Sir Thomas Lipton
Life story of sir thomas lipton, yachting and the america’s cup.
Lipton's charitable work was to catapult him into a whole new world. He was, until this time, a man devoted entirely to work. His friendship with the Prince of Wales, soon to be Edward VII, developed rapidly, strengthened by a passion for the shared interest of yacht racing. He was to be as ambitious a sportsman as he was a business man. His very first racing venture was to compete in the world's most famous yacht race: The America's Cup. Between 1899 and 1930 he challenged five times for the Cup, all in yachts named Shamrock, to honour his Irish lineage and friends at the Royal Ulster Yacht Club.
He never managed to "lift that auld mug - surely the most elusive piece of metal in all the world so far as I am concerned". (Lipton, p241) However, thirty years of chasing the America's Cup brought him 'joy... health and splendid friends' and it also kept him "'young, eager, buoyant and hopeful". (Lipton, p242) He also captured the imagination of the American people. He was presented with a solid gold loving cup and a donors' book in which the flamboyant mayor of New York had written "possibly the world's worst yacht builder but absolutely the world's most cheerful loser". (Crampsey, p133)
Even after the transfer of his headquarters to London, Lipton remained a familiar figure in his native Scotland. He was a frequent visitor to Glasgow for business and pleasure. The Erin was frequently seen cruising in the Clyde - especially during Clyde Yacht Week when one of the Shamrocks usually claimed a trophy. Lipton and yacht racing were so popular, that he even makes an appearance in Neil Munro's Para Handy Tales where, much to the relief of MacPhail and the annoyance of the Captain, Shamrock snatches victory from White Heather. In recognition of his popularity and his contribution to yachting on the Clyde, Lipton was presented with the freedom of Rothesay in June 1931.
The Evolution of Yachting at The America’s Cup Finals

The evolution of yachting will be televised this year—the hydro foiling cats will be bombing around the cans and the J-Class, which competed for the cup throughout the 1930’s, will bring back the spirit of the one design class challenging for the ‘Chart’.
The original winner of The America’s Cup in 1851, “America”, was the boat that gave the trophy its name. It was a 101 foot monohull schooner which carried over 5,400 square feet of sail, and the golden years of the Cup with the J’s.
Technology and development has been a big part of the America’s Cup since the beginning—and this year’s cup is no different as teams search for any advantage to get that extra knot of speed.
In terms of evolution, the boats themselves are controversial, yet innovative, changing the AC Class of boat by two-folds.
In contrast is the America’s Cup Class, a 50 foot long carbon fibre catamaran featuring a wingsail and hydrofoiling technology that enables the boats to fly above the water. This is achieved by the boat being lifted above the water by a carbon fibre fin about the size of a 5’2 fish known as a foil. As the boat speeds up, they lift out of the water.
Using the lift generated by the daggerboards and rudders, the game is to keep the hull above the water line, sailing on a set of carbon-fiber foils that give enough lift to have the boat looking at fly time hitting speeds of up to 50 knots, which has come a long way from the Schooner America, the J Class and the monohulls of the 80’s and 90’s.
The clear waters of Bermuda will have an evolution that, in design, has changed, but with the tactics remaining the same. From the J’s to the AC’s, we are looking at a month’s sailing that for the spectator, professional and novice alike, will showcase an ocean of history in the water.
With the contest for the cup already begun, the challengers have been fighting it out in a one-on-one knockout series of sailing, with it coming down to the playoffs final with Emirates Team New Zealand and ‘The Swedes’ Artemis racing, with helmsman Peter Burling’s Emirates coming out on top.
The teams are now challenging for the oldest trophy in sport, with the team to beat being cup holders ‘the’ Oracle Team USA.

LIPTON CHALLENGES AGAIN
When the Royal Ulster Yacht Club issued its challenge to the New York Yacht Club on behalf of Sir Thomas Lipton on October 2nd, 1900, it could not have been foreseen the turmoil that would ensue in American yachting circles. No real advance had been identified in terms of design such was the money-no-object spirit of the times in sailing for the America’s Cup that had pervaded with the arrival of J.Pierpont Morgan with Columbia and Lipton with Shamrock I.
Indeed, it could be argued that the 1901 racing was a step back to the future although what proceeded the Americans and Irish lining up for the Match that year was to send shockwaves through the sport on the East coast and define the coming era of the America’s Cup for heightened professionalism and dedication.
Two new boats were built with the specific purpose of defending the Cup for the New York Yacht Club – the Constitution and the Independence – but neither was selected, and it was in acrimonious circumstances that the trials of 1901 concluded. The Constitution, built and fitted out entirely at the Herreshoff yard, and owned by a syndicate of prominent New York Yacht Club members was the great hope whilst the Independence, built for Thomas W. Lawson was supposed to bring pride back to the shipyards of Boston and Massachusetts Bay. The fact that both yachts were out-sailed and out-classed by the 1899 defender, Columbia, spoke more to their mismanagement than their inherent performance characteristics. And the competition between the highly proficient and professional Charles Barr, steering Columbia and the inconsistent Uria Rhodes on Constitution intensified through the summer whilst Captain Hank Haff, commanding Independence had a torrid time. Without wishing to take a chance on the destiny of the Cup, the New York Yacht Club committee selected the 1899 defender Columbia, but the ramifications were long.
It is worth dwelling on the outcome of the defence trials before coming to the Cup races themselves and the most authoritative yachting journal of the time, The Rudder, chronicled the difference between Columbia and Constitution with much eloquence, writing in 1901: “To show the difference between the manner in which the two boats were run, it is only necessary to paint two pictures. It was the day of the last trial race, say ten minutes before they doused spinnakers to make the finish. On the Columbia, Barr stood behind the wheel; about him for a space of ten feet the deck was absolutely clear, except just in front sat one man who never moved, and his kept his eyes in front. Then torn to the Constitution; the space about Rhodes looked like the corner of a country main street on a Saturday night. Herreshoff, in his shirt sleeves, stood behind the skipper; to his right was a group of three gentlemen talking, pointing and gesticulating. Two or three other men walked about the decks and in the companion sat two ladies. On one deck, business, silence and order such as should be on a racing yacht; on the other an excursion party.”
“On the Columbia the crew were, for all the movement they made, part of their vessel. When called upon to execute an order they rose, acted and returned to their positions like well-trained parts of a machine. On the Constitution the crew, under the distracting example of people moving about the decks, lolled about uneasily; when they rose to carry out an order they did so in a straggling and ragged manner.”
More importantly, and of historical note were the sage words written in The Rudder by Thomas Fleming Ray, the editor when unbeknown to him, he ushered in the era of high professionalism in the America’s Cup saying: “Yacht racing is a business. To be successful you must cast aside all ulterior considerations, and work only to win. You must have the best sails, no matter who makes them; you must have your decks clear of idlers, no matter whose friends they are; you must have the cleverest skipper and best trained crew, despite the fact that the builder of the boat wants somebody else. You must know no fear and show no favour. The will that moulds men and means to an end regardless of personal ties or business associations is the will needed in such a task. System, discipline, order, the submission of all to purpose. This never can exist under a single and uncontrolled head.”
So, with the American yachting scene set, and with wild accusations flowing about the demise of Herreshoff amid suggestions of sharp business practices around the cloth used for the sails of Constitution, the 1901 America’s Cup was very much a watershed moment for the New York Yacht Club. The public’s interest was waning and their outlook for a successful defence in 1901 was darkening. It was further captured by Thomas Fleming Day in The Rudder in an excoriating article that proclaimed: “For the sake of the sport I would like to see Sir Thomas Lipton win. As it is, the contest is too one-sided, but if the Cup could be passed and re-passed across the ocean it would be better for yachting on both sides.”
Whilst travails and worry continued in America, they perhaps lost sight of the problems that Sir Thomas Lipton was having on the other side of the Atlantic. Having commissioned Shamrock II from the design-board of G.L Watson, after discarding the services of Fife, Lipton gave the designer a: “free hand and the cleverest builders in Britain were employed to construct the vessel where five-pound notes were to be ‘shovelled-on’ to spur all concerned.” Shamrock II was launched from the yard of Messrs. William Denny & Brother at Dumbarton on the River Leven on April 20th 1901 and towed down to Cowes to primarily trial against the defeated Shamrock I of 1899. Early racing was almost too tight to call with each boat taking races as Shamrock II struggled with rig tune and sail set.
A notable incident occurred during the third trial on May 22nd, 1901, whilst King Edward VII was onboard having requested to sail and travelling down to Southampton to be transferred by the steam-yacht Erin to Cowes where Shamrock II lay at anchor. Sailing over the Queen’s Cup course starting at the West Brambles and around the Warner and Lepe buoys, the wind was typical blustery Solent early-summer conditions and under the command of W.G Jameson, the Shamrock II came to the start line when a gust of wind caught her on starboard and, as a London Journal of the time reported, caused an incident which: “made Britain gasp.”
Shamrock II was fully dis-masted in under a minute. Fortunately, the King was sitting at the time of the incident at the top of the companionway, and once the wreckage was cleared and the crew all accounted for and rescued, went aft with a freshly lit cigar to enquire if anyone was hurt. The cause of the accident was said to be the breaking of the eye in the plate into which the bobstay was bolted at the stem and the rig and sails, having been cut away were subsequently salved by divers.
On May 23rd, 1901, Sir Thomas Lipton formally requested an extension from the NYYC of one month from the agreed America’s Cup start date of August 20th and even offered Shamrock I if the club found it: “must adhere to date.” Such was Lipton’s standing that the request was granted without question with much sympathy being passed across the Atlantic. Shamrock II was towed to the Clyde for a new mast and rigging but tongues were wagging with The Yachtsman, a respected British journal opining that: “Unless something is done in the way of alteration of design, we do not think the new boat stands the faintest chance for the Cup.”
Shamrock II was fast-towed by the steam-yacht Erin to New York via the Azores in just 16 days and laid up at Eerie Basin to receive her spars and rigging that were separately delivered by steamer. It gave the American public the chance to see the hull-form of a yacht that had been extensively tank-tested in model form at the Denny facility – a strip tank some 300 metres long and 10 feet deep. G.L. Watson had modelled some nine hull forms and the result was a finer shape, particularly at the bow than the earlier Shamrock I. In trials in American waters, Shamrock II was recorded as tacking in around 12 seconds and holding an upwind speed of 14 knots but this were to prove false data as she never attained such speeds in the Match itself, despite favourable conditions.
On September 24th, 1901, both Columbia and Shamrock II were measured at Eerie Basin showing the American boat to have a length at load on the waterline of 89.77ft as opposed to 89.25ft for the Challenger. Sail area was measured with Shamrock II setting some 14,027 square feet as against Columbia’s 13,211 and ultimately produced a 43 second handicap advantage to the Americans. This was ultimately to be an important margin.
With the spectator fleets manfully corralled by dint of the Order of Congress and patrolled by a fleet of six revenue cutters – the torpedo boats of 1899 were not required this time – the race for the America’s Cup got underway on the 26th September 1901 with some impressive moves in the pre-start. Captain Barr steering Columbia knew that he had met a match in Captain Sycamore, helmsman of Shamrock II but as he had done all summer against the Constitution and the Independence, Barr’s racecraft was to prove mighty.
At the start-line, Columbia secured a weather berth and a 12 second lead, back-drafting the challenger and deadening her progress in the water. As the race unfolded, and the winds began to die from the 12 knots at the start to just 7 knots by the mid-way point, Columbia showed a superior sail plan, deeper in its form and able to power away. However, with the fickle breeze, Shamrock II did manage to hold on and at one point on the second windward leg pass the bow and tack on top of Columbia only to be passed through the lee a few minutes later. By the final turning mark, the wind had shifted south and was dropping dramatically and at 4.40pm the race was declared void with Columbia ahead by over a mile.
The next meeting on September 28th 1901 began in nine knots of breeze and saw one of the greatest pre-starts ever seen as recorded in The Lawson History of the America’s Cup: “The great racing machines were tacked, jibed, and put about as easily as small raters, approaching each other within biscuit-toss, sometimes wearing ship in a complete circle in a diameter that seemed not greater than twice their own length, and moving all the time with the greatest ease and grace, under conditions of sea and wind that afforded an ideal setting for such a picture of modern racing of giant toys on summer seas.”
Shamrock II won the start and with the course being a straight windward-leeward, looked to hold all the advantage. Many boatmen of the day believed that winning the weather position off the line would win the race such was the blanketing effect that these goliath sea birds could throw off on the other, but Captain Barr on Columbia was anything but beaten and threw tack after tack at the Challenger with her well-drilled crew laid on the weather rail whilst Shamrock’s sat to leeward to increase the list.
By the top mark, Shamrock II had done what G.L. Watson, her designer, had hoped for and beaten an American yacht to weather, rounding 39 seconds ahead. If it were time however for celebration, the party would be short lived as Shamrock II luffed once around the mark to keep clear wind before setting spinnaker. Captain Barr was using every tick in his nautical armoury to try and trick the Irish yacht to set its spinnaker first but eventually bore away and set her billowing kite. Captain Sycamore followed suit but the distance that she had gained to weather was detrimental to course distance that now need to be sailed, with every boat-length counting. Columbia held the inside berth advantage and by half-way down the final run, was level with Shamrock II having feint chance of saving her 43 second time deficiency. With the wind dropping significantly, Columbia slipped through. By the finish she was ten lengths up and the record shows a corrected time win of 1 minute and 20 seconds.
After an abandoned race on October 1st, 1901, Sir Thomas Lipton wrote to the NYYC Committee suggesting that racing should take place on every day appropriate thereafter and this was granted in order to expedite the series. The next meeting on October 3rd, 1901, was set in almost perfect conditions with the wind at 10 knots at 10.00am and freshening. The course featured two beam reaches to start, followed by a weather leg and it was Shamrock II with its enormous sail area and innovative bow that seemed to lengthen the waterline in the breeze that not only made the better of the start, but held a lead to the final mark. In conditions that favoured Lipton’s yacht, its failure was in not capitalising on the advantage. Columbia held on for all she was worth, running down a deficit at the first marker buoy of 1 minute and 12 seconds to be just 42 seconds by the turning marker for the final leg.
Columbia’s upwind prowess combined with Captain Barr’s tactical nous saw her tack immediately off to port around the mark, opposing Shamrock II’s insistence on standing on, on the starboard tack. By splitting, Columbia forced a move and with pace she quickly closed the gap ending up on starboard tack to leeward of Shamrock II but able to power through her lee. When the two boats came back on port, having both overstood the finish, Columbia was well to weather and with started sheets they thundered towards the line. The Lawson History records that: “Columbia swept past the old yellow light vessel in a splendid burst of speed. Her buff decks glistened wet with foam and spray, her lee-rail was under pure green brine, and the golden afternoon sun lighted up in strong relief the distended surface of her pure white sails.”
It was 2-0 to the Americans, with the record showing a 2 minute 52 second win and 3 minutes 35 seconds on corrected time. Sir Thomas Lipton expressed keen disappointment in Shamrock II blaming its modelling over its handling by the sailors. The London press described the race as a “Homeric contest” and agreeing that Shamrock II was an “heroic failure”, but Lipton’s superb sailors were anything but quitters.
The final race of October 4th, 1901, was remarkable in the fact that it was the closest ever recorded in America’s Cup history to the date and was only settled on time allowance. Starting under huge clouds of canvas, the race got underway with Columbia obliged to start on the handicap gun which she did so late with Shamrock II following just 17 seconds later and both boats recorded as starting at the same time. Shamrock II with her sail plan advantage quickly passed Columbia and only an early unfortunate drop of her club topsail about a mile from the first turning buoy allowed the American boat to close the gap. At the turn, Shamrock II held a 49 second advantage but on the beat to windward opted not to cover Columbia as she headed inshore in better breeze whilst the Irish held off on port tack heading offshore. It was a first error. Columbia came back on port with better breeze and held the advantage but for the next three tacks it was too close to call between the two boats with either getting ahead as the wind puffed and faded around a 6 knot mean.
As the two Cup boats set up for a final leg to the line, both on starboard tack, some half a mile from the finish and within sight of dozens of steamers and excursionists, it was one of the most thrilling sights of the America’s Cup. The spectators held their breath as the boats thundered along, and with every passing passage of time felt the elation and deflation of their cheered-for boat as it seemingly gained or lost the lead. The Lawson History records that: “Their skippers sailed them as if for life or death, and as they neared the finish no man in the fleet could say which would snatch the wreath of victory.”
At the death, it was Shamrock II that crossed the line just two seconds ahead of Columbia but 41 seconds adrift on handicap. The America’s Cup was once again secure in the New York Yacht Club, but Sir Thomas Lipton was now more determined than ever to consider ways of “lifting the Cup”.
The Beautiful Freak Reliance Defends the America’s Cup in 1903
The beautiful behemoth Reliance handily defended the America’s Cup in 1903, but her freakishly large size caused the contest’s rules on design to change after the race.

The challenge for the America’s Cup that year was issued by British tea magnate Sir Thomas Lipton . He had already challenged America twice since 1899 for the Cup, and he would challenge twice again until 1930.
Lipton, a self-made millionaire, had built a chain of grocery stores in Britain and invented the tea bag. He loved yachting , and he hired Britain’s best yacht designers to build his challengers, all named Shamrock.
Captain Nat
The New York Yacht Club, defender of the Cup, enlisted America’s best yacht designer – and one of the most innovative in history. Nathaniel Greene Herreshoff, or Captain Nat, was born March 18, 1848 in Bristol, R.I. He and his brother J.B. founded the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company. They earned worldwide renown for their fast steam yachts, innovative torpedo boats and superbly crafted sailboats
Captain Nat, then in his 50s, didn’t want to design the 1903 America’s Cup defender. His wife Clara was ill and he suffered from rheumatism. He also hadn’t gotten over the failure of his yacht Constitution to beat Columbia in the 1901 Cup trials.
But the New York Yacht Club persisted. Captain Nat gave in.
He would enjoy another 10 years of the ‘Herreshoff Era’ of racing, from 1890 to 1920.
Herreshoff launched Reliance at Bristol on April 12, 1903. She was the largest single-masted sailboat ever, at 143’, 9” with 16,160 sq. ft. of sails, weighing four tons, from the Lawrence textile mills . Her mast was as tall as a 20-story building. Her spinnaker pole was 84 feet long. It took a crew of 66 to sail her. And yet she was built for speed, so she was light — and unstable.
The Freak Reliance
The Reliance was a freak. A sailing freak. Like all racing yachts, she had one purpose and one purpose alone: to win the America’s Cup.
Yachtsman Cornelius Vanderbilt defended the Reliance from its critics:
Call the boat a freak, anything you like, but we cannot handicap ourselves, even if our boat is only fit for the junk heap the day after the race.
The challenge featured a series of five races in New York Harbor. Hundreds of thousands of spectators streamed into New York for the races, buying tickets on a fleet of excursion steamers. The race was more than a race. It was a matter of national pride.
Reliance won the first three races, the third so decisively that Shamrock III retired.

Lipton, as always, lost graciously. He would go on to lose his next two challenges. In 1930, the American people presented him with a gold cup for his good sportsmanship.
Lipton had no regrets, he said. Yacht racing ‘has kept me young, eager, buoyant and hopeful. It has brought me health and splendid friends.’ (Those friends included King Edward VII and King George V .)
Immediately after Reliance won the race, Nathanael Herreshoff proposed the Universal rating rule to avoid such extreme, dangerous and expensive sailboats. The rule was then accepted.
Reliance went to the scrap heap in 1913. The Herreshoff Marine Museum in Bristol built a one-sixth model of the Reliance .

‘Shamrock V’ Legendary J Class Relaunched

One of the world’s most iconic racing superyachts returns to the water after historic multi-year restoration.
The 1930 America’s Cup challenger Shamrock V , known as ‘The Queen of the J Class’, was relaunched today at Saxon Wharf, Southampton, UK, after the most comprehensive restoration and rebuild of her storied 94-year history.
Racing at the America’s Cup J Class regatta in Bermuda in 2017, Shamrock V sustained significant structural damage and was laid up ashore. Seven years later, following a change of owner and a complete strip down, literally to the last bolt, the work of some of the industry’s best shipwrights, engineers and project teams has restored Shamrock V to concours condition.
Paul Spooner, who led the project team alongside Feargus Bryan, commented: ‘It has been a massive undertaking and a huge privilege to unite extraordinary talents across the Classic and Superyacht communities. We were very fortunate to have a committed and knowledgeable owner who enabled us to fully and correctly restore this vital part of yachting history and prepare her for her next 100 years’.
Chief Shipwright, Giles Brotherton, a veteran of some of the world’s most storied classic restorations added: ‘It is very rare to be able to work on a revival of this scale and ambition. Some of our artisans were using hand tools that were used on Shamrock’s original build. It is without doubt the biggest and arguably the most important yacht restoration in the world today.’
Today’s launch will be followed by re-masting, sea trials, commissioning, sail testing and race training, seeing Shamrock V gracing Solent waters until July, when she will move to the Mediterranean to take part in some informal J Class events in preparation for October’s J Class America’s Cup regatta in Barcelona.

About INEOS Britannia
This is Ainslie’ third attempt to win the Cup for Great Britain, and it’s a team that is all about the tech. Backing from Sir Jim Ratcliffe gives the team access as part of the INEOS Sport Group to Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team , with live data link-ups to the Mercedes Applied Science team in Brackley, as well as working with the INEOS Grenadiers cycling team .
The Formation of INEOS Britannia
The British team was formed in 2014, representing the Royal Yacht Squadron, with Ben Ainslie leading the charge.
After winning the America’s Cup with Oracle Team USA in San Francisco (2013), Ben Ainslie set out to win another, but this time with a British Team. The British Team made it to the semi-final in Bermuda (2017), but were knocked out by Emirates Team New Zealand .
In 2018, the British Team joined forces with British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe and became INEOS Britannia.
The 2024 37th edition of the America’s Cup in Barcelona marks the first time a British team has competed in 3 consecutive America’s Cups since Sir Thomas Lipton and the Royal Ulster YC bids between 1899 to 1930.

The Royal Yacht Squadron
The Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes, Isle of Wight, is a highly prestigious and exclusive yacht club with over 200 years of rich history . They host a wide range of events and races throughout the year, including Cowes Week and the Round the Island Race , as well as marking the finish line for elite offshore competitions like the Ocean Globe Race .
Founded in 1815, the Royal Yacht Squadron, or “The Yacht Club” as it was then known, was situated at Thatched House Tavern in St James’s, London.
The Prince Regent was welcomed as a member in 1817, and in his later ascension to the throne as George IV, Royal was added to the club’s name. The club kept a close association with the Royal Navy, with early honorary members including Nelson’s Captain at Trafalgar, Admiral Sir Thomas Hardy.
The RYS Clubhouse: Cowes Castle
Built in 1539 as part of Henry VIII’s chain of coastal defences, Cowes Castle has a long royal naval history . After being decommissioned in 1855, the Castle was taken over by the Royal Yacht Squadron and became their clubhouse.

Omsk was founded in 1716 when a wooden fort was constructed to house a Cossack unit in the area to protect the expanding Russian frontier from Central Asian nomadic incursions. It served various administrative functions throughout the 1800s and became infamous as a place of exile and incarceration. The city was rundown when selected as a hub for the Trans-Siberian railway in the 1890s. Many international trade companies and foreign consulates relocated here and the remnants of their offices can still be found in the city today.
The mystery of Kolchak’s gold
Omsk became the headquarters of the anti-Bolshevik white army led by Admiral Aleksandr Kolchak in 1918. In late 1918 there was a revolt in the city initiated by a leftist faction (Socialist Revolutionary Party or SPs) with 500 rebel deaths at the hands of Cossacks and Czechoslovak soldiers, a major factor in convincing the SPs to join the Bolsheviks. There is a large Soviet-era monument to the uprising at the corner of Lenina street and Broz Tito street.
Kolchak was entrusted with a large portion of the Tsarist’s gold reserves, yet amazingly lost much of it. Supposedly 250 million rubles were lost (about $8 million at the time). Legend has it that they were buried near the village of Taiga, yet numerous excavations have turned up nothing. The area still attracts the occasional fortune seeker.
Kolchak’s headquarters are located at what is today the Omsk Regional Archives at Broz Tito St., 3. Nothing shows how much times have changed as the imposing Kolchak statue that was unveiled in 2012 around the corner. The statue guards Kolchak restaurant , a four-story culinary complex featuring a steak house, an Irish pub, a Central Asian café and an Italian eatery. Dostoevsky and the Tsar
At 1.15 million people Omsk dwarfs the region’s second largest city, Tara (population 28,000). The city is split by the River Irtysh into two sections (all places of interest are on the right bank) with downtown emanating from the River Om.
Most foreigners have heard of Omsk via writer Fyodor Dostoevsky who spent four years here as a prisoner (1849-1853). He spent most of his time in Omsk in squalor and chains and with no books besides the Bible, however, it left an indelible mark on his memory and influenced his future literary output. There is a statue of the writer in chains grasping a Bible at the corner of Partizanskaya and Spartakovskaya streets, where Dostoevsky undoubtedly stepped many times. A museum dedicated to the author's time in Omsk is located nearby at Dostoevskogo St. 1. The local university is also named for him.

Tarskaya Street is one of the city’s oldest thoroughfares. It features a monument to victims of Stalinist repressions and the Tara gates, originally built in 1792 as one of the four entrances to the Omsk fort. Nearby stands the Assumption Cathedral, one of the largest churches in Siberia. Future Tsar Nicholas II laid the first stone here in 1891 when making his way back to St. Petersburg after his Eastern journey.
In Omsk you are never more than a few steps from the village, made clear when one exits the center to the north, where most houses are wooden and roads unpaved. Stroll along Bulatova and Rabinovicha streets, a well-preserved ensemble of wooden architecture.
Omsk’s cultural heritage
The Pushkin State Library is worth a look with busts of Russian literary figures adorning the front side of the building. At the corner under the big “M” is one of several stations of the never completed Omsk metro. Construction began in 1992, but as of 2014 the project is again dormant due to financing problems.
One of Omsk’s most famous sons is Symbolist painter Mikhail Vrubel (1856-1910). Vrubel ignored contemporary trends and focused on themes from fairy tales, demons and religious subjects and also designed a majolica frieze for the Metropol Hotel in Moscow. Omsk’s Fine Arts Museum is named for him and features a number of his works .

Over the years a number of tourists have tripped over the monument to Stepanych. This bust of a plumber rising from a sewer was the idea of Omsk’s former mayor after a trip to Slovakia in the 1990s. Stepanych has become one of the symbols of the city.
Omsk is a hockey town, with one of the major teams, Avangard , in the KHL, Russia’s premiere professional league. Russian champions on several occasions, check out a match at Omsk Arena. But if you can’t catch a game there’s a large kiosk featuring the team’s merchandise at the airport.
Siberian punk, jazz and the classics
While Omsk may not be on everyone’s radar musically, it does host a musical theater built just after the war. The building on 10 Let Oktyabrya Street is in the form of an enormous sloping grand piano.

Perhaps Russia’s most famous punk band, Grazhdanskaya oborona (Civil Defence), was formed here in 1982. The band was active until 2008 when lead singer Yegor Letov died of heart failure at age 43. Letov is buried at the Staro-Vostochnoe cemetery. A sprawling graveyard with thousands of graves, fans should stop at the administration for help in locating his grave.
In Russia, Omsk is known among the younger, tech-savvy generation primarily because of the “Omsk bird,” also known as Winged Doom. The origin of what became one of Russia’s most ubiquitous memes comes from a painting by German artist Heiko Müller. One day in 2009 an Internet user posted this painting with the line, “Welcome to Omsk,” at the top. Additional versions menace viewers stating, “Don't try to leave Omsk,” and “Omsk is closer than you think.” Like many popular memes on the Internet, this one went viral and has become something like an unofficial symbol of the city.

Omsk Oblast ( Russian : О́мская о́бласть , romanized : Omskaya oblast' ) is a federal subject of Russia (an oblast ), located in southwestern Siberia . The oblast has an area of 139,700 square kilometers (53,900 sq mi) . Its population is 1,977,665 ( 2010 Census ) [9] with the majority, 1.12 million, living in Omsk , the administrative center .

The oblast borders Tyumen Oblast in the north and west, Novosibirsk Oblast and Tomsk Oblast in the east, and Kazakhstan in the south.
Omsk Oblast shares borders with Kazakhstan ( North Kazakhstan Region and Pavlodar Region ) to the south, Tyumen Oblast in the west and Novosibirsk Oblast and Tomsk Oblast in the east. It is included in the Siberian Federal District .
The territory stretches for 600 km (370 mi) from north to south and 300 km (190 mi) from west to east. The main water artery is the Irtysh River and its tributaries the Ishim , Om , Osha , and Tara Rivers. The region is located in the West Siberian Plain , consisting of mostly flat terrain. In the south is the Ishim Plain , gradually turning into steppe, forest and swampy taiga to the north. The soil is sandy and silty. [10] Along the Irtysh River, in t. N. Irtysh region, there is an "oasis" microclimate, with a wooded landscape and gullies. There, the most fertile land in the region can be found. The Omsk region contains many lakes, the largest of which are Tenis -Saltaim, Ik, Ebeyty , Ulzhay and Tobol-Kushly.
The highest elevation in the Omsk region - about 150 m (490 ft) Upland village, the lowest elevation is the water's edge on the Irtysh - 41 metres (135 ft) , near the village of Little Beach. [ clarification needed ]

The oblast has a classic continental climate, with cold, snowy winters and hot, dry summers. Average January temperatures range from −42 to −30 °C (−44 to −22 °F) . Average July temperatures range from 25 to 28 °C (77 to 82 °F) and can reach up to 35 °C (95 °F) and even 40 °C (104 °F) . Annual rainfall averages 300–400 mm (12–16 in) . Sunny days predominate.
The southern plains have notably longer and warmer summers and a delayed onset of freezing temperatures. They are also significantly drier than the northern forests, receiving only 250–300 mm (9.8–11.8 in) precipitation annually. Winters, however, are as severe on the plains as they are further north. Spring rains are rare, but late spring freezes are not. The early part of the summer is frequently dominated by hot, dry southern winds.
As of 1 February 2016 , [ update ] on the territory of the Omsk region, there are 35 areas that have the status of protected areas (PAs), regional and local importance.
Archeological findings indicate that the present day territory of the oblast has been inhabited for the last 14,000 years. Neolithic societies in the area lived by fishing and hunting. About three thousand years ago, pastoralism began to take hold. Ust'-Ishim man , the remains of a man that lived 45,000 years ago, was discovered in Omsk Oblast.
Various Turkic states dominated the area throughout the Medieval era. The most notable of these were the Western Turkic Khaganate and the Siberian Khanate . Siberian Tatars , Mongols , Khanty and Mansi tribes, along with others, inhabited the territory.
The Russian history of Omsk began with the 1584 arrival of a Cossack force under the command of ataman Yermak Timofeyevich , who defeated local rulers and established nominal Russian control of the area. To support further expansion tsars Feodor I and Boris Godunov initiated the construction of fortified settlements and military outposts in the south of Siberia in order to defend their subjects from raiding nomadic tribesmen and to exert authority over local populations, specifically over the tribute-paying Siberian Tatars of The Baraba Lands. The first permanent Russian settlement in the region, the city of Tara , was founded in 1594, soon it began to play an important part in fur trade that connected Russia with Central Asia and China.
In 1716 a fortress was constructed at the confluence of the Om and Irtysh rivers on the orders of sublieutenant Ivan Bugholtz. The fortress would form the nucleus for the development of the future city of Omsk. By the second half of the 18th century, Omsk fortress was the largest building of any kind in the eastern part of Russia.
As Russian settlements continued to spread through the Yenisei , Tobol and Irtysh watersheds in the course of the 18th century, so did the development of the Omsk and the surrounding region. In 1753 a customs post was established to tax goods brought into the city by the ever-increasing trade with Kazakh tribesmen. In 1764, when the Siberian provinces of Russia were organized into two governorates with centers in Irkutsk and Tobolsk , the city of Tara and the fortress of Omsk were assigned to the latter. In 1780, on the orders of Catherine the Great the fortress was transferred to Kolyvan Oblast . By this time Omsk had grown to the size of a small city, however, from 1797 to 1804 it did not possess its own uyezd .
In 1804, the territories surrounding Omsk were organized into the Omsk Okrug . The city rose to prominence when Siberia was once again reorganized in 1822, Omsk became the administrative center of the General Governorate of Eastern Siberia rising above the old center of Siberia, Tobolsk. The new governorate was divided into oblasts around the cities of Omsk, Petropavlovsk, Semipalatinsk and Ust-Kamenogrsk populated by Russian colonists and okrugs populated by Kazakh nomads. In subsequent reforms the name of the Oblast was changed repeatedly to The Oblast of The Siberian Kyrgyz (1854), Akmolinsk Oblast (1868), and Omsk Oblast (1917) before finally reverting to the Omsk Governorate in 1918. The authority of the oblast followed further expansion of the empire to Central Asia and included significant parts of modern-day Kazakhstan .
In the 19th century, Omsk, given its strong system of frontier fortresses, became notorious as a premier destination for political exiles and prisoners from the European part of the Russian Empire. Decembrists , Polish rebels , French prisoners of war and political activists of every stripe found their way to Siberia. Among them was Fyodor Dostoyevsky , who spent four years (1850–1854) at the Omsk prison. [11]
The early nineteenth century also saw the growth of industry in the city and in the rest of the Irtysh basin. The Siberian Cossack Army was headquartered in Omsk after 1808 and contributed to the development of the city, by the beginning of the 20th century the Cossacks were a dominant component in the society of both the city of Omsk and the surrounding lands, having reached a population of 174 thousand and holding title to five million hectares of agricultural land. The 18th and 19th centuries also saw the influx of a significant number of German immigrants both from Russia's Volga Regions and from abroad.
In 1925 the Omsk governorate was dissolved into the newly formed Siberian Krai and again reorganized, this time as an Oblast by order of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee on 7 December 1934. Parts of the Ob-Irtysh Oblast and the West Siberian Krai as well as the southern part of Chelyabinsk Oblast were given over to Omsk. In 1943, Kurgan Oblast created from the western portion of the Chelyabinsk Oblast also got a number of Omsk territories. In 1944, the northern part of the Omsk Oblast along with the districts previously transferred to Kurgan became newly established Tyumen Oblast that included Khanty-Mansi and Yamalo-Nenets autonomous okrugs.
The 1950s saw the creation of the petroleum processing industry, as well as the development of various high-technology facilities that came to define the economy of the Oblast for the remainder of the century.
With the dissolution of the Soviet Union the oblast became part of the newly independent Russian Federation. The independence of Kazakhstan gave Omsk an international border to the south, while continued federal policy aiming to rectify the effects of Stalin era population transfers led to the creation of a national German district in an area with a significant, although not a majority, German population around the town of Azovo . On 19 May 1996 Omsk Oblast signed a power-sharing agreement with the federal government, granting it autonomy. [12] This agreement would be abolished on 21 December 2001. [13]
During the Soviet period, the high authority in the oblast was shared between three persons: The first secretary of the Omsk CPSU Committee (who in reality had the biggest authority), the chairman of the oblast Soviet (legislative power), and the Chairman of the oblast Executive Committee (executive power). Since 1991, CPSU lost all the power, and the head of the Oblast administration, and eventually the governor was appointed/elected alongside elected regional parliament .
The politics in the oblast is governed by the Charter of Omsk Oblast. The laws within the authority of the oblast are passed by the Legislative Assembly of Omsk Oblast which is the legislative (representative) body. The highest executive body is the Omsk Oblast Administration. It also includes the executive bodies of the subdivisions such as districts, and is responsible for the daily administration. The Oblast administration supports the activities of the Governor who is the head of the oblast and acts as guarantor of the observance of the Charter in accordance with the Constitution of Russia .
As of 18 January 2019, the departmental register of registered non-profit organizations of the Office of the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation for the Omsk Oblast contains information on 2537 non-profit organizations, including 1332 public associations (national associations - 60, regional branches of political parties - 46, trade unions - 328, children's and youth public associations - 55), 308 religious organizations, 30 Cossack societies, and 20 public associations of Cossacks. For example, in the Omsk Oblast there are regional branches of the political parties United Russia , A Just Russia , the Communist Party of the Russian Federation , and others. [14]
As of 2008 , [ update ] Omsk Oblast is the 23rd largest economy in Russia, with a gross regional product of 10.2 billion dollars.
The economy of Omsk Oblast is heavily industrial, with well developed, and growing, service and financial sectors. Agriculture represents a smaller, but still significant, portion of the economy.
Economic activity is concentrated in Omsk, with over sixty-six thousand private enterprises registered, ranging from small-scale retailers to billion-dollar manufacturing. [15]
Omsk was ranked by Forbes as the 6th-best city in Russia for business in 2008, an improvement over its 20th-place ranking the previous year. [16]
The oblast and city governments have made efforts to improve the business climate and foster small enterprise through various incentives and government programs designed to ease the bureaucratic red-tape, a notorious feature of Russian business life, and to generate cooperation within the business community. [17]
The bulk of industrial output, as of 2009, is concentrated in food and tobacco processing ($900 million), hydrocarbon processing ($6.7 billion), chemical manufacturing ($500 m), plastics manufacturing ($200 m) and the manufacture of electrical components ($280 m). The remainder of the economy is dominated by the retail sector and agriculture.
The largest industrial enterprises include the aerospace manufacturer Polyot , the Omsk Aggregate Plant, the agricultural manufacturer Sibzavod, Omsk Baranov Motorworks, and Omsktransmash , which manufactures the T-80 main battle tank. Additionally, Omsk Rubber, the Technical Hydrocarbon Plant, Omsk-Polymer and Omsk Hydrocarbon Processing Plant, represent the petroleum and hydrocarbon industry. Omsk Hydrocarbon is one of the most important oil refineries in Russia. [18]
The oblast operates four thermal power plants, which makes it largely self-sufficient from the standpoint of energy generation.
Agricultural production is concentrated in the Isil'rul'skii District and produces wheat, barley, flax, sunflower, potato, various fruits and vegetables as well as meat, poultry and dairy products.
The food processing sector includes several breweries, a distillery and numerous food packaging enterprises.

57,518 people were registered from administrative databases, and could not declare an ethnicity. It is estimated that the proportion of ethnicities in this group is the same as that of the declared group. [26]
According to Russia's 2002 Census , Omsk Oblast has one of the lowest birth rates in Siberia. However, birth rates remain higher than the average in heavily German districts - Azovsky Nemetsky National District (24% German), Moskalensky, Poltavsky (22% Ukrainian & 11% German) and Isilkulsky (8% German), even as significant emigration to Germany acts to reduce the overall birth rate. [27] In 2009, the lowest death rate was recorded for Azovsky German National Raion (9.4 per 1000) and the highest birth rate was recorded for Moskalenskom (17.0 per 1000), Isilkulskom (15.2), Maryanovsky (15.8), Pavlogradski (15.8), Tevrizskom (16.6), Ust-Ishim (15.4) and Sherbakulskom (16.2). Regions with the highest population growth were Moskalensky area (5.5 ppm), Azovsky German National Raion (4.8 ppm), Sherbakulsky (3.8 ppm) and Pavlogradskij (3.2 ppm). [28]
