WHAT WE SAY

The Oyster 100 by Dubois is designed with the specification, features and classification of very much larger yachts  - and provides a sophisticated entry into superyacht ownership.  By contrast, other 100-foot alternatives are simply longer versions of their 60 – 70 foot counterparts. They are built in the same way, are usually of a light displacement and structure, and can give a ride to match – lively with poor load carrying capabilities and little internal volume. Compare their displacement figures with the Oyster 100, which offers significantly more internal volume, comfort and stability. Comparing the worked materials used in construction reveals a second revealing statistic. Worked materials are loosely defined as structural items that are in some way crafted by specialists such as the hull and deck, interior joinery, engine, generators, indeed, anything that has to be crafted or built rather than just dead weight like the keel.   The Oyster 100 by Dubois is a small ship by comparison! The standard accommodation layout offers three staterooms aft and two crew cabins forward. The two family/guest staterooms have two large single beds, which are fitted on slide rails which can be pushed together to form a large double bed. A third fold down bed is also available. A raised saloon offers a panoramic view and leads forward and down to a more intimate lounge and separate dining area. Forward of the main living area is the crew mess, galley and two crew cabins.

Nautor´s know-how and experience in building both racing and cruising yachts have been incorporated into the Swan 100 to create a sailing yacht with full carbon fibre construction and lines that speak of performance.

The Swan 100’s hull lines, designed by Germán Frers, are an evolution on previous Swan Maxis. The bow is straight with a low bowsprit for easy sail handling and safe anchoring and the low coach roof is set behind the mast for a balanced yet aggressive look with a long, clean foredeck area. The opening transom forms a combined beach club and toys storage area that is a focus point of on board lifestyle.

Exterior Designer

Micheletti+partners.

Lucio Micheletti and his studio Micheletti + Partners have created a light, easy to use and safe deck setup that features a large and well-protected guest cockpit and a harmonious combination of wooden decking and white hull areas balanced by glazed surfaces to let light into the interior.

The interior designer

Interiors show how Swan updates and tailors its offerings to every new hull model. While several layouts are in development, the first Swan 100 will have a full beam en suite owners cabin fore, two further guest cabins and a VIP cabin with its own entrance just off the light-filled companionway.

A galley adjacent to the saloon is designed for owners who enjoy cooking and a lobby space off the galley can also be used for batteries in case a hybrid propulsion system is chosen. Crew quarters aft are spacious so that crew can live comfortably on board for the duration of an entire charter season.

Timeless Classic

The yacht is fitted with natural materials such as linen, cotton and leather in shades of white, naturally light colours, natural brown and putty tones for leather. These blend with light durmast wood, giving the yacht a sophisticated feel and bringing warm, sunny countries to mind.

TraditionalNavy

Linens and cottons in navy blue and shaded white blend with various shades of tobacco in fabric and leather. There is also the traditional wood used for sailing, namely natural teak, taking those on board back to the long-established seafaring concept of historical sailing clubs.

Natural fabrics such as linen and cotton are featured in different shades of wine, Cowes red and the fundamental shaded white. There is also “drunken” leather and Canaletto walnut, bringing to mind the Admiral’s Cup and Fastnet Race triumphs of sports sailing.

Spirit of Finland

A typical modern Swan interior featuring an under-stated Nordic approach with use of hand-crafted timbers and seaworthy detailing. Light European oak and walnut floorboards are paired with carefully selected performance fabrics in light natural colours and earthy leather accents for a soft touch. A timeless, light yacht interior from the land of the midnight sun.

The all-new Sunseeker 100 Yacht is the epitome of a luxury yacht. Powered by MTU 12V 2000 M96X as standard or MTU 16V 2000 M96L engines as an option, the 100 Yacht accommodates up to twelve guests and five crew in complete luxury, reaching speeds of up to 30 knots.

A striking Owner Stateroom forward with a private bow terrace, sunbathing hideaways, a breathtaking single-level exterior deck from flybridge to foredeck, a beautifully proportioned open-plan interior and generous ‘Beach Club’, just a few of her magnificent features. 

The revolutionary Sunseeker ‘Beach Club’ provides an exceptional area to relax at water level. The tender garage can accommodate a Williams 460 Sportjet and GTX255 jet ski, with plentiful stowage for SeaBobs, diving equipment and paddleboards. The innovative X-TEND™ system offers several seating arrangements, facing aft in its lowered position or, at the flick of a switch, forward at cockpit level.

The vast flybridge on board the 100 Yacht flows seamlessly into the foredeck with uninterrupted walk-around access on both sides. The foredeck provides a social space with two separate seating arrangements plus an oversized sunpad. The essential raised pilot house, central to this yacht’s innovative design, incorporates a glazed sliding door aft, allowing uninterrupted views forward from the flybridge.  

Its unique main deck, penthouse-style saloon and luxurious staterooms offer a new-found design direction and material selection providing elegant interiors to enchant any owner. The layering of textural elements and the mix of furnishings and fabrics feels timeless with a modern twist that exudes simplicity and sophistication. Floor-to-ceiling glazing floods the generous saloon with natural daylight, complemented by sliding doors to starboard, helping to bring the outdoors in. A stunning feature wall forward of the dining room showcases exposed and seemingly floating stair treads leading to the wheelhouse above on the port side and lower deck access to starboard. The large, fully equipped galley forward is concealed behind a feature bulkhead, and offers plentiful space and direct side deck access for crew.

The unique main deck layout includes the Owner's Stateroom forward for even greater flexibility and freedom on board. This full-beam stateroom offers a large lobby entrance, walk-in wardrobe with feature shelving, an office and generous en suite. Bathed in natural light courtesy of expansive panoramic glazing, owners can access a first-in-class bow terrace for ultimate privacy through a cleverly sculptured, fully-glazed sliding door forward.

The yacht can be specified as a four or five cabin boat, ideal for the charter market. In either case, the twin amidship cabins can be fitted with Pullman berths for added flexibility. The crew cabin is also worthy of mention, featuring a Captain’s cabin with en suite, two twins each with en suite, a highly specified crew mess.

For many yacht owners, the solution to finding more space aboard for friends and family is summed up by that immortal line by Chief Brody in Jaws : “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”

Until now, bigger has typically meant longer. But that’s quickly changing as more and more builders are creating interior volume by going wider and taller. For disrupter builder Wally Yachts and its polarizing new Wallywhy 150—which refers to its internal volume rather than the boat’s length—the quirky design is said to deliver 50 percent more space than more traditional 78-footers.

Other builders like Princess have been in the game since 2021. Its X95 first appeared several years ago, effectively throwing down the gauntlet as a way forward for sub-100-foot yachts to supersize both interior and exterior volumes.

Since then, many other builders of small superyachts have jumped on board, with designs that typically have somewhat bloated profiles, far-forward main suites, and open transoms—features all designed to maximize space but minimize length.

Here are 10 new yachts 100 feet and under that are breaking the mold in an attempt to dominate the nautical space race.

It’s no wonder that disrupter Italian builder Wally—now part of the Ferretti Group—calls its latest head-turner a “spaceship.” Claiming up to 50 percent more space than comparable 78-footers, the 150 (named after interior volume rather than length) has standout features like a main salon with over eight feet of headroom, and a beam of more than 22 feet. The pragmatic design includes a one-level main deck attached to an open rear cockpit that offers easy access to the water. Its most noteworthy feature is the rule-breaking, full-beam master suite tucked into the bow on the main deck. It has wraparound glass—stretching all the way around the bow—for panorama-like views from the main bedroom. Priced from about $6.7 million.

Lazzara UHV 87

Short for Ultra High Volume, this new Turkish-built pocket superyacht is a sistership to Lazzara’s UHV 100 and 125 models. The newest Lazzara boasts an impressive 2,153 square feet of interior space in its 87-foot length. Arguably, the boat is not pretty in a classic sense. The towering hull sides, blunt, plumb bow, and dark-tinted glass make it look more like a dinner cruiser than a mini-superyacht. But the interior space is astonishing, from the cavernous Sky Lounge, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, to the salon with a separate, chandelier-lit dining area and chef’s galley. With a fuel capacity of 3,000 gals, the twin 1,000 hp Volvo D13s deliver a top speed of 16 knots. The boat also has transatlantic range. Base price starts at about $10.9 million.

Sunseeker 100 Yacht

Movie nights under the stars should have a whole new appeal aboard UK builder Sunseeker’s brand-new 98-footer. Lie back on the yacht’s extra-wide foredeck sunpad and watch the latest blockbuster on a 140-inch screen with laser projection. Or, if you’re the lucky owner, stargaze from your private terrace tucked away in the bow, just steps from the full-beam main-deck master suite, with atrium-style glass sliding doors. One of the best innovations here is the wide, uninterrupted walkway around the entire top deck, which provides safe, easy access from the flybridge to the forward entertaining space. With its twin 2,600 hp V16 MTU diesels, top speed is an impressive 29 knots. Priced from about $10.5 million.

Azimut Grande 26M

For its brand-new Grande 26M compact superyacht, Italian builder Azimut has gone extra wide to create massive interior and exterior spaces. Spatial highlights include a full-width flybridge that’s almost 20 feet across and close to 40 feet long, and a foredeck entertaining area that seems more like an outdoor patio. The Alberto Mancini-styled go-fast cruiser is crammed with space-enhancing innovations, such as a teak-decked garage door that, at the touch of a button, hinges upwards to extend the rear cockpit by almost five feet. New ZF pod drives coupled to the yacht’s twin 1,650 hp MAN V12 diesels also save space. It is priced from about $6.2 million.

Princess X95

As we said during our 2021 tour of Britain’s Princess Yachts’ tri-deck X95 “When it comes to the polarizing, head-spinning design, there are no half-measures, no in-betweens. You either love it. Or loathe it.” But what those eye-popping lines hide is perhaps the most spacious 95-foot luxury cruiser in the category. Reckoned to be some 40 percent roomier than cruisers with the same length, the X95 has stretch-out accommodations for up to 10 in five cabins and living spaces that rival most apartments. The flybridge covers almost the entire length of the yacht. The 100 is also fast, with twin 1,990 hp MAN V12s delivering a top speed of 23 knots. Prices start at about $12 million.

Extra X96 Triplex

This broad-beamed 96-footer is from the Italian builder Extra Yachts, which is part of the Palumbo Superyachts Group. While it’s called the Triplex, there are actually four levels if you include the cozy upper sundeck with its outdoor kitchen, dining area, and oversized sunpads. The exterior comes courtesy of Italian designer Francesco Guida, while interiors are by Milan-based Hot Labs. Both teams have made the most of the yacht’s class-leading 25-foot beam. Notable features include a vast full-beam master on the main level and an upper salon dedicated entirely to dining, with a table for 10, an open chef’s galley, and an adjoining outdoor bar. Twin Volvo IPS1350s deliver a 16.5-knot top speed. Priced from $12 million.

In Italian, the word “navetta” translates to “little ship.” Which is a perfect description for Absolute’s new 75-foot fast cruiser. It’s an evolution of the strong-selling Navetta 73 but with nearly two feet of extra length. The yacht’s expansive interior volumes will remain the same, with features like a forward master stateroom on its own level that has a private entrance steps away from the main salon. The salon features floor-to-ceiling glass, with full views of the water, courtesy of open bulwarks. Twin 1,000 hp Volvo IPS1350 diesels deliver a top speed of 25 knots. Pricing starts at about $4 million.

Arcadia A96

Cross a spacious Miami high-rise penthouse with a Canyon Ranch spa and the result could be this new 96-foot superyacht from Italian builder Arcadia. Boasting a remarkable 4,300 square feet of total living space, there’s room for 12 guests and five crew. And the living spaces even expand, courtesy of fold-down terraces in the main salon and on the rear deck. But the yacht’s focus on wellness and healthy living sets it apart. That expansive, teak-decked foredeck, spanning over 500 square feet, is perfect for yoga sessions or meditation, while the cockpit and beach club offer another 1,000 square feet of social space. For extra peace and quiet at anchor, solar panels can provide up to nine hours of generator-free power.

Numarine 26XP Fast

Think of it as offering pace, with space. Turkish yard Numarine has been building its bold 85-foot 26XP explorer style mini-superyacht since 2018, but later this year, it will launch the U.S.-focused 26XP Fast. Instead of slow-churning 435 hp diesels and nine-knot cruising, it’s bolting-in a pair of mighty 1,800 hp MAN V12s and modifying the hull to deliver a top speed of 31 knots. What hasn’t changed is the XP’s cavernous interior and expensive deck space. Take the top-deck flybridge which, thanks to the yacht’s 21-foot beam and far-forward helm, spans over 700 square feet. That space will include a dining table for eight, a full outdoor kitchen, and more lounges than a Saint-Tropez beach bar. Prices start from $6.95 million.

The Sunseeker 100 Yacht is set to usher in what the British yard calls a “new era” in flybridge design. We jumped on board during its Cannes 2022 debut...

Aggressively styled, with an unbroken window line that seems to separate the superstructure from the hull, the new 100 Yacht’s potent three-dimensional aesthetic generates huge visual impact.

But what really sets the new Sunseeker 100 Yacht apart is not so much its style as its thought-provoking reinterpretation of the tri-deck layout.

By creating a full-beam walkaround upper level with easy fore-and-aft access to the foredeck lounge, the new Sunseeker’s flybridge is able to encompass almost the entire boat’s length.

It runs, obstruction-free, all the way from the main deck transom steps to the owner’s forward terrace, providing complete walkaround access from bow to stern.

It looks well equipped in terms of entertaining options too. In addition to the flybridge ’s central dinette, there’s plenty of space for an optional helm station, free-standing loungers, wet bar and Jacuzzi.

And the foredeck itself also offers two separate seating arrangements, as well as the option of a laser projector and a 140-inch cinema screen for lazy evenings at anchor. Back down on the main deck, the forward owner’s suite leverages the full scale of the yacht’s beam.

In addition to floor-to-ceiling windows on both sides, it also includes a sliding glass door that leads out onto the owner’s private foredeck terrace. And for everyone else, the lower deck provides lavish ensuite accommodation for up to eight guests.

The crew have their own space in the bow with separate access to the galley and three small ensuite cabins.

Other key features include a raised pilothouse with a glass aft bulkhead that allows guests an uninterrupted view forward from the flybridge, and a ‘penthouse style’ saloon with floor to ceiling windows formal dining for eight, an impressive aft lounging area to port, plus an optional sliding door to starboard.

The integration of fly deck and bow lounge is deeply impressive

And when you step out into the big aft cockpit, the recreational flexibility is equally well considered. While the floodable tender garage is large enough for a Williams 460 Sportjet, plus jetski and Seabobs, it can also be converted into a decadent Beach Club with built-in barbecue, rain shower and sunlougers, similar to the recently-launched Sunseeker 90 Ocean .

Available either with MTU 12V 2000 M96X engines or MTU 16V 2000 M96Ls, the Sunseeker 100 Yacht has an estimated top speed of around 29 knots.

The 100 Yacht will sneak in just below the 24m waterline length, ensuring it is classed as an RCD Category A leisure vessel rather than having to meet the more onerous regulations for a superyacht .

Update: The Sunseeker 100 Yacht will be getting its US debut at the 2023 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show .

Captain of boat that rescued Bayesian survivors details mega-yacht sinking ‘within two minutes’

The captain of a boat who helped rescue survivors from the Bayesian superyacht has recalled how the boat sank "in just two minutes" off the coast of Sicily on Monday, 19 August.

The vessel sank in a severe storm , with the bodies of five people recovered from the wreckage.

Tech tycoon Mike Lynch has been identified as one of the bodies recovered, along with Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judith Bloomer, lawyer Christopher Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo.

The boat’s chef Recaldo Thomas was confirmed dead on Monday,

"We couldn't see them anymore, they disappeared from the radar," captain Karsten Borner told Sky News of the moment the boat sank.

Horror CCTV shows doomed Bayesian superyacht engulfed by storm – as witness says it ‘vanished in 60 seconds’

HORRIFYING CCTV shows the moment the Bayesian superyacht was engulfed by the storm that would eventually sink it.

The new video shows the lights of the doomed vessel in the distance slowly disappear as it is swallowed by the heavy rain.

The new clip comes from the CCTV cameras just 200m from where the boat sank.

One witness said he looked at his cameras when he heard news of the sinking, according to Giornale Di Sicilia .

"In just sixty seconds - says the owner of the villa - you can see the ship disappear.

"Of about twenty cameras installed in the house, only one was not disturbed by the wind and rain. You can clearly see what is happening.

The  £14million luxury vessel capsized on Monday  after it was caught in a tornado off the coast of Porticello, Sicily.

The frantic hunt for six people still missing is into its second day.

It is believed there is a second video which has not been published that shows the boat sinking.

The clock is ticking with drivers trying to fight their way through blockages in the 50m deep wreck.

They have now opened a hole in the hull of the Bayesian to get in through another direction, Italian outlet  Il Messaggero  reports.

Furniture has made it impossible for the divers to move through the inside of the boat and reach the cabins.

As time runs out, the brave search and rescue workers only have 10 minutes working in the water at a time.

They are also using an underwater vehicle to help divers, as well as five patrol boats and one helicopter searching from above the water.

Vincenzo Zagarola, a spokesman for the coast guard, said they believe the missing people are still inside as the yacht sank in just a few minutes.

He said: “We think they are still inside the boat, that is our very hard idea. Our search and rescue activity by sea and air has gone on for around 36 hours. 

“Of course, we do not exclude that they are not inside the boat, but we know the boat sank quickly. 

“We suppose that the six people missing may not have had time to get out of the boat.”

Who is Mike Lynch?

ENTREPRENEUR Mike Lynch is still believed to be missing hours after a £14m luxury yacht capsized in a tornado off the coast of Sicily.

The tech tycoon, dubbed "Britain's Bill Gates", was one of the 22 people sailing onboard the £166,000 a week vessel, the Telegraph reported this afternoon.

Lynch, 59, sold Autonomy Corporation - a tech company for $11b to Hewlett-Packard in 2011.

He has also been involved in Invoke Capital and cybersecurity company Darktrace.

He was awarded an OBE for his services to enterprise in 2006.

Born in Ilford, Lynch had a firefighter father from County Cork and a nurse mother from County Tipperary.

Away from work, Mike is married to wife Angela Bacares and the pair have two children together.

In 2023, the Sunday Times rich list set the couple's value at £852m.

Just weeks ago, Lynch was acquitted of criminal charges by a jury in San Francisco after a 12-year legal battle over the $11bn sale of his firm, Autonomy, to Hewlett-Packard in 2011.

He was extradited to the US on fraud charges back in 2023 with a judge setting his bail at £79m.

US Marshsals took Lynch into custody at Heathrow, putting him in chains and bundling him on board a United Airlines flight.

However, he had a few things in his favour.

The nature of the case led to a boring and turgid trial, including painstaking parades of emails, reports and spreadsheets filled with jargon, leaving jurors glassy-eyed.

One was even dismissed because he repeatedly fell asleep.

Lynch argued that any questionable activity was entirely immaterial in the context of a thriving business bringing in hundreds of millions a year.

While his lawyers claimed the books were approved by outside accountants and that, by British standards, the deals in question were appropriately accounted for.

Lynch was used as the final witness and rather than going "right for the jugular", as his head lawyer Brian Heberlig said, the prosecutors simply "reviewed a chronology of documents, with no probing questions". The jury agreed.

Divers are still assessing the safety of the superyacht before they can enter and look for possible survivors.

Those on board said the  mast collapsed  in stormy weather causing glass to shatter everywhere and the boat to capsize.

The dead chef has tragically been named as Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan.

Pal Eli Fuller shared a heartbreaking tribute with the BBC saying Recaldo: "knew everybody and was friends with everybody.

"He'd always ask how you were doing, how your family was - he was always positive.

"Personality was very important in his job. The world's richest people want to hang out with someone social. He was sought after."

Four of the missing from the Bayesian yacht disaster are British and two are American.

They include businessman Mike Lynch, dubbed "Britain's Bill Gates" and his teenage daughter 18-year-old Hannah Lynch.

Her former school, Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith, west London, has released a statement.

It reads: "We are all incredibly shocked by the news that Hannah and her father are among those missing in this tragic incident and our thoughts are with their family and everyone involved as we await further updates."

Lynch's wife Angela Bacares, 57, was rescued with horrific injuries from walking across broken glass to get to safety.

International chairman of bank giant Morgan Stanley, Brit Jonathan Bloomer, 70, is also missing along with his wife Judy.

As is top New York lawyer Chris Morvillo, a solicitor at major firm Clifford Chance who worked for Mike Lynch, and his wife Neda.

Clifford Chance lawyer Ayla Ronald, 36, and her partner were among those rescued.

The Kiwi snapped the last picture taken from onboard the Bayesian, a beautiful orange sunset only hours before tragedy struck.

Ayla was there celebrating Lynch's acquittal from fraud charges after he won a US trial in June relating to the billion-pound sale of his business Autonomy.

Her father Lin said Ayla, 36, text him yesterday saying "there are deaths", the Telegraph reported.

Another New Zealander who survived the ship's sinking was the captain James Catfield, 51.

He told Italian media that they did not see the tornado coming.

Other survivors include South Africans Leah Randall and Katja Chicken who were both able to leave coastguard headquarters yesterday.

THE BAYESIAN superyacht was hosting a lavish party for 12 guests, with 10 crew also onboard.

After 15 people were rescued from the water on Monday, six people remain missing and one has been found dead.

Italian authorities said the man recovered near the yacht wreckage was the chef working onboard.

Four of the missing are British and two are American.

Mike Lynch, 59, and his daughter Hannah, 18, are among the four Brits lost at sea.

Everything you need to know about yacht stabilisers

Modern technology can remove as much as 90 per cent of the rolling motion of a yacht, greatly improving comfort and safety and even saving fuel - and technology is improving all the time. BOAT explores the options.

"It isn't motion itself that causes travel sickness," explains Ronnie Skuan, CEO of Norwegian stabiliser specialists, Sleipner . "You are fine moving in a straight line, but it is the acceleration and deceleration in between each change of direction that affects a person's balance. A yacht not only pitches and rolls in a seaway, but it also corkscrews, an uncomfortable motion known as yawing. What stabilisers do is largely cancel out the rolling motion, damping the yaw in the process. Any slight pitching motion that is left is usually well below the frequency that makes people ill, so they probably wouldn't even notice it. As a result, boating becomes a pleasure again."

Stabilisers must prove equally effective both underway or at anchor (known as 'zero-speed'). When underway, the water moving past the hull can be deflected up or down by powerful electric or hydraulic fins, providing an immediate counterforce to the rolling motion. When anchored or drifting, and with no water flow to harness, stabilisation becomes more of a challenge. As such, many yacht builders will fit a combination of technologies, such as fins and gyros, which work well together. Fins will kick back and forth to minimise a roll, while gyro stabilisers - big, powered examples of the spinning flywheel toys we probably all played with at school - will exert a counterforce on the hull as they try and stay upright. A large yacht could have several gyros fitted, interceptors, fins, or a mix of all of them.

"Stabilisation isn't just about comfort, it is also about safety," says Jonathan Ridley, associate professor of marine engineering at Solent University. "Combatting acceleration is very tiring for even the most experienced crews, as they are constantly expending energy to oppose the changing dynamics. Even sitting down requires effort to stay in one place. For the guests, being seasick is a miserable experience that can put them off boating for life. A steady ship also prevents damage to inventory from excessive movement. There are even fuel savings to be made from improved directional stability underway. As such, stabilisation is seen as a standard fit on most modern motor yachts above 25 metres, although is far less common in sailing yachts. Whilst self-contained gyros are still used at anchor, underway the press of sails and the long keels tend to have a powerful damping motion, although some sailing yachts will still carry a fin system for long passages under motor."

All the stabilisers we feature here are "active" units, meaning they have moving parts that "push back" against the sea. Most will operate with very little noise, another consideration if anchored peacefully at night. Although there are variants and technology is improving all the time, here are the five main types:

Mimicking the profile of a fish, an opposing pair (or two pairs on larger vessels) of pivoting fins is placed under the hull as close to midships as possible and fitted with powerful actuators. The fins respond to sensors that measure the roll of the vessel and react quickly, providing a force that is equal and opposite. They are shaped to offer minimal drag going forward, but maximum effect when moving from side to side.

Stabilising a yacht while it is motionless or at anchor requires a different type of fin motion. Today, most companies offer an at-rest solution as well - either by using the same fins in a different mode or by installing a second set of fins.

Sleipner has taken the concept further by giving the fins a swept upward curve, which makes the thrust far more effective at anchor. The shape also minimises 'fin walk' where the kicking movement gradually propels the yacht over its anchor. Some designs, such as those from Naiad Dynamics , also have a retractable inner blade that expands the surface area in rougher conditions.

In the past, most fin stabiliser systems were hydraulic, but nowadays there’s a growing trend among manufacturers to offer electric versions. CMC Marine was the first company to do this and it leads the market in supplying systems to all the major Italian shipbuilders.

Electric fin systems are well suited to installation in yachts that also have other electric-powered equipment and can run off the vessel’s house system, eliminating the need to accommodate hydraulic piping on board. They also create less noise than some older hydraulic systems, which is very desirable to boat owners.

PROS: Fins are very effective, quick acting, powerful and usually offering zero speed functions. Less space is needed with the latest units due to the compact size of motors and hydraulics.

CONS: Vulnerable to damage from submerged objects.

A relatively new technology compared to fins, gyro stabilisers spin a heavy metal flywheel at up to 17,000rpm and then use the gyro's desire to remain vertical to push back against the forces trying to tip it over. This proves very effective, especially at anchor. The rolling and yawing is instead turned into more of a bobbing motion, which is very easy to live with.

Gyros are usually delivered as a self-contained unit and can be installed wherever there is room, but ideally on strengthened bearers along the centreline. They operate almost silently, mainly because the flywheels are often spinning in a vacuum to minimise resistance and heat. Gyros come in a wide range of outputs, from the superyacht-sized Veem VG1405D to the Seakeeper 1, installed on a centre-console sportsboat. Gyros do require a considerable amount of space below, a steady power source and strong points to push against.

PROS: Very effective at anchor. Easy to install. Multiple units can work together. No need to place it on the centre line.

CONS: Not as effective as fins underway, but very useful in tenders, especially for sports fishing. Require a reasonable amount of space and provision of strong points.

ROTARY STABILISERS

Spin a cylinder in water or air, and you develop a low-pressure area on one side. This generates lift, known as the Magnus Effect, which can be harnessed to counteract a roll. Rotary stabilisers have proved effective both at anchor and underway as they can be articulated backwards and forwards. Skippers deploy them at 90 degrees at anchor for maximum leverage but angle them backward to reduce drag when cruising. The speed of the spin can be quickly altered to create different levels of lift depending on the conditions. Some types can be retracted into the hull to keep them safe and reduce drag to a minimum.

PROS: Relatively simple in operation. Quite easy to install. Fast acting. Good for tenders.

CONS. Some drag when deployed underway, so only effective for displacement vessels.

As actuator technology advances, the hydrodynamic wing is evolving fast. This is a melding of fins and trim tabs, so when underway, the wings behave just like those of an aircraft, presenting at right angles to the flow and twitching up and down to exert the necessary opposing forces. At anchor, they sweep backward and forward like giant paddles, generating the lift required to cancel out rolling. When not needed, they retract neatly into the hull.

PROS: Effective and stowable, so ideal for ice-class vessels wishing to minimise protrusions.

CONS: More complex than most systems. Needs modified space in the bilge area for the retracted wing and the actuators.

INTERCEPTORS AND TRIM TABS

Only effective for vessels underway, and particularly useful on faster yachts and tenders, interceptors and trim tabs are found on the transom and act on the very rear of the vessel. Interceptors are guillotine-type blades that drop vertically into the wake, whereas trim tabs are horizontal flaps. Both are usually motorised, and thanks to modern sensors and actuators, can react in a split second. The force they can exert cancels out a lot of the yawing movement underway.

PROS: Fast acting, effective and helpful in saving fuel by establishing correct trim when planing. Minimal internal space needed.

CONS: Only effective at speed.

Some companies, such as Humphree , make both fins and interceptors, such as this Lightning mode (below), complete with colour change underwater lights. The unit is intended for tenders up to about 14 metres.

FIXED FOIL 

Although technically not an 'active' stabiliser in the true sense, this is worth mentioning as there is a growing trend for large motor yachts to fit an underwater wing. The foil lifts the stern underway and can complement the fin system by keeping the yacht at the optimum angle of attack. Apart from saving fuel, another benefit is the reduction of turbulence in the wake, making the voyage a lot quieter, especially for guests relaxing near the stern. DMS also makes an articulating version, which gives the skipper more choice of trim and can compensate for different tank levels and other changes in loading.
