Photowalk Community – Beaches and sunset, Mornington Peninsula

blairgowrie yacht club camera

Photowalk: 4 August 2019

For our August photowalk we will be heading south to the Mornington Peninsula, visiting a couple of beaches and hoping for a nice sunset!

We will start at Blairgowrie Marina and beach (see below for exact meeting point) with time to explore the foreshore reserve, beach, pier, boats and beach boxes.

We will then drive onto Cape Schanck Lighthouse Reserve (25-30 min drive). On arrival meet in the carpark then explore the area including the Lighthouse tower and museum (access to this area closes at 6pm, the wider reserve is still accessible). Follow the walking tracks to the boardwalk above the rocks and see Pulpit Rock and spectacular basalt cliffs. Note that sunset will be at 5.34pm, it will get dark quickly after sunset, so ensure you have your torch with you.

Cape Schanck Lighthouse provides spectacular views of the Southern Peninsula coast and Bass Strait. The lighthouse was built from dressed limestone and sandstone and has served shipping since 1859, and is significant because the original mechanisms are still in place and continues to be a working maritime navigation aid for ships approaching Port Phillip.

Casual drinks/dinner will follow at RACV Cape Schanck Resort, 7-10 min drive from the Lighthouse.

After dinner you may wish to return to the Cape Schanck area for Astro photography if there are clear skies after the moon has set. Note that the organised part of the day will be finishing at dinner, Astro is an option for those who may wish to continue on their own.

Weather: as the location is weather dependent, check the Facebook and Meetup events, and MCC website (What’s On calendar photowalk event) for updates on the day if the weather is expected to be particularly rainy or stormy. You may get interesting images if the weather is rainy/stormy.

What to bring:

  • Sturdy tripod for sunset shots as the Southerly winds can be strong
  • Torch or head torch (preferably with a red light or cellophane wrapped on the torch so that you do not disturb other people’s shots).
  • Sturdy walking shoes, some of the boardwalk stairs at Cape Schanck are unsteady and will be slippery if wet.
  • Warm clothing and rain gear, as the area is very exposed to southerly winds and rain
  • Cable/remote trigger release (or use your timer)
  • Spare battery as the cold weather and long exposures can drain batteries quickly
  • Spare memory card
  • Wide angle lens
  • Cape Schanck boardwalk is not disabled friendly
  • Don’t forget a torch as It will be very dark returning to the carpark after sunset

All visitors, friends and members of the Melbourne Camera Club are welcome.

There’s no better place to relax in laid back style…

  The Southern Waters Room

At BYS we know how important it is to have everything just right. Especially when you look forward to a cosy meal with the family or a relaxed get together with friends.

While we don’t take ourselves too seriously, we’re serious about making sure you have a great time, every time you visit. In our signature dining room, the Southern Waters Room, you’ll enjoy a relaxed vibe complemented by a modern Australian menu featuring fresh local produce and seafood. You’ll find the wine list is extensive with the best Mornington Peninsula wineries and breweries represented.

  The Racing Lounge and Deck

Once you ‘feel’ the breathtaking panoramic views of  Port Phillip Bay, you may not want to leave.

If a more casual dining experience is what you enjoy, you can’t go past the Racing Lounge. Opening out onto the sun-drenched upstairs deck, it’s a great destination for pre-dinner drinks while taking in the spectacular sunsets over Point Nepean and out to the Heads.    In winter there is no better place to be than enjoying the couches in front of the warming fire.

The Canteen

Cameron’s Bite Kiosk also know as ‘The Canteen’  on  the ground level is conveniently located in front of the lawn.  It’s a great spot to grab some lunch before heading out sailing and  is open every day from Boxing Day through to Australia Day for take-away coffee, cold drinks, ice creams and snacks.

Our dining and bar facilities are available to members and member’s guest subject to the guest policy. BYS is a fully licensed venue, all alcohol must be purchased from the bar and no BYO alcohol is not permitted.

Do I need to be a member to come for a drink or meal?

Being a members club, our Clubhouse dining and bar facilities are for members and their guests use therefore you must be accompanied by a member, whose obligation it is to sign you in and be with you during your visit to BYS.  These requirements are mandatory under our Liquor Licensing regulations.

Can I bring a guest/s?

Members are welcome to bring guests to the Club, so long as an individual guest doesn’t visit more than 12 times per year, this being 6 times between May-October and 6 times between November-April.  Guests MUST be signed-in at all times to cover our Liquor Licensing regulations, and be in the company of a member at all times.
