Racing and Sailing

We are exceedingly fortunate in having a warm, equitable climate and only on rare occasions are races canceled due to heavy storms or lack of wind.

Racing mainly takes place on Saturday afternoon as well as on most public holidays and once on a month in the late afternoon on a Wednesday late.

The course for the race is set by the Sailing Secretary and run by the Officer of the Day (OOD) with most races being held either in the Harbour, Creek or Offshore.

LYC also organises a number of special events which are usually combined races of longer duration than one afternoon. The most famous of these is the Badagry Race an overnight 140km race recognized as one of the longest inland waterways race in the world – an adventure!

National Championships for each of the four main classes of boats namely Hobie 16, Lightning, Tarpon and Laser is held on an annual basis with the winner qualifying to represent Nigeria at the World Championships.

America's Cup sets sail in Barcelona with New Zealand defending the Auld Mug

The world’s oldest international sports trophy, best yachtsmen and cutting-edge design and technology will come together in Barcelona when the 37th edition of the America’s Cup starts on Thursday

BARCELONA, Spain -- The world's oldest international sports trophy, best yachtsmen and cutting-edge design and technology will come together in Barcelona when the 37th edition of the America’s Cup starts on Thursday.

Five boats – from Italy, the United States, Britain, Switzerland and France – will spend the coming weeks racing in the Mediterranean waves to decide which will earn the honor of trying to dethrone the almighty Emirates Team New Zealand for the Auld Mug.

As the two-time defender, the Kiwis chose Barcelona’s choppy waters as the venue and helped establish the rules and boat design for this edition. They also get a guaranteed spot in the final to be held in October.

The results of three years of work and massive investment will now be put to the test.

“It is starting to get serious in a hurry. We are now racing for keeps,” Ben Ainslie, skipper of British team INEOS Britannia, said Wednesday.

Here is what else you need to know about the equivalent of the World Cup of sailing.

For anyone who has not followed the foiling revolution in sailing over the past decade, America's Cup yachts look more like something designed to fly through outer space in a sci-fi film than a traditional sailboat.

The only parts more or less recognizable are the rudder, mast, mainsail and jib on the foiling 75-foot monohull that the champions chose as the boat type for these regattas. This AC75 is an evolution of the 2021 monohulls, which were a radical leap from the catamarans that the same New Zealand team sailed to victory in 2017.

If you are looking for a skipper standing tall at the helm while sailors scamper around the deck, then forget it. The helmeted crew members are tucked into cockpits, keeping them out of the wind and favoring the boats' aerodynamics.

But the most remarkable feature of these boats are the two hydrofoils, attached to winglike appendages port and starboard, that make these boats look like giant water strider insects. The foils enable these wonders of nautical engineering to spend more time with the bottom of their hulls above the water than submerged while racing. Their “T” shape resembles the inverted tail of an orca whale, and their 4.5-meter span sustains the more than six-ton boat as it rockets over the water at 50 knots per hour (92 kph/57.5 mph).

All the teams have two helmsmen for this race – copying a move made by the Italian Luna Rossa team three years ago. The two helmsmen take turns steering and watching the other's blind spot since each one has half his visibility cut off by the sails. There are also two trimmers.

Gone this time are the grinders. Instead, each boat has four cyclists, called “cyclors” — many of whom are world-class rowers — who pedal away to power the hydraulic mechanisms needed to trim the sails and rotate the mast.

Emirates Team New Zealand won the America’s Cup in 1995 and 2000 before winning the last two editions.

They are without a doubt the team to beat.

The team led by Grant Dalton has earned the respect of their rivals for their daring boat designs and flawless execution. They will participate in the opening round, but their points won’t count. They will then sit out the next two rounds while the remaining teams duke it out to see which will meet them in the final.

Peter Burling is back at the helm after helping the team win in 2017 and 2021. He is joined by fellow Olympic medalist Nathan Outteridge in steering their super-sleek Taihoro yacht.

“The challenger group is the strongest it has been in a long time at the America’s Cup,” Burling said. “It is going to be super exciting to see what happens over the next weeks.”

— Italy’s Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team reached the last final in 2021 — and lost 7-3. The team representing the Sicily Yacht Club is steered by helmsmen Jimmy Spithill and Francesco Bruni.

— INEOS Britannia is hoping to end Britain’s painfully long search for a title. No team has challenged as many times as the British, a losing streak which started back in 1851 when they were bettered by the schooner America in a race around the Isle of Wight. INEOS is led by helmsman and Olympic great Ainslie and is supported by the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

— NYYC American Magic is back after its 2021 campaign ended shortly after its Patriot boat capsized and almost sank. The New York Yacht Club draws on the history of having won the first edition and then successfully defending the title 24 times until that incredible 132-year run ended in 1983. It's helmed by Tom Slingsby, the sailor of the year, an Australian who has an American passport thanks to his American mother, and Englishman Paul Goodison, a fellow Olympic gold medalist.

__ Alinghi Red Bull Racing is backed by the sports drink giant and its F1 team. The Swiss outfit is seeking a title after the landlocked nation won the cup in 2003 and 2007. It has been training in Barcelona the longest after setting up base here two years ago.

__ Orient Express Racing Team comes with a boat based on a design it purchased from the New Zealand team. The last team to arrive in Barcelona, the French face the extra challenge of having less on-site practice time.

A round-robin stage will eliminate the weakest challenger by Sept. 8. The remaining four will have two playoff series to decide which boat will take on New Zealand in a best-of-13 series starting on Oct. 12.

This year’s event also includes a new Women’s America’s Cup and a youth competition.

The racing will take place in the same stretch of water used for the sailing events at the 1992 Olympics.

Boats zigzag back and forth across a rectangular race course located in waters just off the Barcelona beachfront, within view of fans on the shore. Boats have to pass through a pair of buoys – called a gate – and perform hairpin turns by shifting from one foil to the other.

Several teams have said that Barcelona’s waters can produce trickier race conditions than, for example, Auckland, since there is no natural bay to stop the wave action that comes from far offshore and often goes in a direction off-angle from the wind.

Race starts are crucial as boats maneuver to be in a leading position when they hit the starting line.

In choosing Spain, New Zealand broke with its tradition of picking Auckland as this edition’s venue because of the need to ensure a big payday. And what better place to ensure people would flock to see the event than one of Europe’s major Mediterranean destinations?

The last regatta in New Zealand was held when the world was still in the grip of the COVID-19 pandemic. That meant there were scant crowds and little of the glamor – think superyachts and wealthy sailing amateurs — who are expected to be back en masse at Barcelona. Fashion and luxury goods designer Louis Vuitton has returned as the official sponsor of the race, and the trophy is secured in a custom Louis Vuitton case when it travels.

Barcelona calculates the event will attract some 2.5 million tourists and leave over a billion euros in the city. It is being held during an upsurge in citizen complaints against what they consider “overtourism” and skyrocketing rents .

56m perini navi sailing yacht BAYESIAN yacht sinks off coast of sicily

Live updates: Seven dead in 56m superyacht Bayesian sinking tragedy

Seven people have died in the Bayesian sinking disaster. These include the six missing people who were inside the yacht when it sank, as well as a seventh person who was located shortly after the disaster. The seventh person is understood to be the yacht's chef, Recaldo Thomas. The other six are:

  • British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, once dubbed 'Britain's Bill Gates'
  • Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah
  • Morgan Stanley's chairman, Jonathan Bloomer
  • Judy Bloomer, wife of Morgan Stanley chairman
  • Chris Morvillo, a lawyer working for London-based law firm Clifford Chance
  • Neda Morvillo, an American jewellery designer and Chris' wife

It is understood that the yacht was being used to celebrate Lynch's recent victory in a 13-year £8 billion fraud acquittal.

No one remembers the mast snapping before 56m superyacht Bayesian sunk, says crew

No one recalls seeing the mast snap on board the 56-metre Perini Navi sailing yacht Bayesian which sank off the Italian island of Sicily on 19 August. The eyewitness account of a crewmember on board the vessel, which was obtained by BOAT International , said that the boat was struck by a freak weather event which led to the yacht heeling at around 20 degrees to starboard. As crewmembers were securing items, the heeling angle began to increase rapidly until the yacht started taking on water and sank rapidly.

The crewmembers who were up on deck were able to evacuate the yacht with minor injuries. The yacht is understood to have sunk in just twelve minutes, and it is believed that a "major ingress" of water from the top down would have caused the sinking, according to a captain who wishes to remain anonymous. This is based on the fact that no breaches have been reported in the yacht's hull, and the fact that the yacht should have been able to remain afloat with two flooded compartments.

"Very difficult to understand what could have overwhelmed a vessel of that size" says captain of sistership

The captain of the sistership to the sunken 56-metre Perini Navi sailing yacht Bayesian has said it is "very difficult to understand what could have overwhelmed a vessel of that size" and called the 56-metre Perini Navi series "bulletproof".

David Hutchinson, captain of Rosehearty , said he had taken the yacht around the world multiple times and he had "total faith in the boat".  "We've been to Antarctica and Chile, and we've had her in 70 knots of wind," he says, and the vessel had never put them in a situation that felt unmanageable.

However, Hutchinson noted there were differences between Bayesian and Rosehearty ; notably, Bayesian's  74-metre mast, which would have been heavier and added increased windage. The yacht's layout was also different, with guest accommodation on Bayesian located further forward.

Live updates

  • During a news conference on Saturday morning (24 August), prosecutors confirmed they are in the early stages of investigating a "crime hypothesis" of culpable shipwreck and manslaughter. Authorities also said the yacht likely sunk because of a downburst (powerful wind that descends from a thunderstorm), rather than a waterspout.
  • A search and rescue for six missing people has concluded. The final missing person is understood to be Hannah Lynch.
  • According to Reuters, six bodies have now been found in the sunken yacht. These include Mike Lynch, a British technology entrepreneur who co-founded Autonomy Corporation and founded Invoke Capital, although Italian authorities have not confirmed this.
  • One person was found immediately after the yacht sunk, and this is understood to be the yacht's chef.
  • Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, and a one-year-old are among the fifteen people rescued along with Bayesian' s captain, James Cutfield.
  • Another sailing vessel in the area, the 42-metre Sir Robert Baden Powell ,  stepped in to offer assistance in the initial rescue.
  • Divers have been able to reach Bayesian' s sunken hull, which lies at 45 metres of depth about half a mile from the coast. The yacht had the largest aluminium masts of any sailing yacht on the water.
  • Eyewitnesses in the area reported "hurricane" conditions off the coast but local weather websites did not indicate any severe squall, which suggests that the weather event was not forecast.
  • At around 5am local time on 19 August, Bayesian was hit by bad weather and sunk.  The sailing yacht was anchored or idle at the time of the incident.

Built in Italy by renowned builder Perini Navi and delivered in 2008, the yacht's naval architecture was developed by Ron Holland Design while the interior design is by Rémi Tessier . She was formerly known as Salute and was last refitted in 2016. She was listed for sale earlier this year, according to BOATPro . The yacht had accommodation for nine guests and 12 crew.

BOAT International will update the story as it develops.

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — The world’s oldest international sports trophy, best yachtsmen and cutting-edge design and technology will come together in Barcelona when the 37th edition of the America’s Cup starts on Thursday.

The project is an inspiring collaboration between Jarkko Jämsén –Nautor Swan’s resident motor yacht designer – and Ioanna Marinopoulou and Axel de Beaufort – responsible for the interior design. Initially meant as a chase boat, the result is now a magnificent open yacht blending sporty elegance with functionality ideal for extended cruising adventures.

“We set out to maximise the sensation and enjoyment of being on the water and being outdoors,” says Jarkko Jämsén.

The yacht is characterised by the walk-around deck design and the fabulous elevated 50sqm beach club featuring a fold out terrace on each side and gentle steps up to the cockpit. The semi open cockpit boasts an opening roof and sliding door system to create an al fresco lounge. Alternatively when the doors and roof are closed, the space becomes a cosy and private salon, protected from the elements.

The homely interior includes three lower deck ensuite cabins to accommodate up to six guests and a dedicated galley. The aft master suite is full beam with a walk-in closed and ensuite, while the VIP and twin also benefit from private ensuite bathroom facilities. Further forward, with separate access is a twin bunk cabin for the crew. An alternative layout replaces the twin guest suite with a lower deck lounge.

Nautor Swan’s Motoryacht Commercial Director, Roy Capasso commented, “When staring the Swan Arrow project we began with attentively listening to our clients and a details analysis of the market. The results, together with the creativity of our designers and the expertise of a qualified team, have allowed us to introduce a new concept with some features missing in motor yachts of this size.”

A Guide to the World’s Most Prestigious Yacht Clubs

Getting to know the best yacht clubs around.

You’ve probably seen those beautiful, sleek yachts docked at marinas and thought to yourself, “Who gets to be a part of all that?” Well, let’s dive into the world of yacht clubs – places where yacht owners and enthusiasts gather. It’s not all about owning a big boat; these clubs are steeped in history, tradition, and a love for the sea.

Where It All Started

Yacht clubs have been around for ages. They began as spots for people who loved sailing to meet, swap stories, and organize races. Over time, they turned into symbols of prestige and social hubs. But it’s not just about social status; these clubs are keepers of sailing traditions and play a big part in the communities they’re in. Their buildings often look like they’ve come straight out of a history book, situated in some of the most beautiful spots by the water.

The Big Names in The Yacht Club World

The royal yacht squadron.

This club’s got a serious history, having been founded way back in 1815 on the Isle of Wight. It’s got royal ties and has been a key player in sailing for centuries. Getting in isn’t easy, but if you do, you get to be part of a club known worldwide for its racing events and impressive clubhouse.

Yacht Club de Monaco

Imagine a club right in the lap of luxury – that’s this Monaco-based club for you. With Prince Albert II at the helm, it’s a gathering place for the world’s elite, offering top-notch facilities and hosting major sailing competitions.

New York Yacht Club

An icon of American sailing since 1844, this club has a rich heritage of competitive sailing success, including an unmatched winning streak in the America’s Cup. Its headquarters in New York is a piece of maritime history, filled with tales of the sea.

More Than Just a Club

Being part of a yacht club means you’re part of a tradition that values the sea and sailing. It’s not just about access to fancy amenities or exclusive parties; it’s about joining a community that shares your passion. These clubs also get involved in charity, education, and efforts to protect the oceans, showing that they care about more than just sailing.

How to Join the Club

Getting into these prestigious clubs often involves a careful application, a nod from current members, and a real interest in the world of yachting. Each club has its own way of doing things, but they all look for people who share their values and commitment to sailing.

For those intrigued by the world of prestigious yacht clubs and the luxury of yachting, getting connected with the right people is key. That’s where Fly Yachts comes in. West Coast Clubs Travel East to the New York Yacht Club Resolute Cup

A recent press release from the New York Yacht Club highlighted Bay Area racer Daniel Thielman and his crew from the Corinthian Yacht Club as a new invitee to compete in the annual New York Yacht Club Resolute Cup. This year, 28 teams have been invited to this all-amateur sailing event, including seven from the West Coast: California Yacht Club, Corinthian YC of San Francisco, Newport Harbor Yacht Club, San Diego Yacht Club, Seattle Yacht Club, St. Francis Yacht Club, and San Francisco Yacht Club.

Kuai with blue spinnaker

Beyond Thielman’s active campaigning of his Melges 32 Kuai on the Bay, he’s also been active nationally, winning multiple championships in the Melges 20 class, where he’s also the defending world champion. He recently returned to the Corinthian Yacht Club of San Francisco with the IC37 National Championship title won during New York Yacht Club Race Week at Newport, RI, sailed July 17–20. This September, however, will mark the first time that his club has fielded a team in the Resolute Cup, motivated by Thielman’s desire to qualify for the prestigious Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup, which will next take place in September 2025.

The CYC IC37 Kuai racing in the national championship. Now sailing for Resolute Cup.

“Members of our Corinthian Yacht Club purchased an IC37 back in 2023 to prepare for the Invitational Cup,” said Thielman. “After a year of preparation, we’ve assembled a team that is ready to make a qualifying bid.”

Thielman will be sailing with trimmers Jen Canestra and Auric Horneman, who have been his constant and trusted teammates for over 10 years of racing Melges boats together, and Nick Voss.

“We currently race in the Melges 20, Melges 14, and IC37 one-design fleets around the country, and PHRF race our Melges 32 on San Francisco Bay,” Thielman says. “We hope that adding Nick as a tactician for the Resolute Cup, with his many years of junior, college and adult team racing experience, will give us the edge we need to be competitive.”

Daniel Thielman racing in the IC37s will now sail in the Resolute Cup.

Since 2010, the Resolute Cup has served as a Corinthian championship for US yacht clubs and the only guaranteed pathway for an American club to earn a berth in the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup, Corinthian (amateur) sailing’s most prestigious international competition. The seventh edition of the biennial competition — the event was not sailed in 2020 — is scheduled for September 9 to 14 at the New York Yacht Club, Harbour Court, in Newport, RI. The 2024 Resolute Cup will utilize the Club’s fleet of Sonars, with provided sails, equalized rig tune and on-the-water umpiring ensuring sailing’s ultimate level playing field. The 2024 New York Yacht Club Regatta Association regatta calendar is supported by Helly Hansen, Hammetts Hotel, Safe Harbor Marinas and Peters & May.

While Thielman has shown remarkable ability across multiple one-design classes, the Sonar, a displacement boat with a symmetric spinnaker, is a bit of a departure from what he and his team normally sail.

The New York Yacht Club's matched fleet of Sonars will challenge the whole fleet.

“Every boat we own, and every fleet we compete in, has asymmetric kites,” he says. “We have gotten in limited practices on J/22s to prepare, but with our aggressive championship race schedule in other fleets, we are mostly going to be winging it with a symmetric kite. I would not be surprised if we have a slow start, with results that steadily improve throughout the week.”

The complete list of competing teams is here: American Yacht Club, Rye, NY; Austin (Texas) Yacht Club; Bay Waveland Yacht Club, Bay St. Louis, MS; Bayview Yacht Club, Detroit, MI.; California Yacht Club, Marina del Rey, CA; Carolina Yacht Club, Charleston, SC; Charleston Yacht Club, Charleston, SC; Chicago (IL) Yacht Club; Corinthian Yacht Club, Marblehead, MA; Corinthian Yacht Club of San Francisco, Tiburon, CA; Eastern Yacht Club, Marblehead, MA; Edgewater Yacht Club, Cleveland, Ohio; Fort Worth (Texas) Yacht Club; Lakewood Yacht Club, Seabrook, Texas; Larchmont (NY.) Yacht Club; Little Traverse Yacht Club, Harbor Springs, MI; Mystic River Mudheads Sailing Association, West Mystic, CT; New York (NY) Yacht Club; Newport Harbor Yacht Club, Newport Beach, CA.; Pensacola (FL) Yacht Club; San Diego (CA) Yacht Club; Seattle (WA) Yacht Club; Shelter Island Yacht Club, Shelter Island Heights, NY; Southern Yacht Club, New Orleans, LA; St. Francis Yacht Club, San Francisco, CA; Stamford (CT) Yacht Club; Storm Trysail Club (Larchmont, NY); San Francisco Yacht Club, Belvedere, CA.

Much more to the regatta than racing

Published on August 26th, 2024 by Editor -->

The most competitive Norwegian and Danish Knarr sailors will soon arrive at St. Francis Yacht Club to join the local San Francisco fleet for the 54th edition of the International Knarr Championships (IKC) on September 1-7 in San Francisco, CA. Much more than just a sailing event, the IKC places a premium on two elements: rock solid friendships and world-class one design racing in a classic boat.

The inaugural IKC was held in San Francisco in 1969, initiated by Danish-American sailor Knud Wibroe who introduced the Knarr to the Bay. The ethos of the Knarr class are based in tradition and camaraderie bound together by a Corinthian desire to play hard and have as much fun as humanly possible both on and off the water. The 30-foot Knarr was first built in Norway in 1946 and still attracts competitive sailors today.

“The class is all about friendship between three countries and that makes it different to conventional competitive sailing,” said John Buestad of the San Francisco Knarr fleet. “The same good guys compete at IKC every year from the three countries and it turns out to be pretty special.

“Given that the boats are old and slow you wouldn’t think it would be that competitive, but it always has been—and certainly is now in our local fleet with Olympians Russ Silvestri and Randy Hecht.

lagos yacht club sail around the world

“Don Jesberg, who is an accomplished Etchells sailor and won the season championship last year, is racing with Ethan Doyle. Then there are the Perkins brothers who won the IKC in Norway last year. We have World and National Champions in this fleet. You have not just good sailors but great sailors coming in for the IKC.” The IKC rotates annually between Denmark, Norway, and the United States, and is unique in that competitors draw for the boat that they will sail on any given race day. International competitors are always hosted by home fleet members, and it is entirely expected that sailors fully participate in singing and theatrical performance when appropriate.

As Buestad notes, the San Francisco home fleet is stacked with talent, both seasoned and newcomer, drawn to the Knarr because of the skill required to sail the boat. As an older, heavier design, its race prowess may not be obvious to the 20- or 30-year-old inclined toward fast modern boats but therein lies the Knarr allure.

“The Knarr is a lot slower but that means the fleet goes almost the same speed, so it becomes all tactical,” Buestad said. “You have to have a great driver, but you really need a great tactician to figure out the current and tide, otherwise you can be the fastest sailor in the world and you won’t do well. It takes a while to learn to drive a Knarr, and the starts are critical. To finish in the top five, you must have a decent start.”

In recent years, the class has become an attractive proposition for younger competitors from other classes, who see some of the top sailors on San Francisco Bay racing Knarrs. They want to compete against the best sailors, but they soon figure out it’s not so easy sailing a Knarr, says Terry Anderlini, a Knarr owner since 1968.

“The funny thing is that it might look real simple to these hot shots who sit there and say, ‘Main and jib and old guys are sailing these boats, I am sure we can jump in there and win some races.’ Then they get their lunch handed to them! It’s just not that easy.”

Chris Perkins is doing his part to bring younger players into the Knarr family. In this IKC, he will be racing with his two sons, 23-year-old Charlie and 21-year-old Johnny, and against his brother, Jon, who is the defending IKC champion.

Chris Perkins was indoctrinated into the Knarr as a teen and has won the IKC four times, mostly on his home turf on San Francisco Bay, though he broke a Danish winning streak that ran from 1981 to 1991 by winning his first IKC in Denmark in 1992.

“Having my two sons sail with me in the fleet is a great time. They absolutely love it and we’ll have fun mixing up the team with all Perkins!”

He adds, “When you win a race in this fleet, everyone around you is really excited and supportive as they know what it takes—you have to sail really well and you have to get a little lucky. Your boat draw has to be good, as you don’t want to draw any slow boats. So, if you win, your competition is the first to congratulate you and buy you drinks — very different than winning in other fleets where the runners-up aren’t so happy.”

Mark Dahm, the 2024 IKC Chair, said that fun is built into the program, “It’s ten races over seven days so keeping up with the racing is one thing, but keeping up with the social schedule is another. It’s almost more demanding in preparation than the racing. It takes a lot of effort by a handful of people, but the festivities are on track to be epic, like the Thursday night Country-Western party featuring Mitch Polzak and the Royal Deuces.”

Twenty-five teams will be heading for the start line in front of St. Francis Yacht Club for the first race on September 1, with racing held daily to determine the overall champion.

If it’s Sunday, they’re sailing: 2 seniors stay the course with OCC’s seamanship program

From left, Ingrid Vallejo, Art Adair and Rick MacMahon rig their individual Lido 14 sailboats.

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

A couple of golden-agers who happen to share a common interest are just fine with the idea of repeating the same sailing class every Sunday in Newport Harbor offered through the Orange Coast College School of Sailing and Seamanship.

Huntington Beach resident Art Adair, 77, who retired after enjoying a career in education, has been taking the Lido 14 sailing class for nine years. Fellow classmate Rick MacMahon, 75, a psychotherapist from Orange, is in his third year.

“Art and I are unusual taking the same class over and over,” said MacMahon. “Most people either go on to bigger boats or they don’t come back. But I keep registering for back-to-back sessions.”

Art Adair, a dedicated student to OCC's sailing program, has become adept at sailing a Lido 14.

Both men prefer sailing one day a week, even if it means occasionally signing up for a different day in order to keep sailing.

According to the school’s sailing program coordinator, Mette Segerblom, the school offers easy and affordable access to sailing, power boating and seamanship education for ages 7 and older.

“We’re public access, you don’t have to be a member and you don’t have to bring any equipment but yourself,” said Segerblom.

Classmates Ingrid Vallejo, right, and her daughter, Audrey, sail in Newport Harbor.

That easy access is what draws Adair to the program.

“The key reason for me to go there is I don’t have a place to store a boat and there’s not a decent place to launch a sailboat unless you belong to a yacht club,” Adair said. “I don’t have to pay for maintenance, license, insurance, dock fees.”

MacMahon concurred, adding, ”You just go to a place and you’re able to start sailing.”

Rick MacMahon sails solo in a Lido 14 during his class at OCC's sailing school.

The two seniors also agree sailing brings them a host of benefits.

Adair, who enjoys being in the outdoors, even at home, said when he sails he especially savors the peace and quiet of the activity.

“Another reason for sailing is it keeps me limber, keeps me going, keeps my muscles in tone and in good shape, and depending how windy it is it keeps you moving and working pretty hard. I look forward to the unknown and challenge of small boat sailing.

“I like to sail with other people either in the boat or sometimes just in the class,” continued Adair, who also helps out as a tutor to instructor Deb Robinson. “It ends up like a small family, the social aspect is a major part of that.”

MacMahon said sailing brings him joy and has enriched his life. “It’s exhilarating, it’s fun,” he said. “When the wind is good it’s very exciting to be zipping along having the wind carrying you along at a nice clip.

“I’m a psychotherapist and I talk to people about the importance of community and this class is a community of sailors,” said MacMahon. “There’s a common interest, a familiarity about going to the same place, seeing others there, there’s a comfort in that.”

OCC sailing instructor Deb Robinson performs classroom instruction.

Greg Wisener, manager of the OCC Waterfront Campus, said the program engenders a common love of getting out on the water in a boat.

“Many people just assume it’s beyond their ability to get on the water and we’re here to provide that for them,” Wisener said. “As a college, what we want is to reach out to underserved communities and give them a place to extend community to here. Once they get on the water together it’s a leveling force, a shared experience and everyone is out of their element.”

When a group of people are suddenly immersed in the maritime world a type of kinship forms, he noted.

“It’s easier to connect socially when they are all in the same boat,” Wisener quipped.

Open seven days a week, the OCC Waterfront Campus School of Sailing and Seamanship, located at 1801 W. Coast Highway, is among the largest public boating education programs in the nation, offering around 700 classes a year.

The school operates three dozen boats, including dinghies, keelboats, cruising boats, offshore racers and powerboats, and has an extensive nautical library.

Lagos Sailing Clubs For World Tournament In Brazil

' src=

The best three teams from Lagos at the ongoing five-dayAfro-European Lightning Championship will feature at the World Sailing Tournament in July 2011 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Julian Calvin, the Commodore of Lagos Yacht Club told newsmen on Tuesday that the championship which began on Monday in Lagos was to celebrate Nigeria’s 50th independence anniversary.

“This is the first time Nigeria is hosting a sailing competition of this magnitude which has been rotated among continents in Europe, North and South America.

“Sailing as a sport has been on for 60 years and Nigeria got the right to host the tournament this October to mark its 50th independence anniversary,’’ Calvin said.

The Lagos Yacht Club chief said the competition, jointly organised by the Navy Sailing Club, Ojo, and his club would put Nigeria on the world sailing map.

Calvin told Tidesports source that clubs from England, Finland, Switzerland, France and host, Nigeria, would do nine races throughout the championship while the best three teams emerge on Friday.

“We did three races of two miles per race on Monday at the front of the Bar Beach where the water was calm and without ships obstructing the sail as we have at the Yacht Club area,’’ he said.

Osimhen rejects napoli’s salary cut.

Victor Osimhen has rejected a huge pay cut by Napoli and a new contract as his transfer saga remains unending with a week to the close of the window. Despite the rumours, there has been no concrete offer for the Super Eagles striker with suggestions that he may end up staying put at Napoli. Commentator Massimo Sparnelli revealed that Napoli proposed a pay cut, an extension of his contract until 2030, and make him the face of the Italian. Osimhen is currently on over 10m Euros a year and his contract will run out in June 2026. Napoli want him to agree to a lower salary of between 6m and 7m Euros a year. “The player refused,” Sparnelli revealed to CalcioNapoli24. “I can assure you that De Laurentiis made these proposals to him while promising to make the face of Napoli, but Osimhen refused.”

Administrator Blames Shoddy Preparation For Nigeria’s Poor Olympic Outing

An astute football administrator in the State Mr. Williams Mapuibi Inko has attributed the cause of Nigerian contingents’ dismal performance at the just concluded Paris 2024 Olympics Games to poor preparations from the authorities concerned. Baring his mind to our reporter via telephone conversation recently, Mapuibi Inko maintained that there was no magic Nigeria athletes would have performed that would have guaranteed her a medal from the event, considering her poor level of preparation to the event competing against notable World Sports beaters on Parade. “Honestly, the Nigerian athletes had hardly had enough and regular track and field event preparation before the championship, coupled with poor organization among the overbloated officials who were only interested in what they would gain as individuals from the two weeks outing” On whether it will be ideal to sack the Sports Minister John Enoh, following the woeful out of the Nigerian athletes at the concluded Olympic games, the Outspoken Mapuibi Inko, who is the President of Diobu International All Stars Sports Club says he has some little reservation for now. “Perhaps, I will subscribe that some professional and seasoned Sports administrator should be engaged to work with the Sports Minister so that different good ideas would be brought together to prosecute another major competitive event to guarantee better result of winning laurels at the end of the day”, he submitted. In a different development, Mapuibi Inko has encouraged members of the Diobu All Stars International Sports Club to affirm faith and continue to imbibe the spirt of oneness with a view to strengthening the team for effective outings. “Speaking to our reporter after taking a critical assessment of the club so far, Mapuibi Inko stated that it was a clear fact that Diobu International All Stars is on the right path of progress, having seen the vision of the Club towards ensuring that it’s dreams of hitting it big in the comity of other All-Stars Football Club in near future is actualized” He further, posited that the Club which had been the cynosure of all eyes in Diobu axis is making frantic effort to acquire all necessary sporting facilities, ranging from Jersey, footballs etc. to enhance their routine football trainings at St Andrews School Field, Mile one Diobu, Port Harcourt. “Besides, we are also training very assiduously to ensure that we are physically fit and capable to engage in any competitive matches within and outside the state” “Again, we are equally looking forward to establishing a good working relationship with the Basic Senior Secondary School management Board as to intimate them more of our vision and readiness towards encouraging grassroots sport development in Post-Secondary Schools in Rivers State, aimed at catching them young” The amiable Diobu International All Stars Sports Club boss, however, expressed happiness with the current improved numerical strength of the team, which according to him, is in line with the good ideal and vision of the Club right from its formation stage.

Rangers Qualify For C.C.L 2nd Preliminary Round

Reigning Nigeria league champions, Rangers International F.C has qualified for the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League 2024/2025 second preliminary round with a 2-1 aggregate win over Comoros Islands champions, U.S de Zilimadjou in the first preliminary round of the premier continental club competition. In the second leg, first preliminary round game played inside Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo on Friday, August 23, 2024, the ‘Flying Antelopes’ were forced to a 1-1 draw by the tiny Island nation. After both sides ended the first half on a goalless note, with begging chances fretted away by the home side, coach Fidelis Ilechukwu had to make quick substitutions that saw Kazeem Ogunleye and Chiedozie Okorie make way for Ekeson Okorie and Bashir Usman just ten minutes into the second stanza. The substitution turned out to be an inspired one as Ekeson Okorie, in one of his dashing runs into the box was fouled and the referee wasted no time in pointing to the spot, and Kenechukwu Agu expertly converted for the opening goal of the encounter on the 79th minute to send the fans that thronged the stadium into a frenzy. Youssouf Mohamed, however, drew the Comoros side level with just four minutes left on the clock as he nodded home an inviting cross that the Rangers backline found hard to defend just a few seconds after they missed a promising attacking move at the other end of the pitch. Despite the draw, the Nigerian side progressed to the next round of the competition where they are scheduled to engage either St. Louis F.C of Seychelles or Sagrada Esperanca F.C of Angola with the Angolan side enjoying a 1-0 lead from the first leg played in Seychelles last week. Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu in his post-match chat, said, “We are happy to have qualified for the next round of the competition even though when I believe that we did not up our game today against the Comoros champions. This goes a long way to show the mystery of the game of football. Sure, I am worried at our rate of converting chances but I am optimistic of getting over this challenge before the next window for new registration. I believe that the start of the new league season will go a long way in helping us stabilize with regards to cohesive play from my players.”
