Henderson 30 is built for haste

Glenn Henderson never would have dreamed of what he started when he agreed to design a racing boat for a cabinet maker from Trinidad.
"When things got slow at his shop, he'd have his employees work on it," Henderson explained. "I went down to check on the progress and was amazed at how well the boat was coming along. I said: "You should be a boat builder.' "
Paul Amon, the cabinet maker, was taken aback by Henderson's suggestion.
"He said: "I'd love to, but I don't know how,' " Henderson recalled. "So I told him that I'd show him how.' "
The St. Petersburg boat designer helped Amon set up a shop in Port-of-Spain, and a year later SOCA (for Southern Caribbean) Sailboats began shipping the first Henderson 30s to the United States.
"We geared the boat toward the dedicated racer," said Henderson, who has a record of designing some of the fastest boats on the water. "It is a small boat that is proving as fast as a lot of the larger boats."
The Henderson 30 turned a lot of heads at the Sail Expo '97 in Atlantic City this month.
Cruising World and Sailing World, two of the nation's leading sailing magazines, picked the Henderson 30 as their "Sportboat of the Year." The award, chosen by an independent panel of judges, is one of the industry's highest honors.
"We couldn't be happier," Henderson said. "It was great to get that kind of recognition."
Henderson, 44, learned yacht design through a correspondence course while cruising around the Caribbean and Pacific.
"It was one way to convince my parents that I was doing something with my life while I was sailing around all over," he said.
He started small but soon developed a passion for sleek monohulls. Promotional materials for the Henderson 30 say simply: "Exceptionally fast."
Henderson designs have won their respective classes at Key West Race Week for four years in a row. The Henderson 30 is an evolution of those previously successful models.
"We were anxious to get down there this year and see what the boat can do," Henderson said before leaving for the races, which began Monday. "We think we'll hold our own."
Yachting Magazine's Key West Race Week is the largest winter regatta in the Northern Hemisphere and a magnet for the world's best sailors.
With a record fleet of more than 270 boats in attendance, this year's event is a veritable who's who in racing. The field includes 35 foreign entries from 16 countries, including New Zealand's Russell Coutts, winner of the America's Cup, and Australian America's Cup skipper and international match racer Peter Gilmour.
"I have five of the new 30s and some of the older 33s and 25s, and they are all doing well," Henderson said Tuesday. "Yesterday we had a clean sweep in all classes."
The conditions have varied, from light wind Monday to 10 to 15 knots Tuesday.
"The boat is performing well under all conditions," he said. "One of the skippers only had the boat for a week, which didn't give him much time to get dialed in, and he still won."
When racing finishes today, it will be interesting to see how the Henderson 30 stacks up against Melges 30, Henderson's chief competition.
"My boats are easily 25 to 35 percent less expensive than comparable boats," Henderson said. "And right now we are selling them as fast as we can build them, which is about two a month."
A fully rigged _ including sails, electronics and trailer _ Henderson 30 costs about $90,000. The base boat price is $68,500.
Of course, you could always get Henderson to design your boat for you and build it in your own shop. You never know what you might start.
