SAMSA SKIPPER TRAINING
We provide Skippers Training Courses such as the SAMSA Skippers license is required for powered vessels under 9 meters with an engine over 15hp. We provide training as qualified skippers to the requirements set out by SAMSA. The Exam includes a written paper Oral questions & practical test. As well as being SAMSA skippers your tutor will also be trained as a powerboat instructor in the RYA scheme. We use independent examiners which are arranged for you. RYA POWERBOAT LEVEL 2 COURSE
This course is the perfect introduction to Powerboating. An informative 2-day course that covers all you need to obtain the ICC under 10m license for international boating. This license is also one of the key qualifications when entering the Superyacht Industry as crew, both Deckhands & Steward/ess will benefit from this course, giving them the ability to drive the small tenders when needed whilst working on the Superyachts, this will give you an edge when looking for employment.

SHORE BASED COURSES
These certificates are used all over the world by Superyacht Deck Crew, Yachtmasters, Stewardesses, Charters, safety and rescue services. The certificate issued on RYA center yachts is only for the yacht your on. It cannot be transferred as you move yachts. The certificate issued from RYA centers in Cape Town are valid for life within international guidelines on any yacht.
RYA PWC Instructors certificate
The rules and regulations around Europe require anyone using a PWC (Jet Ski) to hold a certificate of competency. The local Police are fining individuals and yachts on the spot fines of 500 euros or more. The regulations are being tightened up all over the world.
SRC VHF RADIO
SRC VHF Radio course now available for South Africa and International use. If you use a marine radio you should hold the correct certificate. We offer the SRC certificate as a one-stop process. The course includes your manual and exam fees. We also provide you with pre course learning so the course lasts just one day
If you have a marine VHF radio with DSC capability on your vessel when its time for the survey you will need to show a ‘Ships radio license’ and the ‘SRC operators certificate’ contact us for any information. We can set up the LRC and GMDSS courses as well.

INTRODUCTION TO SAILING COMPETENT CREW DECKHAND DAY SKIPPER SA COASTAL SKIPPERS |
This is for complete novices who have never been on a sailing vessel and want to see if they like sailing. It also caters for those who are visiting Cape Town and want to use it as a Sailing Charter to spend a half day or full day on the water. Once you have done an Introduction to sailing course you should be all fired up and really enthused to go onto the next level, i.e. The Competent Crew/Deckhand Course.
This is the entry level course you need to do if you want to take sailing more seriously. Generally the course is conducted over 5 days or more, not necessarily consecutive days but it can also be done over weekends, or even once a week over a period of time. The syllabus consists of many topics i.e. nautical terms, knots & rope work, preparing the sails for sea, hoisting, reefing, changing & stowing sails, points of sailing, tacking & gybing, steering the yacht, rules of the road, anchoring, man overboard, personal safety & comfort, mooring and leaving a berth, mayday & a host of other topics. The course will enable you to join any yacht and be competent to follow the skipper's instructions etc. There is both a theory and practical component and is a prerequisite to going onto the next level, namely becoming a Day Skipper.
This is a beginner's skippers course, which does for skippers what the Competent Crew Course does for crews. We focus on the two most difficult aspects of skippering a yacht for the beginner: pilotage and boat handling. The course gives a solid grounding in Navigation and Yacht handling. People who have never skippered a yacht, however experienced they might be as crew should do this course as well as those who own or intend to own their own yacht. The Day Skipper licence is a requirement if you wish to charter a boat in the Med or elsewhere in the world. NB. You cannot sail a yacht in SA waters unless you have a Day Skippers licence approved by SA Sailing. There is an immense difference between being a mate on a yacht and being the person in charge and the course introduces the problems and responsibilities of being in charge of a yacht and how to cope with the common difficulties. Syllabus: Successful candidates will pass the internationally accepted SA Sailing Practical and Theory Exams. Day Skippers must also hold a valid Radio licence. This course covers all the practical and theoretical knowledge for the Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore examinations. The syllabus for both these courses is similar. Minimum Requirement: a Day Skipper Certificate or having owned and sailed a yacht for a number of years, plus a minimum of 800 miles logged in open sea. Syllabus: Students also need to have a valid First Aid certificate as well as a Radio Licence.

RYA Day Skipper
This course is important in that it is the first step and introduction to the amazing world of practical navigation, skippering and seamanship.
Pre-Course Requirements:
The RYA Day Skipper Practical course assumes knowledge of the RYA Day Skipper theory and practical experience to at least the level of an RYA Competent Crew with 100 nautical miles logged.
During this course, you will learn to Skipper the boat and Manage crew. You will have the chance to put your navigational and skippering ability into practice. On board, the aim is to expose you to as many different situations as possible. This course is run either in Cape Town or in Langebaan / Saldanha Bay lagoon (tidal waters).
We take a maximum of five students per course.
Duration: 5 days on board sail training
Venue: Students are required to meet at Royal Cape Yacht Club, Cape Town.
Course Fees Include:
- Living on board on of our yachts during this practical week (meals and accommodation included)
- The use of all our navigational equipment
- RYA course completion certificate which is registered with the RYA
Course Fees Exclude:
- Accommodation, meals and transport required for any other time in Cape Town.

Please note:
Students are required to bring the following on their first day with Yachtmaster Ocean Sailing School:
- R1,500.00 CASH deposit /security for any loss or damage to yachts, equipment etc. At the end of your training, if no loss or damage has been noted, the deposit will be returned to you in cash.
- R100 CASH deposit for a temporary access card to Royal Cape Yacht Club. Students are requested to make their way directly to the reception on their first day and pay the deposit and receive the card. At the end of your training, please return the card to Reception where the deposit will be returned to you.
- Colour passport photographs for the following certificates: SRC Radio, RYA Day Skipper Practical, RYA Coastal Skipper Practical, Prep & Exam (x2), Commercial Endorsement Application, RYA Powerboat level 2.
- A sleeping bag for practical courses, alternatively this can be ordered and purchased from Yachtmaster and will be ready for you on your arrival. Costs R500.
- Foul weather clothing, for practical on-board courses, alternatively this can be ordered and purchased from Yachtmaster and will be ready for you on your arrival. (10% discount offered only to our booked students).

Your commercially endorsed RYA Yachtmaster Offshore license is required by yacht crew agents and sailing charter companies with which we are associated via our partners. Yacht Deckhand’s holding an Offshore (CoC) are considered exceptionally strong candidates and valued assets on any yacht up to MCA OOW Master (yachts less than 3000gt).

We are pleased to offer the courses needed to take you from novice to experienced crew in a timeline that suits your needs and budget. All the qualifications in the world will not help if you are not hard working, professional, clean, smart, with impeccable manners and have a full understanding of the industry.
Peter Daly is the Principle of Sail and Power SA. He has been boating for over 30 years, the last 10 in South Africa. As well as being a Yachtmaster Instructor he is also the only Powerboat and PWC Trainer in Africa. This means most of the instructors working in South Africa has been trained or Moderated by Pete.
It is vital to understand the role and responsibilities of a super yacht entry level crew member when investing in training qualifications.
The responsibilities of newbie Deckhands are limited, due to the lack of yachting experience, they will have when starting out in the industry. These vessels are worth millions of Dollars and as a result, the new Deckhand’s role onboard is limited to cleaning, polishing, maintenance and duties such as tender driving, anchoring, line handling – until he has proven himself as trustworthy, responsible and showing initiative. The same can said for the Stewardess joining a vessel for the first time. Having silver service employment in 4 or 5-star hotels will help a lot. Bar work at the local Pub may not.
Diversity in qualification not only opens additional avenues for employment but will set you apart from the other crew and get your CV noticed within a pile of newbie job applications.
We have looked at the market and come up with a range of courses that cover the needs of the newbie on a gap year or two, to the career-minded individual looking, for a long-term future in the Superyacht Industry.
