Sur le lac de Genval, planches et bateaux toutes voiles dehors

Le genval yacht club organise des activités nautiques sur le lac. mais en plus du sport, le club se veut aussi un lieu d'échange, comme en témoignent les activités plus festives proposées au bord du lac..

Le lac de Genval, situé à la frontière entre les communes de Rixensart et d'Overijse, est aujourd'hui un lieu prisé par les promeneurs et les sportifs venant s'essayer au paddle (la planche, pas le petit frère du tennis), pédalo, planche à voile, voilier… Bref, tout engin nautique dépourvu de moteur, règlement oblige. La baignade y est aussi interdite.

Comme beaucoup d'activités en plein air, celles du lac de Genval dépendent du beau temps, et la météo de ces derniers mois n'a pas été clémente. "La saison a mis du temps à se lancer. Ce printemps, la météo était mauvaise, et c'est seulement à la mi-juin qu'on a commencé à bosser , explique Denis Bakelants, gérant du Genval Yacht Club. La pluie n'a pas motivé les gens à venir, mais maintenant, ça commence à reprendre." Les années précédentes, la saison débutait déjà à la mi-mars.

"Généralement, en début de saison, le monde arrive crescendo. Cette année, c'est on-off…" , donc personne, puis tout le monde d'un coup. En effet, les équipes pour les activités nautiques sont composées en fonction de la météo: "Quand les prévisions annoncent du beau temps, l'équipe est pleine et finalement il fait dégueulasse… et quand on annonce mauvais, le soleil se pointe et nous, on se fait déchirer…"

Si les voiles ont mis du temps à sortir, et si les membres ont laissé leurs bateaux à quai jusqu'à tard cette année, Denis est désormais soulagé: la saison démarre enfin.

Denis est arrivé début des années 2000 au Yacht Club en tant que moniteur, avant d'en reprendre la gestion en 2010. Contrairement aux idées reçues, la voile n'est, selon lui, pas un sport réservé aux plus nantis. "Quand je suis arrivé, un stage (d'une semaine) coûtait 175 €. Aujourd'hui c'est toujours le cas, mais on va devoir augmenter un peu à cause de l'inflation. Mais c'est important que la voile reste accessible."

À Genval, tout un chacun peut venir s'essayer aux différents sports nautiques. Pour la voile, il faudra tout de même compter une petite heure de cours particuliers. Il est aussi possible de venir avec son propre équipement, comme des planches de paddle, moyennant un droit de navigation de 10 € et une petite lecture du règlement.

Outre le sport, il est aussi possible de venir au Yacht Club pour l'aspect plus festif, comme faire un barbecue sur une barque au milieu du lac ou encore participer aux "Jeudis d'été", des apéros organisés un jeudi sur deux. "On veut une mixité entre le sport et un côté plus social" , résume Denis.

La villégiature des Bruxellois devenue un lieu sportif et de repos

Le lac de Genval a été créé à la fin du XIXe siècle par l'homme d'affaires Gustave Smets-Mondez. En parallèle de la création du lac, qui était à l'origine un simple étang alimenté par l'Argentine, Gustave Smets-Mondez a assisté au développement de la ligne de chemin de fer Bruxelles-Luxembourg. Il y a vu l'opportunité de faire de l'endroit un lieu de villégiature thermale pour les bourgeois bruxellois, là où, à l'époque, les lieux de villégiature par excellence étaient Spa et Ostende.

L'aménagement des lieux est inspiré du lac du château de Versailles et de celui des Quatre Cantons (Suisse). Encore aujourd'hui, cela se traduit par le style Belle Époque des maisons et le nom de certaines, comme la "villa Guillaume Tell", le héros légendaire suisse.

À présent, le lac de Genval est donc devenu "un lieu de repos et de sport" , conclut Denis, avec ses activités nautiques, ses espaces de détente et ses restaurants.

I'm kind of a bit confused as to why this place has such a terrible rating. My husband and I are staying at treasure island and decided to try out Yacht Club for dinner tonight. The food and service were great. We would dine again if we stayed at treasure island

We tried items on their happy hour menu. Everything is $13. Crispy Calamari - nothing special. The jalapeños give it a little kick -- if you eat one. The lemon aioli just tastes like mayo, and the marinara sauce was fine. Bacon wrapped shrimp - just okay, nothing special. Lobster bisque - bland Steamed clams and mussels - the broth had a little kick to it and was not tasty, and we got like 6 clams and 6 mussels. It came with an "Olive Garden" breadstick Yellowfin tuna poke - this was good! The tuna tasted fresh atop edamame and avocado, and the fried wonton was crispy Crab cake - two small crab cakes. These were okay except they were cold in the middle. Nothing special and not worth $13. So . . . we should have walked a little further and ate at Popeye's.

The Las Vegas Yacht Club opened last November in the space formerly occupied by the Seafood Shack and Mojito Bar at the TI Hotel and Casino. It appears they upgraded the menu, but not much else. The restaurant's décor is the same as the Seafood Shack's. Craig Taylor is the Executive Chef at the TI. Let's be upfront, the Yacht Club isn't a high-end seafood restaurant like Eddie V's, Ocean Prime or Oceanaire. But it does serve delicious comfort food in a casual setting that would appeal to a local family or out-of-towners. The $65 average tab per person, might make sense on the Vegas Strip, but seems a tad high for families. Service is really important to me. It's more than taking our order and checking in. For example, does the server build a relationship with our guests, do they provide outstanding menu knowledge and recommendations. Unfortunately, our Yacht Club server didn't excel in those areas. We had some hits and some misses with our dinner: - The broth for the Saffron Mussels had an odd taste, almost like a low-quality white wine was used - Caesar Salad was awesome, a large portion of romaine that can be shared easily by two or three diners -Sea Scallops with Angel Hair was another large portion, super rich and filling - Fish & Chips is another classic on the Yacht Club menu, with plenty of beer battered cod for the largest appetite - The pan-fried Salmon was dry and bland - Street Carrots is a creative name for a side, but it failed to attract much interest from our group If I make it back, I'd order one of two signatures: Seven Seas (with lobster meat, clams, shrimp, mussels and scallops in a lobster tomato broth) or the Seafood Risotto (clams, shrimp, mussels and scallops).

We had a reservation on Open Table months prior to holiday. Got there and were given a table with a weird configuration. I went to the manager, I believe named Jordan or Julie, and was told that when you booked, you didn't request a particular table, like that's even a thing. She was rude and uncaring. Then we ordered and 3 of the 4 dishes had shrimp in them and each dish tasted funny from the shrimp. He took the shrimp out, waiter took it back to the kitchen. No comment followed and no manager came to apologize or offer an explanation. We continued our meals and ordered 2 deserts which AFTER were complimentary. Still no manager for an explanation. Worse place to eat in Vegas. Definitely not worth the high prices.
