Welcome to Plymouth Moorings

Your Journey to our moorings starts, at the "Old Ballast Pond" now known as Torpoint Yacht Harbour, where we will ferry you out to your vessel via our courtesy boat.The harbour is situated one mile from Plymouth Sound and the port of Plymouth. Steeped in nautical history and leading to one of the best cruising grounds in the British Isles. From Torpoint Yacht Harbour one can easily cruise south, eighty miles to the popular Channel Islands or travel a little further to the Brittany coast. An easy days sailing to the East are the ports of Brixam, Dartmouth and Salcombe and to the West the ancient towns of Fowey and Falmouth and beyond Falmouth and another day's sail West brings you to the magical Scilly Isles.

Beyond the outer harbour are laid 100 + swinging and trot moorings. Owners using this facility are able to use, FREE OF CHARGE, OUR COURTESY TAXI RIB BOAT TO GO TO AND FROM THEIR BOAT WITHOUT THE NEED FOR A DINGHY, which operates from 1st April to the end of October,  seven days a week, but can also store their dinghies safely at the harbour if they wish. Other facilities included are the same as our marina birth holder's facilities; toilets, showers, car parking, pick up water and 24 hour CCTV security at the harbour, which covers the majority of our moorings

We specialise in the transportation of boats under 3 ton and up to 28 foot, throughout the UK and across Europe. We can offer a fast, efficient, fully legal and economical service.

The recent delivery of a new bespoke triple axle trailer allows us to carry a wide variety of boats types, both motor boats and sailing boats. We also operate a triple axle flat bed trailer which is more suited to some boat shapes and is also used to piggy back your boat on its trailer if the roadworthiness of your trailer is in doubt.

RYA Qualified, with International Certification, Insured and with tachographs fitted. Under new legislation any business delivering your boat must now have a tachograph fitted, even just towing it on your trailer. Anyone offering a delivery service without this will not be insured in the event of a claim, and you also face the risk of having your boat seized at the roadside by VOSA (or the European equivalent) until you can arrange an alternative company to collect.

Emergency Towing

Whether you need emergency "at sea" assistance for mechanical breakdown, fuel delivery, jump start or ungrounding assistance, or if you would like to schedule a tow from your dock to a repair facility, TowBoatUS is available 24/7/365 to members and nonmembers throughout our Cape Cod/Plymouth service area.

Salvage & Refloat

At the dock or in open water, immediate assistance for a vessel taking on water is just a phone call away. Once assistance is on scene, our office staff will help you contact your insurance company, guide you through the salvage process and keep you updated throughout the entire emergency.

Spill Cleanup

We possess the equipment needed to contain spills of fuel and/or oil. Our team consists of environmental cleanup state certified first responders, and our fully equipped response trailer has both hard and soft boom, and absorbent materials available to respond by land or sea to assist in containing a spill and cleaning it up.

TowBoatU.S. Cape Cod/Plymouth can contract with a third party to provide repair services. We'll take care of the logistics and get you cruising again asap. We can also arrange local transportation to transport you to a boat ramp for vessel retrieval, a hotel for overnight accommodations, or other local destinations.

We can provide Load – Transport – Unload services for boats up to 28ft and around 6t on our rigid vehicles.  We are able to lift directly from the water or to launch for you assuming suitable access for the lorry in relation to the water.

Larger boats can be accommodated using our Artic/HIAB with a choice of trailers to suit specific needs.  Our limit in terms of weight is around the 8t mark taking into consideration all the constraining factors around boat lifting.

We supply fully certified lifting equipment incl slings, spreader beams and stands for propping fixed keel boats.

In addition to boats we can move a wide range of marine equipment incl pontoons, gangways, boat moulds, stowage frames etc

The race will see up to 40 boats set off from Plymouth in a 'challenging' one-year solo or double-handed circumnavigation of the planet, via the Antarctic. The race will start and finish in Plymouth, the scene of the conclusion to Francis Chichester’s famous solo round-the-world triumph in 1967.

One reader, M1785 writes: "All these events and things going on in Plymouth, how come the locals and various hotels and shops see none of the money? If it's good for the economy, walk into town same old shops, either dirty and closed or no stock. Also the cruise ships Plymouth keep on about how many rush to get off and visit Plymouth."

Plainolme replies: "Agreed that there doesn't seem to be much maintenance, but I suppose local businesses and their owners that do see benefits to the events may be locals who live here and spend money here, they also employ local people who will see added hours and perhaps bonuses(?) for working these events, or those businesses buy from local suppliers, who employ locals etc etc.

"It's all a bit of a trickle down, but I do admit each level it trickles down it loses a bit of weight... so the lower down you are, the less you see."

Vamboroolsok says: "The other yacht races have brought money into the city so glad to see this one too. Always a good sight on the Sound. Until then let the mood hoovers have their usual negative posts."

Joe123 replies with a question: "If the races have 'brought money into the city' then where has it all been spent?"

Vamboroolsok answers: "What do you mean if? Bars, cafes, restaurants, car parks, and buses benefit, for starters. Then there are the fees council/harbour master charges for mooring in Millbay harbour."

Hijinx adds: "Putting Plymouth on a showcase, then clean the city up because it needs a complete vamp up."

Others were more positive about the event. Vamboroolsok said: "The other yacht races have brought money into the city so glad to see this one too. Always a good sight on the Sound. Until then let the mood hoovers have their usual negative posts."

Another added: "Be great to see some world class boats back in Plymouth once again."

Suspected migrant-smuggling boat lands at famous Laguna Beach locale

Victoria Beach, one of the most famous spots in the city of Laguna Beach, is a magnet for residents, tourists and the occasional local celebrity.

On Monday, though, lifeguards found something they don’t usually see on the sand: an abandoned, broken-down Panga-style vessel stocked with life jackets and fuel cans. Authorities believe the boat was used to smuggle migrants across the border.

The morning shift of lifeguards discovered the boat when they arrived around 6:20 a.m.

“It was a 24-foot single outboard vessel that ran aground and capsized,” said Kai Bond, chief of Laguna Beach Marine Safety.

There was “no sign of anyone associated with the boat,” Bond said. Lifeguards searched the beach and the water and saw “no signs of distress.”

It took officials about six hours to remove the crumbling watercraft from the beach, he said.

Steven Day, a local resident, was among the first to spot the boat in the morning.

The beach has been especially crowded this summer after being “blown up by social media,” he said. The day before the landing, the beach had hosted a volleyball tournament and was swarmed with people.

It was empty when he saw the boat early Monday morning.

By around 6:30 a.m., marine interdiction agents with U.S. Customs and Border Patrol were notified of the abandoned watercraft at the beach, agency spokesperson Gerrelaine Alcordo said in a statement.

The agents found “12 life jackets and 10 fuel cans onboard the vessel,” Alcordo said. No arrests were made.

The vessel was seized for suspected violations of the federal law that prohibits bringing noncitizens into the country outside of designated ports of entry, Alcordo said.

Boat landings by migrant smuggling operations are not uncommon along California’s southern coast, officials said, though Victoria Beach is not a typical arrival spot.

It’s been an eventful summer in Laguna Beach. Increased tourism has brought trash, traffic and frayed tempers to the community; residents say crowds began to overwhelm the city at the beginning of the pandemic and haven’t eased up since.

In a viral TikTok video posted in July, a homeowner yelled at a family at Victoria Beach , telling them that they were on her private property as they tried to enjoy the beach.

“Get f—ing moving,” the woman yelled at the family, which included a child. “Get out of here. Now!”

Seafest 2024 to make waves with Plymouth Sound National Marine Park uplift

This year Seafest is set to expand beyond The Barbican and Waterfront as Plymouth Sound National Marine Park joins forces with Plymouth Waterfront Partnership to offer over 1,000 free activities for festival goers to take part in.

Due to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Youth Investment Fund and Plymouth City Council, Plymouth Sound National Marine Park are able to deliver free taster sessions through its delivery partners, Tinside Lido, Mount Batten Watersports and Activities Centre and Mount Edgcumbe Country Park.

Seafest, which takes place over the weekend of the 14 and 15 September, has something to offer everyone, from free swim sessions at Tinside Lido to standup paddleboard and kayak tasters at Mount Batten. If you prefer to enjoy the water from a distance you can join a free tour of Mount Edgcumbe House or scale the 17 th Century Mount Batten Tower.

To help people hop between each of Seafest’s locations, Plymouth Sound National Marine Park are subsidising the ferry between Mount Batten and The Barbican and onto Royal William Yard and Mount Edgcumbe.

Here’s a glimpse of what’s in store for 2024:

Tinside Lido are offering 600 FREE bookable swimming sessions throughout the weekend (150 will be reserved for walk-in slots). In collaboration with Swim England and the RNLI, 72 FREE Swim Safe sessions will be available for young people aged 7–14 years. There will also be 72 FREE beginner SCUBA and snorkeling sessions available across the weekend.

Over at the Mount Batten Watersports and Activity Centre there will be up to 320 FREE taster sessions up for grabs, choose between standup paddleboard, kayak and sailing - check the website for age restrictions and booking. On Sunday Mount Batten Tower will be open to the public to explore throughout the day.

Mount Edgcumbe are opening the doors to its house on Sunday 15 September to offer 120 FREE tours.

Councilor Sally Haydon, Cabinet Member for Events said, “I am so excited that we can offer lots of free ‘have a go sessions’ across Plymouth Sound National Marine Park as part of our contribution to the Seafest weekend. We want to ensure everyone has the opportunity to experience what the Park has to offer.

“You can book onto free swimming sessions, try snorkeling and paddle sports, we are even subsidising the ferry to ensure transport costs don’t stop people from getting involved. These activities will really add to what Seafest has to offer, but be quick to book as I am sure lots of people will want to take advantage of this great opportunity”.

In addition to the wide variety of free activities on offer there are lots of other opportunities to join in sea-themed celebrations throughout the weekend at each of the locations including, The Barbican, Tinside Lido, West Hoe, Royal William Yard, Mount Batten Peninsula and Mount Edgcumbe.

ID Released For 34-Year-Old From Westbrook Killed In Old Saybrook Boating Accident

The identity has been released of a young man killed in a boating accident in Connecticut as authorities continue their search for two missing people.

The search continues for two missing victims of a boat crash in Old Saybrook.

The incident occurred in Middlesex County in Old Saybrook on Long Island Sound around 9:15 p.m., Monday, Sept. 2.

According to Will Healey, spokesman for the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Police, multiple agencies responded and found a single motorboat floating, half-submerged, near the Harbor One Marina in Old Saybrook.

A total of nine people were on the boat. An adult male was recovered dead, and six people were transported to the hospital, Healey said.

"There was significant damage to the boat, which hit the east-facing jetty at the mouth of the Connecticut River," said Healey. 

The person found dead has been identified as Middlesex County resident Christopher Hallahan, age 34, of Westbrook, Healey said.

The group was returning from a day on Block Island when the crash occurred, DEEP. officials said. 

Officials did not say if the boaters were wearing life vests. 

The search for two missing adult males resumed at 8 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 4.

General says the Marine Corps 'stole' the narco-sub idea from drug runners to move missiles and more

The Marine Corps got its inspiration for a new unmanned, semisubmersible vessel from narco-submarines used to transport drugs, a general said.

The vessel is intended to transport equipment, weapons, and supplies to forward-deployed Marines, helping to make US forces more maneuverable and flexible.

Marine Corps Brig. Gen. Simon Doran said at a DefenseNews conference on Wednesday that the idea for the autonomous, low-profile vessel was effectively stolen from vessels used for smuggling drugs.

"Truth be told, this is just a narco-boat . We stole the idea from friends down south," Doran said.

"And so this is 55-feet long, completely autonomous. It's able to go hundreds or thousands of miles. It's able to carry weapon systems that we have that are new," he said. Doran added that the boats "can carry pretty much anything you want to put in it."

The Marine Corps tested the new vessel at Camp Pendleton in February as part of Project Convergence Capstone 4 , an Army-led joint force exercise on advanced capabilities.

The new vessel can be configured to deliver a variety of supplies and equipment, giving the Marines flexibility in how, when, and where to use it.

Doran said the drone's low-profile design helps keep it out of sight in combat, and because the boat is unmanned, the Marine Corps can keep more of its personnel out of danger.

"If you have that unit located inside a weapons engagement zone, contested logistics and the ability to maneuver in the littorals becomes key," Doran said at the conference. "And for that, what we're looking at is trying to acquire systems that we deem risk-worthy, meaning that we don't necessarily want to just waste them, but we'd rather put something in there that's autonomous, that doesn't have humans on it, that can do some of these higher-risk missions without having personnel put in that riskier situation."

The Pentagon has prioritized the development of unmanned equipment. Last year, the Department of Defense announced the Replicator initiative, a long-term program to field thousands of autonomous systems . Few details about the initiative have been released, but $1 billion has been allocated to the program this fiscal year, indicating it's likely making progress.

The initiative has been driven by the possibility of a future conflict with China, with US defense officials saying unmanned systems would give the nation an asymmetric advantage against China should the two superpowers clash one day.

To that end, the military has looked at unmanned warships , wingmen , and recon assets to boost joint forces in battle.

The Pentagon has also focused on dispersal and maneuverability capabilities to shield forces from a missile strike and electronic-warfare capabilities for battles inside the electromagnetic spectrum.
