What’s inside Azimut’s brand-new Magellano 30M

When Azimut put together the package for its latest addition to the Magellano line of Crossovers, the key ambition was to create something sustainable and modern that could comfortably go the distance. The 29.7-metre Magellano 30M ticks all of these boxes and is now the proud flagship of the Italian builder’s Magellano fleet.

The design comes from Ken Freivokh and Vincenzo De Cotiis, with Azimut drawing inspiration from the retro look of long-range trawler yachts and adding a modern and contemporary twist. The result is a timeless yacht that speaks to experienced owners who love elegance and steer away from the mainstream.

Azimut first developed this ‘crossover’ concept in 2007 and here, we find out more about the revolutionary features the builder and designers equipped the Magellano 30M with.

Sustainable cruising

Azimut is committed to reducing emissions and has established a line of Low Emission Yachts which now includes a remarkable 50% of the builder’s models. These yachts have 20% fewer emissions compared to boats with traditional hard chine hulls travelling at the most frequently set speeds.

Part of the Low Emissions range, the Magellano 30M’s Dual Mode hull helps reduce the yacht’s emissions output by up to 20%, as does the optional Zero Emissions Hotel Mode package and 100 kW/h lithium batteries. With this package, owners and their guests can stay at anchor in silence and emit zero emissions for up to four hours during the day and eight hours at night.

Main deck living

As with most elements on board the Magellano 30M, the sizes of the various living areas are above average for a yacht of this size. One of the standout features is the run of unbroken windows which run from the forward to the aft of the main deck, affording 270-degree views from the lounge.

A design seen for the first time on a yacht this size, the seamless windows are made possible thanks to Azimut’s design approach to keep a low profile engine ventilation trunk. Even in the smaller spaces towards the stern, this affords a larger set of windows and to further maximise the views from the main deck, Vincenzo De Cotiis designed the furnishings to all have a low profile.

Also on the main deck is the decorative central bar cleverly placed to separate the living and dining area. From here, guests can seamlessly reach the exterior Infinity Terrace to lounge on the three sofas and enjoy unbeatable views through the transparent parapet. On the bow, the seating area and sunpads with typical irregular shapes, and eventually a second arrangement with a whirlpool.

Distinctive style and features

Once on board, prospective buyers and guests may notice the small design details that make the Magellano 30M unique, such as the decorative lamps that have been designed to mimic elements of the exterior design’s louvres. Other features include the upholstered cushions that follow the sea-inspired colour palette of blues and teal, whereas artistic fibreglass accents can be found on the cabinet tops, the wall stairs and the coffee tables.

As a key construction material for Azimut, fibreglass has been used by De Cotiis to create an interior aesthetic on board the Magellano 30M in unexpected laminated formats injected with powders and colours.

On the upper deck, the furniture in the skylounge often features sleek and flowing lines reminiscent of the sea, such as the side unit that appears to seamlessly flow into the exterior. Separated from the skylounge, the wheelhouse and a nearby outdoor aft terrace includes a sheltered dining area, an American-style bar and a sunpad/lounge area.

Spacious staterooms

Within the yacht’s three decks lie five spacious staterooms for guests, as well as three crew cabins. The owner’s cabin is located across the full beam on the main deck. Walking into this suite, an owner will pass through the private lobby area featuring mirror-clad cupboards and marble-framed portholes and into the main area, which is surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows and with a green-blue velvet ceiling that complements the selection of warm and sophisticated fabrics. In the room, the gaze is caught by a vanity desk and a smoked glass door leading to the en-suite bathroom.

On the lower deck, the two VIP suites and two guest cabins are decorated in a similar style. The crew quarters forward are connected to the galley and contain three cabins and three bathrooms, plus a large mess area. Remarkably wide in space, the crew area provides the crew with the comfort needed on any length of cruise.

Designed for comfort

Azimut intended for the Magellano 30M to appeal to owners who require a boat that can take them to a wider range of cruising grounds in complete comfort. The way to achieve this was for Azimut to recruit hull designer P.L. Ausonio Naval Architecture to create the Dual Mode double chine hull which, compared with traditional hard chine hulls, ensures smoother entry into the water and is efficient and stable even in rough seas. Other key advantages of the hull design are the higher level of safety and easier management, together with the lower environmental impact.

Sunken Superyacht Likely to Cost Insurers at Least $150 Million, Experts Say

Insurers of the Bayesian superyacht that sank this month, killing tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and six others, could be on the hook for at least $150 million, according to the first estimates by industry experts.

The British-flagged 56-meter-long (184-foot-long) yacht, which the experts estimated cost around $40 million, capsized and went down on Aug. 19 within minutes of being hit by a pre-dawn storm while anchored off northern Sicily.

The superyacht’s hull was insured against physical damage by yacht insurance provider OMAC and a consortium of insurers including Travelers Cos. Inc., Navium Marine, and Convex, Reuters reported last week.

Yacht Insurer OMAC Is Hull Carrier for Yacht Sunk Off Sicily, Sources Say

Its protection and indemnity (P&I) insurance, which typically covers third-party liability claims including for environmental damage, injury and death, was provided by British Marine.

The hull was likely insured for around $40 million, while the P&I cover would be larger, insurance sources said.

“Our understanding is that the cost of the boat was between $40 and $50 million, so the limit of the hull & machinery policy was probably around those values,” said Marcos Alvarez, managing director, global financial institution ratings at Morningstar DBRS.

The P&I policy would likely be “several multiples” of the hull policy, or $200-300 million, Alvarez added, noting it would also likely cover liability payments even if the captain or crew are found to be negligent.

Prosecutors in the town of Termini Imerese, near Palermo, are investigating the captain and two other crew members. An investigation does not imply guilt or mean formal charges will follow. Prosecutors have said the probe would take time and require salvaging the wreck.

Oscar Seikaly, CEO of broker NSI Insurance Group, that provides yacht insurance, estimated the hull value at $40-70 million, but said P&I cover might not total more than $100 million.

P&I insurance would also cover recovery of the Bayesian, said Francesco Dubbioso, country manager for Italy for insurer Alta Signa Europe, who estimated the superyacht’s value at $30 million to $40 million.

Reuters is the first to report the potential insurance costs. OMAC, Travelers and Navium Marine did not immediately respond to Reuters’ for comment. Convex declined to comment.

The Bayesian disaster, which has puzzled experts who said the boat would have been built to withstand a severe storm, adds to recent woes for yacht insurers, who have faced a raft of hurricane losses in the past few years.

Premium rates have risen by four to five times in the past couple of years in parts of the U.S. and the Caribbean, and yacht insurers have cut the amount of cover they provide because of the risks, Seikaly said.

As a result, insurers have increased rates and re-evaluated their guidelines and risk appetite, according to industry experts.

As well as hurricanes, insured losses have mostly stemmed from severe storms, floods, and other weather events in North America, the Caribbean, and Europe, according to a report by broker Marsh.

Seikaly said four clients had last week been ready to buy boats but changed their minds because of the high cost of insurance.

Climate change was also likely to add to yacht insurers’ worries, Seikaly added, as it throws up more unexpected events.

“Whoever thought a storm in the Mediterranean in the month of August is going to sink a ship?”

Dramatic footage shows couple rescued during storm on 40ft yacht

This is the moment police saved a terrified couple after an unexpected storm hit their 40ft yacht off the Essex coast.

Roy Harris and his partner Caroline Wilson were sailing in their yacht, the Samphire, when a storm took them by surprise.

Mr Harris and his partner had been sailing back to the River Crouch in Essex from Kent’s Isle of Sheppey last Sunday when an unforecasted storm damaged their yacht, which began taking on water.

After the yacht became damaged Mr Harris sent out a distress call requesting emergency assistance.

Essex Police’s Marine Unit was scrambled and found the couple near the Gunfleet Sands off-shore windfarm, four miles off Clacton.

Officers rescued the couple and brought both them and their yacht back to shore.

Sergeant Alex Southgate, PC John Perry and special constable Scott Mccabe were on Operation Wave-Breaker patrols in the force’s rib, Sentinel, when they picked up the distress call and rushed out to the Samphire.

Working with the Dover Coastguard Operations Centre, they located the yacht and rescued the distressed couple.

Mr Harris heaped praise on Essex Police’s maritime unit for saving their lives and admitted he wouldn’t have sailed had he known they would have hit a storm.

‘When Alex leapt onto the boat, touched my arm and said, ‘You’re safe now’, it was such a comfort,’ Mr Harris said. ‘I had been scared for my life. The officers should be recognised for their bravery – they don’t just nick criminals, they save people’s lives.

‘We sailed for six to seven hours in good conditions but then the water started whipping up and, when we turned into the Crouch, the wind caught the tender (dinghy) on the front of Samphire, the jib sheet broke, the ropes got tangled and water started pouring through the hatch.

‘I became exhausted very quickly and sent a PAN-PAN. I didn’t want to call for assistance because the airwaves were busy but I had no choice.

‘The Essex Police Marine Unit turned up out of the blue – I wasn’t expecting them at all. I can’t express my gratitude and appreciation enough. I feel like my life has been saved.’

Sgt Southgate added that the storm saw waves crashing over the Samphire, making their approach dangerous as it was a very windy day.

He added: ‘PC Perry’s skill and judgement at the helm enabled him to get Sentinel safely alongside.He timed everything perfectly with the wave movement and the rising and falling of the yacht to allow me to safely cross over and board the yacht.

‘Having done this, I was able to check the crew and ascertain that the skipper was suffering from severe sea sickness and was in a state of shock.

‘Once we’d checked everything over, I was able to take control of the yacht and steer it to the safety of Brightlingsea Harbour.

‘It’s great to know everyone’s got each other’s back at sea.’

Due to the stormy conditions and the Samphire’s damaged sail, the journey to shore took more than two hours on rough seas instead of the 45 minutes the trip would take in normal conditions.

Sgt Southgate added: ‘Thankfully, we were out on Operation Wave-Breaker patrols in the area that day and were able to locate Mr Harris and his partner in time.’

Essex Police’s Marine Unit runs Operation Wave-Breaker between April and September each year to tackle anti-social behaviour and promote water safety, mounting high-visibility patrols along the Essex coastline to keep those in the water safe.

An American researcher drowns after a Viking replica ship sinks off Norway's coast

A historic journey ended in tragedy this week when a Viking replica ship capsized off the coast of Norway, killing an American archaeologist who was part of its international crew.

The six-person team had been piloting the open wooden ship, named Naddodd, on a roughly 1,000-mile trip from the Faroe Islands to Trondheim, Norway.

"This expedition, honoring the Viking navigator Naddodd, aims to preserve Viking culture and navigational skills for future generations," Sail2North expeditions, which organized the voyage, said in an Instagram post in May.

The team — made up of four Swiss, one Faroese and one American — departed on Saturday from Suðuroy, the southernmost of the 18 Faroe Islands, for what was expected to be a several-day journey.

But on Tuesday evening, met with stronger-than-expected winds and high waves, it capsized off the Norwegian coastal town of Stad.

The Norwegian Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) told CNN that the boat sent out a distress signal at around 5:45 p.m. local time, but when rescuers arrived, crew members signaled that they were safe.

They issued another distress call around 8 p.m. local time, at which point local civilian boats got to the scene and saw the ship had capsized. Five members of the crew managed to board an inflatable life raft and were airlifted to safety within an hour, the JRCC said, but one person was trapped beneath the boat.

Emergency responders battled tough conditions, including 40-knot winds and 16-foot waves, according to a video posted to social media by Norway’s Sea Rescue Society.

The following morning, once conditions improved, rescuers found a body beneath the capsized boat.

On Friday, Sail2North identified the victim as 29-year-old Karla Dana, whom it had previously described as "the youngest member of our crew and embodies both the curiosity of a field researcher and the boldness of an adventurer."

Dana, an archaeologist and field researcher, had worked in a number of countries, from Costa Rica to Germany to Morocco to Taiwan, according to her LinkedIn page. She was a member of the prestigious Explorers Club , and was pursuing a master's degree in archaeology at the University of the Highlands and Islands in Scotland.

In a joint statement shared with Sail2North, Dana's sister and her fiancé said she "tackled every adventure with a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye."

"She always made life look easy," Alejandra Dana and Grant McDaniel wrote. "She created a light that illuminated everyone around her everywhere she went. If you ever had the opportunity to know her, consider yourself one of the luckiest people on this planet."

Dana had shared on LinkedIn earlier this year that she was looking forward to participating in the Viking expedition.

"Thrilled to be a part of this crew, fearlessly embarking on this Nordic voyage on a Viking ship replica across the North Sea, pushing through physical and mental limits to sail into history," Dana wrote.

Dana also authored several posts for the expedition's blog, which is now password-protected.

"It's hard to keep excitement from turning into fear when you see those waves casually tossing around huge modern boats like toys," she wrote in a post published Wednesday, according to the BBC . "But there's a wild beauty in the North Sea, a reminder of nature's raw power, and I feel incredibly lucky to be part of this adventure."

Authorities believe a strong wave was likely responsible for the capsizing, which they are viewing as a "tragic accident" rather than a criminal matter, according to the Associated Press .

Sail2North said on Friday that its crew was made up of "highly experienced explorers who undertook extensive training" and "took every precaution to ensure their safety."

The other crew members include the 56-year-old captain and expedition leader , a 54-year-old artist and seaman who holds a Guinness World Record for rowing across two oceans in the same year, a 37-year-old extreme sports aficionado , a 41-year-old photographer and a 50-year-old engineer .

"Despite their diligent efforts and adherence to these measures, the outcome was unforeseen and deeply upsetting," it said, adding it is committed to supporting Dana's family and honoring her legacy.

A spokesperson with a public relations firm representing the organization told NPR over email that the rest of the crew is traveling home to be with their families and "continues to receive support from a dedicated care team." It anticipates providing further updates next week.
