Yamaha 25-2

Yamaha 25-2 is a 24 ′ 9 ″ / 7.6 m monohull sailboat designed by Yamaha/Ichiro Yokoyama and built by Yamaha starting in 1976.

Drawing of Yamaha 25-2

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

I was wondering if anyone could give me some idea of whether a Yamaha 25 is a seaworthy enough boat for an Atlantic crossing? I don't hear much about them, probably because the are not sold in the US. I have heard a rumor or two of some crossing the Pacific to Hawaii? Small boat but seawothy? Thanks!

Here's an owner review...doesn't seem like the best boat for extended cruising to me given the intended use and short tankage. Owner review of the Yamaha 25mkII by Lyn McClure

The new issue of Good Old Boat has a review of the Yamaha 25. It doesn't mention an Atlantic crossing, but it gets a good review as a daysailer. I'm sure under the right conditions, it could make a crossing, heck, people have done it rowboats, but WHY would you want to?

It is said that an old lady in a bath tub can make it from the left coast to Hawaii with no nav gear or even a compass. But the "and back" bit is pretty impressive! That is no trip for the faint of heart.

Hello Everyone, I am a new member to S.O. I am looking for my first sailboat and the Yamaha really seems like a nice boat. I am looking around the 25 foot range so I can trailer it. Does anyone have any suggestions/advice. I am in Ukiah, Ca. (2 hrs N of San Francisco) Thankyou, Greg

Jalepeno

The Yamaha 25 is a great sailboat. I almost bought one a couple of years ago. It is NOT a good choice for trailering. http://sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_ID=686

25 in SD There's a 25 on the San Diego Craigslist. Sounds to be in reasonable condition.

Correction: It's on eBay, and the boat's in SD. Sorry.

Dancing Queen, that is a beautiful boat and a good looking trailer set up. Do you own the trailer or rent it to move the boat? I just got a 78 Yamaha 25 mkII and look forward to many years of great sailing with her.

Dancing Queen said: Thank's themess . That is my own trailer and I keep my boat on trailer when sailing season is over. My boat was build in 1986 and I bought her in Japan last winter. In summer 2010 I sailed about 500 n.m. on her. I have not any great experience with other 25-ft boat and I can't compare, but I am personally think my Yamaha is very, very good boat. Click to expand

2024 Yamaha 252SD

  • By Boating Tech Team
  • December 8, 2023

Yamaha’s 252SD sports classic bowrider appeal, an abundance of features and clever innovation, but the 2024 headlines are topped by the introduction of a new engine duo. Yamaha’s naturally aspirated 1.9-liter High Output powerplant offers the largest displacement yet seen in the jet-drive market. Combined, the pair produces 400 hp, pushes the 252SD to 30 mph in 7 seconds, and tops out near 48 mph. That the engines provide this power without the use of superchargers is notable, which will pay off on the showroom floor and at the gas pump. And the low-speed handling might steal the show. Yamaha’s Drive system adds paddle-style shifters on each side of the steering wheel to offer an alternative for shifting in and out of forward, neutral and reverse. It’s great in tight confines, keeping a driver’s hands on the wheel and attention on the water. Drive X, an exclusive addition to the 252SD, integrates directional control buttons into the steering-wheel hub. Similar to a joystick, Drive X allows drivers to crab the boat sideways, spin it within its own length, or even hold the boat against a dock when boarding passengers or gear.

Maximizing cockpit space is a Yamaha trademark. The 252SD boasts a 12-passenger capacity and offers several unique twists on the standard bowrider formula. The bow cockpit offers twin benches but adds filler cushions, and you can fashion a sun pad or third forward-facing seat ahead of the cockpit walk-through. Front cushions allow passengers to stretch out; when removed, sit facing forward with feet on the floor. Aft, convertible stern seatbacks slide forward or aft to enhance comfort or shift focus to the swim platform when coving.

Yamaha 252SD running

Clever touches include storage behind the angled aft seatbacks, a flip-up galley table, storage, and a designated cooler spot just abaft the helm seat. The water-focused transom area also adds padded backrests for those sitting atop the swim platform, as well as removable swim-up seats that mount below the water’s surface. They make the swim platform a waterside bar top and provide access to remote sound-system controls.

Dealer Engine Prep is required to validate the warranty and ensure a working engine. Outboards picked up in-store may be stand-alone and no longer in the box or crate.

Pre-Delivery Inspection

Pre-delivery Inspection is required to validate the warranty and includes the necessary services & products used on each new vessel to ensure quality performance prior to delivery.

For rigged vessels: Boat Specialists will install a deep cycle marine battery, rig all steering components, and complete an electrical and systems check. A full system check includes filling the motor with oil, fluids, and fuel, then a test run performed in a tank for quality assurance.

Once everything is tuned and prepared, a sea trial is performed to achieve the ideal RPM-to-top-speed ratio, ensuring the boat gets on plane properly and all systems operate on water. Afterward, full detail is performed on the exterior, deck, and hull to be turn-key ready for the customer.
