New Horizon 65 Power Cat: A Blend of Luxury, Space and Performance

I thought I’d take a quick tour of the new Horizon 65 Power Catamaran during the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, where it was just launched. Then I realized there’s no such thing as a quick tour of this boat. It’s huge. It’s luxurious. It has beautiful woodwork – as in the curved railing on the stairs from the salon to the skylounge; it’s like a work of art. You don’t just glance at it and look away. You want to get up close and personal.

I forgot about the quick tour and settled in to enjoy this new cat, hull number one of Horizon’s 65 PC series, a boat that combines the best aspects of a high-end motoryacht with the stability, efficiency, performance – and space – of a large cruising catamaran. Horizon builds its boats per the owners’ specifications. The 65 comes with either four en suite staterooms (two with king berth, two with queens), or three en suite staterooms with crew’s quarters. The twin hulls provide enough space so that these are all large, comfortable and filled with light from hullside windows.

And this cat performs. Powered by standard twin 850-hp CAT diesels, it tops out at 26-plus knots, and has a cruising speed of 22 knots. Range at cruising speed is 500 nm.

Stuart Hegerstrom, the co-founder of The PowerCat Company, which distributes Horizon power cats, said the hull design is the result of long-term research and tank testing. “We are in the enviable position of being at the leading edge of the power catamaran revolution,” he said. The symmetrical, semi-displacement hull was designed by Lavranos Marine Design of New Zealand, and it has a sophisticated planing wedge that provides a stable, soft and level ride, even in rough conditions.

The first thing you notice when you climb on the new Horizon is the cockpit: It’s huge (the boat has a 24’ 6” beam) and it’s luxurious enough to be at home on a megayacht. There’s a curved settee across the transom, a high-gloss centered dining table, a wet bar and fridge, and enough space to hold a crowd. Indeed, at a media event there I counted 21 people in the cockpit, and there was room to spare.

Horizon customizes the interiors to fit the owner’s wishes. The wife of this boat’s owner (it’s his third Horizon) is a chef, so the galley, with counterspace that stretched on forever, is dominant in the salon. Up top, the skylounge (the boat also comes in a plain flybridge configuration) also is huge. Twin Stidd helm chairs are forward, then there’s another wet bar with stools to port, plus a day head aft; a large L-shaped settee is aft to starboard. The boat deck all the way aft is large enough for a  good-sized dinghy and any assortment of water toys.

The 65 is built for owner/operators, liveaboards or the charter trade. Richard Ford, the other co-founder of the Powercat Company, said “the PC 65 allows you to own a boat with larger engines, more fuel for longer-range cruising, and ticks the box of a well-appointed fourth cabin. For owners who choose to put their PC 65 into our charter program, it also offers comfortable crew accommodations.”

Horizon offers a management program for owners who want to put their boat in charter when they’re not using it. Part of the charter program is a try-before-you-buy offer, Ford said, where a potential customer can charter the boat for about 1 percent of its price before he makes a final decision. The base price of the new 65, Ford said, is about $3.9 million. The charter price for a week is $35,000. “We’ve sold so many yachts to people who charter before they buy,” he said. The Horizon power cat fleet ranges from 52 to 74 feet.

Described as a floating haven by Cosmopolitan, the multihull has an impressive interior volume of 500 GT and offers nearly 6,500 square feet of deck space. The living quarters are replete with “state-of-the-art amenities and luxurious finishes,” according to the yard.

The spacious layout includes four VIP guest cabins, one owner’s suite with a private terrace, three crew cabins, and a captain’s cabin. The guest accommodation is spread across the lower and main decks, while the owner’s cabin can be positioned on either the main deck or the bridge deck. The crew quarters are located on the lower deck, along with the crew mess, galley, and laundry.

The 125 offers more than just a place to sleep, of course. The main deck is home to a large living room with a TV and game area, while the upper deck is outfitted with a giant dining area and bar. A second bar and a gym can be found on the lower deck. Alfresco lounges are positioned forward and aft, while a helipad sits on the uppermost deck.

One of the standout features of the 125 is the beach club. The innovative platform is fitted with expandable terraces that open directly over the water to transform the stern into what Cosmopolitan calls “a private waterfront resort.” The sprawling space, which affords guests direct and easy access to the sea, can be used for sunbathing, swimming, or sundowners.

NEW HORIZONS 3 is presented primarily as a sailing catamaran. The yacht layout radiates from the main saloon, which connects to the aft deck. The aft deck features a variety of seating areas and that's where most of the meals are served. The immersive cabins are located in the 2 massive hulls. While her mind and spirit were with teaching and helping those in need, her heart remained at sea. In her late twenties, she made the decision to change direction in life. With initial knowledge and experience coming from her upbringing, she devoted all her resources to obtain the necessary professional certifications and build miles in the high seas. Her certifications include RYA Yacht Master Ocean, ENG1, STCW 95’, RYA Gmdss, powerboat license, Greek Seamsn Book, Greek Offshore Sailing license, PADI Certified, RYA A’Aids Certificate, A’Aids and CPR. As a Greek woman, with the added training to tend to persons in need, she is warm hearted, care taking and authentically hospitable. Son of a proud fisherman & great seaman he often joined his dad fishing on his boat. He has sailed both with his brother and sister whom are professional skippers, whereas he then turned his attention to the culinary arts. He also has experience in customer service, waitressing, bartender/barista and of course cooking. As a character he is warmhearted with a great sense of humor. He specializes in Mediterranean, Italian cuisine including Comfort food and Sushi. Most expenses are deducted from an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), a fund that is added on top of the charter price. The expenses, such as provisioning, fuel, marina fees, are deducted from the APA. The APA is based on the price of the yacht and ranges from 15% (crewed sailing yachts) to 30% (motor yachts with higher fuel consumption). You can actively control these expenses in your preference sheet (local vs. imported beverages) and by choice of itinerary (distances traveled). Horizon yachts update regarding covid-19.

In light of the rapidly evolving situation surrounding the novel coronavirus COVID-19, Horizon Yachts is implementing several precautionary measures out of an abundance of caution for our clients and employees.

HORIZON YACHTS HEADQUARTERS

Thanks to the extremely rapid response and safety protocols implemented by the Taiwanese government at the onset of the coronavirus outbreak, the Horizon Yachts headquarters and shipyards in Kaohsiung are able to continue business operations as normal.

HORIZON YACHT USA OFFICE

Following local government guidelines, Horizon Yachts USA has resumed regular office hours in our North Palm Beach location. We strongly encourage appointments for any in-person office visits and require all visitors to abide by local mandates currently in effect. Boat showings and sea trials in the Fort Lauderdale office will continue by appointment.

The health and safety of our entire Horizon family, from our owners and their families to our staff and friends, remains our top priority. We will continue to closely monitor the coronavirus situation and remain committed to mitigating risk wherever possible. We look forward to welcoming you when our events and operations resume as normal!

The Powercat Company was founded in 2009, when company CEO Richard Ford forged a relationship with the renown production boat yard, Horizon Yachts in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Over the past decade, the range has grown to include the PC52, PC60, PC68 and a fully custom PC74. Richard and his team work closely with Horizon Yachts to design and produce these magnificently appointed PowerCats. Horizon operates at the cutting edge of technology and is considered one of the premier boat builders in the world.

The management and build team at Horizon are second to none. Their attention to detail and customer service has been an uncommon luxury.  I was in direct contact with the build team and project managers throughout. The Horizon team is talented, gracious, hardworking and diligent.  The continuous stream of performance throughout the build was astonishing to witness and be a part of.  Friendships and loyalty run deep at Horizon.

The Powercat Company has continually kept the owners connected with annual rendezvous and we all feel a special bond and enjoy sharing our adventures. As owners we excitedly bring others aboard to witness the glorious fit & finish and just stepping aboard allows you to make that dream a reality.

Although we had previously owned a Horizon Powercat we had never built a boat from scratch. The US and Taiwan Horizon teams were very patient, professional and talented. They guided us through the build process and the myriad of details and decisions that needed to be made. The result is a one of a kind, high quality, beautiful yacht of our dreams.
