My 6-year-old son has never left California. So when he said the Catamaran Resort and Spa ( www.catamaranresort.com ) in San Diego is more fun than Hawaii, I took it with a grain of salt.
But then I started thinking. He has a good point. The tropical island-inspired Catamaran has everything a kid and his family love. It offers a big, beautiful swimming pool, a sandy beach, spacious rooms and suites, bike rentals, a video arcade, an onsite restaurant and lots of opportunities to make new friends.
Our getaway to the Catamaran Resort began recently when we checked into a gorgeous bay front suite overlooking San Diego’s stunning Mission Bay. Spanning 438 square feet, the room was highlighted by a large patio that is literally steps from the sandy beach.
The suite also boasted a big private bedroom with two queen beds and a large TV, a separate living area with another big TV, a pullout sofa, a wet bar with a refrigerator and a dining area. A large and spacious bathroom with a walk-in shower completed the room’s layout.
Beyond the suite, the rest of the property is just as impressive. Featuring 310 rooms, the sprawling Polynesian-themed resort is surrounded by palm trees, waterfalls, koi ponds, exotic birds and lush vegetation.
The hotel is located in San Diego’s Pacific Beach community and sits on the shores of Mission Bay, a large, artificial saltwater bay created for recreational activities such as wakeboarding, jet skiing, sailing, camping, cycling, jogging, roller skating, skateboarding and sunbathing.
One of my family’s favorite spots at the resort was Mission Bay’s sandy beach located steps from our patio. Here the kids made sand castles and played in the water while we relaxed in lawn chairs, soaking rays and admiring the coastline.
The beach was also where we rented a 21-ft Hurricane powerboat and cruised around the bay for a fun-filled hour. We rented the boat from Action Sports Rentals ( www.actionsportrentals.com/catamaran-resort-hotel-spa/ ), which has a booth on the dock in front of the Catamaran Resort.
It was an epic voyage. After learning how to control the vessel and finding the proper speed for the bay, we cruised into the morning sun. Along the way we waved to boaters and paddle boarders, sailed beneath an old bridge and past expensive condos and luxury hotels. The boat was easy to maneuver, had lots of seating and shade and was a perfect family outing for the afternoon.
After mooring the boat, we went to the resort’s large pool area where my kids played in the water and made new friends. Secluded behind tall palm trees, the pool is a tropical oasis with lots of seating, a Jacuzzi and a bar. Each day, the pool area offered a free kids’ program for hotel guests.
Next to the pool is also a video arcade, full of free games for kids and their parents. My son and I had a great time there, shooting basketballs, racing cars and playing foosball.
From the pool, we walked along a lush, tropical path to Oceana Coastal Kitchen, the resort’s on-site signature restaurant. Boasting beachfront dining with spectacular views of Mission Bay, Oceana serves creative, coastal California dishes with an eclectic flare. The restaurant, led by executive chef Paul Arias, won Tripadvisor’s 2023 Travelers’ Choice “Best of the Best” Restaurants for Everyday Eats, ranking 10 th best in the U.S.
Our dinner at Oceana began with a delicious bowl of New England style clam chowder with bacon, red bliss potato, thyme, cream and steamed little neck clams on top and mixed in. I am a major chowder fan and this bowl had the perfect amount of creaminess along with a perfect clam to potato ratio, making it one of the best I’ve had.
The restaurant also specializes in sushi and when we sampled the Oceana House Roll we fell in love. The rolls are exquisitely filled with eel, tempura shrimp, crab, Nori, avocado and unagi sauce. This dish is a work of culinary art.
We completed our dinner at Oceana with a succulent grilled prime hanger steak with smoked potato puree, watercress, cippolini and macadamia chimichurri; and a tasty Hawaiian style pad Thai with stir fried vegetables, tofu, pineapple, chili, macadamia nuts, cilantro and soy.
After dinner we strolled along the beach and watched the sun fall into Mission Bay.
The next morning we had potatoes and eggs, and a plate of chilaquiles for breakfast at Oceana, and then rented a surrey bike from Action Sports Rentals. We then pedaled around the bay. Along the way we saw sailboarders fling over waves and then stopped at a park for the kids to play.
Back at the resort we watched a demonstration featuring the hotel’s exotic parrots including vibrant macaws, beautiful cockatoos and a lilac-crowned amazon. Some of the birds talk and can say things like “hi,” “hello” and “goodbye.” The parrots are available to view outside daily between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Pacific time, depending on the weather.
We concluded the day at the resort’s Sunset Luau. Held on the shores of Mission Bay, the luaus are a festive celebration of Polynesian food, music and dances perfect for family and friends. The party begins with a lei with real flowers and a delicious Mai Tai. This was followed by an all-you-can-eat buffet with Hawaiian-inspired rice and salads and various succulent meats including pork, chicken and fish.
Local luau group Pride of Polynesia provided authentic island music and dance featuring hula and fiery torch dancers. Kids also got a chance to hula dance and participate in activities at the Kids Corner where they made flowered leis, festive crafts, colored and played with stick-on tattoos.

Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa
Immerse Yourself in an Exotic Locale Like No Other in San Diego
For some travelers, a hotel is just a place to rest their heads at night. For others, it’s part of the overall experience. If you’re one of the latter people, Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa is the place for you.
But rather than give you just the basics of the hotel, I want to go beyond that and show you just why the Catamaran is like visiting a faraway tropical island without the need to leave San Diego.
I also want to give you ideas for fun and exciting things to do, both at the hotel and near the hotel, that you don’t usually hear about when looking online.
Be sure to also read the comparison article I’ve written - The Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa vs The Dana on Mission Bay - to help you decide whether the Catamaran is the right hotel for you or if The Dana on Mission Bay, an incredible hotel in its own right, might just be a better fit.
A Tropical Hideaway
Designed to look and feel just like a tropical oasis inside and out, this Mission Beach hotel is situated on prime real estate, with Mission Bay on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other. Within its gates and walls, I always feel as if I’m in a tropical hideaway.
When I get the chance to stay, I love to walk around and explore. The Catamaran boasts an authentic Polynesian theme with elegant palm trees rising in its courtyard, tiki torches and lush vegetation surrounding its borders.
A Traditional Healing Experience
The Catamaran Spa is like an oasis within an oasis. Inspired by Asian and South Pacific healing traditions, patrons are privy to innovative treatments they are unlikely unable to find anywhere else.
The menu of services includes full-body exfoliation treatments, massage, water therapy and rituals. Many treatments utilize rejuvenating marine and plant-based products, which only adds to the experience.
In addition to relaxation services, the spa also offers an array of beauty treatments. Guests can stop in for hair care, nail services, makeup application and more before a night out in nearby Downtown San Diego .
The spa also offers a bayfront fitness center that boasts updated cardio and strength training equipment. As a bonus, guests have access to the scheduled yoga classes on the lawn.
Why You Should Consider the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa
The Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa is listed as one of our top picks for the Best Family-friendly Hotels in San Diego .
Let me share with you the top four reasons it’s on that list and why I love this hotel so much.
Exotic Wildlife and Scenery
The grounds are stunning with ponds of koi fish, ducks, and other animals. I’m always mesmerized by the large koi pond that goes into the lobby and flows under the glass window to the outside by one of the restaurants.
I also love to talk with the exotic birds who like to converse with guests when I’m relaxing by the poolside or in the hot tub.
Make it an Easy Beach Day
The Catamaran is right on Mission Bay at Sail Bay and just across the street from the beach. There you can surf, play in the waves, sunbathe or just people watch.
San Diego is known for its year-round sunny warm weather and a day at the beach will be simple when you stay at the Catamaran.
Prime Location
You won’t have to spend a minute of extra time getting to restaurants, bars and stores in both Mission Beach and Pacific Beach as all are easily walkable.
Great Restaurants At and Near the Hotel
The Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa is a favorite dining destination of locals and visitors alike, as it offers an inviting atmosphere for all occasions. You can also easily go offsite for a meal.
Onsite Dining Options
Oceana Coastal Kitchen, the resort’s signature restaurant, serves up California-inspired cuisine for lunch and dinner while patrons take in the view of the captivating Mission Bay. At Moray’s, diners can let their hair down and relax while enjoying beer, cocktails and a casual meal over tiki lights or around a firepit.
Nearby Dining
I love La Playa Taco Shop which is along Mission Blvd., maybe a 2 minute walk from the hotel. San Diego has a few taco shops but I honestly think this is the best taco shop in San Diego!
If you are looking for a place to sit and eat with good food and grab a beer, Amplified Kitchen + Beer Garden is a great choice. For this one, you’re looking at a walk of 5 minutes or less.
Todd embraces his inner seafaring spirit in this tour of Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa right on Mission Bay in Mission Beach. This 4-star Polynesian themed resort exudes relaxation from its spa treatments to its koi ponds and its bayfront location.

Nearby Things to Do at and Around The Catamaran
Here are some of my favorite activities to do while at the Catamaran and around the neighborhood.
Things to Do at the Hotel
There are countless activities you can do at the Catamaran, without even having to leave the hotel!
Let’s look at a few things to do directly at or through the hotel.
Bahia Belle Cruises
During the day and early evening hours, the Bahia Belle Mississippi-style boat offers family-hour and cocktails to guests of the Catamaran. After 9:30, it transforms into a nightclub for those 21 and older.
The hotel boasts an arcade, where families can engage in friendly-competition while playing classic games.
Gather for the resort’s bird show featuring colorful and talking macaws and other exotic birds.
The Catamaran’s private beach along the Mission Bay is equipped with first-come-first-served beach chairs and umbrellas on which guests can relax and take in the views.
Pool and Whirlpool
While children make a splash in a palm-tree surrounded pool, adults can unwind in the adjacent whirlpool.
Open-Air Yoga
Master the downward dog and tree poses while taking in the sun and stunning views of Mission Bay.
Movies on the Beach
On Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, The Catamaran puts on a family-friendly film along the beach. Grab a beach chair and some popcorn and settle in.
Kids Keiki Club
Children and guests have a chance to show off their creative side when they join the Keiki Club on Saturdays for Hawaiian-inspired arts and crafts.
Watersports
The resort has two on-property watersport rental companies that offer equipment for a variety of outdoor activities, including biking, paddle boarding, sailing and kayaking.
Things to Do Near the Hotel
The Catamaran is close to many of San Diego’s most popular attractions, including Cabrillo National Monument , SeaWorld San Diego , Old Town San Diego , the Embarcadero , Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo .
However, many guests of the bayside resort find that the nearby outdoor activities hold their interest for the duration of their vacations.
Let’s dive a little deeper into a few of my favorites!
Have a Beach Day
Mission Beach and Pacific Beach are right there when you stay at the Catamaran but there are about 75 more beautiful beaches up and down the coast if you want to explore!
The beach and bay offer a wealth of things to do, including paddle boarding , surfing , cruising, biking, touring on Segways, swimming , scuba diving and more.
Visit the San Diego Zoo
The San Diego Zoo is a world-class attraction I think will be well worth a visit. Home to 100’s of animals, it’s just a short distance away in Balboa Park.
Pre-purchase a Go City San Diego pass using discount code GVSD5OFF for maximum savings.
Go to SeaWorld San Diego
If I can be honest, I recently visited SeaWorld San Diego for the first time in more than 10 years, and I was really impressed! There are countless sea life exhibits, rides for kids and thrill seekers and the food was actually quite good as well.
Best of all, SeaWorld San Diego is also part of the Go City San Diego pass so discounted admission is as easy as grabbing a pass before you arrive.
Spend an Afternoon Exploring Balboa Park
I want to give you one more recommendation of what to do when you stay at the Catamaran and that is visit Balboa Park. There are trails for walking and more than a dozen museums for you to visit as well.
The zoo is there of course and it’s just a great place to take the family for some fresh air, a stroll and perhaps even a picnic!

Bottom Line
Although the dated Polynesian-style decor and interiors could use an update, this three-pearl resort in San Diego's Pacific Beach area is a great family-friendly choice with an array of features and direct beach access. Set on pretty grounds filled with lush greenery, koi ponds, and exotic birds, the hotel offers two on-site eateries, a lovely outdoor pool and hot tub, as well as a spa, salon, and fitness center. There's even a beautiful classic boat that offers sunset cruises and family activities, transforming into a nightclub scene in the evenings. The 310 guest rooms are bland and could use a refresh, but they're spacious and outfitted with modern comforts like flat-screen TVs, Keurig machines, iHome docks, and free Wi-Fi, while studios and suites add kitchenettes and dining/living space. For nicer and more modern rooms, check out the similarly priced and also beachfront Paradise Point Resort and Spa in Mission Bay.
Hotel & Amenities Photos
Spa Jacuzzi

Fitness Center
Pets allowed, oyster hotel review, mid-range family-friendly resort with dated polynesian-style decor, but pretty green grounds.
This beachfront hotel sits on pretty green grounds full of palm trees, lush plants, trim lawns, ponds with colorful fish, and even exotic birds flying about. The greenery creeps inside as well -- a rock waterfall and koi pond in the lobby is skirted in ferns, small palms, and tropical greenery sprouting here and there beneath the sloped roof. Though dated, it somehow works, bringing a kitschy dose of the natural world inside. The place has a Polynesian vibe, with bamboo and rattan furniture, wooden art hanging on the walls, and teak wood elements. Though many spaces could use an update -- like the drab carpeting and beige walls in the lobby and hallways -- the resort is a fine choice with a great location and a good selection of amenities, garnering terrific ratings and reviews from guests.
Across the street from the beach on the shores of Mission Bay, close to restaurants and shops
The hotel is situated across the road from a beach in San Diego’s Pacific Beach community. The immediate area is residential, with private homes and vacation rentals, but there are a variety of shops and restaurants within walking distance. Nearby attractions include Belmont Park (five-minute drive), SeaWorld San Diego (10-minute drive), San Diego Zoo (17-minute drive), Cabrillo National Monument, (22-minute drive), and Legoland California (35-minute drive). Downtown San Diego is about a 15-minute drive from here, while the historic Gaslamp Quarter is 20 minutes away. San Diego International Airport is about a 20-minute drive from the hotel, or around an hour by public transportation. The nearest bus stop is a two-minute walk away.
Spacious but dated rooms, suites, and studios with private balconies/patios; some have kitchenettes
Rooms are plain and simple, and though they could use an update, they're clean and offer a decent set of amenities. Decor is dated, with beige walls and carpets, wooden furniture, and beds topped with striped bed runners. They're spacious, though, and have large glass doors that open onto private balconies or patios with views over the surroundings or onto the hotel's green grounds. Studios and suites have kitchenettes with four-burner stoves, ovens, microwaves, sinks, toasters, and full fridges, as well as living/dining space with blue couches, coffee tables, and chairs flanking small round tables. Standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, Keurig coffeemakers, mini-fridges (full fridges in units with kitchenettes), iHome docks, laptop safes, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms are equally bland decor-wise and quite small. They're outfitted with shower/tub combos, toiletries, and hairdryers; bathrobes can be found in the closets.
Two dining options, lovely pool and hot tub, direct beach access, spa and fitness facilities, and plenty of meeting rooms
The hotel offers two on-site dining options: Oceana Coastal Kitchen is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, serving Californian fare in an waterfront setting (outdoor seating overlooks the beach), while Moray's is the more casual option serving light bites and drinks, with a fun outdoor space with fire pits and tiki torches. A Sunday Champagne brunch is also available, as is room service. For an alternative dining/drinking experience, guests can hop onto the Bahia Belle, the hotel's classic sternwheeler that offers family hour and cocktail cruises on Mission Bay. Drinks, snacks, and family activities are available during the evening, while at night, there is music and dancing, and on the weekends live DJs.
The hotel's lovely, green grounds include a pretty outdoor pool and hot tub surrounded by loungers and tall palm trees, plus there's a poolside bar and grill. The resort has direct access to a beach, where guests can use the free beach chairs and umbrellas. Various water sport rentals and lessons are available here, including surfing, sailing, stand-up paddleboarding, and kayaking. Bike and Segway rentals are also available.
The hotel has a spa that offers massages, body wraps, hydrotherapy treatments, facials, and other treatments. There's also a salon that offers hair styling, makeup, and nail services. The fitness room offers a handful of cardio and strength training machines as well as weights. Family-friendly facilities include a game room with a good selection of arcade games. Other facilities include 14 on-site meeting rooms available for various events, as well as a gift shop stocked with souvenirs, snacks, and drinks. There is a fee for both self-parking and valet.

My colleagues and I stayed at this resort for a conference and were very satisfied with our experience. We had breakfast every morning at the Oceana costal kitchen and had the pleasure of being served by Jeanelle and the rest of the incredible wait staff. Looking forward to coming back soon!

Exotic species
Exotic species flags differentiate locally introduced species from native species.
Naturalized : Exotic population is self-sustaining, breeding in the wild, persisting for many years, and not maintained through ongoing releases (including vagrants from Naturalized populations). These count in official eBird totals and, where applicable, have been accepted by regional bird records committee(s).
Provisional : Either: 1) member of exotic population that is breeding in the wild, self-propagating, and has persisted for multiple years, but not yet Naturalized; 2) rarity of uncertain provenance, with natural vagrancy or captive provenance both considered plausible. When applicable, eBird generally defers to bird records committees for records formally considered to be of "uncertain provenance". Provisional species count in official eBird totals.
Escapee : Exotic species known or suspected to be escaped or released, including those that have bred but don't yet fulfill the criteria for Provisional. Escapee exotics do not count in official eBird totals.
