, just north of the 66th parallel is actually a gulag memorial. Construction on Stalin’s Trans-Polar Mainline started here following the end of World War II. The labour force was made up of prisoners convicted of “political” offences. Many of them lost their lives in this hostile place.

Following Stalin’s death, the project was abandoned, and the tracks left to sink below the permafrost of the arctic tundra. This railway to nowhere subsequently became known as the Dead Road.

The plaque here is inscribed with the words “…the iron road to the very end of the earth was mercilessly laid by the fate of the people […] Deeds and destinies are not forgotten…” It’s a must-visit for anyone interested in the history of Russia, and always provokes intense emotions .

This sculpture is dedicated to the mammoths that once freely roamed this region. Their bones and tusks can be found all over Yamal. Although the mammoths are long gone, you might meet one of the local arctic foxes while you’re here. The views across the river are stunning from this spot too.

You’ll need to have transportation to get here, but it’s a quick 15-minute taxi ride from the city centre. You’ll come away with photos that are sure to provide a talking point when you get home! If you’re here over the Christmas period, then you may even be lucky enough to see the mammoth dressed up as Santa Claus.

Address : Salekhard-Labytnangi-Kharp highway, near the river and ferry terminal

Victory Park

This is definitely one place in Salekhard that you shouldn’t miss. Victory Park is dedicated to the victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War. An eternal flame burns continuously in the centrepiece Pantheon. It’s a symbol of eternal life, commemorating the courage of those who fought and lost their lives.

The park itself contains a small chapel, battle awards and several interesting sculptures. There’s also an alley of names of all the Yamal residents who participated in the Great Patriotic War. You’ll also find displays of military equipment on both sides of the park. This is a beautifully meditative place to visit whilst you’re in the city. It’s also a favourite spot for residents to hang out in good weather.

Address : Youth Avenue, behind the government building of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous district

Open Air Park of Aviation Technology

This unique park running along the road to the airport displays various types of aviation equipment. All the aircraft here played a significant role in helping to develop Northern Siberia.

In the past, Salekhard airport was only able to accept large planes in the winter. Since the runaway was unpaved, this was when it got smoothed over with frost. During the summer a large hydroport was used to connect the city with settlements all over the region.

Unfortunately, there is nothing here in the way of signage, but it’s an unusual sight when you enter or leave the city to catch your flight.

The City Manor Complex

The estate of the Terentyev merchant family was built in 1898. It’s located in the historical part of Salekhard, along with the Obdorsky fortress. This manor is one of the rare surviving examples of wooden architecture in the far North of Russia.

The arrangement of the buildings is representative of a typical manor house in Russia from the late 19th-century. There are a residence, barn and gate. Inside you’ll find furnishings and exhibits from the original era of the buildings. It’s something rather interesting in a city that otherwise feels rather modern.

When to Visit Salekhard

The timing of your visit will depend on what you want to see and do whilst you’re here in Yamal. Since it’s so far north, Salekhard has a subarctic climate, with short, mild summers and long cold winters.

Spring in Salekhard – March to May

The weather starts to warm up at this time of year. It’s one of the more popular times to visit as the days also begin getting longer. If you visit at this time, you’ll also get to experience one of the most interesting events of the year – the Reindeer Herders Festival. Usually held in Salkehard on the last Saturday in March, the event draws people from all over the region.

The nomadic Nenets reindeer herders arrive from across the Yamal peninsula to come together and celebrate. You’ll see sledge races, axe throwing, reindeer wrangling and a host of other activities unique to this fascinating culture.

Another big draw for this time of year is the summer Nenets reindeer migration. Tens of thousands of reindeer are herded north to their summer pastures. It’s a sight that even seasoned photographers and travellers describe as spectacular.

Summer in Salekhard – June to September

Although short, summer in this part of the Russian Arctic is magical. You may have heard of the white nights which happen around the June summer solstice. You’ll see incredibly beautiful colours as the sun just touches the horizon without truly setting. It’s a wonderful time for outdoor activities in the region, with hiking, rafting and fishing getting into full swing.

Photographers will love the light on the vast, sweeping landscapes and exploring all that nature here has to offer. There are incredible glaciers and waterfalls that can only be accessed at this time of the year. You’ll also be able to taste locally grown berries and mushrooms. If you’re feeling adventurous you can even try gathering them yourself!

Autumn in Salkehard – September to October

Although short, autumn here is truly picturesque as the foliage begins to turn, revealing shades of gold and amber. It also marks the start of the winter migration season for the Nenets. Since it’s slightly warmer than spring, is a very different experience as the reindeer graze on greener pastures.

Later in the season, you’ll experience the rolling fog across the River Ob and surrounding tributaries. It creates a truly atmospheric and mystical environment.

Winter in Salekhard – November to March

Winter here is cold and dark, but it provides unparalleled opportunities to see the beauty of the Northern Lights. There’s nothing quite like their dance across the night sky. At the time of the new moon in February, you can sometimes see them for 2 weeks straight!

In the winter you’ll need to wrap up, but there are loads of activities to keep you warm. You can ski, snowboarding and try snowmobile racing to name just a few. This is also the time when the city looks at its most magical, covered in a blanket of purest white.

Oxota Restaurant

As you might expect for a restaurant named after hunters, this is not a spot for the vegetarians! Specialising in locally sourced products, there is an emphasis on the wild game of the region. You should also know that multiple trophies in the form of stuffed animals line the walls. This is one of the more upmarket restaurants in Salekhard.

Address: 11 Lenin St

The main draw of this restaurant is its unique location at the top of the Torch bridge. There are great views of the city and the river from here. It really does make for a one of a kind dining experience!

Yamal Travel Guide - the Land of Nomadic Nenets

Home / Russia Travel Experiences / Yamal Travel Guide – the Land of Nomadic Nenets

As the world gets smaller, there’s a desire to go further – and there are just a few places as enchantingly far away as Yamal. One of the last refuges of Russia’s nomadic reindeer herders, it is so far north that most of it is located beyond the Arctic Circle.

‘Yamal’ means ‘edge of the world’ in the language of the indigenous Nenets people. Here, the Nenets carve out a unique way of life, seemingly at the limits of human tolerance.

Table of Contents

Why visit Yamal

The nenets – the world’s last nomadic reindeer herders.

Centuries ago, hundreds of nomadic tribes roamed vast areas of the planet, but today, nomadic culture is rapidly dying out. Because the local nomads – Nenets (also known as Samoyed) have remained isolated from the modern world in one of the most inhospitable environments on earth, they remain among the last ethnic groups to still practice a completely nomadic way of life.

Yamal Nenets reindeer migration Siberia,Yamal Peninsula travel guide

With a population of over 41,000, the Nenets are one of the largest indigenous groups in Northern Siberia, with the majority living in Yamal. For most of their existence, all the Nenets practiced a nomadic way of life. By herding reindeer and migrating twice a year to warmer pastures within their territory, the Nenets adapted to survive the harsh conditions and freezing temperatures above the Arctic Circle. The reindeer-herding Nenets are famed for having the longest migration routes on earth, relying entirely on wooden sledges for transport over the heavy snow and frozen rivers of the Arctic.

Nenets religion and beliefs

The traditional religious conceptions and customs of the Nenets fall within the general definition of Siberian shamanism. The shamans, of whom there were several categories, were the principal mediators between humans and spirits. The latter used to be represented by anthropomorphic wooden idols, of which great numbers were assembled in the sacred places of the Nenets.

As the Russians moved into Siberia and other remote parts of Russia, indigenous people were forced off their land and they began encroaching on Nenet land. During the 1930s, Nenet spiritual leaders and shamans were exiled. After the Russian Revolution, the Nenets culture suffered due to the Soviet collectivization policy. The government of the Soviet Union tried to force the nomadic Samoyeds to settle down permanently. They were forced to settle in villages and their children were educated in state boarding schools, which resulted in the erosion of their cultural identity. Many, especially in Yamal lost their mother tongue and became assimilated.

Yamal Nenets reindeer migration Siberia,Yamal Peninsula travel guide

During the last few centuries the traditional religious conceptions came to be mixed with elements of Christian origin, and figures from the Orthodox pantheon, notably Nikolai Chudotvorets, or Mikulay in Nenets, were adopted as patrons. Officially, Christianity reached only the western Tundra Nenets, whereas some of the eastern groups preserved shamanism until the Stalin period. Today the shamanist worldview seems to have largely vanished in favor of the official materialistic ideology.

The Nenets are reluctant to talk to outsiders about their spiritual beliefs. They are not afraid of mixing with the modern world. They use radios, TVs, and reject what they don’t feel the need. Nenet children are still required to attend Russian-language schools.

Nenets culture

For the Nenets, the reindeer, one of the few animal species with the ability to survive the sometimes brutal, blizzard-blown conditions of far northern Siberia, is everything. Reindeers are used for transport, clothing, building, milk, meat, blood and fat. As one of the few food sources available, the Nenets rely on reindeer meat for subsistence throughout the year. Freshly butchered deer are usually eaten raw, and the Nenets are also partial to drinking the blood – although for guests, partaking in this practice is optional!

The Nenets wear clothing made of reindeer fur, sewn together using reindeer sinew, and live in conical tents made of reindeer bone and hides, known as chums .

Yamal Nenets reindeer migration Siberia,Yamal Peninsula travel guide

The Nenets diet contains mainly of bread and reindeer meat. When freshly slaughtered, reindeer are typically served raw and still warm (including the fresh blood, a nutritious drink). Otherwise, the meat is frozen for year-round safekeeping. The Nenets supplement their diet with other protein sources when available such as white salmon and other fish. During summer months, they also gather cranberries or other forest fruit for making tea.

While the Nenets struggle to keep their culture alive against the mounting pressure of climate change and industrialisation, outside interest in culturally respectful, eco-tourism provides a glimmer of hope that the last of the world’s nomadic reindeer herders can hold on to their traditional way of life into the next few generations.

“These are indeed people who live in a totally different dimension.” – Russian archeologist Andrei Golovnev told National Geographic. “They do not want to be the same as everyone else. They just want to be who they are.

Homestay with Nenets

There’s really only one reason foreign tourists brave the lengthy travel times and intimidating climactic conditions that await them in Yamal: they have come to observe and participate in a way of life that has, against the odds, remained relatively unchanged for around 2,000 years.

Yamal Nenets reindeer migration Siberia

With no hotels, no stores, no modern communication and very few places to find shelter from the elements, the only way to visit Yamal’s Arctic region and Polar Ural Mountains is to stay with the Nenets in their nomad camps. The whole idea behind a homestay with the Nenets is to immerse yourself in their daily lives, culture and customs. Generally, you’ll be sharing a chum with a host family, giving you the chance to bond with your hosts and enjoy more opportunities to exchange experiences and ideas. During your stay, the locals will go about their daily lives, but will invite visitors to watch or lend a helping hand, as long as you’re physically able and comfortable with the task at hand. Who knows, you might find you have a special talent for lassoing reindeer, chum building or sledge assembly!

catamaran cruises lefkas

You’ll also have the chance to involve yourself in the preparations for making new campsites, sledding into the forest to cut trees for firewood, collecting ice or snow for water, sewing fur clothing and other activities essential for survival, relaxation and social bonding within the community. While the Nenets are extremely hard workers, many are often eager to socialise with their temporary guests, and it’s common for Nenets to sit together and converse around the open fire after dinner.

Experience the reindeer migration with the Nenets

The few visitors who do make it to the isolated Yamal, generally come to experience and participate in the Nenets annual reindeer migration events . The migration to and from Yamal’s summer pastures is carried out each year by the indigenous Nenets, traveling across ancient migration routes in the tundra as they have for thousands of years.

Yamal Nenets reindeer migration Siberia

Accompanied by herds up to 10,000 strong, twice a year, the Nenets complete the world’s longest nomadic migration. Before winter temperatures in the Yamal Peninsula can plummet to an unfathomable -50°C, the Nenets must move their reindeer further south to the moss on lichen pastures in the southern taiga.

Yamal Nenets reindeer migration Siberia

Every Spring, the Nenets then shift their enormous herds north to summer grazing grounds in the Arctic Circle. This massive journey (which even seasoned travel photographers and adventure travellers often describe as one of the most spectacular experiences of their lives), usually starts in mid-March through to mid-April. During this period, temperatures are still freezing, as part of the journey for some groups of Nenets involves crossing a wide expanse of the frozen Ob River, or moving to the Polar Mural Mountains.

The Spring reindeer migration sees thousands of reindeer and their herders travelling anywhere between 250km to 1,000km along the Yamal Peninsula to the Kara Sea, covering around 25km per day.

The Autumn migration starts near the end of September and runs through to mid-October. During this time, it’s possible to see vivid patches of greenery and wildflowers as the seasons change – these months are slightly warmer than the Spring migration. Depending on the weather, the nomad camps can be shifted almost every day, or a couple of days per week. In favourable conditions, the Nenets may spend several days or weeks in one place, repairing sledges and chum coverings before moving on.

Migration involves the chums being taken down and packed on to hand-made, wooden, reindeer-drawn sledges, along with all their possessions. The reindeer herd are then collected and harnessed to the sledges. The entire camp is then transferred by sledge, moving anywhere between 3 to 60km to a new spot for re-establishing the chums. A single move can take between 12 and 24 hours.

Yamal Nenets reindeer migration Siberia

If you join a migration tour , keep in mind that during the migration, you’ll be outside the entire time, with no protection from the elements other than your clothing.

Joining a reindeer migration is about as far from a mainstream holiday as you can get, but for inquisitive, intrepid and physically fit adventure travellers, the chance to experience the nomadic lives of the Siberian people is an unforgettable, once in a lifetime event.

See below some common Reindeer migration routes:

Nenets migration routes map

The Reindeer Herders Festival

If you don’t wish to join the Nenets on their annual migration trips, we’d have to say the best time of the year to visit Yamal is during the end of March through to early April. This is the time when the nomadic Nenets from across the Yamal Peninsula travel in their family groups to celebrate the one-day Reindeer Herder’s Festival. Held annually in different cities and villages of Yamal, the festival usually takes place on the last Saturday of March (in Salekhard) and the 1 st Saturday of April (in Aksarka village).

For the Nenets people, a festival day is a major event. Herders from all over the tundra bring their families to town to sell their crafts and other wares, meet with friends and compete in rough-and-tumble contents of physical skill. Events held on the day include reindeer wrangling, sledge races, axe throwing and tug-of-war. Wandering the festival grounds, you’ll be able to pop inside the specially erected chums and taste unique Arctic delicacies such as stroganina (cloudberry jam). The Nenets women cut striking figures against the pure white snow, dressed in their brightly coloured traditional outfits.

Yamal Nenets reindeer migration Siberia

The Reindeer Herder’s Festival has also become an event in which the Nenets are able to share with the world a fascinating slice of their unique culture. On a Yamal tour during the festival season, you’ll also have the chance to stay with a Nenets family far from the city, giving you an amazing opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the nomadic way of life. With a bit of luck, at this time of year, you might even get to witness the Northern Lights streaking across the pristine polar sky.

An opportunity to experience the Northern Lights in Yamal

With most of Yamal sitting above the Arctic Circle, the region is one of the best destinations in Russia to observe the fantastic spectacle of the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights.

Yamal Nenets reindeer migration Siberia

The Aurora Borealis is usually observed during winter, most commonly between September and May, and best of all in January and February. The prime season for catching this spectacular celestial light show is the New Moon in February, when the Aurora is commonly sighted for around two weeks straight.

February, deep winter in Yamal, is one of the few months the Nenets don’t migrate. On the other hand, it can be a great time to experience a more relaxed homestay with the Nenets, as long as you can withstand the extreme cold!

When to visit Yamal

So basically, the best time to visit Yamal is spring, starting from the end of March till May. During this time, while you still see the Russian Arctic in her winter beauty and the Nenets will be wearing their traditional winter clothes, the weather is not that cold and the daylight is much longer than in winter. Also, the Reindeer Herders Festival takes place at the end of March and the migration starts in mid-April.

With almost the entirety of its territory above the Arctic Circle, Yamal is completely ice-bound for seven to nine months of the year. In deepest winter, darkness shrouds the peninsula, snow piles up metres high and on the very coldest days see the temperature plummet to below – 50°C. The coldest months are January and February when the average temperature lies between -24°C and -28°C. For much of the short summer season, the sun never dips below the horizon, lighting up the vast tundra and muskeg landscape 24 hours a day. The warmest months of the year are July and August, with average temperatures around 5°C on the Arctic Ocean coast of the Kara Sea, up to 10°C in the Yenisei Gulf.

Getting there and around

Nearly all tour groups and independent travellers begin their journey deeper into the Yamal region from Salekhard, the capital of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Region.

Salekhard is the only city in the world, located directly on the Arctic Circle. As you might imagine, residents aren’t exactly your everyday small townsfolk, and the city comes across as simultaneously tough and quirky. Russian settlers founded the town on the banks of the Ob River in 1595. It became a popular place for exiling dissidents during the Tsarists and Soviet periods. These days, Salekhard is a thriving, surprisingly prosperous town. In fact, it’s one of the most affluent in the entire Arctic region, thanks to the discovery of nearby oil and gas reserves. For visitors, Salekhard is an interesting place to spend a day or so.

Attractions include:

  • Shemanovskiy Yamal-Nenets District Museum and Exhibition Complex. Compact well-organised and surprisingly engaging, this museum focuses on the anthropological and natural history of Yamal and makes a great primer before diving deeper into the Nenets culture. The most interesting exhibits relate to the relatively recent local discovery of woolly mammoth remains. The highlight is “Baby Lyuba” the mummified body of a mammoth calf which is almost completely intact, despite being approximately 42,000 years old.
  • Odorsky Burg (Master’s Town) .A short walk from the city centre is this small historical replica village. The collection of wooden farmhouses and religious buildings represent how the town might have looked after it was settled by the Cossacks in the 16 th century.
  • Polar Circle Monument . Roughly half of Salekhard lies north of the Arctic Circle. A shiny modern monument marks the Polar Circle’s exact latitudinal line. Worth stopping by for a ‘geography selfie’.
  • Mammoth Monument . A large sculpture of a woolly mammoth stands on the shores of the Ob, close to where several mammoth finds have been uncovered. There’s not much else to look at but getting there requires crossing an impressive frozen bridge over the icy Ob River.

By air from Moscow or St Petersburg

By far the easiest way to reach Yamal is by air. Yamal Airlines flies once per day between Moscow, St Petersburg and Salekhard, and the flight time is just under three hours and costs about US $150 one way.

By train from Moscow

If you are planning to arrive to Yamal y train, your final stop will be Labytnangi, which be reached via two to two and a half-day train trip from Moscow. From here, you will need to get to Salekhard by car, over the frozen ice of the Ob River. In the summer, the two towns are connected by a ferry route.

Note that some parts of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Region may require a special Border Zone permit for outsiders to be granted access. Your tour agency will advise you in advance if you need to apply for this permit for your particular trip. If your tour requires this permit, it must be arranged 2 months in advance.

Eating and sleeping in Yamal

Food and accommodation in salekhard.

As the prosperous polar city of Salekhard slowly begins to receive more outside visitors, the options for accommodation in town are slowly on the increase. Don’t come to Salekhard expecting luxury – however, there is a reasonable choice of two and three-star tourist guesthouses and business hotels located in the centre of town. Salekhard has quite a decent selection of restaurants and cafes serving Russian, international and traditional Yamal cuisine. Breakfasts are typically included with your hotel stay, while meals run at approximately 1,300 RUB (US $20) for lunch and about 2,000 RUB (US $30) for dinner.

Beyond Salekhard

Once you move beyond Salekhard, deeper into the tundra and the territory of the nomadic Nenets, you’ll be sleeping in the reindeer camps inside the chums, generally sharing a chum with a host family. The chums are cosily warm even during the harshest winters, heated by an open stove and the heat kept in by a covering of thick reindeer hide.

On some group tours, a private chum for the group may be a possibility for those not wishing to stay with a Nenets family. The Nenets however, are sociable and curious and generally happy to talk to visitors and exchange experiences and ideas after a long day maintaining the camp.

Meals and eating customs in the Nenets camp

Once at camp, visitors usually subsist on the typical nomadic diet, mostly made up of preserved meat, fish, bread, jam, condensed milk, biscuits and tea. Soup, rice, pasta, noodles and other packaged foods are usually also provided or can be purchased beforehand in Salekhard.

While Nenets mostly eat reindeer meat raw, you certainly won’t be expected to do the same. As long as you show respect for their customs, you can choose whether to partake or not. It should be remembered that this is intended to be a culturally immersive experience, with everything that entails.

Tour packages in Yamal Peninsula

Due to the extreme remoteness of the Yamal Peninsula, and the logistical and communication challenges involved in organising a homestay with the Nenets, we strongly advise that visitors travel to Yamal on an organised tour . Your tour organisers will arrange your stay with one of the Nenets groups open to receiving visitors. They should also arm you with all the information you’ll need to prepare for a trip to one of the coldest and least-visited populated regions on the planet.

Yamal Nenets reindeer migration Siberia, Yamal Peninsula travel guide

56 th Parallel offers a number of culturally immersive tours to the Yamal Peninsula during the key periods of the spring and autumn reindeer migrations, and the annual Reindeer Herder’s Festival. We also offer a winter photography tour (outside the migration season) offering a homestay with the Nenets and exceptional conditions for hunting the Northern Lights over the tundra over the star-strewn Arctic winter sky.
