What Choose
Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Crete
At Yachting.Rent, we offer an extensive selection of yachts to make your seafaring journey around the beautiful island of Crete a dream come true. One question we often receive is whether to opt for a sailing boat or a catamaran. We believe the decision lies in the kind of experience you seek.
The Classic Sailing Boat Experience For the traditionalists, a sailing boat offers an authentic sailing adventure that connects you with the sea in a profound way. There’s a unique thrill in manipulating the sails and rudder to navigate the waters that motor-powered vessels simply cannot match. Sailing boats are perfect for smaller groups looking for a cozy, intimate setting. They are also often the choice of those looking to test their sailing skills and feel the harmony of working with the winds and the waves.
The Luxury of a Catamaran On the other hand, if your primary concern is comfort and stability, a catamaran would be an ideal choice. With its dual-hull design, a catamaran offers more space, stability, and smooth sailing, making it less likely to rock in choppy waters. The expansive decks of our catamarans provide ample space for sunbathing, dining, and unwinding, making them perfect for larger groups or families.
Why Choose? Experience Both! At Yachting.Rent, we don’t believe in restricting your choices. Depending on the length of your stay, you could opt to experience both vessels, dividing your time between the classic seafaring charm of a sailing boat and the spacious luxury of a catamaran.
Supported by a Dedicated Team Whether you choose a sailing boat or a catamaran, our team at Yachting.Rent is committed to providing you with an unforgettable journey. We offer the option of bareboat charter for experienced sailors, or you can choose to have a professional skipper guide your journey.
Uncover the treasures of Crete, from the sparkling azure waters to the rich, cultural history. Reach out to us at Yachting.Rent, and we’ll help you select the perfect vessel for your Cretan sailing adventure. Let’s set sail for an unforgettable experience!

Crete Luxury Yacht Charter Vacations
A Crete yacht charter gives you unrivalled coastal access to Greece’s largest island and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean. It lies south of the Aegean Sea and was historically and important link between Africa and Asia. At over 62 miles long, Crete’s coastline consists of both sandy beaches and rocky shores. Most luxury charter yachts and private superyachts visit during July and August when the weather is at its best. Favourite luxury yacht anchorages include Ayia Roumeli, Loutro, Vai and Spinaloga. There’s also a good selection of ports like Ayios Nikolaos, Iraklio and Rethimno.
Crete is well known for its beautiful beaches like Balos Beach, Preveli Beach and Falassama Beach, most of which are in the south of the island. Water sports such as jet skiing and wind surfing are very popular here. Why not arrange an island tour to see the White Mountains, Mount Ida, caves and amazing landscapes?
For yacht charterers who are interested in Greek history, Crete is certainly the place to head for. One of the most popular attractions is the Palace of Knossos, just south of Iraklio. This is a well-preserved palace containing workshops, storerooms, the throne room, banqueting halls and the royal quarters. It dates back to 2000-1350 BC and is a must-visit.
Those holidaymakers who enjoy trekking and walking won’t be disappointed when rambling through Crete’s mountains and hills. Take a walk out of Maleme to the quaint hilltop village of Deres. Here there’s a friendly taverna and a whitewashed church. The Samaria National Park which is accessible by bus has one of the biggest gorges in all of Europe.
If you have children with you on your yacht charter vacation, the Acqua Plus Water Park won’t disappoint them. Less than 20 miles from Heraklion it is split into two sections, one for children and one for adults. The delightful gardens around the water park have many exotic plants and flowers to see with a water slide waiting to be discovered underneath a lovely weeping willow tree. With slides, games and a lazy river, spend the day at this exciting park before returning to your superyacht for a good night’s rest.
Next day why not visit the Venetian Harbour which is full of charm and grandeur? Your yacht charter captain can arrange anchorage nearby. Alternatively, there’s the CretAquarium that holds over 2,000 different species of marine life. There’s nothing better than a hearty Greek meal so look out for foodie hotspots that are rustic and have amazing menus. Don’t forget to order a bottle of the local wine. All in all Crete is a wonderful destination for a yacht charter holiday.

What is the best time to visit Crete?
The most popular time to visit Crete is during the summer when the weather is hot and dry. The temperatures in July and August can reach up to 30 degrees Celsius and the sun shines for around 12 hours! However, this time of year is also the most crowded time to visit Crete. Therefore, a private yacht charter is a perfect way to distance yourself from the crowds and explore the hidden beaches around the coastline.
Should you charter a private yacht with or without a skipper?
You will find that many yachts on Scansail come with the option to include a skipper. While this adds to the overall price, it can bring many advantages to your boating holiday. For example, a professional skipper is ideal for people that do not have nautical experience, because they will take care of all the sailing, docking, and anchoring for you. Moreover, the skipper will be familiar with Crete and its waters, leaving you in comfortable and safe hands. Overall, a skipper has so much to offer when it comes to a private yacht charter in Crete, so don’t miss out on the opportunity!
What to do in Crete
Crete is not only one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Greece, but also the entire Mediterranean! There is so much to experience on this island that it can be hard to decide where to start. This is why we have some suggestions to inspire you on your boating holiday.
If you want to get to know the long history of this island, then the best way to learn is by visiting the town centres. You can visit the capital, Heraklion, or other large cities such as Chania and Rethymno. While you walk around the cobblestone streets, you can see remains of the numerous civilisations that stood before such as the Minoans, Venetians, and Ottomans. Some particularly unique examples of architecture are the arched paved streets and high buildings from the Venetians or the Mosque of the Janissaries in Chania from the Ottomans. You can also visit the stunning Palace of Knossos to get to know more about Crete’s myths, where it was said to be home to the Minotaur during the Bronze Age.
Apart from the culture, this island has an endless amount of beautiful beaches with turquoise waters. One of the most famous examples is the Balos Lagoon in Kissamos. This beach has silky white sands and clear waters that attract tourists from all over. You can find it between Cape Gramvousaa and Cape Tigani, however, it is best accessed by yacht. Other popular beaches are Myrtos and Loutro Beach which have vibrant reefs with shipwrecks and caves that are great to discover by kayak. If you are a fan of snorkelling or scuba diving, you’ll love to know that Crete is also home to some exotic flora and fauna! If you pass through the shallow end of the waters, you can find sea turtles, monk seals, and if you’re really lucky, even dolphins!
Explore nearby destinations on your private yacht charter
If you have the chance to charter your yacht for longer periods, you can use this time to discover nearby destinations! If you don’t want to travel too far, you can stay in Greece and head towards the nearby archipelago with the Dodecanese Islands. This includes other beautiful and lush islands that are perfect for family holidays such as Rhodes, Tilos, and Karpathos. However, you can also expand your sailing route to include the Cyclades, the Sporades, or the Ionian Islands. The possibilities are endless when it comes to the Greek islands! There is so much rich history and wonderful scenery in the country that you can never be bored. Alternatively, if you would prefer to venture off into other countries, you can see other nearby destinations such as Italy, Malta, or Albania.

What places should I visit during my Crete boat rental?
Crete is the cradle of the Minoan civilization, whose heart and most important place in terms of archaeological wealth is Knossos. Make Heraklion your main base and stroll through the city centre: the colours and aromas of the traditional market will intoxicate you from the first light! Then take a tour of the relics of the city's past and the island's culture: the Palace of Knossos , the Heraklion Fortress , and the archaeological museum are just the beginning.
On the west of the island lies the charming town of Chania . Although it was partially destroyed by bombing during World War II, its beauty still attracts tourists every year. Especially the district of Splantzia , which preserves the ancient atmosphere and spirit of Crete's history to this day, cannot be neglected on your itinerary. You can leave in a boat from the port of Souda to the beautiful beach of Stavros or Réthymnon .
On the east of the island is the town of Agios Nikolaos , famous for its numerous beaches. In the city's centre is the curious Vulisméni Lake , known as "bottomless". The main marina is located to the south of the city, and from there, you can take a nice boat ride to the island of Agioi Pantes .
Where to sail with my boat rental in Crete?
Bay of Balos
This is one of the most beautiful places in Crete and Greece. This cove is called a Cretan paradise for a reason! White sand with a slightly pinkish tinge, unbelievable crystal blue sea... sounds incredible. Consider this bay a must-see on your itinerary because you can't miss it when you travel to Crete! The easiest way to reach it is by boat from the port of Kissamos . By renting a sailboat or catamaran, you can sail from east to west on a real cruise, enjoying the magnificent landscapes of Crete.
Use your yacht charter in Crete to reach the island of Santorini , famous for its beautiful architecture and white houses with blue roofs. Who knows, maybe even Athens or the beautiful cities on the Turkish coast, such as Antalya , Bodrum , or Marmaris , will also catch your eye, and a trip there will not take more than a few days.
The combination of the three seas
If sailing is your true passion, and you dream of great vacations aboard and conquering life on the high seas and are dying to set sail, don't wait another minute and embark with Click&Boat on your coveted cruise through the various Mediterranean seas!
Crete is surrounded by 3 seas (the Ionian Sea to the west, the Aegean Sea to the east and the Sea of Crete to the north of the island), and the Bay of Balos is where they merge. This is what makes Crete's nature surprisingly unusual. Many mountains, rocky coastlines, and long beaches.

Perfection!! Everything was impeccable, the boat, the itinerary, the captain was the best captain we ever had in all countries so courteous, so caring about our family, the details, tending to all out needs in an amazing way. we had an SUP, snorkeling gear, even a sea scooter!! The kids loved it! We had sandwiches, vegetables, snacks, all kind of drinks, and amazing fruits. I would definitely strongly advocate for them. Thank you for a wonderful day captain Harris, and mikalis
An amazing day with Nikos who was a great skipper and hosted us on his beautiful boat. Highlight of the day was letting us sail the boat ourselves under his instructions with no use of the motor boat. An unforgettable experience!
Kriti Star Private cruises to Balos & Gramvousa
Very friendly and easy to book! The swimming spots he took us were wonderful, it was so beautiful to see Balos without having to make the trek on land. Expert navigation from the captain too when the waters got a bit tricky. Wonderful experience!
It was a great trip that our family enjoyed a lot! Ioannis was friendly and professional. We had a blast!
Excess 11 - Sailing Catamaran Brand New in Crete Heraklion
The boat, crew, location and food were all perfect. We had a beautiful day filled of fun and relaxation. The boat was in perfect condition, it had all the extras for a fun day for kids and adults. Loved having coffee on board for our arrival, and lunch was perfect. Thank you for a wonderfully memorable day!
Very pleasant cruising tour. This is not a thrill ride so don't expect fast speeds. Food was excellent and very fresh. Awesome that it was all from his own garden and even the olive oil was from his own olive trees. Snorkeling was really fun with a lot of fish to see. Secluded bays offered refreshing swims in clear, calm water to cool off. Boat was very clean and comfortable. Plenty of beverages available. Would definitely recommend!

How much does it cost to rent a boat in Crete?
Renting a boat in Crete doesn’t have to be expensive. In fact, Greece is one of the most affordable sailing destinations in the Mediterranean.
Renting a sailboat in Greece is one of the cheapest options at an average price of 53 EUR per person per day. A RIB is also relatively cheap at an average price of 93 EUR per person per day. Charterting a catamaran in Greece is a little more expensive at an average price of 150 EUR per person per day. Renting a motorboat in Greece will cost you 190 EUR per person per day on average.
Remember: These are only average prices and you might find boats that are cheaper or more expensive - also depending on the season.
What type of boat is best for sailing in Crete?
It all depends on the type of sailing holiday you would like to experience in Crete. Choose your boat according to the activities you have planned. If you want to discover hidden beaches and bays, you would rent a different type of boat than the one you would choose if you just want to sail across the Mediterranean to feel the wind on your skin.
Rent a catamaran in Crete
Pros of renting a catamaran in Crete
Renting a catamaran in Crete comes with many advantages, including the fact that they are equipped with shallow drafts. This makes them the perfect choice for sailing in shallow waters and closer to the shore in order to reach the most stunning remote beaches.
Another major advantage of renting a catamaran is the fact that they are equipped with both a sail and an engine. This means that you can set sail when the wind is going strong and you can sail naturally, but you also have a plan B in store and can drive along the coast with the engine rather than having to wait for the wind to pick up again when it suddenly stops blowing. You get the best of both worlds!
The fact that catamarans stand on two hulls gives them a lot more stability than other types of boats have. When the winds get a little stronger, you might not feel it as much as on other types of boats, but you might hear the water hitting the bottom of the boat which might cause some annoyance.
A very popular catamaran to rent in Crete is Catamaran Lagoon 400 which is available in the marina of Heraklion . Up to 10 people can sleep on board and a crew is included when renting this boat. Snorkelling and fishing equipment can be found on board for some extra fun activities while sailing around Crete. Head to Kolokytha Beach for a fun snorkelling experience away from the crowds.
Cons of renting a catamaran in Crete
One of the downsides of catamarans can be the fact that they are more spacious than other types of boats. While it is certainly a positive aspect of catamarans, it might cause some issues when trying to find a mooring spot at a marina - especially in the busy summer months. You might not be able to fit your boat in the marinas and have to search for a spot to anchor in a quiet bay.
Charter a catamaran in Crete
Rent a sailboat in Crete
Pros of renting a sailboat in Crete
Charter a sailboat in Crete if you are looking for an adventure. One of the advantages of sailboats is the fact that they are running on wind rather than fuel. So you don’t have to refuel your tank every time you leave the marina. This makes sailboats more environmentally friendly than other types of boats.
One of the most popular sailboats to rent in Crete is Sailboat Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 42I . Up to 7 people fit on board this boat and you can rent it with or without a captain. Keep in mind that it will be more expensive if you hire a captain. The interior is already screaming ‘sailing vacation’. When is your turn?
Cons of renting a sailboat in Crete
One of the downsides of renting a sailboat in Crete is the fact that they are only running on wind. If the wind should suddenly stop blowing, you might get stuck in the middle of the sea and have to wait for the wind to pick up again in order to move forward. This can be a little frustrating.
Another downside of renting a sailboat is the fact that they usually don’t leave a lot of space for sunbathing on deck. Most of the space is necessary to store all the equipment that is needed in order to sail properly and safely.
Rent a speedboat in Crete
Pros of renting a speedboat in Crete
One of the advantages of renting a speedboat in Crete is that speedboats are generally smaller than other types of boats, making them much easier to operate. They are also very easy to operate - even if you are a novice sailor.
Another great thing about speedboats is, as the name suggests, their speed. You can get from A to B in a very short period of time. This makes them the perfect boats to stop by all the spots you want to discover in a short amount of time.
Cons of renting a speedboat in Crete
One of the disadvantages of renting a speedboat in Crete is the fact that they are generally not well-equipped for longer periods of time on the water. It can be fine for a couple days, but not more than that.
Another downside is the fact that they run on fuel. This means that you always have to ensure that they are refueled when leaving the marinas.
Rent a speedboat in Corsica
Rent a motorboat in Crete
Pros of renting a motorboat in Crete
One of the advantages of renting a motorboat in Crete is the speed. Like speedboats, you will be able to get from North to South in no time. You will get to see as much as possible in the shortest amount of time.
Another advantage of chartering a motorboat is the fact that they have a shallow draft. This makes them the perfect boats to sail close to the shore and stop by the most beautiful hidden beaches. Also, unlike sailboats, motorboats don’t require you to store a lot of equipment necessary for sailing on deck. This means that you get to have more space on deck and get to soak up the sun without lying next to necessary sailing equipment. It’s perfect for a relaxing boat holiday in Crete.
One of the most popular motorboats to rent in Crete is Motorboat Catcruiser 45 which is offering free all-inclusive drinks as well as a crew who is accompanying you for the whole trip. Other amenities on board include snorkeling equipment, a SUP and a refrigerator. Up to 10 people can sleep on board, so grab your best friends and head out to explore the Greek island of Crete and its mountainous landscapes.

Charter a luxury yacht in Crete
If you have the money, you should definitely charter a luxury yacht in Crete to experience the life of the rich and famous for a week. Replicate the glitz and glamour for a truly relaxing holiday. Non-EU-residents are not as lucky. They need to ensure that their boat licence fulfills the requirements of a Greek boat licence. If your boat licence has been issued in a language other than English or Greek, you need to bring an official translation of your document in order to be able to rent a boat in Crete.
It is best to carry an International Certificate of Competency or short ICC in order to rent a boat on the island.
Sailing routes in Crete
One of the most popular sailing routes in the Mediterranean is only starting in Crete and taking you to some of the other beautiful Greek islands. You start your sailing adventure in Chania and sail all the way to Santorini.
Day 1 - Sail from Chania, Crete to Milos which can take between 4 and 5 hours depending on the wind conditions, the conditions at sea, etc. It is a wonderful route to discover the Mediterranean sea. In Milos you have to go and see Sarakiniko Beach , a stunning beach made of volcanic rock that is shining white.
Day 2 - Sail from Milos to Sifnos which will only take you about an hour. In Sifnos you can see some of the most beautiful Christian buildings, including the Chrisopigi Monastery on the edge of a cliff.
Day 3 - Sail from Sifnos to Paros . This trip can take you between one and three hours, depending on the conditions at sea and the type of boat you’ve chartered in Crete. In Paros you should visit Paros Park , a breathtaking natural park with stunning sea views, amazing trails to walk along the Northern part of the island and some fantastic beaches to stop by and take a quick swim to cool down.
Day 4 - Sail from Paros to Naxos which is going to take you around half an hour or an hour. It all depends on the type of boat you’re sailing on and the wind and sea conditions. In Naxos you should get your history fix and visit the Temple of Apollo in Portara and the Temple of Demeter . The Faragi Kouros , a huge statue, is also worth a visit.
Day 5 - Sail from Naxos to Ios . This trip can take you 30 minutes or 2 hours, depending on the weather conditions and the capabilities of your boat rental. Ios is not just famous for its stunning beaches like Magganari Beach or Kolitsani , but also as the resting place of Homer. You can visit the Tomb of Homer and get to enjoy the stunning sea views while there.
Day 6 - Sail from Ios to Folegandros , which is most famous for its fascinating rock formations and cliffs. The trip will take you around 1 or 2 hours. Enjoy the views while sailing before visiting some interesting sites like the Church of Panagia or the Chrissospilia Cave .
Day 7 - Sail from Folegandros to Santorini . This is going to take you between 1 or 3 hours depending on your boat and the weather conditions. Santorini is obviously most famous for its white houses and blue rooftops, but there is much more to see. Ancient Thera is one of the most interesting historical sites on the island.
Day 8 - Sail from Santorini back to Crete . This can take you between 2 and 6 hours. If you want to sail for just 7 days, you can also head back to Crete from Folegandros. However, this is going to take you much longer! Keep in mind that you might want to stop along the way.
