Mykonos yacht charters.

Boats moored at Mykonos marina

Mykonos yacht charters have attracted well-heeled guests time after time with the island's sugar-cubed villages combined with cosmopolitan allure. Mykonos' main attraction is undeniably its vibrant nightlife; amid its myriad seafront bars and clubs, partygoers dance till dawn under rose-gold skies. But this is not the island's only appeal.

Wander around the enchanting vividly-colored houses of Little Venice as the sun sets; savor a candlelit meal at one of its many fine-dining options (such as Nobu); and discover some of the magnificent bays such as Ornos . Of course, there are also a vast array of beaches to bronze on: from the iconic Paradise Beach  to the hip and happening Psarou or the more tranquil Agios Sostis .

Vouliagmeni Yacht Charters

Beautiful lake in Vouliagmeni

A Vouliagmeni yacht charter is highly exclusive, with the idyllic coastal town being a popular superyacht haven for vacations beginning or ending in Athens. Located 13 miles southeast of the capital, yacht charter guests can moor here with ease at its peaceful bay. It's an absolute must whilst you are here to take a dip in the emerald-hued waters of the lake, hugged by soaring cliffs and gently warmed by thermal springs. For the more adventurous, be sure to make the most of the bountiful underwater caves.

Santorini Yacht Charters

View of colorful houses in Oia, Greece

A Santorini yacht charter is a firm favorite amongst discerning travelers who fall in love with its endless, dramatic beauty at every turn. Dappled with whitewashed cottages and cerulean-hued domed churches tumbling down the hillsides of  Oia to and up to the capital of Firá , guests have no shortage of backdrops for sunset tipples or sights to gaze at. Visiting the world-famous Red beach in nearby Akrotiri village whilst you are here is also a must.

Santorini is also superbly located for cruising towards the crystalline shores of Magganari beach on Ios island: an ideal location for snorkeling or taking out the toys.

Five Reasons to Visit Santorini on a Luxury Yacht Charter

Hydra Yacht Charters

Crystal blue shores of old main port in Hydra, Greece

Jetsetters have long adored Hydra for yacht charters , largely owing to its heavenly seascapes. The sheltered island enthralls guests onshore, who feel as if they have stepped into a bygone era: no cars roam around, just donkeys who hobble around its picture-perfect, labyrinthine streets and harbor. Soaring escarpments set the scene for sun-drenched meals under a lingering sun, with seafood served so fresh that it's practically dripping straight from the water. Admire also the innumerable secret coves and bays to be found here, many of which can be explored on your tenders.

Milos Yacht Charters

Kleftiko Bay, Greece

The luminous, volcanic island of Milos and its fabulously turquoise bays are a superyacht favorite, yet remain largely undiscovered to the wider public. But why do the elite cruise towards its shores? For the staggeringly beautiful beaches (more than 70 of them, in fact) perfect for bringing out the water toys.

The spellbinding Kleftiko bay , the geothermal Paliochori beach, and the surreal charms of Sarakiniko beach  (with its moon-like surfaces flecked by countless caves) are popular spots here. Abound with ancient ruins, make sure you also pay a visit to the Catacombs of Milos near the village of Tripiti , and the achingly pretty hilltop Venetian Castle of Milos .

History and Culture

Greece's location at the confluence of the East and West, as well as its Roman and Ottoman occupations, have had a huge cultural and historical impact that can be still felt today in terms of cuisine and architecture.

Greeks are fiercely proud of their heritage and culture. Marvelous regional traditions permeate mainland Greece and the Greek islands, ranging from religion to music, language to food and even wine, making a Greek yacht charter a truly thrilling experience.

Types of Yacht Charters in Greece

Superyacht Irimari underway in Greek waters

Greece has a very diverse yacht charter market, so you can be sure to find the perfect yacht for you and your charter party. There’s a wide variety of motor yachts for charter , as well as sailing yachts and traditional Turkish gulets.

However, be aware that all yachts wishing to begin or end a yacht charter in Greece must be in possession of a valid Greek charter license. Speak to a  yacht charter broker for more information.

If you’re unsure about the type of yacht you’d like to charter, here are some things to consider first.

Motor Yacht Charters in Greece

Charter yacht at anchor in a quiet cove in greece

For those looking to rent a motor yacht  in Greece, you’ll find a wide range to choose from.

The most common type of motor yacht you can hire in Greece is a yacht with a planing hull. Stylish, sporty and speedy, they’re great for zipping between islands quickly and ensuring you get the most out of your itinerary. If you’re looking to spend most of your time on land or splashing in the sea, a yacht with a planing hull is the top choice for you.

You’ll also find a superb selection of displacement and semi-displacement superyachts at your disposal (pictured above). These are typically larger and more stable at anchor, with more onboard space for facilities and amenities such as gyms, movie theaters and wellness suites. They’re ideal if you’re chartering with a large group, particularly one that includes children.

Sailing Yacht Charters in Greece

Greece is a playground for sailing yacht rentals , with plenty of yachts available throughout summer. A combination of light winds, clear skies and plenty of anchorages create great sailing conditions across all the islands.

The most popular destinations for sailing charters are typically Corfu, Kefalonia , and the Sporades Islands . Other destinations are equally desirable, including the Cyclades and the Dodecanese islands - but be aware that these areas typically encounter more winds. This means it might be more challenging to drop anchor, and you will have to consider spending more nights in port.

Gulet Yacht Charters in Greece

Gulet yacht at anchor in Greece

A gulet is a traditionally Turkish-built sailing yacht made out of wood. They are usually two or three-masted and are typically much larger than your average sailing yacht.   Luxury gulet yacht charters  in Greece are very appealing alternatives to both sailing and motor yacht charter. While they usually rely on their motor underway, they are very fuel-efficient and don't require a lot of fuel to get from point A to point B. They have displacement hulls which make them very stable and seaworthy, and typically offer lots of volume and open-plan living spaces.

Greek gulet yachts also tend to be cheaper than other types of charter as they sometimes offer all-inclusive or semi-inclusive packages, meaning you don’t need to worry about additional expenses such as food and drink. They also normally include a standard number of cruising hours per day.  Plus, their crew are often local to the region that they cruise in, meaning they can double as tour guides and have a lot of expertise and valuable insight into the area.

But be aware- many gulets are Turkish-flagged, meaning they will need to hold a Greek charter license to start or finish a charter in Greece.

How Much Does it Cost to Charter a Yacht in Greece?

The price of a Greece yacht charter vacation varies depending on a number of factors, including the type of yacht, the age of the yacht, and the month in which you choose to charter.

  • A Greece motor yacht rental can range from $33,000 to $1.8m per week plus expenses
  • A sailing yacht charter in Greece averages from $27,200 to $559k weekly plus expenses

In Greece, VAT on a yacht charter is charged at 24% and is based on the value of the yacht. However, this figure can be reduced if the yacht meets specific criteria.

The three tax brackets are as follows;

  • VAT at full 24%: applies to charters that take place in Greek waters without exiting to non-EU or International waters (Staying within the six nautical miles limit)
  • VAT at 24%: with a deduction option for time spent outside of EU waters or in international waters.
  • Discounted at 50% (VAT 12%):for yachts that spend a minimum of 60 % of charter time/days outside of territorial waters. (Territorial waters are considered: six nautical miles from the mainland and six nautical miles from the territorial waters of an island). This also applies to yachts charters commencing outside EU territory and that remain outside for more than 60% of the chartered days and end their charter in Greece.

Greek Charter Licences Explained

When is the Best Time for Greek Yacht Charters?

Quiet cove in Greece

The best time for Greek yacht rentals is between July and August, but warm weather typically extends well into September and even May in certain destinations. The peak of the charter season is usually July, although August historically has the hottest temperatures.

Between June and August, you can expect highs of 85 - 90 degrees Fahrenheit (26 - 32 degrees Celsius) in Athens, with even hotter temperatures recorded further south.

Where Should I Begin My Greece Yacht Charter?

Aerial view of Piraeus, the busiest passenger port in Europe

By far the most common embarkation point for a  Greece yacht rental vacation is Athens . Around 90% of the Greek charter fleet has a homeport in Athens, and there are numerous luxury marinas that cater to superyachts.

However, for those looking to charter around the Ionian Islands in destinations like Corfu , Cephalonia and Zakynthos , you may wish to begin your charter closer to your desired destination.

It is possible to begin or end your charter elsewhere in Greece. However, you may have to consider the cost of repositioning as the fleet is mostly based out of Athens.

If you want to meet the yacht elsewhere – for example, Santorini, Mykonos –  you can expect to pay a hefty repositioning fee. It’s generally more economical to begin your Greek yacht charter in Athens and spend the day cruising to your desired start point, enjoying your yacht to the fullest, and soaking up the scenery as you travel underway.

Where to Find a Yacht Slip in Greece

Exploring secluded coves - luxury yacht charter vacation

Around the main yachting hubs of Greece, you’ll find plenty of marinas that cater to a variety of yachts of different sizes. However, be aware that Greece doesn’t have as many big marinas as destinations such as the South of France or Italy , and demand for slips can be very high in peak season.

  • Zea Marina:  located in Piraeus, Athens, which is the largest seaport in Greece and one of the largest harbors in all of Europe. It's a hive of activity, offering 670 slips up to 150m.
  • Athens Marina : revered marina, accommodating 130 slips measuring up to 130m. Provides plenty of amenities on land, including a helipad service.
  • Flisvos Marina: award-winning and perfect for starting and ending a charter. Located 6km from Athens city center, with a 303 slip capacity (up to 70m). Well-equipped facilities and high-end restaurants at your disposal when you dock here.
  • Kos Marina: close to the enchanting island's old harbor, this marina has a capacity for up to 250 slips with a maximum length of 80m. Provides an excellent array of facilities and dining options.
  • Rhodes Marina:  world-class marina complete with a stunning backdrop. Can accommodate a staggering 382 yachts with a maximum length of 120m.

Where to End a Greece Yacht Charter

Beginning or ending your yacht charter in Athens, one of the most exciting cities in the world, is a popular choice. Be sure to explore this historic destination in all its glory before you leave.

How to Book Your Yacht Charter in Greece

Planning your yacht charter with a Broker

Greece is one of the most popular charter destinations in the Mediterranean. Therefore, advanced booking (three to six months ahead) is absolutely essential in order to secure your dream yacht on your preferred dates in the perfect destination.

When it comes to Greece yacht rentals, many charterers are repeat clients; meaning they’ve already booked the yacht once, fallen in love with the yacht and its crew, and chosen to return again to explore a new destination. This means that competition for yachts is fierce and it’s even more crucial to kickstart the booking process early.

Don’t forget that your choice of yachts in Greece is comparatively smaller than Italy or the South of France since all yachts beginning or ending a charter yacht in Greece must have a Greek charter license.

That said, it is possible for a foreign-flagged yacht to charter in Greece so long as the charter begins and ends in international waters, such as Italy and Albania for yacht charters around the Ionian Islands or Turkey for charters around the Aegean islands.

Greece Yacht Charter Q&A

Most itineraries for yachts around Greece begin in Athens because around 90% of the charter fleet in Greece has a homeport in Athens. Therefore, the yachts are usually based in the country’s capital, and you will most likely have to pay a repositioning fee if you’d like to begin elsewhere in Greece.

A Greek yacht charter license is a special permit that allows yachts to begin and end a yacht charter in Greece. Not all yachts hold a Greek charter license, so you will need to speak to your charter broker for more information about starting and finishing a charter in Greek waters.

You could start a yacht charter in Mykonos, but you will most likely have to pay a hefty repositioning fee as most yachts have their homeport in Athens. To get the most out of your yacht charter, it’s usually best to begin in Athens and spend the night underway to reach Mykonos.

The most popular destinations for sailing vacations in Greece are the Ionian Islands. However, great sailing conditions exist across the country, and other popular hotspots include the Dodecanese Islands, the Sporades Islands and the Saronic Islands.

The standard Value Added Tax (VAT) is 24%, and it is calculated based on the value of the yacht. The VAT can be reduced in certain circumstances; read our guide above.

The Cyclades Islands of Santorini, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos are great for exploring on a luxury yacht charter during summer. The best times to visit are between June and September when you can expect long days and warm sea temperatures. The beach clubs of Mykonos will be in full swing, and the island of Santorini will be alive with activity.

“We had a great time in Greece”

We had a great time in Greece, the first three days we had constant 20-25knots of wind, so we were able to do a lot of sailing. The boat was also in good condition and everything in working order…the boat did however look a bit older than a 2018 mode…

Greece Yacht Charters

Greece is a country in Southeast Europe, which is located in the Balkans. The country is embossed in four seas: the Aegean Sea, the Ionian Sea, the Cretan Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea . Due to its advantageous location, Greece possesses one of the longest coastlines in the world. This outstanding feature makes the country an incredibly famous sailing destination. Beautiful golden beaches along the island, emerald transparent waters, pine forests in the mountains, and extremely pleasant weather will not leave any sailor indifferent. Deciding to charter a shining yacht, you make an investment in unforgettable memories and the desire to come back as a matter of course.

The reasons for which one must visit Greece are difficult to count as it has a lot to offer for everyone. Rich history, glorious past, impressive ancient buildings, delicious food and wine, an abundance of celebrations and festivals are waiting for you to explore the picturesque region. The pristine nature of Athens, Volos, Corfu, Kavala, and other Greek cities and perfect weather conditions create an ideal opportunity to rent a boat and melt into the pleasure.

Sailing Conditions in Greece

Being situated in Southeast Europe, Greece welcomes sailors from around the globe to feel all the benefits of the Mediterranean climate. Hot and dry summers with rare precipitation and clear skies provide a good opportunity for yacht rental without any fear of possible rains and extreme winds. The average temperature during the summer period never drops below 20 ºC even at night. It is impossible to miss such great weather and not to go far in the sea on your sailboat to enjoy the 30 ºC heat in the daytime. Greek winters are usually colder, especially in those areas that are close to mountains. But they are not lingering and not so cold to somehow disturb dedicated sailors. The sailing season usually starts in March and continues up to November, bringing different sailing conditions to the island.

Best Times for Vacation in Greece

Having an intention to make the most of your sailboat vacation in the breathtaking destination, it is necessary to get acquainted with the weather conditions of the desired period. As a rule, the peak season of sailing occurs in the summer months and up to the end of September . This time features extremely high air and water temperature and a huge number of sailors even in the remote marinas. By the way, Greek summers are an ideal time for those who are ready to forget about sleep and party the whole night. One of the most important things to consider is that in July, the northern wind Meltemi comes to the shore and creates many hazardous obstacles for sailing.

Spring and autumn wind speeds and summer conditions force you to choose this time period if you are looking for peace and quiet. There is no extreme heat and strong winds, as well as no abundance of people. You still can enjoy going bareboat without any unpleasant conditions and immerse yourself into the same active and loud festivals and celebrations.

Sailing Difficulty Level

Greece has already gained its high popularity as one of the world’s best sailing destinations . Because of its climate and location, the country represents great sailing options for beginners and professional sailors alike. The weather changes require sailors to explore the weather forecast beforehand to select the desired time for coming and know what to expect. The level of difficulty is mostly predetermined by the Meltemi wind of 6-8 force. Blowing from July to September may scary fresh sailors and even become a challenge for experienced professionals. If you are not highly skillful and just do not have enough confidence to manage the vessel by yourself, consider booking a boat in spring or autumn. The absence of powerful winds will not spoil your first sailing experience but contribute to positive impressions.

If you are still not ready to face the open water, 12 Knots is glad to provide you with the help of a qualified skipper and an opportunity to hire a crew . Being focused on the needs and desires of every sailor, we offer either a skipper to help to refresh the memories of handling a boat or a complete training process in our sailing school. Both options are delivered at their best quality and reasonable price.

Main Charter Bases

Greece is an incredibly important sailing destination for 12 Knots. Welcoming thousands of happy sailors every year, the country has a lot of well-equipped marinas and good mooring options. Depending on the desired part of the country, preferred city, and climate peculiarities, you may select a perfect one. The team of 12 Knots spreads their professional services on more than 30 bases along the coast. You may rent a yacht or boat at bases situated in the most famous Greek cities and islands:

  • Santorini  and many others

Boat Types for Charters

Having a great number of bases in possession, 12 Knots aims to provide sailors with powerful sailboats from leading manufacturers. Approximately 6,000 vessels are now available for charter in Greece. Sailing yachts, catamarans, powerboats, gulets, and houseboats are waiting for your booking. Do not hesitate and contact our team to become an owner of a white shining boat at a good cost. It is advisable to perform booking beforehand to avoid disappointment and misunderstanding.

Other Information about Greece Sailing

Before diving into the images of future perfect sailing vacations, every sailor should be aware of some essential information about the intended place.

  • The official language is Greek, although English is also widely spoken, especially in tourist places.
  • Greece is the Euro zone; that’s why the official currency is Euro.
  • Greece is under the Schengen Agreement, which enables US citizens to enter the country without a visa and stay for no more than 90 days. For citizens of other countries, the consultation of the specialist is needed.

Top 10 Greece Catamaran Charters for 2024-2025!

Selecting where to go on your greece yacht charter.

“I want to see Santorini and Mykonos. My tickets are purchased for fixed dates three months from now in August, and I need to start and finish in Athens, chartering a catamaran.”

This is one of the most common inquiries and one of the hardest to fulfill. Why?

  • Time to charter – with 3 months to charter, your best options are long gone. Ideally, book 9-12 months before the charter
  • Flights vs Charter Location – with the distance between Athens and Santorini being 150 miles, the itinerary might not be possible due to weather, especially if we want to do Mykonos as well. Ideally, you’ll want to fly to Mykonos or Santorini or at least not plan fixed date island activities.
  • Fixed dates – One day up or down can completely change the offer of yachts available – you might need just that one that already has another charter booked for the day before you’re planning to return. It is a great idea to have your charter booked before you purchase your tickets.
  • Catamaran and long distances – as someone who does Athens – Santorini fairly regularly, it’s a great sail – for sport sailing. You’re on the open Aegean Sea and hiding behind islands is possible but further increases the distance – count 24 hours of sail one way and divide among the days of charter (24 hours x 2 ways / 7 days = 7 hours of sailing per day with a catamaran). Not a pleasurable experience.
  • Time of year – Santorini in August is equivalent to Times Square on New Year’s Eve. It can be a fantastic place if you have the correct expectations. There are 6,000 islands in Greece – plenty of alternatives for high-end restaurants, history, Greek cuisine, and peaceful or more popular places. Notice places like Milos and Lefkada are becoming increasingly crowded as well.
  • Despite all the above – inquire. We’re well-connected with local providers in all areas and are able to provide non-public offers or creatively fulfill your requirements.

Boots on The Ground Update:   Charter Season 2024 and What’s There To Know About Greece Yacht Charters

The charter season in Greece is developing unexpectedly, with an unprecedented number of higher-end yachts posting price reductions—an unthinkable development given the record-setting 2022 Summer Med Season.

The increased airplane fares are partly to blame for the ongoing issues in the Greek infrastructure – not enough marinas to match the demand on other islands and continued over-tourism of key Cycladic charter locations. In addition, 2022 and 2023 have seen record increases in the numbers of new yachts – some 235 crewed boats were added to the yacht charter fleet, while most of the older yacht inventory got a refurbishment – in part also due to the EU funds promoting tourism.

Donkeys are the way products have been shipped from the Old port via the Karavolades Stairs to the Town of Fira. Notice that most of them are mules - cross of a donkey and a horse

Recent Events in the Greek Yacht Charter Industry

Positive trends.

  • Increase of Ultra High Net Worth Individuals casting a spotlight – just Mykonos has seen Elon Musk, George Clooney, Christian Bale Matt Damon, Chris & Liam Hemsworth.
  • New, Upcoming Locations offer an alternative to the – “by now dead romantic idea of Mykonos and Santorini.” Antiparos is a hot charter location frequented by Tom Hanks, Jeff Bezos, and Anderson Cooper. Anafi, Ikaria, Kythira, and Nisiros are coming up, and the clients are more educated and receptive to the idea of chartering off the beaten and crowded paths .
  • A New Client Preference for Secluded Locations – A storm of documentaries have our clients requesting new experiences – we thank My Greek Odyssey and Peter Meneas on a journey of discovering his Kytherian descent and going much beyond and more with his yacht Mia Zoi or Costas Spiliadis – chef and owner of Estatorio Milos with the yacht Milos at Sea enable us to offer new immersive experiences creating not tourists, but travelers.
  • New Experiences—From having one or multiple jetskis onboard your yacht to chartering a Greek temple for your event, things are just easier to do in Greece. We’ve considerably expanded our concierge offering to accommodate requests ranging from beach horseback riding and spearfishing to luxury cars and entertainment events.
  • More luxury yachts are gearing up to meet the EU requirements for Large Group Charters (12+ guests). Check out our Top 10 Large Group Charters verified by our Brokers !

A Year-Over-Year Decrease in Demand

  • The cost of a July airplane ticket went from $900 to $1,400, year over year.
  • US inflation of 4-9% year over year weakens the purchasing position of the major charter market
  • Continued negative coverage of key Greek islands, from overcrowding of Santorini to DK Oyster restaurant scams on Mykonos, continues to dominate the headlines
  • Turkey – following the Ukrainian conflicts, Turkey offered a safe haven to many Russian-owned yachts that risked being confiscated in Greece. In addition to the competitive VAT in Turkey (1% in Turkey vs 12% in Greece – in constant threat to be increased to full standard 24% with possible retroactivity of signed charters executed in the future) – visit https://myturkishcharter.com for up-to-date and complete yacht offer of Turkish charter yachts. Greece has found itself in between the EU legislators and non-EU Turkish competition.

Market Saturation and Construction Delays

  • Santorini Marina – still in construction, unknown delays
  • Corinth Canal – successfully reopened on June 22 after repeated construction works on 22 and 23! after walls repeatedly collapsed due to landslides.
  • Slow Opening of New Marinas – Licencing issues – limited births restrict navigation of charter vessels
  • Inflation of the Charter Fleet following record-setting 2022 yacht returns and EU subsidies for tourism that were leveraged for the purchase of new vessels.

Essential Info for Greece Yacht Charters

Most yachts are based in athens.

The majority of our crewed charters in Greece depart from Athens to the Cyclades and the Saronic Gulf . Despite the Cyclades being the location we see most clients inquire about (because of the attractive islands of Mykonos and Santorini ), Greece has many more amazing destinations on offer.

It is important to keep in mind that the most hyped islands are quite crowded in the peak months, and despite the limitations made on cruise ships entering islands like Santorini, visitor numbers haven’t significantly dropped.

If you are unsure where to go, find some inspiration in our Ultimate Greece Yacht Charter Itinerary Guide . Here, you will find information about all the best charter destinations in Greece, location videos , and a complete list of our most popular itineraries .

The Distances Between the Islands are Quite Big

The distances between the Greek islands are quite big, especially in the Cyclades – It is, for example, a whole   150 miles from Athens to Santorini . A crewed motor yacht charter from Athens to Cyclades cruising at 12 knots usually does   day hops of 3-4 hours . The time increases for catamarans cruising at around 6 knots to at least 4-6 hours per day.

For this reason, we advise, especially first-time charterers, to   visit the Saronic Gulf   – Hydra , Spetses , and Poros instead, reducing time spent at sea and increasing time spent exploring the islands.

It is possible to cross from the Saronic Gulf to the Cyclades, which is usually done when Meltemi changes the plans of yachts from Athens.

Weather Conditions Can Significantly Impact Yacht Charter Itineraries in the Cyclades

The   strong Meltemi   winds make the journey from Athens to Santorini subject to the elements, and some flexibility is needed as weather can significantly delay the journey. To avoid this, inquire about starting in Mykonos or Santorini and skipping the long cruise from Athens.

Given that availability is contingent on the previous charter ending nearby or at your desired location, it is strongly recommended that you hold off on  buying airline tickets until a boat is secured.

Best Ionian Islands, Greece Yacht Charter Itinerary

Athens to the Ionian Islands through the Corinth Canal – One of the World’s Narrowest Canals

The third most popular crewed charter destination in Greece is the Ionian Sea . The Ionian Islands are only growing in popularity , and as more infrastructure is being built to accommodate more and larger yachts , the fleet is growing.

What makes the Ionian Islands such a great cruising ground is its lesser wind , which makes sticking to an itinerary much easier, and its islands’ closer proximity, which allows for easy island hopping in smaller jumps .

Although the fleet of permanent yachts, especially catamarans, is still limited in the Ionian Islands, it is possible to charter a yacht from Athens, passing through the Corinth Canal, one of the world’s narrowest canals . It is a very unique and spectacular experience to pass through here!

Our favorite spots.

There are so many places to go on a Greek sailing vacation, with the endless beautiful islands in the Aegean and Ionian Sea , that it can seem kind of overwhelming to plan a sailing itinerary.

The question is whether you want to follow the hype and visit all the most talked-about destinations or whether you are seeking a yacht charter in Greece off the beaten track.

There are loads of amazing secluded islands not overrun by tourists waiting for people to break the trend. They all have turquoise waters and ancient ruins; the difference is that you will have them more to yourself.

Here are some of our favorite spots that have been repeatedly recommended by Captains and Crew who have sailed in Greece for years:

The Old Pirate Island – Milos

Did you know that during the Middle Ages and through the Ottoman era, piracy thrived in the Aegean Sea? And Milos was actually a central hub due to its strategic location on key maritime routes. Milos, often dubbed “ Pirate Island ,” was ideal for pirate activities thanks to its complex coastline filled with coves, caves, and tunnels that served as perfect hideouts. These natural harbors not only allowed pirates to evade naval authorities but also to ambush passing ships and swiftly conceal their plundered treasures.

Milos was one of the most talked about destinations by Captains and Crew both at the Seminar as well as during onboard inspections at the show. They especially highlighted places like Sarakiniko Beach , known for its otherworldly, moon-like landscape and secluded bays.

Onboard Catamaran Explorion , Captain Konstantinos Perdikaris tells us: “I especially like the south of Milos, where you will find the best water and connected caves. It is just amazing. And you can only go there by boat; you cannot access it by land, and there are not even any ferries going there. It is very special and secluded.”  Captain Konstantinos also points out that the port of Milos is one of the best-protected ports in the Cyclades, making this the perfect hideout even in strong weather.

The Breadbasket of Greece –  Naxos

If you want a taste of real Greece, this is your island. Often referred to as the ‘Breadbasket’ of Greece , Naxos is one of the region’s most fertile islands and an agricultural gem. Olives, grapes, figs, and citrus fruit are just some of the produce growing on this island.

As the largest island in the Cyclades, Naxos is home to Mount Zeus , the tallest peak in the archipelago and the legendary birthplace of Zeus , king of the Greek gods.

The Iconic Portara

Another major attraction of Naxos is the Portara or the Great Door . This massive marble gateway is the remains of an unfinished temple dedicated to Apollo, which dates back to the 6th century BC . It stands on the islet of Palatia, which is connected to Naxos Town by a causeway.

The Portara has become an iconic symbol of Naxos and is especially famous for its stunning views during sunset . The structure frames the setting sun perfectly during certain times of the year, making it a popular spot for both photographers and visitors looking to capture a quintessential Greek sunset.

One of Greece’s most Protected Nature Reserve – Polyaigos

Part of Natura 2000 as a nature reserve unbothered by humans.

Polyaigos was by far the most mentioned favorite destination by Captains and Crew and was many times highlighted as one of the most amazing places to arrive on a yacht .

Polyaigos, literally meaning ‘many goats,’ is the biggest uninhabited island in the Aegean Sea. The reason for its name, is the huge wild goat population which live on the island.

But goats aside, Polyaigos is a deeply fascinating destination, primarily known for its dramatic natural landscape and rich biodiversity. It is part of the Natura 2000 network , which is a network of nature protection areas within the European Union. It is included notably because it supports a significant population of Mediterranean monk seals, which are among the most endangered marine mammals in the world .

The Best Place to Dine by the Water – Paros

Paros , located right next to Naxos, is another destination that constantly came up when talking best destinations in the Cyclades with both Captains and Crew. It seems that the reason why Paros is so popular is because it is an island with everything .

It has numerous stunning beaches like Kolymbithres and Golden Beach , to name a few, and charming Santorini-like villages like Naoussa and Parikia, which offer vibrant nightlife and historical sites. The island is a haven for watersports enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers alike, with opportunities for windsurfing, hiking, and exploring ancient marble quarries.

Captain’s Comment

Australian Captain Kristy Steindl named Paros her favorite island in the Cyclades, with Naoussa , the small fishing village on the northern coast, being the number one place to dine by the water . Naoussa offers a plethora of seafood restaurants, offering a real authentic Greek cuisine, right on the water’s edge, providing a matchless real Greek culinary experience against the backdrop of the serene waters. The bay offers excellent protection for anchoring , ensuring a peaceful stay.

Captain Kristy insists that Paros surpasses Santorini in terms of diversity and beauty with its abundance of stunning beaches. “In Santorini, you look out over the water from the top of a hill, literally hundreds of stairs from the water. In Paros, you look out from the white streets, and the water is so close you can smell it and dip your feet in. It’s a stunning island!”

A Paradise Away from the Crowds – Folegandros

When onboard Jewel , a 51-foot Catamaran, we asked Captain George Iliopoulos about his favorite destinations in the Cyclades. He did not hesitate a moment before he said Folegandros . His description of the island showed true enthusiasm for this place, which he has returned to so many times, both with charters and privately.

Unlike some of its more popular neighbors, it’s peaceful and untouched by mass tourism . Chora, the main town, sits up h igh on a cliff, giving you some of the best views of the Aegean Sea you’ll ever see . It’s got this old-world charm with its narrow streets and classic Greek architecture that’ll make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

Captain George also highlighted the island’s fantastic beaches , specifically mentioning Agali and Ambeli as favorites. One of their favorite charter activities for guests is a traditional Greek fish barbecue on the beach , enjoyed as the sun sets. Hostess and Chef Melina Chroni added that after a delicious meal of fresh seafood, cocktails around the fire always make for a memorable evening.

A panoramic view of Folegandros, Greece during sunset. The image captures the rugged, mountainous landscape bathed in golden light, highlighting the traditional white buildings scattered along the sloping terrain. The calm sea extends into the horizon under a clear sky, and a distinct church with a prominent white dome sits atop the hill, overseeing the scenic village below.

Book well in advance.

With 3 months to charter, your best options are long gone. Ideally, we advise you to book 9-12 months before your intended charter .

It is also important to consider to keep some level of flexibility . Coming into high season and wanting to charter in the most popular areas, Greece yacht charters can easily be booked back-to-back.

One day back or forth can completely change the offer of available yachts, as you might find that your preferred yacht is already booked one day before your selected return date. It is, therefore, also a good idea to have your Greece yacht charter booked before you purchase your flight ticket .

How do I choose the right yacht? How much does a yacht charter in Greece cost? And where is the best place to charter? We give you concrete information and facts about luxury charters in Greece, including market trends , transparent prices ( $15k to $250k weekly ), information about weather patterns and overcrowding, and the best Greece yacht charter deals and itineraries. -Our team consists of sailors and ex-charter crew!

Lots of companies will try to sell you the usual Greek Islands-turquoise waters pitch, focusing on famous destinations such as Santorini and Mykonos, not us. Truth is that apart from being overcrowded with tourists , the most hyped Greek Islands are also located in one of Greece’s windiest areas, and not just a quick sail from Athens.

We go  beyond the usual destinations with recommendations directly from Captains and insights gained at  yearly yacht shows  and  captain seminars to give you a more authentic charter experience in Greece

Yacht Charters in Greece with Istion

Greece is quite simply the perfect sailing destination in Europe. Blessed with a mild southern Mediterranean climate with an extended summer giving a comfortable sailing season of close to eight months, our small country has over 13,000 kilometres of coastline to explore . That impressive number comes from the over 6000 islands and islets scattered like diamonds in the sea, each of them inviting you to swim for hours, socialise while tasting Greece’s well know cuisine and enjoy the beauty of a Greek summer spent next to the waves. Greece is truly a sailor’s paradise .

At Istion Yachting, we have been providing unforgettable sailing holidays in Greece for more than 30 years. From our humble beginnings on the island of Kos in 1992 we now offer charters throughout Greece from our 11 main charter bases. Our experienced skippers and crews, charter base staff, planning departments and every one of the wider Istion team is an expert in their field and is ready to assist you in planning the perfect sailing holiday in Greece . We look forwarded to welcoming you this summer!

There are so many options, and only so much time. The diversity of the different sailing areas in Greece makes picking just one difficult, which is why so many of our guests come back to sail again and again . There is always another beautiful island to visit and another idyllic beach to swim on!

Peak sailing season is from late June through August with hot weather, warm seas and busy islands. Availability can become limited during this period so booking early is essential.

Late spring from May to June and late summer from September to early October are often considered the best time to sail for experienced sailors and repeat visitors to our country. The weather is great and the islands are more relaxed than the busy summer months.

For those who want to live the real Greek way of life, April and October can be rewarding, with less heat, fewer visitors and enticing low-season offers . A few of the restaurants and shops on some islands may not have opened or may have closed for the season, but in our opinion early and late season sailing in Greece is a magical and unique experience .

The Argo Saronic Gulf is actually two gulfs (the Saronic and Argolic ) that are often referred to together in sailing terms given their close distances to each other. The Saronic Gulf lies in between Athens and the coast of the Argolid Peninsula while the Argolic Gulf is one hop over in between the peninsula and the first large leg of the Eastern Peloponnese , which runs all the way south to Monemvasia.

We often recommend this area to first time sailors for a number of practical reasons. First and foremost, it is the easiest area to reach from Athens , which makes it an ideal spot for those arriving via the Athens International Airport. Within a few hours of touching down you can be swimming and relaxing on board having reached your first destination.

Another advantage is that the area is well protected from the annual Meltemi winds that can blow strongly in July and August and may create challenging conditions for less experienced sailors.

The Argo Saronic Gulf also has plenty of places to visit on either a one or two-week holiday. One-week holidays will usually take in the nearby islands of Aigina and Poros before looping down to the coastal town of Ermioni and the cosmopolitan islands of Spetses and Hydra further south. A visit to Epidavros for a quick trip to its famous ancient theatre is not to be missed for the history buffs.

Two week holidays allow you to explore further east, with the coastal towns of Nafpleio, Leonidio and Kyparissi offering relaxed mooring while cruising the coast of the Eastern Peloponnese.

We invite you to learn more about our Athens charter base , download our sample one-week Saronic Gulf sailing itinerary for inspiration and contact us with any questions, we are here to help you plan your perfect sailing holiday.

Ah, the Cyclades. A name steeped in history that brings the classic image of a Greek island to everyone’s mind. While Greece has many island chains and all of them are unique and magical, the Cyclades has become nearly synonymous with the county as a whole for many visitors.

Characterised by their white houses, rugged landscapes and world famous beaches , the Cyclades attract visitors from around the world and are a must see for everyone at some point in their life. For sailors the area offers a huge variety of routes and islands to visit, from the world famous islands Mykonos and Santorini to the popular Paros and Naxos and many, many more in between.

A note about the Meltemi winds that blow from the north in July and August. In the Cyclades these winds can make for challenging conditions and sailing the area during these times is best for experienced sailors. Don’t despair all you beginner sailors! If you want a helping hand our skippers are the best in Greece and will be happy to take care of the sailing and navigation so you can enjoy the islands worry free.

The Cyclades are reached from our main base in Alimos Marina on the western side of Attica giving quick access to the islands of Kea, Kithnos, Serifos, Sifnos and Milos among others.

Our base in Lavrion is perfect for getting a head start to the islands of Andros, Tinos, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos . The Lavrion base is further south and on the east side of Attica, saving a couple of hours of additional sailing time on your way out. As an added bonus, Lavrion is just half an hour from the Athens International Airport so you can be on your way towards your destination just an hour or two after landing.

Located on the western side of Greece the seven main islands of the Ionian Sea have their own unique charm and character . The Ionian Islands are much greener than most islands in Greece, their location and geography bringing more rainfall during the winter months and allowing trees and shrubs to grow and thrive. The combining of colours between the green of the hills , the white of the sands and the blue of the sea are a special treat for visitors to this area.

Istion maintains three bases in the Ionian, on Corfu in the north and in Lefkas (or Lefkada) and nearby Preveza further south.

Itineraries starting from Corfu may include multiple stops along the Corfu coast, visits to the islands of Paxos and Antipaxos and visits to mainland ports including Parga and Syvota .

Trips starting from Lefkas or Preveza may head either north towards Corfu or South towards the islands of Kalamos and Kastos and then on to the mythical island of Ithaca and nearby Kefalonia . Note that our base in Preveza is just 10 minutes from the Aktion Airport where all charter flights to Lefkas arrive. If your flight times are tight, Preveza is a great option .

We recommend downloading our sample sailing itineraries for trips leaving from Corfu and from Lefkas or Preveza . If you need more recommendations for a truly unique voyage through to the Ionian just contact us , we will be happy to help.

The Dodecanese islands in the southeast Aegean are close to our heart. The central island of Kos is where Istion Yachting first started operations in 1992 .

The Dodecanese are known for their wonderful beaches and rich history ranging from the ancient to the medieval to the modern in a delightful kaleidoscope of sights and sounds . The area has relatively mild wind conditions that are perfect for sailing throughout the year and has plenty of sun and warmth during the summer months.

Istion now has two bases in the Dodecanese, our home base on Kos and another on the historic island of Rhodes . From Kos you may head north towards the islands of Kalimos, Leros and Patmos and if time permits all the way to amazing Ithaki and Fourni .

Heading south from Kos will put you on course to visit the islands north of Rhodes including Nisiros, Tilos and Symi . Setting sail from Rhodes itself also reaches these islands or you can choose to head west, exploring the coast of Rhodes and visiting the quaint island of Chalki and the beautiful islands of Karpathos and Kasos .

Charter flights from most European countries fly direct to both Kos and Rhodes making them a great starting point for your next Aegean adventure !

The Sporades are the hidden gem on the Greek sailing map . Nestled off the eastern coast of central Greece the main islands of Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos and Skyros are a beautiful combination of green mountains, sandy and pebble beaches and deep blue seas. Nature plays a staring role here, with the National Marine Park at Alonissos being a significant refuge for the Monachus Monachus or Mediterranean seal .

Sailing conditions in the Sporades are relatively mild, although winds can shift between the day and night requiring some care when mooring. Distances between islands are short allowing a lot of fun to be packed into a week long charter .

We have two charter bases servicing the Sporades, a base on the island of Skiathos where most European charter flights arrive and another on the mainland city of Volos . Volos is a convenient starting spot for guests arriving by road with their own vehicle and allows exploring of the lovely coastline of the Pagasetic Gulf and Pelion on your way out to the islands – highly recommended !

Bareboat Charters

Tailored for the seasoned sailor, bareboat charters hand the helm over to you, allowing complete freedom to navigate the Greek seas at your own pace . Your sailing party must have at least one licensed skipper and one experienced crew member at a minimum to be able to rent our yachts as bareboats.

If you have some sailing experience but do not hold a valid license then a bareboat charter is not (yet) for you and your best option is a skippered charter where our friendly captains will give you a helping hand. If you are an experienced sailor and have no concerns about the challenges of wind conditions, navigation and docking then we invite you to read more about our bareboat charters here and contact us with any questions you may have.

Skippered Charters

Our skippered charters are the perfect blend of guidance and freedom, designed for those who have some sailing experience, are eager to learn or just want to relax and let a professional do the hard work . With an Istion skipper at your side, you can enjoy the peace of mind that comes with their expert navigation and docking skills while still playing an active role in your sailing adventure.

It's an educational and exhilarating experience where you can hone your sailing skills, participate in manoeuvring the yacht, and even take the helm under the watchful eye of your skipper. It is an amazing experience for everyone and kids in particular have a great time learning about sailing and playing little captain for a week.

Our skippered charters always start off with a briefing between you and your skipper so you can learn about the area you are going to sail and the islands you may want to visit. Our skippers know the Greek seas inside out and based on your preferences they will suggest recommended itineraries to follow, which islands to visit and what hidden beaches to swim at.

If you are planning your first sailing holiday in Greece , you are in the very best hands with Istion's professional skippers by your side. Read more about our skippered charters here , or just get in touch to start planning your perfect sailing holiday in Greece.

Discover more about our fully crewed dream vacations here .

Sailing Yachts

Sailing yachts are perfect for those who love the classic feeling of sailing. Designed to be easy to handle, they smoothly glide through the water and let you enjoy the natural beauty of the Greek seas. They're a bit slower than other boats, and they lean to one side when the wind blows, which is all part of the classic sailing adventure. Their charming appearance and comfortable ride make them ideal for those who want to experience traditional sailing in a relaxed and eco-friendly way.

Sailing yachts are also the most budget friendly option for a sailing holiday in Greece. Our smaller yachts with three cabins and space for up to six guests (or eight if two sleep in the main cabin) can be rented for as little as roughly 1200 Euros a week in the low season. Costs for larger yachts with up to 6 cabins and space for up to 12 guests rise to approximately 10.000 Euros a week in the high season.

At Istion, we proudly offer a wide selection of the latest models as well as impeccably maintained older sailing yachts from Jeanneau, Beneteau, Bavaria, Sun Odyssey, Hanse and other top shipyards. Whether you're planning a cozy trip for a small group or a grand sailing adventure for a larger party, we have the right yacht to suit your needs.

Catamarans are the choice for those who want lots of space and a stable, comfortable trip. With their two-hull design, they don't rock as much as sailing yachts, which is great if you're new to sailing or easily feel seasick. You can also get closer to the beach with a catamaran, as they don't sit very deep in the water. Catamarans offer a smooth and spacious experience, making for a relaxing and comfortable sailing holiday and are a very popular choice for first time sailors in Greece.

For families and larger groups, the bigger cabins and more room to move around on a catamaran make them a good fit for your holiday. The double hull layout means two families can easily sail together while each having their own 'private space' on either side of the main deck. Catamarans also tend to have one washroom per cabin, a feature all parents with teenage kids appreciate.

The comfort and space offered in a catamaran puts them in a higher budget bracket than our monohull sailing yachts. Our smallest catamarans with four cabins and room for up to 10 guests start at roughly 2100 Euros per week in low season. Our top of the line models can range up to 16.000 Euros plus in the middle of the high season.

We are proud to have one of the largest fleets of catamarans in Greece with brand new models from Lagoon, Bali and Fountaine Pajot among others. We invite you to browse all our catamarans and contact us for any guidance you need to help make your sailing adventure in Greece perfect in every way.

Motor Yachts

Motor yachts are all about luxury and speed. They have multiple levels with lots of space, including big bedrooms and expansive living areas. These boats move quickly, powered by strong engines, so they're great if you want to explore a lot of places fast and make an impressive entrance wherever you go.

Our motor yachts are all modern, with plush interiors and all the latest features for entertainment and entertaining. However, they do use more fuel and require a professional captain and crew, so there's a higher cost for this kind of luxury and speed. If you're looking for a high-end and fast-paced trip with all the modern comforts, motor yachts are the way to go .

Skippered yacht charter greece.

Sailing holidays on a yacht rental is not just for sailors. It is for everyone seeking something more than the sea, the sun, and a sunbed. We provide professionally trained skippers for those who wish to rent a yacht and enjoy relaxing sailing holidays in Greece or those who wish to get involved and learn the ropes and the sails during a skippered yacht charter in Greece. After all, learning how to sail is easy. Depending on crew eagerness, our skipper will not only show how to navigate but will also provide firsthand knowledge of the Greek island destinations.

Skippered yacht charter in Greece - Sailing Heaven

  • need more experience and more confidence to take a yacht rental on their own
  • want to get familiar with the Greek waters (first time to Greece)
  • need a hand because no other in their crew may provide sufficient help
  • need a guide to be with them and show the best coves and secluded bays for moorage and/or swimming, as well as the best places in seaside villages to eat and drink
  • want to relax and enjoy leaving the helm and sails in the hands of someone who can be trusted

Our skippers are hospitable, friendly, discrete and knowledgeable about every destination and you will discuss together your preferences and plan your route. Choosing a skippered yacht charter, you also hire the skipper who will take care of the yacht for you and will ensure that you get the most out of your sailing holidays in Greece. When you select from our yachts for rent, keep in mind that you have to provide a cabin or berth in cabin for your skipper as he is obliged to sleep on board. Apart from the skipper’s fee, you have to also provide his meals either from the meals you prepare on board or at an eating place ashore. The skipper’s fee, regardless of the season and the people on board, is €140 to €190 depending on the yacht rental. You may wish to hire also a cook/hostess. The fee per day is generally 10 euro less than the skipper’s and you need to provide berth and meals as for the skipper. The running expenses for a skippered yacht charter are just like those of a bareboat charter (fuel, gas, water, meals, port/marina fees, etc.), plus the costs for the hired crew as above. Although some of our yacht rentals are offered only skippered (yacht charter prices include skipper’s fee), you may choose any of our bareboat charter yachts fitting your needs and let us know if you wish to have a skipper (select the check-box on the form of the yacht rental booking request).

The Greek unspoiled coastline and offshore islands have so many spectacular spots to visit that it is a natural start to any itinerary. Skippered yacht charter in Greece is all about your own private cruise where you can plan your own itinerary and visit exactly the places and attractions you want, from some of the world’s few truly iconic destinations to serene coves that are not accessible by land.

Want to experience a sizzling skippered sailing holiday in Greece?

With so many islands dotting the Greek archipelagos, the route options seem limitless. When you rent a boat with us you are free to compose your own itinerary.

3 WAYS TO CHARTER A YACHT

We provide a selection of three charter options: Bareboat Charters , Skippered Charters , and Crewed Charters . Opting for a Bareboat Charter means you have the freedom to captain the yacht yourself, requiring only a valid International Certificate of Competence (ICC). If you don't possess an ICC or simply prefer to sit back and relax, you have the option to have one of our experienced skippers join your journey, taking the helm for you. We collaborate with a network of highly skilled, multilingual professionals who are eager to come on board.

It's worth noting that some of our larger catamarans and motor yachts are exclusively available as Crewed Charters. With this option, a dedicated crew of at least two individuals, typically a skipper and a hostess or cook, will cater to your every need, ensuring a truly indulgent experience for you and your guests.

Yacht Rental Greece

In the heart of the Mediterranean, the sapphire blue sea encloses a land where the ancient gods once reigned supreme, a world carved by the patient yet relentless hands of geological time. Like the scorching sun kissing the landscape of olive groves and ancient ruins, the essence of Greece seems forever entwined with the sea that surrounds it. In this context, the prospect of renting a yacht in Greece becomes not merely a luxury holiday, but an immersion into an ecosystem that thrums with historical resonance and marine biodiversity.

Embracing the Call of the Aegean

Yacht Rental Greece

Renting a yacht in Greece provides the traveller with an unrivalled way to experience the shimmering necklace of islands that scatter across the Aegean and Ionian Seas . Each island, with its unique topography and diverse array of fauna, becomes a world in itself, ripe for exploration. As you sail from harbour to secluded cove, from bustling port to the tranquillity of an untouched beach, the grand theatre of life unfolds before your eyes. Yachting opens up opportunities for encounters with the playful dolphins that escort you through the waves, the regal falcons soaring above rocky crags, and the ceaseless rhythm of the tides that have whispered the same tune for eons.

Sailing Through History: A Tour of Greece's Unforgettable Maritime Destinations

🚢 Santorini: The Crown Jewel of the Cyclades

Your voyage commences in the Cyclades , with the island of Santorini . Famed for its sunsets and iconic blue-domed architecture, Santorini is the remnants of an ancient volcanic caldera. A stop in Santorini allows you to explore the winding streets and sample locally-produced wines, grown in the island's unique volcanic soil.

🚢 Mykonos: The Island of the Winds

The next anchor point is the bustling island of Mykonos , another Cycladic gem. Known for its vibrant nightlife and charming old town, Mykonos is a haven for lovers of culture and merriment. Explore the narrow alleyways dotted with boutique shops and fine restaurants, or marvel at the iconic windmills overlooking the azure Aegean Sea.

🚢 Delos: The Birthplace of Apollo

A short sail from Mykonos, you find the uninhabited island of Delos, an archaeological sanctuary and the mythological birthplace of the twin gods Apollo and Artemis. The island offers a unique opportunity to delve into ancient history, with the remains of temples, houses, and the iconic Terrace of the Lions standing as silent testament to a bygone era.

🚢 Lefkada: Sailing into Serenity

Lefkada , a turquoise gem, lures yacht enthusiasts with its pristine beaches and enchanting coves. Sailing around this Ionian paradise offers a blend of tradition and untouched nature, making every anchorage a new discovery.

🚢 Rhodes: The Ancient Mariner's Dream

Rhodes , a crossroad of civilizations, beckons sailors with its rich history and sun-kissed shores. Medieval towns and azure bays intertwine, offering a unique yachting journey through time.

Thessaloniki , Greece's gastronomic hub, entices mariners with its bustling port and vibrant culture. Anchoring here promises a dance of flavors and a glimpse into Macedonia's spirited heartbeat.

🚢 Chalkidiki: Trident's Treasure Troves

Chalkidiki ’s trident-like peninsulas promise yachters secluded bays, emerald waters, and lush forests. Sailing its intricate coastline reveals a world where nature and myth are forever entwined.

🚢 Naxos: The Green Heart of the Cyclades

As you leave the lively shores of Mykonos, your yacht carries you to the largest island of the Cyclades, Naxos. Here, verdant mountains and fertile valleys teem with olive groves and vineyards. Explore the Venetian Castle in Naxos Town, or lose yourself in the serenity of secluded beaches that dot the island's coastline.

🚢 Ithaca: The Home of Odysseus

The Ionian Sea invites you next to Ithaca, famed as the home of Homer's Odysseus. Its rugged coastlines, laced with hidden coves and secluded beaches, beckon you to moor your yacht and explore. Ithaca's interior is a world of ancient olive trees, charming villages, and paths that whisper tales of the legendary king's long journey home.

🚢 Athens:  Yachting at the Cradle of Civilization

Athens , with its proximity to the Saronic Gulf, offers yacht enthusiasts a blend of history and stunning Mediterranean views. Sail through ancient seas, explore world-class marinas, and indulge in Greece's culinary delights. Athens is a timeless yacht destination, where myth and modernity meet in maritime harmony.

Nestled on the tip of the Attica Peninsula, Lavrio 's port is a gateway to the alluring Aegean Sea. Its modern marinas, rich mining history, and proximity to ancient temples make it a unique yachting destination. Experience the blend of antiquity and elegance as you embark on a Lavrio yachting adventure.

🚢 Hydra: The Island of Artists

Closer to mainland Greece, nestled in the Saronic Gulf, Hydra emerges as a haven for artists. Motor vehicles are absent from this island, giving it a timeless feel. It is a place where donkeys still carry goods through narrow stone alleys, and grand sea captain's mansions harken back to Hydra's maritime past. Its picturesque harbour and crystal clear waters are sure to charm.

🚢 Symi: The Neoclassical Wonder

Your next stop is Symi, part of the Dodecanese islands. Upon entering Symi's harbour, you are greeted by a stunning amphitheatre of neoclassical houses, cascading down the hills to the vibrant, azure bay. Symi offers a peaceful retreat, with tranquil beaches and a slower pace of life. Don't miss a visit to the Monastery of the Archangel Michael Panormitis, a place of spiritual serenity.

🚢 Kefalonia: The Blue and Green Island

Returning to the Ionian Sea, Kefalonia awaits. This island is a paradise of diverse landscapes, featuring towering mountains, lush vineyards, and golden beaches. Melissani Cave with its ethereal blue waters is a must-visit, as is Myrtos Beach, often hailed as one of the most stunning beaches in Greece.

🚢 Skiathos: The Sporades' Star

Skiathos is the gem of the Sporades islands. This small but lively island is known for its golden sandy beaches, turquoise waters and the verdant pine forests that reach the sea. The medieval Bourtzi fortress, situated on a small peninsula in Skiathos Town, offers panoramic views of the Aegean.

🚢 Zakynthos: The Flower of the Levant

Your final destination is Zakynthos in the Ionian Islands. Here, the famous Navagio beach, also known as Shipwreck Beach, is an unmissable sight. The turquoise waters and the dramatic cliffs make for unforgettable swimming and sightseeing. On the island's western coast, the Blue Caves are a spectacular natural formation accessible only by boat, and an ideal spot to observe the marine life of the Ionian Sea.

Embarking on this voyage, the spirit of Greece unfurls before you like a canvas of blue and white, imprinted with history and graced by nature's generous hand. Each island, each wave carries a story, waiting to be discovered on your journey across the Grecian seas.

The Considerations of Voyage: A Primer on Yacht Rental

Yacht Rental Greece

Embarking on a yacht rental in Greece necessitates careful consideration of numerous factors to ensure the journey is not only enjoyable, but also respectful of the delicate marine ecosystems you traverse.

⛵ Seasons and Climate

The Mediterranean climate, with its dry summers and mild, wet winters, dictates the rhythms of life in the Grecian seas. The peak yachting season aligns with the sun-drenched days from May to October. Outside these months, the waters can be turbulent, the skies grey and the weather unpredictable.

⛵ Nautical Skills

A keen understanding of nautical navigation and maritime safety is essential. Many yacht rentals offer the service of an experienced skipper, adept at reading the changing moods of the sea. They serve as your guide through the waters, ensuring a safe passage while you soak in the beauty of the Grecian archipelagos.

⛵ Environmental Consciousness

As an unobtrusive visitor to the marine environment, it is incumbent upon you to uphold a sense of environmental stewardship. Waste disposal, energy consumption, and respect for local wildlife are all aspects that need to be managed responsibly to protect the enchanting biodiversity of the Grecian seas.

The Ideal Vessel: Choosing Your Yacht

The choice of your vessel is paramount, and largely dependent on the desired balance of luxury, speed, and capacity. For the sun-soaked waters of Greece, several types of yachts offer a unique blend of these features.

⛵ The Luxury Superyacht

For those seeking utmost indulgence, the luxury superyacht is an unrivalled choice. Equipped with an array of modern amenities, the superyacht offers a level of comfort that rivals any five-star resort. Yet, it goes beyond this. Imagine waking to a changing view each morning, the endless blue stretching out before you as the shoreline transforms from the honey-hued cliffs of Santorini to the verdant hills of Zakynthos.

⛵ The Sleek Catamaran

The catamaran offers stability and ample space, with its twin-hulled design. This is an ideal choice for families or larger groups. Their shallower draft allows you to navigate closer to the islands, exploring hidden coves and secluded beaches. The gentle rhythm of the catamaran ensures a smooth journey across the placid summer seas of Greece.

⛵ The Classic Sailing Yacht

For the true sailing aficionado, there is nothing quite like a traditional sailing yacht. Harnessing the power of the wind, these vessels offer a more intimate experience with the elements. Sailing yachts demand a greater degree of skill and knowledge, but reward with an exhilarating connection to the sea and the wind.

In the radiant glow of the Grecian sun and the lull of the undulating sea, the act of yachting in Greece becomes not just a journey through space, but also through time. A voyage that carries the promise of encounters with awe-inspiring ecosystems, of rediscovering the ancient roots of Western civilisation, and of basking in the tranquil luxury that only a yacht can offer. It is, in essence, a way of becoming part of the timeless narrative of the sea.

Navigating Your Grecian Voyage: Addressing Common Queries

In our shared voyage across the sparkling waters and sun-drenched isles of Greece, we understand that many questions may arise. Here, we anticipate your inquiries, addressing them in the spirit of shared discovery and our mutual fascination for this ancient sea-bound nation.

What is the best time to rent a yacht in Greece?

The best time to embark on a yachting journey in Greece is typically between May and October, when the Mediterranean climate offers warm, sun-filled days and calm seas. This period is the high season for yacht rentals, offering a perfect blend of favourable weather and vibrant island life.

What kind of yacht should I rent?

The choice of yacht is largely dependent on your personal preferences and needs. For larger groups and families, a catamaran offers ample space and stability. If luxury and comfort are paramount, consider a superyacht, which offers a host of modern amenities. For those seeking a more intimate connection with the sea, a traditional sailing yacht can be an exhilarating choice.

Do I need a license to sail in Greece?

The Greek authorities require at least one member of the crew to have a valid International Certificate of Competence (ICC) or an equivalent national certificate from your country of residence. If you do not have sailing qualifications, hiring a skipper is a popular option. The skipper can safely navigate the boat while you relax and enjoy the journey.

How can I respect the environment during my yacht rental?

Practicing environmentally friendly sailing involves a variety of measures. Be mindful of waste disposal - many yachts are equipped with holding tanks or you can dispose of waste at port facilities. Limit your use of single-use plastics on board, and respect the local wildlife by maintaining a safe distance. Finally, be conscious of your energy consumption and try to maximise the use of sails over the engine when possible.

Can I visit multiple islands during my yacht rental?

Absolutely. The beauty of renting a yacht is the freedom it offers to explore multiple destinations. The Greek islands are well-suited to island hopping, with many desirable locations in close proximity to one another. This allows you to discover the unique charm of each island at your own pace.

In sharing these answers, we hope to enhance your understanding of what a yachting adventure in Greece entails. As always, our journey is enriched by your curiosity, and we stand ready to navigate these enchanting waters alongside you.

Boat Charter in Greece

Embark on an unforgettable journey with a Greece boat charter : Immerse yourself in the allure of a nation boasting over 6,000 islands and more than 13,500 km of breathtaking coastline. Your holiday takes on a whole new dimension as you explore the mesmerizing Greek islands on a memorable boat charter adventure.

What kind of boat licence do you need when sailing in Greece?

Small boats with less than 30hp don’t require a boat licence in Greece , but in general, you need to have a valid boat licence when renting a boat in Greece. Your safest bet is to carry an International Certificate of Competency or short ICC to operate a boat in Greece. If you are an EU citizen, your boat licence is automatically valid in Greece, citizens of other countries need to ensure that their boat licence meets the requirements of the Greek boat licence . Before your boat charter in Greece , you need to ensure that you carry a boat licence with you in either English or Greek. When your licence is issued in a different language, you need to get it translated into either English or Greek. This is particularly important as the Greek authorities check your documents to ensure that the Greek waters remain a safe space for everyone operating a water vehicle here.

Greece is the ideal location to charter a boat thanks to its pleasant weather conditions and winds that make sailing a breeze. Go island hopping in early or late summer (end of April until around mid-October) for the finest weather with sea temperatures in the low to mid-60s. Excellent sailing conditions for both beginners and experienced sailors ensure that you will enjoy your sailing vacation fully.

Going on a sailing holiday in Greece in the summer also means you’ll experience vibrant nightlife, bustling yacht parties, and inspiring landscapes full of blooming wildflowers, olive trees, and grapevines.

If you want to rent a sailboat, you should visit the places in Greece that offer the best wind conditions. Cruise around the inland sea, where you’ll find many harbours and anchorages in addition to ideal wind conditions. Many of the island regions offer ideal sailing conditions for chartering a yacht , including those located in the Saronic Islands and the Eastern coast of the Peloponnesian Gulf .

If you plan to charter a boat in the Cyclades , you should know that it is one of the most challenging, yet fun sailing areas due to strong winds in July and August. We recommend this route only to very experienced sailors.

When is the best time for a boat charter in Greece?

The ideal time for a boat charter in Greece hinges upon your preferences and the experience you desire. Greece's peak season spans from late May to early September, marked by warm weather and tranquil waters, making it perfect for swimming, water sports, and exploring the dynamic Greek islands. If you rent a boat in Greece in July and August you can be sure to catch the warmest months and take advantage of the many parties happening during this time of year. For those seeking a quieter, more budget-conscious journey, the shoulder seasons of April to early May and late September to October offer appealing alternatives. When sailing in Greece in October or during other months of the shoulder season, you can still enjoy pleasant weather, but with fewer crowds, granting you the opportunity to savor Greece's beauty in a more intimate setting. Venturing to Greece during the winter months is typically discouraged, as many services and activities tend to shut down. Therefore, the best time for your Greek boat charter largely depends on whether you crave the lively spirit of summer or a more peaceful and cost-effective escape.

Sailing in High Season (July and August):

Advantages:

Sun-drenched days and clear skies for sunbathing and water activities.

Most tourist hotspots, restaurants, and nightlife options are in full swing.

Excellent for mingling and connecting with fellow travelers.

Disadvantages:

Crowds can be overwhelming in well-known tourist areas, potentially affecting the tranquility of certain anchorages.

Charter, accommodation, and dining prices tend to be higher.

Booking well in advance is essential due to high demand.

Sailing in Off-Shoulder Season (April to early May, late September to October):

Smaller crowds create a more peaceful and intimate ambiance.

Charters and accommodations are often more budget-friendly.

Weather remains pleasant for sailing and outdoor pursuits.

Sea temperatures may not be as ideal for swimming in April and October.

Limited nightlife options and reduced hours for some attractions.

Itineraries might need to be more adaptable due to occasional weather fluctuations.

In essence, the high season provides vibrant, sun-soaked experiences but comes with elevated costs and larger crowds. The off-shoulder season offers a quieter, budget-conscious option, with some possible weather limitations and fewer activity choices. Your choice between these two seasons should be guided by your personal preferences and priorities.

What type of boat is best for sailing in Greece?

Depending on the type of boat holiday you want to experience when sailing in Greece, you should choose your boat wisely. Catamarans are the type of vehicle to rent if you want to go slower and take in your surroundings while enjoying all kinds of amenities on board that anyone could wish for while a sailboat is the type of boat you would rent when looking for an adventure in this part of the Mediterranean.

Rent a catamaran in Greece

Pros of renting a catamaran in Greece

Renting a catamaran in Greece comes with many advantages. Contrary to classic sailboats, catamarans don’t have a keel which might prevent you from sailing closer to the shore. And you do want to be as close to the shore as possible. After all, when anchoring in one of Greece’s many hidden bays with the most beautiful beaches, you wouldn’t want to waste all your precious time and energy to swim there for eternity or worse end up having to enjoy the view just from a distance.

Cons of renting a catamaran in Greece

Renting a catamaran in Greece is perfect for discovering the many natural wonders the country has to offer, but chartering a catamaran is not just pure joy and sunshine. As this type of boat stands on two hulls, a catamaran is usually quite big. This can make it difficult to moore in the marinas. During high season you might even struggle to find a spot where your boat fits. Additionally, mooring your catamaran at a marina might come at a higher price than mooring other types of water vehicles due its size. This is something to keep in mind - especially when trying to find a spot to spend the night.

Sailing yacht charter in Greece

Pros of a sailboat rental in Greece

Due to the perfect sailing conditions, renting a sailboat in Greece is the perfect opportunity for those looking at going on a boat to enjoy the experience more than trying to find a hotel room on water. The best spots for renting a sailboat in Greece are the Saronic Islands and the eastern coast of the Peloponnesian Gulf. If you are worried that you might not be experienced enough to sail these routes, you can always rent a sailboat with a skipper who can navigate and operate the boat in Greek waters.

The average price of renting a sailboat in Greece speaks for itself. It is one of the cheapest options to experience a boat holiday on the Greek islands.

Cons of a sailing yacht charter in Greece

If you are looking to discover stunning beaches like Kokkini Beach in Santorini, a sailboat is not the best choice. Due to the keel, it can become dangerous to sail in shallow waters and too close to the shore. This would be a downside of renting a sailboat.

Rent a sailboat in Greece

Greece motor yacht charter

Pros of a motorboat rental in Greece

Motorboats as well as RIBs are the perfect choice for anyone planning on sailing around Greece for a couple of days. You can easily spend a few days on these types of boats without missing any of the amenities that other types of boats, like catamarans provide. A motorboat hire in Greece means that you are looking at speeding over the waves and passing by the stunning Greek islands at high speed. The destination is the most important aspect on your sailing trip to Greece, you want to see as many hidden beaches as possible, anchor in a stunning bay for the night to wake up with incredible views, and enjoy a refreshing beverage while watching the sunset.

Cons of renting a motorboat in Greece

One of the downsides of renting a motorboat in Greece is that you won’t have as many amenities as you might get with another type of boat. Also, the high speed comes with a hefty price tag with fuel prices steadily increasing. Not necessarily an advantage.

Rent a motorboat in Greece
