Vinson of Antarctica Pelagic 77

KM Yachtbuilders to build second Pelagic 77 sailing yacht

Related articles.

Dutch shipyard KM Yachtbuilders has announced that it will be building a second Pelagic 77 sailing yacht with construction scheduled to begin later this month.

The project is being built as a sistership for the same owner of the first Pelagic 77, Vinson of Antarctica , which was launched in 2021.

“ Vinson of Antarctica is a yacht we are very proud of and [we are] even prouder to build the second one,” said KM Yachtbuilders founder Eeuwe Kooi.

The yacht will be constructed in aluminium with the same dimensions as its sistership, measuring 23.5 metres LOA with a beam of 6.2 metres and two aluminium masts. Accommodations will be set aside for up to 12 guests in four cabins and naval architecture will be undertaken by Tony Castro .

“It is very rare that an owner of a custom yacht decides to build a sistership for himself. We are extremely pleased that he likes the design so much that he is happy to have a second one, albeit to operate in a different part of the world,” said Castro.

Other technical details remain sparse; however, the yard has revealed that the yacht will be constructed and designed for the purposes of Arctic cruising and research.

“The decision to build a sistership to the Vinson of Antarctica was based on the success of this design concept which over the first year of her life has supported four worthwhile projects, their content contributing to our educational arm for schools in Chile and Spain,” said Polar sailor Skip Novak, commercial director of Pelagic Expeditions.

Novak detailed that while Vinson of Antarctica will continue to be based in southern South America, the focus of the second Pelagic 77 will be the north pole.

“In the aftermath of our first project right out of the builder’s yard, supporting a German geological team on Svalbard in July of 2021, it was clear there is more work to be done in the northern hemisphere. Climate change science, film support and reportage need a vessel like Vinson. A platform of our Pelagic 77 concept is a perfect tool to achieve these endeavours.”

Delivery is slated for 2024.

A couple of years ago I was having a discussion with some other very, very old timers in the boating industry, talking about California and Arizona boat builders past and present. And then it started....a list! We've probably overlooked a few, but maybe you can help and add a name or two. I give the majority of the credit for this list to Roger Giles, once an employee of Nordskog Marine in Van Nuys and eventually the head guy in charge of purchasing for Sea Ray Boats, now retired. Anyway, did we miss anybody? I owned a Pioneer Boat.v Pioneer Boats was founded in Paso Robles, California by Steve Hall and made primarily jet boats. It was based at one time at 8120 El Camino Real, Atascadero, California. Pioneer (in Atascadero) went out of business in the mid eighties. The Pioneer molds and name were sold to a guy in northern California who continued to build boats for a few more years. It was registered for business on Friday, June 27, 1975 and was officially out of business on Thursday, October 18, 1990.

You guys are doing great -- I knew I could count on you! Keep them coming. Kinda makes you want to get in the boat business doesn't it.....or maybe not.

had his own molds . He did the design work and Joe's Tooling did the dirty work . Hi-Tech had a very advanced drag hydro design, that never got enough 'test and tune' to be a seller, he also had a few different 17's, 20's and 23's or 25's . You need to ask him directly, but WHY would Cole allow a former shop manager use his molds ? I think not . Funny how anyone could make a list like this without even looking at the NADA or BBFO (blue book for boats) Maybe ask Mr 'V-drive Video', (Jerry) he started a list like this years ago and it was pretty extensive .

Using NADA would be cheating....this is not an open book test -- more of a memory puzzler/challenge for those of us on Social Security!

Motor yachts

Motor yachts? Yes, motor yachts. We took our love of sailing and put it into a truly remarkable motor yacht. Built for comfort, from bow to stern, Bestevaer motor yachts are. unlike any motor yacht you’ve sailed before.

About our motor yachts

We’ve built 3 Bestevaer motor yachts until now. A 49, a 53 and a 63 footer. Though different in size, they all share the Bestevaer DNA. As designer Gerard Dijkstra puts it: “Pure finesse. A simple shape and a sharp bow. Beautiful lines. But still, a yacht that is extremely comfortable under all weather conditions. The Bestevaer is my definition of the perfect ship.’
