Bluegame’s Fashionable Flagship

Yachtbuilding is essentially alchemy. It’s a process that takes base materials and turns them into something special. I was reminded of this while standing on the wide-open aft deck of the Bluegame BG72 and discussing its twin Volvo Penta IPS powertrains with Luca Santella, the Italian Olympic sailor who founded Bluegame almost 20 years ago. Not only do pod installations like these deliver efficient planing performance and precise steering, but they’re also space-efficient. “And of course, space is gold,” Santella says.

How that space is used is what differentiates one builder from the next. Bluegames are crossover designs, but pigeonholing them isn’t easy. The biggest model to date, the BG72, is a capable passagemaker with real liveaboard potential, yet equally, it would thrive as a fun-in-the-sun dayboat or an anywhere weekender. Lou Codega engineered the yacht’s hull platform, while the tough-guy exterior and the Italian-chic interior come from Zuccon International Project.

Everything this team achieved in terms of layout either revolves around or is made possible by that aft-deck space. It can be left bare or filled with furniture, tenders or toys—and it allows for a farther-forward placement (virtually amidships) of what would be the cockpit on other yachts. The main deck has full-standing headroom, not only forward but also beneath the cockpit. And the cockpit itself is an alfresco-style salon with sun pads, seating beneath a solid Bimini top, a wet bar and ladder access to more sunbathing space on the wheelhouse roof.

The whole main deck is a single-level walkaround space. Side decks connect the cockpit to more open-air lounging space on the foredeck. The fully enclosed wheelhouse is compact; underway, it allows for superb visibility, not only through a forward-raked windshield but also aft via reverse-raked glass as well as side windows. Three multifunction displays provide vessel-control and monitoring information to the skipper at the centerline, two-seat helm (a bench sofa is to starboard). There’s also a sunroof option above the bridge console for additional connection to the elements.

A staircase to port of the helm descends belowdecks, where two layouts are available, each with three en suite staterooms. In one layout, there’s a full-beam lounge and galley down with natural light and views from hullside windows, all near the terrace-on-the-sea aft deck. In this layout, a pair of twin-berth staterooms are amidships, with the portside en suite also serving as the day head. A full-beam master stateroom has an aft-facing king berth.

In the other layout, the lounge space aft becomes the master stateroom. The starboard guest stateroom serves as a smaller lounge, and the forward space becomes a VIP.

Crew berths and a head-shower combo are accessed via a discreet hatch beneath a foredeck sun pad. However, the Bluegame BG72 is intended to be an owner-operated yacht, with perhaps just one crewmember.

There’s hatch-within-a-hatch access to the engine room, a setup that should work well, provided there’s no pouring rain or following sea. There are two engine options for the BG72: twin 900 hp or 1,000 hp Volvo Penta D13 diesels with IPS1200 or IPS1350 pod drives. Depending on the load state, these motors should deliver top speeds around 28 to 30 knots. Expect fast-cruise ranges to be above 370 nautical miles. At 10 knots, the BG72 can run for at least 1,000 nm before needing to refuel.

Bluegame says all 10 hulls sold to date will have the more powerful diesels, plus Seakeeper gyrostabilization. Hulls No. 4 and 5 are expected to be on the U.S. Eastern Seaboard soon.

For yacht owners seeking a vessel with 30-knot performance, an eye-catching profile, immense interior and exterior volume, and the ability to serve as a solid family cruiser or an at-sea entertainment platform, the Bluegame BG72 is worth a closer look.

Made in Italy

While the smallest Bluegame model, the BG42, is built in Bergamo, Italy, all the others are built by the brand’s Sanlorenzo parent company in Ameglia, close to La Spezia on the country’s northwest coast. The first BG72 was shown as a prototype at the 2021 Cannes Yachting Festival. We got on board Hull No. 3 some 13 months later.

A Cat’s Coming

For the moment, the BG72 is Bluegame’s largest model. However, the first BGM75 powercat is expected to launch by late spring or early summer, with a possible debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival in autumn 2023. This model will measure 74 feet, 4 inches length overall with a beam of 26 feet, 7 inches. Bluegame is promising a more seakindly motion than conventional catamarans, a less boxy profile and a usable volume similar to that of a 90-foot monohull.

Sanlorenzo’s sub-brand is making waves with its radical designs. Is this innovative Bluegame BG72 a blueprint for the modern passagemaker? MBY deputy editor Jack Haines reports...

Nothing quite prepares you for the sensation of stepping aboard the Bluegame BG72. To stand on the bathing platform and be met by such a vast expanse of flat, teak-laid deck on a boat that is under 75ft in length just feels downright indulgent.

It’s a boat that challenges you to think differently about how craft of this size can be configured and to discard any notion of conformity.

Padding across the enormous transformer bathing platform, it’s striking how such a feeling of luxury is created by simply having an abundance of clear deck space.

Though it isn’t loaded with toys and gizmos, because of its acreage and sheer openness it feels luxurious and, like the rest of the boat, can be made into exactly what you want it to be.

Customisation is the name of the game with a Bluegame and there aren’t many shipyards – even at this size – that will allow a customer to sit down with a designer and a blank piece of paper to create a boat that is tailored to their exact needs.

The aft deck is the ultimate blank space, free to be loaded with as much or as little furniture as possible. You can fix furniture here if you want but that sort of defeats the object given you have the raised aft cockpit on the deck above with a great mix of lounging and seating options.

If water toys are your thing then there isn’t a boat in the sector better equipped to serve as a base. Tenders, jet-skis, canoes and paddle boards can all be loaded onto the aft deck with an optional crane to lower them into the water, creating a floating toy chest of epic proportions.

Alternatively, the transformer bathing platform has a lift capacity of 500kg so if you only want to carry a tender it can be launched and recovered from here leaving that aft deck free for sun loungers and bean bags.

The transformer platform is a stunning bit of kit that brings a huge amount of functionality to the aft end of the boat.

Leave it level and it extends the usable deck space by a good 10ft but it also lowers into the water, creating a gently declining access point to the water, where the submerged platform becomes a brilliant spot to don flippers, prepare for watersports or simply wallow in the shallow end.

In port, the platform can be raised up to create almost a full-width passerelle, a far more inviting prospect than the usual narrow, wobbly affair.

Bluegame BG72 Review: Outside the Box

Bluegame BG72 is a daring yacht designed for owners who love avant-garde design and plenty of space

Following the traditional view on yachts and boats, many owners have an idea of a strict separation of units into cruise yachts and day boats, which are mostly used as tenders. While the first category boasts spacious cabins and dining areas, the second is beloved for open spaces. Yet in recent years, new trends have begun to merge these two seemingly completely separate concepts into a unique yacht design.

New crossover from Bluegame Yachts

The most important name in this new crossover segment is Italian manufacturer Bluegame, part of the Sanlorenzo group since 2018. Starting as a manufacturer of small day cruisers with open cockpit, with the launch of the BX70 Bluegame introduced in 2019 a model with plenty of open space, a flybridge salon, and exterior design very much reminiscent of an explorer yacht crossed with a professional workboat.

In 2021, Bluegame took the BX70 design to the next level with the BG72. The new model takes all the radical design components of her predecessor and elevates them to a new level, adding an open salon on the upper deck. Like all Bluegame models, the BG72 was designed by naval architect Luca Santella, and we had the opportunity to take her out to sea for trials at the Cannes show last year.

The first feature that caught our eye is the truly huge aft platform which is a natural extension of the spacious aft space. This platform extends almost two meters from the end of the hull, and the platform itself, with the help of strong hydraulics, can be further moved away from the stern by about a meter, and moved one meter up or down in relation to its starting position. The platform is connected to the deck and can serve as a walkway or a staircase leading down to the sea.

From the platform we stepped aboard, finding ourselves on the deck – the stern is basically another spacious teak platform protected on the sides by the high sides of the hull. The purpose of this space, which looks more like the stern of a work boat than a yacht, becomes clear when you realize how much space it offers to the owner, allowing them to use it however they want; filling it with deck chairs or sea toys. Raising the floor at the stern opens up the engine compartment and allows easier access to the engines, generator and air conditioners.

Finally, the superstructure of the ship begins with the main entrance to the interior via a wide sliding door that serve as windows of the salon. On both sides there are stairs that lead to the upper deck, to another salon. Like the rest of the interior, the main deck salon is somewhat unusually decorated, with plenty of dark wenge wood and gray fabrics, perhaps to contrast all those open spaces.

The salon and cabins are accessed via a small staircase below the stern, and the salon is furnished by a black glass dining table, a sofa to the port, a bar that separates the galley from the salon, and a comfortable L-shaped sectional served by a coffee table for coffee starboard.

Below deck there are two guest cabins, each with two single beds, each with it’s own bathroom, and the owner’s cabin is in the bow with a headboard oriented towards the very bow. Another layout is available, with the master cabin astern, and the salon and the galley mid-hull, with one guest cabin and VIP cabin in the bow. Anther staircase took us to the command post, the only fully closed space on the main deck.

The post enjoys excellent visibility and is served by a very clean control panel dominated by three multifunctional touchscreens, the steering wheel and throttle levers and a Volvo IPS joystick. This space allows for excellent visibility and offers protection from the elements. In the bow area of the command post, there is a bench facing the bow.

Outside on the main deck, in front of the command post, there is a large sunbed. Behind the command post on the main deck lies another salon, protected by a roll bar and furnished with a folding that can connect two sofas located opposite each other, a barbecue, sink and refrigerator combo, and with a sunbathing area astern.

Bluegame BG72 range and speed

Powered by two Volvo Penta IPS 1350 D13 engines, the Bluegame BG72 is a true cruiser that sails most efficiently at around 14 knots, with both engines consuming 111 liters per hour, while optimal cruising speed is 25 knots, with consumption around 316 liters.

Maximum speed is 30 knots. BG72 is excellent at breaking waves, especially because of the high bow, while in turns, even at high speeds, it tilts by a maximum of about ten degrees. Rolling is reduced by a gyroscopic stabilizer (standard equipment), which also helps in reducing tilting and jumping. Bluegame BG72 left an impression of a yacht whose daring design reflects well her daring capabilities – and will probably attract equally daring owners.

Bluegame debuts BG72 flagship at Cannes Yachting Festival

Bluegame's 21.7 metre flagship BG72 has made its grand debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival.

The flagship model was first announced at the Genoa Boat Show in 2020 and is described by Bluegame as "the missing link" between its open and flybridge offerings.

Its exterior was designed in-house by Luca Santella, while naval architecture comes from Lou Codega . The interiors and exterior living spaces are the work of long-time collaborator Zuccon International Project . The yacht spans three levels and features a multi-functional beach club area that serves as both a sunbathing spot and storage for tenders. A twin set of stairs lead up to a sun deck, also accessible via the flybridge.

"The new Bluegame BG72 is the perfect expression of its cross-over soul," the yard said. "With the BG72, Bluegame goes even further by combining the concepts of the BG and BGX ranges; the result is a successful fusion of open and flybridge."

Guests enter the main saloon from the aft deck via angular sliding glass doors. “The open saloon that links with a beach area ensures that life flows within the interiors and exteriors,” the yard said. However, the interiors can be tailored to suit each owner: the saloon with direct access from the beach club can be replaced by the owner's cabin, an option only previously seen on the larger BGX models.

The owner of the first hull chose the version with the saloon overlooking the beach area with Canaletto walnut wood and blue tones running throughout the yacht.

The BG72 is the largest in the 'BG' series of motor yachts which also comprises the BG42 and BG62 models. It also takes the spot of Bluegame's former flagship, the BGX70 .

Bluegame BG72 builds on strong platform

For its newest model, Italy’s Bluegame has combined the huge aft platform and lower-deck saloon of its ground-breaking BGX series with the open style of its BG range. Welcome aboard the BG72, which offers the best of both worlds from a brand that’s growing fast in Asia.

For the BG72’s world premiere at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival, Bluegame’s newest model was nestled with a BG42, BGX60 and BGX70 among an imposing selection of Sanlorenzo yachts ranging from the SX76 to as big as the SD126, a 38m superyacht with a volume of 314GT.

Although towered over by flybridge and trideck models from their sister brand, Bluegame boats sat proudly in the heart of the Jetée among the show’s leading exhibitors, with Azimut and Ferretti Group models along to the left, Princess and Sunseeker to the right.

Having then shown at the Genoa International Boat Show, the BG72 even leveraged off Sanlorenzo’s muscle to appear at the Monaco Yacht Show, where she was the smallest boat on display in the world’s premier superyacht show.

In the same way Bluegame’s recent rebirth has been propelled by its mother company, so the brand is fast emerging in Asia under Simpson Marine, which has been Sanlorenzo’s exclusive partner in Asia since 2015.

The huge platform is even bigger than on the BGX70

After also taking on Bluegame last year, the region’s biggest dealer brought the high-profile BGX70 to Hong Kong to kick-start the brand’s presence, which has proved its worth. The company now has similarly high hopes for the BG72, which has many of the BGX70’s attributes but with an open-style main deck.

Nick Stratton, Sales Manager for both Sanlorenzo Asia and Bluegame Asia, says: “The BG72 shares aspects with the BGX70 like the iconic profile, plus the huge platform and the aft lower-deck saloon, which aren’t seen on any other brands. The beam and the social spaces, especially on the magnificent stern platform, provide a new way of life at sea.

“However, like all models in the BG range, the BG72 has a spacious, bright and airy main deck. It’s a great boat, with enhanced circulation between the lower and main deck, and even more light in the lower saloon. Owners love the modern styling, and we expect it to be equally popular as the BGX70.”

BLUEGAME’S GROWTH IN ASIA

It’s a bold statement considering Simpson Marine has announced sales of three BGX70s, a unit of the BGX60 that debuted in late 2020 plus one and two hulls respectively of the open-style BG62 and BG42 that kick-started Bluegame’s rebirth three years ago.

Sanlorenzo had previously owned the brand founded by Luca Santella until the financial crisis of 2008 led to it being put on the shelf in 2012. The two-time Olympic sailor later became Design Development Manager at Sanlorenzo and worked with Zuccon International Project on the SX range.

Like the rest of the BG series, the BG72 has an open design

After Santella revealed designs showing how Bluegame could help ‘extend’ the SX concept to models smaller than the SX76, Sanlorenzo Executive Chairman Massimo Perotti moved to revive the brand.

“When Sanlorenzo re-introduced Bluegame as part of its portfolio, it marked a rebirth of an attractive niche brand for a specific kind of customer, but now the brand is growing very quickly worldwide and that also includes Asia,” Stratton said. “Bluegame takes advantage of Sanlorenzo’s quality and expertise in build, but addresses owners looking for smaller sizes.

Knowing Sanlorenzo’s reputation, customers feel confident about Bluegame, so growth is significantly quicker than introducing a totally new brand to the market.

“It’s a brand that innovates, is different but also bespoke. The yachts look trendy and streamlined, have a very pleasant circulation and feel of spaciousness.”

While the BG42 and BG62 were updates of former Bluegame models, it was the BGX70 that made the brand a true influencer in the motor yacht world. Sanlorenzo’s SX88 and SX76 featured extralong swim platforms just a few steps from a clear-backed cockpit, providing more living space close to water level. However, the two-deck BGX70 took the concept to a new level.

Designed by Santella with Zuccon and with a hull by Lou Codega, it made the platform even longer and included an aft saloon on the lower deck, which also housed the guest cabins. The more conventional main deck features an aft cockpit, enclosed saloon, galley and helm, as well as an open foredeck.

REARRANGED LOWER DECK

The BG72 shares the same 18ft-wide Codega hull, housing the Volvo Penta IPS drives under the aft deck, but it’s a lot more different to the BGX70 than initial glances suggest. Among changes are an almost completely reconfigured lower deck with an aft master suite option, a completely new main deck befitting BG’s open style, while even the bow area has been redesigned.

In fact, even the huge platform has been lengthened aft, with the BG72 more than 3ft longer overall than the BGX70. Furthermore, instead of only starboard stairs to the main deck, there are also stairs to port.

The saloon features a lounge to starboard and a dining area to port

The hull shown at Cannes, Genoa and Monaco features the standard aft-saloon option, while the owner chose distinctive materials and colours, including Canaletto walnut wood plus leather and fabrics in light and blue tones.

Compared to the BGX70, the entrance is now on the port side, while the room itself has been extended and rearranged. In the absence of enclosed dining on the main deck, a dining area has been included on the port side, where it sits alongside the semi-enclosed, L-shaped galley.

The lounge is to starboard and has an improved layout, with an L-shaped sofa allowing views aft of the platform and water. There’s also room for chairs by the sliding glass doors, which provide more natural light than on its predecessor.

The central corridor leads to a hallway accessing the three en-suite guest cabins, starting with twins port and starboard. Forward are the stairs and the owner’s suite, which has an aft-facing bed against a mirrored bulkhead and an elegant bathroom to starboard.

The BG72’s alternative lower-deck layout replaces the saloon with the master suite, which would offer the owners stunning views and the opportunity to wake up looking over the water to the horizon. In this option, the saloon, galley and a twin cabin are positioned midships, with the VIP suite in the bow.

BREEZY MAIN DECK

Accessible from either the exterior aft stairs or internal stairs up to the helm, the main deck has an open design that starts aft with a triple sunpad that’s not covered by the hardtop but can be by an attached bimini.

The sunpad looks forward to a sofa to port and an L-shaped sofa and expandable table to starboard, all offering a pleasant covered social area. There’s also the option of some informal alfresco dining as there’s a wet bar just forward of the sofas.

The impressive pilot house has a reverse-angle windscreen and is enclosed on three sides, while the aft doors can shut when the room needs to be fully enclosed, whether for privacy or bad weather.

The double helm seat sits under a slatted sunroof and faces a nice display with three large Garmin screens, central throttle, joystick control and smart docking as part of the IPS system, which is renowned for fuel efficiency. Like the BGX70, the BG72 reaches 28 knots with twin 900hp IPS 1200s and 30 knots with the 1,000hp IPS1350s.

There’s easy circulation throughout the main deck and high bulwarks ensure safe passage to the foredeck, which features flexible furniture comprising a sofa and a large sunpad. As with the aft sunpad, this area can also be covered in a bimini, while the sunpad itself disguises the entrance to the twin-bunk crew cabin.

However, there’s one more sunbathing area, up on the roof of the hardtop. Accessed by a steep stairway forward of the port sofa, the simple sun deck features four adjoining sunpads across the hardtop, just aft of the sunroof.
