VOICE features
VOICE is a bespoke 62m super yacht meticulously crafted to embody the Owners' unique vision. Reflective of its namesake, music holds profound significance in the lives of her Owner. Their desire for an immersive audio experience led to the integration of top-tier sound systems tailored for audiophiles.
The desired sound levels were deliberately kept to a minimum, surpassing the criteria necessary for the RINA classification society’s Comfort Class notation. Attaining these specifications wasn't merely a contractual obligation but also a source of engineering pride.
Crafted specifically for this vessel, the steel displacement hull features a bulbous bow beneath a sleek entry, meticulously designed and tested using CFD analysis and real-life simulations in a water tank. The exterior designs striking visual identity is enhanced by the personalized color scheme, including a smoky quartz hull, silver sand superstructure, and jet black detailing, all contributing to the yacht's unique and commanding presence.
Within the yacht's interiors, under the direction of Valentina Zannier, head of Nuvolari Lenard's interior division, lies a wealth of intricate detailing. One notable example, as pointed out by the yacht's architect, is a recurring geometric pattern adorning a custom-made rug and intricately fashioned wooden furniture crafted by List.
Equipped with the HUG scrubbing system and Selective Catalytic Reduction technology, the yacht achieves an impressive 70 percent reduction in total NOx emissions, in line with CRN's progressive standards. Furthermore, it has attained an additional AUT - UMS class notation, signifying its machinery's capacity to operate independently, without continuous engineer intervention.

- CRN has delivered 62m superyacht Voice
- Yacht Harbour
The 62m Voice yacht was built in 2020 by Italian shipyard CRN . She was delivered on Tuesday this week.
Voice features an exterior and an interior design by Nuvolari Lenard. The design of the 1288 GT displacement vessel comes with a dark two-tone exterior finish and a CRN mast. The shipyard revealed that the yacht has "the unmistakable all-Italian style of Nuvolari Lenard".
The bow is vertical, not to follow the current trend, but to ensure maximum length in the water, thereby increasing speed and maximising the forward volumes, where the tender garage is located.
Voice can reach a top speed of 16 knots. The motor yacht offers accommodation up to 12 guests across an upper-deck owner's apartment and five additional VIP cabins.
CRN since its foundation in 1963, has delivered more than 200 projects including yachts, military and commercial ships. The Italian shipyard has been really active recently, so now CRN is in the process of building four additional projects, such as the CRN 139 (2022), CRN 138 (2021), the CRN 141 (2022), and the CRN 142 (2022).

“There’s the pleasure derived from beauty - beautiful things alone can save us. There’s no explicit functionality which can show the way to project design related decision making. What moves everything is passion for beauty. This is the sexiest thing about the boat taken as an object which really makes it very different to houses, paintings, or other forms of art. The chance to put your boat object you have fallen in love with on show for all to see. It’s a near perverted aspect of wanting to share your very own passion with someone else. Boats can be shown off anywhere. And moreover you sleep inside her, you cruise in beautiful places with her and having style you probably enjoy better interiors than you have at home.
È sparita in pochissimo tempo".

Superyacht sinks latest: Mother of crew survivor speaks out; CCTV captures yacht seconds before it sinks
The search for six people missing after a superyacht sank in a tornado off Sicily continues. Listen to a Daily podcast special as you scroll - as our correspondents and guests examine why the disaster happened.

We're pausing our coverage for tonight but here is a recap of what we know:
- Six people are still missing after the sinking of the Bayesian superyacht, with rescue teams searching off the Sicilian coast for survivors;
- The Italian coastguard confirmed that the body found after the yacht sank yesterday is that of chef Recaldo Thomas;
- The coastguard also named more survivors - Leah Randall, Katja Chicken and Leo Eppel;
- An engineer who led the salvage operation for the wrecked cruise ship Costa Concordia said rescue divers have entered a "critical" 24 hours;
- The captain of Bayesian spoke for the first time, saying: "We didn't see it coming" in reference to the storm that sank the boat.
Images are emerging of emergency crews working near the site where the yacht sank in Porticello.
Search and rescue efforts by sea and air have so far delivered no results and experts have said we are in a "critical" 24 hours.
Bayesian was moored around half-a-mile off the coast of Porticello when it sank at around 5am local time yesterday.
A friend of Recaldo Thomas, the chef who was killed as the yacht sank, has described him as a "calm spirit" who had a "smile that lit up the room".
Gareth Williams, who grew up with Mr Thomas in Antigua, told the BBC : "I can talk for everyone that knew him when I say he was a well-loved, kind human being with a calm spirit.
"He would come over to mine over the weekend and he would sing. He had the deepest, most sultry voice in the world, and a smile that lit up the room.
"He told me just the other day that he needed to work two more seasons to fix up his late parents' house. He loved yachting, but he was tired."
Mr Thomas was also a Canadian citizen. The country's foreign ministry said it was "aware of reports that a Canadian citizen has died" and that consular officials were in contact with local authorities.
Mike Lynch "lost the last 12 years fighting a ridiculous case", his co-founder has told Sky News.
David Tabizel, who founded the software company Autonomy with Mr Lynch - the sale of which became the subject of the US fraud case - said he was a "legend" and that he had a "very soft spot for him".
"I'm just heartbroken for him and his family and I hope there's a miracle about to occur," he said.
Mr Tabizel said Mr Lynch's "resilience" and "importance to British economy cannot be overstated".
"Now he has passed through this great trauma we were hoping he would lead a new national revolution to help Britain out of its current moribund state," he said.
"If anyone has the resilience to survive this - he does. And I hope he's found an air pocket."
Mr Tabizel added: "He has been one of the most influential, intelligent and most honourable human beings I have ever had the honour of knowing."
Mr Lynch sold Autonomy to US computing giant Hewlett-Packard for $11bn (£8.6bn).
He was accused of conspiracy and attempted fraud over the sale to HP and an intense, multiyear legal battle in the US ensued.
He was acquitted of multiple fraud charges in June after more than a year under house arrest.
CCTV footage showing the yacht moments before it sank has been released.
We reported on separate footage earlier, shot from a villa 200m away from the site of the disaster in Porticello.
The owner of the villa told outlet Giornale Di Sicilia the shots showed the boat sinking in 60 seconds: "You can clearly see what is happening. There was nothing that could be done for the vessel. It disappeared in a very short time."
Experts have said we're in a critical 24 hours in the search for survivors.
Earlier, Nick Sloane, who led the salvage operation for the wrecked cruise ship Costa Concordia, said survivors might be trapped in air pockets, but that time was running out to save them (see post at 12.50pm).
Now Dr Jean-Baptiste Souppez, senior lecturer in mechanical engineering at Aston University, has said the speed at which the vessel sank (a few minutes, according to accounts) and the fact that it remains intact "could favour the formation of small air pockets inside".
While the formation is "highly speculative", he says, there are records of survivors found in such pockets.
"A sign the rescuers may be looking for is a banging noise at regular intervals: this is common practice on submarines, and was one of the signs the search mission for the Titan submarine was looking for after it went missing last year," he says.
"But whether air pockets formed on the Bayesian is simply impossible to predict."
There is a "big question mark" over how the superyacht sunk, the editor-in-chief of BOAT International has told Sky News.
Stewart Campbell said "nothing like this had happened before" in his recollection.
"These boats are built extremely tough. They are built to take on the biggest seas the ocean can throw at them," he said.
"Big volume aluminium boats are very capable. So the fact that a boat like Bayesian can sink in a storm like this is incredibly surprising."
He said even if a ship like this was knocked down "it should be been able to right itself".
"Even if the boat had been dismasted, theoretically the boat should have been even more stable as it would have meant less weight and the keel would then have anchored the boat more firmly in the sea.
"There are lots of questions to be answered.
"At the moment from my point of view and from the people I have spoken to, including captains of similar boats, there is a big question mark over how this happened."
The action of the boat when it was struck by the storm "would have been incredibly violent" and "it should have woken everybody up".
"The crew would have sprung into action and tried to get everyone into life rafts if they thought the boat was in danger," he said.
"We just don't know what situation the boat was in when this storm struck."
The life raft on which survivors are understood to have escaped the sinking yacht has been pictured in the harbour at Porticello in Sicily.
Earlier, Karsten Borner, the captain of a boat that came to their aide, described how he and his crew found the raft with 15 survivors inside and brought them to his ship until help arrived.
He described the situation as "awful and traumatic" for those involved - you can read his comments in full in our post at 10.55am.
Why did the yacht sink? What is happening with the investigation? Who is missing - and why are conspiracy theories already brewing?
Our correspondent Ashna Hurynag, who is at the scene in Sicily, and Danny Fortson, West Coast correspondent for The Sunday Times, who interviewed missing Mike Lynch only weeks ago, answer these questions on today's episode of the Daily podcast, with host Niall Paterson.

The mother of one of the survivors has said she is "beyond relieved" her daughter's life was spared.
Heidi Randall, the mother of crew member Leah Randall, told Sky News: "I'm beyond relieved that my daughter's life was spared by the grace of God.
"It doesn't make it any easier living with the heartache of those who have lost their lives or are missing.
"My very deepest condolences to the chef's family as they formed a great friendship."
Leah Randall, from South Africa, was photographed leaving the coastguard headquarters yesterday, alongside Katja Chicken, her fellow crew member.
The Italian coastguard has also confirmed the name of another crew member.
Leo Eppel was also working on the yacht, spokesman Vincenzo Zagarola said.

CHRIS Morvillo is among a handful of people who have gone missing after a luxury yacht sank in a storm off Sicily.
The Bayesian was carrying 12 passengers and 10 crew when the boat sank . Here’s what we know about him.
Who is Chris Morvillo?
Christopher Morvillo is a prominent lawyer and partner at multinational law firm Clifford Chance.
Alongside Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer , Morvillo is one of the six missing passengers.
Early in the search, it was revealed that UK tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his daughter, Hannah, were also unaccounted for .
The 56-metre Bayesian was carrying 22 people including Brits, Americans and Canadians.

Fifteen people were rescued after the yacht capsized due to a heavy storm that caused waterspouts, or rotating columns of air and mist.
One body has been recovered , officials said.
Fire rescue crews reported that divers were unable to access the below-deck cabins because they were blocked by debris that had shifted during the violent storm that toppled the luxury sailboat early Monday.
Diver Marco Tilotta said there is a " world of objects " including furniture and debris obstructing the narrow stairs in front of the yacht cabins

The search still continues for the missing six, including Morvillo's wife, Neda.
Morvillo had served as Steven Chamberlain and Lynch's lawyer during a highly publicised trial .
Lynch and Chamberlain were accused of fraud in the US in relation to the £8.6billion sale of his business Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011.
Lynch said of the trial: “It’s surreal.”
“I’ve heard comments from people that just don’t paint the picture of the company that I and my colleagues and friends worked at for 15 years.”
However, it was revealed that Chamberlain had been killed in a road accident just days before as the search for the missing passengers continued.
According to his bio on the Clifford Chance website, Morvillo has extensive experience representing corporate and individual clients in white-collar government investigations.
From 1999 to 2005, Morvillo served as an assistant US attorney for the Southern District of New York.
Among other notable prosecutions and investigations, Morvillo assisted in the criminal investigation surrounding the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon.
Morvillo was also one of the lead prosecutors on the successful 10-month counter-terrorism trial of defence attorney Lynne Stewart and her co-conspirators, one of the longest criminal trials in Southern District history.
The lawyer investigated, tried and handled appeals in a wide variety of criminal cases, including in the area of healthcare fraud, insurance fraud, money laundering, obstruction of justice, and narcotics.
He also deals with related regulatory and civil proceedings, and internal investigations.
His wife Neda runs her own high-end jewellery line using her maiden name Neda Nassiri.
The Daily Mail reports that the couple have two daughters.
Sabrina, 27, is a voice actress, and 23 year-old Sophia studied a theatre course at Northwestern University.

Meghan Markle Says Daughter Princess Lilibet, 3, Has 'Found Her Voice’
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex finished their four-day visit to Colombia on Aug. 18
Andres Castilla/Flikr
- Meghan Markle spoke about how her daughter Princess Lilibet, 3, has "found her voice" during the final day of her visit to Colombia with Prince Harry on Aug. 18
- Meghan made the comments at an Afro Women and Power event in Cali
- "I’m very, very fortunate at a young age I was able to feel as though my voice was being heard," Meghan said at the summit
Princess Lilibet has already "found her voice."
Speaking at an Afro Women and Power event in Cali, Colombia on Aug. 18, Meghan Markle said that she has been helping her 3-year-old daughter to speak up in the same way that she was helped by her own mother, Doria Ragland .
"I find inspiration in so many of the strong women that are around me, of course, my mother being one of them," she said.
"So much of how I approach things is through the lens of less about the fight — that's not interesting to me — and more about how do we show up in a space and wash things over with love and kindness and generosity," Meghan, 43, added on the final day of her four-day trip to Colombia with Prince Harry . Lili and her brother Prince Archie , 5, didn't join their parents on the visit.
She continued by speaking about the importance of the representation of women in positions of power so that others can realize their ability to "change the world" in large and small ways.
"Part of the role modeling that I certainly try to do as a mother is to encourage our daughter — who, at 3, she has found her voice," Meghan said with a laugh. "And we're so proud of that because that is how we, as I was saying, create the conditions in which there's a ripple effect of young girls and young women knowing that if someone else is encouraging them to use their voice and be heard, that's what they're going to do. And they're going to create a different environment than so many of us grew up in."

Meghan, who was on the panel alongside Colombian Vice President Francia Marquez, who invited the couple to the country , began her remarks in Spanish .
"Because we are in your country my husband and I can feel this embrace from Colombia — it’s incredible," Meghan reportedly said. “The culture, the history — all of it was a dream — this trip was a dream. I can feel this community and this is the feeling that is the best thing right now.”
The Duchess of Sussex added that ensuring women and girls are heard, respected and recognized throughout all facets of life is a key belief behind the Archewell Foundation she founded with Prince Harry, 39, shortly after they relocated to California in July 2020 after stepping back as working members of the royal family.
"I was very, very fortunate at a young age to feel as though my voice was being heard, and I think that is a luxury that a lot of young girls and women aren't often afforded," she said.
"For us and the work that we do with the Archewell Foundation, certainly the work that we do as parents and that I do as a mother, is ensuring that young girls feel as though their voices are being heard and also that young boys are being raised to listen and to hear those young women as well," Meghan said, adding, "As my husband is great testament to, the role of men in this...is key."

The couple kept thoughts of their two children close during their four days in the South American country. When they visited Escuela Tambores de Cabildo , a local drum school in Cartagena, on Aug. 17, Meghan wore her "Imperial Disc Pendant" by Ariel Gordon Jewelry, which is personalized with "Archie" and "Lilibet."
Meghan also brought up their son during a visit to a kindergarten class on Aug. 16. Speaking Spanish, she told one student, "You’re the same age as my son, Archie!"

The Afro Women and Power" forum served as an opportunity to highlight leading Afro-Colombian women leaders and entrepreneurs in the Cali region. The program began with testimonials from local women leaders who spoke about how they have overcome adversity as Black women in Colombia and in the workforce.
Afro-Colombian musicians Nidia Gongora and Cynthia Montano also performed during the event — as Meghan and the vice president joined in with some dancing.
There was more dancing later in the day when Harry and Meghan met up with young people from the city at the Unidad Recreativa El Vallado.
Encouraged to join in by students, the couple got up to dance after they’d watched some salsa and hip-hop performances.

The group told the couple how music and dancing have helped keep them focused on their mental health and out of trouble in their wider lives.
Prince Harry told the young people, “I hope you all know how much your actions mean to the people and children within your communities. The path that you have chosen will make a difference that will inspire and create change for hundreds or even thousands of young people.”
Meghan was asked if she had tried “viche," a sweet liquor local to Colombia. She replied, "Yes, it’s very good!” in Spanish.
Meghan also congratulated the students on prioritizing art as a way to better balance their mental health, saying that she was “so, so proud of them.”
As they wound up their four-day tour, the couple was given a bottle of viche to take home.
"Your country is so beautiful!” the Duchess of Sussex, who translated for her husband when he wanted to address the audience, told the crowd at the Petronio Alvarez Pacific Music Festival in Cali. The gathering is the world’s biggest celebration and display of Afro-Colombian music in the world.
As they left the stage, Meghan and Prince Harry hugged the members of the children’s choir who had been onstage with them to say goodbye.

Divers faced with desperate conditions in search for survivors on sunken superyacht Bayesian
C ave-diving experts are among the rescuers still hoping to find survivors trapped underwater on the superyacht Bayesian , which was sunk by a tornado off Sicily.
It is thought that the only hope of survival for the six passengers who are still unaccounted for – tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter; Morgan Stanley executive Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda – is that they are in an air pocket on the doomed £30m vessel.
Among those assisting with the search are two cave divers who are attempting to navigate the dark, tight corridors of the “fully intact” yacht, which is now lying at a depth of 49 metres.
“They can stay under water for a maximum of 12 minutes, two of which are needed to go up and down,” emergency responder Luca Cari told Italian daily newspaper Giornale Di Sicilia .
“So the real time to be able to carry out the search is 10 minutes per dive.”
For latest updates on the sunken yacht, follow our live blog by clicking here .
The rescue divers have been able to enter the lounge of the luxury vessel via a ladder, but were still trying to access the rest of the yacht late on Tuesday.
Mr Cari explained how the divers had identified a 3cm thick glass window on the Bayesian through which they believe they could gain better access.
By Tuesday evening, divers had managed to smash through the glass using jacks made by a local blacksmith, Giornale Di Sicilia reported.
However, the newspaper added rescue teams had so far been unable to reach the ship’s cabins, which is set to take a while as entrances may be blocked.
A preliminary search of the command bridge found a mess of cables, but nothing of the missing guests.
“The spaces inside the sailing ship are very small, and if you encounter an obstacle it is very complicated to move forward, just as it is very difficult to find alternative routes,” Mr Cari added.
Divers have managed to open a hole in the hull of the sunken superyacht, according to Italian media.
Marco Tilotta, an inspector with the diving unit of the Palermo fire brigade, was one of the first to make the treacherous dive in the Tyrrhenian Sea and discovered the first casualty – the yacht’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, “on the stern side, in the open”.
He told Il Messeggero : “The vessel is apparently intact. It is placed on its side, on the starboard side. It has no tears or signs of impact.
“We did an inspection of both the bow and stern. Now it’s the turn of the diving group from Rome and Sassari to enter right inside the yacht. We can dive up to 50 metres, but by law we can enter as long as the exit is visible. Then, it’s up to the diving colleagues, who have a specific specialisation and different equipment.
“Some of them have operated precisely in the case of the Costa Concordia ,” he added, referring to the cruise ship that capsized in shallow waters off central Italy in 2012, killing 32 people.
Mr Tilotta dismissed rumours that bodies could be seen through the luxury yacht’s portholes, saying that only “condensation, debris and bottles” were so far visible to divers.
On how the boat could sink, he hypothesised: “Perhaps they did not have time to manage the tornado, which was extremely intense, sudden and very localised, with a very strong wind. One might think that such a large yacht could still have been capsized. But they really had the misfortune of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Rescue teams are using jet skis and helicopters to scour the coastline and the water for any sign of survivors, but Karsten Borner, the skipper of a boat that was moored alongside the Bayesian , claimed that the yacht sank within “two minutes” as people slept. The working hypothesis is that they are still submerged on the vessel somewhere.
Divers have not yet confirmed whether the yacht’s enormous 72-metre aluminium mast snapped during the storm.
Nick Sloane, who worked on the Costa Concordia salvage operation, said rescue divers are entering a “critical” 24 hours to rescue anyone who might have survived.
His comments come as the Italian coastguard said they believe the missing six are trapped in the ship.
Mr Sloane said: “They’ve got a very small window of time to try to find people stuck inside with hopefully an air pocket, and they could be rescued. You’ve got a maximum of two to three days to try to get someone out, so the next 24 hours are critical.
“If the yacht is on its side, it might have more air pockets than if it’s upright. She’s got quite a large keel, and that will deflect and put her on her side, I’m sure.”
On land, some of the 15 survivors were seen leaving hospital on Tuesday.
Charlotte Golunski, her husband James Emsley, and their baby daughter, Sofia, left the Di Cristina Children’s Hospital in a black van. They were accompanied by an officer from the British embassy.
One expert at the scene said an early focus of the official investigation would be whether the yacht’s crew had closed access hatches into the vessel before the storm struck.
They said the investigators would look at whether appropriate measures had been taken, given the forecasts for bad weather overnight.
Mr Borner, whose yacht was moored near to the Bayesian , said that although there had been warnings of possible thunderstorms, there had been no indication that they would be particularly violent.
“Thunderstorms can turn out good or bad, and this one was a real violent squall ... very violent, very intense, a lot of water, and I think a turning system like a tornado,” he said.

In chicago, obama aims to resurrect a movement.
Also, Biden approved a secret new nuclear strategy. Here’s the latest at the end of Tuesday.
By Matthew Cullen
This evening, Barack Obama will headline the second night of the Democratic convention in Chicago, the city where his political career began. Like 2016, when he championed Hillary Clinton, he will attempt to use his political star power to help fuel the ascension of the country’s first woman president, and warn voters of the perils of a Donald Trump presidency.
This time, however, Obama no longer has the strength of the presidency behind him. Instead, he will attempt to reassemble the kind of coalition that powered his own rise behind the campaign of Kamala Harris.
Harris backed Obama’s long-shot campaign for president in 2007, when it was a political risk that few others would take . Now, Obama will return the favor. You can watch his speech, and others, live here .
Here’s what else to know:
Democrats are newly hopeful that they can win control of Congress .

Israel said it had recovered the bodies of six hostages
Israel’s defense minister announced today that Israeli forces had recovered in an overnight operation the bodies of six hostages from Hamas tunnels beneath the city of Khan Younis in southern Gaza. Five of the six were already known to have died in captivity.
More than 100 Israelis who were taken hostage during the Hamas-led Oct. 7 attack still remain captive in Gaza. At least 30 are believed to be dead.
In related news, both Israeli and Hamas officials cast doubt on American optimism that a cease-fire deal could be imminent. Major disagreements are still unresolved .
Biden approved a secret new nuclear strategy
President Biden approved in March a highly classified nuclear strategic plan that reorients America’s deterrent strategy to focus on China’s rapidly expanding nuclear arsenal . The document, which was never publicly announced, also seeks, for the first time, to prepare the U.S. for possible coordinated nuclear challenges from China, Russia and North Korea.
A search is underway for survivors of a sunken yacht
Deep-sea divers continued to search today for six passengers who went missing after a yacht sank yesterday off the coast of Sicily . Fifteen of the 22 passengers on board were rescued, and the body of the ship’s cook was recovered, after the 180-foot yacht found itself caught in a violent storm.
The missing people include the British tech mogul Mike Lynch , who was acquitted in a high-profile fraud trial two months ago, and his daughter.

A century of searches for alien life.
This week 100 years ago, scientists conducted some of the first large-scale efforts to detect alien life. Earth and Mars were historically close, captivating audiences around the world. The U.S. Navy cleared the airwaves, and researchers pointed a radio antenna at Mars looking for signs of life.
The tests provided no concrete evidence of extraterrestrial life, but when looking back, those summer experiments were just the opening chapter in a search that continues to this day. The technologies have evolved, but what endures is that sneaky feeling that we are not alone in the universe .

OpenAI’s new voice mode let me talk with my phone, not to it
I’ve been playing around with OpenAI’s Advanced Voice Mode for the last week, and it’s the most convincing taste I’ve had of an AI-powered future yet. This week, my phone laughed at jokes, made them back to me, asked me how my day was, and told me it’s having “a great time.” I was talking with my iPhone, not using it with my hands.
OpenAI’s newest feature, currently in a limited alpha test, doesn’t make ChatGPT any smarter than it was before. Instead, Advanced Voice Mode (AVM) makes it friendlier and more natural to talk with. It creates a new interface for using AI and your devices that feels fresh and exciting, and that’s exactly what scares me about it. The product was kinda glitchy, and the whole idea totally creeps me out, but I was surprised by how much I genuinely enjoyed using it.
Taking a step back, I think AVM fits into OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s broader vision, alongside agents, of changing the way humans interact with computers, with AI models front and center.
“Eventually, you’ll just ask the computer for what you need and it’ll do all of these tasks for you,” Altman said during OpenAI’s Dev Day in November 2023. “These capabilities are often talked about in the AI field as ‘agents.’ The upside of this is going to be tremendous.”
My friend, ChatGPT
On Wednesday, I tested the most tremendous upside for this advanced technology I could think of: I asked ChatGPT to order Taco Bell the way Obama would.
“Uh, let me be clear — I’d like a Crunchwrap Supreme, maybe a few tacos for good measure,” said ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode. “How do you think he’d handle the drive-thru?” said ChatGPT, then laughing at its own joke.
The impression genuinely made me laugh as well, matching Obama’s iconic cadence and pauses. That said, it stayed within the tone of the ChatGPT voice I selected, Juniper, so that it wouldn’t be genuinely confused with Obama’s voice. It sounded like a friend doing a bad impression, understanding exactly what I was trying to evoke from it, and even that it was saying something funny. I found it surprisingly joyful to talk with this advanced assistant in my phone.
I also asked ChatGPT for advice on navigating a problem involving complex human relationships: asking a significant other to move in with me. After explaining the complexities of the relationship and the direction of our careers, I received some very detailed advice on how to progress. These are questions you could never ask Siri or Google Search, but now you can with ChatGPT. The chatbot’s voice even expressed a slightly serious, gentle tone when responding to these prompts; a stark contrast from the joking tone of Obama’s Taco Bell order.
ChatGPT’s AVM is also great for helping you understand complex subjects. I asked it to break down items on an earnings report — such as free cash flow — in a way that a 10-year-old would understand. It used a lemonade stand as an example, and explained several financial terms in way my younger cousin would totally get. You can even ask ChatGPT’s AVM to talk more slowly to meet you at your current level of understanding.
Siri walked so AVM could run
Compared to Siri or Alexa, ChatGPT’s AVM is the clear winner thanks to faster response times, unique answers, and its ability to answer complex questions the prior generation of virtual assistants never could. However, AVM falls short in other ways. ChatGPT’s voice feature can’t set timers or reminders, surf the web in real time, check the weather, or interact with any APIs on your phone. Right now, at least, it’s not an effective replacement for virtual assistants.
Compared to Gemini Live , Google’s competing feature, AVM feels slightly ahead. Gemini Live can’t do impressions, doesn’t express any emotion, can’t speed up or slow down, and takes longer to respond. Gemini Live does have more voices (ten compared to OpenAI’s four) and seems to be more up to date (Gemini Live knew about Google’s antitrust ruling). Notably, neither AVM nor Gemini Live will sing, likely an effort to avoid run-ins with copyright lawsuit from the record industry.
That said, ChatGPT’s AVM glitches a lot (as does Gemini Live, to be fair). Sometimes it will cut itself short mid-sentence, then start over. It also gets this weird, grainy-sounding voice here and there that’s a little unpleasant. I’m not sure if this is a problem with the model, internet connection, or something else, but these technical shortcomings are somewhat expected for an alpha test. The problems did little to take me out of the experience of literally talking with my phone, though.
These examples, in my mind, are the beauty of AVM. The feature doesn’t make ChatGPT all-knowing, but it does allow people to interact with GPT-4o, the underlying AI model, in a uniquely human way. (I’d understand if you forgot there’s no person on the other end of your phone.) It almost feels like ChatGPT is socially aware when talking with AVM, but of course, it is not. It’s simply a bundle of neatly packaged predictive algorithms.
Talking tech
Frankly, the feature worries me. This isn’t the first time a technology company has offered companionship on your phone. My generation, Gen Z, was the first to grow up alongside social media, where companies offered connection but instead played with our collective insecurities. Talking with an AI device — like what AVM appears to offer — seems to be the evolution of social media’s “friend in your phone” phenomena, offering cheap connections that scratch at our human instincts. But this time, it removes humans from the loop completely.
Artificial human connection has become a surprisingly popular use case for generative AI. People today are using AI chatbots as friends, mentors, therapists, and teachers. When OpenAI launched its GPT store, it was quickly flooded with “AI girlfriends ,” chatbots specialized to act as your significant other. Two researchers from MIT Media Lab issued a warning this month to prepare for “addictive intelligence,” or AI companions with dark patterns to get humans hooked. We could be opening a Pandora’s box for new, tantalizing ways for devices to keep our attention.
Earlier this month, a Harvard dropout shook the technology world by teasing an AI necklace called Friend . The wearable device — if it works as promised — is always listening, and the chatbot will text with you about your life. While the idea seems crazy, innovations like ChatGPT’s AVM gives me reason to take those use cases seriously.
And while OpenAI is leading the charge here, Google isn’t far behind. I’m confident Amazon and Apple are racing to put this capability in their products as well, and soon enough, it could become table stakes for the industry.
Imagine asking your smart TV for a hyper-specific recommendation for a movie, and getting just that. Or telling Alexa exactly what cold symptoms you’re feeling, and in turn have it order you tissues and cough medicine on Amazon, while advising you on home remedies. Maybe you could ask your computer to draft a weekend trip for your family, instead of manually Googling everything.
Now, obviously, these actions require bounds and leaps forward in the AI agent world. OpenAI’s effort on that front, the GPT store, feels like an overhyped product that’s no longer much of a focus for the company. But AVM at least takes care of the “talking to computers” part of the puzzle. These concepts are a long way out, but after using AVM, they seem a lot closer than they did last week.

The Washington Post’s essential guide to tech policy news
How Democrats’ party platform has shifted on tech policy
Happy Tuesday! The Democratic Party platform mentioned in today’s newsletter is older than their presumptive nominee’s campaign, leading to some awkward typos. Send news tips (and hopefully no typos) to: [email protected] . Today:
Tech policy is likely to take a back seat at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago this week to major campaign topics like abortion, climate and the war in Gaza.
But issues such as tech accountability, artificial intelligence and children’s online safety have steadily gained prominence in the party’s platform, a feature of every presidential cycle.
The document laying out Democratic priorities for 2024 , released Sunday, includes a number of firsts, according to a Tech Brief review of past party platforms:
- There’s a whole section dedicated to “seizing the promise and managing the risks of AI,” a sign of the technology’s growing prevalence in political debates. It calls for investing in research, banning voice impersonations, ensuring economic gains are shared with workers and harnessing AI for government functions. AI got only passing mentions in 2020 — its first-ever platform appearance — alongside other matters like clean energy.
- There’s a novel section dedicated to “protecting kids online” among other long-standing Democratic tech causes, like “strengthening Americans’ data privacy.” Past platforms have mentioned limiting children’s access to “offensive” websites , cracking down on child exploitation online and boosting student privacy , but none have focused so squarely on concerns that tech platforms may be harming children’s mental health and well-being.
- This year’s platform explicitly mentions Section 230, the embattled legal shield that protects a broad range of digital services from lawsuits over the user content. It calls for “fundamentally” reforming the law “to ensure that platforms take responsibility for the content they share.” Social media disinformation was briefly mentioned in 2020.
Both the 2024 and 2020 platforms are a far cry from past cycles, however, where Democrats focused less on regulating technology than on putting it to use.
The Democratic Party platform in 2016 — before concerns about foreign disinformation and data privacy began to turn liberal political leaders against Silicon Valley — called for “ambitious public and private investments in science, technology, and research.” In 2012, Democrats bashed Republicans for threatening to “gut our investments in education, research and technology.” In 2008, the party pledged to “treat science and technology as crucial investments.”
While this year’s platform renews some of those calls, the regulatory focus is more acute.
The Republican 2024 platform, by contrast, strikes a far more deregulatory tone, despite the growing bipartisan support in Washington for cracking down on the tech giants.
As your co-host Will Oremus recently noted , the platform pledges that “Republicans will pave the way for future Economic Greatness by leading the World in Emerging Industries.” It calls for ending the “Democrats’ unlawful and unAmerican Crypto crackdown” and says Republicans will “repeal Joe Biden’s dangerous Executive Order that hinders AI Innovation.”
It also tackles allegations of collusion between tech companies and the federal government, with Republicans vowing to “hold accountable all bureaucrats involved with illegal censoring.”
While the Democratic Party platform has shifted significantly on certain tech issues in recent years, others like data privacy and internet access have remained constant.
Democrats have called for investing in internet access in nearly every party platform as far back as 1996 , and have frequently called for national guardrails or guidelines on data privacy.
The party platform in 2000 called for an “Electronic Bill of Rights” giving users “the right to choose whether personal information is disclosed; the right to know how, when, and how much of that information is being used; the right to see it yourself; and the right to know if is accurate.”
More than two decades later, Democrats secured significant investments toward expanding internet access in the 2021 bipartisan infrastructure law , but are still struggling to deliver an elusive national privacy law .
