M5 (ex Mirabella V) restyled by Pendennis Shipyard

M5 's stern was remodeled at the  pendennis shipyard in falmouth, uk and completed her sail trials successful..

M5 was originally built in 2004 as Mirabella V . Until she is still the largest sloop with over 75 meters (length of the hull) and an almost 90 meters long mast.

Designed and manufactured by Carbo-Link with OYS making the fittings, the 34 new carbon fiber stays, and titanium fittings with built-in dynamic fiber optics have decreased the weight of the rig by 18 tons. The sail trials not only established the M5 ‘s potential speed but tested the new system and balance of the yacht under sail for the first time. During several hours on the water with challenging sea conditions, the remodeled boat performed well, reaching 17.7 knots in 18-23 knots of wind.

The project, due to be completed over the next month, has seen a collaboration between Pendennis and the original designer Ron Holland , to achieve the Owners idea of extending the stern by 3m which has created a new sleeker profile providing an impressive aft deck area. During the refit, Pendennis has completed extensive engineering works and the interiors have been redesigned by UK company Redman Whiteley Dixon .

Soon after the new Mega Dock extension opened at Charleston City Marina, a certain mega boat made its way to the Holy City and became a point of fascination along the Ashley River.

M5, the biggest single-masted sailboat in the world, docked at the Safe Harbor marina starting June 18. It finally departed June 28 and is headed to Newport, R.I., according to MarineTraffic.com . The Mega Dock, which opened this month, extends into the middle of the river where there’s enough depth for boats with big draughts.

The ship is owned by Rod Lewis, CEO of Texas-based Lewis Energy. He bought the superyacht in 2011 from the original owner, Joseph Vittoria, CEO of Avis.

Vittoria, who died in 2021, was a sailing enthusiast who had the British shipbuilding company Vosper Thornycroft (now called the VT Group) assemble the sailboat in 2003, based on a design by Ron Holland.

The M5 design allows it to achieve a hull speed of 14 knots, though it can go faster in certain conditions. Lewis got it going 22 knots once.

World's largest single-mast yacht docked in Charleston

Turning heads along the Ashley

The massive boat and its mast, which towered over the marina and buildings on the west side of peninsula, attracted much attention during its 10-day stay — both from land and water as well as on social media.

"The new Safe Harbor mega dock in Charleston SC welcomes it's largest visitor to date: the 246ft sailing yacht M5," Keen Eye Luxury Marketing posted on Instagram. "You literally can't miss it!"

"The mast is so tall! We can see it from our house and it's lit up at night like radio tower," another person posted on Instagram.

This also wasn't her first trip to Charleston — as Ashley Yachts "spied" her making her way to Charleston City Harbor six years ago and posted the arrival on Facebook.

Holy City return

Lewis, who renamed the sailboat, had her brought to Charleston in 2018 for consultations about remodeling the interior, and has since refurbished and refit the vessel. It has lots of living space, a big galley, two giant diesel engines, eight cabins for guests and eight more for crew.

The big headsail, called the genoa, is the largest of its kind in the world, measuring nearly 20,000 square feet. The M5 is equipped with two more forward sails, making it a “triple-headed sloop.”

Stored in the lazarette are a 29-foot tender, Laser sailboats, jet skis, ski boats, kayaks and three remote-controlled models of Mirabella V. A tiny seaplane sits strapped to her stern.

Marine Results, an international rigging and structural inspection company has just carried out service work on the masts of sailing yacht M5 and superyacht Salute – two of the world’s tallest masts.  Marine Results inspected the rig of fast cruising sloop Salute which has the world’s tallest aluminium mast at a towering 75 metres.  But even that measurement was dwarfed by the next project on the schedule, that of the giant 89 metres high rig belonging to the 75m yacht M5 (ex Mirabella) .  Sailing yacht M5 is not only the world’s largest sailing sloop but she has the world’s tallest carbon rig.

Marine Results personnel work on the gigantic M5 sailing yacht mast.

Marine Results personnel work on the gigantic M5 sailing yacht mast.

“We have worked extensively with both yachts since they were launched,” comments Jon Morris of Marine Results. “Following completion of the two most recent projects we reflected that we had just carried out work on the world’s two largest rigs in their particular construction category.  We are pretty proud of that achievement and the way that it illustrates our capabilities.”

In the case of the 56m Perini Navi yacht Salute, Marine Results carried out an extensive inspection after the team un-stepped the rig at the Perini Navi yard in La Spezia, where she was originally built.  Marine Results then worked with Perini’s mast division to complete the inspection on the mast and rigging systems. Marine Results specialises in a range of non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques to check for concealed stressing and damage.

The second of the two record breakers, the M5 yacht had her mast pulled out as part of a substantial one-year refit at Pendennis Shipyard in Cornwall.  Marine Results was called in to unstep the rig prior to an extensive modification programme which is expected to last until the end of 2012.

“Unstepping the rig was no small job,” said Morris. “The rig weighs a colossal 46 tonnes. To give you an idea of the size of the job, when we removed the boom vang, this alone was 9.5 metres long and weighed 900 kg.

“One of our strengths is our ability to deploy our teams around the world to carry out service work on dozens of the world’s most advanced racing and cruising superyachts,” concludes Jon Morris.  Marine Results is based in Hamble, England and La Ciotat, France .

If the AVS was 73 degrees with the ballasted board up and there were off centre line openings into the superstructure with weathertight doors, then we are looking at a near repeat of the “Mohawk” sinking (post 529) and in 148 years we have learned less than we thought we had. If that figure is correct we can see why Costantino is in attack dog mode. Let’s hope that figure is wrong. But is that AVS, if correct, for the departure condition or the arrival condition? Surely it must be for the arrival condition. If it is correct, it will be in the stability book, and that document will certainly be made public in the MAIB report if not before.

Using the formula - Tangent Angle of deck edge immersion = opposite( freeboard) divided by adjacent (half the beam) we have the following 2.5 freeboard -- 2.5/5.75 = 0.4348 = deck edge immersion 23.5º 3.0 freeboard -- 3.0 / 5.75 = 0.5217 = deck edge immersion 27.5º OK so there is about 1 foot or so of side deck so a bit more than the above before the sunken frd entertainment area starts to fill and not long after that that it is through the open wheelhouse door and soon thereafter heading down stairs. And then the free surface effect comes into play. Click to expand...

Were the crashes human errors? Of course they were. But at the same time people driving other sports cars from the competition were not submiting their Darwin award applications so often. And other cars did not get named the widowmaker. Same thing happened here. Did human error contribute to the tragedy. Most likely. But the bad design caused by the need to have the biggest dick(err mast) did so too. Would the same crew on a different yacht with better design taking exactly the same decisions sink the ship? Probably not. So every one has their own point of view. Surely there will be a lot of pointing fingers, especially in courtroom. And when a multimillion dollar bussiness will be against poor captain and crew, we already know whose version will win in court. For me the tragedy was caused by badly designed boat, even tho it followed all the standards. Click to expand...

Especially those not attached to facts here as that might be bad taste and interfere with investigators analysis. So far we have learned 1. that building from aluminium was unsafe, it should have been steel (though personally I would have thought something lighter than water might have been better given many steel vessels have sunk in the past). 2. Having a mast seems unsafe. Having a ketch rig might be safer, but only a bit. I don't see why they don't ban masts altogether (or at least take them down at night like I do with my optimist). 3. Too big is bad, too small is bad - we are going to have to research the safe boat size. I guess 72.56ft. 4. Naval architects are idiots, engineers are idiots, engineers are not idiots. 5. Everything in the world should always be designed from first principles. Whatever they are? So NAs should start with molecular theory and work up.
