As for most people, owning a boat is to expensive and impracticle. Joining a boat club is an excellent way of having the benefits of boat ownership without the down side. I have used Xclusive before and always found their service amazing. I am pleased to find that everyone involved in the boat club maintains this exceptionally high standard, with friendly and always helpful staff. Hello Amit, can you tell the reader a little about yourself and how you went from Croydon to Dubai?

Born and bred in Croydon, the birth of the first-ever international airport in the United Kingdom, I could hardly have imagined the opportunities that awaited me. Finding an aptitude for success, I chose to remain close by and began my studies at the University of Birmingham. Little did I know that soon enough, I’d embark on a journey of exploration that would take me thousands of miles away from where I started – a trip to Dubai for vacation changed everything.

From a young age, I have had an unwavering eye for business. To this day, I have always been inspired by my parents, who are both self-employed. At 14, when most people didn’t even know what the internet was yet, I ran numerous flourishing businesses. The ambitious nature I developed drove me to make lasting changes to the industry by calling upon technology yet undreamt of by most. My resolve was such that it eventually caught the attention of a large well-known American hosting company that acquired my company outright.

During my stay in Dubai, I set off into the hospitality industry as ambitious as ever. Here, at the age of 22, I jumped head first into hotel development by embracing roles ranging from building and expansion to pre-opening projects.

But given so many future prospects, I also found an opportunity in operations related to yachting services. And later on, focus solely on leisure activities.

What was Dubai’s boat culture like when you arrived here in the mid-2000s?

Back in the 2000s, in the early days of Xclusive Yachts, no one had operated a business like ours before in Dubai. We introduced a never-before-seen activity to the government, and it was a unique challenge to build our own code from scratch since nothing quite like this had been done, and that was the birth of Xclusive Yachts. As we gradually established the business, we mostly offered 3-hour charters on yachts 70 feet and below. Back then, people rarely booked more than a couple of charters each week, but now — wow! — we book three or four per day at around 2000 Dirhams for the same charter length as we used to offer at 20,000 Dirhams. Clearly, things have changed and grown in leaps and bounds!

Was there an existing charter industry?

Not really. There was not much information available on commercial charters that could be found online or in print publications. It seemed to be more of a hidden venture – only those in the know could gain access as word spread amongst close friends and acquaintances. Nothing was official; it was almost as if these excursions were taking place behind a veil of mystery. Nevertheless, despite how little information could be gathered, there were still some intrepid customers who managed to arrange the trips through their contacts.

What made you decide to start Xclusive Yachts?

When I was 21, a golden opportunity presented itself, I was managing a private yacht in Dubai on behalf of some wealthy individuals who lived in London. They rarely used the yacht, and I identified the potential of a commercial opportunity whereby I rented it out here-and-there to people who didn’t own a yacht. The owners were supportive, and I seized the opportunity to work out how to formalise a license and register the company as an official business, launching what would soon become a successful enterprise. It all began with harnessing the potential and having the courage to take risks. It was the start of turning a dream into reality; my own venture in renting and chartering luxury boat trips. With years of dedication and passion, this concept has become my pride and joy.

How did you grow the business?

As the business grew, other companies in Dubai offered similar services, and we realised we needed to diversify beyond buying and renting boats. We also wanted to expand our clientele, and the best way to do that was to get people onto the water. With this in mind, we established a sea school that would not only train people to drive boats but gives them a personal experience with the water.

In Dubai, you need to own a yacht in order to drive it, which can be extremely limiting, and that’s when we established a boat club where you can go on a boat like it’s your own without going through the hassle of owning it.

The great thing is that we are getting people onto the water, making that first connection between them and the sea, and it is that first step that creates future yacht owners. Our sea school has changed lives, creating connections between aspiring boaters and an opportunity of ownership previously unseen by many. A great example of how successful this idea has been is when one of our sea school students contacted me after recently purchasing a 35-metre boat – an amazing accomplishment for somebody who had never stepped foot on a boat before coming through our doors.

How is business today?

Over the years, we have seen the global demand for yachts skyrocket. To meet that demand, we have built an impressive collection featuring boats of all sizes and kinds. We can trace this back to when we purchased our first 70-footer, which served as a springboard for expanding our fleet.

Nowadays, our owned yachts are more diverse than ever and stretch across all sizes, including two large superyachts added in the last couple of years. From recreational boats to fishing boats to sports yachts, we’ve experienced tremendous growth in the volume and diversity of requests by customers all around the globe.

Today we own more than 70 boats. After witnessing such extraordinary expansion within our market, it’s clear that this is just the beginning for us. Our goal is to satisfy our customers’ needs while always striving to remain a leader in this ever-growing market. Our team has proven adept at adapting quickly to the ever-evolving trends of modern yacht culture, ensuring that we stay ahead of the competition.

How’s the sea school going?

We are an RYA sea school in Dubai, and we are proud of the hundreds of students who come to train and learn how to drive boats with us every year. To take the next step in our journey, we opened a boat club for members, below 12 metres. Students could get their powerboat qualifications and then immediately have access to boats on their doorstep.

With a monthly fee, there’s no hassle or high cost of owning a boat, and members can drive as many boats as they want during their membership period. Plus, all boats are kept in pristine working order for each session so that members get maximum enjoyment of their time on the water without worrying about breakdowns and technical issues. Our goal is to enable members to arrive at the boat and find that everything is functioning perfectly so they can maximize their time enjoying the vast waterways Dubai has to offer. So, if you are looking for an effortless sailing experience with hassle-free RYA training, we have them with our sea school and our conveniently located boat club in Dubai.

Can you tell us about your Mediterranean plans?

Our purchase of Behike at the start of 2020, before COVID, marked an exciting new chapter for our business as we embarked on European expansion. We entrusted her management to Camper & Nicholsons and are currently weighing up whether it is more beneficial for us to base her in the Mediterranean or bring her to Dubai.

However, our plans have not stopped there – just last year, we acquired a second stunning similar-sized superyacht in Dubai, Stardom, and with that came the launch of our latest product offering, the Superyacht Experience.

This service offers guests access to a luxurious 43m Tri-deck superyacht, complete with refitted interiors specifically designed for hosting larger groups. Our team is excited about this new direction and what it could mean for our business moving forward.

The fleet: Xclusive has over 70 boats and yachts available, stretching from RIBs, up to the 140ft Stardom.

What can we expect from Xclusive Yachts in 2023?

For 2023, we launched the aforementioned Super Yacht Experience. This service offers an all-inclusive experience of ultimate luxury for just $100 per person that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. Guests will be provided with access to all the features typically found in a superyacht – chefs, bartenders, DJs, water activities, and more – all watched over by 16 dedicated crew members across various nationalities.

This unique experience has quickly become popular among guests and is seen as a ‘must-do’. To accommodate the surging demand, we are looking to purchase additional superyachts between 30 metres to 45 metres in size. Moreover, our sights are set on countries within the GCC region and Europe for potential expansion with one or two boats.

For our Boat Club, starting a Boat Club in Europe for 12-metre boats is an exciting and ambitious goal, but before taking the plunge, we need to weigh out the details. Regulations in Europe may be more stringent than they are in Dubai, so this will have an effect on our business model. However, we are definitely looking into other opportunities outside of Europe: currently, we are focusing our efforts on expanding into other parts of the Middle East, which is already keeping our hands full!

For Tyler, spending time in the wild places brings things into alignment! He grew up in Colorado North of Fort Collins in a family that valued outdoor pursuits of all kinds. He spent countless days fly fishing Laramie Plains lakes, North Park, Yampa River and "The Reef" and "Mile" on The North Platte River in Wyoming. Falls were spent packing into the wilderness areas on horseback chasing elk followed by a Nebraska deer hunt and some years squeezing in a Wyoming deer hunt! Winters were spent skiing the front range and hunting geese out of a buried pit east of Fort Collins. He followed his life partner, Sierra, to Idaho who supported his dream of building a fly shop, and outfitter business. The crossover from riggin' horses to riggin' boats for whitewater and fishing trips was some what seamless. Running boats instead of horse means no more feeding livestock which leads to more time angling and and hiking with guests and friends! I truly look forward to sharing wild places with wonderful people.

Houthi attacks on Red Sea shipping are disrupting global trade and making headlines—but they are not the number one global maritime security threat. According to the US Coast Guard , that distinction belongs to Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated Fishing—a longer-term threat to global food security and international security. An estimated 3.3 billion people—nearly half of the world’s population—rely on fish for 20% of their protein. 93 percent of global fish stocks are exploited, overexploited, or significantly depleted. If this were not bad enough, IUU Fishing is linked to a host of international crimes—and to insidious military aims of the People’s Republic of China. Governments typically address IUU Fishing as an environmental problem—missing the boat. The US and the international community must address the key legal, criminal, social, and geopolitical aspects of the problem.

IUU Fishing is big business—and big trouble. IUU Fishing is linked to transnational criminal organizations, human trafficking, labor violations, human slavery, terrorism, corruption, money laundering, tax evasion, fraud, bribery, and a continuing parade of horribles. These organizations, and the tens of billions of dollars they cost states and legal fishermen every year, threaten economic stability and disrupt law enforcement efforts against transnational crime. At their worst, criminal organizations can undermine legitimate governments and state sovereignty.

The PRC compounds these threats by using IUU Fishing to advance its military and geopolitical strategy. The PRC boasts the world’s largest Distant-Water Fishing Fleet, which overlaps significantly with its maritime militia. The maritime militia is comprised largely of civilian fishing vessels who are on the PRC’s military payroll part-time. Estimates of the size of the militia vary dramatically, from several hundred to 700,000 ships. Militia vessels have military capabilities like intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance functions. All are known to habitually turn off the Automatic Identification Signals required by international law at strategic times.

Maritime militia vessels train with and support the PRC Navy and Coast Guard and have played a prominent role in recent confrontations with the Philippines over the Second Thomas Shoal and Japan over the Senkaku Islands. They are used to enter contested oil and gas fields and harass Vietnam and Malaysia. In 2020, 300 vessels were spotted fishing off the Galapagos islands with their AIS signals off. The PRC uses these vessels occasionally to fish but always to project power, threatening other states’ rights in their Exclusive Economic Zones and undermining international stability. The PRC’s erosion of the distinction between civilian and military vessels also undermines the principles of the law of war.

The PRC has also advanced its IUU Fishing enterprise by buying flags of other countries, a process known as “flagging in.” Each vessel must fly the flag of a state, and that flag state is then responsible for that vessel’s compliance with international law and the standards set by the International Maritime Organization. Buying another state’s flag is often a legal process, usually achieved through foreign business partnerships, such as with the Chinese National Fishing Corporation. Recognizing this, the PRC has made it part of an explicit strategy to quietly permeate other states’ waters—to win without fighting. Recent reporting by the Outlaw Ocean Project found 250 PRC-owned vessels that were flagged to other states; senior foreign officials have suggested others to me directly. These vessels are flagged all over the world, from Argentina to Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Russia, Iran, and elsewhere. At least 50 of these vessels have been involved in transnational crime.

To counter the threat from IUU Fishing and associated activities, states must attack the business model of the transnational criminal organizations and other organizations involved in illegal fishing. The strategic use of law, or “ lawfare ,” will be critical for attacking the root of the problem—on land. IUU Fishing organizations are involved in an array of transnational crimes that can be prosecuted in US courts or the domestic courts of other countries. Attacking the organizations that support and benefit from IUU Fishing is also much cheaper and less dangerous than having the military board and sweep vessels, and then impound them to safeguard evidence for trials. States must also address the food insecurity at the root of IUU Fishing by introducing alternative sources of protein and/or encouraging a shift toward vegetarian diets.

The PRC’s military aims should be addressed via transparency , highlighting the PRC’s malign and illegal efforts and rallying a coalition of support to help other nations to understand and enforce their maritime rights and uphold the rules-based international order. When diplomatic, legal, and law enforcement solutions fail, Involvement by US and partner and ally militaries may be necessary to protect sovereign rights and conserve fishing stocks.

The US must push for stronger enforcement of the UN Convention on Transnational Organized Crime, the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, and more. Members of the public can be trained to know their rights, recognize legal violations, and report them, contributing to a whole-of-society approach to fighting the problem.

IUU Fishing cannot be solved by conservation alone. A holistic look at the problem reveals the necessity of a whole-of-society approach. Without bringing a full array of legal, law enforcement, and societal tools to bear on the problem, a lucrative fishy business is sure to continue. Individuals must work with states to protect both fish and sovereignty.

Australian Border Force respond to reports of illegal foreign fishing vessel in Western Australia's remote north

An illegal foreign fishing vessel in waters off Western Australia's remote northern coast has been spotted. 

It comes just one day after 20 Indonesian fishermen were fined for illegally fishing in the same area.

The Australian Border Force (ABF) is responding to reports of an illegal foreign fishing vessel in waters off Western Australia's remove northern coast.

A local tour operator told the ABC he saw the boat this morning in mangroves, about 370 kilometres north-west of Broome.

It comes just one day after 20 Indonesian fishermen were fined for illegally fishing sea cucumber, shark fin and sea urchin in the same area, earlier this month.

Thirteen others were taken out of Australia's fishing zone, with authorities destroying three foreign fishing boats.

Peter Tucker, who operates Kuri Bay Sport Fishing Tours, alerted the ABF after his colleague spotted what appeared to be another foreign boat during this morning's excursion.

"The tides at the moment are very big up here and so they were deep in the mangroves," he told the ABC.

"Two gentlemen were seen talking and laughing on the deck of the vessel."

Mr Tucker said authorities needed to work more closely with locals and Indigenous rangers to deter further illegal finishing by foreign vessels.

"It looks like it's an ongoing situation — they've been here for last three or four months on mass," he said.

"The Australian authorities need to be much more proactive."

Illegal fishing damaging unique Australian environments

In a statement, the ABF said it was working closely with the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) to detect, intercept and apprehend those conducting illegal fishing in Australia's Exclusive Economic Zone.

"Persistent illegal foreign fishing activity continues to threaten fish stocks and damage some of Australia's most unique and valuable environments, including marine parks such as the Kimberley Marine Park," the statement read.

"We are committed to protecting our vulnerable marine resources and delicate ecosystems through the targeting of irregular foreign fishing in Australian waters."

Mr Tucker led the ABF officials to four foreign fishing vessels in the mangroves of Kuri Bay, about 220km north of Derby earlier this month.

Authorities later confirmed three of the four boats had been destroyed at sea, with 20 of the 33 fishermen taken to the Australian mainland for prosecution.

A haul of 700kg of sea cucumber, 4kg of shark fin, 4kg of sea urchin and 2,450kg of salt was found on the boats.

Punishments described as 'pretty pathetic'

Eleven Indonesian men faced Darwin Local Court on Thursday, with all pleading guilty to using a foreign boat to fish in territorial sea.

One fisher, believed to be a captain, was sentenced to one-month jail, which was suspended for two years.

Mr Tucker described those punishments as "pretty pathetic".

"They're coming onto our sovereign land, and doing what they like, and they're very brazen so it is a concern," he said.

Previous incidents had prompted a national debate over the country's maritime policies, with farmers flagging concerns over the biosecurity threat .

Border protection has become a pressing issue in the Kimberley, with a surge of boat arrivals in recent years.

According to the AFMA, 216 foreign fishing boats had been intercepted between July 1, 2023, and April this year, compared to 125 boats in the 2022-23 financial year.

Meanwhile asylum seeker vessels have arrived at Truscott and Beagle Bay in recent months.
