The 9th of August is a historic date for the Italian shipbuilding industry, marking 30 years of a record that still stands undefeated, set by the ship Destriero. Since 1992 the “Blue Riband” for the Atlantic crossing has belonged to all those who participated in the design and construction of the ship and the realisation of the challenge.

Destriero: a record still unbeaten after 30 years

On 6 August 1992, Destriero, a fantastic example of Italian naval technology, left behind the Ambrose Light in New York, the skyscrapers of Manhattan and the Verrazzano bridge to embark on the record-breaking attempt.

At dawn on 9 August 1992, at 6.14 a.m. and 50 seconds, staff manning the Bishop Rock lighthouse in the Scilly isles off England, still shrouded in fog, were surprised to hear the voice of Cesare Fiorio over the radio: “Good Morning, this is the commander of the ship Destriero, we left from New York, please register the date and time of our passage.” “Good morning Destriero, we were not expecting you so soon…” was the operator’s reply.

Destriero: a record still unbeaten after 30 years

Destriero, flying the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda burgee, had covered 3,106 miles in 58 hours, 34 minutes and 50 seconds, at an average speed of 53.09 knots, or 98.323 km/h, taking 21 hours less than the English catamaran Hoverspeed, holder of the previous record.

Waiting for the crew on their arrival was H.H. the Aga Khan, President of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and the main supporter of the project. In addition to the Blue Riband, Destriero was also awarded the New York Yacht Club’s Columbus Atlantic Trophy and the Virgin Atlantic Challenge Trophy, created by Richard Branson.

A Waterspout Was Seen When a Luxury Yacht Sank. What Is It?

Witnesses reported seeing the tornado-like phenomenon hit the Bayesian, a sailing yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday.

The Bayesian sailing yacht

By Eve Sampson

What caused the sinking on Monday of a sailing yacht carrying the British billionaire Mike Lynch and 21 other people off the coast of Sicily is still unknown. But some attention has focused on observations by witnesses, who described seeing a small tornado-like column known as a waterspout forming over the water during an abrupt and violent storm as the vessel sank.

Fifteen passengers on the 180-foot yacht, the Bayesian, escaped on a raft before being rescued by a neighboring cruise ship. The body of the ship’s cook was recovered on Monday and six people remain unaccounted for , including Mr. Lynch and his daughter Hannah, according to officials with Sicily’s civil protection agency.

Prosecutors in the nearby city of Termini Imerese have opened an inquiry into the cause of the sinking.

Here is what to know about waterspouts, a surprisingly common weather phenomenon that may have helped sink the luxury yacht.

What are waterspouts?

Waterspouts are columns of spinning air and moisture — similar to tornadoes over water, according to the National Weather Service .

While some form in fair weather, and are aptly called fair weather waterspouts, another more dangerous variety called tornadic waterspouts develops downward from a thunderstorm. These tornadic waterspouts can either form as regular tornadoes over land and move out to sea, or form in a storm already over a large body of water, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association .

Fair weather waterspouts are weak, often dissipate quickly and do not cause major damage, according to the agencies, but tornadic waterspouts are more often associated with high winds, dangerous and frequent lightning, and hail. The Italian authorities recorded strong winds and intense lightning activity at the time the yacht went down.

How common are waterspouts?

Experts say waterspouts may be more common than tornadoes, but because oceans are so vast, they are more difficult to track — and as difficult to predict.

“The Mediterranean is possibly one of the places where waterspouts are most likely around the world due to the warm ocean surface and a climate that is very susceptible to thunderstorms throughout the summer and autumn,” according to a statement by Peter Inness, a meteorologist at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Inness pointed to a 2022 study by scientists from University of Barcelona , which found that waterspouts occurred more frequently over warmer sea surfaces. The North Atlantic ocean has been unusually hot for over a year, repeatedly reaching record highs for the time of year , according to data from the oceanic association.

The International Centre for Waterspout Research on Monday said on X , the platform formerly known as Twitter, that it had confirmed 18 waterspouts near Italy in recent days, and several fishermen in the area of the accident told Italian media that they had witnessed a waterspout near the yacht.

What may have happened?

Karsten Börner, the captain of the nearby boat that rescued the 15 passengers, said in an interview that he saw the Bayesian about 490 feet away before the wind and lightning picked up.

While it was difficult to see what happened amid the storm, “my theory was that she was capsized first and then went down over the stern,” he said.

Towering over 237 feet tall, the Bayesian mast was one of the tallest aluminum masts in the world and it also had a special keel that could be raised or lowered, according to its manufacturer, Perini Navi. A keel is the downward-extending centerline underneath a boat that can help stabilize the vessel.

“In this case, having a tall aluminum mast would not make it the safest port to be in case of a storm,” said Andrea Ratti, associate professor of nautical design and architecture technology the Politecnico di Milano.

He added that “a lot of questions will remain until we have other elements at our disposal.”

Yesterday at Muggiano ( La Spezia ) shipyard saw the prominent Italian builder Fincantieri celebrate the twentieth anniversary of its 67m motor yacht Destriero . Setting a record which still stands, the Destriero superyacht is the fastest motor yacht in the world which crossed the Atlantic in 1992.

Fincantieri celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Destriero superyacht's challenge

The monohull, built in 1991 in less than a year by Fincantieri, sailed 3,106 nautical miles without refueling, from Ambrose Light, New York to Bishop Rock lightship on the Scilly Isles, England , in 58 hours at an average speed of 53 knots (reaching peaks of 70), and won once more the Blue Riband which in 1933 had been awarded to the legendary transatlantic liner, the Rex.

In order to celebrate the challenge, on September 5th 1992 the luxury yacht Destriero was assigned also the Virgin Atlantic Trophy by the English tycoon Richard Branson for the fastest crossing with no regulation limits and the Columbus Atlantic Trophy by the New York Yacht Club for the double crossing.

Built at the shipyards of Muggiano and Riva Trigoso, the Destriero was at that time the largest ship in light alloy ever to be constructed and one of the vessels with the highest  concentration of efficiency, power and technology. At 67 metres long with a beam of 13 metres and 60,000 HP, the yacht could reach average speeds of over 60 knots. Record figures, the pride of Italy, a result based on a wealth of experience in the construction of ships gained by Fincantieri in the course of over two centuries. The Destriero marked for Fincantieri the beginning of the production of a new generation of high speed vessels with consequent benefits for commercial and occupational development.

The challenge of the Destriero started with the aim to break the record for crossing the Atlantic, for which the Blue Riband has been awarded since 1838. Her adventure was born thanks to the passion for naval technology of Ismaili Prince Karim Aga Khan, at that time President of the Costa Smeralda Yacht Club. He sponsored the initiative, supported by leading testimonials of Italian industry and culture of the time.

After the event Cesare Fiorio, head of the Destriero Challenge program and pilot during the crossing, said “The Destriero is so important because she left a mark universally recognized by fans and not; she is a milestone in the shipping history and thanks to her we got on to high-speed navigation.”

Corrado Antonini, Chairman of Fincantieri, commented “Fincantieri is building in its US shipyards a brand-new line of Litoral Combat Ships, the US Navy backbone of the future. Thanks also to the Destriero experience we succeeded in entering the most challenging and prestigious market: the US Defence one.

When talking about the fastest boat across the Atlantic, a few contenders come to mind. Among them, the Destriero is notably impressive.

It is the fastest boat across the Atlantic . This Italian luxury yacht holds the record with an Atlantic crossing time of 2 days, 10 hours, 34 minutes, and 47 seconds.

Operated by skipper Cesare Fiorio, the Destriero averaged an incredible speed of 45.7 knots during the voyage in 1992.

Previous Records

The history of the fastest boats crossing the Atlantic Ocean is fascinating. The title was held by various vessels over the years, many of which competed for the prestigious Blue Riband Award and the Hales Trophy.

The Blue Riband was given to boats holding the record for the fastest westbound crossing, with the trophy representing the highest achievement in maritime speed.

A notable previous record holder was the ocean liner SS United States, built in the early 1950s, which held the record for more than a decade. It completed the crossing in 3 days, 10 hours, and 42 minutes.

Another previous record for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic Ocean by a boat is held by the Hoverspeed Great Britain. On June 23, 1990, this Incat-built ship completed the journey in 3 days, 7 hours, and 54 minutes, breaking previous records and setting a remarkable new standard for maritime speed.

Technical Features of the Boats

Now, let’s explore the technical features of the boats that have set records for speed while crossing the Atlantic Ocean.

Construction and Design

Destriero and the Hoverspeed Great Britain are both made of aluminum, but Destriero features a monohull design, while the Hoverspeed Great Britain is designed as a catamaran.

In contrast, the SS United States, built several decades earlier, is primarily constructed from steel and also features a monohull design.

The following table summarizes the construction and design of these boats:

Vessel Construction Material Design Built
Destriero Aluminum Monohull 1991
SS United States Steel Monohull 1952
Hoverspeed Great Britain Aluminum Catamaran 1990

Historical Context

The Atlantic Ocean has been a vital part of maritime history, connecting continents and facilitating trade, travel, and the exchange of ideas. Throughout history, vessels have swiftly sought ways to cross the Atlantic, from the early days of the Christopher Columbus voyage to modern technological advancements.

We’ll explore the fastest boats that have crossed the Atlantic and how they evolved over time.

World War II saw significant improvements in maritime technology, with ships becoming faster and more efficient. One notable example is the SS United States, a liner that held the transatlantic crossing speed record of 3.5 days in 1952. However, the advent of air transportation diminished the importance of these grand liners.

In the early days of transatlantic crossings, steamship voyages took notably longer. For instance, in August 1838, the steamship Great Western completed its trailblazing voyage from New York to Bristol in 15 days.

Additionally, Philadelphia, Italy, and other countries have contributed to the development of fast and reliable ships. Some vessels, such as the majestic RMS Titanic, have become symbols of luxury and grandeur.

As we explore the history of the fastest boats crossing the Atlantic Ocean and delve into the notable achievements and advances they represent, it becomes evident that the spirit of competition and technological innovation has been integral to the story.

Maritime achievements of the past, including the impressive record set by the Hoverspeed Great Britain, inspire future explorations and improvements in maritime transportation.

The Races Over the Years

Over the years, numerous races and records have been set for the fastest boat to cross the Atlantic Ocean. These competitions have attracted a variety of participants, witnessed incredible victories, and even sparked a few controversies.

Here, we’ll delve into the notable participants, some of the most significant victories, and the controversies that have arisen as boats have vied to claim the title of the fastest Atlantic crossing.

The Participants

Throughout the history of Atlantic crossings, various types of vessels have taken part in these races. Each has attempted to make its mark in this prestigious contest, from early passenger liners to modern high-speed catamarans.

The participants have included dedicated race teams, professional sailors, and even private boat owners who have all sought to test the limits of their vessels and crews.

The Victories

As mentioned, the current record holder for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic Ocean is the Destriero. In 1992, this impressively designed boat, measuring 68 meters in length, 13 meters in beam, and boasting 60,000 horsepower, managed to achieve an average speed of over 60 knots.

This incredible achievement remains unbeaten to date, and the Destriero still stands as a symbol of Italian pride and nautical engineering prowess.

Another major prize for Atlantic crossings is the Blue Riband, awarded to the passenger liner with the record for the highest average speed during a regular transatlantic voyage. This illustrious accolade has been held by a number of famous ships throughout history, including the RMS Queen Mary and the SS United States.

The Controversies

As with any competitive environment, the pursuit of breaking records in Atlantic crossings has not been without its share of controversies. There have been disputes over the legitimacy of some records due to differences in routes or vessel classifications.

Concerns over safety and environmental impacts related to high-speed crossings have also arisen, sparking debate within the maritime community.

Ecological Impact and Sustainability

As we delve into the world of high-speed boat crossings in the Atlantic Ocean, it's essential to understand the ecological impact of these vessels and the sustainability practices adopted by crews.

High-speed boat crossings often generate a significant carbon footprint, as they require vast amounts of fuel and energy to propel the vessels across the Atlantic Ocean at record speeds.

However, several innovative solutions have been implemented by record-setting crews to minimize their ecological impact. These efforts include the use of renewable energy sources, such as solar panels and underwater turbines, to generate electricity during crossings.

Moreover, sustainable practices on board the vessels, such as waste reduction and recycling, are essential to ensure a more eco-friendly voyage. Crews also make conscious efforts to avoid sensitive marine areas and follow designated routes to minimize disturbances to marine ecosystems.

These practices contribute significantly to responsible voyaging across the Atlantic Ocean.

Five bodies found in sunken superyacht, officials say

Divers have found five bodies in the sunken wreckage of a superyacht that sank off Sicily this week, Italian officials told news agencies and local media Wednesday, leaving one person still missing.

Three bodies were brought ashore and two others were also found inside the shipwreck, Salvatore Cocina, head of the Sicily civil protection agency, told the Associated Press, after divers were photographed by the agency unloading body bags. Cocina did not identify the deceased.

The British-flagged, 183-foot-long Bayesian was carrying 12 passengers and 10 crew members roughly half a mile from the Sicilian fishing village of Porticello when it encountered what authorities called a “violent storm” about 4 a.m. Monday.

Of the 15 people rescued, eight – including a 1-year-old girl – were taken to hospitals in conditions that were not life-threatening. The body of the yacht’s chef, identified as Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian Antiguan, was found during initial recovery efforts.

Among the passengers was Mike Lynch, 59, the British founder of the tech venture capital firm Invoke Capital and co-founder of the tech firms Autonomy and Darktrace. This summer, he was acquitted of all charges after a decadelong U.S. fraud trial related to the 2011 sale of Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard.

The voyage on the Bayesian, owned by a company controlled by Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was intended to be a celebration of his legal victory, Britain’s Telegraph reported.

Among those missing were Lynch; his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy; and attorney Chris Morvillo, a partner at Clifford Chance in New York who represented Lynch in the recently concluded legal battle, and his wife, Neda. Bacares, Lynch’s wife, was among the survivors.

It’s not clear exactly what type of storm struck the Bayesian, but weather data suggests it was probably a tornadic waterspout or severe thunderstorm.

Charlotte Golunski, a guest of Lynch who was rescued, described to Italian media holding onto her 1-year-old daughter, Sophie, amid the storm. “For two seconds I lost my baby in the sea,” she told Giornale di Sicilia. “Then I immediately hugged her again amid the fury of the waves.”

Lynch sold Autonomy, which was once England’s biggest software company, to Hewlett-Packard in 2011 for more than $11 billion. He was subsequently accused of overvaluing the company and was charged in the United States with fraud. He was acquitted in June.

The Bayesian was built in 2008 by Italian shipmaker Perini Navi, according to the SuperYacht Times.

The Sir Robert, a Dutch-flagged sailing vessel anchored nearby, responded immediately to help survivors before the Italian coast guard arrived.

The yacht sank to a depth of more than 160 feet. The first attempt by fire-brigade cave divers to search inside the yacht was unsuccessful, rescue authorities said.

5th body recovered from Mike Lynch's family yacht off Sicily as questions mount over luxury vessel's sinking

By Anna Matranga

Updated on: August 22, 2024 / 6:55 AM EDT / CBS News

Rome — Divers recovered the body of a fifth victim of the Bayesian superyacht wreck Thursday morning, Sicily Civil Protection Chief Salvo Cocina confirmed to CBS News, but Italian Coast Guard spokesperson Vincenzo Zagarola said they were still working to recover the sixth and final body from the doomed vessel. The six bodies had remained stuck inside the 184-foot luxury yacht for days after it sank early Monday morning off the coast of Palermo, Sicily in a severe thunderstorm.

Witnesses earlier told several news agencies that a sixth body bag had been brought ashore, but authorities never confirmed the recovery of the final victim.

Four bodies were retrieved Wednesday from the Bayesian, which was on a 90 degree angle on the seafloor at a depth of over 160 feet. The vessel's position and items that moved around inside the ill-fated yacht made recovery efforts slow and hazardous.

Italian authorities have not officially identified the remains recovered  from the Bayesian, which belonged to the wife of British tech magnate Mike Lynch. Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, was among the 15 people who managed to escape from the boat as it sank quickly on Monday, but he and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah were believed to be among the people whose bodies have been recovered.

Another victim, the Bayesian superyacht's chef, was found dead soon after the boat capsized. Along with Lynch and his daughter, the technology mogul's American lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda, and British banker Jonathan Bloomer and his wife were believed to have been trapped in the yacht when it sank.

Questions as to how the state-of-the-art boat could have gone down so quickly have mounted steadily since the accident.

Italian media were reporting Thursday that, after questioning survivors and witnesses, Italian prosecutors had opened an official investigation into a possible "culpable shipwreck." No individuals had been named as potential suspects.

On Thursday, Giovanni Costantino, head of the Italian Sea Group, which owns the company Perini Navi, which built the Bayesian in 2008, blamed human error.

"A Perini ship resisted Hurricane Katrina, a Category 5 [hurricane]. Does it seem to you that it can't resist a tornado from here?" he remarked to the newspaper Corriere della Sera. "It is good practice when the ship is at anchor to have a guard on the bridge, and if there was one he could not have failed to see the storm coming. Instead, it took on water with the guests still in the cabin. ... They ended up in a trap, those poor people ended up like mice."

bayesian-yacht.jpg

One possible factor could have been that the ship's keel — a fin-like structure that sticks out from the bottom of the boat, designed to provide stability and counterweight to the huge mast — was not fully deployed. The yacht had a retractable keel that could be raised for entry into shallow harbors. But a raised keel at sea would have made the ship much more vulnerable to instability in the strong winds that struck early Monday morning.

When asked whether divers had seen the ship's keel in a raised position, a spokesman for the Italian Coast Guard told CBS News that only the prosecutor investigating the incident could confirm such information but that the Coast Guard "was not denying" it.

The ship's captain, 51-year-old New Zealand national James Cutfileld, was questioned for two hours by prosecutors on Thursday, according to Italian media.

Breaking news, inside the $40m bayesian yacht that capsized, leaving 6 dead and 1 still missing.

The massive superyacht Bayesian that sank off the coast of Italy on Monday won numerous awards for its sleek interior design — and was sold to its original owner for nearly $40 million.

The luxury sailing ship was carrying 22 people when it capsized and sank during a fierce storm early Monday.

A handout picture, provided by Perini Navi Press Office, shows the ''Bayesian'', the 56-metre sailing unit sunk in a violent storm off Palermo, Italy, 19 August 2024

The bodies of five of six missing passengers, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch , 69, and his daughter, Hannah, 18, have been recovered.

The ship’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, has also been confirmed dead.

Divers continued searching the wreckage of the 184-foot-long, British-flagged vessel, previously called Salute, on Wednesday after discovering four of the bodies.

When it was built in 2008, the Bayesian had the tallest aluminum mast in the world, standing at 237 feet, earning it the award for best exterior styling at the World Superyacht Awards in 2009, the Telegraph reported.

The sprawling superyacht’s interior, decorated with sleek, minimalist furnishings created by Remi Tessier, has also won numerous awards.

The ship, which accommodated 12 guests, had a master bedroom and three double and two twin bedrooms.

It also featured beige sofas, dark wood furnishings, and a teak deck equipped with a large canvas awning to keep guests cool, according to the outlet.

Some of the ship’s styling, including thin brown pillars and miniature terra cotta sculptures, was inspired by Japanese culture.

What to know after a tornado sank the yacht Bayesian off the coast of Sicily:

  • A superyacht capsized off the coast of Sicily after a tornado hit the area early Monday, killing six passengers and leaving one missing.
  • The first two bodies found inside the wreckage of the Bayesian superyacht were identified as British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his teenage daughter, Hannah, according to a report.
  • Lynch — known as “Britain’s Bill Gates” — had invited guests from Clifford Chance, a legal firm that represented him, and Invoke Capital, his own company, on the voyage,  according to the Telegraph .
  • Security camera footage shot from 650 feet from where the  Bayesian sank Monday  shows it disappearing.
  • Italian authorities have said the chances of anyone else surviving the disaster were very small, but “never say never.”
  • A rare and unexpected “black swan” weather event may have led to the  Bayesian’s speedy demise , maritime experts say.

The extravagant ship won best interior at the International Superyacht Society Awards in 2008 and was also voted one of the best large sailing yachts at the 2009 World Superyacht Awards, according to the outlet.

The yacht’s original owner, John Groenewoud, a Dutch real estate developer, reportedly bought the ship for £30 million ($39 million) when it was built. In 2014, he sold the ship with an asking price of £27 million ($35 million).

The Bayesian is currently owned by Revtom, a company that listed Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, as its legal owner.

It was named after the Bayesian statistical model that helps financial investors calculate risk — the subject of Lynch’s PhD that later helped him build his empire.

The vessel, operated by yachting company Camper & Nicholsons, had twin 965hp MTU engines, which gave it a range of 3,600 nautical miles at 13 to 15 knots (14 to 17 mph).

An ambulance carries the body of a person which was found at the scene where the luxury yacht sank.

RSB Rigging carried out rig service works on the ship with Astilleros de Mallorca, a shipyard facility in Palma, in November 2016.

The Bayesian returned in September 2020 for scheduled service works, including having its mast removed and reinstalled.

Steve Branagh, managing director of RSB Rigging, told the Telegraph: “At this time, our deepest sympathies go out to the friends and families of all those affected by this dreadful tragedy.”

Awakening and 2nd Run of ItalianGerman Sleeping Beauty Destriero to the USA for Blue Riband

Awakening and 2nd Run of ItalianGerman Sleeping Beauty Destriero to the USA for Blue Riband

Nautica Report

  • 01/03/2022 10:40

On Aug. 09, 1992 the world’s one and only racing yacht Destriero (aluminium hull, 3 turbines of US Fighter F/A-18 Hornet derivate with each 20.000HP=60.000HP, 750.000 liter fuel tank, jetstream propulsion) of Aga Khan and Giovanni Agnelli , FIAT, win after 58 hours, 34 minutes and 50 seconds the up to day valid worldrecord between USA and Europe , but not the originally envisaged legendary Blue Riband of the Atlantic for the originally fastest immigrant passenger vessel from Europe to the USA.

After failing the Blue Riband because wrong certification as a private yacht and not as a commercial passenger ship, Destriero was hidden like Sleeping Beauty for decades in U.K and nowadays at Lürssen Shipyard, Bremen, heavy DNA protected behind a barbed wire fence.

luxury yacht destriero

As I know and have seen physically Destriero from birth in 1992 and speedboat consortium member Roger Klueh, Speedboat USA-Cuba Worldrecord, together we are wondering since many years what will happen to Sleeping Beauty Destriero:

www.shots.media/travel/2020/destriero-was-passiert-mit-der-legendaeren-superyacht/63108

In Dec. 2021 Alberto Scuro, President of Automotoclub Storico Italiano, sent a letter to Aga Khan to request the ship in operational condition as an Italian Technical Monument/Heritage. We, the consortium of international speedboat specialists, highly appreciate Alberto Scuro‘s initiative and added due to the fact that the also element to success turbines are from German MTU to make an ItalianGerman 30. Birthday event out of it.

If Albert Scuro would get Destriero from Aga Khan and additionally in the requested operationable condition we suggested to win with a mixed ItalianGerman crew under one Italian Captain and German Captain Roger Klueh in a 2nd run now finally the legendary Blue Riband between New York and Europe and to hand over the Trophae to Aga Khan for his great Naval Life Work. As Roger Klueh knows already the first part from USA towards Atlantic heading East from his successful USA-Cuba razorblade hellride Speedboat Worldrecord with huge waves and one of the two propulsions broken.

Destriero, this ship sets thirty years ago new highest technical innovations and standards valid up to day.

William Brangham:

Hezbollah fired more than 50 rockets towards Israel today, some causing damage in the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights. Israel's ambulance service reported the projectiles hit several private homes and injured one person, causing alarm among community members.

Einav Perez, Golan Heights Resident (through interpreter):

Some of the residents want to leave. Others are patriots who want to stay. But it cannot continue this way. Every sound of a door shutting makes us think it's a boom. This time, it wasn't a door, but a serious boom that cost us a lot.

Hezbollah says the barrage was in response to Israeli airstrikes deep inside Lebanon.

Residents of one Lebanese village held a funeral today for a man they say was killed in an Israeli attack. It comes a day after Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with mediators in the region to push a proposal aimed at bridging the gaps in the Gaza cease-fire talks. Egyptian officials reportedly expressed skepticism today that Hamas would in fact accept that proposal. Talks are expected to resume in Cairo tomorrow.

Health authorities in Congo say they have recorded more than 1,000 mpox cases in the last week amid an urgent need for vaccines. Congo accounts for more than 90 percent of the cases reported in Africa so far this year. Last week, the WHO classified the outbreak as a global health emergency.

African officials say Western nations in Japan have pledged several hundred thousand vaccine doses, but Congo's health minister says the country alone needs some three million doses to control the outbreak.

In Italy, divers found five more bodies while searching the luxury yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday. Recovery crews unloaded body bags from a rescue vessel in Porticello. They're still searching for one final missing person. Fifteen other passengers and crew escaped in a lifeboat and were rescued.

Authorities say they believe the British-flagged Bayesian, seen here in file video, was struck by a tornado on the water, which is known as a water spout. But questions remain as to why the yacht sank so quickly.

Russian officials say that Ukraine launched one of its largest drone attacks on Moscow last night since Russia's invasion in 2022. Russia claims to have struck down 45 drones, including 11 over Moscow itself. There has been no independent verification of those figures.

That comes as Ukraine digs in to defend the city of Pokrovsk in Eastern Ukraine from Russian advances. Its capture would be an important victory for Russia, as Ukraine pushes forward with its own incursion further north in Russia's Kursk region.

In Moscow today, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Ukraine's military advances there undermine any chances for peace talks.

Maria Zakharova, Spokeswoman, Russian Foreign Ministry (through interpreter):

Who will negotiate with them after this, after the atrocities, the terror that they are committing against peaceful residents, the civilian population, infrastructure and peaceful facilities?

Ukraine's military claims to have taken nearly 500 square miles in Kursk since it first entered Russian territory earlier this month.

Back here in the U.S., the economy added far fewer jobs last year and into 2024 than previously reported. In its revised data out today, the Labor Department said that there were 818,000 fewer jobs created between April of last year and this March. That's an average of 174,000 jobs per month, far fewer than the 242,000 that was initially reported. This downgrade follows a disappointing report last month and comes as the U.S. Federal Reserve considers whether to cut interest rates next month.

On Wall Street today, stocks ended slightly higher after the Fed raised hopes of an interest rate cut next month. The Dow Jones industrial average added 55 points, inching closer to the 41000-point level. The Nasdaq tacked on more than 100 points for a ninth win in 10 sessions. The S&P 500 also ended higher on the day.

And we have two passings of note.

New Jersey Congressman Bill Pascrell Jr. Died earlier this morning. The 14-term Democrat was a fixture of his hometown of Paterson, where he had served as mayor, before running for Congress in 1996. Pascrell was a long time advocate for emergency responders and sat on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee. No cause of death has been announced, but he had been in and out of the hospital for months.

Congressman Bill Pascrell was 87 years old.

Also today, NBA Hall of Famer Al Attles has died. As one of the first Black head coaches in the league, Attles led the Golden State warriors to a championship in 1975. Attles, seen here defending a pass in 1963, was known as the Destroyer for his particularly physical style of play.

He spent six decades with the Warriors as a player, a general manager, and team ambassador. It is the longest stint by a player with the same franchise in NBA history. Al Attles was 87 years old.
