BRITANNIA Royal Sailing Yacht

The most successful racing sailboat of all time

Royal yacht Britannia   was built for the Queen Victoria's son Edward, Prince of Wales, successor to the throne. She was launched on 20 April 1893 and joined a fleet of first class cutters that was growing fast as others followed the royal lead. In a highly competitive fleet, sailboat  Britannia  soon set about achieving the race results which would eventually establish her as the most successful racing yacht of all time.

By the end of her first year's racing, the sailboat   Britannia  had scored thirty-three wins from forty-three starts. In her second season, she won all seven races for the first class yachts on the  French Riviera , and then beat the 1893 America's Cup defender  Vigilant .

In 1895 she won 38 of 50 regattas. It is the record which no other yacht in history ever able to repeat.

In 1897, Britannia   beat the yacht Meteor of the Chancellor of Germany and won the Challenger Cup.

In 1921, the new owner, King George V, refitted Britannia   out for racing, and for the first few seasons replicated the stunning earlier successes. However, as the years progressed Britannia   became increasingly unable to hold its own against the more modern rigged J-class yachts.

After George V’s death in 1936, sailboat Britannia   was towed out into the English Channel and sunk in deep water off the Isle of Wight, in accordance with his dying wishes. Britannia ' s 51-foot (16 m) long gaff, the king’s chair, tiller, some mast hoops, blocks and rigging, anchor chain and clock are preserved in the Sir Max Aitken Museum in Cowes High Street and the remains of her spinnaker boom are at  Carisbrooke Castle , also on the Isle of Wight. The spinnaker boom was given for use as a flag pole on the keep.

BRITANNIA Racing Yacht

In 1921, King George V triggered the revival of the Big Class by announcing that he would refit Britannia for racing. Although Britannia was the oldest yacht in the circuit, regular updates to her rig made her one of the most successful racers throughout the 1920s.

The Big Class revival initiated by Britannia was one of the key reasons for the immergence of the J-class yachts. Five were launched in 1930: Enterprise, Shamrock V, Weetamoe, Whirlwind, and Yankee. Never one to resist a sailing challenge, King George V commissioned a major refit for Britannia in 1931 that gave her a Bermudan rig. The legendary Charles E Nicholson designed the tallest wooden mast the world has ever seen. The new rejuvenated Britannia went on to add 15 more firsts to her record during her final years, giving her a grand final total of 231 wins out of 635 races. Her last hurrah came in the summer of 1935 as she raced against the American J Class Yankee. After George V’s death in January 1936, it was announced that in accordance with his wishes, Britannia would be stripped of her spars and fittings and scuttled. Britannia was towed out into the English Channel and sunk in deep water off the Isle of Wight.

1893 Royal Yacht Britannia Scaled Sailboat Model

His Majesty’s Yacht Britannia was a gaff-rigged cutter built in 1893 for Commodore Albert Edward, Prince of Wales. It served him and his son, King George V, a long racing career.     After the Prince of Wales’ nephew Kaiser Wilhelm II acquired the racing cutter Thistle in 1891, her Scottish designer George Lennox Watson received a commission from Edward VII for a sailing yacht in 1892. He designed His Royal Highness’ Yacht Britannia to the “Length And Sail Area Rule” as a First Class cutter and had her built alongside his America’s Cup challenger Valkyrie II at the D & W Henderson Yard on the River Clyde. She was launched on April 20th, 1893, a week ahead of Valkyrie II.     By the end of her first year’s racing, the Britannia had scored thirty-three wins from forty-three starts. In her second season, she won all seven races for the big class yachts on the French Riviera, and then beat the 1893 America’s Cup defender Vigilant in home waters.     King George V’s dying wish was for his beloved yacht to follow him to the grave. On 10 July 1936, after the Britannia had been stripped of her spars and fittings, her hull was towed out to St Catherine Deep near the Isle of Wight, and she was sunk by HMS Winchester.

Model Ship HM Royal Yacht Britannia

HMY Britannia was built at the shipyard of John Brown & Co. Ltd in Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire, UK, being launched by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 16 April 1953 and commissioned on 11 January 1954.

The ship was designed with three masts, a 133-foot (41 m) foremast, a 139-foot (42 m) mainmast, and a 118-foot (36 m) mizzenmast. The top 20 feet (6.1 m) of the foremast and mainmast were hinged, to allow the ship to pass under bridges.

Britannia was designed to be converted into a hospital ship in time of war, although this capability was never used. In the event of nuclear war it was intended that the Queen would take refuge aboard Britannia along the North West coast of Scotland

The crew of Royal Yachtsmen were volunteers from the general service of the Royal Navy. Officers were appointed for up to two years, while the "yachtsmen" were drafted as volunteers and after 365 days' service could be admitted to "The Permanent Royal Yacht Service" (upon volunteering and subsequently being accepted) as Royal Yachtsmen and served until they chose to leave the Royal Yacht Service or were dismissed for medical or disciplinary reasons. As a result, some served for 20 years or more.

The ship also carried a platoon of Royal Marines when members of the Royal Family were on board.

Britannia sailed on her maiden voyage from Portsmouth to Grand Harbour, Malta, departing 14 April and arriving 22 April 1954. She carried Princess Anne and Prince Charles to Malta in order for them to meet the Queen and Prince Philip in Tobruk at the end of the royal couple's Commonwealth Tour. The Queen and Prince Philip embarked on Britannia for the first time in Tobruk on 1 May 1954.

On 20 July 1959, Britannia sailed the newly opened Saint Lawrence Seaway en route to Chicago, where she docked, making the Queen the first Canadian monarch to visit the city. U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower was aboard Britannia for part of this cruise; Presidents Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton also were later welcomed aboard the Yacht. Charles and Diana, the Prince and Princess of Wales, took their honeymoon cruise aboard Britannia in 1981. The ship also evacuated over 1,000 refugees from the civil war in Aden in 1986.

According to journalist Andrew Marr in his book The Real Elizabeth (2012), at least as of 1965, the British government planned for the Royal Yacht to serve as the Queen's refuge in the event of nuclear war. Peter Hennessy wrote, "It was her floating nuclear bunker... it would lurk in the sea lochs on the north-west coast of Scotland; the mountains would shield it from the Soviet radar and at night it would go quietly from one sea loch to another."

During her career as Royal Yacht Britannia conveyed the Queen, other members of the Royal Family, and various dignitaries on 696 foreign visits and 272 visits in British waters. In this time Britannia steamed 1,087,623 nautical miles (2,014,278 km)

In 1997, John Major's Conservative government committed itself to replacing the Royal Yacht if re-elected, while the Labour Party declined to disclose its plans for the vessel. Following Labour's victory on 1 May 1997 it was announced that the vessel would be retired and no replacement would be built. The Conservative government argued that the cost of the vessel was justified by its role in foreign policy and promoting British interests abroad, particularly through conferences held by British Invisibles. When canceling the replacement of the vessel, the new Labour government argued that the expenditure could not be justified given the other pressures on the defense budget (from which it would be funded and maintained). Proposals for the construction of a new royal yacht, perhaps financed through a loan or by the Sovereign's own funds, have since made little headway.

The Royal Yacht's last foreign mission was to convey the last governor of Hong Kong, Chris Patten (now The Lord Patten of Barnes), and the Prince of Wales away from Hong Kong after its handover to the People's Republic of China on 1 July 1997. Britannia was decommissioned on 11 December 1997.

There was some controversy over the siting of the ship, with some arguing that she would be better moored on the Clyde, where she was built, than in Edinburgh, with which the yacht had few links. However, her positioning in Leith coincided with a redevelopment of the harbour area, and the advent of Scottish devolution.

The Queen was reported to have wept at the decommissioning ceremony, which she attended along with most of the senior members of the Royal Family.

Listed as part of the National Historic Fleet, Core Collection, Britannia is now permanently moored as a five-star visitor attraction in the historic Port of Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland, and is cared for by the Royal Yacht Britannia Trust, a registered Scottish charity.

Entrance to the yacht is via the Ocean Terminal development, and over 250,000 people visit Britannia every year. She is also one of the UK's top evening events venues. On 18 May 2006, the Swiss-born Hollywood actress and first Bond girl, Ursula Andress, celebrated her 70th birthday on board the Royal Yacht. On 29 July 2011, a cocktail party was held on board the Britannia for Queen Elizabeth's granddaughter Zara Phillips and her husband Mike Tindall to celebrate their upcoming wedding; the yacht had been hired for the occasion.

A retired Rolls-Royce Phantom V state car, owned by the royal family in the 1960s, is on display in the purpose-built garage aboard Britannia. Other highlights of the tour of the five decks that are open to the public include the Queen's Bedroom (behind a glass wall), and the State Dining Room. The Royal Deck Tea Room opened in 2009.

The 1936 racing yacht Bloodhound, once owned by the Queen, is now berthed alongside Britannia. Bloodhound was one of the most successful ocean-racing yachts ever built and was also the yacht on which both the Prince of Wales and Princess Royal learned to sail. The Royal Yacht Britannia Trust bought Bloodhound in early 2010 and she is the centerpiece of an exhibition focusing on the Royal Family's passion for sailing. Visitors can view Bloodhound from a specially built pontoon when the racing yacht is in port.

Britannia in Numbers

After years of design and development, INEOS Britannia prepares to battle it out for supremacy on the waves in the 37th America’s Cup – and become the first British team to win the world’s oldest, international sporting trophy.

INEOS Britannia’s weapon of choice for the battle in Barcelona is Britannia, their 75ft, 6.2 tonne AC75 foiling race boat which was designed and developed in partnership with Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team.

britannia sailboat model

So what exactly goes into an America’s Cup race boat? We outline Britannia’s key stats in numbers below.

120,000 Individual parts

50,000 Construction hours

35,000 Design hours

30,000 Data channels

700 Sensors and channels

100 Designers

33 On-board cameras

16 Athletes

8 Athletes on-board at any one time:

4 Cyclors

4 Flight Controllers/Trimmers

2 Helms

All to win 1 America’s Cup

Each AC75 has two Helmsmen. One sits port side; the other, starboard. Communication is key because their vision is limited due to the huge, deck-sweeping sails. They steer the boat and have multiple functions on their steering wheels where they can trim the pitch, cant and angle of the boat at the touch of a button.

The two Flight Controller/Trimmers keep the boat up in flight on the foils and achieve target speeds through trimming the sails effectively. They work in conjunction with the helmsmen and can also assist in tactical decisions.

The Cyclors’ job is to churn out watts faster than the other teams. They must maintain up to 500+ watts on the static bikes, which are fixed inside the 75ft carbon-fibre hull, for spells of 20 minutes and nail sprints at up to 1,800 watts. In doing so, they provide the hydraulic power to trim the sails and make the boat go faster. One Cyclor has likened the job to cycling and competing in a rugby match at the same time.

Players spawn throughout a barricaded apartment within the inner city--with Congreve Rockets flying overhead and bombarding the city. Upon spawning in, players will descend down the stairs and exit into the nearby alley--which contains several civilian corpses, a set of wooden boards attached to a rope, and a number of Zombies . Players must proceed through the alleyway to reach a locked gate leading into a flooded basement. Players must destroy the lock, either by using a melee weapon or a firearm, after which players will proceed into the basement of a bar. Players must ascend to the second floor of the Bar, where they will come across a number of storage shelves and barrels, along with an opening in the wall for raising cargo with a rope. Players must interact with one of the barrel's and turn it over, then roll it to the nearby cargo lift, where it can then be tied to the rope and pushed to the ground in order to lift up several wooden boards, allowing players to collect them and build a bridge across to the nearby apartment building. Players must then make their way through several burning buildings and across partially destroyed rooftops-- if there are less than 10 players currently alive at this point, players will be required to go through an alternative route which will allow deceased players to respawn early --before they eventually come across a burning attic that is impassable.

Players must extinguish the fire by collecting a set of water buckets and dousing the fire with them. Players who do not have the Water Bucket equipped can find wooden buckets and a set of water pumps by descending a rope to the ground. Players can then ascend the ropes and approach the fire in the attic to douse it with water. After extinguishing the attic fire, players will make their way across two more attic's before entering a large residential building. Players will drop down into the building through a broken ceiling tile, and proceed down the stairs--where they will drop down through a collapsed stairwell into the first floor of the building. Players must hold out in this room for roughly a minute, at which point players will be able to proceed into the main town square. Upon making their way through the town square, Players will come across a broken wooden bridge; the players must shoot a Gunpowder barrel located across the bridge and next to an abandoned merchant vessel. When this barrel is detonated, it will light the vessel on fire and push the merchant vessel down the canal, until the ship reaches the bridge. Players must quickly jump onto the flaming merchant vessel, and then onto the other side of the bridge before the vessel passes through the gap fully. Players will then come across a small pier, where a Danish gunboat which is moored. Players must enter the gunboat and untie it from the pier so that it can begin moving.

Players will have to clear their path while defending the boat, with a naval gun positioned at the front of the gunboat being used to clear a blockage. Players must make use of the Naval gun, as well as several Swivel guns positioned on each side of the boat in order to defend the gunboat--as Zombies attempt to climb onto the gunboat. Players will then have to clear the collapsed mast of the merchant vessel using the Naval Gun before proceeding forwards. Players will continue downstream until they encounter a large Royal Navy Brig-Sloop which is enforcing a quarantine of the city. This vessel will begin firing upon the players after the players pass under the bridge--players must destroy the British vessel in order to breach the quarantine and escape Copenhagen. Players can destroy the vessel by using the Naval Gun in order to strike the vessel with Round Shot --players can additionally kill Sailors onboard the ship to disable several Cannons . Once the vessel has been destroyed, the players will successfully escape.

Following the arrival of two investigative ships which returned from Vardøhus Fortress , and a subsequent outbreak of the Blight, the city of Copenhagen has been placed under a full quarantine by the Royal Navy, with the undead having reached the city, the Royal Navy is intent on keeping any survivors from getting out in order to avoid the spread of the Blight. The Royal Navy performs an extensive bombardment of the city utilizing Congreve Rockets, leaving the city completely ablaze. You and your team, stragglers from the Danish Army and National Guard, make an effort to evacuate from the city and escape.

June 5th, 1815 Internationale Situation in Europe continues to deteroiate. Communication lines with the states of the Rhineland and Germany as a whole remain nonexistant at this time.

Fall of Konigsberg Residents and the king of Prussia find themselves capitaless. Retrieved sources can confirm the extraction of King Frederick and the royal family. Their speculated destination is London. This fall marks the second capital of Prussia to be lost, only two years ago did the fall of Berlin occur, only months after the Battle and Fall of Leipzig refugees have arrived in droves to the Slesvig line. No information has surfaced regarding the fate of the nation, but with the knowledge previously gathered we may speculate the nation joins as one of the many to capitulate from the scurge of the Sygdom. Just months ago the forces of Prussia pledged troops to the cause in northwestern France, now the streets of Berlin and Konigsberg ring earily silent with only the moans of the dead to accompany it.

In Brussels this weekend a new agreement was forged, much to seeining disconnect of Bonaparte. Forces of the United Kingdom are to mobilize and provide aid to the France in return of the formation of a new country encompassing much of Dutch territories held by the French Empire. These territories are to unite as a Sovereign nation known as the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Although such an agreement leaves an English pawn on France's doorstep, many believe the English's involvement are necessary for the survival of France.

United Kingdom relations continue to sour. Although perceived peace continues to reign the English and their pettiness knows no bounds. At this time they expect Danish aid and troops to be provided in the Anglo offensive of the Sygdom. King Frederick has stated no such aid shall arrive. Our men are stretched thin at the Danevirke, our navy remains in your hands, now terrorized our citizens, and brought on an attack in peace. No such aid will be provided. A quote from the English Diplomat Augustus Foster. "All nations of Europe are to provide sacrifice for the liberation of Europe. Denmark must provide sacrifice to rid this scourge!"

French Empire has finalized agreements to deploy forces to the Danevirke. In response the king is to allow the French to stage positions on the north sea, in order to reinforce or perhaps extract those under siege in Hamburg. Danish forces defend the city aswell so such common interest has meritted this measure.

Danevirke Fortifications remain standing, only two breaches were reported as of the last issue. Large groups of Sygdom sufferers are congregated south of the town of Slesvig. Residents have been urged to prepare to evacuate but as of printing their is believed to be no known cases of breaches or symptoms of the Sygdom. The Danewerk 2 wall which fell only days ago continues to be overrun. Only now are we beginning to face the reality of loss of life. A full list of those believed to have fell can be found on page 5.

Northern Recovery Kirkenes, Norge, June 7th. Account of investigation of and recovery of Vardohus.

Our journey began in the naval yard. We bid fare-well to Copenhagen. We arrived at the small island of Vardo on the 3rd of April. Communication with the fortress and island had been lost since Christmas of 1812. On the island we found not a living soul. Complete desolation. The long decayed bodies of few were recovered, by then frozen and thawed multiple times. Most peculiar of all was a body frozen in the ice of the sea. Its eyes were pealed open, those eyes moved, the limbs were frozen over, but the eyes moved. Long dried blood stained many walls. A train of military equipment lined the ground from the fort to the docks. What events transpired here are un-

June 30th, 1815 More Vardo ships arrive at Copenhagen

Two boats involved in the recovery and investigation of Vardohus F. arrived a quarter past seven this Friday evening. Onboard the ship is vital evidence in peacing the events that transpired at the ill-fated fortress. Along with the first bodies recovered. The soldier's remains are to be laid to rest in Assistens cemetary. Ceremonies will be held respectively on the 5th of July. Surgeons, doctors, physicians, and so called sygdom experts attempt to bring light to the mystery on Vardo. Two such theories we have the pleasure of displaying.

Dr Johann Berling I myself have viewed the recordings and findings of those far up north. Many are quick to point their fingers to the sygdom, but I assure you, by no means could at is have traveled to such remoteness. No case of the Sngdom could transmitt itself accross oceans. This poor air theory is total non-sense, as if we are living through the bubonic plague! Our knowledge has greatly expanded, no plague travels from air!

Karl Dahl They deny the sygdom has touched our soil. As if the silk of our red and white flag hasn't been stained by the scourge of Europe. Forbid you fall into a man in denial. Look at the blood that stains the walls, no other disease, plague, scurge, does such! This disease has reached Norge, ravaged and tore through Vardo, and now we drag back a ship full of the dead who fell to such Sygdom. Might I remind you such a disease that simply raises those already deceased. If this ship is to arrive in harbor it will spend the end of our fatherland. I believe the smell of the dead alone awakens those buried away in the cemetaries. This is the end of Denmark. I urge citizens to deny entry to this ship. The dead aboard, they'll kill us all regardless if they're not wandering. This disease reached Vardo, devastated her, and now will feast upon Copenhagen. Bless you all best of luck to you.

Internationale The current affairs effective of Thursday June 29th

Franco-Anglo stand against the Sygdom was conducted on the 18th of this month. The little communcation received from such paints a daunting and hopeless picture. So forth we are to provide you with a French account of the event. Louise Blane was extracted from the Dutch coasts by a fishing vessel of Danish origin. He was returned to France, but beforehand he provided the captain, a formal navy officer with a firsthand account. This is the the account.

The dead do not sleep, they are relentless, you can outmarch them, but they will make the ground while you rest. Their hunger does not stop them. They are beasts, cannibals, monsters, all words fall pail to describe. We were positioned near Brussels. We were to hold a mound of ground. Mont Saint Jean. Before long we were ordered to march toward the farmhouse of Hougoumont, but such orders we cancelled. Such a forsaken fate was avoided. Later we would come to learn all souls positioned at these farms would meet their fates. We instead were positioned near the English Line. Rain poured the evening of Saturday. The roads turned to mud quickly, and the fields of grass even worse. Our first encounter with the dead was on the evening of the 17th, a day earlier than any dragoons reported. The first assault was held with little death, however their numbers did not dwindle, but rather they continued to grow. By nine o'clock our line had retreated many times. Men were lost to the dead every hour. One would simply lose his balance in the mud, and quite quickly the dead would gather around him and feast upon him. His screams would ring, but no soul would make forth to save him for it would be in vain. By what must've been midnight the English, such cowards abandoned our forces. The full brunt of the dead they had held back struck us and we were forced to retreat. Farms such as Hougoumont provided us our only life line. The men there had assembled fires to burn the dead like moths to a light. The manuever worked and provided us cover to retreat, however as I neared them screams could be heard from behind their walls. The unusual fire behind those walls soon followed suit, and what must've been two o'clock the fire extinguished. The English cowards left us all to perish. Foul play was suspected in our ranks, some thought they routed us to bring the dead to Paris. Others believe they were attempting to swarm the Imperial Garde.

July 7th, 1815 Citizens!

After all of our means our defence has become insufficient. If now are to have eyes on this print our city is at war with the sygdom. The military is appropriately organizing and providing a defence and counter force against the undead hordes. The unpredictable consequences of the sygdom will be dealt with. If you are a male fit and prepared for combat make your way to your nearest national guard rallying point. There you shall be armed and join together with forces to liberate Copenhagen. If you are not of national guard material, remain inside barricade your home. Do not seek outside contact, avoid cemetaries and other burial sites. Remain quiet. Ration food. The military and national guard troops are coming for you. Do not be discouraged. This print has been pre-arranged for such an event. It is to be distributed evenly throughout the city.

It is obliged that all of you maintain a state of law. It is your duty as citizens to maintain order and respect of fellow citizen's property. I should warn everyone that violation of this duty is a crime that could have dire consequences.

Headquarters in Copenhagen, the 7th July 1815.

Save us all.
