Learn More About Broward And Find Your Next Boat

Powerful and extravagant, Broward has been building boat for years that glorify contemporary style and luxury details. Established in 1948 by Frank Denison, Broward made its first appearance on the site of the former Dooley’s Basin & Dry Dock Company, which was organized initially for war efforts back in the day.  Soon the shipyard was renamed Broward Marine and began to start a service and repair business, which led to their first launch of a custom motor yacht, Stormy III – designed by an architect named John Wells. Since the 50s, Denison really took initiative in building boats over 140-170 feet for the Dutch and US Navies, but soon switched back to creating more leisure yachts built with aluminum. Denison’s sons came onboard to help successfully deliver all their yachts in the 80s – including flybridge, pilothouse and tri-deck models. As years went on, Broward was able to produce some of the most elite custom luxury yachts, launching more than 300 Broward yachts. In 2009, duo Bruce and Chris Moore took ownership of the company and soon incorporated the shipyard into Broward Shipyard, Inc offering custom yachts from 18 to 50 meters. Now with an impressive establishment in South Florida, Broward Yachts continues to fulfill those who love power and luxury within their yachts.

Election 2024

Election 2024 | broward voters chose new tax collector and incumbents for elections supervisor and clerk of courts.

Signage identifies the International Longshoremen’s Local #1526 as a voting precinct on primary Election Day in Fort Lauderdale, Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2024. (Amy Beth Bennett / South Florida Sun Sentinel)

Tax collector

Broward voters chose a political newcomer for the first ever elected tax collector. The new tax collector, Abbey Ajayi, will perform duties that were previously handled by county employees.

Ajayi held various banking positions  before she joined the county tax office in 2015, first as a special project coordinator, and worked her way up to operations manager of the division.

Ajayi beat two opponents in a tight race — political newcomer Dwight Forrest and Perry E. Thurston , an attorney who served 16 years in the Florida Legislature. Forrest runs the accounting section of the county’s Records, Tax & Treasury Division, where he said he supervises 14 employees.

Broward’s tax collector will issue car, truck and boat registration tags and titles, renew and update driver’s licenses, and collect property taxes and other tax payments. The job pays $215,501, with annual increases calculated in part based on population growth.

Broward County now must have an elected tax collector because of a change that was pushed by a statewide Constitution Revision Commission and approved by voters in the 2018 general election. Amendment 10 requires all counties to have an elected sheriff, tax collector, property appraiser, supervisor of elections and clerk of court.

The Broward tax collector race was open to all voters because the only three candidates are all Democrats.

“I am very excited to get started doing the work of the people,” Ajayi said late Tuesday. She said she has ideas for improvements for the office “that will benefit the community.”

Elections supervisor

Incumbent Joe Scott won a second term as elections supervisor. Scott last won four years ago by 607 votes — a slim margin — but Tuesday’s vote was a larger victory.

Scott’s challenger was Russell Roberto Bathulia, 62, a Democrat from Sunrise, whose campaign website describes him as a native of Trinidad who operates Top Jewels Yachts, a yacht service and sales company.

Among Scott’s credits is revamping the elections website, and he oversaw a relocation of the elections office from the Lauderhill Mall to a new headquarters, at 4650 NW 21st Ave. in Fort Lauderdale, earlier this month. The $103 million facility, funded by the County Commission, includes modern voting technology, increased office space, and enhanced security measures to prevent a replay of the 2018 protest outside the elections office  where dozens of police officers showed up to “protect the ballots at all costs.”

After the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol, security became the new focus for the new building.

The position pays $215,501, a rate set by the state .

“I am more fired up than ever,” he said by text Tuesday night. “With newfound experience and the same unwavering passion for this role, I am confident that the next four years will be nothing short of extraordinary.”

Clerk of courts

In the three-way race for clerk of courts, two political newcomers sought to unseat Broward Clerk of Courts Brenda D. Forman.

Forman won a third term to the administrative position.

The clerk of courts, whose salary is $215,501, manages all court records, including child-support payments, traffic fines, marriages, divorces and lawsuits. The Broward clerk manages jury selection for the state’s second-largest court system.

Forman, who was first elected in 2016 and re-elected in 2020, was challenged by two former employees: Annette Daniels and Charles F. Hall.

Forman fired Daniels, a clerk’s administrative assistant, when Daniels announced that she would run for the job. Hall, who worked there through 2021, said he resigned after a dispute with Forman over a potential reassignment.

“I thank all of the people who have trusted me over the last eight years who trusted me to do my job and thank them very, very much for voting me back into my seat to give me that trust one more time,” Forman told the South Florida Sun Sentinel on Tuesday evening by phone, as her supporters rejoiced in the background.

Bayesian yacht sinking live: 5 bodies found as tech magnate Mike Lynch and Morgan Stanley International chair both identified

The first body has been recovered from the sunken Bayesian superyacht.

Divers searching the wreck of a superyacht that sank off Sicily have identified the five recovered bodies brought up from the wreck so far, including that of UK tech tycoon Mike Lynch and Jonathan Bloomer, chair of Morgan Stanley International.

Specialist divers working with an underwater robot on Wednesday had pulled up four bodies from the wreck of the “Bayesian”, while another was pulled up on Thursday morning, according to AFP reporters.

The five identified bodies are:

  • British technology tycoon Mike Lynch
  • Jonathan Bloomer, Morgan Stanley Bank International chairman
  • Judy Bloomer, Jonathan’s wife
  • Chris Morvillo, Clifford Chance lawyer
  • Neda Morvillo, the wife of Chris

Specialist divers are still searching for the last person missing, Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah Lynch.

Read more: Mike Lynch was ‘Britain’s Bill Gates’—but the late tech millionaire would spend many of his final months under house arrest

The 56-metre (185 feet) British-flagged “Bayesian” had been anchored some 700 metres off Porticello when it was struck by a waterspout — akin to a mini-tornado — during a pre-dawn storm.

It sank within minutes.

Fifteen people were rescued, including Lynch’s wife and a woman with a one-year-old baby.

But the tech entrepreneur and his daughter, his lawyer Christopher Morvillo and his wife Neda, and Jonathan Bloomer, the chair of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife Judy, were all reported missing.

Lynch and his daughter, his lawyer Christopher Morvillo and his wife Neda, and Jonathan Bloomer, the chair of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife Judy, were all reported missing.

Many questions remain about why the yacht sank, and on Thursday the head of the company which built the boat said the tragedy could have been avoided.

“Everything that was done reveals a very long summation of errors,” said Giovanni Costantino, head of the Italian Sea Group, which includes the Perini Navi company that built “Bayesian”.

He told Italy’s Corriere della Sera newspaper that bad weather was forecast and all the passengers should have been gathered at the assembly point, all the doors and hatches closed.

Security camera footage of the ship from the shore showed the lights on its mast going out, which Costantino said indicated a short circuit, meaning that the ship had already taken on water.

“A Perini ship resisted Hurricane Katrina, a category 5 (hurricane). Does it seem to you that it can’t resist a tornado from here?” he told the newspaper.

“It is good practice when the ship is at anchor to have a guard on the bridge, and if there was one he could not have failed to see the storm coming.

“Instead it took on water with the guests still in the cabin… They ended up in a trap, those poor people ended up like mice.”

Five minutes

The passengers were guests of Lynch — an entrepreneur sometimes referred to as Britain’s Bill Gates — to celebrate his acquittal in a massive US fraud case.

The 59-year-old was acquitted on all charges in a San Francisco court in June after he was accused of an $11 billion fraud linked to the sale of his software firm Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard.

Among the survivors was Charlotte Golunski, board director of a company founded by Lynch, who has described how she briefly lost hold of her one-year-old daughter before grabbing her again. Both were plucked to safety.

Fabio Genco, a member of the Palermo Emergency Medical Services who was among the team that treated the child, described the “apocalyptic” situation he found on arriving at the scene.

“The word that the mother and all the injured kept repeating was ‘darkness’, the darkness that they experienced during the shipwreck,” he told the BBC’s Newsnight programme.

“They spoke of about five minutes, maybe from three to five minutes, from the moment the boat was lifted, raised by the waves of the sea, until it sank.”

He said the survivors rescued had been in shock: “There were truly apocalyptic scenes where everyone was searching and hoping to find the people who at that moment, were not present or just missing.”

All the survivors treated in hospital have been discharged, he confirmed.

Anarchic sea conditions

The speed with which the yacht sank, and the fact that other boats around it were unaffected, was extraordinary.

Some key questions remain, including whether the keel, which provides a counterbalance to the towering mast, was down when the storm hit.

Matthew Schanck, from the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told AFP what happened was a “pretty unprecedented”, describing it as a “black swan event” — something that is unlikely, but has a big impact.

UK meteorologist Peter Inness described a waterspout as a “narrow column of rotating air below a thunderstorm that occurs over water”.

Like tornadoes, they suck up air in a rotating motion. Many are fairly inconsequential, but some can pack winds of more than 100 kilometres (62 miles) per hour, said Inness.

Jean-Marie Dumon, a former naval officer now with the GICAN, the French maritime industry association, added that conditions with winds of 100kph or more can “create completely anarchic sea conditions which can cause capsizing”.

Bodies of Autonomy founder Mike Lynch and his daughter recovered from sunken Bayesian yacht

Mike Lynch at TC Disrupt

Grim news coming in from Sicily, Italy. Mike Lynch, the U.K. investor and founder of IT company Autonomy, has been identified as one of two bodies recovered from the Bayesian , the yacht that sunk off the coast of Sicily early Monday, according to several reports coming out of the country that cite the chief of Civil Protection, Salvo Cocina.

Lynch’s daughter, Hannah, has also been identified.

The news caps off a grim few days of events. The boat, registered to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, quickly capsized in the early hours of Monday after it was struck by a tornado-like water column. Bacares was among the 15 survivors, but three bodies have now been found and four more are still being recovered from the wreck. Those yet to be found include the international chairman of Morgan Stanley bank, his wife, a lawyer from New York who worked with Lynch, and his wife.

As we previously reported , the Bayesian was on a voyage to celebrate Lynch’s acquittal in a criminal fraud trial in the U.S. earlier this summer. That trial also involved a co-defendant, Stephen Chamberlain.

In a tragic coincidence, Chamberlain was hit by a car last Saturday and died of his wounds earlier this week.

Lynch was one of the most well-known and colorful figures in the U.K. technology world — sometimes referred to as the “Bill Gates of U.K. tech.”

HP acquired Lynch’s enterprise technology firm Autonomy in 2011 for $11 billion — a major milestone for U.K. technology and one of the biggest tech M&A deals at the time. But it quickly turned sour, and HP sued Lynch and Autonomy’s director of finance, Chamberlain, arguing it was misled in the transaction.

HP claimed that the deal led to a $4 billion+ loss — money it then demanded from Lynch and Chamberlain. Lynch (pictured above, left) and his co-defendant long asserted that they acted in good faith and were being made into scapegoats over a merger gone bad.

That legal drama went on for more than a decade and involved a host of other thorny chapters, including Lynch’s extradition to the U.S. over the DoJ criminal suit (the one that only recently concluded with acquittal) and a lot of very bad publicity for him. It also included a second, civil case that took place in 2022 in the U.K., which Lynch lost.

The U.S. criminal case, where Lynch and Chamberlain were charged with 15 counts of fraud and conspiracy and could have spelled jail for the pair, went to trial earlier this year in San Francisco. Then finally, in June, Lynch and Chamberlain were acquitted .

In the interim years, Lynch built up a profile in the U.K. as a prominent investor, most prominently as the founder of Invoke Capital .

The VC firm was the biggest investor in cybersecurity firm Darktrace, a connection that was not without its own controversy . It also invested in Sophia Genetics , Featurespace and Luminance, among others. And it appeared that this is the route that he had been planning to continue to pursue.

“I am elated with today’s verdict and grateful to the jury for their attention to the facts over the last 10 weeks. My deepest thanks go to my legal team for their tireless work on my behalf,” Lynch said at the time of the acquittal in June. “I am looking forward to returning to the U.K. and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field.”

Our thoughts go out to Lynch’s (and Chamberlain’s) family, friends and colleagues. We have also reached out to Lynch’s spokespeople and will update this post as we learn more.
