Find your ferry

Zadar is a historical town in central Dalmatia which is very popular among tourists. That is why it is perfectly connected to several islands in the Zadar archipelago and there is a connection with Ancona in Italy.

Table of Contents

All Zadar car ferries are now operated from the ferry terminal in Gaženica , located 4 km southeast of the old town of Zadar.

The old port of Zadar remains the port for passenger-only ferries, to destinations like e.g. Pula, Rijeka, Mali Losinj, and Silba, just to mention a few.

Zadar Gazenica Ferry Port

The Zadar Gazenica port is located at Gaženička cesta , on the southeastern outskirts of Zadar. The ferry port is connected to the main bus terminal with city bus line Nr. 9.

The ferry port has a great signing system, it is easy for travelers to navigate to the right boarding lanes.

The port has a brand-new terminal building , which boosts facilities like a waiting room, WIFI, restrooms, Jadrolinija ticket office, and several coffee bars.

Zadar Old Town Ferry Port

The port in Zadar Center is not a real port, it is simply mooring berths along the northern shore of the old town. The address is Liburnska Obala nr. 4 , and this is the GPS coordinates 44°07’00.8″N 15°13’38.0″E.

The old town ferry port has no facilities, but as it is located on the old town peninsula you have plenty of facilities nearby such as bars, restaurants, shops, a post office, a ticket office, ATM-s, etc.

Few tips from my site

  • I have seen 10 passenger ferries lined up at the port, some from the same company, so make sure to check which one is the right one (If necessary ask the ferry staff)
  • There is no shade, so watch out for the sun.

Getting to and from the ports in Zadar

If you’re staying in Zadar and if you want to reach the islands of Ugljan , Dugi Otok , Iž , Molat , and so on , here is how you get to the main ferry terminal and the old town port near the city centre from different parts of the town:

If you’re staying in the centre of Zadar, the old port is minutes away from most of the historical sights , so you can easily walk there. However, if you want to reach the ferry terminal Gaženica, you have to first take bus number 2 or 4 to the main bus station in Zadar and from there take bus number 9 to the Gaženica ferry terminal.

If you’re staying in Diklo or Borik , you have to take bus number 8 to the main bus station and from there take numbers 2 or 4 to reach the catamaran port in the center or bus number 9 to reach the ferry terminal in Gaženica.

The bus ticket is around 2 Euro, buses run from early morning to late evening.

From all the three parts of the city mentioned above you can also take a taxi, bolt or Uber which won’t cost you a lot since it’s quite a short distance.

If you’re staying outside of Zadar , for example in Petrčane (12 km from Zadar), there are regular bus lines between the main bus station in Zadar and Petrčane. The ticket is only a few euros.

Getting from Zadar airport to the ports

The airport of Zadar – Zemunik is around 10 km from Gaženica ferry terminal and 12 km from the catamaran port. Once you land, you can take a pre-booked transfer (which will cost you around 25 euros) or take a taxi.

There are also shuttle buses running from the airport towards Zadar – the main bus station. From there take numbers 2 or 4 to reach the catamaran port in the centre or the bus number 9 to reach the ferry terminal in Gaženica. The ticket for the shuttle bus is 5 euros and the trip to the main bus station in Zadar takes 15 – 20 minutes.

If you want to read more about transportation from the airport to the ferry terminal, you can click on this link :

Getting from other destinations in Croatia and Europe to Zadar ferry terminal/catamaran port:

Zadar is very well connected by regular or seasonal bus lines to many Croatian and even some European destinations. As mentioned above, the main bus station is located between the catamaran port (2 km) and the Gaženica ferry terminal (3.5 km). Click on this link to see the exact location

You might also want to choose to travel by car and you can choose both the highway or the coastal road. When you enter the city of Zadar, depending on where you want to go – Gaženica ferry terminal or the catamaran port (located right in the centre), you simply follow the signs and you’ll find it without a problem .

Sailing conditions

When you rent a catamaran in Zadar… enjoy a typical Mediterranean climate. In summer, the average temperature is 27 degrees Celsius during the day - in winter it is around 3 or 4 degrees. The Maestral, a north-westerly wind blowing from the sea towards the land, not to be confused with the mistral and tramontane winds, makes the summer season very enjoyable, and island-hopping all the more appealing. That is why we advise you to sail between April and September, as your skipper will have the best sailing conditions. Croatia remains a high-pressure tourist zone in the middle of summer, during the months of July and August. If you are looking for more peace and quiet, rent your catamaran charter in Zadar outside the summer period. Don't worry, because at the beginning and end of summer the temperatures are always pleasant in Croatia!

6-day Sailing Itinerary from Zadar

There’s so much to see and so many places to visit from Zadar, that one week just isn’t long enough to see and visit them all. Most places you go, you’ll find unspoilt beaches, bays, cliffs and islands, along with idyllic little fishing and farming villages, so you can’t go too far wrong, even if you just follow your nose and decide spontaneously where to go.

Zadar - 6 day sailing itinerary

This route takes in a lot of the nearby islands and clocks in at 116 nautical miles – which works out at just under 20 nM a day. As you’ll likely be going at a pace of 5 knots or above, that means the sailing should only take 4-5 hours a day, which leaves plenty of time to go at a leisurely pace, to explore your start or end destinations in depth, or to take your time and bob into bays, swim on some beaches, practice man-overboard drills, or just relax.

As we’ll be spending a night in the Kornati marine national park, it’s worth buying an entry pass in advance (since the ticket inspectors will sting you for an extra 50%, and they patrol the islands every night). The unwritten rule is that you need a pass for every day that you’re in the national park after 4pm, so if you’re following our itinerary, a one day pass should suffice.

Ist

From Zadar, we’re heading in a north-westerly direction. You’ll pass lots of other charter yachts heading other directions, but we’re heading off the beaten track to a small farming village on the island of Ist. The prevailing wind is landward from the sea, so it should be a simple reach or broad reach to sail there.

Ist is an island of vines and olive groves, as well as sandy beaches, and it’s a quiet and tranquil place to spend the night, even though there are ferry connections to other islands. There’s a couple of bars and a church, but essentially this is a place to get away from it all and to enjoy life on the ocean waves.

Veli Iz

There are beaches on the south side of Molat, or you could pop into the town itself – which, oddly enough, was visited by King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson in 1939. But then we’re heading in a south-westerly direction, reaching against the prevailing wind as we follow the channels between the islands and to the east side of Iz.

Veli Iz is a small fishing village which also happens to have its own Roman fort and 14th century church. Founded by fishermen way back when, the village also has a number of decent seafood restaurants, and is famous for its decorative pottery (for which there is even a museum). Sadly, though there were 70 pottery companies on the island in bygone years, there is now only one left.

Zut

You certainly need to stock up because Zut is out in the wilderness. Situated in a sheltered bay which has been used by sailors for centuries, the tourist board built a pontoon and walkway in the bay in recent years to make it easier for sailors to get to shore, and to increase the number of jobs on the island by 1200% - from 1 to 12 people.

When you moor up you’ll find a couple of small shops and bars or eateries (don’t rely on them to be open, just in case, but they’re good if they are), and not much else. It’s a very peaceful bay to spend the night in, and a very unspoilt island to explore.

Piskera

There are beaches and bays to explore, and you’re allowed to walk on the islands if you dare to brave the heat. The view from the top of the hills is certainly quite special, but it can take a bit of effort to get there.

From Zut, we’re heading west (likely beating or close-hauled) to pass over the top of Kornati island - the biggest island in the national park – and following down it’s western coast in a south-easterly direction, probably in a broad reach against the prevailing summer wind. Enjoy weaving your way around the islands, finding beaches, bays and even bars on the largely unspoilt islands. You need to head slightly west to ensure that you hit the west coast of Piskera, but it is fairly straight-forward to find the well-sheltered marina and to moor up for the night.

Piskera is similar to Zut in that it is a marina which was built primarily to make the Kornati islands easier for sailors to explore, so you won’t find a town here – though you will find a restaurant, an over-priced shop (but heck, it’s in the middle of nowhere, so it can’t be easy to stock it up!) and modern toilet facilities. It should be another tranquil night, although the bar here can get quite lively if there are enough sailors in the marina.

Murter

Starting in a south-easterly direction until we reach the southern tip of Kornati island, we then need to bear north-easterly to traverse across the channel to Murter. This should be a simple run with the prevailing wind, and you might be able to get away with a broad reach, but bonus marks are available if you manage to goose-wing your way back towards the mainland.

Murter is the largest town on the island of Murter (which isn’t really an island any more, since the arrival of a road connection to the mainland). Surrounded by brilliant beaches, it’s also popular with land-lubbing tourists, and there’s plenty of lively bars and restaurants along the waterfront, which will make a change of atmosphere from Piskera and Zut.

The best beaches are on the west coast, and you could anchor up here if you had time, or, if you fancy some exercise, you could walk to the top of the hill (where there is world war two military base) and enjoy watching the sun set over the Kornati islands.

Milna

Working our way up the coast, we’ll sail past Biograd, which is one of the most popular charter bases in Europe, and the home to the biggest boat show in Croatia (check out our destination guide for Biograd if you want to find out more about it, but it’s not worth stopping there today as it will be busy with people returning their charter yachts).

Further up the channel is lovers island. This is the most perfect heart-shaped island in the world. It was only really ‘discovered’ after the invention of Google Earth, but it’s now a romantic destination in it’s own right, and hundreds of people come and propose here each year. It’s a romantic place to go, and it’s traditional to loop around the island (or make a heart shape on your plotter if you’re skilled enough) if you’re going past it, and throwing a euro into the waters around here is supposed to sort out your love life.

Follow the coast further north and you’ll arrive back at Sukosan (the biggest marina in Croatia) or Zadar marina. You should refuel your yacht or catamaran before returning the boat to roughly the same space you took her from on day one. Someone will come and inspect the boat, but you’ll still be sleeping on her tonight.

If you’ve not had chance to visit the old town of Zadar, then now is a good time to go and see the 3,000 year old UNESCO world heritage site. Most bars near both marina’s will be lively with happy sailors recounting their adventures to anyone who will listen tonight, and it’s the last night of the holiday for so many people that it shouldn’t be difficult to find a lively atmosphere.

Hopefully you’ve been impressed by the sun, sea, sailing and general tranquillity of the Croatian islands, hopefully your crew all got on well together (and maybe there was a holiday romance?), and hopefully you’ve had a brilliant, enjoyable and relaxing holiday. Have a safe trip home, and, when you start to miss the sea and the sunshine, remember to visit PlainSailing.com to start planning your next epic adventure!

Sailing Conditions

Croatia Sailing - Wind Conditions

The winds are particularly reliable throughout the sailing season, when local sailors claim that they can set their watch by them: there are Mistral winds during the day which peak between 9am and mid-day, then take a break for a couple of hours, before returning (“after lunch”) for another few hours at 3pm until dusk, when the winds die down to a light breeze, if anything at all.

The daytime winds are usually Force 4 or Force 5, and their prevailing direction is landward, which is driven by the sun – as the land warms up and the air above it rises during the day, air is sucked from the sea. A little further out from the coast, and away from the Mistral winds, then the winds shoots down the Adriatic channel into the heart of the Mediterranean.

Zadar - Average Temperature

We use three marinas in Zadar, each offering excellent and modern facilities, and great levels of care for our guests.

If you're staying in the area before or after your charter, we can recommend these places that are close to Marina Zadar and D-Marin Borik - Prestige design rooms or El mirador rooms - or these places next to Sukosan - Hotel Joso or White Residence .

Marina Zadar

Marina Zadar is based right in the centre of town, which means it’s quite an atmospheric place to spend the night, and there’s plenty of bars and restaurants. The marina also boasts its own casino!

Marina Zadar

Marina Dalmacija, Sukosan

The recently built Marina Dalmacija is just 7km to the south of the historic old town (in the suburb of Sukosan), and, with space for 1,200 boats, is the biggest marina in Croatia. It has all the latest mod cons, including a swish beach bar and a waterfront restaurant with stunning decking over the sea.

High summer in Croatia might be quite busy with tourists, but the weather is simply glorious. If you like more action, vivacity, buzzing streets and warm Mediterranean temperatures, you will hit the spot, if your book a  sailing trip  in peak season months  July or August . If you prefer to have more quiet on your  cruise  - to really feel the genuine heartbeat of the country, choose June or September . You can also get better deals and discounts on  bareboat charters and yacht rentals in shoulder season.

A sailing trip in September  when the sea and air temperatures are still warm is every skippers delight. Especially if you consider that the winds are a bit stronger. For an average day-sailors and newbies looking for a relaxing  sailing vacation  a trip in  June is the perfect choice.

What does skipper do on a yacht?

When it comes to navigation and safety at sea, skipper is fully in charge of the yacht. He should have well developed organisation and communication skills, to harmonise the crew's wishes with the actual maritime situation.

A good skipper should make the guests aboard feel comfortable, relaxed and safe on their sailing trip . Croatian skippers are communicative, opened and full of tips for guests visiting this hidden Mediterranean gem. It is customary to take care for skippers meals and food aboard.

Where do we buy supplies for yacht charter?

It is recommended to supply your yacht at least for the first two days at sea. You will have plenty of time before embarkationto do that or pre-order the supplies at the provisioning company . Every marina in Croatia has shops and supermarkets, where you can buy as much as you need for one week. There will be plenty of stops on route, and you can always buy fresh bread, vegetables, fruit, meat and fish, even on the most remote Croatian islands . Breakfast and a quick afternoon snack can be prepared on board. You will have lots of options to explore Croatian delicacies  and try traditional culinary works of art in local restaurants. Your knowledgeable skipper knows best ones...

If you are dining outside, it is customary to invite your skipper to join you at the table. However, if you prefer to dine in privacy, your skipper can eat separately so kindly ensure some pocket money for his meals. Between 30 and 40€ should do.

What are the moorig fees and marina costs?

Port fees at village harbours start at 50€ per night for 40 foot sailing yacht  and can go up to 120€ in premium  ACI marinas . For catamarans  the cost goes up for  50%. The final price also depends on the boat length and the level of marina service and usually includes fresh-water refill, shore power, toilet and use of bathroom facilities . Buoy charge ranges from  30 to 50€ . Anchoring is free of charge. A mixture of above options gives the best balance through the week for most groups.

What should I bring on a sailing charter?

8 things  you don't want to forget to take on a sailing trip:

  • boarding pass and reservation documents
  • sun protection (sun lotion, sunglasses for UV protection, hat)
  • bathing suit or a swimsuit (3-5 pairs)
  • your passport, or personal ID, enough cash
  • swimming towels
  • your personal items (prescription pills, medicine for allergy...)
  • a wind stopper or a wind breaker in summer a long-sleeved cardigan would do
  • positive vibes (leave your worries at home)

With plenty of sun, Croatia is one of the sunniest European destinations. Climate along the Adriatic coast in summer is quite dry and hot. When taking a sailing trip in summer, bring bathing suite, extra swimming towels, and your personal wardrobe. It is highly recommended to bring a soft handbag a duffel bag instead of a plastic suitcase and remember to pack light .

Zadar is a well-known city located in central Dalmatia which has a lot to offer. Croatia’s Adriatic coast is centered around two important maritime regions. The city of Split is the largest and the city of Zadar coming second; with a port and highway network that can easily be reached by air, road or sea. Zadar was the capital of Dalmatia for centuries and is almost 3000 years old with an extensive past. The first settlers were thought to have dated back to the Neolithic era with Slavs settling in during the 7thcentury, Romans colonizing it during the Middle Ages and Venetians constantly trying to gain the power of the city throughout history. Zadar’s proximity to Italy and the important role in the greater Mediterranean Sea region meant it was a prime trading port for both Romans and Greeks. Hundreds of thousands of visitors come here annually to enjoy the wealth of attractions and sites which are saturated with Venetian designs. Strolling within the impressive limestone walls or walking along the ancient stone-paved lanes by the town is a pleasant experience one cannot miss. As you stroll through the old town, the Sea Organ is a prized attraction that creates a unique soundtrack at the edge of the beautiful seafront. This captivating sound show has always struck a chord with its visitors and can be coupled with a wonderful opportunity to catch the magical sunset of Zadar. With a private boat rental in Zadar you can explore many destinations along the coast and have an unforgettable vacation in Croatia.

Rent a boat in Zadar and explore the hidden gems of the Adriatic. Bibinje is a coastal town only 7 km away from Zadar offering the perfect opportunity to swim, snorkel, or kayak. You can also begin your boat trips here since it occupies one of the most capacious marinas in the Adriatic. Nin is the oldest royal city in Croatia only 14 km northwest of Zadar, you can enjoy a day cruise to Queens Beach, very family-friendly with shallow waters and stretching 3 km long making it perfect for a speedboat excursion. In the same vicinity, the lagoon is known to have ‘peloid’, or else known as mud with fantastic healing properties. Boat trips in Zadar can also potter around the coastal resort of Biograd, the seaside village of Pakostane or Sukosan. Pine Beach in Pakostane is a sandy beach offering special moments for children who want to enjoy kayaking, diving and windsurfing. "Dječji raj" beach is also a paradise for younger aged groups who want to try out pedaling or entertain themselves with water sport activities.

With so many beautiful destinations and islands around you can even arrange a two-day trip with a motor yacht and always have the flexibility to refuel by the coast or the visiting port. Pag island is a great two-day itinerary from Zadar known for its parties and dotted with super clubs in Zrce beach, with your motor yacht you will most certainly have a thrilling experience. You can even arrange a 3-day cruise with a catamaran. Catamarans are light, sturdy, fuel-efficient and excellent for exploring the rich marine ecosystems due to their displacement from the water. The Kornati islands are just two hours away and even less with a high-speed or powered catamaran. A favorite holiday destination for many sailors, families with children and the most mature visitors. There are sandy beaches, a warm climate year-round and various types of corals and fish by the seabed, definitely a pleasurable cruise with a yacht. Besides being a place with excessive natural beauty, it is a nautical paradise and one can rent a boat in Zadar without a license to visit it. For a panoramic view, a stop by Fort Tureta is the best place with a view of all the islands and will have you reaching for the camera. The Telašćica Nature Park on the southeastern part of the island of Dugi Otok has some of the best-kept secrets of the Adriatic. There are 13 islands that surround the bay, once you come near you will pass by cliffs that rise up 200 m above the sea and even spot dolphins below. There are numerous caves and coves, you will find many sailboats and catamarans trying to claim their territory for complete isolation and privacy.

Island hopping from Zadar will leave you returning home with an experience of a lifetime. One can visit the island of Dugi Otok on the north-western coast and enjoy the crystal-clear waters of Sakarun, which easily hits the top 10 best beaches of Croatia. For an alluring mix of an old town, busy bars and pristine beaches, you can head to Rab island. Not too far from Rab, you can visit Mali Losinj famous for its lush green vegetation and strong fleet in the Adriatic. You can also head to Krk, the biggest island in Croatia, Cres, and many more islands in the Kvarner Gulf. With a skipper, you will navigate areas with ease and comfort, a preferable advantage for inexperienced sailors who want to visit far-reaching destinations such as Pula by the Istrian coast. You need at least a 5-day adventure by the sea when you are island hopping in Dalmatia, with so many wonderful destinations often being unequaled that you would hate to leave without visiting.

Spend a morning wandering Zadar’s main market close to the harbor on the eastern side of the peninsula, where local vendors sell various Croatian delights 6 mornings a week.

If museums and history are your thing, don’t miss the Archeological Museum and the National Museum of Zadar . Then head to the Forum , the marketplace built by the first Roman emperor Augustus 2,000 years ago. You’re free to inspect the chunks of columns and broken pillars, there’s nothing behind glass or kept under lock and key. If you’re traveling with children, check out the Museum of Illusions .
