Our Incredible Kosher Sailing Adventures

This is not a cruise where you will be waited on hand and foot…. rather it’s an active adventure when you can help the skipper and be a team-member when we anchor, moor, raise the sails, wash down the decks, fill the water tanks or make the cocktails for happy hour! You can take turns on watch when we are underway, learn about sails, navigation, the wind, tying knots and you can ask as many questions as you want.

Sailing is an amazing experience when you can get up close with nature…. you can choose how to split your time between being on the boat, in the water or on land. You can also choose how involved you want to be… sit back, relax and be pampered or help sail the boat and tie the ropes.

We want sailing to be more accessible to those who keep kosher and shabbat and we offer a range of kosher sailing trips in the Mediterranean, the Caribbean and the Seychelles which are personal, fun, educational and relaxing.

This summer we are going to be based in Athens, Greece from where we will set sail across the Saronic Gulf visiting town such as Epidavros, Poros, Hydra, Spetses and Porto Cheli. We’ll drop anchor in secluded bays and tie up in quaint towns to explore and relax.

Our home will be a gorgeous catamaran with 4 guest cabins, each with en-suite bathroom. Your skipper will have his own cabin and there is room for a chef and hostess if you select the ‘pampering’ option.

The itinerary is flexible and depends on your preferences.. spend your time swimming or paddle boarding, sitting reading and relaxing, or walking through towns and along trails.

The kitchen on the catamaran is kosher and we take turns to cook on board or opt for a private chef. Due to space limitations, we usually cook milky and vegetarian and try and get hold of fresh fish most days but there may be an option of meat as well. Read more about our kashrut policy here .

The catamarans we choose for kosher sailing usually have between 4 and 6 cabins with en-suite bathrooms for 8 to 12 people. You can come as a family, organize a group of friends or join one of our groups and make new friends from all over the world.

Our skipper will be happy to teach you about sailing and you will need to help raise the sails, lower the fenders, tie off the mooring lines or drop the anchor. You’ll have fun, learn and be a great help since the skipper can’t do everything himself! We’ll teach you about knots (both how to tie a knot and why speed is measured in knots), reefs, winches, compasses, latitudes, longitudes and more!

Dive, Snorkel and SUP

Jump off the boat in sparkling coves to snorkel and we can organize scuba diving even if you’ve never tried it before. Fins, snorkels and masks are on the boat for you to use and if we dive, we only use authorized and professional diving centers who keep the highest safety standards.

Most boats include a Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) so you can try your hand at balancing and paddling in crystal clear waters.

Hiking and touring

We have the freedom to drop anchor or moor anywhere we wish to allow you to climb a hill, tour a town, hire a bicycle or drink a beer in a local tavern. Tour guides can be organized and many of the coves or harbors where we tie up are peaceful and off the beaten track.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kosher Sailing

On the boat, how fast can a catamaran sail.

When there is no wind, or the wind is blowing in the wrong direction, we will be using the engines and usually travel at around 5 to 7 knots. When we are under sail, we are typically at anything between 4 and 10 knots depending on the conditions.

1 knot = 1.85 km/hour or 1.15 miles/hour

Will there be internet on board?

We have a wifi router on board that provides fast internet via the cell network. Most of the time, we are in range of a cellphone tower and will have great internet but sometimes the reception will be a little weaker so plan on staying in touch with home and news but don’t plan on zoom meetings or netflix!

How much room is there on the boat?

Although the layout of different catamarans are not all the same, in general they are from 12 to 18 meters long and 7 to 10 meters wide and are divided into a number of living areas:

• Each of the 2 hulls contains 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms which you access via stairs that go down from the indoor living area.
• The indoor living area includes a kitchen, a dining/sitting area and a pilot’s table which usually includes electronic instruments and communication equipment and a space to roll out charts.
• The outdoor area at the stern (back of the boat) includes a covered sitting area and dining area. It also includes the 2 platforms used to enter/exit the water or dinghy or to step onto the quay in port.
• The outdoor area at the bow (front of the boat) includes a seating area and trampolines which are the netting at the front of the boat between the 2 hulls.
• Going up a floor, the pilot’s station is where the captain pilots the boat and controls the sails and behind him/her or to the side there are usually lounging/sitting areas.

This 3 floor configuration offers ample space for everyone to find a quiet corner to watch the sunset or to get together for breakfast, dinner or evening drinks!

Most of the catamarans we use are equipped with:

• Air conditioning (not for use when under sail)
• Generator/Inverter for 200V power
• USB power connectors
• Water maker (desalinator)
• Nespresso coffee maker
• Gas oven and stove/hob
• Fridge and freezer

What do I need to take with?

Take as little as possible! On board, we dress very casually and shorts, T-shirts and swimwear are the norm and you might want a pair of jeans and nicer shirt for evenings in towns. Together with some underwear and a toothbrush… this is probably all you need!

Oh and there is no room to store suitcases on board, so try and put it all into a soft bag that will squash down after its been unpacked.

Will I get seasick?

No promises but this has rarely happened on our trips! A catamaran is inherently more stable than a monohull yacht and the motion that causes sea sickness is far less acute because of its stability. The two hulls act as a buffer, reducing the rocking motion and if the sails are up as well, the boat will be even more stable due to the lateral pressure of the wind. In addition, we monitor the weather, the wave heights and the wind and do our best not to go out if conditions are choppy to the extent they would cause sea sickness.

In the mornings, the sea is often flat and we motor along smooth water until the wind picks up for us to raise the sails as the day progresses.

Logistics & Booking

We are a group of more than 8 – 10 people. can we join.

Of course! We’d be delighted and will fill up multiple catamarans to make up a flotilla. Come along with a larger group of friends or family but keep in mind that we need to fill the rooms for it to work so 14 to 16 people (7 to 8 cabins) would be a perfect number!

Why is the minimum 7 days for a sailing holiday?

You will arrive at the catamaran in the afternoon and get settled in. We’ll then have an extensive briefing to explain about the basics of the boat and most importantly about safety on board. We may set sail that afternoon but it could only be the following morning  and since we stop from Friday midday to Sunday morning for shabbat, it means that 7 days are never enough. Sailing is not fast and we need a couple of days after Shabbat to get back to our starting point.

For example, lets say you arrive on a Tuesday, we start sailing on Wednesday morning and then travel over 3 days to reach our furthest point where we stop for Shabbat.. we then we need 2 days to get back to our base by the following Tuesday.

Where do I need to fly to?

We operate from bases which are mostly serviced by the budget airlines. In the case of our Greece trips, our base is the Alimos marina, approximately 40 mins drive from Athens.

How much will it cost?

The cost varies depending on whether you join us during the low season (May or October) or the high season (June – September). The price per person will include everything on the boat…. the charter cost, food and drink for the boat (but you’ll be cooking with us!), wifi, fuel, water and boat insurance. The only additional expenses you will incur will be those that you choose off the boat including:

• Tour guides
• Moped/off-road vehicle/car/bike hire
• Drink/food/coffees

You can expect the price to be in the range of EUR 2000 – EUR 4000 per person in a double room for a 7 day trip depending on dates and whether or not you opt for the private chef and hostess. Please be sure to fill in your details in the form below and when we have a better idea of your requirements, we will be able to give you a price.

Kashrut & Shabbat

I am not religious… is this for me.

Absolutely! There is nothing ‘religious’ about our trips other than 3 factors:

• The kitchen is kosher (milky)
• We tie up in a marina from Friday midday until Sunday morning
• We will cook before Shabbat and have shabbat meals together

Everyone is free to do as they wish inside their cabin on Shabbat. You are also free to go onshore and eat and drink whoever and wherever you wish and do not have to eat meals with us. We simply wish to make sure that the boat is ‘kosher’ and shabbat friendly for those who desire it.

What happens on Shabbat?

We make sure to tie up in a marina from Friday midday to Sunday morning. We’ll be connected up to shore power which means we can have air conditioning on the boat.. dinner will be hot but we will usually have a cold lunch. Everyone is invited to be together and eat meals together on shabbat but you are free to go off and wander around the town or do you own thing.

Lights are left on over shabbat where they are needed and the water system, although operated by pumps, is a delayed passive system which we can explain so you can decide if you wish to use them. Toilets are usually operated with a manual pump mechanism.

Should you feel more comfortable in a room off the boat for shabbat, you are welcome to go to a hotel or AirBNB nearby.

Who supervises the kashrut?

Due to space limitations, we only have milky and no meat on board. We also do not have a dedicated kashrut supervisor (Mashgiach). We kasher the kitchen and use our own dedicated dishes, pans and cutlery as necessary. We shop fresh ingredients and basics locally and take cheese and wine with us from Israel or buy local kosher products if available. We buy fish directly from fishermen or fish markets.

We all cook together on board and are our own kashrut supervisors although there is an optional chef who will cook for you during the trip.

About Us and Kosher Sailing

We are based in Israel and while we enjoy our wonderful beaches, we realized that we are missing out on all the Mediterranean has to offer. It touches our shores but is underused and underrated!

After qualifying as a skipper and sailing the seas around Israel, we cast our net wider and started chartering catamarans in the Mediterranean. This is a fantastic way of traveling within the framework of keeping kosher because the catamaran has its own kitchen yet can be taken to the most beautiful parts of the Med.

As the word started to spread and friends and family wanted to join us on our adventures, we decided to offer kosher sailing in the Med to a wider audience. We are a family business in Israel working with partners around the Mediterranean to bring an amazing and unforgettable sailing experience to the kosher world!

Kosher sailing in greece, italy, croatia or the seychelles, each itinerary is tailored to you. if a particular cove or town looks inviting, lets change the plans and go and check it out, kashrut on the boat.

The Galley (Kitchen) on a catamaran typically includes a 3 or 4 ring gas burner, a gas oven, stainless steel sink, fridge, freezer and sometimes a microwave and a nespresso coffee maker. When the boat is not being used by us, it may be used for other non-kosher charters so we have our own dishes, pans and cutlery which we use (milky) and completely clean and kasher the kitchen before starting to cook.

Ingredients

• Milk : Most cheeses are brought with us from Israel.. we are particularly fond of the Jacob’s Dairy in Kfar Ha’Roe! If available, we will buy local kosher cheese locally. We use local milk and butter.
• Fish : We purchase fish fresh from fishermen, fish markets or supermarkets or you are welcome to try and catch your own dinner.
• Bread : We either bake our own bread or we buy plain white bread such as baguettes if generally accepted and deemed to be kosher by Chabad and/or the local dati community.
• Dry Goods : Rice, pasta, lentils, soy sauce, olive oil, canola oil, sugar, tea, coffee, etc is all bought locally according to accepted guidelines.
• Alcohol : We offer kosher wines from Israel or Europe, local beer and we try and arrange enough spirits and juices to make some pretty impressive cocktails!

Supervision

We do not charter large yachts with tens of rooms nor do we run a large kitchen on a super-liner. Our boats are very small in comparison and our clientele are cost conscious. We therefore chose not to employ the services of a kashrut supervisor (mashgiach) for 2 key reasons:

• The extra staff member would significantly increase the daily running costs
• There is physically not enough room for the extra person on the boat which typically has 2 crew berths only.

Whilst we realize that for some, this might disappoint and not meet their kashrut standards, for most people our self-supervision (השגחה פרטית) is perfectly adequate. Furthermore, since the galley is an integral part of the living space (and not a separate floor or room), the workings of the kitchen are always on display and anyone is welcome to go and supervise (or even better.. to lend a hand!)

Meeting our clients dietary needs during the course of our sailing experience in San Blas is something we take good care of .

We acknowledge the necessity of guests to feel totally at ease not only with our catamaran and crew but also with the service provided and more importantly the small details that make life at sea a delightful experience specially while sailing in such a remote sailing grounds as the San Bla Islands.

Panama boasts an estimated Jewish population of between 12,000 and 14,000 , the largest in Central America, a community that has been around since the 1820s and recently has grown and solidified as an important segment of Panamanian society, therefore accompanying Kosher Cuisine for our private sailing charters in the Caribbean side of Panama are often requested .

The lounge is a pleasant space for relaxation with large panoramic windows and bar area perfect for our lecture and entertainment programs. On the large, spacious Sun deck you will find comfortable deck furniture. There is also a library which features board games, an outside bar with comfortable deck furniture, a fitness center and sauna. Satellite Internet is available throughout the ship via the WiFi connection.

Your Dining

The single sitting dining room offers the best of traditional Glatt Kosher Russian cuisine and international choices, accompanied by complementary wine and soft drinks. Every day delightful buffet meals are served in the restaurant all under the auspices of Master Kosher Chef Malcolm Green.

SeaDream Yacht Club is pleased to announce their partnership with Jon Greenseid, a nationally recognized kosher consultant. SeaDream is now prepared to accommodate Glatt-Kosher private charters under strict rabbinical supervision.

Realizing that market demand could be developed, SeaDream’s Executive Chef, Sudesh Kishore applied his culinary skill to kosher offerings. SeaDream has created a masterful menu with both traditional and contemporary Glatt-Kosher dishes.

SeaDream’s President, Bob Lepisto said “Research indicates the kosher industry continues to grow at an astounding rate. Parsifal III: Meet the charter star of Below Deck's sailing yacht spin-off

This week, producers have confirmed season five of hit reality TV show Below Deck Sailing Yacht will return to screens on 7 October for more crew drama and on-the-water antics. Set on the Balearic island of Ibiza, the series will again feature the 54-metre Perini Navi superyacht Parsifal III with Captain Glenn Shephard at the helm. In anticipation of the series' return, BOAT reflects on an interview with her owner Kim Vibe-Petersen , who unpacked the realities of filming a reality TV series on board his boat ahead of season three.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht is a spin-off series of the hit superyacht reality TV show Below Deck that follows the lives of the crew and guests across an eight-week charter season. For Danish owner Kim Vibe-Petersen, Parsifal III' s return is yet another opportunity to show off the yacht's charter credentials. 

Vibe-Petersen was personally approached by Below Deck producers in 2018 after they struggled to find a suitable sailing yacht. Parsifal III fitted the bill as she was already equipped for charter and a number of her existing crew were willing to take part in the show.

The Perini Navi sailing yacht first hit the water in 2005 and rose to instant fame scoring a number of prestigious accolades including a coveted Neptune at the World Superyacht Awards . On her launch, she also joined the ranks as one of the fast Perini Navi superyachts on the water with a top speed of 18 knots under full sail granted by two high-tech carbon masts, automated in-boom furling and a winged keel.

Vibe-Petersen admitted there were some yacht owners who didn’t want the names of their yachts connected with the drama-filled reality show, but he "didn’t have that concern." Although he had the option to change the yacht’s name for filming, he decided to keep it to maximise the charter appeal of  Parsifal III .

"It’s free advertising," he said. "The name of the yacht will come to people’s minds, especially to someone who has never chartered a yacht before. They will see that name and know the boat from the show."

Vibe-Petersen was also keen to secure a guaranteed packed charter schedule during low season. "I think there were a lot of boats that did not want to be chartered for the show but it's good money in the bank," he said.

While admitting he might not be the "specific audience targeted by the series," he said he has sat down to watch the first series, which took place in Corfu. Even in Vibe-Peterson’s home country of Denmark, the US show has gained a big following.

"This is the kind of show where they want to make a little drama," he added. "It’s not that wild on board a normal charter." The conveyor belt of colourful guests are chosen by the production team and given a "big discount" for appearing on the show.

Vibe-Petersen also explained the complicated logistics of filming Below Deck , each season of which features 16 charters filmed across a period of eight weeks. This means that two groups of guests separately charter the yacht in a single week. Meanwhile, the production team require a time period of at least a week to get  Parsifal III  rigged up and fit for filming. "There are 30 people on board each day with lots of wires and cameras – it’s a big, big operation."

Season one was filmed in Corfu, Greece, which posed a number of challenges for  Parsifal III as the sailing yacht was required to have a specific charter licence. "It’s pretty tough to get that," said Vibe-Petersen. "It’s not something we can do within a short amount of time. It can take 10 to 12 weeks to get a charter licence so it takes time."

For her second season, Parsifal III was filmed cruising Croatia's 3,600 miles of coastline. For season three, the show follows Parsifal III as she cruises around the Spanish island of Menorca, carrying a mix of new and old crew.

Season five of Below Deck Sailing Yacht will feature returning department heads chief stew Daisy Kelliher and first mate Gary King, while chef Cloyce Martin, chief engineer Davide Morosi, stews Diana Cruz and Danni Warren, and deckhands Keith Allen and Emma Crouch are amongst the new crew members.

Parsifal III is managed for charter by Camper & Nicholsons with a weekly charter rate starting from €245,000.

Exotica Charters Announces Availability of New Yacht Charter Locations Due To a Wide Adoption and Innovative Use of This Technology

The availability of yacht charters was long dependent upon available marinas that allow for resupply after every charter. As the average size of a crewed charter vessel increased from 45 feet to 90+ feet, they could hold much more supplies. Nowadays, there are only 2 items that need to be restocked frequently - fresh produce and water. Since most charter locations burst with fresh fruit and fish, only water needed to be solved.

myBVIcharter is the leading US yacht charter company offering a robust fleet of catamarans and motor yachts in the British Virgin Islands. The classic weekly itinerary sees all the yachts depart on Saturday in a counterclockwise direction towards Virgin Gorda and Anegada, looping on Tortola on the way back, with the last leg from Jost Van Dyke.

Depending on the day, yachts used to move like the “Spanish Armada”. As yachts started to adopt the water maker, they suddenly had more options to start from almost anywhere, as guests could be picked up on a tender. This means that travelers can start their charter on day 3, staying ahead of the main fleet while on the same itinerary.

In Greece, the effect is twofold as explained by Mo, the Charter Guru at myGreekcharter . Firstly, there are new ways to discover classic locations. Since the first yachts started allowing Santorini pickup/dropoff, other yachts chose to follow suit. Santorini does not have a marina, and the pickup with a tender was a game changer. The amount of water needed for 15 people made daily stocking impractical and the yachts chose to start and finish in Athens.

Secondly, new charter areas in Greece have become available. As new yachts continued to arrive, the Athens’ marinas were full around 2022. The new yachts needed to find new marinas. A fundamental question - “why do we need a marina?”, led to yachts operating in areas previously not touched by the crewed yachts - Sporades and Dodecanese islands.

As Daniel, the owner of DMA Yachting, explains, ”We’re seeing first 3-4 crewed yachts permanently stationed in the Sporades and 8-10 yachts in the Dodecanese. Previously, you had to charter from Athens and ideally take a 2-week charter. This is no longer the case - you can start almost anywhere.”

The situation with the motor yacht Bahamas is similar. The previously Nassau-centric model, where all yachts started in Nassau and went for a weekly “milk run” charter to the Exumas, is challenged. “People don’t want to charter in the same spot twice”, explains Mo. “With 2,400 Cays, why not start in Eleuthera or even Long Island? And if the charterer wants to start in Staniel Cay, why get there from Nassau? Start the charter there!”

The water maker is not a new technology. It’s been around for a long time. It’s the innovative use, wide adoption, and necessity to spend less or no time in the marina that made the yachts offered by myBVIcharter behave differently. 

According to Daniel, owner of the DMA Yachting group comprised of myBVIcharter, Exotic Charters, Bahamas Motor Yachts & myGreekcharter, the adoption of water makers skyrocketed from a humble 30% to a whopping 100% in the last five years. 

Due to over-tourism and overcrowding in mainstream locations, people seeking intimate retreats are becoming increasingly more interested in exotic spots like Thailand, Raja Ampat, Galapagos or Antarctica. A water maker onboard is the key technological change that made these new locations feasible.

Exotica Charters , a yacht charter specialist in emerging and remote locations owned by DMA Yachting, has also observed increasing deployment of water makers in its fleet. “We’re suddenly able to create completely new itineraries, as we can do a route ABCD instead of A to A. You can get picked up in B and dropped off at C a week later. We’re seeing multiweek charters covering huge distances, especially in the Med: Sardina/Corsica, France to Italy to Malta, Ionian to Turkey in Greece.”
