Hunter 45 CC

In the 45 CC, Glenn Henderson and the Hunter Design Group have combined their design trademarks-like the backstayless B&R rig and cockpit traveler arch-with a racy-looking house. The result is an easy-to-sail boat that’s capable of extended cruising.

Wraparound portlights brighten an open interior of teak and light-colored Ultraleather upholstery. The nav station features a luxurious swiveling armchair, and there’s plenty of space to add electronics, although access for installation and wiring is extremely tight.

The generous U-shaped galley will please liveaboards. Corian countertops, stainless-steel appliances, and a built-in microwave/coffeemaker evoke custom shoreside kitchens.

CW’s Boat of the Year judges were impressed by the systems and electrical installations but paused at Hunter’s use of a U-bolt-like fitting that connects the bottom of the lower shroud’s tie-rod to the hull. Judges were concerned that it could become deformed under a load and that a nylon locking nut on the pin through the fitting wasn’t tight enough for the nylon locking material to be engaged.

Asked about this observation, Henderson noted that the fitting was designed to withstand loads well in excess of the wire used in the shrouds and that in rigorous tests in which the boats are strapped down and a crane is used to create excessive tension on the rig, no problems have been encountered. He added that the pin and nut of concern to the judges are in sheer and shouldn’t be an issue, and he noted that they’re located in an area where they can easily be inspected.

The piece de resistance on the 45 CC is a luxurious aft cabin that can truly be called a “master suite.” The island berth, with queen innerspring mattress, is flanked by Corian-topped nightstands. Cedar-lined closets, a loveseat, and an en-suite head provide all the comforts of home.

The guest cabin forward has a head, a shower, and a comfortable V-berth.

Cruisers will appreciate the wide decks with such safety features as padeyes for jacklines and hatchboards that provide access to the latch from inside and outside the cabin. The propane locker is on the side deck just inside the lifeline gate, making it easy for crew to load bottles from the dock or dinghy.

The fractional rig is designed for shorthanded sailing. Most of the drive comes from the big mainsail. The small headsail is easily handled, although a winch on the starboard side would assist in furling the genoa. The rig is designed to clear 65-foot bridges, which, along with the 5-foot draft, will make a cruise down the Intracoastal Waterway a breeze.

Most cruising couples don’t want a raceboat; the 45 CC’s moderate sail area-to-displacement ratio of 16.5 keeps it well within their comfort zones. Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough wind to test-sail the 45 CC properly. In 6 knots of breeze, we maxed out at 4.8 knots on a beam reach. The 75-horse Yanmar muscled the boat along at 7.9 knots at cruising rpm, and it backed responsively.

The $286,000 price tag makes the Hunter 45 CC affordable for buyers looking for a stylish, low-maintenance, and good-sized boat for cruising the coasts with all the comforts of a second home. With some careful owner modifications, it’s a home that could also be sailed farther abroad.

Refined from years of customer feedback, the new 45 CC combines signature Hunter features-such as the backstayless B & R rig and the trademark stainless-steel traveler arch over the cockpit-with innovative ideas in style and comfort. In a break from the traditional Hunter look, a European-styled wraparound saloon port/ windshield provides a streamlined profile and allows natural light to brighten the well-appointed interior. True to the purpose of a center-cockpit boat, the aft cabin really is a “master stateroom,” a palatial suite with a centerline innerspring queen berth, a teak vanity desk, Corian-topped nightstands, cedar-lined closets, and a generous en suite head. The tradeoff is a high center cockpit and profile that suggest that maneuvering in a strong wind could be a challenge.

A second head and guest cabin forward allow the owners to entertain others in style and comfort. The galley boasts an expanse of Corian countertop, a large refrigerator/freezer capacity, and also includes a combination microwave/coffeemaker and a glass-fronted dish-draining cabinet.

Above, the 45 CC has clear decks that should be easy to maintain. During our trials in light air, under sail in 6 knots of breeze we had the 45 CC reaching at 4.8 knots, although we might have done better had the bimini not obstructed our views from the helm of the telltales, masthead, and traveler. Under power, the boat made 8.7 knots at full speed and a respectable 7.9 knots cruising at 3,200 rpm.

With room to stretch out below, and with a cockpit that cries out for a gathering, buyers looking for a comfortable home on the water that sails as well should check out this newest offering from the designers at Hunter Marine.

         Walk Through

When first viewing "S/V Quick Enough" one is faced with an orderly and well kept vessel.

Stepping aboard her starboard side,  no heel was noticed at all. The weather decks are clean and orderly with no soft spots noticed. Wide side decks allow easy access to the bow. The full canvas enclosure is in very good condition with clear Isinglass.  Stainless dinghy davits along with a stainless outboard hoisting davit are located on the stern.  Her stainless davits have two solar panels mounted atop along with a wind turbine nearby.  A Magma grill is located here as well.

The cockpit is roomy with cushions, a folding table and all the navigational goodies necessary for a successful passage,  including radar. Visibility is great through the clear Isinglass panels.

Down the companionway hatch one is faced with a luxurious Salon with the galley immediately to starboard and navigation station to port. The galley has everything that a well equipped kitchen ashore would provide,  even a dish drying cabinet.

Moving forward in the Salon is an Ultra Leather "L" shaped settee to port and a bench settee to starboard.  The dining table is offset to port of centerline with a sliding bench seat that tucks up under table to get it out of the way for sailing. There is ample stowage here behind and under the settee's with three overhead hatches and windows which lets in plenty of light providing a bright and cheerful a environment.

The forward Stateroom has an overhead hatch, again,  with plenty of light,  hang up stowage, reading lights and under berth drawers. Two can sleep quite comfortably here.  The forward head is just a step away with a separate shower stall and is a quite nice space to be in.

A port side passage leads back to the Master Stateroom.  In this passage is a large panel for very good access to the main engine.

The Master Stateroom is quite luxurious and very large for a sailing vessel. A navigation station used to be here and on the port side; however,  the owner seeing no need for it,  had custom cabinetry with hang up closets built.  This cabinetry absolutely looks as if it were installed by the builder. A queen size berth resides here with settee's to either side. Drawers and another hang up closet are to starboard.  Both Staterooms and the Salon are eqiupped with Flat screen TV set's.

The ensuite Master head is here which also has a shower stall plenty of stowage and a Jabsco electric toilet as does the forward head.

         Brokers Observation's

"S/V Quick Enough" is very well equipped and needs nothing to get underway. This vessel would make a great choice if you are searching for a vessel that is in a "ready to go" state and well equipped.  When something breaks,  it gets fixed.

Momentum45' Hunter 45CC 2007

This Hunter 45CC named Momentum was designed and engineered for serious cruising. The hull is constructed with solid fiberglass laminate from the waterline down and balsa core in the topsides. Forward sections contain Kevlar reinforcements for strength and fracture resistance in the event of a collision. On deck is synthetic teak that looks great and requires no maintenance. The 45CC has very good visibility from the helm with her low-slung coachroof. There is an integral handrail on the pedestal, a large fold-out table and two coaming lockers.

All sail controls are led aft and the stainless arch supports the Harken mainsheet traveler with leads and stoppers led down each side. The arch also forms an all weather support for the bimini top.

The double-spreader spar by Seldon features Hunter's B&R rig. A large main new in 2022 powers this 45CC and the roller furling jib is a 110-percent. The jib tracks are well inboard, setting up tight sheeting angles with a rigid vang. There is a stainless steel stemhead fitting with double offset anchor rollers, an external chain locker and an electric windlass. The double lifelines include three opening gates. The stern rail seats are a great perch and the two large transom lockers can store lots of gear. The swim platform has a telescoping stainless ladder that makes it easy to climb aboard after a swim and there's a hot shower for a quick rinse.

The 45CC interior plan has an overall sense of spaciousness that is unique. From the foot of the slightly curved companionway steps the galley is to starboard, it’s U-shaped with a molding that doubles as a fiddle and handhold, and is well located for cooking underway. This galley has plenty of counter space, two sinks, and a side-by-side front-loading fridge and freezer along with a portable ice maker. She is equipped with a Breville Smart Oven, a Portable Induction Stove and cabinets behind the stove area. 

The nav station is opposite the galley, an easy chair is the nav seat. Designed for the array of listed electronics, the nav station is set up for paper-free navigation but the nav desk is large enough to plot on and to store once folded charts. 

The saloon includes a large, furniture-quality table to port that accommodates six comfortably and can be converted to a berth and a large settee to starboard. Shelves and cupboards line both outboard areas.

The forward stateroom features a V-berth and easy access storage below. There's a cedar-lined hanging locker and a dressing seat to starboard. There is plenty of headroom and excellent ventilation. The ensuite head includes a stall shower and Corian vanity. 

From the companionway steps to port and aft is the walkthrough to access the master stateroom. The master stateroom has a centerline queen berth with a real mattress and there are convenient seats on each side of the berth, two cedar-lined hanging lockers, and Corian covered nightstands with stainless fiddles. There is lots of storage in drawers and lockers and terrific ventilation with seven opening ports and a large overhead hatch. The private aft head includes a clever bi-fold door for the shower.

Access to the engine is excellent, especially from a side panel in walk through and the vanity tilts out of the way in the aft cabin to allow unobstructed access to the stuffing box.

From the lush rainforests and cascading waterfalls of Grenada and Martinique, to the breathtaking vistas atop Peggie Peak in Bequia, Momentum carried us to some of the Caribbean's most awe-inspiring natural wonders. The vibrant reefs and sea turtles of the Tobago Cays National Park and the seemingly endless beaches, bonfires, and fishing in the Exumas created moments we’ll never forget.

Throughout it all, Momentum proved herself time and time again. She handled a range of sea states with ease, and weathered storms without ever dragging anchor. The boat's upgrades and customizations - detailed in the specs above - made liveaboard life very safe and comfortable.
