Articles Charter Yachts With Chase Boats: What Are They And Why Should You Charter One?

Discover how the modern chase boat elevates your yachting experience, blending speed with luxury for unforgettable experiences.

Gone are the days when a yacht tender’s sole purpose was to ferry guests ashore or assist with day-to-day operational tasks, often at the mercy of the elements and with limited capacity. In a dynamic shift towards opulence and efficiency, the yachting community is witnessing the rise of the chase tender – a vessel that transcends the conventional, marrying speed with luxury.

The chase boat, a term once reserved for speed boats trailing regatta yachts, has evolved into an indispensable feature of the modern superyacht. These vessels, ranging in length from 9 to 20 metres, boast customisation levels that would make any luxury enthusiast’s heart flutter. From plush accommodations and cutting-edge technology to impressive cruising capabilities and top speeds, chase tenders are now a symbol of the avant-garde in yachting. Chartering superyachts with chase boats enhances your luxury vacation, offering elegant access to hard-to-reach destinations in comfort and style. These boats extend the luxury of the main yacht, providing efficient transportation and effortless exploration, elevating the entire charter experience. In rough order of importance, the performance of a RC yacht is a function of the following parameters.  It is interesting to note that, of all the major performance factors, only the beam of the hull has been left free by the IOM class rules.  It is therefore primarily differing beams, and positions of maximum beam, which currently distinguish the different IOM designs.

Mono/multi-hull  yes Mono-hull
Sail area yes  3 rigs only
"A" approx 6000 sq cm
"B" approx 4100 sq cm
"C" approx 2700 sq cm
Bulb draft yes  420mm max
Ballast ratio yes  62.5% max (2500g bulb max)
Hull length yes  1000mm
Sail aspect ratio  yes "A" rig approx 4.8
Displacement  yes 4000g minimum
Rig plan  yes Bermuda sloop, 7/8 fractional rig
Beam  no

Hull materials  yes Wood, glass fibre, resin
Sail materials no
Sail construction  yes "Soft" sails
Limits on panels, seams, reinforcements, battens, etc
Bulb materials yes Lead
Spar materials yes  Wood, aluminium
Fin, rudder no
Radio control  yes 2 channels
Rig construction yes Limits on shrouds, spreaders, stays, gooseneck, kicking strap, etc
Rig materials yes Steel wire, polymer

IOM success

Where might we go from here.

My first thought was to simplify the measurement of an IOM, and thus to simplify the class rules.  After a couple of years of trying to simplify the rules, I realised they were about as simple as they could possibly be and still achieve a "home-build one-design".  [Yes, indeed!  For those doubters out there, I invite you to have a go yourselves at simplifying the IOM rules and still end up with essentially the same boat.  Jan always reminds me that the apparently "simple" IOM class is achieved by "complex" rules.  There seems to be something of an inverse relationship between the "simplicity" of a class and "complexity" of the rules.]  The idea, of course, is to maximise the appeal of the class to the club skipper, to encourage its increased adoption in countries where it has not yet achieved a significant position, and to minimise regulatory and measurement problems and overhead.  I now think that the IOM class association should introduce an IOM design which is a strict one-design hard-chine hull (the Boxkite is on offer from Graham Bantock) with materials restricted to wood only in both hull and appendages.  This kind of IOM would use "normal" measured IOM rigs and sails, but ball-raced goosenecks or jib swivels would not be permitted.  Using an idea of Charlie Coventry, whenever this kind of design races with other IOMs, the other IOMs would have 2 points added to their score in every race of that event.  We might call this kind of IOM the BOM -- the Box One Metre and provide it with its own class rules.

Following this idea, and taking it one step further, is to introduce a "manufacturer" IOM.  This design would consist of a complete kit of materials and fittings, needing only radio control to go racing.  Its rules would be very simple -- you can use only what is in the kit, and you have to use it the way the kit instructions say.  This would be the MOM class, and it would have its own class rules.

My second thought a while ago was to improve the standard of sailing at IOM events.  We now have umpiring at International events, and this I think is an excellent development.  So my second thought now is to give experimenters and tinkerers a class to play in as well -- a "Marblehead" IOM, if you like.  So I think the IOM class association should introduce a kind of One Metre, where there are no restrictions on materials or fittings, while keeping the "normal" IOM length, weight, and overall draught limits for a mono-hull, and the "normal" IOM dimensions for the sails.  Everything else is "free".  Extending Charlie's idea, every such "unlimited" One Metre would have 1 point added to its score when racing.  We might call this kind of One Metre the FOM -- the Free One Metre, and again provide it with its own class rules.

While the BOM and MOM could measure as an IOM, the FOM obviously would not.  The FOM's attraction is that it conforms to the IOM "core" idea -- a minimum displacement in a one metre length with standard size sails -- while allowing itchy fingers and enquiring minds to enjoy freedom...  Neither the BOM, MOM, nor the FOM would be "International" classes, but who knows what time might bring us if boats were built and raced in these classes around the world?  It might be worth being clear that none of these ideas actually affect the IOM class and the IOM class rules -- these continue exactly as they are.  If you are interested in reviewing and commenting upon the proposed BOM, FOM, and MOM class rules, e-mail me and I can send you a document.

Click the picture to get to the boat's page The IOM Class The International One Metre class was created by Jan Dejmo, with the support of Graham Bantock and the Permanent Committee of the ISAF-Radio Sailing Division, and adopted by ISAF-RSD in 1988. The intent was to pull together a variety of "One metre" class rules from different countries, and provide for a common, restricted, inexpensive international class of stable, easily-built designs. The result is the most popular RC racing yacht class in the world. The class has enjoyed such success because competitive IOMs can be built by an ordinary modeller at home, and due to the class restrictions competitive boats remain competitive for a number of years. IOM rules The performance of a RC yacht depends on hull lenght, beam, displacement, sail area, bulb draft, ballast ratio and rig plan. The only parameter than can be freely changed is the beam, all others are restricted by the IOM class rules. Therefore it is primarily differing beams and positions of maximum beam, which distinguish the different IOM designs. In addition to performance factors, the class rules explicitly restrict certain materials and construction methods in order to keep the class inexpensive and able to be built by an amateur builder. Radio control is restricted to two channels. Appendages and sails can be made of any material. A competitive boat can be built at home.

A welcome from the IOM ICA Executive Committee

It is my honour as one of the youngest IOMICA Executive members to address you on behalf of our newly elected Executive Committee. Like you, my passion and commitment for this brilliant global class have only strengthened with my growing participation. It is fitting having this address come from one of our youngest members, as more than 50% of our electorate is new to the Executive Board. So, to initiate this address, I would simply like to start by pausing to thank each and every one of you. Thank you for your support and participation in a radio sailing class that has origins dating back to 1958. What an accomplishment! This lengthy tradition  has produced some amazing sailboat designs and memorable events year after year. The shared passion for IOM has generated a  global camaraderie  that unites us all. Recognizing this, we would like to acknowledge some remarkable individuals for their stalwart commitment and personal sacrifice in promoting our IOM Class and the infrastructure behind it.

We must congratulate Mr. Fred Rocha for his eight years of service as the IOM ICA Chairman and acknowledge everything he accomplished. His perpetual enthusiasm   and  inclusivity  are traits that have greatly benefitted our class. He aspired to improve both our internal and external communication, promote the development of our class in new territories, and openly embrace new concepts and ideas. Fred was very generous with his time and support of all our organizational requirements, and worked tirelessly in this pursuit. Congratulations also need to be extended to our newly elected IOM ICA Chairman, Mr. Olivier Cohen. Additional changes in the Executive resulted in the position VC – Technical is going from Mr. Jeff Byerley to Mr. Robert Grubiša, VC – InfoComms passes from Mr. Pedro Egea to Josip Marasović, and the position of Treasurer formally transferring from Mr. David Turton to Mr. Sean Wallis. Pedro Egea deserves special recognition, as he’s tirelessly served our group with IT and “common sense” support for now eleven years — you are a genuine rockstar!! VC Measurement position is vacant, but we wanted also to congratulate Mr. Lawrie Neish, a true veteran who was helping us for around 11 years!! Gentlemen, you all deserve our heartfelt thanks for your service, and be assured we will raise a glass on your behalf.

As COVID continues to be a present challenge for all of us, I’d like to conclude this greeting with a note of  enthusiasm .  Always remember why the IOM Class is held in such high esteem in so many different countries,  surviving the test of time!  No matter how technologically advanced and exceptional IOM sailboats become in future, we will always rely on an overwhelming and continued desire to explore all facets and possibilities to improve performance and everyone’s experience in the end.  We need to continue to push our limits in all sectors of this class, and convey that information in an  open  and  democratic  fashion. This voice needs to be expressed beyond just our annual vote, but vocalized at every race, regatta, start, and buoy rounding, and literally every metre moving forward. Whether you are sailing at a top international regatta or having a twilight club race with friends, you are all part of this active global  IOM family . We are all facing challenges and uncertainty in our daily lives, but we do not have to question our passion and commitment to IOM. Through your individual activities and support, each of you is responsible for helping make this class what it is now and will ultimately become. Our growth and transformation evolve only when you  participate ,  experiment , and continue to  explore , so your engagement is crucial to our success in the future. We look forward to seeing you at future regattas, active in our forums and chats, social media and in photos. The year 2021 is at the very end, but we are just getting started, so let us all continue our story  together .

Chase Boats

Jump to our Top 4 Chase Boats for 2024

Creating a sense of drama not always associated with other types of tenders, the quintessential chase boat is central to a superyacht’s inventory.

Able to largely operate independently by “chasing” the mothership, a chase boat has traditionally been too big to live onboard and has therefore been towed rather than stowed.

Often owing styling to its mothership, a superyacht chase boat marries agility and seaworthiness with luxury and grandeur.

In an era of superyacht volume and range being larger than ever, the chase boat is no longer an isolated category and now means different things in different circumstances.

For many of the largest yachts (80m+), garage space is often dedicated to an array of custom tenders, while for many ‘smaller’ boats, a conventional chase tender either transported or on tow remains an indispensable solution.

How big are chase boats?

Chase boats are typically in the region of 8-20m.

Can a RIB be a chase boat?

Yes — Rigid Inflatables Boats are frequently used as chase boats. Where they are often less beguiling in design, they make up for in all-around versatility.

Does a limousine tender fit the bill?

Whilst many limousines offer a dry and luxurious ride with a fully enclosed cabin, they are not ideal for towing.

Thanks to their low profile, they are generally a great candidate for stowing in a superyacht garage. Moreover, they are mostly limited to guest transfer as opposed to the relative versatility of a conventional chase boat that suits other daytime activities.

Do chase boats have a dedicated captain?

Often, yes – especially where chase boats are operated completely independently of the mothership.

Is a shadow vessel a chase boat?

In theory, a shadow vessel is a chase boat, but not in the traditional sense.

Arguably embodying everything you could ever need in a stand-alone chase boat, the only major drawback is its size.

A conventional chase boat, often called a day boat, typically grants easy access to marinas and shallower areas. While our ROAM Shadow has a draft of just 1.7m, the ROAM 10 or our Beachlander would take you to shore.

Characteristics of a chase boat

A well-proportioned cabin.

In most cases, the cabin on a chase boat is forward of the helm (aft—the shallowest part of the boat—is generally reserved for a roomy swim platform).

Occupying the entire forward area maximises space to house a combined bedroom/lounge, fully equipped head with a shower, and a compact galley. This seamless integration of essential living spaces ensures a cosy yet spacious retreat away from the elements. Perfect for guests seeking a little peace and quiet!

An adaptable layout

As a dynamic platform for adventure and leisure away from the mothership, guests often spend many hours on a chase boat.

Typically catering for up to sixteen guests in close proximity away from the privacy of the mothership, chase boats need to excel in versatility.

Seamless transitions from water sports to food service, hot sun to wet weather, and guest transfers to overnight stays are essential considerations in their design.

The interior of a guest cabin on a small boat

Ingenious toy storage

Adventure and entertainment are at the heart of the chase boat experience, granting guests the closest access to utopian water sports locations.

Facilitated by innovative storage solutions for several select water toys, the savviest chase boats include storage within side doors, bow lockers, deck hatches and on T-Tops. Occasionally a chase boat will include a small crane for deploying heavier toys stowed on the deck.

Ample power

A chase boat is defined not just by its luxury and versatility but also by its power and agility.

Engineered for those who demand performance, chase boats usually boast impressive horsepower, typically starting from around 600 hp and soaring to over 2,000.

This power ensures swift, responsive navigation, enabling quick location changes or a rapid return to the mothership.

IMG_6609.jpg

Vickers RC Sailing build processes are well refined and thought out.

Our boats are light, stiff and clever,  keeping to a simple and effective philosophy around detailing

The V11 design is a hull, foils and bulb package to compliment the full range of conditions experienced in RC Sailing. The hull design has full volume forward and features the familiar chines and tumblehome of the modern IOM for reduced weight and windage, as well as good tracking characteristics. The V11 features our peaked style foredeck for efficient water shedding when buried downwind and a geometrically strong shape for the forestay and mast ram areas.

Foils are slippery and strategically positioned with the rig to balance the yacht. The V11s forgiving balance through the wind range, allows the skipper to focus on the race at hand, and not rely on micro steering to maintain a consistent VMG.

IOM Reports 13 Dead, 14 Missing in Latest Yemen Shipwreck Disaster

chase iom yacht

The recent shipwreck off the coast of Yemen brings to light the danger of normalizing migration tragedies. Photo: IOM/Monica Chiriac

Ta’iz, 25 August  – Thirteen people have tragically lost their lives and 14 others remain missing after a migrant boat capsized off the coast of Yemen’s Ta’iz governorate on Tuesday (20/08). The vessel, which departed from Djibouti carrying 25 Ethiopian migrants along with two Yemeni nationals, sank near the Dubab district in Bani Al-Hakam sub-district, according to field reports from the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Among the deceased are 11 men and two women. The bodies of the deceased were recovered along the shores of Bab-al Mandab near Al-Shura in the Dubab district. Search operations are ongoing in hopes of locating the remaining missing migrants and the Yemeni captain and his assistant. Despite exhaustive efforts, the cause of the shipwreck remains unclear at this stage.

“This latest tragedy is a stark reminder of the perils faced by migrants on this route,” said Matt Huber, Acting Chief of Mission for IOM in Yemen. “Every life lost in these dangerous waters is one too many, and it is imperative that we do not normalize these devastating losses and instead work collectively to ensure that migrants are protected and supported throughout their journeys. Our thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives, and we are committed to continuing our efforts to prevent such incidents and protect vulnerable migrants.”

Despite repeated warnings and ongoing interventions, the waters off Yemen continue to claim lives at an alarming rate. The capsizing in Dubab, following similar tragic shipwrecks in both June and July, is yet another devastating reminder of the extreme dangers of this migration route and the reliance on smuggling networks. Vulnerable migrants are often pushed into perilous conditions by smugglers as they attempt to flee desperate circumstances in search of safety and opportunity in the Gulf states.

The migration route from the Horn of Africa to Yemen remains one of the most perilous in the world, with thousands of migrants crossing each year despite the ongoing conflict and deteriorating conditions in Yemen. IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) recorded over 97,200 migrant arrivals in Yemen in 2023, surpassing the previous year’s numbers. However, with the conflict deepening, migrants remain stranded, with little access to basic services and constant exposure to violence and exploitation.

This recent tragedy underscores the urgent need for more robust measures to protect migrants and prevent future loss of life. IOM urges all actors to step up support and prevent further tragedies along migration routes, and address the root causes driving irregular migration, including conflict, poverty, and climate-related challenges.

Adequate funding and resources are urgently needed to address the growing needs of stranded migrants. Strengthened international collaboration and increased financial backing are essential to effectively tackle these challenges and ensure that migrants receive the necessary protection and assistance during their perilous migration journeys.

Since 2014, IOM’s  Missing Migrants Project  has recorded 2,082 migrant deaths and disappearances on the Eastern Route, including 693 due to drowning. Despite these harrowing numbers, the international response remains severely underfunded.

Note to Editors:

IOM’s Missing Migrants Project is the only open-access database on migrant deaths and disappearances worldwide and the sole indicator (10.7.3) to measure safe migration in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Together with 48 other humanitarian and development organizations and governments, IOM coordinates the  Regional Migrant Response Plan for the Horn of Africa, Yemen and Southern Africa (MRP)  to respond to the urgent humanitarian needs of migrants along the Eastern Route. Although  MRP partners appealed for USD 112 million , the appeal remains severely underfunded.

Tragic Boat Fire Claims 40 Migrant Lives Off Haiti’s Coast

chase iom yacht

Port-au-Prince, 19 July – At least 40 migrants have died, and several others were injured after a boat they were travelling in caught fire off the coast of Cap Haitien, in the north of Haiti. On 17 July, according to the National Office for Migration (ONM), the boat, carrying over 80 people, departed from Fort Saint-Michel en route to the Turks and Caicos Islands, a 250-kilometer journey.

Forty-one surviving migrants who were aboard were rescued by the Haitian Coast Guard and are currently receiving medical care, food, water, and psychosocial support provided by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in support of the ONM. Eleven migrants were taken to the nearest hospital for treatment, including burns.

“This devastating event highlights the risks faced by children, women, and men migrating through irregular routes, demonstrating the crucial need for safe and legal pathways for migration.” said Grégoire Goodstein, IOM’s chief of mission in the country. “Haiti’s socio-economic situation is in agony. The extreme violence over the past months has only brought Haitians to resort to desperate measures even more.”

The lack of economic opportunities, a collapsing health system, school closures, and the absence of prospects are pushing many to consider migration as the only way to survive. A 2023 IOM research found that 84 per cent of migrants returned had left to seek job opportunities abroad. For the vast majority of Haitians, regular migration is an extremely challenging journey to consider, let alone pursue, leaving many seeing irregular migration as their only option, a particularly life-threatening one in most instances.

Since 29 February, Haitian Coast Guard in the north has observed an increase in the number of attempts and departures by boat. Coast Guards from countries in the region, including the United States, the Bahamas, the Turks and Caicos Islands, and Jamaica, have also reported a growing number of boats originating from Haiti being intercepted at sea.

More than 86,000 migrants have been forcibly returned to Haiti by neighboring countries this year. In March, despite a surge in violence and the closure of airports throughout the country, forced returns increased by 46 per cent, reaching 13,000 forced returns in March alone.

IOM is concerned about the high number of forced returns of Haitians during this current period of civil unrest and uncertainty. Forced returns must occur in a dignified manner. Many migrants forcibly returned, including unaccompanied and separated children as well as pregnant and nursing women, arrive in Haiti in highly vulnerable conditions, often with few resources. They urgently need humanitarian assistance after facing numerous health and protection concerns during their journeys.

To meet these needs, working alongside the Haitian National Office for Migration, IOM provides tailor-made assistance upon arrival, including food and water during the registration process, unconditional and multi-purpose cash assistance, hygiene kits with dignity items for women and girls, and specific kits for babies. Additionally, first aid and medical referrals are available, along with psychosocial support and counseling from trained IOM psychologists. Family reunification for unaccompanied and separated children is also supported in coordination with local authorities.
